Friday Night Videos is a blast from the past

Screenshot: Bud Light ad from the 1980s

Friday Night Videos was a weekly dose of music videos for those without cable and, therefore, no MTV. I hadn't thought about it in years until this episode from 1984, complete with commercials, popped up on YouTube. It is pure 80s nostalgia with Tracey Ullman, who I honestly forgot had a music career, Rockwell, whose Somebody's Watching Me video still creeps me out, a "brand new video by John Cougar Mellencamp," and a talking head of Freddie Mercury smoking like a chimney in an intro to the Radio Gaga video. — Read the rest

Starliner spacesuits not compatible with SpaceX Dragon

Two months into what was scheduled to be an eight-day mission, we learn that spacesuit compatibility problems are also keeping NASA's astronauts stuck in space.

I missed something in the recent discussion about the possibility of Starliner's stranded crew returning to Earth on a SpaceX Dragon. — Read the rest

I want to try out $5000 hiking pants

Image: Arcteryx

Spending $5000 on hiking pants sounds absurd, but hear me out. These $5000 hiking pants might mean I could go on real hikes again, something I haven't been able to do in years.

Wearable robotics company Skip and hiking gear outfitter Arc'teryx have teamed up to produce MO/GO, hiking pants with a battery-powered exoskeleton that they claim gives you a 40% boost going uphill, makes you feel 30 pounds lighter on flat ground, and cushions your knees on the way down. — Read the rest

Alex Trebek honored with U.S. stamp

My 89-year-old mom and I have a nightly tradition of watching Jeopardy together. When Ken Jennings announced on Friday's episode that Alex Trebek would be honored with a US postage stamp, we both got a little teary-eyed. While we both agree that Ken is doing an excellent job, there's no replacing Alex Trebek, no matter how carefully they pronounce "genre." — Read the rest

Starliner return delayed again, this time indefinitely

Starliner capsule. Image: NASA

NASA's troubled Starliner spacecraft arrived at the International Space Station on June 5th, after two previous attempts were scrubbed due to issues with the launch system and thrusters. The helium leaks that caused the second attempt to be scrubbed were known to persist during the successful launch, and additional leaks were discovered after docking. — Read the rest

Star Wars Oreos contain "Kyber" crystals

Not one to rest on its laurels, the makers of Oreo cookies are following up the Sour Patch Kids Oreos with Star Wars Oreos. They actually look really cool.

Available in two unique packs made with classic OREO chocolate wafer cookies, each pack has either dark side cookies with red creme or light side cookies with blue creme.

Frog video has the best captions in the history of captions

You have probably seen this video of an adorable little frog with an oversized squeal, which I assume is terrifying to other tiny frogs. While the original version is one of the best things on the internet, the BBC improves it with the addition of narration, and turning on the captions is perfection. — Read the rest

Baseball too boring? Check out Banana Ball

Baseball isn't always very exciting. Even as a dedicated fan, I can admit this. Major League Baseball has made some improvements to speed up the game, like the pitch clock. Many things still slow down the game – mound visits, endless foul balls, and, even with the ghost runner, four-hour games thanks to extra innings. — Read the rest

Ozzy Man Reviews flying penguins

Penguins

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the incredible National Geographic footage of penguins leaping off a fifty-foot wall of ice into the ocean. The footage has gotten the Ozzy Man treatment, which is predictably hilarious.

I love how he manages to give the penguins individual personalities, from yelling "To Infinity and Beyond!" — Read the rest

Deadpool & Wolverine red band trailer has arrived – let's f*cking go!

I have been waiting for so many things in this movie, like the OG Wolverine costume and hair. And Madonna's Like a Prayer, for some reason. But no cocaine because that's the one thing [Kevin] Feige said they can't do. The R rating lets Wolverine really be Wolverine. — Read the rest

Moon of Jupiter has a lake of lava

NASA's Juno spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016. The craft's primary missions involving studies of the gas giant itself were completed in 2018, but the project was extended to include the moons of Ganymede, Europa, and Io. Recently, the craft passed within 930 miles of the surface of Io and captured close-up images of the moon's highly volcanic northern latitudes. — Read the rest
