Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring has a battery life problem

The Galaxy Ring is one of the most exciting devices of the year for Samsung Health users looking for a carefree and screen-free fitness and health-tracking experience. It's subtle, does the job, and lasts even longer than a Galaxy Watch on a full battery charge. Or does it?

Well, it should, and it used to. Samsung advertises the Galaxy Ring for up to seven days of battery life on a full battery. It's a close approximation, as battery life will vary depending on the ring size. Bigger Galaxy Rings have bigger batteries and more battery life, but the difference isn't that great.

As mentioned in our Galaxy Ring review, we got around six days of use from our Samsung smart ring on a full charge. That's good performance for a carefree user experience, as far as we're concerned. But here's the problem. We're not getting close to that figure anymore.

Galaxy Ring has a battery drain issue

The Galaxy Ring we use for reference has been losing battery charge much quicker than before. Lately, we haven't been able to get more than three days of usage from a full battery.

That's about half of what we used to get on a full charge, and it's not much more than we'd achieve on a Galaxy Watches with a bit of clever feature management.

We're not the only Galaxy Ring users facing this issue. Here's another example from @imparkerburton on X. He used to get eight days of usage, but now the Galaxy Ring drops to a little over 50% after roughly fifteen hours.

The story continues after the video

We're guessing this is a temporary issue Samsung could and will fix through a firmware update. The Galaxy Ring might need some extra battery optimization, and if this is a widespread bug, Samsung will likely address it sooner rather than later. Until then, we'll keep you posted if we find any temporary or permanent solutions.

Galaxy Watch 4 gets Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature in India

Samsung has released an update to the Samsung Health Monitor app in India, which brings the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature to the Galaxy Watch 4 (and probably all newer Galaxy Watches). This brings one more health-related feature to Galaxy Watch 4 users in the country.

Galaxy Watch 4 gets Irregular Hearth Rhythm Notification feature in India via Samsung Health Monitor

Samsung has released a new update (version 1.3.4.004) to the Samsung Health Monitor app with a download size of 58.54MB (via Yash Agarwal). It brought the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature to the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Once the Samsung Health Monitor app's newest version is installed on your Galaxy smartphone, you can open the app to find a new pop-up window that notifies you about the IHRN feature.

Samsung Health Monitor Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification Feature India

This new feature is only available for Wear OS-based Galaxy Watches. Since the Samsung Health Monitor app is compatible with all Wear OS-based Galaxy Watches, the new feature might be available to the Galaxy Watch 5 series, Galaxy Watch 6 series, Galaxy Watch 7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Earlier this year, Samsung released the Samsung Health Monitor app in India to bring blood pressure and ECG features to Galaxy Watches in the country.

The story continues after our Galaxy Watch 7 hands-on video.

How to activate Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on Galaxy Watches?

To activate the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on your Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy phone and navigate to the ECG tab.
  2. Click the three-dot icon on the top-right corner of the screen and then tap on Settings.
  3. Tap on Notifications and then enable the Irregular Heart Rhythm toggle.

You will now receive notifications when your Galaxy Watch detects an irregular heart rhythm. A few times a day, when you are still, the Galaxy Watch will check your pulse. If it detects one hour of an irregular heart rhythm, it might indicate Atrial Fibrillation (A.Fib). If you get the IHRN notification, take your ECG reading immediately from the Samsung Health Monitor app and contact your doctor or an appropriate health clinic for consultation.

Thanks for the tip, Yash!

Samsung’s flagship Jet Bot vacuum cleaner gets better at mop cleaning

Samsung has announced that its flagship robot vacuum cleaner, the BESPOKE AI Steam, will get even better at mopping. The company has released a new update that emphasizes cleaning the mopping pads, making the whole process even more hygienic.

BESPOKE AI Steam gets longer mop pad cleaning time

The BESPOKE AI Steam is Samsung's flagship robot vacuum cleaner for the South Korean market. Its closely matched US variant is the Jet Bot Vacuum with AI, which costs $1,700. The BESPOKE AI Steam is getting a new feature to make mopping even more hygienic. Samsung said it has released a new update to the BESPOKE AI Steam that will increase the steam concentration mode from 160 seconds to 240 seconds, an increase of 80 seconds.

Samsung BESPOKE AI Steam Mop Cleaning Process

The robot vacuum has a three-step mop-cleaning process. It includes mop washing using high-temperature water, mop sterilization using steam, and mop drying using hot air. The time it takes to complete this process was 180 seconds earlier, but it has been increased to 240 seconds to increase sterilization and deodorization.

Samsung claims the BESPOKE AI Steam can remove three types of bacteria from the floors: E. coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. The robot vacuum is claimed to have a 99.99% sterilization effect and a 95% deodorization effect. Moreover, the UV LED installed inside the vacuum cleaner stops bacterial growth inside the dust collection bag.

The company says it plans to release an update to the BESPOKE AI Steam in the fourth quarter of this year. The robot vacuum would be able to detect if a person has collapsed on the floor and send a notification to their family members.

Thanks to all its cleaning, mopping, and sterilization features, the BESPOKE AI Steam is gaining popularity. Samsung says its sales have increased by 4x compared to last year.

Yoo Mi-young, Vice President of Samsung DX, said, “For consumers who are concerned about the hygiene and odor of mops during the hot and humid summer, we have updated the steam concentration mode to enable safe sterilization and deodorization without detergent,” adding, “We plan to continue to provide functional updates that reflect the needs of consumers in the future.

Galaxy S24 FE to launch soon as its US variant gets spotted

The Galaxy S24 FE is Samsung's next Fan Edition smartphone. While Samsung missed launching the Galaxy S22 FE, it looks like Samsung will continue to launch FE series smartphones every year. The company doesn't usually launch all its smartphones in the USA, but it seems like the Galaxy S24 FE will definitely be launched in the country.

Galaxy S24 FE confirmed to launch in the USA

A new and unannounced Samsung smartphone with model number SM-S721U was spotted (via 91Mobiles) in the Bluetooth SIG database. Going by the model number, the phone is the upcoming Galaxy S24 FE's carrier-locked variant for the US market. For reference, the model number of the Galaxy S23 FE's US carrier-locked variant is SM-S711U.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE USA Bluetooth Certification

The Galaxy S24 FE's Bluetooth certification document doesn't reveal any details about its specifications. However, considering the phone will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the US, it will likely feature 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 (with LE Audio and LC3 codecs). The global version of the phone likely features the Exynos 2400 chip, which was also used in the global versions of the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+.

A few days ago, complete features and specifications of the Galaxy S24 FE were leaked, along with the phone's images and color options. According to that report, the phone features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, in-display fingerprint reader, and Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection. It uses the Exynos 2400 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chip, depending on the market.

You can watch the performance of the Exynos 2400 chip in our Galaxy S24 review in the video below.

It will reportedly have an aluminum frame, glass back, and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The phone will be available in five colors: blue, graphite, mint, silver, and yellow. The phone is said to feature a 50MP primary rear camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. On the front, it has a 10MP selfie camera. It can record 4K 60fps videos from the front and rear cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Colors

The report also claimed the Galaxy S24 FE has 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage. It will run Android 14-based One UI 6.1 out of the box and get at least four major Android OS updates and five years of security patches. It is powered by a 4,565mAh battery, capable of lasting up to 78 hours of audio streaming or 29 hours of video streaming on a single charge.

The Galaxy S24 FE has GPS, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It also has 25W fast wired charging, 15W wireless Qi charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Galaxy S25 Ultra is getting a bigger screen, thinner bezels

The Galaxy S25 Ultra, which will likely launch in January 2025, reportedly has a new design language featuring more rounded corners and softer edges. It is also getting new software that will gel well with the new design. The new design also improves the Galaxy S25 Ultra's screen size and bezels.

Galaxy S25 Ultra to feature a 6.9-inch screen, thinner bezels

According to a claim from usually reliable tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), the Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a narrower body despite a bigger screen. It is said to have a 77.6mm wide body and a 6.86-inch screen. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 79mm wide body and a 6.79-inch screen. This means Samsung will offer a bigger screen with a narrower body, which is a win-win for consumers.

The bezels around the Galaxy S24 Ultra's 6.8-inch screen measure 3.35mm. The Galaxy S25 Ultra, which reportedly has a 6.9-inch screen, has 2.3mm bezels around the display. That means the upcoming phone has 31% thinner bezels. This will improve the phone's ergonomics, and people will feel more comfortable holding it for a long time.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is also said to feature more rounded corners, moving away from the sharp corners seen on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This should bring more consistency between the design of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Currently, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ have rounded corners, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra has sharper corners.

Watch our Galaxy S24 Ultra review in the video below.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is said to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip worldwide. It is an upcoming 3nm chip fabricated by TSMC and uses two high-performance CPU cores clocked at 4GHz and six power-efficient CPU cores clocked at 2.8GHz. It will reportedly use the new Adreno 8 series GPU with 40% faster performance.

Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone is said to feature a quad-camera setup on the rear. It reportedly uses a 200MP primary rear camera with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide camera, two 50MP telephoto cameras (3x and 5x optical zoom), and a 12MP selfie camera. It will continue to use a 5,000mAh battery and have 45W fast charging.

Samsung launches Odyssey OLED G8 and G9 in new sizes

At the ongoing Gamescom 2024 event in the US, Samsung unveiled its new Odyssey gaming monitors: Odyssey 3D, Odyssey OLED G8, and Odyssey OLED G9. The Odyssey 3D is the company's first glasses-free 3D gaming monitor, and you can read about it here. The Odyssey OLED G8 now comes in a new size, while the Odyssey OLED G9 has a variant that doesn't have a Smart Hub.

Samsung expands Odyssey OLED G8 and Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor lineups

Samsung unveiled the Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SD) at Gamescom 2024. It has a 34-inch QD-OLED curved screen with an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio and an 1800R curvature. It has a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 pixels, a 175Hz variable refresh rate, a 0.03s grey-to-grey response time, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for tear-free gaming.

Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 Gaming Monitor

It also features Samsung Gaming Hub and Samsung Smart Hub. This means that the gaming monitor runs Tizen OS, so you can use it as a smart TV to stream movies, music, and TV shows using apps like Apple Music, Apple TV, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube. You can also mirror your laptop's, PC's, smartphone's, or tablet's screen to the monitor using AirPlay 2, Miracast, or Smart View.

Using Samsung's Gaming Hub, you can stream games directly from the cloud. Samsung Gaming Hub has Amazon Luna, Microsoft Xbox Cloud, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Utomik. It comes bundled with a remote controller, so you can use its smart features without a laptop or PC.

Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 RGB Lighting

The Odyssey OLED G9 has two variants: G93SD and G95SD. Both variants have a 49-inch QD-OLED screen with dual-QHD (5,120 x 1,440 pixels) resolution, a 32:9 ultrawide aspect ratio, and a curvature of 1,800R. They have a 240Hz variable refresh rate (with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro) and a 0.03ms response time.

The G95SD has the Gaming Hub and Smart Hub, so you can stream games, movies, music, and TV shows. You can also control smart home devices using the SmartThings app or mirror your laptop's or phone's screen wirelessly using AirPlay 2, Miracast, and Smart View, depending on the model of your device.

The G93SD lacks Samsung's Gaming Hub and Smart Hub features. All these Odyssey gaming monitors feature Samsung OLED Safeguard, an algorithm that prevents pixel burn-in, and OLED Glare Free, a coating on the screen that minimizes glare and light reflections. Samsung's flagship S95D OLED TV also has this matte finish. They also have RGB lighting on the rear and plenty of ports.

Samsung will expand the availability of these new gaming monitors to major global markets, including Australia, Europe, and North America. The G93SD and the S95SD were earlier only available in some Asian markets, including South Korea.

Odyssey 3D is Samsung’s first glasses-free 3D gaming monitor

Samsung, one of the world's most popular gaming monitor brands, has announced its first glasses-free three-dimensional gaming monitor, the Odyssey 3D. The monitor was first teased at CES 2024 earlier this year and revealed at the ongoing Gamescom 2024 event in Cologne, Germany. The monitor uses eye-tracking technology to convert 2D visuals into 3D.

Odyssey 3D is a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor with 4K resolution and 165Hz refresh rate

The Odyssey 3D is the first 3D monitor in Samsung's gaming monitor lineup. It comes in two sizes: 27-inch and 37-inch. It uses a flat 4K QLED panel (probably a VA panel) with a 165Hz variable refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium, and 1ms response time. Samsung hasn't revealed its brightness figures yet.

The monitor tracks the user's eyes in 3D space using two cameras, while Samsung's view-mapping technology adjusts the image in real time to offer a clear three-dimensional effect. Then, it uses a lenticular lens attached to the front of the panel to display two slightly different images, one for the left eye and the other for the right eye, thus creating a 3D effect.

Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor Launch

Samsung previously claimed that you could play VR games on this monitor. It can even convert regular 2D content into 3D. If you don't want the 3D effect at all times, like when doing office work, you can switch to the monitor's 2D mode.

Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor CES 2024 Innovation Award

The Odyssey 3D has two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, and a height-adjustable stand (with tilt adjustments). This monitor won the ‘Best Of Innovation' award at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, USA, earlier this year.

Samsung hasn't announced the pricing or availability of the Odyssey 3D gaming monitor yet, but we expect it to become available before the end of this year. The South Korean firm has maintained its lead in the global gaming monitor market for the past five years continuously. It had a 20.6% value share in the first quarter of this year.

Jeong Hoon, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business Division, said, “We are excited to present a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor that is differentiated from existing displays at Gamescom, the world’s largest gaming show. We will continue to lead the premium gaming monitor market through the development of various new technologies.

Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra can turn on automatically when charging

Are you tired of manually turning on your Galaxy Watch after its battery drains to zero and you plop it on the charger? Do you wish the watch would just power on automatically once it has gained enough charge?

Well, Samsung has answered your wish with its latest smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra have a setting that, when enabled, will make sure the watch will turn on when it’s charging.

Smartwatches charge slowly. When they drain all the way to zero, it takes a few minutes for the charging process to begin. As a result, it can be a while before the watch can be powered on. That can be frustrating for anyone wanting to get their smartwatch working again as soon as possible.

How to set Galaxy Watch 7 or Watch Ultra to automatically turn on when charging

On the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, that’s no longer a concern. You can just set the watch to turn on when it’s charging from its settings menu.

To set the watch to power on automatically when it’s charging, do the following:

  1. Open the watch’s settings (swipe down on the screen and hit the cogwheel icon in the quick toggles).
  2. Select Device care, then select Battery.
  3. Scroll down to the very end to find the Auto power on option and enable it.

From what we can tell, this may be a One UI 6 Watch feature. One UI 6 Watch is the latest version of Samsung’s smartwatch software and is based on Wear OS 5. It will eventually be released for older Wear OS Galaxy smartwatches, and we are assuming—and hoping—the ability for the watch to automatically turn on when charging will come to those watches as well.

Xiaomi Mix Flip could eat into Galaxy Z Flip 6’s sales with cheaper price

Last month, Xiaomi launched its first smartphone with a clamshell form factor and a foldable display, the Mix Flip, a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Flip 6. After debuting the phone in China, the company confirmed that it would launch the phone in Europe with a price tag between EUR 1,300 and EUR 1,400. However, there was no information about when it would launch the phone there and exactly how much it would cost in the region. Well, now we have some information on the matter that could be troubling for Samsung.

On X/Twitter, @Sudhanshu1414 claims that Mix Flip is already available to purchase in Europe from a few retailers and costs EUR 1,299 in the region for 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant, which is the only memory configuration the company is offering there.

The story continues after the video…

In comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 costs EUR 1,319 for the same memory configuration in Europe. So, the one from Xiaomi is undercutting the one from Samsung by EUR 20. Although that’s minimal, the Mix Flip is now technically more affordable than the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Will that hamper the sales of Samsung’s latest clamshell smartphone? Well, we don’t think so. That’s because of two reasons. First, while the Mix Flip has excellent specifications, it is still not as durable or polished as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Second, since it is the company’s first such device, people could avoid buying it in favor of the one from Samsung. That being said, Samsung could lose a few sales of its latest foldable clamshell phone in Europe due to the launch of the Mix Flip. It would be interesting to see which phone most people go with.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is coming to a Galaxy device

Qualcomm has launched a new chipset today, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. It comes as a successor to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and sits below the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3. Before we discuss what it offers, the company has interestingly revealed that Samsung is already developing a device with this SoC.

In the past, we have seen Samsung use Snapdragon 7 series chipsets in F and M series smartphones, such as the Galaxy F55. So, the company may offer it in the next phones in those lineups, which would be the Galaxy F56 and the Galaxy M56.

However, that’s just speculation. The brand could also offer it in an A-series device. That being said, the chances of that happening are quite low as we already have a rumor of Samsung powering the Galaxy A56 with its upcoming Exynos 1580 SoC.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 features

Coming to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, it is made on a 4nm fabrication process and features one Prime core clocked at up to 2.5GHz, three performance cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz, and four efficiency cores clocked at up to 1.8GHz.

Qualcomm hasn’t provided any details about the GPU. According to the company, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 offers 20% faster CPU performance, 40% faster GPU performance, 30% better AI performance, and 12% lower power consumption compared to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3

The new chipset can drive a display with FHD+ resolution at up to 144Hz. It supports up to 16GB RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The ISP can handle 200MP photos and 4K HDR videos. Connectivity options include 5G mmWave and Sub-6GHz, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Lossless Audio, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDoU, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC.

Samsung won't be the only brand using this SoC. Qualcomm says that Realme, Sharp, and Xiaomi will also launch devices with the new chipset.
