Is this a water fountain or a torture device? Thanks, Sodastream!

sodastream airport

Imagine rushing through Philadelphia Airport, parched and desperate for water, only to find that your only salvation is a water fountain that forces you to watch Sodastream ads in exchange for a sip of water.

Welcome to 2024, where even your hydration comes with a side of corporate greed. — Read the rest

Internet Archive forced to remove half a million books

internet archive books

Last year, publishers Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and Wiley sued the Internet Archive for copyright infringement. The publishers alleged that Internet Archive's Open Library project had no right to digitally lend the 127 books named in the suit. Judge John Koeltl ruled in the publisher's favor. — Read the rest

Shocker: MAGA man actually changes his mind at a Trump rally (video)

An astonishing discovery was made over the weekend at a Trump rally: the Kool-Aid doesn't always take.

At least this was the case with one "America first" Republican, who initially sided with Russia's Vladimir Putin, but actually listened to reason when journalist Adam Mockler explained why the United States is better off supporting Ukraine. — Read the rest

Uglydesign showcases amazingly hideous design choices

Od: Popkin
An ugly christmas sweater

Uglydesign is a deeply entertaining instagram page that showcases amazingly hideous design choices, both intentional and unintentional.

My favorites include these camo pants with a cartoon butt window on the back, This winter vest and undershirt that include custom holes to showcase the wearer's tattoo, and this early apple computer that has been transformed into a mailbox. — Read the rest

Alex Trebek honored with U.S. stamp

My 89-year-old mom and I have a nightly tradition of watching Jeopardy together. When Ken Jennings announced on Friday's episode that Alex Trebek would be honored with a US postage stamp, we both got a little teary-eyed. While we both agree that Ken is doing an excellent job, there's no replacing Alex Trebek, no matter how carefully they pronounce "genre." — Read the rest

NASA's troubled Starliner spacecraft arrived at the International Space Station on June 5th, after two previous attempts were scrubbed due to issues with the launch system and thrusters. Driver fined $387 after traffic cameras shoot her holding phone—or a sunglasses case

Australia, freshly infested with high-definition traffic cameras, is issuing substantial fines to drivers filmed using phones—or holding anything that looks like one, such as a sunglasses case. A woman in Syndey was upset to learn that proving she owns a case consistent with the image is immaterial to the enforcing agency—whose name, "Revenue", seems to offer a clue about the priorities at hand. — Read the rest

Real-life Spider-Girl's talent allows her to watch TV from the ceiling

If I walked into the living room at night and saw my kid sitting on the ceiling, my first thought would be to call an exorcist.

Believe it or not, there is a mom who catches her daughter hanging out on the ceiling regularly, but the reason is far from a horror movie: the kid simply likes watching cartoons from up there. — Read the rest

Get a look back at 1950's San Francisco

San Fransico. Photo: oneinchpunch / Shutterstock

For a fun look back at 1950's San Francisco watch the film noir classic '"The Lineup." It was a 1958 movie based on the TV series of the same name. "Too hot…too big…for TV!"

What the mostly daytime, sunny-skies crime flick lacks in true "film noir" visuals, is made made up by being a real time capsule. — Read the rest

Why bells used to be attached to 19th century coffins

Od: Popkin

Coffins were sometimes found with unsettling scratch marks lining the inside. By the 19th century, a more scientific approach to such problems led to the realization that those declared dead were sometimes just still alive. And ingenious engineering solutions were devised: the safety coffins. — Read the rest

Louisiana's new "Ten Commandments" law actually contains eleven commandments

ten commandments

There is absolutely nothing funny about the new law that Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry just signed (as a child fainted behind him) that requires all public classrooms to display a poster of the Ten Commandments.

The beginning text of Louisiana State Legislature House Bill 71, which is set to go into effect in early 2025, reads:

AN ACT To enact R.S.

Just one day after media reported that a Phoenix-area woman was trapped in her Tesla when the car's battery died, a follow-up story reveals a similar incident with a toddler in the disabled vehicle: the 20-month-old granddaughter of Renee Sanchez.

Sanchez had strapped her granddaughter into her car seat to take her on a trip to the Phoenix Zoo, and before Sanchez could get into the car herself, the car's battery died and all of the doors locked. — Read the rest

Back in February 2024, the BBC reported that the United Kingdom had rejected resettlement applications for Afghan commandos who fought alongside British soldiers in the fight against the Taliban. From that original report:

When the Taliban swept to power in August 2021, members of Afghan Special Forces units CF 333 and ATF 444 – known as the "Triples" – were among the groups most at risk of reprisal, having supported UK Special Forces in their fight against the Taliban.
