Intravenous: A Tale of Vengeance Begins

Title: Intravenous
Type of Game: Stealth – Tactical Shooter
Developer: Roman Glebenkov
Publisher: Roman Glebenkov
Released: July 26, 2021
Platforms Available: PC
Platform Reviewed: PC
Level of Maturity: Mature (17+)
Reading Time: 8 minutes

The story starts with you and your brother going to a bar; on the way back from the bar, you get jumped by some junkies and beaten up badly. Your brother ends up in a coma and dies a day later. Police don’t do much, so your mission is to avenge your brother. I (character Steve) start the hunt with the words, “This one is for you, big brother,” which perfectly sets the tone for the first mission. And the first mission is, you guessed it right, to kill the junkie’s leader.

As I started the first mission, I tried the stealth approach, which I quickly abandoned since I was detected rapidly trying to hide the body in a dumpster, so it quickly turned into a gunfight. I died a few times on the first level since I chose the most challenging mode. I highly advise against this if you are new to the genre. After murdering about a dozen of the junkies, I did not find the main guy, so the story continued. Worth noting was that the first mission’s name was Druggie Ghetto, which I found hilarious.

Mastering the Tools of Revenge

The controls are intuitive: WASD to move, and the mouse to aim and shoot. You can also control your walking speed with the mouse wheel, and there’s a laser aim on right-click. This feature is essential for targeting lamps, cameras, and similar environmental objects, and it’s handy in situations where you need to aim through windows and such.

After the first mission, I got a call from a mysterious dude offering me help; long story short, I ended up with new weapons and training rooms. This is when the fun started! I got a bunch of new weapons, including some with silencers, as well as some new skills. I could picklock the doors, break the light switches, and use night vision. Now, I was ready for some stealth action!

The Unforgiving World of Stealth

Or so I thought! Stealth is hard to pull off in this game; there are so many details that you have to pay attention to—for example, the windows. When I passed too close to the window, I was detected. When I killed an enemy inside the building, and another enemy passed next to the window, I was detected unless I turned off the lights.

Yes, I had to turn off the lights inside the building, and even then, I was sometimes detected. There are ways around this, tho, like the dart gun. I used a dart gun to steal the mission entirely, but after some time, it became boring. Instead, I switched to a silenced pistol and a rifle. I would use a gun to stealth, but eventually, I would get detected or get bored of it, so I would switch to AR or AK and shoot my way through. This only worked for the first few missions; at mission 4, I had to go cat mode since every enemy had an AR. I broke stealth a few times, but I lost the trace. Another exciting feature I came across in this mission was the vents.

I was infiltrating through the vents, and I liked that I had to crawl through, not just watch a cutscene. Another new feature I liked in this mission was the cameras. I had to dodge the cameras, which were slow and easy to dodge, but it still added a layer of strategy to the stealth game. Note that complete stealth is required for hard mode and above, with no detections, or you become minced meat immediately.

A Dance with Death: The Complex Missions

There are also some missions where I had to eliminate the whole enemy team, like in the Abandoned Complex mission where I was bait to get enemies to surround me, then I had to tick them all off one by one, and most are heavily armed. I managed to do most of this mission stealthily, and I advise you to try the same since there are shotgun enemies, and they will kill you in one shot from close range, and this particular map did not offer much distance.

The Art of Stealth: Details that Delight

Stealth details I particularly liked: Toile flush to distract enemies, generators you can break, lights switches and shooting the lamps, windows you can be seen through or climb through, cameras are connected with security rooms (cameras can be shot down), lockpick vs. door bash, armor weight effects the noise you make, you can use bottles to distract enemies, climbing through vents, putting enemies to sleep using darts. There are more, but these were my favorite details.

Other remarkable details: finish off the enemy by stamping his head in when he is knocked out, critical cards for reinforced doors, all sorts of weapons and gadgets if you decide to go in guns blazing. etc.

A Price for Vengeance: The Baker’s Dilemma

In the Baker’s panic room mission, I got to choose whether I was going to spare the Baker’s life or not; I decided not to, to follow up with my character’s rage and determination that I felt so far in the game. It could have been a better choice. If you kill the Baker, you cannot access your loadout anymore – you have to make do with the weapons you find in the following levels.

However, if you spare him instead, you will still have access to your loadout and continue choosing whatever weapon you want before starting a level. So choose wisely! If you do make the mistake I made, load up the Baker’s panic room mission and complete it again; that is what I did. Also, this is a fantastic mission to stealth through by knocking out enemies; I managed to get four achievements in one go: Complete the level without taking damage. Complete the level without breaking stealth. Complete level without killing anyone. Spare Baker’s life. This was also the mission that ended both of the gangs that were involved in the brother’s murder that set my character on fire at the start of the game.

The Final Betrayal: Unmasking the True Villain

But the story continues. As I returned to my house, I was attacked by eight hitmen, and this mission was probably my favorite in the whole game. I was caught off guard with no armor, and I had to grab a pistol from my drawer, with only one magazine, while Hitman was well-armed. After I defeated them, I found another informant who was an undercover cop and tasked me with killing his boss in return for information on humans who assaulted me. After killing the whole casino full of tugs, I discovered I was a pawn this whole time. Remember the accomplice from the start? Well, it turns out he was the leader of the third gang and was using me to kill his competition. Pointless to say, but my last mission was to kill all of his tugs and eventually him. This is where the game ends.

Final Thoughts: A Dated but Detailed Experience

In conclusion, it is a dated game in terms of graphics, but it still offers so much. The level of detail in the game is excellent, and the story, even though not narrated, is still well put together. The stealth is where the game shines, and the attention to detail is enormous. It needs some polish, but Intravenous 2 fixed these minor issues. Intravenous Two was launched just a few days ago, and I am also playing it! Stay posted for the Review on our page; it is coming soon!

Bananas and Bullets: The Wild Ride of My Friend Pedro

Title: My Friend Pedro
Type of Game: 2D Action-Shooter Platformer
Developer: DeadToast Entertainment
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Released: June 20, 2019
Platforms Available: iOS, Android
Platform Reviewed: Android
Level of Maturity: Teen (Violence, Blood, Crude Humor)
Reading Time: 8 minutes

“My Friend Pedro” is a game that came out in June 2019. It’s a 2D Action-Shooter Platformer. As you already know, I love platformers. On top of that, it is an offline, no-WiFi game, and I needed something to play on my way to work. In the game, I was guided by a talking banana, Pedro, who led me on a mission to shoot through waves of enemies and jump over all sorts of obstacles. It sounds weird, and it is, but in a good way.

My Friend Pedro: Shooting Puzzles
My Friend Pedro: Shooting Through Puzzles

Quirky Storytelling and Bananas

The story is simple: I was saving Pedro’s family from crates of fruits. The funniest bit for me was when I saved an apple rather than a banana, and Pedro informed me that it was an adopted child. In the second instance, he sends his banana son to get him a pack of cigarettes. I loved these funny bits in the story.

Mastering the Art of Slow-Motion Combat

I noticed immediately that the game is very smooth (after you get used to the slider commands if you never played this type of game before). The controls are simple enough, but there’s a learning curve until you get used to it. Two joystick pads are on both sides, but you can also use only one. I used only the right one because my left hand was unfriendly with the slide-down command. I managed to get three stars on most levels, so I am guessing it is designed so you can play with it without the second pad. You can slow down time while in mid-air, which significantly helps.

Even with no obstacle, you can jump up and aim/plan your next move in slow motion. On top of it, I was able to easily overcome the faster-paced missions, where you are on a skateboard, using this feature. I spun through the air, dodging bullets while returning fire in slow motion. It feels like a mix between a John Wick movie and a skateboard trick video. The genre has nothing new, but it is very well executed if you ask me!
I was pleased to see motorcycle action after each chapter. I got to drive a bike from one chapter to another, dodging crates and shooting other bikers or a truck running away with crates, which was one of Pedro’s children. This detail is somewhat polished, but I still loved it.

Visuals and Sound: The Pulse of Pedro

The visuals are stylish but not overly detailed, which works for this game. Everything is smooth and fast, with a lot of emphasis on how your character moves. It’s not the game that’s trying to wow you with graphics. It’s more about the action and keeping everything running smoothly. There’s a good use of color wildly when contrasting the backgrounds and the enemies, so you always know where to focus. The music is another strong point. It’s an upbeat, electronic soundtrack that perfectly fits the game’s pace. The sound effects are also on end, with satisfying gunfire and explosions.

Replayability and Performance

My Friend Pedro is a single-player-only game, and you can play without WIFI, which also works for ad avoidance. You must watch an ad every time you die unless your wifi is turned off. The game focuses on creating a specific experience where you constantly try to outdo yourself with better combos and wilder moves, which will reward you with three stars if you execute it flawlessly. I found some missions pretty hard, but with some trial and error, I got three stars on almost all of them. This added to the replay value, too, not only for the stars but sometimes just for fun. I replayed certain sections to see if I could pull off something more extraordinary or efficient, even when I had the three stars already.

A Smooth Ride with Minor Glitches

Another thing I appreciated was the simple interface. There’s not a lot of clutter on the screen, so that you can focus on the action. The accessibility options are essential, but I found no barriers to playing the game. Performance-wise, it runs smoothly, which is crucial given how fast-paced it is. I did encounter minor bugs or, better said, glitches, where I would fly through the edge of the platform when I was not supposed to or miss a landing where it was supposed to be possible to land, but it is infrequent, and nothing that will ruin your gameplay.

Conclusion:

My Friend Pedro is a game that knows its strengths and plays to them perfectly. It delivers an exhilarating, stylish platforming shooter experience without getting bogged down in unnecessary complexities. The smooth, acrobatic gameplay, intuitive controls, and slow-motion mechanics allow creative and satisfying combat scenarios.
While the story is simple, its quirky humor adds personality to the intense action. The game’s artistic direction and energetic soundtrack create an immersive experience that complements the fast-paced gameplay. The three-star rating system and inherent joy of perfecting runs provide excellent replay value. Despite minor glitches and some less polished elements, My Friend Pedro stands out as a focused, well-executed game. For fans of the genre or anyone seeking a unique, action-packed experience, it’s an easy recommendation that delivers hours of bullet-dodging, banana-guided fun.

Forged In Shadow Torch (F.I.S.T.): A Diesel-Punk Adventure with Rayton the Rabbit

Title: Forged In Shadow Torch (F.I.S.T.)
Type of Game: Action-Platformer (Metroidvania)
Developer: TiGames
Publisher: Bilibili
Released: September 2021
Platforms Available: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC Game
Platform Reviewed: PC (Windows)
Level of Maturity: Teen (T)
Article Reading Time: 23 minutes

“F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch” is an action-platformer game that was released in September 2021. Developed by TiGames and published by Bilibili, this game falls into the Metroidvania genre, which is known for its exploration, backtracking, and the gradual acquisition of abilities that allow us to access previously unreachable areas. In “F.I.S.T.,” you take on the role of Rayton, a rabbit armed with a massive mechanical fist, drill, and my favorite the whip called “The Whisker” (acts as a grappling hook also), battling through a dieselpunk world filled with robotic enemies and intricate traps.

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch Boss Fight Compilation – Best Moments & Highlights!

A World Forged in Detail

Right off the bat, what I really love and appreciate about F.I.S.T. is its beautifully crafted world. The game is set in Torch City, a place that feels alive with its detailed backgrounds and dynamic environments. The dieselpunk aesthetic is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the game’s atmosphere. The attention to detail in the graphics is impressive. Each area has a unique look and feel, from the dark, oppressive factories to the neon-lit streets, and my ultimate favorite cat’s sanctuary. The lighting effects, in particular, are outstanding, adding depth and a sense of realism to the environment. Check out my Boss Fights compilation video below!

Mastering Mechanics and Combat

The gameplay mechanics in “F.I.S.T.” are a perfect blend of familiar platformer elements and fresh, innovative ideas. The game is about exploration and combat. As Rayton, you navigate through various interconnected areas, fighting enemies, solving puzzles, and collecting upgrades. The game encourages backtracking, as new abilities often open up previously inaccessible paths. This is a hallmark of the genre, and “F.I.S.T.” executes it flawlessly if you ask me. Combat in “F.I.S.T.” is both challenging and rewarding. Rayton’s primary weapon is the mechanical fist at first, which can be upgraded and modified as you progress. There are three main weapons in the game: the Fist, the Drill, and the Whip. Each weapon has its unique moves and abilities, and mastering them is crucial for overcoming the game’s tougher enemies and bosses.

Whip It Good: Combat Highlights

My personal favorite is the Whip, which acts like a grapple hook as well. This weapon allows for fast and fluid combat, letting you zip around the screen and attack enemies from a distance. It adds a layer of strategy to the fights, and once I unlocked it, I only used other weapons if I really had to. The whip is so much fun, it’s a pity you don’t have it from the beginning. The bosses in “F.I.S.T.” are a highlight of the game. Each one has unique mechanics and requires different strategies to defeat.

They are tough, often requiring multiple attempts to learn their patterns and find the best way to take them down. Each defeat feels like a learning experience, and each victory is incredibly satisfying. Few bosses were too easy, like the underwater Bloodsnail, but at the same time very unique, since you fight him underwater. On the other hand, some bosses I was stuck on for quite some time. Which I absolutely loved!

A Symphony of Sound and Story

The game is a single-player game with no multiplayer aspects at all. As you progress, you uncover more about Torch City and the characters that inhabit it. There are also plenty of hidden areas to explore, which slightly adds to the game’s replayability. Sound and music play a significant role in “F.I.S.T.” The soundtrack is atmospheric, fitting perfectly with the game’s dark and industrial theme. The music changes dynamically depending on the situation, ramping up during intense combat and calming down during exploration as you would imagine. The sound effects are decent as well.

Navigating Technical Terrain

One area where I had some issues was with the controls. The game is designed with a controller in mind, and playing with a keyboard felt cramped. My hands were too close together, and it was difficult to perform some of the more complex maneuvers. The game does include a warning about this on the loading screen, but I didn’t realize how much it would affect my experience until I switched to a controller. Once I did, the controls felt much more responsive and intuitive. This made a significant difference and made the game easier, so I naturally switched back to the keyboard and beat the whole game on it!! If you want more challenge, use the keyboard!

Another area that needs improvement in F.I.S.T. is the user interface. It feels clunky and unintuitive. Navigating through the menus is awkward as you can’t use mouse clicks, making the process more tedious. The map is also problematic; you can’t zoom in or out, which makes it difficult to see your surroundings. This becomes especially frustrating when trying to locate specific hidden areas or backtrack to previous locations. A more detailed map with improved navigation options would be highly beneficial.

Smooth Performance, Hidden Depths

Performance-wise, “F.I.S.T.” runs exceptionally well on my system with an Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti. I consistently enjoyed a stable 60 FPS throughout my playthrough. The game loads quickly, and I encountered no crashes or major bugs. Even in heavily detailed areas, there were no noticeable frame drops, providing a smooth and seamless gameplay experience.

“F.I.S.T.” also includes some interesting hidden elements and Easter eggs. Exploring every nook and cranny of Torch City often rewards you with lore, upgrades, or even hidden bosses and skins! Yes, that’s right, there are a couple of skins you can get, my favorite is the pink fist. You get the skins by finding hidden posters and trading them in. These secrets add another layer of depth to the game and make exploration feel more rewarding. One particularly interesting fact is that the game’s world is inspired by both Eastern and Western cultures, blending them to create a unique environment.

A Tale of Progress and Puzzles

Reflecting on my time with “F.I.S.T.,” I can say that it is a standout title in the Platformers genre. The combination of its stunning visuals, challenging combat, and engaging story makes it a must-play for fans of action platformers. The game’s difficulty can be intimidating at first, but with practice and perseverance, it becomes incredibly fun. The variety of weapons and upgrades keeps the gameplay fresh, and the numerous secrets and side quests add to its longevity. For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of “F.I.S.T.” is the sense of progression. As you explore Torch City and defeat enemies, you constantly acquire new abilities and upgrades that make Rayton more powerful. The design of traps, is another standout feature, and it deserves its place in my review big time.

The game includes a variety of traps that challenge your reflexes and problem-solving skills. My favorite traps are found in the mines, where stepping on ropes with bells attached to them triggers a cascade of arrows. This clever design showcases the game’s attention to detail. The way these traps are integrated into the environment enriches the exploration experience, making each area feel more immersive and dangerous. Other memorable traps were in the underwater base, where I was dodging something that reminded me of those WW1 underwater bombs we all saw in the movies, while constantly getting hit by a laser-beaming mechanical octopus or whatever that thing was.

Intricate Puzzles and Engaging Characters

The puzzle design in F.I.S.T. was also pretty good. One of my favorite puzzle segments is found in the Cat’s Sanctuary. Here, you must transport a crucial door-opening device across the map, navigating a series of traps and battling monsters that are intent on destroying it. This puzzle requires careful planning and quick reflexes, as you need to avoid obstacles and fend off enemies while ensuring the device remains intact. This segment is a testament to the game’s ability to combine problem-solving with action, offering an immersive experience. The puzzles are challenging yet not too hard and obnoxious. The game’s story is another strong point.

It unfolds gradually, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged. The characters are well-developed, each with their motivations and backstories. Rayton himself is a compelling protagonist, and his journey from a retired warrior to a hero fighting for his city is pretty cool. One aspect of “F.I.S.T.” that I particularly appreciated is the balance between combat and exploration. The game doesn’t just throw waves of enemies at you; it also encourages you to explore the environment, solve puzzles, and uncover secrets. The game also includes a variety of enemy types, each with their unique attacks and behaviors. This variety keeps the combat interesting and forces you to adapt your strategies. From robotic soldiers to massive mechanical beasts, or mine demons, you got it all.

Conclusion: A Diesel-Punk Delight

“F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch” is a fantastic addition to the Platformers genre. Its stunning visuals, challenging combat, and engaging story make it a must-play for fans of action platformers. The game’s balance of combat and exploration, along with its variety of enemies and bosses, keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting. While the keyboard controls can be a bit cramped, switching to a controller solves this issue and makes the game much more enjoyable. The cleaner user interface and accessibility options would be a plus, but it won’t hurt the overall experience that much.

Saints Row The Third: A Hilariously Chaotic Open-World

A Heist Gone Wrong Setting the Tone

From the moment I stepped into the shoes of the Third Street Saints’ leader, I knew I was in for something different. The bank heist went wrong that starts the game sets the tone perfectly, similar to GTA V! This wasn’t going to be your average open-world experience. I was immediately thrown into the deep end, and I enjoyed most of it.

Building an Empire Property and Strategy

Taking over Steelport became a major part of my playthrough. It’s not just about completing main story missions, there is much more to it, I found myself engaged in a variety of activities. The property acquisition system quickly became one of my favorite aspects. I’d spend time buying up businesses for a steady income and unique bonuses or splurge on new weapons and vehicles. This constant decision-making aspect or you could say strategy kept me involved throughout the game.

Weapons of Mass Hilarity Combat Variety

The combat in Saints Row The Third is where I found some of the most fun. The gunplay feels responsive, with an arsenal that ranges from standard pistols and assault rifles to outlandish sci-fi options like the Mollusk Launcher and the Apoca-Fist. This variety kept combat interesting for me, even after many hours. I found myself seamlessly transitioning from shooting to melee combat to using superpowers (unlocked later in the game) without missing a beat. The wrestling-style takedowns I could perform on enemies became a favorite of mine.

Vehicular Mayhem Cars as Weapons

Vehicle combat is another highlight. Unlike many open-world games where cars feel like mere transportation, here they’re weapons. The “car surfing” mechanic, where I could leap onto moving vehicles and hijack them mid-drive, never got old. The progression system kept me going in a sense as well. As I completed missions and activities, I earned respect (XP) and cash, which is the main currency. Respect unlocked new abilities and upgrades, while cash let me purchase items and customize my character. These upgrades weren’t just cosmetic; they significantly impacted my gameplay. For example, upgrading my sprint allowed me to run indefinitely, making traversal more enjoyable.

The Awesome Button Elevating Everyday Actions

One of the most unique aspects of the gameplay that I enjoyed is the “Awesome Button” (usually mapped to the sprint button). This action button turns ordinary actions into extraordinary ones. Running becomes parkour, carjacking becomes a flying kick through the windshield, and jumping out of a car turns into an action movie-style roll. It’s a simple mechanic that adds excitement to even the most mundane activities for me.

Wacky and Wild Side Activities Galore

The variety of side activities in Saints Row The Third is impressive, especially for a dated game, and I found myself constantly distracted by them, which made me feel like I was in primary school again, playing GTA on my PS1. From the adrenaline-pumping “Tank Mayhem” where I wreaked havoc in a military tank, to the bizarre “Insurance Fraud” where I threw myself into traffic to rack up medical bills, each activity felt distinct. My favorite was “Professor Genki’s Super Ethical Reality Climax,” a deadly game show where I navigated trap-filled rooms while shooting mascots and collecting prizes. These activities were very fun and refreshing, and they ramped up my play time significantly.

Chaos and Customization Crafting Your Identity

The level of customization in this game is also pretty good, I like it a lot because I can customize my weapons and vehicles too. There’s something satisfying about mowing down enemies with a gold-plated assault rifle while driving a funny pink muscle car. The missions are well done. Sure, there’s a main storyline to follow, but how I get there is often up to me. I often found myself getting sidetracked on the way to a mission, engaging in impromptu street battles, or stumbling upon hidden collectibles.

Co-op Carnage Double the Destruction

Co-op play adds another dimension to the gameplay that I enjoyed. Teaming up with a friend turned the already chaotic experience into absolute mayhem. Coordinating attacks, sharing vehicles, and competing for the most outrageous stunts created memorable moments that solo play couldn’t match. I recall a particularly funny session where my co-op partner and I tried to complete a mission using only melee attacks and wrestling moves, turning a simple shootout into a ridiculous WWE-style brawl, and yes we did manage to beat it, I’m not going to tell you how long it took us though!

Air Superiority Vertical Combat Adventures

One of the most memorable gameplay elements for me was the use of airspace. Helicopters, jets, and even a VTOL jet (which I unlocked later in the game) allowed me to take the fight into the air, and it added a whole new dimension to both combat and exploration. The game also features a unique take on fast travel that I found both convenient and fun. Instead of simply teleporting, I could call in my homies to pick me up in a helicopter. This not only got me where I needed to go but could also drop me into the action from above, allowing for dramatic entrances. It made even simple travel feel epic. As I progressed through the game, the abilities I unlocked became increasingly sci-fi-like, resulting in superpowers that let me glide through the air or throw fireballs. These powers opened up new strategies and ways for me to approach challenges, keeping the gameplay fresh even in the late game.

The Final Verdict: A Symphony of Chaos

In conclusion, Saints Row The Third’s gameplay is all about fun. While it may not be the most realistic or grounded experience, it delivers entertainment from start to finish. Even years after its release, I still find myself coming back to it when I need a dose of wild chaos. There’s still nothing quite like Saints Row The Third.

Mastering the Combat Dance

Weplaygames.net Youtube Channel: Victor Vran Diablo-like RPG Game Trailer

Victor Vran is a fast-paced action diablo-like game with RPG mechanics. We control Victor Vran, a demon hunter, navigating through a variety of environments filled with monsters to defeat and loot to collect. The game emphasizes real-time combat, where you must dodge, block, and attack strategically. Weapons, outfits, demon powers, and destiny cards allow for extensive customization of Victor’s abilities and playstyle. Each weapon type (ranging from swords and shotguns to scythes and lightning guns) offers unique attacks and combos, encouraging experimentation with different play styles. The learning curve is balanced, giving an easy start while gradually introducing more complex mechanics and tougher enemies. The game’s approach to character progression, which is tied to gear and cards apart from traditional leveling, adds strategic depth to character building and adaptation.

Crafting Destiny with Cards

A standout feature in Victor Vran is the Destiny Card system. Players earn Destiny Points as they progress, which can be used to equip Destiny Cards. These cards grant various passive abilities and bonuses, such as increased damage, faster healing, or enhanced critical hit chances. This system allows for extensive customization with a non-traditional approach. With a variety of cards to choose from, you can mix and match to adapt to different combat scenarios.

Alchemical Adventures: Gear Transmutation

Another one of the game’s features I must cover is the transmutation system. This system allows us to combine and upgrade the equipment using various transmutation recipes. By sacrificing unwanted gear and materials, I enhanced my favorite weapons and outfits or created entirely new ones. This system helps manage inventory clutter and provides a way for you to obtain powerful and unique equipment. Experimenting with different transmutations to discover potent combinations can be a gamble if you do it randomly, so use the recipe guides in the game!

A Gothic Steampunk Dreamscape

Visually, Victor Vran boasts a Gothic, steampunk aesthetic with detailed environments. The game features diverse locations such as dark dungeons, haunted castles, and cursed towns, each rendered with atmospheric lighting and intricate textures. The environments are not only visually appealing but also interactive, with destructible objects and dynamic lighting. The visual effects during combat, like explosions and magical attacks, are pretty well executed as well and add to the excitement of battles.

Sonic Warfare: Sound and Music

The game’s sound design is something I particularly enjoyed; it is robust, with a compelling soundtrack that creates an intense atmosphere. Voice acting is solid, particularly the protagonist Victor, whose dialogue adds depth to the character, and is, in my opinion, very well narrated. Sound effects, from the clash of weapons to the roars of monsters, are well-executed and enhance the combat experience. The soundtrack, featuring contributions from the legendary band Motörhead in the “Motörhead Through the Ages” expansion, is unique and energetic, so it is a perfect fit for a demon-themed game.

Conquering Alone or Together

Victor Vran offers both single-player and multiplayer modes. In single-player, you can immerse yourself in the story and explore at your own pace. Multiplayer mode allows for cooperative play with up to four players. The multiplayer experience is well put together, with cooperative mechanics that encourage teamwork and strategic planning. I joined friends to tackle challenging dungeons, face tougher enemies, and discover rare loot together, making the multiplayer aspect a significant enhancement to the game’s replayability. Since the game is old, it does get hard to find players to play with, so you might have to join some groups on Steam or recruit some friends.

Dynamic Challenges and Modes

The game introduces new challenges and mechanics across its levels to keep gameplay fresh. You will encounter a range of enemy types, environmental traps, and unique boss battles that require different strategies and sometimes even load-outs, especially in hard mode. Some levels include areas with dynamic weather effects, which definitely adds value.

Diverse Difficulty Modes for Every Player

Victor Vran offers multiple difficulty modes, including Normal (casual), Hard, and eventually Heroic mode. In Normal mode, you can enjoy the story and gameplay at a comfortable pace, with challenges that gradually increase in difficulty. This mode is ideal for newcomers to action RPGs or those looking for a more casual experience. Hard mode, on the other hand, ramps up the difficulty, presenting tougher enemies, more complex combat scenarios, and harsher penalties for failure. This mode is designed for experienced players seeking a more intense and challenging gameplay experience. The difference in difficulty modes adds replayability, as you can start on Normal and later attempt Hard mode for a more rigorous test of your skills. Note: If you start the game on hard mode, you can still change your mind later and switch back to normal mode; it doesn’t work vice versa, though

Heroic mode is an even tougher difficulty setting available after completing the game once. In this mode, enemies are much stronger, have huge health pools, are more aggressive, and have additional abilities, providing the ultimate challenge for those looking to test their skills to the fullest. I still have to complete the heroic mode myself, so do not expect an easy challenge.

Hard and heroic modes also introduce a unique feature called Hexes, my favorite detail in the game, which are modifiers that add disadvantages, increasing the game’s challenge but also the rewards. For example, the “Hex of Time” speeds up all enemy movements and attacks, requiring quicker reflexes and strategic adjustments from time to time. Other Hexes can increase enemy health, cause more frequent critical hits from foes, or even prevent health regeneration. Note that hexes are random from level to level; you can’t choose which ones apply.

Community and Continued Support

Victor Vran has a community, and even though not too active, it is still worth checking out. Online forums and Steam communities are hubs for players to share tips, strategies, and custom builds. While the game doesn’t feature extensive user-generated content tools, the community contributes to its replayability and longevity in a way.

Since its release, Victor Vran has received several updates and expansions, such as the “Fractured Worlds” and “Motörhead Through the Ages” DLCs. These expansions introduce new content, mechanics, and storylines, significantly adding value to the game. The developer, Haemimont Games, has shown responsiveness to player feedback, continuously refining and expanding the game based on community input, from the release all the way up to the 2019-20 patches.

Accessibility and Integration

Victor Vran includes various accessibility options like remappable controls and scalable UI elements. These features helped me make the game more inclusive, accommodating different play styles and preferences. While it lacks some advanced features, the existing options provide a good level of accessibility for most players, including myself.

Victor Vran integrates well with Steam features like cloud saves, achievements, and trading cards, which is important for me, a Steam nerd. Cloud saves ensure progress is synced across devices, while achievements provide additional goals and challenges, which, as we know, can be very important to some of you as well! Although the game doesn’t have extensive mod support, its inclusion of Steam trading cards and achievements enhances overall player engagement. Steam Workshop support could potentially add even more community-driven content, though it is not currently a feature of the game, and probably won’t be as I believe development has halted.

Rock and Roll Meets Demon Hunting

The Motörhead-themed DLC, “Motörhead Through the Ages,” incorporates the band’s music into the game. This adds a rock-and-roll twist to the game, which I find amusing. The expansion was developed with input from Motörhead’s members, adding authenticity to the themed content.

Not Without Its Flaws

Despite its strengths, Victor Vran does have some flaws. The gameplay can sometimes feel repetitive, especially during extended play sessions. Additionally, while the visuals are generally good, some animations and textures could be more polished. These issues are relatively minor and don’t significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the game, but they are worth noting. Also, I did have some bugs where enemies would not spawn, so I had to restart the map, but yet again, nothing major to be concerned about.

Final Thoughts: A Thrilling Journey

Playing Victor Vran was an interesting experience. The combination of fast-paced combat, deep customization, and a rich, atmospheric world kept me engaged for quite some time, around 32 hours. The game’s cooperative multiplayer mode added another layer of fun, allowing me to play with my friends, which was extremely enjoyable so I urge you to find someone to play with. The possibility of switching between different weapon types and adapting to various combat scenarios and playstyles kept the gameplay dynamic and interesting.

Certain builds can be a bit broken, so my advice is to read some guides on the builds. The hard mode was pretty challenging too, not going to lie, so I am looking forward to the heroic mode! To sum it up, Victor Vran provides a thrilling and immersive action RPG experience with its engaging combat, extensive customization, and atmospheric world. Its community and ongoing developer support enhance its longevity, making it a solid choice For more reviews like this, stay tuned on our page! Game on!

Bridge Project: Engineering Challenges That Stand the Test of Time

A Decade of Bridge Building

Bridge Project hit the scene back in 2013, and it’s stuck around longer than you might expect for a construction sim. If you’re into bridge-building and engineering puzzles, this game’s got a lot to offer. Let’s take a deeper look.

Bridge Project Design Layout

Core Mechanics and Physics

WePlaygames.net Youtube Channel: Bridge Project 2013 Game Trailer

The core gameplay mechanics revolve around designing and constructing bridges capable of withstanding various stress tests. You’ll face challenges from traffic, trains, and even natural disasters while working within budget constraints and material limitations. The physics engine at the heart of the game provides a realistic simulation of structural behavior, giving the game a significant learning curve.

Bridge Project First Level Completed

Challenging Progression

One of Bridge Project’s strengths lies in its difficult progression. You’ll start with relatively simple structures, allowing you to grasp basic concepts. As levels progress, the complexity ramps up significantly, introducing multi-span bridges, challenging terrains, and intricate design requirements. This gradual increase in difficulty keeps the game engaging over its many levels, constantly pushing you to refine your skills and approach problems from new angles.

Visual and Audio Experience

The visual presentation of the Bridge Project, although clunky, is still functional. While it won’t win any awards for cutting-edge graphics in 2024, the game’s visuals serve their purpose effectively. You’ll encounter diverse environments, ranging from urban settings to rural landscapes. The real visual strength lies in the dynamic stress visualizations. Watching a bridge visibly strain under the weight, with materials bending and flexing, provides immediate feedback on your design’s effectiveness.

The sound design of the Bridge Project is understated but impactful. The creaking of materials under stress and the rumble of vehicles crossing bridges add tension to the testing phase. While the background music is minimal, this focus on ambient and effective sounds contributes to the overall experience.

Design Variety and Standout Levels

The game shines in its level of design variety. You’ll encounter a wide range of bridge types, including suspension bridges, drawbridges, and arch bridges. Each type requires unique construction techniques and problem-solving approaches. Standout levels include those with obstacles like ships requiring movable bridge sections or complex terrains demanding innovative solutions.

Community and User-Generated Content

Bridge Project’s longevity is significantly enhanced by its active community and user-generated content. The integration with Steam Workshop allows you to share your designs and download others’ creations. This feature extends the game’s replayability and fosters a collaborative environment where you can learn from others’ approaches and showcase your engineering creativity.

Developer Support and Updates

Developer support for the Bridge Project has been commendable over the years. Since its release, the game has received several updates addressing bugs, introducing new features, and refining gameplay mechanics. This ongoing support has helped the game remain relevant and enjoyable for new and returning players.

Accessibility and Steam Integration

In terms of accessibility, Bridge Project offers a range of options to tailor your gaming experience. These include adjustable graphics settings and simple control schemes, making it easier for players to find a setup that suits their preferences. The game also integrates well with Steam features, including cloud saves, achievements, and trading cards. Cloud saves are particularly useful for a game of this nature, allowing you to seamlessly continue your progress across different devices. The achievement system provides additional goals and challenges, adding another layer of engagement if you’re a completionist.

Warning: Cloud saves might get corrupted, so I advise manual progress saving in case you switch machines.

Bridge Project Piston Bridge

Educational Value

Bridge Project’s educational value is a notable aspect. While not explicitly marketed as an educational tool, the game provides practical insights into basic engineering principles. You’ll gain an intuitive understanding of concepts like load distribution, material strength, and structural integrity through hands-on experimentation. This blend of entertainment and education adds depth to the gaming experience.

Aging Aspects

The game’s age is shown in certain aspects of its design. The controls can sometimes feel clunky, particularly when precisely placing bridge elements. The visual smoothness and overall polish fall short of what you might expect from more modern titles.

Replayability and Optimization

Replayability in Bridge Project is high, thanks to various levels and the challenge of optimizing designs. While each puzzle has a specific intended solution, you can experiment with different approaches to achieve more efficient or aesthetically pleasing results. The ability to track completion times for each puzzle adds a competitive element if you’re inclined to speed-solve.

LYNE: Minimalist Puzzles, Maximum Brain Teasers Now on Weekend Sale!

Od: Cyberez

Title: LYNE
Type of Game: Puzzle
Developer: Thomas Bowker
Publisher: Thomas Bowker
Released: February 13, 2014
Platforms Available: PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android
Platform Reviewed: PC
Level of Maturity: Everyone
Reading Time: 6 minutes

The Basics

LYNE, developed and published by Thomas Bowker, is a straightforward puzzle game available on iOS, Android, and PC. Released in 2014, it’s carved out a nice niche in the puzzle genre. The game has gained a steady following over the years, with over 500,000 downloads across platforms. Now you can even buy on Steam it for just a “penny” $1.19 until 22nd of July 2024 down from usual $2.99.

The core gameplay involves connecting shapes on a grid to complete geometric patterns. You must link all shapes of the same type without crossing paths or leaving any unconnected. LYNE gradually introduces more complex puzzles across hundreds of levels – over 650 in the base game, with additional level packs available. The difficulty progression is well-paced, adding new mechanics and constraints as you advance without becoming overwhelming.

Puzzle Evolution

LYNE’s puzzle types evolve as you progress through the game.
The basic puzzle elements include:

  • Shapes: Starting with simple squares, triangles, and circles, later levels introduce more complex shapes like hexagons, stars, and custom polygons.
  • Connectors: These are points that must be passed through a specific number of times, adding an extra layer of complexity.
  • Blockers: Obstacles that cannot be crossed, forcing you to plan your paths carefully.

The game’s level progression can be broken down into several phases:

  1. Introduction (Levels 1-50): Learn basic mechanics and simple shape connections.
  2. Basic Challenges (Levels 51-150): Introduction of multiple shape types and simple connectors.
  3. Intermediate Puzzles (Levels 151-300): More complex grid layouts and the introduction of blockers.
  4. Advanced Challenges (Levels 301-500): Combination of all elements, with intricate patterns and multiple connectors.
  5. Expert Levels (Levels 501-650+): Highly complex puzzles that require strategic thinking and often multiple attempts to solve.

Notable puzzle types include:

  • “Interlocking” puzzles: Where paths of different shapes must be carefully woven together without crossing.
  • “Constrained path” puzzles: Where blockers severely limit possible routes, requiring precise planning.
  • “Multi-connector” puzzles: Featuring several connectors that must be used in a specific order or number of times.
  • “Shape isolation” puzzles: Where certain shapes must be connected in a way that isolates them from others.

Aesthetics and Atmosphere

Visually, LYNE embraces minimalism. Its clean lines and subtle color palette create a focused atmosphere that complements the puzzle-solving experience. The game uses a limited color scheme, typically featuring 3-4 colors per puzzle. The ambient soundtrack, composed by Stafford Bawler, and minimal sound effects contribute to a calm gaming environment.

Gameplay Experience

As a single-player game, LYNE allows you to engage with puzzles at your own pace. There’s no time limit on solving puzzles, encouraging thoughtful play. The game keeps things interesting by introducing various shapes (squares, triangles, circles, and more complex polygons), grid sizes (ranging from 3×3 to 7×7 and beyond), and rules like connectors that must be used a specific number of times. Some standout levels feature intricate patterns or constrained grids that require careful planning.

Community and Engagement

While primarily a solo player experience, LYNE has cultivated a community where players share strategies and solutions online. Platforms like Reddit and Steam forums host discussions about optimal solving techniques. This player engagement adds value to the game, providing support and inspiration for those looking to master its challenges.

Updates and Maintenance

Since release, LYNE has received periodic updates addressing bugs and occasionally adding new puzzle sets. The developer has shown responsiveness to player feedback, maintaining the game’s stability and platform compatibility. Major updates have included new level packs, each containing around 25 additional puzzles.

Accessibility and Controls

In terms of accessibility, LYNE offers basic options like color settings and intuitive controls. However, more comprehensive features such as colorblind modes or extensive control customization are lacking. The game supports touch, mouse, and keyboard controls depending on the platform.

Steam Features

On Steam, LYNE integrates well with features like cloud saves and trading cards. The game offers 16 trading cards and 28 achievements. The achievement system is notably creative, allowing players to use achievements as customizable letters for Steam profiles. This unique feature has made LYNE an amazing game for Steam profile customization, becoming extremely popular among achievement hunters and profile customization enthusiasts. Many players purchase and complete LYNE specifically for this feature, as it provides a versatile and visually appealing way to personalize their Steam profiles. This added value significantly extends beyond the core puzzle gameplay, giving LYNE a special place in the Steam community.

Replayability and Value

Regarding replayability, LYNE doesn’t offer randomized puzzles or multiple solutions to levels. Each puzzle has a specific, intended solution. While this ensures a consistent challenge, it may limit long-term replay value for some players. The game does track completion time for each puzzle, allowing players to compete for faster solve times if desired.

Price-wise, LYNE typically retails for for nice $2.99 USD on most platforms, with occasional sales bringing it lower like this very moment of writing this article. Given the base game’s 650+ puzzles and potential for 20+ hours of gameplay, it represents good value for puzzle enthusiasts.

Platform Considerations

On mobile devices, particularly smartphones, the touch controls can sometimes pose a challenge on smaller screens. While generally responsive, selecting specific shapes in densely packed puzzles may require precise finger placement. This isn’t an issue on larger tablets or the PC version with mouse control.

LYNE’s file size is relatively small, typically under 100 MB, making it an easy download even on devices with limited storage. The game’s low system requirements also mean it runs smoothly on a wide range of hardware, from older smartphones to modern PCs.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, LYNE offers a solid puzzle experience through its minimalist design and challenging levels. Its variety in puzzles and engaged player community contribute to its appeal, despite being primarily single-player. While there’s room for improvement in areas like accessibility and replayability, LYNE remains a worthwhile choice for puzzle enthusiasts seeking a refined, no-frills gameplay experience that offers hundreds of levels at an affordable price point.

LIMBO : A Dark Journey Into a Mysterious World

Od: Cyberez

Title: LIMBO
Developer: Playdead
Publisher: Playdead
Released: August 2, 2011
Platforms Available: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, iOS, Android
Platform Reviewed: PlayStation 4
Mature Content: T (Teen), Mild Blood, Mild Violence

Truth to be told, I didn’t expect much when I started LIMBO. I just wanted something different from the usual games I play, and at the time, it was gaining popularity, so I gave it a shot. Right from the beginning, I was hooked. The game throws you into this dark, shaded world without instructions or context. You’re just this little boy or, better said, the shadow of a boy, waking up in a forest, and you start moving because there’s nothing else to do and no indications of what to do.

Atmosphere

The game is eerily quiet, with only ambient and occasional creepy noises. It’s incredibly atmospheric without trying too hard; it is hard to explain, and you must feel it for yourself.

Gameplay

Now, for the fun part, I died a lot. LIMBO isn’t forgiving at all. The puzzles in LIMBO are clever but not overly complex. They will make you think without making you feel stupid. I remember this section with rotating platforms and gravity changes with reverse spikes on the sides. It took me a while to figure it out, but not to the level where you would get frustrated or need a guide. Just a perfect amount of head-scratching!

Story

There’s no dialogue or straightforward story in LIMBO. You’re left to piece things together on your own. The game leaves a lot to your imagination, which I absolutely loved! I looked up some stuff about the game after finishing it. LIMBO was made by a small Danish studio, Playdead, and they worked on it for over six years. That kind of dedication shows in the game’s polish and attention to detail. It was released in 2010 and quickly became a hit, winning several awards.

Controls

One thing that bugged me a bit was the controls. They could be a bit stiff at times, leading to some uncalled-for deaths. But these moments were rare and didn’t ruin my overall experience.

Ending

The ending of LIMBO is abrupt and ambiguous. It doesn’t wrap things up neatly, which might annoy some players, but considering how it starts, it is a fitting end. The whole game is mysterious, so a clear-cut ending wouldn’t have felt right. It leaves you thinking about what it all meant.

LIMBO Climbing

Conclusion:

LIMBO isn’t a long game, but it sticks with you… If you want something unique, refreshing, and somewhat relaxing, try LIMBO. Just be prepared to die a lot.
