Welcome to Fragile Allegiance. This file contains some information
that either didn't make it to the manual or we just felt you
should know ('cos we're like that here in Sheffield).
If this file doesn't help please give our helpline a call on
0114 2799020 or visit our web site at http://www.gremlin.com.

1. If you are not planning to run a network game you're advised
on the install option to set NETWORK to NO. This simply disables
the network checking which can very occasionally cause the game
to hang on running. This may happen in Windows 95 when you do not
have an IPX driver. If you wish to run a network game in
Windows 95 and it does hang up you need to install an IPX driver.
To do this simply right click on the Network Neighbourhood icon,
choose Properties, ADD...., Protocol and choose Microsoft
IPX/SPX-compatible protocol.

2. We have provided shortcuts for installing and running the game
from within Windows 95. You may run the game by simply clicking on
the Fragile.exe file but the shortcuts provide protection from
accidentally hitting the wrong keys etc. One point to remember is
if you MOVE or COPY the shortcut from it's original folder you
will need to enter the path in the Properties of the shortcut.

3. Gameplay: when you have bought supplies of pharmaceuticals to
cure your colonists of the various viruses to which they occasionally
fall prey, remember that you need Medical Centres on your asteroids
to enable the cures to be distributed. No Medical Centre = no cure!

4. Due to hardware conflicts, autodetecting for sound cards can be
risky process. If you know the brand, port address, IRQ, and DMA of
your sound card(s), it is recommended that you manually configure
these items. Lockups are also common when autodetection is used
when no sound cards are installed.

5. If you have a problem with video (black screens, strange blocks on
the screen etc.) you may have a VESA problem.
This is often caused by out-of-date video drivers. We
have included a program to help fix this problem. To run the
program make sure you are in DOS (don't run from Windows), then
move to the Fragile directory and at the prompt type VESAFIX. This
will run the program and fix the problem. If this doesn't cure the
problem you should contact your supplier for the latest version of
the drivers for your video card.

6. Although you can play Fragile Allegiance under Windows 95 if
your machine has 16Mb or more, for speed and general performance
we recommend that you play the game from DOS.

7. It is a good idea to turn off any screen savers you may have
running while you are playing Fragile Allegiance. You should do
this from the Properties of the shortcut: choose MISC, then alter
'Allow screen saver'.

8. Gameplay: when you send out a Spy Satellite to orbit a colony
belonging to an alien culture or another player in a network game
and click on it to bring up its information screen, there is a
'Destroy Spy Satellite' icon on the screen. This is so that you can
destroy it if you then sign a Non-Aggression Pact containing any 'no
covert action' clauses with that person - otherwise you will be fined.

9. The tutorials have subtitles as well as the voice-over, but these
will only be activated if you have no sound card. In order to have
both sound and subtitles, add /S to the command line when you start
the game. i.e. FRAGILE /S

10. The Fragile Allegiance CD can be removed from the drive once
you have started playing, however, if you want to see all the
animations in the game, leave it in the drive.

11. In the 'Minimum' installation of Fragile Allegiance there is
no music available in the game.

12. Gameplay: when hiring agents capable of APV delivery, bear in
mind that you can only send them on one APV mission per period of
employment and that the APV must be selected when you first hire them.
