After being announced earlier this week, Gameloft has today released the latest free update for Disney Dreamlight Valley, welcoming The Princess and the Frog's Tiana into the slice-of-life action.
The 'Dapper Delights' update adds new content for those with the base game and those with the expansion pass, so whichever version you play, there are some fresh features to check out.
Following the release of Gothic Classic and Gothic II Classic on the Nintendo Switch, it looks like the third entry in the fantasy-themed open-world RPG series is also coming to the Nintendo Switch in the future.
A new (and now removed) rating for Gothic 3 Classic has been spotted on the ESRB. Below is a look, courtesy of Gematsu. It will be rated 'T' for teen and contains "blood and gore, language, mild suggestive themes, use of drugs and violence".
She also played Chun-Li and Major from Ghost in the Shell.
There's some incredibly sad news coming out of Japan this week about the passing of Atsuko Tanaka - the voice actor behind many major video game and anime roles. This was revealed by her son Hikaru Tanaka on social media - with Oricon News noting how she died on 20th August 2024 at 61 years of age.
Some of her most notable roles included the voice of Bayonetta in the Japanese version of the game, Chun-Li from the Street Fighter series, Lara Croft and Motoko "The Major" Kusanagi - the protagonist of the famous anime series Ghost in the Shell. In addition to this, she played characters from games and anime like NieR Replicant (Kaine), Devil May Cry (Trish) and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Lisa Lisa).
The first three games are available now on Switch.
Well, the Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford wasn't joking around when he recently teased Borderlands 4. At Gamescom Opening Night Live this year, it was revealed the fourth entry would arrive in 2025 on multiple platforms.
Although there's no mention of a Nintendo release, it seems like there's a good chance of one in the future, with the Switch "successor" announcement scheduled to take place at some point "this fiscal year". The original Borderlands trilogy (and even some spin-offs) have also been made available on the Switch during its lifecycle.
Some fans think it could come to Nintendo's "successor" system.
Genshin Impact fans waiting for the game to arrive on the Switch have voiced their feelings and thoughts online today after the game was announced for another platform at Gamescom Opening Night Live.
This open-world action RPG adventure is now on its way to the Xbox this November, and yet there are still no updates about the Nintendo version, which was originally confirmed in 2020 - with a trailer at the time noting how it was "coming soon" to the hybrid platform.
Update: Nintendo has released two new amiibo trailers.
Update #2 :
Following last month's reveal of new Splatoon 3 amiibo, Nintendo has now released two new trailers in Japan, giving fans a sneak peek of these figures in-game. You can take a look in the trailers below. Once again, they'll be launching locally next month on 5th September 2024.
Gamescom: Opening Night Live 2024 has been and gone, and it was a pretty eventful show... if you have multiple consoles!
We knew going in things would be light for the Nintendo Switch — it's in its eighth year, after all! But Nintendo is also skipping the event. Zelda is coming soon folks, don't worry...
We were more than a bit surprised when Sid Meier's Civilization VII was confirmed to be coming to Switch at Summer Game Fest 2024. And at Gamescom, we found out when we can expect to play the game on all consoles — 11th February 2025.
Debuting alongside the release date was the first-look at the gameplay, nd it looks absolutely stunning. Of course, we don't have Switch footage yet — and we're sort of staggered that they'll be able to squeeze the game onto the console — but hopefully it'll look nice on the hybrid console. Well, we'll find out early next year.
It's safe to say that King of Meat has sprung out of nowhere. Developed by Guildford-based studio Glowmade and published by Amazon Games, it was one of the genuinely new announcements in Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, and you may be wondering what exactly it has in store.
We were in the same boat when we were invited by the publisher to a preview event earlier this month. But, after watching the trailer, hearing from the developer, and getting to go hands-on for roughly two hours, we're starting to build up a pretty good picture of what it's all about.
Dave The Diver just cannot stop, can he? Now he's teaming up with three more properties via crossover content, and all of them are arriving in October 2024.
This time around, Dave will be teaming up with American singer-songwriter mxmtoon, 2024 smash hit Balatro, and the medieval-style simulation Potion Craft. It's unclear whether the crossover content will be free or paid DLC.
SEGA is back with another (another) new look at Sonic X Shadow Generations, the focus this time being on Shadow's fresh Doom Powers.
These are the abilities that the edgy hedgehog will be relying on to take down hoards of foes across each stage. We had already spotted some of these in action in previous trailers, but today's drop is our first proper look at what the full range of Doom Powers has in store.
We know — Gamescom hasn't even started yet and we're already looking ahead to the next gaming convention, PAX West 2024. With Nintendo in attendance, fans have been looking forward to seeing what the Big N is bringing to the show.
And now, Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Super Mario Party Jamboree will be playable at the show in Seattle. This will be the first playable public demo for both of these games, which were announced at the June 2024 Nintendo Direct.
Expanding upon its officially licensed Nintendo range, Sandisk's new lineup includes three new designs in total – a 256GB Pikachu card, a 512GB Gengar card, and a huge 1TB Snorlax card that'll eradicate your Switch's storage woes for good.
A little while back, we reported on a 'Lego Ideas' set featuring a recreation of the classic Donkey Kong game starring the titular villain alongside Pauline.
Well, the set - courtesy of user 'By If You Build It' - has now surpassed 10,000 supporters and has qualified for an official review from Lego itself. The reviewing process will begin in September and Lego has stated that it may take several months to complete.
We've been waiting for news of Tintin Reporter: Cigars of the Pharaoh on Switch for a while now (ever since it was first teased back in 2022, to be precise), but it looks like we won't have to wait too much longer. Publishers Tintinimaginatio and Microids have finally revealed that the detective's latest adventure will be flying over to Switch on 17th October 2024.
The game launched on PlayStation and Xbox last year in a pretty sorry state (one that developer Pendulo Studios apologised for on release day), though the announcement of the Switch release comes with a glimmer of hope.
It's the middle of August, which means it's time for another glimpse at the future of video games with the upcoming Gamescom 2024.
As always, the festivities will kick off with the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase in Cologne, Germany, during which regular host Geoff Keighley will reveal new trailers and information for some of the biggest games hitting shelves in the foreseeable future.
In the words of Capcom, this is Marvel and Capcom's "third game effort" - featuring characters like Mega Man, Spider-Man, Venom, and various other all-star heroes and characters. Battles are described as being more intense than ever before in this epic clash. You'll also be able to hone your skills in the training mode, and view & listen to materials in the museum.
Everything on show during Nintendo's 'Museum Direct'.
The Nintendo Museum is finally opening this year and now that Nintendo has given us a preview in the latest Direct broadcast, we've put together this gallery capturing its retro history.
As previously revealed, the museum is built on the site of Nintendo's original factory (the Nintendo Uji Ogura Plant) where it made Hanafuda and playing cards. Quality checks also happened at this location during the Famicom era.
As an M-rated game being published by Nintendo, there's certainly been a lot more interest in Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club in the lead-up to its release than there might have been with a more...well, Nintendo-esque content rating attached.
Whether it deserves the full-blown adult treatment, we've yet to discern as we've only had time with the prologue and first chapter so far, which you too should have access to at the time of writing via the multipart demo hitting the Switch eShop. But what we can say, is that this is an intriguingly dark game from the get-go whilst still remaining something that long-time fans of the Famicom Detective Club series should feel right at home playing.
The Nintendo Museum is opening in Kyoto, Japan this year. Nintendo has now sent ticket reservations live and also provides all sorts of helpful information on the official museum website. Here's a quick rundown about some things you might want to know before you visit the museum.
"A free Nintendo Account is required to make a reservation".
Well, we've just had our first proper look at the Nintendo Museum, courtesy of Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and at the very end of the broadcast, an opening date was confirmed.
The official launch for this new museum located in Kyoto, Japan will take place this year on 2nd October 2024:
Who remembered that Gamescom gives out awards? Yep. At the end of every event, the show hands out awards to all eligible games that are present at the Cologne-based expo. One of these categories is the 'Best Nintendo Game', which has been around since 2012. However, the award won't be handed out this year as the organisers have scrapped the award for 2024.
TheGamer, who reported on the story, reached out to Gamescom's organisers about the decision to scrap the award, and their response revealed that there were "too few submissions" for the category. Here's the brief statement in full:
"We've made adjustments to improve the overall gameplay experience".
Some of you may have seen earlier this week that BAKERU, the previously Japan-only 3D action platformer from Good-Feel, was announced to be coming to Western shores for a fresh English release in just a few short weeks.
Limited Run games is collaborating with Sega to release a very special collector's edition of the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations on Switch.
Arriving at some point in 2025 and retailing for an eye-watering $249.99, the package nevertheless comes with some pretty cool extras. At the top of the pile is a gorgeous statue featuring both Sonic and Shadow standing atop a Sega Dreamcast. Makes sense since the original Sonic Generations was a Dreamcast ga... oh, wait.
After an initial announcement back in 2020, Bandai Namco has fully revealed Fate/Extra Record, a full remake of the 2010 PSP title Fate/Extra.
Slated for 2025 on Nintendo Switch, Fate/Extra Record is currently only confirmed for Japan, but Bandai Namco's involvement in the Type-Moon-developed dungeon crawler makes a Western release fairly likely. The remake will boast overhauled visuals and a new combat system, both of which can be glimpsed in the new trailer alongside the usual visual novel mechanics and explorative segments.
When he's not making games or recording videos about game design, Masahiro Sakurai likes to entertain himself in all sorts of ways.
In his latest post on social media, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director revealed a LEGO set he received for his 54th birthday earlier this week. It's not just any old Lego set, either - it's the Lego NES! In a follow up post, he chose to highlight the secret underground level hidden inside this build.
In case you did miss it, it's going to come packed with all sorts of new (and familiar) characters and locations, along with some interesting new mechanics for Zelda (such as the ability 'Bind' objects and enemies). It was also confirmed Zelda will be able to travel around the land of Hyrule on a horse!
It seems Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will now be returning sooner rather than later, with Dragami Games announcing the game is launching in North America, Europe and other regions on 12th September 2024 (instead of the 26th September 2024) for $44.99 USD.
Returning to the top of the charts a year after its release.
When the Switch arrived on the scene in 2017, one of the launch titles included 1-2-Switch - a multiplayer party game utilising the many features of the Joy-Con controllers. Somehow, this title got a sequel in 2023 called Everybody 1-2-Switch and while it dropped out of sight pretty quickly, it has now made a surprising comeback.
As highlighted by Vooks.net, more than a year after its release, the sequel has returned to the top spot in Australia as the best-selling video game. Yes, between 22nd - 28th July 2024, it managed to beat heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto V and outperformed sports titles like NBA 2K24 and EA Sports College Football 25.
Are you a Deep Cut, Off The Hook, or Squid Sisters fan?
Debates over the best Splatoon idol group are dime-a-dozen but never have the stakes been higher than in Splatoon 3's upcoming second anniversary celebration: Grand Festival.
Starting on September 13th and ending on 16th of the same month (or 12th to 15th, depending on your region), this three-day event is not only a Splatfest that pits each group's fans against one another but it's also a music festival where the pop stars don fresh ‘fits to perform on stages both big and small.
Red Candle Games is best known for cult horror hits Detention and Devotion, both of which are absolutely excellent and well worth picking up. But the studio's newest game is something completely different from the team, and while the game is currently exclusive to PC, a new rating suggests that it will be coming to Nintendo Switch.
Spotted by Gematsu, Nine Sols has been rated for all consoles including Switch in Taiwan. The game is a blend of Hollow Knight and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a potent combo that combines beautiful 2D platforming and combat that focuses heavy on parrying and breaking enemy guard.
The upcoming Shadow of the Ninja - Reborn, a remake of the NES side-scrolling action game Shadow of the Ninja, launches at the end of the month. But if you're not sure whether you want to pick up this reimagined classic, then ININ Games has confirmed that a demo will be coming to Switch "soon".
The demo is out now on Xbox Series X|S platforms, so you can check it out there if you have Microsoft's home console. But if you're waiting to try out the handheld experience on Nintendo's console, well, you'll just have to wait for the drop.
If you're a long-time Zelda fan, then seeing Hyrule again probably isn't anything new, but this is the first time we've got a good look at the map and the world in the upcoming Zelda game.
Since the release of Volgar the Viking in 2013, fans have been itching for a full sequel to the Rastan-inspired action platformer for over a decade at this point. Now the time has finally arrived. Thanks to a partnership between developer Crazy Viking Studios and retro specialist Digital Eclipse, we can step back into the boots of Volgarr as he embarks on a quest that will prove more deadly than any he’s faced. The result is a game that, frankly, feels improved in just about every conceivable way, making Volgarr the Viking II not only one of the best 2D action platformers on Switch, but one of the best of all time.
Let’s start with the obvious: Volgarr II is brutal. There have been several adjustments made to make the game more approachable to newcomers, which we’ll get into in more detail later, but you should know that this isn’t for the faint of heart. You will die in Volgarr II, and you will die a lot. Like the original, getting through each stage is an exercise in learning the layout, anticipating every enemy position, and observing their attack patterns and weaknesses. When entering each new area for the first time, attempting to storm through as quickly as you can is simply not an option; you can be sure that there will be something lying in wait to bring your journey to a swift and bloody end.
This man played and ranked every SNES, Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16 title.
Did you know that fishing games make up 1% of the Super NES' entire Western library? Or that sports games made up nearly a fifth of the catalogue? How about that the TG-16 didn’t have one single fishing or soccer game?
It's data nuggets like this which make one gamer's project to play and compare each and every Western-released game in the SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, and TG-16 game libraries fascinating.
Nintendo has released an adorable new piece of artwork featuring Mario and Luigi to celebrate the warm, relaxing Summer months (thanks, Tokyo Game Life).
Available to download over on My Nintendo, the artwork features Mario and his brother Luigi chiling in the shallow depths of the ocean, while a cute Blooper gazes up from underwater. We can also see a standard Super Star nestled in the sandy beach, which suggests that Mario and Luigi's vacation getaway probably wasn't Isle Delfino, where the native Shine Sprites boast a different design.
Monolith Soft, the developer behind the wonderful Xenoblade Chronicles franchise, has announced that it is looking to recruit new talent for what it describes as a 'new RPG'.
In a post via the studio's official website (thanks, Nintendo Everything), founder, CCO, and executive director Tetsuya Takahashi put a call out for a total of eight roles at the company, including 2D designer, 3D designer, environment engineer, and more.
Nintendo's share price has tanked by more than 15% on Monday morning amid global fears of a US recession and rising tensions in the Middle East.
As highlighted by Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of industry consultancy Kantan Games, almost every major Japanese gaming company saw a drop in share price as Japan's Nikkei fell by more than 12%, its biggest drop since the so-called 'Black Monday crash' of 1987.
Pinch yourselves, it's August, summer's end is approaching, and we're here to talk about video games gone by. Yep, it's time to look back at last month and talk about July's eShop Selects.
Nintendo has had another fairly quiet month on the Switch — Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition was the big one, with the likes of Ace Combat 7's long-awaited Switch port proving to be a top-tier rerelease. But the eShop has been booming, as per usual. That's what we focus on for eShop Selects, and as usual, our staff and contributors vote for their top three eShop games from the list of games we've reviewed, and we give you the winners (and the best of the rest).
Last week's bout saw us chucking Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS into the ring. The designs for this one were pretty similar, all told, but Europe ultimately lost out with its lack of supporting characters and, uh, copious stickers. North America and Japan bagged an impressive 73% of the vote, so well done!
The new Mortal Kombat movie wrapped filming earlier this year and then locked in an October 2025 release date.
Now, in a new update, series co-creator and Mortal Kombat 1 director Ed Boon has shared the very first look at the sequel movie. Boon says he saw an "unfinished cut" and jokes about grabbing the image from the phone of the movie's producer Todd Garner. Todd even responded to this in an exchange on social media.
July was packed with all sorts of exciting releases for the Nintendo Switch and August 2024 will be following it up with even more! Fortunately, we've got our American-based video producer Zion Grassl to keep us clued up on all these new releases.
One game already out is World of Goo 2. Yes, after almost 16 years, the sequel has arrived! You can read our review now:
The second round of LEGO Animal Crossing sets brings two key locales from your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island to life in Danish brick form. Alongside the Dodo Airlines terminal, K.K. Slider makes his Lego debut in the K.K.'s Concert at the Plaza set.
This is the priciest of the two sets, including three minifigures (including a new version of Isabelle), a facade of the Town Hall including the clock, the noticeboard, and the flagpole, K.K.'s camper van, and a small cafe serving tea and sweetmeats.
To celebrate the release of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter on the Nintendo Switch this week, Aspyr is currently running a Star Wars eShop flash sale in North America.
Good grief, is that August already? The passage of time may have left us spooked, but the promise of a more densely-packed Switch release schedule in the months to come is exciting!
