Everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024

Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 is done and dusted for another year, but it's certainly kicked off this year's Gamescom with a bang - and we've got all the news, trailers and announcements right here in one handy summary. Whether you missed the show itself or just want a handy reminder of everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live this year, read on below.

Of course, alongside the main show, this year's ONL also had a 30-minute pre-show that was stuffed with announcements as well, which we'll quickly run through here before getting into the detail of the main show announcements below. Here, we got new trailers for Dave the Diver's latest crossovers, spooky co-op adventure Begone Beast and construction sim Roadcraft, alongside Italian Soulslike Enotria: The Last Song, Cairn (that shouty, but lovely looking climbing game from Summer Game Fest), life sim Inzoi from PUBG publishers Krafton, as well as a Terry showcase for Street Fighter 6.

There were also new game announcements in the pre-show in the form of Sniper Elite Resistance (coming 2025), the Donkey Kong-esque platformer Nikoderiko: The Magical World (with music from David Wise, no less), "first person farming horror allegory" We Harvest Shadows, the also quite spooky-looking Aila, a tease for the sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet (aptly named Revenge of the Savage Planet), action RPG Tribe Nine from the creators of Danganronpa, and the Lashana Lynch-led Directive 8020: A Dark Pictures Game.

Dying Light: The Beast is a new 18-hour standalone game that began life as DLC

Dying Light developer Techland has shown off a new game in its zombie series that began life as a DLC for Dying Light 2 Stay Human.

Announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live, Dying Light: The Beast is a solo or four-player co-op experience pitched as a "tight" 18-hour ride through a fresh area of the franchise's world.

Dying Light protagonist Kyle Crane, once again voiced by Roger Craig Smith, returns here, a decade on. In-game, Crane has been in captivity, and experimented on. The upside? You have zombie DNA powers to unleash that beast on enemies.

Dying Light: The Beast brings back a fan favourite character

Dying Light: The Beast is a new stand alone game that brings back Kyle Crane from the first Dying Light game and it’s DLC. Kyle was absent from Dying Light 2, probably because at the end of The Following players could experience two different endings and neither of them were particularly… healthy.

The game is set thirteen years since Kyle was last seen and finds him exploring the post-apocalyptic Castor Woods, a once-popular tourist destination. The area is populated with human factions as well as monsters including “the mysterious creature that’s turned the woods into its personal hunting grounds.”

As you might have gathered Kylie is no longer fully human. “Years of brutal experimentation took its toll, but the zombie DNA and yours are now intertwined so that you are able to unleash a beast-like power,” say Techland. “It flows through your veins. No one can take it from you. Use it. And you’ll discover it’s not just a curse.”

Voice actor Roger Craig Smith will be returning to the role of Kyle Crane. “Stepping back into Kyle Crane’s shoes feels like a reunion with an old friend,” Smith said. “And even though he’s gone through a terrible time, there’s still plenty of legendary hero left in him.”

The extra nice news is that if you own  Dying Light 2: Stay Human Ultimate Edition you will get The Beast for free!

“Development of Dying Light: The Beast originally started as a story DLC for Dying Light 2 Stay Human. But after two years of work, its size and scope has changed so much that it evolved into a standalone, self-contained experience,” say Techland. “To show appreciation for the community who patiently waited for the DLC, Techland will be offering Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost to all owners of the Dying Light 2 Stay Human Ultimate Edition, delivering a full standalone adventure instead of just a DLC.”

Dying Light: The Beas coming to to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox and PlayStation – and that includes last gen  – but no release date has been given.

The new Dying Light game is completely free, for some people

I don’t know about you but one of my purest joys in gaming is leaping over stuff. From Mirror’s Edge to Dying Light, mantling and running and jumping and landing is always brilliant and is something gaming absolutely nails. That’s why I’m looking forward to the newly-announced standalone entry in the latter series; Dying Light The Beast. If you’re looking forward to it too then there’s good news - you may be able to get the game for the grand price of nothing.

Here are the first details for Techland’s Dying Light: The Beast

Techland has just launched the official Steam store page for Dying Light: The Beast, revealing its first details. Dying Light: The Beast will be a standalone game, meaning that it won’t require Dying Light 2. In this game, you will assume the role of Kyle Crane, the man whose selflessness during the initial virus outbreak … Continue reading Here are the first details for Techland’s Dying Light: The Beast

Dying Light: The Beast is a new standalone game from Techland

Update: Oh, I missed this. "To show appreciation for the community who patiently waited for the DLC, Techland will be offering Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost to all owners of the Dying Light 2 Stay Human Ultimate Edition, delivering a full standalone adventure instead of just a DLC." That's nice!

This seems like an odd one. I’m only tangentially familiar with the Dying Light games, but I was under the impression that the model here was releasing a single game, then updating and expanding it for years. Whether standalone adventure Dying Light: The Beast represents an attempt to course correct after Dying Light 2’s mixed reception, then, I’m not entirely sure. But if nothing else, it does share something in common with all the other adverts at Gamescom tonight: it is a game that exists, and will presumably be playable at some point.

Techland is unleashing the beast with its next game. Dying Light: The Beast is a new standalone game set in the Dying Light universe, starring the original Dying Light protagonist Kyle Crane.

While Dying Light: The Beast began its journey as DLC for Dying Light 2, Techland decided to change direction and make it a full standalone game. All Dying Light 2 Stay Human players who own the Ultimate Edition will get a free copy of the upcoming adventure. This will be excellent news for those who have waited patiently for the DLC's development.

Set after the events of the first game, Dying Light: The Beast will offer 18+ hours of gameplay. Playing as Crane, players will seek revenge on those who subjected him to brutal experiments while in captivity. The action will be set in Castor Woods, which has been completely transformed from a popular tourist destination to a post-apocalyptic dead zone.

The experiments also mean that Crane will be superior to ordinary humans. Aside from zombies, players will encounter different people and factions, and not all will be friendly. In Dying Light: The Beast, Crane can use vehicles, aside from relying on his parkour skills to survive. You'll also still be able to play solo or in co-op sessions.

Dying Light: The Beast is now up for wishlist on all available platforms. Techland has yet to announce a launch date.
