Since this Readme is in a scrolling text box you'll be hard pressed to find
any page numbers, bold-letter headings or fancy formatting. We've split
the information for Windows 95 users and MS-DOS users with the
Windows 95 specific topics FIRST, followed by DOS-specific topics. Each
topic is in ALL CAP letters and centered. Under each topic you might find
"Sub-Topics," denoted by quotation marks.

                             WINDOWS 95
                     SOUND PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"When I Start Afterlife, I Do Not Hear Any Sound Or Music"
All of the sound and music in Afterlife is digital sound. If
Windows 95 is correctly configured to play WAV files, then you
should hear sound in the game. If you start the game and hear
no sound, be sure to check the following:
         1. Make sure your speakers are plugged in and the volume is
            turned up.
         2. Make sure that your sound card is working correctly in
Windows 95. You can check this by playing a WAV file
using Microsoft's Media Player. If you do not hear
sound, check your sound card documentation or contact
the manufacturer for assistance in setting up your
            sound card.

"When I Play Afterlife, I Hear Sound and Music But the Quality Is Poor"
Please make sure that your card is fully Windows 95 compatible and
that you have the latest Windows 95 32-bit drivers for your sound
card. You will most likely experience difficulties with sound if you
are	using 16-bit Windows 3.1 drivers or if your card is only
supported in Windows 95 through Sound Blaster emulation. Check with
the manufacturer's BBS or Internet Web site for up-to-date drivers.
If Windows 95 drivers are not available for your sound card, you may
wish to run the DOS version instead.

"Sound and Music Cut Off Completely"
There is a remote possibility, that the sound and music may disappear
entirely. If this should occur, select the "Audio Settings" window
from the game's Global Menu and toggle the Master Volume switch off
and on. If this fails, save your game and then select Quit. Restart
Afterlife and load your saved game. This should reactivate your sound
	and music.

                             WINDOWS 95
                    DISPLAY PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"Sometimes When I Start Afterlife, All Of the Graphics Appear to be Washed
                         Out Or Blacked Out"
You may find your graphics to be washed or blacked out if you to click
on the desktop after choosing "Play Afterlife" from the Start Menu,
before the LucasArts logo appears. If you do this, Afterlife will be
displayed using your desktop's palette. To correct this situation,
press Alt-Esc, then click the Afterlife button on the Taskbar to
return to Afterlife. The colors should revert back to normal.

"DIAMOND VIPER PCI & DIAMOND EDGE Video Cards"
Users of these video cards may notice minor graphic corruption such
	as incorrect cursor colors.

                             WINDOWS 95
                PERFORMANCE/SPEED PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"Make Sure Your Computer Meets Game Requirements"
Make sure your computer meets the minimum specifications as detailed
under the "Configuration Details" section of this Readme.

For optimum game performance, we recommend the following:
- Pentium CPU
- quad-speed CD-ROM drive (MPC Level 2-compliant)
- 16 megabytes of RAM
- PCI or local bus Windows-accelerated graphics card

"How To Achieve Best PERFORMANCE With Afterlife"
	1. For slower systems, especially with double speed CD-ROM drives,
	   choose 'Medium' or 'Large' installation.
	2. To avoid slow gameplay TURN OFF ALL unnecessary applications like
wallpaper, shell programs, Windows 95 navigation software,
anti-virus software, screen savers and especially those
applications that use sound. Running other applications may
result in performance problems such as palette shifts.
	3. If you experience extremely long load times, increase the CD-ROM
supplemental cache size. From the Control Panel menu,
double-click the System icon, then select Performance, then
File System, then CD-ROM. Also make sure that "optimize access
pattern" is set for your CD-ROM drive's speed. This will use more
memory for CD caching, but speed up CD load times.
	4. If the opening logo sequence appears choppy or your screen redraws
slowly while you are creating your Afterlife, you should make
sure your desk top size is set to 640 x 480. Also, Afterlife is
designed to make use of 256 colors. If your Windows 95 desktop
is set to more than 256 colors, performance will be adversely
	   affected.
    5. Obtain the latest 32-bit display drivers for your Graphics card.
Contact your manufacturer's BBS or Internet Web site.

                             WINDOWS 95
                        SOUND CARD CONFLICTS
"MEDIA VISION PRO, MEDIA VISION JAZZ 16 and GRAVIS PLUG'n'PLAY"
Users operating with these sound cards may experience intermittent
popping while Windows 95 is accessing the hard disk for virtual
memory. This is most common on machines with 8 megabytes of RAM.
This problem may be resolved by increasing your system's RAM or
making a boot disk and playing Afterlife in DOS.

"PRO AUDIO SPECTRUM"
Users with this sound card may experience delays in some sound
	effects.

                             WINDOWS 95
                           ERROR MESSAGES
"CD-ROM Error Message"
If you get a blue screen CD-ROM error message, try taking the CD
out of the drive, cleaning it and looking for any scratches on the
    disk.

"Magic Low Memory Warning"
Some computers, including certain Packard Bell models, load either
Smartdrv.exe or Mscdex.exe in their configuration files. These files
are not necessary to Win95 and may result in the above warning, as
well as reduced performance. Advanced users may wish to REM them out
of their configuration files. Generally, however, this problem can
be solved by making a boot disk and playing in DOS.

                             WINDOWS 95
                        BAD THINGS NOT TO Do
	1. Do NOT use QuickRes to switch resolution while Afterlife is
running. (For example, if you use QuickRes to switch from
640x480 to 1024x768, while Afterlife is running, you window
stays at 640x480, rather than taking up the whole screen.
The only way to make Afterlife full screen, at this point, is
to Quit the game and Restart. Conversely, if you were to switch
from a higher resolution like 1024x768 to 800x600 or smaller, you
will loose the scroll bars and possibly cursor keys'
	   functionality.)

	2. Do NOT make a boot disk after booting from a boot disk.

	3. Do NOT play Afterlife in a DOS box. This may result in
performance problems and possible game crashes on most computers.

                             WINDOWS 95
                       UNINSTALLING AFTERLIFE
To uninstall Afterlife go to the Control Panel (in the Start Menu under
Settings), double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select
the "LucasArts Afterlife" file and click on the Add/Remove button.

PROBLEMS GETTING THE GAME TO RUN
If you have problems running Afterlife, we suggest you try making a
Boot Disk. (Since bootmaker is a DOS based program, we only
recommend that Windows 95 users make a boot disk if they CANNOT
play in Windows 95.) Making a boot disk will configure most
machines for optimum performance with the DOS version of Afterlife.

"Making a Boot Disk - DOS Users"
To make a boot disk, change to your CD-ROM drive (drive D on most
computers) and type INSTALL. From there, click on "Make a Boot
Disk" and follow directions. If you can not run the install
program, follow these instructions for an alternate way to
	     make a boot disk.
	1. Change to the prompt designated to your CD-ROM drive (usually D).
Type D: and press the Enter key (for example, D:<Enter>).
	2. Type BOOTMKR and press the Enter key. This will start the game's
Boot Disk Maker Utility. Follow the utility's instructions to
	     make a boot disk.
	3. Once the boot disk is made, reboot your system from the boot disk.
Do this by rebooting or restarting your system with the boot
	     disk in the A: drive.
	4. To start the game, follow the "Launching under DOS" instructions
provided in the "GETTING STARTED" section of the Afterlife
Reference Guide found in this package.

"Making a Boot Disk - Windows 95 Users"
	1. Make sure the Afterlife CD is in your system's CD-ROM drive.
	2. Click the Start button and choose Run.
	3. Type BOOTMKR at the CD-ROM drive (drive D: on most computers).
For example, D:\BOOTMKR and press the Enter key. This will
start the game's Boot Disk Maker Utility. Follow the utility's
instructions to make a boot disk.
	4. Once the boot disk is made, reboot your system from the boot disk.
Do this by rebooting or restarting your system with the boot
disk in the A: drive. (Because the boot disk is in your A:
drive, your system will automatically boot up in the Windows 95
	     version of DOS.)
	5. To start the game, follow the "Launching under DOS" instructions
provided in the "GETTING STARTED" section of the Afterlife
Reference Guide found in this package.

Note: If you make a boot disk and your mouse is not working, use
the driver we supply in the support directory on the CD. To
access this mouse driver, change to your CD-ROM drive (drive D:
on most computers) and type CD SUPPORT (for example,
D:\CD SUPPORT<Enter>). At the SUPPORT prompt type MOUSE
	     (for example D:\SUPPORT>MOUSE<Enter>).

                     INSTALL PROBLEMS and CONCERNS

                             ERROR MESSAGES
"MAGIC ERROR Helnitialize Unable To Allocate Heap (size XXXXXXX)"
If you get this message when your run the Afterlife Install Utility,
you do not have enough free memory to run the Afterlife install
program. In order for the Afterlife install program to work
properly, you must have at least 3.5 megabytes of free RAM. You
can solve this problem by using a boot disk made by following the
instructions found above under "Making a Boot Disk".

"Whenever I Run the Afterlife Install Program, All I Get Is a Black
                   Screen Or Corrupted Graphics."
The Afterlife install program is using a high-resolution VESA mode
for its display. When you run the installer, it will automatically
check for VESA-compatible BIOS Extensions (VBE). If a VBE is found,
the install program will attempt to load it. Some video cards that
claim to be VESA compatible may have bugs in the BIOS code, or may
be otherwise incompatible with Afterlife. In this case, you may
wish to use an alternate VBE. Do this by running the install
program with a "/BU" command line switch (EXAMPLE: D:\>INSTALL /BU).
This will force UniVBE to activate. For more information on UniVBE,
see the DISPLAY PROBLEMS and CONERNS section of this Readme.

                                MS-DOS
                     SOUND PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"GRAVIS ULTRASOUND PLUG and PLAY PRO"
If you own a Gravis Ultrasound Plug and Play Pro, be sure to run
IWSBOS before installing or running Afterlife. If IWSBOS is not
loaded, your sound card will not be detected by Afterlife's sound
setup utility. Using a text editor, such as DOS EDIT, you may wish
to add the following line to the end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on
your boot disk: CALL C:\ULTRAPNP\IWSBOS. This will run IWSBOS
every time you start your computer with the boot disk. For more
information, refer to the documentation that came with your
	sound card.

"GRAVIS ULTRASOUND PLUG and PLAY"
Sorry, unless you have installed sound card RAM, this card does not
offer 'Gravis Ultrasound' support and therefore is not supported as
a Gravis Ultrasound by Afterlife. You may, however, select
'Sound Blaster 2.0' in the Afterlife sound setup utility. You must
first run IWSBOS for this to work properly. See above under Gravis
Ultrasound Plug and Play Pro for more information about IWSBOS or
	check your sound card's documentation.

"GRAVIS ULTRASOUND, ULTRASOUND MAX, ULTRASOUND ACE"
Make sure that you do not have SBOS loaded when you Install or play
	Afterlife.

"ENSONIQ SOUNDSCAPE"
If you have the Soundscape's Sound Blaster emulation enabled,
sometimes the Afterlife sound setup utility may detect your
Soundscape as a Sound Blaster 2.0. This will work fine, but, for
better sound quality and stereo support, you may want to select the
'Soundscape Audio' driver under 'Custom Setup' in the Afterlife
	sound setup utility.

                                MS-DOS
                    MEMORY PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"Memory Manager Conflicts"
Afterlife requires 8 Megabytes (or more) of RAM to run. The amount
of low memory (below 640K) is not important because the game runs
in "protected-mode" or with high memory. (Running a memory manager
is NOT a solution as some memory managers allocate too much high
memory for themselves and will almost always slow down Afterlife,
and in some cases, cause the game to crash.) The best way to make
sure you are not running with a memory manager is to use a boot disk.

"Disk Cache Software"
We recommend that you do NOT use any disk cache software while
playing Afterlife. Disk caching software, such as Smartdrive,
may interfere with Afterlife's internal caching. Also, this type
of software uses a significant amount of RAM that Afterlife could
use instead. Making a boot disk using our boot-disk utility
effectively removes any disk caching software that you may be
	running.

"Hard Disk Space"
Afterlife uses a swap file in order to create additional memory for
the game to use. (A swap file is a file, up to 16 megabytes in size,
that is created and used by the game as a RAM substitution, or
"virtual memory.") In order for your system to create this swap file,
there needs to be a total of at least 16 megabytes of free space on
your hard disk. If there is not enough available space on your hard
disk to create this swap file, you will receive this error message:
"Not enough disk space for swapping 16777216 bytes required DOS4GW
Fatal error (1011) VMM Initialization error". If you receive this
message, you need to free up 16 megabytes of hard disk space by
deleting old files or directories off your hard disk. (Afterlife
creates this swap file every time you run the game. If the amount
of free space on the hard disk changes between games, you may
experience problems that you didn't notice before. Also, keep in
mind that savegames created by Afterlife take up available hard
	disk space.)

                                MS-DOS
                         SOUND CARD CONFLICTS
Some lockups are the result of conflicts with your sound card's DMA
or IRQ setting. To test for such a conflict, run the game with NONE
chosen as your sound card. To do this, follow these instructions:

	1. From the ALIFE directory, type INSTALL and click on the
Configure Sound Hardware button. This will take you to the
	   Afterlife Sound Card Setup Utility.
	2. In the Sound Card Setup Utility, choose "Custom Setup."
The utility will request that you press the N key if you do
not have a sound card. For testing purposes, PRESS the N key,
	   then quit.
	3. Type AFTERDOS to play Afterlife.

You are now ready to play the game with NONE chosen as your sound
card (there will be no sound in the game). If the game locks up,
the cause of the problem is most likely something else. If the
game doesn't lock up, there's a good chance that a printer, sound card,
modem or other device is conflicting with your sound card's IRQ or
DMA setting. Consult the documentation that came with your sound card
or other devices for specific instructions on how to reconfigure them
in order to avoid a conflict, or contact the manufacturer directly.

"LOGITECH SOUNDMAN 16"
Users of the Logitech Soundman 16 sound card who experience sound
corruption in the game can run the "Sound Configuration Utility"
from the installer. Choose "Custom Setup" and select the
	Sound Blaster 2.0 driver.

"SOUND BLASTER 1.0, 1.05, AUDIOTRIX, MEDIATRIX PRO, DIAMOND SONIC SOUND
                   and PROMETHEUS ARIA 16"
Users of these sound cards may experience random lockups and/or
	screech sounds during gameplay.

"PRO AUDIO SPECTRUM"
Users with this sound card should note that the hot key volume
controls for their card will work while playing Afterlife. These
same hot keys however, are ALSO USED to toggle game functions.
To avoid confusion, bring up the "Audio Settings" Menu BEFORE
adjusting your card's volume. This will keep the game hot keys
from being triggered while you make the adjustment.

"OPTi MAD 16-Based Sound Card"
Users with this sound card may experience problems with the sound
test in the Sound Card Setup Utility, iMUSE. Additionally, users
may have sound problems while playing Afterlife.

                                MS-DOS
                        MOUSE DRIVER CONFLICTS
"Mouse Driver in Support Directory"
If your mouse is not working properly once
you've made a boot disk, use the driver we supply in the support
directory on the CD. To access this mouse driver, change to your
CD-ROM drive (drive D: on most computers) and type, CD SUPPORT
(for example, D:\CD SUPPORT<Enter>). At the SUPPORT prompt,
	type MOUSE.

                                MS-DOS
                    DISPLAY PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
Afterlife is a high resolution game that supports resolutions of
640x480 up to 1024x768. In order for your graphics card to display
high resolution graphics under DOS, it needs to be VESA (1.2 or later)
compatible. Most newer graphics cards have VESA support implemented in
their BIOS and should work fine with Afterlife. Some graphics cards
may require a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident program) provided by your
manufacturer such as VESA.COM, VESA.EXE, VVESA.COM, etc., to be run
before installing or running Afterlife. For your convenience, we have
included UniVBE 5.2 by SciTech, Universal VESA BIOS Extensions driver.

Please check with your hardware manufacturer to ensure you are using
the latest video, sound and CD drivers for your computer BEFORE you
call LucasArts' Technical Support.

"What UniVBE is and How it Works"
UniVBE is a universal VESA driver. Every time you run the game or
its install program, Afterlife checks to see if your graphics card
supports VESA. If it does, it will attempt to load. If it does
not find a VESA BIOS Extension or VESA TSR in memory, Afterlife
will activate UniVBE. UniVBE will then run a program that detects
your graphic card's chipset information, then creates and loads an
appropriate driver for your graphic card. Not all graphic cards are
	supported by UniVBE.

In some cases, you may wish to force UniVBE to activate. You may
wish to do this if you have display problems with the install
program or the game using your graphics card's built in BIOS. You
can do this by typing "Install /BU" or "AFTERDOS /BU"
	(EXAMPLE: D:\>INSTALL /BU or C\ALIFE>AFTERDOS /BU).
Alternately, you can force Afterlife to use your VESA compatible
BIOS by using the /BB switch in the same manner.

"When I Play Afterlife Using a Boot Disk, the Screen Size Changes So
That I Have To Readjust My Monitor Controls"
Some graphics cards have DOS utilities that allow you to configure
the card to match your monitor's refresh rate and screen
adjustments. The boot disk maker utility is designed to scan your
start-up files for these utilities for many popular cards. In the
event that your graphics card is not supported, you may need to add
these drivers yourself or adjust your monitor. Check with your
graphics card documentation or contact your manufacturer for more
	information.

"When I Play Afterlife Using a Boot Disk, My Screen Flickers,
                  Especially in Higher Resolutions"
This happens when your refresh rate is set too low for your monitor
at that selected resolution. See above.

                                MS-DOS
                 PERFORMANCE/SPEED PROBLEMS and CONCERNS
"Make Sure Your Computer Meets Game Requirements"
Make sure your computer meets these minimum specifications as
detailed under the "Configuration Details" section of this Readme.

For optimum game performance, we recommend the following:
- Pentium CPU
- quad-speed CD-ROM drive (MPC Level 2-compliant)
- 16 megabytes of RAM
- PCI or local bus graphics card
- 16-bit sound card

"How to Achieve Best Performance with Afterlife"
	1. For slower systems, especially with double-speed CD-ROM drives,
	   choose 'Medium' or 'Large' installation.
	2. If the opening logo appears choppy or screen redraws slowly
while you are creating your Afterlife, you should choose the
	   640x480 resolution in the installer.
	3. Make sure you have installed the latest CD-ROM driver available
for your CD-ROM drive. Please check your manufacturer's BBS or
Internet Web site for driver updates.

"NEC READY PENTIUM" SYSTEMS
You may have very noticeble slow-downs if you have booted your
system from any boot disk, such as one made by the Afterlife Boot
disk Making Utility. Therefore it is recommended that you play
the Windows 95 version of Afterlife instead of the DOS version.

                         BAD THINGS NOT TO DO
	1. Do NOT play Afterlife in a DOS box. This may result in
performance problems and possible game crashes on most computers.

                        UNINSTALLING AFTERLIFE
"How To Uninstall Afterlife DOS"
	1. Make sure that you are at the root directory of the drive where
Afterlife has been installed. (Default is C:\)
	2. Use the DELTREE command to remove the Afterlife directory
	   (EXAMPLE: C:\>DELTREE ALIFE <enter>).
	3. You should see a message that says "Delete directory "ALIFE"
and all its sub-directories?" Answer "Yes" to this message
	   by pressing Y<Enter>.
	4. In some cases there will be three additional files in your
root directory that can be deleted as well. They are:
	   UVCONFIG.EXE, UVCONFIG.DAT, and UNIVBE.DRV. To remove them,
	   do the following:
	    A.	At the root directory of C: type: DEL UVCONFIG.* (Example:
		    C:\>DEL UVCONFIG.* <enter>).
	    B.	Then type: DEL UNIVBE.* (Example: C:\>DEL UNIVBE.* <enter>).

                                MS-DOS
                         COOL THINGS YOU CAN DO
If you have a really fast system with a really good graphics card and
you have a good 17" or larger monitor, you might want to run Afterlife
in a resolution higher than the the Install utility allows. You can do
this by editing the AFTERDOS.INI file located in the Afterlife
directory on your hard drive (usually C:\ALIFE). You can change the
"Resolution=" setting to reflect your desired resolution. Valid
choices are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1600x1200. You must make
sure that both your graphics card and monitor are capable of
displaying the resolution you would like to use.
