CYLINDRIX README.TXT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cylindrix is a combat strategy game that takes place in a true 3-D
world. You fight to stay alive as you maneuver your ship along the
surface and in the air. You need to charge your shields, tag pylons,
and protect your radar base all while trying to direct your wingmen.

To make combat increasingly more difficult and challenging each arena,
or Cylindrix, has many variables such as light quality, physics, arena
set up, and the competence of your opponents. One of the most unique
features of Cylindrix is the 3-D AI, an advanced artificial intelligence
that not only reacts to circumstances, but maneuvers in three
dimensional space and takes directions from you, the team leader.

This game can be played as an IPX Network game, Null Modem game, or as
a very large Tournament Game. This game also features Customized Play
and a Practice Game.

Troubleshooting Cylindrix
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Help! My screen is black and nothing is happening!

A: Your computer is off...turn it on.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Sometimes when I play from Windows95 it all of a sudden
jumps to Windows and puts Cylindrix in the background!

A: Pressing certain key combinations will allow you to jump
back and forth between Windows programs. To disable this
right click on the icon you use to load Cylindrix (or the
Dos prompt icon you use if you call it from the shell) and
go to properties. Then go to the misc thing, and at the
bottom you will see some checkboxes for windows shortcut
keys. Make sure there are no check marks by key combinations
   you use in the game

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Cylindrix won't run! It says math coprocessor not found!

A: That's because a math coprocessor wasn't found. Read the
   box, math coprocessor REQUIRED.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Aren't you being a little rude?

A: No.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: The game keeps telling me to insert the Cylindrix cdrom, but it's
   already in the drive!!!!!!!
Q: Every time I try to play a tournament game Cylindrix crashes!
Q: Every time I try to Play the intro animation Cyindrix crashes!

A: Your cdrom drive letter may be set incorrectly...Cylindrix tries
to autodetect your cdrom, but it may not be working. To override
the autodetect and set your own cdrom drive letter run setdrive.exe
(in the same directory as cylindrix).
**WARNING** incorrect settings will cause cylindrix to crash! Be
sure to set the correct cdrom drive letter!

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Cylindrix is running REALLY slow!

A: Well, if you are running on a 486/66DX (minimum system) it
should run ok...(around 12fps in low detail mode). Unless
you have a nice Pentium you shouldn't run the game from
Windows95, exit to dos instead. (For those of you who don't
know...to exit to Dos hit the start button, then go to shut
down, then go to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode...it
doesn't really restart the computer...it's just a little joke)
You can change the detail levels from the options menu, setting
the game to low detail should speed it up substantially.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: I can't shoot my guns and fire at the same time with my CH
   Flightstick Pro!

A: In order to facilitate the hat, multiple buttonpresses don't
quite work right. This is a limitation of the Joystick itself,
   not of Cylindrix.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Cylindrix won't work with my video card!

A: Yes it does, you don't know what you're talking about.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Certain keyboard combinations won't work! Like if I
strafe while moving left, I can't move forward!

A: It's hard to believe, but different PC's have different
combinations of keys that won't work. I don't know if
it's the keyboards, or the BIOS, or the PC itself...I
have NO idea. All I know is that it's not my fault ;)

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: The animations and sound are running choppy during the
   cut scenes

A: This will happen on some computers running win95...
a fast P120 will run them fine through win95, but
p50's and below will be choppy. The sound and animations
should run fine even on a 486 if run from dos.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: This AI is absolutely awesome! You're a genious!

A: I know.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Cylindrix keeps crashing! What do I do?

A: I know, it does that all the time.

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why is there a box on page 19 of the documentation that appears not to
   belong?

A: It is an artistic statement. Have you no taste???

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: Cylindrix tells me that I am running low on ram!

A: If you are running low on ram try removing some TSR
(terminate and stay resident) programs. Also disk
caching programs might be eating up ram. Device
drivers for hardware you are not using are also likely
culprits. Cylindrix doesn't eat up much conventional
(below 640k) memory, so don't worry too much about that.
You can probably still play the game if memory is running
low, it just may crash after several games.

STUFF NOT IN THE MANUAL
--------------------------------------------------------

TURN OFF ANIMATIONS
-------------------
In the options menu you can choose to turn off animations. This will
disable all of the cut scenes between Cylindrix levels in the tournament
game, however it will not disable the ending animation.

--------------------------------------------------------
IPX GAME:

We will assume that you have your computers networked with an IPX
compatible protocol...it is way beyond the scope of this readme to
explain how to hook one up ;)

Up to six players can play in an IPX game. There must be at
least two players. A maximum of three people can play on each team
(red team and blue team), and there is no minimum for a team (everyone
can be on one team if there are two or three players).

When you choose to play an IPX game it will ask you if you want to
be a client or server. EVERY IPX game needs ONE and only ONE server,
everyone else should choose client. Typically, you want the fastest
computer on the network to act as the server. After everyone starts,
the game will attempt to synchronize (it will say 'waiting for nodes')
...if it is successful you will all go on the the choose team menu...
if it is unable to synchronize press escape to return to the main menu.

**IMPORTANT*******************
ALL COMPUTERS MUST BE IN THE SAME STAGE OF SYNCHRONIZATION AT ALL TIMES!
If one person 'escapes' out to the main menu while everyone is trying to
pick teams, EVERYONE must return to the main menu and begin synchronization
again! ANY TIME ANY PLAYER SEES THE MESSAGE 'IPX GAME ABORTED' ON THE SCREEN
EVERYONE MUST RESYNCHRONIZE IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ANOTHER IPX GAME!!
******************************

After the 'waiting for nodes' synchronization screen you will be asked to
pick a team. Each team can have up to three players on it. If more than
three players pick one team, the extra people will be put on the other team.
Any slots not filled by human players will be alotted to AI players.

After teams have been picked you will be given a menu similar to the one
in the custom game...everyone gets to pick their own vehicles. The server
gets to pick the Cylindrix. If there are any AI wingmen on the servers team,
he can pick them at this time. The first player on the other team can pick
any AI players, if any, at this time. If everyone is on the same team (this
can only happen with two or three players) the server can also pick the
opponent AI's and vehicles.

Once you hit start IPX game it waits for the other players and then the
game begins. The only difference between the IPX game play and custom game
play is that orders are disabled.

When the game is over all players will be returned to the menu where
they can select their vehicles and such. At this time you can either play
another game or quit.

**IMPORTANT****
If one player quits, ALL OTHER PLAYERS MUST RESYNCHRONIZE FROM THE BEGINNING**

--------------------------------------------------------

NULL MODEM GAME
---------------

First of all you must have two computers hooked up over a null-modem
cable. You can get one at Radio Shack, or steal one from a friend...

When you choose null modem game from the menu you can set your com
port or start the game...9600 baud is currently the only supported baud
rate. When you choose to start the game the game will attempt to handshake
with the other computer over the null modem connection. One computer should
be set as the master and the other as a slave. If there is an error, just
hit 'esc'. Once handshaking is successful you will be given a configuration
screen similar to the one in the custom game.

The master will be set as the red team and the slave will be set as the
blue team. Both sides can choose their wingmen and vehicles, and the master
can also choose the Cylindrix. Once the game begins it is the same as a
custom game.

After the game is over both players will be returned to the screen where
they can choose vehicles and wingmen. At this point they can play again
or quit.

**IMPORTANT****
If one player quits AT ANY TIME BOTH PLAYERS MUST EXIT TO THE MAIN MENU
AND RE-HANDSHAKE!!!
