  • Unique use case, looking for recommendations/u/buildapc_temp_1
I am looking for a NUC size MiniPC that I can use for virtualization. I am going to be running either Proxmox or ESXi on it. This MiniPC will be my on-the-go home server that I take with me. So I need it to easily fit in a backpack. Since I will be running VMs and not gaming I need: Ideally a really fast CPU with at least 8C/16T 64+ GB of RAM, I would love to put in 128GB of RAM 2x NVME PCIe 4.0 x4 drives (for RAID, probably 2TB each) WiFI support via M.2 card For IO (at least): 2x USB 4.0 2x

I am looking for a NUC size MiniPC that I can use for virtualization. I am going to be running either Proxmox or ESXi on it. This MiniPC will be my on-the-go home server that I take with me. So I need it to easily fit in a backpack.

Since I will be running VMs and not gaming I need:

  • Ideally a really fast CPU with at least 8C/16T
  • 64+ GB of RAM, I would love to put in 128GB of RAM
  • 2x NVME PCIe 4.0 x4 drives (for RAID, probably 2TB each)
  • WiFI support via M.2 card
  • For IO (at least):
    • 2x USB 4.0
    • 2x USB Type-A 10Gbps
    • 2x USB Type-A 5Gbps
    • HDMI (soft req)
    • Intel 2.5G ethernet

I have no problem putting my own RAM and SSD in. I would actually prefer it and buy a barebones kit!

For the CPU I was looking at AMD since running VMs with Intel and the E-cores might make things more complicated. Looking at the most powerful CPUs in this form factor I see that most MiniPCs are using mobile chips with custom cooling solutions. Looking at AMDs most powerful and latest Zen4 mobile chips I see there are:

  • 7940HS
    • 8 (16) Cores (threads)
    • 4.0 (5.2) Clock (GHz) Base (Boost)
  • 7945HX
    • 16 (32) Cores (threads)
    • 2.5 (5.4) Clock (GHz) Base (Boost)
  • 8945HS
    • 8 (16) Cores (threads)
    • 4.0 (5.2) Clock (GHz) Base (Boost)

I would love to get a system with the 7945HX for raw performance and core count but it seems there are no MiniPCs with the HX chips?

Also is the 8945HS too new to be in MiniPCs?

Thus my only option is the 7940HS. This leads me to the MiniPC guide and seeing the following manufacturers:

https://www.bee-link.com/catalog/product/buy?id=547

https://www.geekompc.com/geekom-a7-mini-pc-ryzen-7000/

https://www.gmktec.com/products/amd-ryzen-9-7940hs-mini-pc-nucbox-k4

https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-um790-pro

https://morefine.com/products/morefine-m600-r9-7940hs-mini-pc?variant=40245142945879

https://reatan.com/product/alloy9-7940hs/

https://simplynuc.com/product/cbm3r9ms/

Based on the 2024 buying guide I have to remove Geekom, GMKtec, Simply NUC for only having 1x M.2 drive. Additionally the Morefine only has 1 USB-C 40Gbps port. So I am left with the Beelink GTR7 Pro or Minisforum UM790 Pro or Reatan Alloy 9?

Is my research and reasoning solid? Do you have any recommendations?

If my choices right now are between the above links for a 7940HS based system, which do you recommend?

Anything upcoming that might fit my need better?

THANK YOU!!

Does anyone have any experience with this particular mini PC? Kinda scared to turn it on

Does anyone have any experience with this particular mini PC? Kinda scared to turn it on

For context I wanted something budget friendly till I saved up enough for my own rig or a gaming laptop. I was deciding between this or the beelink brand but saw a lot of good reviews on this one particular and it was cheaper. I dug a little deeper into ace magician and saw articles about Pre installed malware and spyware and was about to cancel my order till I found out you can just reload a fresh copy of windows on it after formatting everything (I don't know if that helps 100% though). It's on the way to my house as of right now

  • Opinions about ipega 9156?/u/Drotsu
I bought it and am waiting for it to arrive. Expect play emulators, android and pc, and maybe cod mobile in controller mode, without screen mapping (there is a video on yt that shows it connecting in bluetooth as a xbox controller by pressing home+r1 and It worked for him). Despite that, is this a good joystick at all? submitted by /u/Drotsu to r/EmulationOnAndroid [link] [comments]

It runs really well at medium on 1080p with fsr ultra performance turned on after rolling back my firmware. I have never done anything in adrenaline nor done anything in the bios settings. All I did was install two sticks of ddr5 ram and two ssd. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Just got my Beelink SER5 5800H Mini PC/u/hoadmin
Did most of the settings except for the TDP. Now I did not see any settings for the TDP in the bios. All I see was balance or performance. Is there a setting in the bios for wattage like other versions of the beelink. Booted up CPU-ID and the wattage it showed was 45 watts. This mini pc is supposed to 54 watts. I even set it performance. So is there a setting for the TDP for this mini pc? this is for the " Beelink SER5 5800H MAX Mini PC" https://preview.redd.it/7golhf0td4nc1.png?width=62

So with a USB stick loaded with the latest Ubuntu AND plugged into my router via an Ethernet cable, I proceeded to overwrite the HD yet again. This time I was logged into the internet and when the opportunity popped up I had the proprietary drivers downloaded. After the install was complete, I moved the SER5 back upstairs and the wifi6 has been working great ever since. Fairly simple process actually. I'm guessing that there aren't any current open source drivers for the Intel wifi6 that comes on the SER5. I'm quite pleased with things so far though and since Ubuntu and Pop_os! are close relatives, my user experience is reasonably close. So...I'd recommend the SER5 at this point. And I'm hoping for at least 3 years of service with it.

MOBOX - could this be the reason why my mobox crashes at higher resolutions?

MOBOX - could this be the reason why my mobox crashes at higher resolutions?

From Termux-s github.

The higher I take my res in COD4 multiplayer, the more likely it is to crash quicker. At 4K rez solution, it doesnt usually get past 2mins of gameplay. When I send the image out via hdmi to external TV screen, it crashes even quicker. It never seems to crash while at 640x480, 800x600 seems to be stable also, maybe had afew crashes. Or is it all due to 100% gpu utilization? I think my .exe has been 4gb ram patchd. I dont think it crashes in other games at high res, such as UT2004 at 2560x1440.

What do you think guys?

Something that could be fixed by rooting?

Seeking Advice on Lab Server Build: HP Elite Mini G9 Series or are there better alternatives?

Hello,

I'm building a lab server. It is going to run Windows Server with Hyper-V. It's my personal lab setup that I need.

I was looking at HP Elite Mini G9 series devices, specifically those with i7 processors. My plan is to install at least 64GB of memory and two 2TB NVMe SSDs.

There are lots of different options out there, and perhaps there are better alternatives available at the same price or even lower. I can also pay more if I find something much better, but I want the form factor to be similar to this HP Elite Mini G9. I just love these small devices, even if I have to sacrifice performance.

How to get highest quality game play experience from LAN streamed game?

I like playing game on my patio with my gaming PC, but I don’t like lugging it inside and out everytime I wanna play and I dont like it getting damaged in the process from the environment.

I bought a beelink ser5 Pro that is arrive today and my plan is to:

  • keep gaming pc in office connected to ethernet
  • bring beelink, UW monitor, keyboard and mouse to patio and connect with ethernet drop
  • load steam and stream game from gaming PC to beelink

What I’m expecting/wanting:

  • I really wanna sacrifice as little as possible quality wise. I want to still take advantage of my 4090 and stream games to my UW with 165 frames and minimal latency

Will steam be able to accommodate me here? Should I look into moonlight instead?

Neptune HX99 vs HX100

Is the HX100 worth it vs the HX99? I know it’s a newer processor but it’s an HS vs an HX and the performance difference between a 6600 and a 6650 isn’t really much.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Looking for something cheap and not very good

Just want something that i can just leave in the corner running soulseek with an external hard drive plugged in and then forget about it. Nothing fancy. All my googling is just turning up stuff that's powerful and good for the price and that honestly feels like a waste for what I want to use it for.
