With iOS 18, iPhone’s dialer will finally get the most basic smartphone feature

  • Apple will introduce T9 dialing to the iPhone dialer with the iOS 18 update.
  • T9 dialing allows users to type a contact’s name using the number pad, instantly suggesting matching contacts.
  • Until now, users have had to type in phone numbers or search for contacts through the Contacts app to make calls.

Apple’s WWDC announcements about iOS 18 mainly revolved around Apple Intelligence and the company’s implementation of AI in its core products. The feature that got me the most excited was that iOS 18 is finally bringing T9 dialing to iPhones. Is this a sign that I’m getting old? Maybe. But am I still thrilled about it? Absolutely.

What is T9 dialing?

T9, short for “Text on 9 keys,” is a predictive text technology that revolutionized typing in the pre-smartphone era. With T9, users could type in English words using a numeric keypad by pressing a single key for each letter (instead of having to multi-tap numbers to register letters), and the software would intelligently predict the word.

  • The iOS 18 wallpapers are here to download and use on your Android phone.
  • There are two wallpapers: one ideal for light mode and another ideal for dark mode.
  • Please download them from the Drive link to ensure you get the high-res versions.

Today, Apple officially launched iOS 18, the latest software version powering iPhones. iOS 18 is now rolling out in beta form to supported iPhones (pretty much everything after the 2018 iPhone XS is supported). If you’re brave enough to download it, you’ll get treated to two new iOS 18 wallpapers, among all the new features Apple announced today.

However, installing the beta is risky business. We are already hearing reports of lots of problems, including overheating, disappearing icons, and more.

Apple confirms that it wants Gemini supported on iPhones

  • Post-keynote at WWDC24, key Apple executives confirmed that the company wants Google’s Gemini on iPhones.
  • In fact, the company wants all manners of AI systems powered by large language models.
  • For now, only OpenAI is an official partner with Apple, which brings ChatGPT to the Apple Intelligence system.

At WWDC24 today, Apple took the wraps off Apple Intelligence, the company’s new umbrella name for the various generative AI tools that will soon come to iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. To make at least some of these AI features a reality, Apple is relying on a partnership with OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT.

However, weeks before the WWDC24 keynote, we heard rumors that Apple was also in talks with Google about bringing that company’s Gemini to iPhones. That didn’t appear to pan out, but that doesn’t mean the deal is off the table.

New iPhone app means Xiaomi isn’t the only brand with Leica tech onboard

leica lux

  • Leica LUX is a new app that emulates the Leica experience on the iPhone.
  • There are 11 color profiles to choose from to help your photos stand out.
  • In addition to an automatic mode, there’s also an Aperture mode that emulates the style of real Leica lenses.

Xiaomi might be the only company with official Leica branding, but iPhone users will soon be able to at least somewhat emulate this experience. Leica’s new LUX app is designed to mimic the experience you’d get from Leica lenses.

The app does this through a combination of software trickery and AI. There are 11 different color profiles designed to match current Leica cameras as well as classic cameras from the past. There’s a fully automatic camera mod that works similarly to the Apple camera, but there’s also an Aperture mode that uses AI to mimic the style, bokeh, and aperture you’d get from lenses like the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH.

  • iOS 18 will bring automatic transcription to Apple’s Voice Memos app.
  • The transcription feature is part of Apple Intelligence, and will also come to Notes and Phone apps.
  • Apple Intelligence features are coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.

Apple’s highly-anticipated WWDC keynote delivered on its promise of AI announcements, unveiling a suite of features set to land on iPhones with iOS 18 later this year. One of the prevailing themes among the announcements was the sense of déjà vu, with many of the new features mirroring similar existing functionalities on Android devices.

From the ability to personalize your home screen layout to AI-powered image editing in the Photos app, it seemed like Apple was playing catch-up with many old Android features. One such new ‘old’ feature is coming to Apple’s built-in voice recorder app, Voice Memos.

  • Apple has entered into a partnership with OpenAI.
  • The partnership will bring ChatGPT-like features to iPhone, iPad, and iOS.
  • Elon Musk warns that he’ll ban Apple devices at all of his companies due to the integration.

There were rumors about Apple and OpenAI partnering up for a collaboration that would bring ChatGPT-like AI features to Apple’s devices. This was finally made concrete after an announcement during WWDC. Now Elon Musk is threatening to ban Apple devices at his companies.

During its WWDC keynote presentation, Apple announced it is teaming up with OpenAI to enhance its virtual assistant Siri. When iOS 18 rolls out, Siri will be integrated with ChatGPT-like smarts, giving it the flexibility of a conversational AI chatbot. While most queries will be handled by Apple’s technology, an algorithm will determine if a task should be handed over to OpenAI’s technology.

  • Microsoft Phone Link will soon let you broadly access your phone from Windows File Explorer.
  • The new feature of Microsoft’s Cross Device Experience Host looks set to bring the same accessibility to files from your phone as from an external drive.
  • It’s not yet known when the feature will become widely available.

The next generation of Microsoft’s Phone Link feature may soon allow you to access your Android phone files from File Explorer on your Windows 11 device. The useful development would give you wirelessly access to your phone from your PC as easily as if it were an external hard drive with a wired connection to your computer.

This is the latest reported utility of the new Cross Device Experience Host from Windows, which looks set to subsume Phone Link as it rolls out more fully. Its clear aim is to make the connection between Windows and your Android phone more seamless, with features such as using your phone as a webcam and copying text from your phone’s photos coming to light earlier in the year.

  • Apple announced the upcoming macOS Sequoia update at its annual WWDC event.
  • The update brings a new Continuity feature, iPhone Mirroring, alongside window tiling and other long-awaited features.
  • You can now use your Mac’s keyboard and trackpad to interact with iPhone apps.

At its WWDC 2024, Apple announced macOS Sequoia and a significant expansion to Continuity, dubbed iPhone Mirroring. As the label suggests, the feature will let you remotely control your smartphone directly from a Mac. To access this feature, Apple is adding a new iPhone Mirroring icon that will permanently live in the Mac dock. Clicking on it will launch a new window with the iPhone’s home screen streamed wirelessly.

You can launch and interact with any iPhone app using the Mac’s trackpad and keyboard and the phone will even pass along audio to the computer. Moreover, since this feature is part of Apple’s broader Continuity suite, it extends beyond screen mirroring. For starters, iPhone notifications will now show up alongside your Mac notifications and you can simply click on one to launch screen mirroring.

These are all the new AI features coming to Apple Watch with watchOS 11

  • watchOS 11 introduces a Translate app that can recognize when you’re traveling and become more accessible.
  • The Photos watch face can analyze your images and make recommendations.
  • watchOS 11 launches in fall, 2024.

Artificial intelligence was a very important topic at WWDC 2024, as it has been in most recent tech announcements and events lately. Of course, macOS, iOS, and iPadOS got most of the AI love here, but watchOS wasn’t totally left out. If you’re specifically looking for AI and machine learning capabilities, Apple announced a couple of watchOS 11 features for Apple Watch users to look forward to.

For starters, watchOS 11 introduces a new Translate app. It allows you to translate languages straight from your wrist, without taking out your iPhone at all. Additionally, the app can recognize when you’re traveling to a different country, as well as which language is spoken there. It will automatically show a widget in the Smart Stack, when it deems helpful. It will support 20 languages.

iOS 18 gets Android Quick Settings-style revamped Control Center, adds lockscreen shortcuts

Credit: Apple
  • iOS 18 will bring a new Quick Settings-like feature to the Control Center. You’ll also be able to add custom controls to the lockscreen.
  • Control Center is also getting new grouped control sections for Home devices and media playback.
  • These new controls will also support 3rd party apps that integrate with the Control API.

Control Center is getting a major new revamp in time for iOS 18. The redesigned experience is all about customization. Just like we are seeing from the new Home Screen revamp, this whole experience is going to feel pretty familiar to Android users.

There are new groups of controls for media playback, and Home devices, which can be accessed by swiping down from the top-right edge. There’s also a new Controls gallery that lets you add your own custom controls, including those from select third-party apps. This could include controls for adjusting car settings,  a thermostat, or really just any function as long as it is designed to work with the new Control API.

Samsung takes swipe at Apple for being late to the AI party

  • Apple unveiled a bevy of new AI features coming with the next OS update during WWDC.
  • Samsung has now responded to the showcase and doesn’t seem too impressed.
  • Nothing also responded with a jab of its own.

Today is the start of WWDC, and with it, Apple’s keynote presentation, during which it announced new AI features. However, Samsung doesn’t seem too impressed with what its rival is offering.

During the first day of WWDC, Apple revealed a whole slate of AI features that will arrive with the next versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. For example, the Notes app is getting voice transcription and AI summaries. Another feature called “Clean Up” uses AI to erase items from a photo.

Apple’s Smart Script feature could be a boon for untidy iPad jotters

  • Apple has announced new features that should enhance the writing experience on iPad.
  • Smart Script introduces several editing tools, including the ability to tidy up a user’s handwriting in real time.
  • Apple Intelligence also powers image generation and summarization tools.

While plenty of new features are heading to iPhones via iOS 18, Apple didn’t forget about iPadOS 18. At WWDC on Monday, the company announced several new features for its slate and the Apple Pencil stylus, which includes AI-powered tools that enhance written notes.

The most impressive feature is Smart Script, which can learn and identify a user’s handwriting and use this information to tidy up content where required. Apple says this feature “allows users to write quickly without sacrificing legibility.”

Apple is improving iPhone notifications, but not in the way people want

Apple WWDC24 Apple Intelligence Priority Notifications 1
Credit: Apple
  • Apple has introduced AI-driven notification management in iOS 18.
  • Apple’s AI will offer notification summarization, summing up key information from conversations.
  • It will also enable iPhones to extract important insights from notifications, such as upcoming appointments.

As expected, Apple’s WWDC kickoff keynote focused on the Apple Intelligence features coming to all Apple products. Apple announced a slew of exciting updates for iOS 18, and notification management has also improved slightly.

Traditionally, iOS users have grappled with a horrible notification management system that is objectively subpar compared to Android’s more intuitive approach. With iOS 18, Apple is addressing these concerns (or at least trying to) by leveraging the power of artificial intelligence.

Apple Photos draws inspiration from Magic Editor with new Clean Up feature

  • Apple has announced that new AI-powered editing tools are coming to the Photos app.
  • The biggest feature, dubbed Clean Up, is similar to Android’s Magic Eraser.
  • Other features include editing via Siri, Memories, and more.

Apple announced several new features coming to the redesigned Photos app on iOS 18, but one will be very familiar to Android users.

At its WWDC keynote on Monday, the company introduced Clean Up, an image editing tool powered by Apple Intelligence AI. The feature can erase unwanted items from a photograph, such as people in the background or objects in the foreground.

Siri gets a free ChatGPT boost: Apple partners with OpenAI, but will dictate terms

  • Apple has officially announced a partnership with OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT.
  • Later this year, ChatGPT will occasionally chime in to answer creative and complex questions when you invoke Siri.
  • Siri will ask for your consent before sharing individual prompts with ChatGPT.

After months of anticipation and leaks, Apple has finally announced that it’s teaming up with AI startup OpenAI. The partnership is set to bring ChatGPT-esque smarts to Siri on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Notably, this ChatGPT integration was only one of several new AI features launched under the banner of Apple Intelligence at the company’s WWDC event today.

When iOS 18 launches later in 2024, you’ll be able to converse with Siri via natural language prompts similar to Google’s Gemini chatbot on Android. This marks a major leap forward for Siri, transforming it from a rigidly structured assistant into a conversational AI chatbot. However, Siri will not rely on OpenAI’s models for most of its responses. Instead, Apple says that it will only pass on select questions to ChatGPT.

Apple just gave Siri a big AI upgrade, can now use apps for you

  • Siri is getting an overhaul with AI at the center.
  • Apple has made Siri more natural, contextually relevant, and personal.
  • The virtual assistant can now control features and actions in apps.

As expected, WWDC 2024 has been filled with a plethora of software announcements. Many of these announcements are related to Apple’s AI push, including a big revamp for Siri.

Today, Apple revealed its virtual assistant is getting infused with the company’s new “Apple Intelligence.” The Cupertino-based firm claims that Siri has been improved to be more natural, contextually relevant, and personal than before.

Apple finally brings call recording to iPhones with iOS 18, adds AI magic on top

  • Apple will now let you record audio for the Notes app and on phone calls.
  • In both cases, a transcription will be produced, and an AI summary will be made available.
  • Other participants will be notified if you start recording a call.

Apple is introducing call recording for the first time in iOS 18, with Apple Intelligence supplementing the new features with some quick-reference AI summaries.

Announced at WWDC, the Phone app allows you to start recording calls, and a transcript will be automatically generated in real time. If you later need a reminder of what you discussed, Apple Intelligence will provide a summary of the conversation.

Apple ‘Genmoji’ and Image Playground introduce gen AI emojis and mood pics

  • Apple has introduced a new feature for iOS 18 called ‘Genmoji,’ which uses AI to create emojis.
  • It also revealed Image Playground, a photo-generating AI tool that is available as a separate app.
  • Apple Intelligence, along with these features, is available for free on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

AI has become a huge deal in the mobile industry, and Apple doesn’t plan to fall behind. Apple Intelligence is all the hype at WWDC 2024, introducing features that aim to fulfill all your artificial intelligence needs straight from its operating systems. Two very fun features it hopes users might enjoy are Genmoji and Image Playground.

Genmoji allows you to create emojis using AI on the Messages app, straight from the keyboard. When you launch the feature, you’ll be able to provide a description of the Genmoji you would like Apple Intelligence to create. It will then load for a bit and create multiple options for you. And because Apple Intelligence knows who is in your photo gallery, you can pick someone, and it will make a Genmoji of that person for you. Pretty fun, right?

Apple Intelligence is official: Coming this summer to iPhone, iPad, and Mac

  • Apple Intelligence is its new AI software suite which will integrate itself into Siri and pretty much every app experience.
  • There’s also summarization tools that make it easy to get to summarize articles, notifications, text messages, and more.
  • The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will support Apple Intelligence, as well as devices with a M-class chip.
  • The new AI features are expected to arrive this fall alongside the Betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and the latest version of MacOS.

While Google was the first company to embrace AI on its mobile devices, Samsung and many others quickly followed suit. This led to increasing rumors that Apple would introduce its own take on AI at WWDC 2024. Right on schedule, Apple Intelligence has now been fully unveiled during the company’s big keynote.

Apple’s approach to AI focuses on automation and simplifying tasks by integrating the technology into its UI and the majority of its apps, enabling users to work smarter, not harder.

Apple Mail gets familiar Gmail-like upgrades and new AI features

Apple WWDC 2024 ios mail categories
Credit: Apple
  • Apple Mail now separates your inbox into categories to filter out emails about promotions and newsletters.
  • The new look is very similar to the Gmail setup, with categories like Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions.
  • Apple Intelligence will also help you proofread, summarize, or rewrite your emails.

Apple just announced a useful upgrade to the Apple Mail app in the WWDC stream. Your inbox will now be organized into categories, such as promotions, newsletters, and transactions. The idea is to separate those routine emails that you don’t want to delete or junk from your main inbox feed.

This new approach looks a lot like the way Gmail has done things for a while, with the categories also being very similar. Primary is where personal and time-sensitive emails live, Transactions are where confirmations and receipts go, Updates are for news and social notifications, and Promotions are for marketing emails and coupons.

You’ll need the best iPhone to run Apple Intelligence for now

  • The new Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC will not work on most existing iPhones.
  • Due to hardware limitations, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will work.
  • It is likely that all iPhone 16 models will be able to use Apple Intelligence, but they will not be available until at least September this year.

Today, at WWDC 2024, Apple finally took a big step into the world of artificial intelligence, or AI. The company announced a slew of new iPhone, iPad, and Mac features under the umbrella of “Apple Intelligence.” This is similar to how Samsung puts all its AI features under Galaxy AI, and Google does the same under Gemini.

Unfortunately, not every iPhone owner will be able to access Apple Intelligence. Due to hardware limitations, only two existing iPhones will support it: the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Thanks to the A17 Pro chipset inside these phones, they are the only ones capable of supporting the on-device AI features launched with Apple Intelligence.

Apple finally gets the message: Here’s when RCS support will roll out to iPhones

  • RCS support will arrive as part of iOS 18 this fall.
  • This is expected to be the RCS Universal Profile 2.4, which differs a little from Google’s current version.

In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, Apple confirmed RCS messaging support will officially arrive as part of iOS 18 later this fall. The new standard will replace SMS as the default protocol when communicating between Android and iPhone devices, hopefully putting an end to the dreaded green bubble drama. In fact, Apple didn’t talk about it all, simply adding a reference to RCS support into a single slide about iOS 18.

It’s no shocker that Apple isn’t making a song and dance about this. It’s been dragging its feet on embracing RCS, despite nudges from the EU and various other regulatory heavyweights. Late last year, it finally caved, admitting it would adopt RCS eventually but gave us the bare minimum on the details. It was largely expected Apple would reveal RCS details here, but Apple events are usually more about the cheers than the jeers. Frankly, Apple doesn’t want to highlight what feels like a concession, so they opted for a slide mention — smooth, Apple, real smooth.

iOS 18 brings Game Mode to iPhone, promises smoother gaming experience

  • iOS 18 is introducing Game Mode to iPhones.
  • Game Mode improves performance, reduces latency with accessories, and decreases background activity.

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced Game Mode for iPhone, a feature that it says will improve the gaming experience in iOS 18. This follows the introduction of Game Mode for Macs in macOS Sonoma in 2023.

According to Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, this Game Mode on iOS 18 will enhance performance by maximizing frame rates and reducing background activity when playing games on iPhone. This should free up some resources so that higher-end games can better utilize them. Game Mode should also improve the response time with AirPods and gaming controllers, reducing lag and giving you those milliseconds you need.

Tap to Cash on Apple Pay lets you bump two iPhones to pay each other

Credit: Apple
  • Apple Pay is getting a new Tap to Cash feature.
  • You’ll be able to make a payment to another iPhone user by just holding the devices close together, and without giving away any other information.
  • There are other upgrades to Apple Wallet, such as more details on event tickets.

Buried in a slew of announcements at WWDC was a handy new upgrade to Apple Pay. The new Tap to Cash feature lets you transfer money to another Apple Pay user in close proximity without the need to give them any of your details.

To use the new iOS 18 feature, you’ll just have to hold your phone next to the recipient’s device and select the option to send cash. Once confirmed, Apple Cash will charge your account and credit it to that of the friend or family member you’re trying to pay. It’s similar to the AirDrop feature but for money rather than files. This is a utility that Google Wallet is yet to offer.

Apple copies Material You, adds ability to customize home screen and icons to iOS 18

  • iOS 18 will give users the ability to customize their home screen and app icons.
  • Users will be able to place their icons wherever they want on the home screen.
  • The OS update will allow users to customize the color of the icons for their apps.

Apple’s big WWDC event is underway with plenty of software announcements to be made. One announcement of note came near the beginning of the event where the company revealed that users will soon be able to customize their home screens and app icons.

For decades, Apple has restricted what users can do to customize the appearance of their phone’s screens outside of changing the background. The software always had to match the clean lines and simplicity of the hardware. However, the tech giant is giving users a little more freedom to choose how they want their screen to look.

Apple finally brings the option to hide apps on iPhones

Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority
  • iOS 18 will let users lock and hide individual apps on their phones.
  • These apps will require authentication to access even if the phone is unlocked.
  • The hidden apps will not be visible in the app drawer.

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 has kicked off, delivering a slew of exciting announcements, especially regarding the much-anticipated iOS 18. One of the big early announcements was the introduction of a long-requested feature: the ability to lock individual apps on the iPhone.

This new functionality will allow users to lock individual apps, including the built-in Apple apps and third-party apps. A good use case would be when you hand your phone to someone, locked apps will remain secure and locked, even if your phone itself is unlocked.

Apple’s app lock feature differs from Android’s longstanding App Lock mode. Android’s version locks the phone to the current running app, allowing the user to access only that app unless biometrics or a PIN is used to exit. In contrast, Apple’s app lock secures specific apps that you have previously selected.

Messages app brings satellite support to new iPhones on iOS 18, plus new features

  • Apple announced messaging via satellite for the Messages app.
  • Coming to iOS 18, the feature will allow users without service to communicate with others.
  • The feature also supports SMS.

Apple announced several new features for its Messages app on iOS 18, the chief of which is messaging via satellite.

At its WWDC 2024 keynote on Monday, Apple confirmed that users running an iPhone 14 or newer running iOS 18 can send messages over satellite if they’re without cell service or an internet connection. This occurs within the Messages app, making it more convenient and accessible than more cumbersome satellite messaging solutions. Apple also claimed that all messages are end-to-end encrypted.

OnePlus is preparing to launch a new mystery smartwatch soon

OnePlus Watch 2 2
Credit: Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority
  • A new OnePlus Watch model has been listed on India’s BIS certification database.
  • The listing reveals a similar model number and battery capacity to the OnePlus Watch 2.

The OnePlus Watch 2 is one of the best smartwatches currently on the market, and it appears that OnePlus is gearing up for another wearable release.

91Mobiles has spotted a new OnePlus Watch model on India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification site. The model number for this device is OPWWE234, strikingly similar to the OnePlus Watch 2’s OPWWE231. This close resemblance in model numbers suggests that the upcoming device could be very similar to the Watch 2.

Google confirms what version of RCS Apple will support on iPhones

  • Last year, Apple confirmed it would bring RCS support to the Messages app for iOS.
  • However, it didn’t confirm which version of the RCS Universal Profile it would implement.
  • A Business Development Manager at Google says that Apple will support Universal Profile 2.4, which supports business messaging.

To combat the awful green bubble stigma, Google has been pushing Apple to #GetTheMessage, i.e., add support for RCS messaging in the iOS Messages app. In a surprise announcement late last year, Apple confirmed it planned to add support for RCS in the Messages app. RCS in Apple Messages will roll out sometime this year, and Apple confirmed it’ll be based on the RCS Universal Profile standard published by the GSM Association. However, Apple didn’t confirm which version of the RCS Universal Profile it would implement, but thanks to Google, we now know.

Credit: Ryan Whitwam / Android Authority
  • A new leak suggests the Galaxy S24 FE could come with the 50MP ISOCELL GN3 as its primary camera.
  • This is the same primary camera that is present on the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 FE, and Galaxy S24.
  • The Galaxy S24 FE is expected to launch later in the year.

Samsung’s Fan Edition smartphones have their own fan base. The “FE” branding has become popular as an Android flagship alternative, offering a different combination of specifications at a lower price tag. We’re waiting on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, which will hopefully come later in the year, and now the first set of details are leaking out for the device.

Galaxyclub suggests that the Galaxy S24 FE could come with the 50MP ISOCELL GN3 1/1.57-inch sensor for the primary camera, sporting 1.0μm pixels. If the sensor sounds familiar, it is the same one you can spot in the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 FE, and Galaxy S24.

  • There’s a new color for the Series X, new storage variants for both the Series X and Series S, and a discless model.
  • These will launch during the holiday 2024 season, though you’ll likely be able to place a pre-order in the next few months.

While many gamers await the much anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro, Microsoft has introduced a few new options of its own. There isn’t a new Xbox Pro model or anything just yet, but for the first time, we are getting an all-digital Xbox Series X.

The new all-digital version, available in Robot White, offers 1TB of storage and all the speed and performance of the standard Xbox Series X. The new model looks very similar to the regular hardware; the only major difference is the absence of a disc drive. This model will retail for $449.99, which represents a $50 savings over the disc drive version.

  • A leak shows us the iOS 18 compatibility list across iPhone models.
  • It looks like iPhones as old as the iPhone XS will get iOS 18.
  • However, iOS 18’s star features will be AI-based, and they will not be included with the majority of phones.

Today, Apple will finally take the wraps off iOS 18 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This latest version of iOS — the software powering iPhones — promises some big changes. You might be wondering, though, which iPhones will actually get it? Well, we have good news and bad news about that.

Let’s start with the good news. The good news is that very old iPhones will almost certainly get iOS 18. According to a trusted source witnessed by MacRumors, iPhones from as far back as six years ago will still get iOS 18. Check out the complete list below:

  • Renders of the Google Pixel Watch 3 have leaked, showcasing a nearly identical design to its predecessors.
  • The Pixel Watch 3 is said to come with the same 1.2-inch display, camouflaged bezel design, and rotating crown, but a slightly thicker body.
  • There’s speculation that Google could be working on two sizes for the Pixel Watch 3, with the other larger variant supposedly called the Pixel Watch 3 Pro.

The Google Pixel Watch was Google’s first smartwatch under the Pixel branding, and the company followed it up with the Pixel Watch 2. If you place both of these good smartwatches side-by-side, you’d be hard-pressed to find the difference. Google seems to have settled on this design language, as the latest Pixel Watch 3 leak suggests that we will see more twinning.

91Mobiles has shared renders of the upcoming Google Pixel Watch 3, and no matter how you cut it, it looks pretty much like both of its predecessors.

Latest Galaxy Buds 3 leak reveals a potentially divisive redesign

  • A leaked image suggests that Samsung may introduce a stalk design to the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro.
  • This would go against the company’s traditional compact “bud” design.
  • The image also showcases the device’s “blade lights” and silver colorway.

Last month, we reported that Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy Buds may offer a significantly different design than previous generations. Now, a new leaked image lends further credence to this. According to a pixelated leak from reliable tipster Evan Blass (h/t: Asian Geek Squad), the Galaxy Buds 3 may drop its “bud” design in favor of an AirPods-like stalk.

We can’t glean many fine details from the image, but what is apparent is the rumored “blade lights” bar at the foot of the stalk and the silver colorway. Have a look at the render below.

Meet CUKTECH: High-tech power banks at unbeatable prices

Those looking for a great portable battery have a sea of options, which makes it hard to decide what to buy. However, after testing numerous batteries, we can confidently say that it’s hard to beat CUKTECH power banks. CUKTECH’s products offer attractive designs and come at great prices, while still touting industry-leading technologies and features. Let’s introduce you to the company, some of its best products, and tell you exactly what CUKTECH power banks have to offer.

An introduction to CUKTECH and its history

There are many lesser-known portable battery manufacturers on the market, making it challenging to trust the reliability and quality of their products. This is why many consumers will tend to default to big brands like Anker or Mophie, or even first-party manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi. While CUKTECH isn’t as widely known as some of these big brands, the company has a very strong background, making it easier to trust.

Google’s Magic Editor is now available on even more devices

  • Google’s Magic Editor is now more widely available across Android devices, including Samsung devices.
  • This comes after last month’s rollout to older Pixels.
  • The free version of the feature can be found in the latest version of the Google Photos app.

Nearly a year after Google debuted Magic Editor on the Pixel 8 series, the feature is now rolling out to more Android devices.

Per 9to5Google, the free version of the feature is now available to devices beyond the Pixel stable, including Samsung smartphones and tablets. This gives users an alternative to Generative Edit, the Korean firm’s homebrewed AI editor.

Apple blocks PC emulators from all iOS app stores, raising concerns over control

  • Apple’s app review team has rejected a PC emulator because Windows computers technically do not meet the retro game console criteria.
  • Beyond banning it from its own marketplace, Apple has also refused to notarize the PC emulator for third-party app store compatibility.
  • This raises concerns over Apple’s control and how iOS app developers can’t necessarily resort to third-party app stores to circumvent the company’s unforgiving guidelines.

Through a recent iOS update, Apple unlocked third-party app stores in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This has enabled developers to upload apps that don’t necessarily comply with Apple’s strict App Store guidelines to these third-party digital storefronts. Apple, however, still needs to notarize submitted apps to ensure that they pose no risk to iOS or its users. Shockingly, Apple has blocked harmless PC emulator apps from reaching its storefront and won’t notarize them for third-party app store distribution, either.

You can now pay YouTube to test the desktop redesign that you’ll probably hate

YouTube Redesign
  • YouTube Premium users can now test YouTube’s redesigned UI and provide feedback.
  • The experimental redesign moves the title, description, and comments to the right side of the video player and recommended videos to the bottom of the video player.

YouTube is testing a redesign with desktop users, and opinion on it is divided, to put it mildly. The platform is experimenting with putting the title, description, and comments to the right of the video player rather than under it and placing video recommendations at the bottom. If you want to try this redesign out, you can pay to become a YouTube Premium subscriber and get a chance to try the experimental redesign before it goes live for all (if at all it does).

As spotted by 9to5Google, YouTube Premium’s experimental features page now lists the new “Redesigned Watch Page” as one of the features that subscribers can opt into. This redesign on desktop seemingly makes it easier to find related content but also “enhances your ability to engage with comments.”

Samsung might not wait for Unpacked to launch the Galaxy Watch FE

  • Samsung could launch the Galaxy Watch FE before its rumored July 10 Unpacked event.
  • According to a reliable tipster and an early Amazon Italy listing, the watch could debut on June 24.
  • The listing also suggests a €199 price.

Samsung is tipped to launch several new devices on July 10, including new foldables and wearables. However, the company may not wait as long to debut its next budget smartwatch.

According to tipster Arsene Lupin, the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE could debut as early as June 24, not at the rumored July Unpacked event in Paris. This earlier launch date would give it a two-week head start over the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Apple iPhone 16 rumors: Everything we know so far and what we want to see

Update: June 9, 2024 (10:30 AM ET): We have updated our iPhone 16 series rumor hub with alleged images and information related to the battery.

Apple’s iPhone 15 series came out in September 2023. Now that the hype for those has died down, we’re moving on to the 2024 models — and there are already plenty of iPhone 16 rumors and leaks going around.

Apple made some significant changes to the 2023 iPhone lineup, including the addition of USB-C, the mute-switch-replacing Action Button, Titanium bodies instead of Stainless Steel on the Pro iPhones, Dynamic Island on the non-Pro iPhones, a periscope camera for the Pro Max model, and more. If you’ve been following Apple long enough, you’d know that most of these new features from the iPhone 15 series would most certainly be coming to iPhone 16 models. Additionally, what’s exclusive to the 2023 Pros would likely trickle down to the non-Pro variants this year. Keeping all that in mind, here’s what you can expect from the iPhone 16 lineup in 2024.

iOS 18 will continue to crib from Android with app locking system, dark home screen icons

  • A last-minute leak of iOS 18 features suggests we could see an app locking system and dark home screen icons.
  • Notably, the app locking system appears to only work with first-party apps.
  • Both of these features already exist on Android.

Tomorrow, Apple will unveil iOS 18, the next major version of the operating system powering the company’s most important product, the iPhone. We’ve already seen a ton of leaks for this, so we know we should expect many AI-powered features, more customization tools, and redesigns of Control Center and Settings, which haven’t seen refreshes in years.

Today, though, we have two last-minute leaks of iOS 18 information. Thanks to MacRumors in both cases, we hear that a new app locking system and dark home screen icon tool could be announced tomorrow.

My smartwatch doesn’t get me. Could AI make it better?

Despite the commitment I’ve shown to smartwatches, no platform seems to actually get me. I realize this sounds like an angsty teenager, but hear me out. Throughout my review testing and personal use, watch after watch and wearable after wearable have delivered a one-size-fits-all experience with untailored insights and obnoxious notifications.

Sure, some companies lean into machine learning more than others, but no watch has yet to offer the tailored experience I imagine to be possible.

I’d given up, but the Snapdragon X launch may have saved Windows on Arm

Opinion post by
Robert Triggs

If you’ve tuned into Computex this week, the headline act has been the debut of numerous Windows on Arm laptops powered by Qualcomm’s long-awaited Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus platforms. You might not think it based on the launch hype, but this exclusive collaboration between Microsoft and Qualcomm to bring Arm energy efficiency to Windows is actually entering its seventh year. Finally, the long-touted (if not a tad overblown) benefits of leaving x86 behind seem to have arrived.

I’ve dipped my toes into the Arm project on a couple of occasions. First with 2018’s Lenovo Mixx 630 powered by 2017’s flagship smartphone-class Snapdragon 835 processor. Performance was pretty poor for laptop use cases, with sluggish multi-tasking and poor emulation of non-Arm-based applications. The ecosystem of native Arm apps was absolutely rubbish back then, severely limiting the platform’s appeal. I still have this little 2-in-1 around, but it’s such a slog to use that it’s sat collecting dust. Still, those were the early days, and Windows on Arm would eventually improve.

iPhone 16 battery leak suggests Apple has overheating issues under control

  • The iPhone 16 battery has apparently leaked.
  • The battery has a metal casing instead of the traditional foil, which might assist in dissipating heat.
  • At 3,597mAh, it also has slightly more capacity than the iPhone 15’s battery.

When the iPhone 15 series launched, there were a lot of complaints from buyers about excessive heat. Apple, of course, downplayed the problem but eventually said it would improve thermals through software updates. However, there are still plenty of complaints online from people who feel their iPhone 15 gets a little too toasty.

Thankfully, it appears Apple has taken this problem seriously and is determined not to have a repeat with the iPhone 16 series, due to land this fall. According to a new leak from Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter), we see what could possibly be the iPhone 16 battery.

You can now take a drive on Samsung Highway in Texas

  • There is now a roadway in Texas officially named Samsung Highway.
  • The highway was partially paid for by Samsung to better connect its Texas manufacturing plants to the surrounding populace.
  • Samsung and Texas Governor Greg Abbott had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, June 7.

Samsung might be a South Korean company, but it has manufacturing facilities, office buildings, and more infrastructure all over the world. One place where it has developed a sizable presence is Texas. In the Lone Star State, Samsung has invested over $40 billion in creating a manufacturing plant — the largest-ever foreign investment in Texas’ history.

On June 7, Samsung, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officially opened “Samsung Highway,” a stretch of road that connects the manufacturing buildings with the surrounding areas (h/t SamMobile). This will better allow employees, contractors, and officials to get to and from Samsung’s buildings daily.

Every new iOS 18 AI feature for the new Siri just leaked

  • A new leak exposes most (if not all) of the new AI-powered Siri features we expect to see at WWDC 2024.
  • Siri is becoming more powerful and better at performing complex tasks through natural language.
  • It is unclear if all these features will go live simultaneously or be a staggered rollout.

We’ve heard plenty of rumors about Apple’s alleged plans to super-power its digital assistant Siri at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Today, via Apple Insider, we have the most comprehensive leak yet. Sourced from “people familiar with Apple’s AI initiative,” the leak contains pretty much everything Siri will be able to do across over a dozen first-party iPhone apps.

The full leak is worth a look, especially if you’re an iPhone user. However, we’ll give you the general gist of Apple’s goals with the “new” Siri and share some highlights that we think will most affect iPhone users’ day-to-day lives.

App of the Week: Inflow app helped me get my runaway ADHD symptoms back in check

I’ve written a bit in the past about my struggles with ADHD and how devices like Bluetooth keyfinders can be helpful for someone like me. A few months ago, my struggles intensified when I had to temporarily go off medication due to stomach issues. At the time, I was completely overwhelmed with the idea of going off the meds while I healed. After sliding back into some truly bad habits, I started looking for alternatives that could help keep some of my worst ADHD symptoms in check, and thankfully, that’s when I discovered Inflow.

We have details on the new Instant Hotspot feature for Android thanks to live support page

  • The new Android Instant Hotspot feature is not out yet, but its support page is live.
  • The page tells us that Android Go devices won’t work, and some devices will get more features than others.
  • We still don’t have a concrete timeline for the rollout of Instant Hotspot.

At the end of May, in an Android Feature Drop, Google announced a new tool called Instant Hotspot. The company described it as a way to instantly connect to a different device’s internet connection through one notification tap. This is possible thanks to the new cross-device services feature coming to Android soon.

Unfortunately, that’s about all we knew about Instant Hotspot — until now. At some point in the past 24 hours or so, Google published the official support page for Instant Hotspot, which gives a lot more details about the feature.

With Fossil’s exit, my wardrobe’s at war with tacky smartwatches

Whether I’m two weeks into a 30-day training push or two days into a lazy holiday week, I’m rarely found without a smartwatch on my wrist. In fact, the tan line on my left arm is stark, and at this point, it’s in my best interest to strap on a device. And yet, on the rare occasions when I leave the house especially dressed up (i.e., a friend’s wedding), I almost always leave my watch behind. Why? Most fitness-tracking smartwatches scream “step counting in progress” rather than blend into formal wear like their traditional counterparts.

Windows is at a crossroads, Microsoft has to decide if it wants to be more like Apple or Android

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taVznf-giBk

Microsoft’s Windows has just arrived at a crossroads. The status quo is being challenged by a mainstream move into the Arm architecture and a heavy push for AI as a major feature of Microsoft’s software ecosystem. But while these Copilot Plus laptop features sound exciting, our admittedly short hands-on with Recall suggests many are only skin deep. What Windows really needs to maximize the potential of this pivotal shift is a more substantial software refresh. Yes, those control panel/settings duplications are already well documented (and should be fixed); what I’m talking about is a more fundamental revamp of the core focus of the Windows OS. About the level of what Microsoft wanted to do with Windows 8, only much better and suited to next-gen devices that consumers actually want.

The problem is that such a move could fundamentally shift Windows to a more walled-garden Apple-style approach rather than the (mostly) Android-esque openness that has fostered a platform diverse enough to cater to both gamers and professionals at once. I’m not even sure it’s something I really want, but sitting on the fence isn’t going to move the platform forward.

UWB is still under-utilized on Android, but there’s a bit of hope

Opinion post by
Rita El Khoury

It’s been nearly four years since Samsung shipped the first Android phone with an ultra-wideband chip — or UWB for short. Since then, Samsung has included UWB in eight other phone series, including flagships from the Galaxy S21, S22, S23, and S24 line-up, as well as the Z Fold 2, 3, 4, and 5. Google has also followed suit with the Pro models of its Pixel 6, 7, and 8, plus the Fold and Tablet.

Yet, here we are, with basically nothing to show for the tech. UWB enables secure keyless entry in some high-end cars and is also used by Samsung to better locate a lost Galaxy SmartTag 2 near you. That’s everything you can use UWB for right now. The chip is also supposed to power the quick music casting from your Pixel phone to your Pixel Tablet, but that feature hasn’t yet rolled out despite being teased for months.

Samsung Unpacked leak may have spoiled everything planned for the event

  • A new leak has provided images of devices expected to be announced at Unpacked next month.
  • The images are scrambled but just clear enough to make out what devices are likely in them.
  • If correct, Samsung will announce its next foldables, the Galaxy Ring, and Galaxy Watch 7.

We’re only about a month out from Samsung’s next Unpacked event, yet there have been more than enough leaks to start making some predictions. For example, we could see the company’s new foldables, smart ring, and more. A new leak, however, may narrow down what we should expect to see in July.

Trustworthy leaker Evan Blass has released a collection of images that are meant to reveal the announcements Samsung plans to make at Unpacked. The images in question are scrambled, but they’re just clear enough to make out what devices are contained in the renders.

Samsung to enhance Galaxy S24’s Instant Slo-Mo feature with HDR10+ support

  • Samsung’s Instant Slo-Mo feature will soon get support for HDR10+.
  • It’s unclear if support will arrive with the next regular software update or the next OS update.
  • Samsung to enhance Galaxy S24’s Instant Slo-Mo feature with HDR10+ support

Samsung introduced Instant Slo-Mo to the Galaxy S24 as one of its many generative AI features. It allows you to instantly slow down any video you’re watching from the gallery by pressing and holding down on the video. Now this feature is about to get support for HDR10+.

Instant Slo-Mo works by using generative AI to create new frames in a video, which are then inserted between the real frames. The result is an artificially extended video with a slow-motion effect applied.

Apple to debut ‘Apple Intelligence’ at WWDC and here are the features it powers

  • About half of Apple’s WWDC’s keynote presentation is expected to cover AI features.
  • The company will debut its new AI system called “Apple Intelligence” at the event.
  • Users will need to opt-in to use the firm’s AI features.

Although Apple joined the AI race late, it has been working on a bevy of AI features for its products. At WWDC, it’s expected we’ll finally see the fruits of the company’s labor. A new report says about half of next week’s presentation will focus on AI and it will center around the tech giant’s new AI system.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has laid out everything Apple plans to announce during its WWDC event on June 10. At the event, the Cupertino-based firm will reportedly unveil its new AI system, which it has dubbed “Apple Intelligence.” It will be available for the iPhone 15 Pro and for the iPhones coming out this year, as well as for iPads and Macs with at least an M1 chip. The AI will arrive in the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Microsoft finally responds to Recall backlash, will make several changes

A close-up image of Microsoft's Recall feature.
Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority
  • After weeks of public outcry over the upcoming Microsoft Windows Recall feature, Microsoft has finally announced changes in response.
  • The company will make it clearer during the initial setup that you can opt out and will also incorporate Windows Hello for added security.
  • These changes will roll out before June 18, when the public will first have access to Recall-enabled systems.

For the past few weeks, the tech world has been discussing a controversial new Windows feature called Recall. This feature — which is not out yet but has been previewed by the press and select researchers — takes a snapshot of your Windows system every few seconds. These screenshots can then be searched using AI so you can copy text, download images, or simply look at what you were doing at a specific time so you can recreate that particular situation.

Now, due to public backlash to what appears to be an invasive and insecure product, Microsoft has announced a response to this controversy. In a lengthy blog post, the company lays out three core changes it is making to Recall:

Upgrade to the Amazon Eero Max 7 router at $90 off

A new router isn’t the most glamorous purchase, but it’s up there with some of the best money you might spend on your home. Other fancy gadgets are all well and good, but chances are you use your home internet almost constantly, so it’s worth investing well. The Amazon Eero Max 7 Mesh Wi-Fi router is a fantastic option, and you can slash 15% off the normal $600 retail price right now.

Amazon Eero Max 7 Mesh Wi-Fi Router for $509.99 ($90 off)

Samsung’s weird Watch Ultra design could be a positive compromise

Samsung’s next product launch is just around the corner, and we’re expecting a new range-topping smartwatch to join the fray. Renders of the Galaxy Watch “Ultra” broke cover recently, offering a glimpse of a smartwatch that looks nothing like what Samsung’s offered before. It boasts a divergent design with a more imposing “Ultra” aesthetic. While I’m a big fan of the leaked design, not everyone is sold on it.

Sure, it’s a surprising development, considering the mounting hype for the return of a square Samsung watch to rival the Apple Watch Ultra directly. However, I argue that the squared-circle combo, albeit questionable to some, offers more potential than square or circular designs alone.

Qualcomm is serious about Windows on Arm; second wave of launches planned for 2024

Microsoft Windows Logo
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority
  • Qualcomm has hinted at a second wave of Arm-powered PC launches in the coming months.
  • While we’ve already seen several releases so far, the next wave will target the business and enterprise market.
  • The wave could see the launch of non-laptop form factors like mini-PCs and all-in-one desktop computers.

Windows on Arm has been around for over half a decade at this point, but we’ve only seen a handful of devices launch in that time. However, this year is increasingly looking like an inflection point. Over the past few days at Computex 2024, we saw Qualcomm and Microsoft join hands with hardware partners like Dell and Asus to launch a flurry of new Snapdragon X-powered PCs. While that’s already a significant uptick over previous years, the industry may have even more in store for the remainder of 2024.

According to WinFuture, Microsoft and Qualcomm are busy gearing up for a significant expansion in the Windows on Arm device portfolio. A Qualcomm representative has suggested that OEMs are planning a second wave of launches for August and September of this year. Like the Surface Pro 11 and other devices announced so far, these upcoming PCs will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus SoCs.

While Samsung has made many great smartwatches in recent history, it’s been three years since Samsung launched a dedicated fitness tracker. Recently, a flurry of rumors suggested this was about to change, and now it’s official. The Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 is here and here’s everything we know about it.

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 release date, price, and availability

  • Samsung Galaxy Fit — February 20, 2019
  • Samsung  Galaxy Fit 2 — September 3, 2020

The Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 officially launched on February 23, though only in select markets. It’s not officially available in the US yet, though you can get the international model online if you don’t mind potentially losing out on warranty benefits.

Spotify playlists have vanished for many users (Update: Bug fixed)

  • Many Spotify users are complaining that their playlists have vanished. They also cannot see any playlists on their friends’ profiles.
  • Spotify acknowledged the bug, and rolled out fixes shortly after publishing of this article.

Despite the recent price rises and the lack of lossless audio music, Spotify still remains the primary music streaming app for many users. Spotify’s excellent cross-device functionality is one of the reasons why many people, including myself, prefer it over YouTube Music. But if you recently opened Spotify and found all of your playlists have vanished, don’t panic, as that’s definitely a bug and not a feature.

We’re seeing multiple reports from users complaining that their playlists have vanished. These reports are generally from desktop and web browser users.

Netflix is redesigning its most important app, here’s what to expect

  • Netflix has published mock-ups of its redesigned TV interface.
  • The redesign primarily reworks the menu and navigation system and how title tiles display information.
  • Netflix has rolled out the redesign to limited testers, but it’s unclear if and when it’ll reach all users.

Netflix is testing a new TV interface that it hopes will provide more information to content hunters and simplify the browsing experience for all. The company published several mockups of the new home page and other elements that may form the base of the streaming platform’s new redesign (h/t: The Verge).

The changes represent the app’s biggest UI shift in years, but the general Netflix aesthetic remains.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is worse than the 6 Gen 1

Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3
  • Qualcomm has quietly launched the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 SoC in 4G and 5G variants.
  • The 6s Gen 3 is similar to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, which is, in turn, similar to the Snapdragon 695 SoC.
  • Based on the specifications, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 sits below the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1.

Qualcomm made the leap to a “simplified” naming scheme with the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in 2021, promising an SoC lineup that would be easier for consumers to understand. We’re now deep in 2024, and Qualcomm’s naming scheme is in a really bad spot. Qualcomm has released plenty of confusing SoC versions following no discernible hierarchy, making it challenging to rank phones at a glance. The company has quietly launched the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, which appears to be a slightly better version of the Snapdragon 695 from 2021 but seemingly much worse than the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 from 2022.

The Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 has the model number SM6375-AC, which puts it closer to the Snapdragon 695 (SM6375) than to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 (SM6450). When you go through the specifications of the 6s Gen 3, you’d be hard-pressed to find any real differences between it and the Snapdragon 695 other than a tiny increase in clock speeds.

Favorites first: WhatsApp will soon rank your contacts’ status updates

  • WhatsApp is rolling out a change to how it displays status updates.
  • The app is testing a new ranking system that will more likely display status updates from your more popular contacts.
  • The change is currently available in the latest WhatsApp beta version.

Plenty of work has been put into improving WhatsApp Status in recent months, from extending the video limit to bolstering its privacy. Now, the chat app is set to improve how these updates are displayed, rearranging them through a new ranking system.

Per WABetaInfo, status updates will soon be displayed based on contacts’ popularity and perceived importance. More specifically, you’ll be more likely to see status updates from those you speak to often and have spoken to recently, those who are pinned, and status updates soon to expire. WhatsApp will then order your status tray based on these criteria. Notably, this change seems to go hand-in-hand with WhatsApp’s larger redesign, showcased in May.

Sony ditches 8K branding from PlayStation 5 boxes amidst PS5 Pro rumors

  • Sony has quietly removed the 8K branding from PS5 boxes, now highlighting only 4K/120 fps and HDR capabilities.
  • The timing of this change is unclear, but it may be in preparation for the rumored PS5 Pro.

In a curious development, the 8K branding has gone missing from the PlayStation 5’s packaging. Initially spotted by John Linneman, the updated PS5 packaging now only highlights 4K/120 fps and HDR capabilities, omitting any mention of 8K output.

The exact timing of this packaging update remains uncertain. Notably, when Sony released the PS5 Slim model last November, the boxes still featured the 8K branding. A quick look around online reveals that most PS5 Slim ( ) listings now reflect the new packaging, although I could still find older 8K-labeled boxes on Best Buy. Interestingly, none of the boxes displayed on Sony’s PlayStation Direct store mention 8K anymore.

Apple takes aim at third-party password managers with Passwords app

  • Apple plans to debut a new app called Passwords at WWDC.
  • The new app is a password manager that can also support verification codes and serve as an authentication app.
  • Passwords will come as a part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.

Next week, Apple will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Apple is expected to use this year’s event to showcase all the AI projects it has been working on. Along with its AI announcements, we could also get an announcement for a new app for managing passwords.

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to unveil an app called Passwords on June 10 at WWDC. This app can generate and keep track of passwords, support verification codes, and act as an authentication app just like Google Authenticator.

Snapdragon X laptops might be the only Copilot Plus machines for a while

AMD's Lisa Su at Computex.
Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority
  • Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PC program has a list of requirements for eligibility.
  • Although upcoming Intel and AMD laptops will meet those criteria, it doesn’t appear those machines will actually have Copilot Plus approval.
  • It’s possible that Snapdragon X-based laptops will be the only Copilot Plus machines to be launched in 2024.

In May, Microsoft took the wraps off a new program called Copilot Plus PC. This is a new identifier for laptops that meet certain criteria that allow them to support special on-device AI features. Among these criteria are a minimum of 16GB of RAM, 256GB of onboard storage, and a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

Out of the gate, Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop (7th-gen) and Surface Pro (11th-gen) will be Copilot Plus PCs. These machines run on the Snapdragon X Elite processor, a new Windows on Arm SoC designed to be powerful, battery-efficient, and AI-first. Along with the two Surface machines, there are many more laptops running Qualcomm silicon from half a dozen other OEMs.

  • This means Best Buy will no longer have access to genuine parts, tools, or training for Samsung phone repairs.

Samsung phone owners might be disappointed to learn that the company’s repair partnership with Best Buy has come to an end. This change ends Best Buy’s status as an authorized service provider (ASP) for Samsung, meaning they can’t use genuine Samsung parts, tools, or training anymore.

The news initially surfaced on a Geek Squad subreddit, where employees discussed the discontinuation of the program. The Verge then confirmed the news with a Best Buy insider who shared an internal memo announcing the end of the Samsung ASP program at all locations.

  • Previously, Google had language in its service and repair terms and conditions that said if you sent in a device with non-OEM parts, it would not return the device.
  • That language has now been changed to clarify that Google will return your device unless there are health or safety requirements that prevent it from doing so.
  • The company denies that it ever actually kept devices.

Just yesterday, Google’s service and repair ToS contained wording that said it would not return your device if it found non-OEM parts in the Android phone you sent in for repair. The firm has now changed its terms and conditions to reflect that it won’t steal your phone.

Earlier this week, Google landed in hot water after it was discovered that the company could keep your phone if you sent it in for repair with non-OEM parts. After pointing out the language, a Google spokesperson reached out to Android Authority to clarify that it doesn’t keep Pixel phones, regardless of whether they have non-OEM parts or not. The company also said it would be updating its terms and conditions.

  • Soon, WhatsApp will ask certain users to fill in their birth year in order to continue using the app.
  • Your birth year will not be shown in the app.
  • Instead, it appears this prompt is in response to certain US states having age verification laws.

Recently, certain states in the US have passed age verification laws. Intended to curb children’s access to pornographic materials as well as protect children from accessing sites without their parents’ permission, the laws are popping up at a fast pace in mostly Republican states across the nation. There are also bills in various stages of development in other states.

Now, it looks like Meta is getting WhatsApp ready to comply with these laws. According to WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (v.2.24.12.25) includes code that presents certain users with a prompt asking for birth year information. The prompt warns you that you cannot change the information later and that you are required to provide it to continue using WhatsApp.

  • Qualcomm is considering manufacturing its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip with both TSMC and Samsung.
  • CEO Cristiano Amon hinted at this potential dual-sourcing strategy during a media briefing in Taiwan.

Qualcomm might be shaking things up with its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, teaming up with both Samsung and TSMC to manufacture it. This tidbit came from Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon during a media briefing in Taiwan on June 4, as reported by Business Korea.

During the briefing, Amon responded to a question about the risks of relying on a single manufacturer by suggesting of a partnership with both Samsung and TSMC for future chip fabrication. He did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind this shift, but it’s likely driven by a combination of factors, including cost considerations, the desire to diversify manufacturing partners, and confidence in Samsung’s recent advancements in chip manufacturing.
