Doug Sandy is the CTO of PICMG, an industry consortium focused on developing open and modular computing specifications. He, along with dozens of member companies who participated in the development of the upcoming COM-HPC specification, believes that engineers building edge systems need new hardware.

“Between converged network rollouts and advances in AI, the hardware requirements for edge computing have changed,” Sandy says. “Modern edge workloads need a combination of high-end compute, managed power consumption, and low-latency data transmission.”

These merging requirements led PICMG to pursue a new standard for high-performance computing. The result is COM-HPC, a computer-on-module specification that brings unprecedented computing power and I/O bandwidth to resource-constrained applications.

First ratified in 2021, COM-HPC has expanded to address various use cases. Most recently, COM-HPC Mini was created to address small form factor applications. “COM-HPC Mini introduces a credit-card-sized form factor with features like expanded connectivity support, efficient thermal management, and soldered memory,” explains Sandy.

COM-HPC Mini complements the consortium’s well-established COM Express specification but introduces a number of major advances. It worked great for office work and web browsing, YouTube video playback worked fine up to 8Kp60, and the USB4, 2.5GbE, and WiFi 6 worked up to expectation, but the GPU was a little on the low side, and multi-core performance could have been better. The cheaper Intel Core i5-12450H model will be slightly slower, but still offers great single-core performance and benefits from the same high-speed ports and interfaces.

The standard mini PCIe footprint means that WLE7002E25 is readily compatible with existing systems and designs, particularly customers whose devices have been using WiFi 4 or WiFi 5 standard mini PCIe modules. This simplifies integration since device manufacturers do not need to make modifications to their hardware to support a new generation WiFi module, thus reducing development costs and accelerating time-to-market.

The diagram below shows the dimensions differences between Qualcomm’s high-performance Waikiki M.2 E-key reference design and Compex’s standard-size mini PCIe module using the same Waikiki chipset.

Lower Power Consumption, Impressive Transmit Power

Compex’s RF engineers set themselves the twin targets of condensing the Qualcomm reference design by about 50% to an industrial standard form factor, as well as reducing its power consumption significantly. Compared with the high-performance Qualcomm reference design, Compex managed to achieve the size and consumption targets with a little loss in performance. The following is a comparison of the RF power outputs and consumption between the Compex WLE7002E25 mini PCIe module and the Qualcomm WK03.2 reference board.

Multi-Link Operation (MLO)

An important differentiator between WiFi 7 and WiFi 6 is MLO (Multi Link Operation). This allows a client to connect to the AP through multiple bands simultaneously. When first creating your character, you can choose from one of four classes, or ‘vocations’, Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Archer, and each class has a different edge in combat. As the Fighter, you can get up close wielding a sword and shield. If you’d prefer to ventilate harpies from afar, choose the Archer. As you progress in your adventure, you’ll be able to choose from a total of ten different vocations, each with a completely unique playstyle and equipment loadout.

But you’re not locked into your choice, you can switch up your vocation at any time. You’ll also have AI-controlled ‘pawns’ to aid you in battle and help guide you on your journey. You’ll create your own faithful pawn to accompany you throughout your entire adventure, and can also hire pawns created by other Arisen in other worlds to fill out your party. Just as Pawns from other worlds arrive to assist you, your Pawn will travel the Rift, and assist other Arisen in their worlds– bringing back valuable knowledge and items that they amass during their service. 

But be warned, like your pawns, the enemies you face aren’t short on smarts. Not only are there foes you’ll just encounter at night, using the darkness to their advantage, enemies will learn from you as well. Once you’ve faced an enemy, their pals could grow wise to your tactics, setting you up for a fall the next time you run into them.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is packed with varied locations, from lush fields to bustling fortress cities, seaside villages, and even arid jagged canyons, spread across two diverse kingdoms, that treat the Arisen very differently. But eye-catching as they are, these locations are not just for show. With real-time weather changes and a range of traversal features, they can be instrumental in battle. 

Throw an explosive barrel at an overflowing dam, for example, and you can cause a flood, knocking even powerful enemies off their feet. Don’t be afraid of trying something, chances are it’ll probably work, and it could well swing the battle in your favor. What have you got to lose?

The Mini IT13 mini PC ships with a 120W power brick, a power cord, an HDMI cable, a Thank You card, a user guide, a VESA mount, and a set of screws. It comes preloaded with an activated version of Windows 11 Pro.

We reviewed the Mini IT13 model with an Intel Core i9-13900H 14-core/20-core processor, 32GB DDR4 RAM, a 2TB SSD, and the same interfaces on CNX Software with both Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu 22.04. The Mini IT13 worked great with either operating system delivering excellent performance, smooth video playback up to 8K 60 FPS, and great I/Os with 2.5GbE, WiFi 6, and USB4 all working to expectations.

The two small downsides were the fan noise, but that’s not a big issue most of the time, except when the system starts and draws close to 80W during short peaks, and since the system is compact, the power limits had to be lowered to enable efficient cooling, so the Core i9-13900H CPU will not perform as fast as on a larger system with more room for cooling. The Core i7-13620H model will have slightly lower CPU and GPU performance, but we’d expect most features and the interfaces to perform just as well since it’s based on the same motherboard and wireless module.
