Streaming music efficiency. 36 hours on a Pixel 6

A Pixel 6 can stream music using just 440mW of power. Ultra mobile productivity includes efficiency, especially if you’re traveling. I’ve tested many many devices over the last 15 years and we’ve come a long way. Where I was impressed at a laptop that allowed me to write articles at under 10W or stream audio using 6W, I’m now seeing a lot better. Smartphones have, by requirement, led in terms of efficiency although the huge density increase in batteries over the last ten years and efficient screens have helped to […]

Mobile Creators Kit 2023

Previously, over the last 15 years, I’ve written about mobile reporting kits. The focus was on written articles, enhanced with photography. That, of course, has changed as video becomes the primary content type for many people. The mobile creators kit, takes that video-first approach too. It’s tried, tested and relatively low-cost. There are three 4k cameras here, and that’s not including the full-hd video available from the Chromebook. The kit here isn’t ground-breaking and, to be honest, could have been a 2022 kit. There’s a camera in here that’s at […]

Lenovo Duet 3 Chromebook. 900 grams of ARM-based ultra-mobility in test

As I prepare a full review of this 10.9-inch 2-in-1 ChromeOS based device I need to put something into perspective. I haven’t fully tested an ultra-mobile PC for over 6 years. I’m going to need some time to re-base my expectations because this Lenovo Duet 3 just seems too good. I must be missing something. Maybe you can help me! With the Duet 3 you’re getting a good keyboard, a very bright 2K 10.9-inch touch and pen-enabled screen, 10+ hours of battery life, an advanced app-store, high levels of security, […]

Project UMPC Recovery

The UMPC is making a comeback, and it’s mostly thanks to the GPD Win. UMPCPortal is making a comeback too. Over the last year I’ve been working hard to salvage the site and bring it back to the standards that you expect. More on that, the problems this site had, and the outlook for UMPCs in 2019, follows. In the last year on UMPCPortal there were just three posts. In the last 2 years, just 7 posts. UMPCPortal wasn’t just on ice, it was getting a bad reputation for being […]

UMPCPortal survived the cull. 12 years old and still going.

UMPCPortal, the site that I started as Carrypad.com in Feb 2006, survives! It’s full of mobile computing history that needs to be preserved. Maybe in another 10 years we’ll be able to look back at the equipment and wonder how we ever survived. Here’s 2007, for example. Crazy! You’ll notice that most ads and plugins and bells and whistles are now gone so the site is faster and hopefully more stable.  You might also notice that the sites Ultrabooknews and Chromebookworld are gone. They were out of date and needed […]

Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK. A Mini PC good for gaming and video production

Hades Canyon NUC If you’re looking for a mobile PC for high-end work such as gaming, video editing or live video production then this Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK is the most powerful solution you can find today. In 1300 grams, lighter than most laptops, you’ll find a Kaby Lake G Quad Core i7 CPU package with a TDP of 100W. That huge TDP figure is because Intel have dropped an AMD Radeon RX Vega M GH on to the package. It’s an incredibly powerful solution and will compete with Nvidia GTX […]

Hades Canyon VR Machine. Quad-core NUC for video, gaming and VR

Intel has launched the Hades Canyon NUC, a quad-core high-end mini PC in the style of the Skull Canyon NUC that I’ve personally been close to buying several times after I tested it for NotebookCheck. It’s aimed at gaming and graphics-heavy processing including video editing and I tip this to be quite the hot product for the new generation of multi-camera live streaming systems based on NDI (video over IP) standards. Update: New Hades Canyon review information. This time round the mini-PC will include not only a high-end quad-core 8th Generation […]
