Additional information on Windows 95
ͼ

Windows 95. Defcon 5 should not be run under Windows 95.
For maximum performance you should select shutdown and restart the
computer in MS-DOS mode. Alternatively create a shortcut to Defcon 5
which will restart your computer in MS-DOS mode. We have included an
   icon for your use.

To make it easier, we have included a PIF file for you to use, this
assumes a default directory of C:\GAMES\DEFCON5
It may be necessary to adjust some of the parameters in CONFIG.SYS and
   AUTOEXEC.BAT to match your system.

To use this PIF file you will need to copy it to the
   C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP folder. (DEFCON5.PIF)

Check the settings in the file by clicking the Right mouse button on
the icon which should be on your desktop.
   Select PROPERTIES.
   Select PROGRAM.
If the directory you have installed to is different to the default,
   you may change it here.
To check the DOS setting click on advanced, you may need to change
these settings to reflect how your system is set up for sound cards
and CD-ROM drives. There are comments next to the relevant lines to
show you where to change things.

Once everything is setup OK, double click on the icon to start
Defcon5, a message box will appear warning you that you are about
to leave Windows 95, this is your chance to change your mind.
On finishing the game, the system will go back into Windows 95,
it may do this via a reboot, don't worry, this is quite normal.

It has come to our attention, that some new systems with Windows 95
pre-installed, do not necessarily have the DOS drivers for CD-ROM
and sound cards available on the system. If this is the case, please
contact the manufacturer of your machine to locate the necessary files.

Finally a note courtesy of Gateway 2000 Technical support regarding
   machines with Windows 95 pre-installed.

   We quote...

    From Gateway 2000 Technical SupportĿ

This game requires that your soundcard functions in DOS.

To ensure that a "Plug & Play" soundcard will function in DOS
the ICU (Intel Configuration Utility) must be installed. The DOS
version of the sound driver software will then also need to be
     installed.

For further assistance with your particular brand of soundcard,
please contact the manufacturer of the card or the computer
     it came installed in.

This may apply even if you haven't got a Gateway 2000 machine.

ķ
CD Drives
ͼ

During development a number of apparent compatibility issues appeared
with a number of CD Drives. Whilst we have taken steps to rectify these,
it is possible that some drives have been missed. If you find any
problems with your make of drive, please tell us so that we can take
   steps to rectify the situation.

If you wish to disable video use the switch -V when running Defcon 5.
You will still get VOS communication video and end sequences.

If whilst playing the video sequences, the video looked smoothed and
then suddenly looks jerky, this could be due to the program deciding
that it cannot get the sustained data transfer rate that it needs for
a short while. To override this run Defcon 5 with the -N switch e.g.

                         DEFCON5 -N

If whilst playing the video sequences you get a lock-up (i.e. the video
stops running and the CD access light goes off) try running Defcon 5
with the -Z switch. It is possible that the CD device driver on your
machine is failing to deliver the data on time and gets confused.

                         DEFCON5 -Z

ķ
Sound Support
ͼ

VOS Speech. During the game you will be kept informed of base status
by the VOS. This plays directly off the CD. If your CD Drive is not
connected to your sound card, you will need to plug either headphones
or speakers into the front of the CD Drive.

If you have no sound, check that you have set up the sound with the
   options program we supply.

Gravis Ultrasound. Defcon 5 requires the program LOADPATS.EXE that is
   supplied with your cards software.

If you find the "left" channel coming out of your "right" speaker, run
Defcon 5 with the -S option to reverse the speaker orientation.

If you do have only 4Mb of RAM, we are sorry to say that you will not
be able to run any sound (i.e. sound effects and music). Trying
to run with sound will generate an Insufficient Memory message.
Howvever you will still have the CD speech to keep you informed of
   game progress.

ķ
Memory considerations
ͼ

Defcon 5 will be happiest with no memory managers what so-ever
installed. If you experience any problems whilst running the program
   try removing the memory manager.

Whilst Defcon 5 will run in 4Mb of memory, for optimal performance you
   will ideally use 8Mb.

If you do have only 4Mb of RAM, we are sorry to say that you will not
be able to run any sound (i.e. sound effects and music). Trying
to run with sound will generate an Insufficient Memory message.
Howvever you will still have the CD speech to keep you informed of
   game progress.

ķ
Game performance
ͼ

Considerable degradation of game performance will be apparent
if Defcon 5 is run with your PC's TURBO switched off (i.e. low speed).
This degradation will be even more pronounced if you are running
the game with one of the sound options on.

If things are still running slowly try running the low detail options.

ķ
Potential pitfalls
ͼ

If for some reason the Defcon 5 installation program does not run, you
   have two options.

Run the file INS.BAT, this will force the installation path
       to be C:\GAMES\DEFCON5.

Alternatively, copy all of the files from the IFILES directory to
a directory you have already made.

  Disk cacheing programs.
Whilst it is allright to use Defcon 5 with READ disk caches (Those
that cache all disk reads), it is inadvisable to use WRITE BEHIND
disk caching as the disk cache may not get an opportunity to write
out it's data until Defcon 5 is finished. This only really affects the
   disk operations.

   SMARTDRV.EXE users.
To find out what sort of disk cacheing you have type:

                     SMARTDRV /S

This will give information about the current status of smartdrv.

     Ŀ

                  Disk Caching Status
drive read cache write cache buffering
      --------------------------------------------
        A: yes no no
        B: yes no no
        C: yes yes no
        D: yes no no

If your status looks a bit like the one above, then type:

                     SMARTDRV C

This will disable the write behind cacheing but enable the read cacheing.
Your status would then look like this:

     Ŀ

                  Disk Caching Status
drive read cache write cache buffering
      --------------------------------------------
        A: yes no no
        B: yes no no
        C: yes no no
        D: yes no no
