The story will not be continuing for the live-action Star Wars series The Acolyte as Disney+ has chosen to cancel that one after a single season. That show made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the first two weeks of its inaugural season and also showed up one more time the week of its season finale. It also scored relatively well with critics, currently holding a 78% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But fans of the franchise were not as happy with it seeing as it only has an 18% Audience Score. Creator and showrunner Leslye Headland did have plans to continue the series and made a pitch to Disney+ execs for how it would carry on into a second season and more. But with a price tag of $180 million for the eight-episode first season, the streamer was not interested in keeping the show going based on its subpar viewing numbers (there were already rumors that it would not go beyond its first season due to the cost). And that means that this one is pretty much dead at this point seeing as Disney owns the Star Wars franchise and is unlikely to allow the show to move to another venue.

This announcement counts back to the 2023-24 season and brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for that year to 22 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (28% of shows tracked) vs. 36 renewed (46%). Apple TV+ has given a second season renewal to its sci fi series Dark Matter which is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch (and is not to be confused with the 2015 Syfy series that was cancelled after three seasons). That show did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its first season run, and it did receive mixed reviews (though it currently holds an 83% Fresh Ratings and 83% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes), but apparently it has performed well enough compared to other originals on the streaming service. The first season ended on a somewhat ambiguous note (as did the novel it is based on), and now the show will be able to carry on the story and further explore its universe. Since Crouch is the executive producer and showrunner of the series, he will be the perfect person to build on the story as it goes beyond the novel. He had the following to say about what to expect from the show going forward:

In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box.

The second season will likely arrive at some point in 2025, and there is no word at this point on the episode count. Other Apple TV+ genre shows currently waiting for word their fates include Strange Planet, The Changeling, Sugar, Sunny, and Time Bandits.

Coming as no surprise, Netflix has renewed its British superhero drama Supacell for a second season. That show arrived in June with little in the way of promotion in the States, but it immediately jumped up to the top rungs of the Netflix charts. It started at the Number 2 slot then spent two weeks at Number 1, overall averaging 29 million hours a week watched through its six-week run in the charts. It has also spent three weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, averaging 600 million minutes watched per week. In addition, the show currently holds a perfect 100% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so the renewal had been pretty much expected. Series creator Rapman had the following to say about the direction of the upcoming season:

I can’t wait for the world to see Supacell Season 2. For me season 1 was always an origin story. Season 2 is when the journey really begins. Season 1 was my Batman Begins, Season 2 is my Dark Knight.

The first season of Supacell had six episodes and there has been no word yet on the episode count for the second year. Expect that to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026.

The revival of Daredevil on the small screen with Daredevil: Born Again will finally have its premiere on March 1, 2025, and a second season of that show has been confirmed at D23. Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series starring Charlie Cox after three seasons in 2018, and fans immediately started lobbying for the show to move to a new venue. Disney eventually relented and announced the return of Daredevil, but it was originally referred to as a “soft reboot”. But after Disney and Marvel execs saw the initial footage of the new show, they told the creative team to go back to the drawing board and pull more heavily from the original series. That led to the return of Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelsen (and Jon Bernthal will be back as The Punisher) and also generated a fair amount of excitement among fans who had been stumping for the show. And now, Season 2 has been confirmed with Kevin Feige saying that it will start shooting soon. That is definitely good news as the MCU television entries have been tending to go for only a single season lately. But the Daredevil character certainly has plenty of stories to carry him for multiple seasons, and the fan support as well.

Since Daredevil: Born Again is now confirmed for the newly-started 2024-25 season, this announcement will add one more to the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. It stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson.

HBO’s House of the Dragon will be moving forward to a fourth season as expected, but the show will wrap up at that point. George R.R. Martin had previously indicated that work was already underway for Seasons 3 and 4, but that fourth year had not been confirmed yet. We now have the official announcement on that as well as when the series will be ending. House of the Dragon has been a huge hit for HBO, but it is based on just one book–Fire & Blood–so it could only stretch the source material so far. GRRM has been more closely involved with the show than he was with Game of Thrones, especially the later seasons of that one, and he has indicated that he is very happy with the direction House of the Dragon has taken (though fans of A Song of Ice & Fire would much prefer that he spend some time finishing those books).

The fact that the show is wrapping up will not end the Game of Thrones franchise on HBO, though, as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is in the works following the adventures of Dunk and Egg, and seven total shows are in various stages of development including four animated entries. Production has begun on Knight and it should arrive at some point in 2025 along with the third season of House of the Dragon. For the latter series, the episode count of the final two seasons has not been confirmed, but expect around eight to ten eps each.

The 2024-25 season has just begun and this is the first new renewal counting for that year. It stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and Steve Toussaint and is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood.

Announced at Comic Con this past weekend, Neflix’s animated fantasy series Blood of Zeus will be returning for a third and final season. That show has not charted in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings across its first two seasons, but that is not uncommon for animated entries. It has been very well received by critics and audiences, though, currently holding a 100% Fresh Rating and 93% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. A three-season run used to be fairly standard for Netflix orginals with the third announced in advance as the show’s last. This gives the show the chance to wrap up its storylines. Creators Vlas Parlapanides and Charley Parlapanides had the following to say about what to expect from the show’s final year:

In Season Three, we are so excited to continue the story of Heron, Seraphim and the gods as they face their most dangerous adversaries yet, Typhon, Cronus and the Titans.

Three more renewal announcements came out of Comic Con yesterday (I covered the Krapopolis announcement at this link), and I expect even more over the last day or say. AMC has decided to extend Daryl Dixon’s journey in the TWD spin-off The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and will be bringing that one back for a third season. Its same-day linear viewing was not spectacular in its first season, but it made up for that with delayed and digital viewing, and the network wants to keep its Walking Dead franchise alive. The show returns for its second season on September 29th, and with this announcement it will probably start production on the third year in short order. There has been no word yet on a third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The Walking Dead: Daryll Dixon follows Daryl who sets out to find Rick Grimes but somehow gets carried across the ocean to France. He journeys across that country encountering the survivors there while also trying to find a way back home. It stars Norman Reedus, Clémence Poésy, Adam Nagaitis, Anne Charrier, Eriq Ebouaney, and Melissa McBride will be joining the cast in its second season.

Robert Kirkman announced at Comic Con that the animated superhero series Invincible will be continuing to a fourth season on Prime Video. That show has not performed nearly as well in viewership as Amazon’s other superhero series The Boys, but since it is an animated entry it is not as expensive to produce and it has still drawn decent viewing numbers across its first two seasons. The third season of the series was produced concurrently with the second and it should arrive in early 2025. That could then have the fourth season on target to premiere about one year later.

Invincible focuses on the titular hero who is the son of the powerful superhero Omni-Man. But as he starts up his career as a crime fighter, he learns that his father has some dark secrets in his past. The voice cast includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J. K. Simmons, Zachary Quinto, and Gillian Jacobs and it is based on the long-running comic of the same name by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Another animated entry that received a renewal announcement at SDCC is Hulu’s sci fi comedy Solar Opposites. That show is heading into its fifth season on August 12th, and the streamer has committed to keeping it around through a sixth season at least. The fourth season only spent one week in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but it has performed relatively well for a Hulu original. The streaming services tend to cap off their originals around the third or fourth year, but animated entries sometimes go longer and it is possible that the show could stick around for a few more years.

Solar Opposites follow four aliens who escape from their dying planet and crashland on Earth into a move-in ready home in suburban America. The voice cast includes Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone, and Mary Mack.

All three of these shows already had renewals in place and these announcements are just extending their runs, so they do not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. At this point, the score stands at 32 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (42% of shows tracked) vs. 21 cancelled and ending (28%). FOX is ordering more krap . . . Krapopolis, that is. Series creator Dan Harmon (Community, Rick & Morty) announced at Comic Con that the show has been renewed through its fourth season. The network has been all-in on this show from the beginning, and even though its premiere was delayed all the way from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023, FOX renewed it through a third season before a single episode had aired. It performed well in the ratings in its freshman year, mostly due to a boost it received from the lead-in of NFL on Sunday nights. Once the football season ended, its numbers dropped, though they were pretty much in line with the other animated shows that aired on Sundays. The second season is currently set to premiere on September 29th.

Since this show was already renewed, this announcement does not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. Halo: The Series will not continue at Paramount+ as the show has been cancelled by that streamer after two seasons. The most recent season arrived in February 2024 and it spent five weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, averaging an estimated 360 million minutes of viewing per week during that time, which is quite good for an original on that streaming service. It has also been fairly well-received by critics, currently holding an 80% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A reason for the cancellation has not been given, but the show is expensive to produce, and the streamer has been going through some cost-cutting measures. Evil is another genre entry that has been cancelled by Paramount+ even though that one has been performing quite well in viewership in its final season. These cancellations may be signaling a scaling back of scripted originals for the streamer as the post-Peak TV era continues to take its toll. Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television will shop the property around and it should draw some interest. Fans should also make a Call to Action on the social networks to help with this effort and get other venues interested in picking up the series.

It stars Pablo Schreiber, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, and Bentley Kalu and it is based on the Xbox video game series of the same name.

Syfy’s Resident Alien has been renewed for a fourth season, but it won’t be on Syfy anymore. For the show’s fourth year, it will be moving to sister network USA which is also under the NBCUniversal Umbrella. That network had mostly moved away from scripted programming the last few years but is trying to bolster its lineup for the 2024-25 season. The move will also entail a “significant budget reduction” according to Deadline because USA does not have a lot of money to put into its originals, and this is somewhat of a gambling seeing the linear viewing among the cable channels and broadcast networks continues to decline.

For those who wonder why the show did not stay at Syfy with a higher budget, that was apparently not an option. Its viewership on that network had dropped to its lowest numbers in three years during its third season, and the show would have been cancelled if not for the move to USA (I have had it On the Bubble throughout its third season). A large part of the reason that Resident Alien will continue is the viewership from its encore run on Netflix. The first two seasons were released there in February of this year and the show spent five weeks in the streamer’s Top 10. It is unclear if the fourth season is intended as the show’s last, and that may depend on the performance of prior seasons in streaming. The current season of the show will continue to be available to stream on NBCUniversal’s Peacock and the fourth season will likely premiere at some point in Spring 2025.

It stars Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, and Levi Fiehler and it is based on the comic book of the same name created by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.

Just a few days ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon, HBO has confirmed that the show will be continuing to a third season. The news does not come as a huge surprise as the show drew huge digital viewership numbers in its first season (and decent linear viewing stats), and it is a continuation of the premium cable network’s lucrative GoT franchise. HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi had the following to say about the renewal:

George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon. We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.

George R.R. Martin already announced that work was progressing on Seasons 3 and 4 of the show, but there was no official renewal in place at that time. And it is possible that this show could wrap up around its fourth season for several reasons. For one, it is very expensive to produce and the television networks and streaming services have been trying to cut back on costs. Also, it is based on just one book, so there is not as much source material driving it, though it is always possible that it could carry on beyond the Fire & Blood novel it is based on. Don’t be surprised if its fourth or fifth season gets announced as its last, even though the showrunner has said he expects the end to be “many years down the road”, but that should at least give the creative team sufficient time to cover the story of the Targaryen conquest.

Eric Kripke announced today that Amazon’s superhero series The Boys will be coming to an end with its fifth season. The fourth season of that show will premiere on Thursday and the fifth-year renewal had been announced in advance.  The show’s creator and showrunner confirmed in a tweet that it will be wrapping at that point:

Kripke had previously indicated that he wanted the show to wrap up around its fifth season, and it appears that Amazon is okay with those plans. The news does not come as a huge surprise, even though the show is one of the streamer’s most-watched originals. The Boys is very expensive to produce, and the streaming model is not designed for shows to run for many seasons. The number of subscriptions for an original usually drops each season, and these shows get to the point that they cannot justify the money that is being pumped into them. Netflix is ending its hugely popular originals Stranger Things and The Witcher with their fifth seasons, and Paramount+ just wrapped up Star Trek: Discovery with its fifth year. And typically only the most-watched shows make it that far as it is much more common for streaming originals to cap off around the third or fourth season.

The fifth season of The Boys will not be the end of the franchise, though, as spin-off Gen V is heading into its second season and could stick around for a few more years. In addition, a Spanish-language series set in the same universe is  in the works, and I expect more spin-offs to hit the lineup in the coming years. The show has expanded into a franchise, and Amazon will definitely work to get the most from that.

The Boys already counts as renewed for the current season and its final year will not arrive until the 2024-25 season at the earliest. This has not received a lot of coverage in the mainstream entertainment media, but the animated Marvel series What If…? will be coming to an end with its upcoming third season. Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation Brad Winderbaum recently told ComicBook.com that the third season could be the next Marvel animated series to arrive on Disney+ (with X-Men 97 having just wrapped up its first season), and that it will represent “the culmination of a trilogy”. He went on to say the following about the upcoming season:

We’re actually close to completing that one, and it really feels like you’ve gone through this amazing emotional experience with Uatu, in a way that’s… What’s great about The Watcher is that he presents himself as uncaring, and cold, and just an observer, but he cares more than everybody [and] anybody. That is on full display in that third season.

The first season of that show premiered in Summer 2021 and the second season arrived in December 2023. It has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings across its two seasons, but it has received good marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 91% average Fresh Rating and 79% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. A spin-off animated series Marvel Zombies is currently in the works, and since What If…? is an anthology, it could return for a fourth season and possibly more at some point down the road.

The release date for the third year of What If…? has not been announced yet, and I am going to assume it will arrive in the 2024-25 season, so it does not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. That stands at 25 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (40% of shows tracked) vs. 14 cancelled and ending (22%). What If…? is an alternate history anthology series that presents “what if” scenarios involving the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe, all monitored by the mysterious Watcher. The upcoming season will include Sam Wilson / Captain America, Monica Rambeau, Bill Foster / Goliath, Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, Alexi Shostakov / Red Guardian, and more. The voice cast includes Jeffrey Wright, Haley Atwell, Anthony Mackie, Teyonah Parris, Laurence Fishburne, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour.

Netflix has renewed its sci fi series 3 Body Problem, but the extent of that renewal is not clear yet. The streamer has given the greenlight to continue the series and to bring it to a conclusion, but the number of seasons involved has not been announced. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were hoping to have four full seasons to tell the story from the book trilogy by Cixin Liu, but Netflix has not committed to that yet.

3 Body Problem is one of the most expensive originals that the streamer has put out, costing $20 million per episode so far, and that does not include the exorbitant fee to attain the rights to the books. The first season topped the Netflix charts for three weeks and spent seven total in the Top 10. It has also spent three weeks at Number 1 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far. But at the price tag, the streamer is likely still not coming out ahead with this one, and I would not be surprised if the show got only an extended second season to wrap up the full story. That would put Benioff and Weiss once again in a position where they are rushed to end a television series based on a beloved book series.

The showrunners have extended their deal with Netflix, so execs at the streaming service seem to be happy with their work, and maybe they will convince the higher-ups to let it go for at least three full seasons. But at this point, the number of episodes and seasons the show will get remains unclear. Benioff and Weiss made the following statement after the announcement:

We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!

Coming as no surprise, Amazon announced today at its Upfront presentation that its superhero series The Boys will be continuing to a fifth season. That show has been one of Amazon’s most-watched originals in its first three seasons and it has spawned a successful spin-off with Gen V (which has been renewed for a second season) as well as the one-off animated series The Boys: Diabolical. In addition, as Spanish-language tie-in to The Boys universe is in the works as well. Amazon has turned this into a franchise and I expect it to stick around for several more years.  Showrunner Erik Kripke had the following to say about the renewal:

The Boys could be the best job I’ll ever have. What other show allows me to write about politics, capitalism, family, and exploding genitalia, though not in that order. The cast and crew are deeply grateful to Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to tell this story for another season. My only problem is that since this year promises to be free of any conflict or misinformation, we’re not sure what to write about.

The fourth season of the show is set to premiere on June 13th with three episodes released that day followed by one per week after that.

The television industry’s Black Friday claimed two more sci fi TV entries as Apple TV+ has cancelled Constellation after one season and Max has decided not to move forward with a second season of Scavengers Reign. (ABC also cancelled Not Dead Yet, and you can read more about that at this link.) The cancellation by Apple TV+ comes as somewhat of a surprise seeing as that streamer has been very supportive of its originals. Constellation did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its first season run, but few shows from that streamer succeed in placing in that chart. And apparently, the show did not draw enough viewers on Apple TV+ compared to other originals (according to the TV Grim Reaper, it drew just 1.2 million views in its first week) on that service to justify a second season so it will become another one-and-done sci fi TV entry. There is no word at this point on whether the show will be shopped around.

The animated Scavengers Reign premiered on Max back in Fall 2023 and it also did not chart during its first season run. But it has developed some notable word-of-mouth throughout the sci fi community and it currently holds a 100% Fresh Rating and 94% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. Max decided to cancel the show after one season, but Netflix must have been paying attention to the positive buzz because they picked it up and it will debut on that streamer on May 31st (the first season will also remain on Max for now). They have not committed to a second year yet, but word is that they will be paying close attention to the viewership when it starts streaming. Fans of the show should take this opportunity to make some noise on the social networks and get it trending, and they should also stage viewing parties so that Scavengers Reign enters into the Netflix charts and improves its chance of continuing to a second season.

Constellation focuses on an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space and notices that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. She then attempts to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover what she has lost. It stars Noomi Rapace, James D’Arcy, Julian Looman, William Catlett, and Barbara Sukowa.

Scavengers Reign follows the survivors of a damaged interstellar cargo ship who try to find their missing crewmates while dealing with the odd ecosystem of the planet that they find themselves on which can be both hostile and helpful. The voice cast includes Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Alia Shawkat, Bob Stephenson, and Ted Travelstead.

Coming as no surprise, ABC has cancelled its supernatural comedy Not Dead Yet after two seasons. I have mentioned it several times lately in my weekly Cancellation Watch column, suggesting that it was pretty close to the grave. Its ratings are down year-over-year, seeing a 17% drop based on same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic, and it has also been seeing a notable drop in its lead-in audience from The Conners this season. Its second season episode order was cut short to ten eps, in part due to the strike but also suggesting that the network had lost faith in the show. Not Dead Yet was actually a longshot for a second season to begin with seeing as its numbers were pretty soft in its first year. But several ABC execs were pulling for the show and decided to give it a chance to build its audience. The viewership slipped in its second year, though, and the network decided to cut ties with the property.

I have had this one at Bubble status since early in the season, and its fate started to look particularly grim when ABC was announcing renewals for its other shows while remaining silent on the status of this supernatural comedy. Whether it will be shopped around remains to be seen, and fans will need to make some noise to get it trending on the social networks to have any hope for a third season. A good place to start would be our current Save My Show Poll where it is at Number 11 in the rankings as of this writing.

The renewal announcements keep pouring in as Amazon has given the greenlight to a second season of its post-apocalyptic series Fallout and Netflix has given a fifth season renewal in advance for its fantasy series The Witcher. Fallout premiered on April 10th on Prime Video, and we have not seen the Nielsen Streaming numbers for it yet, but word is that it is performing quite well for the streamer so far. It has also been well-received by critics and viewers, currently holding a 94% Fresh Rating and 89% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. There was also an early indication that a renewal was likely because the show is getting a $25 million tax credit to move filming to California for its second season. This series comes from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld, The Peripheral) who have a multi-million dollar development deal with Amazon.

Over on Prime Video’s main competitor, a fifth season of The Witcher has been confirmed by that show’s Twitter account, and it will wrap up at that point:

The third season streamed last Summer and the fourth season is currently in the works, possibly arriving later in 2024. Henry Cavill has departed from the show and will be replaced in the role of Geralt of Rivia by Liam Hemsworth starting with the fourth year. The viewership was down for the show in its third year compared to its blockbuster first and second seasons, but it still performed quite well for a streaming original. And a five-season run is particularly good for a Netflix Original seeing as that streamer typically caps off its shows at the three-to-four season mark. The spin-off animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin did not perform as well in viewership, but there is still one additional animated movie in the works–The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep–and more could follow.

The renewal for The Witcher will not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal score seeing as its third year aired last season and the fourth season will likely not premiere until Fall 2024 or later. The announcement for Fallout brings the current score to 23 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (43% of shows tracked) vs. 11 cancelled and ending (21%). Fallout takes place 200 years after the apocalypse when people living in luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the world outside and are shocked by how things have developed while they have been safely locked away. It stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Walton Goggins and it is based on the the popular video game Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game.

The Witcher follows the monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia who is driven by destiny to help the Crown Princess Ciri, a young girl who possesses magical powers and who is on the run after her kingdom is sacked by invaders. It stars Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Eamon Farren, Anya Chalotra, Joey Batey, and Liam Hemsworth and is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.

The post Fallout Renewed for Second Season by Amazon, The Witcher Will Get a Fifth and Final Season on Netflix appeared first on Cancelled Sci Fi.

The alternate-history space race series For All Mankind will be continuing to a fifth season on Apple TV+, and it will also be getting a spin-off. The streamer seems to be shoring up its lineup of originals as it gave the greenlight to a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters last week. The renewal of For All Mankind has been expected as it is one of the streamer’s flagship franchises and the fourth season finale definitely pointed toward a continuation. The show has also been well-received by critics and viewers, currently holding a cumulative 93% Fresh Rating and 82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes across its first four seasons. The renewal has the show at a notable point seeing as streaming originals typically wrap up around the third or fourth season mark. For All Mankind is now past that threshold and is on track for the seven-season plan that the creators have for the series. Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss had the following to say about the renewal:

With each new season, For All Mankind continues to build out a fascinating world and capture global audiences through high quality storytelling that has been so skillfully developed by Ron, Matt and Ben. There is so much to explore and, we along with our partners at Sony, can’t wait to dive into this next chapter of the engrossing For All Mankind universe.

In addition to the upcoming fifth season, the universe of For All Mankind will expand with the spin-off series Star City. The press release gives the following description of the project:

Star City is a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

For All Mankind co-creators and executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi will be helming the new series and had the following to say about the spin-off:

Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of For All Mankind. The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race.

No casting has been announced yet and it will likely be 2025 before Star City and Season 5 of For All Mankind have their premieres. Other Apple TV+ shows from the current season awaiting word on their fates are Strange Planet, The Changeling, and Constellation.

The show typically jumps ahead about a decade at the end of each season and the fifth year will kick off somewhere around 2012 in the alternate timeline. It stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Wrenn Schmidt, Krys Marshall, Coral Peña, and Edi Gathegi.

The post For All Mankind Gets a Fifth Season Renewal Plus a Spin-Off appeared first on Cancelled Sci Fi.

Production on the third season of the Star Trek prequel series Strange New Worlds is currently in the works, and Paramount+ has given the greenlight for that show to boldly voyage into a fourth year. That one has proven the most popular of the new Trek shows on the streaming service, spending seven weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its second season run. The renewal comes as no surprise despite the fact that Paramount+ has been going through cost-cutting and previously cancelled Star Trek: Prodigy (though that is moving over to Netflix) and announced that the upcoming fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery will be its last. Strange New Worlds has been considered the most faithful of the recent Trek shows to the original spirit of the franchise, even though it has tinkered with cannon to an extent and produced some rather odd episodes like the crossover with Lower Decks and the musical ep. The third season of the show is expected to premiere later this year or early 2025.

As for the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks which takes place in the TNG timeline, that will be wrapping up with its fifth season. That announcement does not come as a surprise as showrunner Mike McMahan previously suggested that the fifth season could be its last. But after the announcement, McMahon and executive producer Alex Kurtzman did hint that the characters could return at some point in the future:

We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.

They are correct that five seasons and fifty episodes is a notable run for a streaming original these days, and the show will at least get the chance to wrap up its storylines. Season 5 is currently expected to premiere in Fall 2024.

Lower Decks is already counting as renewed for the current season and Strange New Worlds counted for the 2022-23 season and will not be back until the 2024-25 season, so neither of these announcements impact this year’s Cancellation/Renewal Score. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place on the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before Captain James T. Kirk commanded the ship. Captain Christopher Pike is in control with his first officer Number One, science officer Mr. Spock, ship’s doctor Joseph M’Benga, and more as they explore strange new worlds and seek out new lives and civilizations. It stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, and Babs Olusanmokun.

Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on the junior officers of the U.S.S. Cerritos: Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi and Sam Rutherford, and it is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis, as they maneuver the politics and boredom of working on the lower decks. It stars Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, and Dawnn Lewis.

Apple TV+ has finally gotten around to announcing a second season renewal for its MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. That show debuted back in November 2023 and there had been no word on its fate since it wrapped up its ten-episode run. It did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its first season, but the streamer referred to it as a “monstrous success” in the press release which announced the renewal. And in addition to the second season which is now officially in the works, Apple TV+ has worked out a multi-series deal with Legendary Entertainment for more shows that will take place in the MonsterVerse. Following is the statement from Morgan Wandell, head of international development for the streamer:

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, led by the brilliance of Chris, Matt, Kurt, Wyatt and the incredibly gifted and talented cast and creative team. We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise as we expand Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

No details are available at this time on the spin-offs but I expect additional news to arrive in the coming months. Also awaiting word on a renewal is For All Mankind, but it looks like a good bet that it will at least be back for a fifth season.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters follows two siblings searching for their father and uncovering their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Flashbacks to the 1950s reveal the origins of that group which was formed to track and study the monsters that start to emerge around the world. It stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Mari Yamamoto, and Anders Holm and it takes place in the MonsterVerse which includes movies such as Godzilla King of Monsters, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong and more.

It appears that there will be no more leaps for Ben Song because NBC has announced the cancellation of its Quantum Leap revival after two seasons. That show performed well for the network in its first season and received an early renewal to get as much of the production completed as possible on the second year before the writers’ strike. It returned this past Fall and still did relatively well, averaging a 0.29 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic which was just a few ticks below the network’s averages for dramas. But in January it was moved to the Tuesday 10 PM EST timeslot where its numbers dropped to a 0.18 score in the demo. It sure looked like that was a move to justify killing off the show, and ultimately that is what happened.

Showrunner Dean Georgaris had the following to say about how the second season wrapped up:

When we got the early renewal for Season 2, we knew we were not going to end it on a cliffhanger. We were going to end it on the first scene from Season 3, and we’re going to end it with the two characters together, but in a way that you never expected. And that sort of says to the audience, ‘look at all the great places we can go.’ So if it feels like a completion for audiences, that’s wonderful. It is a completion of part of the journey, but I think for us, it serves as the launch for the rest of the journey.

He went on to say:

The new reality we’re all getting used to is, it’s not just about one rating anymore. It’s not just about one number. There are multiple platforms. So the truth is, I think every showrunner and every show creator is living a bubble existence, for the most part. That just comes with it. And that’s fine.

I had not moved Quantum Leap to Bubble status yet, though it was getting close because NBC was renewing other shows while remaining quiet on this one. I had heard that it performed well in digital viewing, though no numbers were shared. And I figured if they were going to end the series they would go the same route as La Brea and give it a shortened final season to wrap up its storylines and allow it a more satisfying, binge-friendly run on streaming.  Or it could have also shifted to Peacock. But the networks tend to look at their shows as dispensable and seem to have no problem cutting them off without an ending. Now, a second Quantum Leap series has ended without the leaper returning home. If fans were to stage a Call to Action on the social networks and make enough noise, perhaps this one could at least get a final movie like Timeless did back in 2018.  Perhaps they could bring back Sam Beckett in that and provide a conclusion for the franchise.

With this announcement, the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season is now at 10 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (20% of shows tracked) vs. 21 renewed (41%). Quantum Leap is a continuation of the classic NBC series taking place thirty years after Sam Beckett disappeared. The Quantum Leap Project is reactivated in an attempt to find the lost time traveler, but Dr. Ben Song begins to leap ahead of schedule and loses his memories. The others involved, including his fiancé, must guide him through his leaps while trying to figure out why he leaped early. It stars Raymond Lee, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, Nanrisa Lee, and Ernie Hudson.

Netflix has renewed its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender through its third season, and that will close out the series. The show debuted on February 22nd with the second-highest viewership numbers for a Netflix original this season and it has averaged 149 million hours viewed across 20 million accounts. The renewal comes as no surprise, but I would have thought they might have tried to get a fourth season or more out of the show since the initial viewership has been quite high. But this one is certainly expensive to produce (around $15 million per episode), and Netflix execs apparently decided that a three-season run that mirrors the progression of the animated series (which also ran three seasons) would be best. There has been no word on when the second season will premiere, but I expect it will arrive at some point in 2025.

This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season to 19 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (40% of shows tracked) vs. 9 cancelled and ending (19%). Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world where the people of the four nations have learned to control the elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air and have lived together in harmony. But the Fire Nation wipes out the Airbenders in its first step towards conquering the world, not knowing that one survived and could be the last hope at uniting the world against them. It stars Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Ken Leung, and Daniel Dae Kim and it is based on the animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The Slayers audio series, which acts as a continuation of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, has been cancelled at Audible. This is kind of an odd cancellation announcement for this site, but Buffy fans who enjoyed audio series will certainly want to know. Co-author Christopher Golden posted the following on Twitter:

Working with this cast, the production team, and the folks at Audible UK–and seeing the joy in the fan community–has been one of the happiest experiences of my career. I’m sorry we won’t be able to continue on, but I’m so glad we were able to bring these characters back to you.

TV Line has reached out to Audible and Disney-owned 20th Television for further comment on the cancellation.

The nine-episode, Spike-centric audio series was released in Fall 2023 and included quite a number of members from the cast of the original show such as James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Charles Leary, and Danny Strong. More seasons had been planned, but apparently Disney is not interested in proceeding with the series. And since the Mouse House owns the property, that means that this one is pretty much done for now. The Buffy-verse has had a long life in comics, though, and perhaps some of the stories planned for the Slayers series will eventually see life in that format.

The post The Buffy-verse Slayers Audio Series Will Not Continue at Audible appeared first on Cancelled Sci Fi.

We had to know that the string of renewals could not go on forever (four over just the last week), and that has now happened as Paramount+ has announced that its supernatural drama Evil will come to an end with its upcoming fourth season. That show originally aired on CBS where it pulled decent ratings and received a second season renewal. But it shifted to the streaming service (then known as CBS All Access) starting with its second year where it has performed relatively well. It has not placed in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but word is that it has solid viewership for a Paramount+ original and it has continued to receive good marks from critics and viewers (currently holding a 95% Fresh Rating and 84% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes). Streaming shows typically only stick around for three to four seasons at most, and Paramount+ will cap the show off with its upcoming fourth year. That had been completed in 2023, but the streamer will give the show four more episodes to wrap up its storylines.

Series co-creators Robert and Michelle King had the following to say about the announcement:

We want to thank Paramount+ for giving us four bonus episodes to end Evil in the world in style. We will miss this show and cast. In many ways it was a dream project, but sadly evil will outlast Evil.

They apparently had plans for additional seasons, and series star Katja Herbers has called the news “super sad” and she suggested the possibility of Netflix picking up the show in a Tweet (though that appears to have since been deleted):

CBS Studios has an ownership stake in the series, so it seems unlikely they would allow it to move to Netflix or another streaming service. But if fans make enough noise, perhaps a fifth season could still happen. The fourth season is currently set for a May 2024 premiere, though a specific date has not been announced yet.  You can see the teaser at this link.

The renewals keep coming this season as Syfy announced yesterday that its supernatural drama SurrealEstate will remain open for business for a third season. That comes as somewhat of a surprise seeing as the show’s ratings were down notably in its third year, averaging only a 0.02 score based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic. That is down 67% from the 0.06 it had in its first year, and I have had the show On the Bubble since Fall.   But according to Deadline this is the Number 2 original scripted series on cable in the Wednesday 10 PM EST timeslot so far this season in the demo and in total viewers. That likely includes delayed viewing and that is not too hard to believe because it has little competition among the other cable channels these days.

SurrealEstate was resurrected after its first season when Syfy originally cancelled the show. It is possible that it has international funding and/or streaming deals keeping it viable, thus the reason that the network is keeping it going despite low ratings. It is also not a very expensive show to produce compared to other scripted dramas, and Syfy does want to keep some originals on its schedule. Don’t be surprised if its third season is announced as its last at some point, though fans should certainly be happier with a thirty-episode run as opposed to the original ten eps and a cliffhanger that the first season ended on. I would expect that the third year will premiere at some point in Fall 2024.

This is the fourth renewal announcement for the current season over the past week and it brings the Cancellation/Renewal score to eighteen renewed sci fi and fantasy entries so far (44% of shows tracked) vs. six cancelled and ending shows (15%). Wynonna Earp last aired on Syfy in Spring of 2021, but apparently that was not the show’s last ride as it will be returning with a 90-minute special later this year on Tubi TV. Vanity Fair broke the news and is referring to it as a “scripted special” instead of a movie, but the latter description appears to be more accurate. Regular cast members Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, Dom Provost-Chalkley, and Katherine Barrell will be returning and it will be titled Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. Following is what series creator Emily Andras told Vanity Fair about the film which will “feature a revenge-driven female villain”:

The special will catch up with the Wynonna Earp characters some time after the end of season four. “Doc and Wynonna have been on an adventure, and Waverly and Nicole have been at home in [the Earp hometown of] Purgatory, doing their thing. I think it’s going to be really interesting to see, hopefully, what gets everybody home—maybe facing a challenge they’ve never faced before, something pretty intense. It’s all your favorite—hopefully—character moments, but also a little bit about growing up and sort of, like, being who you are now and earning all your choices.”

Shooting is set to begin soon, with Earp veteran Paolo Barzman directing, and the film should debut on the free streaming service later this year. There is currently no indication that this could lead to the promised fifth season that Syfy never produced, and in the article title Vanity Fair refers to it as “One Last Ride”.  But this is still a testament to the efforts by dedicated “Earpers” to save the show and proves that sometimes those campaigns do produce results.

Wynonna Earp follows the great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp who inherits her father’s magical gun and her family’s legacy fighting supernatural beings who pose a threat to the people living in and around the Ghost River Triangle, a cursed territory near the Canadian Rockies. It is based on the IDW comic book series of the same name by Beau Smith.

Coming as no surprise, Disney+ has renewed its fantasy series Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season. That show debuted on December 20th and has spent three weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, averaging over 600 million minutes viewed per week based on that company’s estimates. It had a total of 26.2 million views across Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks of streaming according to the Mouse House. Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan have the following to say about the renewal:

I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+!. Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!

That final comment confirms that the second season will be based on the second book in the series The Sea of Monsters. The renewal for the show was pretty much expected because of strong viewership and because of the franchise potential of the property. If this one continues to perform well, it gives Disney another tentpole streaming franchise to go along with its MCU and Star Wars shows. The second season of Percy Jackson will likely premiere at some point in 2025.

It has been over four years since the second season of the horror anthology The Terror aired, and AMC has just announced at the TCAs that the show will be returning for a third year. That show first premiered in Spring 2018 and performed well for a basic cable series. It was based on the Dan Simmons novel of the same name and told the story of the book across its first season. AMC executives were impressed with the viewership and decided to bring it back for a second year, turning it into a season-long anthology series. The second season did not perform as well in the ratings, and even though AMC execs said that they were considering ideas for a third year, the show disappeared from the schedule. I counted it as ended after there had been no word on its fate for over a year.

But the network has now decided to bring the show back, and the upcoming six-episode season will be based on the 2013 Victor LaValle novel The Devil in the Silver. Following is the description provided by Deadline:

The Terror: Devil in Silver tells the story of Pepper, a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets and perhaps even the very devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face down the entity that thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls. But doing so might prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.

The cast has not been announced yet, but Karyn Kusama will direct the first two episodes with LaValle and Chris Cantwell writing. It is currently scheduled for a 2025 premiere.

The first season of The Terror follows the Royal Navy polar explorer ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror which get stuck in the Northwest Passage and must deal with a strange menace that threatens the lives of all on the ships. It stars Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, Paul Ready, and Harry Goodsir. The second season takes place during World War II in a U.S. internment camp for Japanese Americans as they deal with a supernatural threat from ancient folklore. It stars Derek Mio, Kiki Sukezane, Cristina Rodlo, Shingo Usami, and George Takei.
