WhatsApp usernames could come with an innovative twist

  • WhatsApp is still actively working on implementing support for usernames as an alternative to sharing phone numbers.
  • The messaging app may let users optionally set PINs to prevent anyone with their usernames from contacting them.
  • Users will likely get to choose whether newly initiated chats display their phone numbers or usernames to the other parties.

WhatsApp has been working on supporting usernames for months. The messaging app could soon allow users to opt for unique handles to reach others without sharing their phone numbers. A new WhatsApp beta build has now revealed that the company may also let users set PINs to limit spam and unwanted interactions.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.18.2 references PIN support when setting up a username. If the feature comes to fruition, you will be able to select a PIN as an optional safety measure. This way, those with your WhatsApp username will still need the chosen digits to initiate a chat with you.

This feature could make it challenging for spammers and other bad actors to contact you, as you will always be able to change your PIN if someone posts it publicly. WhatsApp may also let you turn off the PIN altogether if you want to make your profile more easily accessible.

Beyond PINs, WhatsApp will likely let users choose whether new chats reveal their usernames or phone numbers. By opting for the former identification method, users can conceal their phone numbers completely, making WhatsApp a more private messenger.

Keep in mind that WhatsApp usernames and PINs are still under development, and these features are unavailable to beta testers yet. As a result, there’s no telling when and if the company will roll them out to its users.

WhatsApp is developing two features to help declutter your inbox

  • WhatsApp is testing a simplified like reaction for status updates that appears in the viewers’ list rather than the primary inbox.
  • The company is also developing a feature that automatically blocks unknown senders when their messages exceed a certain limit.
  • These two features could potentially roll out to all users in the coming months.

WhatsApp is arguably the most popular messaging app, connecting billions of users around the globe. Naturally, many bad actors rely on the platform to spam others for a number of reasons. To help users keep their inbox under control, WhatsApp is working on at least two new features that should reduce unnecessary interruptions.

The first feature is a new like reaction for status updates. According to WABetaInfo, the company is rolling out the addition to some Android users running version 2.24.17.21 beta. When enabled, users’ status likes will appear in the viewers’ list instead of being sent to the primary inbox as a heart emoji. Users will also get to turn off these reaction notifications optionally, as many don’t consider them time-sensitive alerts.

Meanwhile, the second feature could automatically block spammers when their messages reach a certain volume. The leaker emphasizes that this tool is still under development, and it’s seemingly unavailable to any public beta testers for now. If WhatsApp proceeds with implementing it and you enable the relevant toggle, your inbox should block certain spammers on its own.

Given that the first feature is in beta and the second is still under development, it could take WhatsApp months to roll them out to all users. That’s assuming it doesn’t axe them altogether. Nevertheless, these additions should help users maintain their inbox more easily — whenever WhatsApp decides to release them.

Here are all the AirPods models that could debut next month

  • Apple is reportedly still on track to reveal three distinct AirPods models this fall, potentially during the iPhone 16 launch event.
  • The company could retire the AirPods 2 and 3 by introducing two variants of the AirPods 4 that cater to different budgets.
  • Apple may also refresh the AirPods Max and retire the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C one.

We’re likely just a few weeks away from Apple’s next media event. On September 10, the Cupertino firm is expected to reveal the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. That may not be all, however. During the same keynote, the iPhone maker could also debut three new AirPods models, including the highly anticipated AirPods 4.

According to the latest Bloomberg Power On newsletter, Apple is still on track to release two AirPods 4 variants this fall. The entry-level edition will likely replace the AirPods 2 as an affordable option, while the higher-end model could be the AirPods 3’s substitute. It’s currently unclear if the cheaper version will be dubbed AirPods SE, AirPods 4 Lite, or something completely different.

In terms of functionality, the higher-end AirPods 4 model is expected to feature active noise cancelation, which is currently exclusive to the Pro and Max editions. Otherwise, both AirPods 4 variants will likely drop the Lightning port and adopt USB-C for charging.

Speaking of USB-C, the AirPods Max 2 could also make an appearance during the same event. Though, beyond switching to the universal charging port and generic enhancements, the premium headphones are expected to remain largely the same.

Otherwise, those anticipating the AirPods Pro 3 will likely have to wait till next year, as we’re only expecting the AirPods Max 2 and two AirPods 4 variants this time around.

iOS 18’s latest feature lets you Thanos-snap ads and cookie popups, but there’s a catch

  • iOS 18 beta 5 introduces Distraction Control, a feature that lets Safari users hide static web elements, like newsletter banners.
  • As long as the selected web element is static, it’ll remain hidden indefinitely.
  • Due to ads’ dynamic nature, they’ll automatically reappear whenever the web page reloads.

iOS 18 beta 5 is now available to enrolled developers, featuring a new Distraction Control option in Safari. Through this fresh addition, users can hide static web elements, such as cookie popups, newsletter banners, and more. While you can technically use Distraction Control on iOS to block web ads, there’s a major limitation barring it from becoming a practical solution.

When hitting the new Hide Distracting Items button in Safari, an alert reads: “Hiding distracting items will not permanently remove ads and other content that update frequently.” This highlights that the feature isn’t designed to block ads on websites. Instead, it’s meant for static banners that don’t continuously refresh.

Apple could spice up the next Mac upgrade with more than just an M4 chip

  • Apple will reportedly start incorporating the M4 chip into its Mac line later this year, starting with the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini.
  • The MacBook Air, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio could get the M4 chip bump next year.
  • Beyond the M4 upgrade, at least one Mac is expected to pack significant modifications.

Apple first revealed its M4 chip when it launched the iPad Pro (2024) earlier this year. Logically, the company plans to bring its latest processor to the Mac line, which is currently powered by its predecessor. The shift from M3 to M4 will reportedly start this year, and beyond the chip bump, at least one Mac model is expected to feature dramatic changes.

According to Bloomberg Power On’s subscriber edition, Apple will introduce M4-powered iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini computers in 2024. Interestingly, at least one of these machines is expected to include some significant modifications — apart from the M4 chip. Apple could then resume its M4 Mac overhaul next year by refreshing the MacBook Air, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio. The newsletter states:

Apple Watch SE 3 could appeal to kids with a core material change

  • The Apple Watch SE 3 will reportedly feature a rigid plastic exterior, which could potentially lower its price.
  • The shift away from aluminum could also enable Apple to offer more vibrant colors, making it more appealing for kids.

Apple has been offering SE variants of its iconic smartwatch for years, catering to those with limited budgets and needs. Despite technically being the budget option, though, the current SE model starts at $249. That’s significantly more expensive than some of the affordable Wear OS rivals. To potentially cut its price, the Apple Watch SE 3 may retire the more costly aluminum build and opt for a cheaper plastic one.

According to Bloomberg Power On’s subscriber edition, the upcoming Apple Watch SE could replace the aluminum chassis with a rigid plastic one. This could help Apple drop its price and offer more distinct finishes. The newsletter reads:

Apple Intelligence is falling for phishing emails, and that could cost iPhone users

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority
  • Apple Intelligence is marking phishing emails as a priority in the Mail app on iOS 18.1 developer beta 1.
  • The AI-powered filter seemingly disregards the sender’s address and only determines an email’s importance by scanning its text.
  • Apple must address this severe flaw before iOS 18.1’s public release, as it could make average users fall for more scams.

Apple Intelligence is arguably iOS 18’s most significant highlight, baking native AI features into the OS. While the technology likely won’t debut publicly until October, the company has already given iOS 18.1 beta testers an early look. One of its perks is AI summaries in the Mail app. Through this handy Apple Intelligence feature, users can save time, determine emails’ importance at a glance, get locked out of their accounts, and possibly lose considerable sums of money.

Yes, you’ve read that right. Apple Intelligence, indeed, can’t differentiate between phishing and legitimate emails. According to multiple Reddit users, the AI-powered filter in the Mail app is marking scam emails as a priority. This suggests that the technology categorizes emails based only on their texts, disregarding the senders’ addresses and other relevant signals.

Here’s when the iPhone 16 could launch, following Apple Intelligence’s delay

  • Apple Intelligence features won’t be included in iOS 18.0, and interested users will have to wait for iOS 18.1’s debut.
  • While support for Apple Intelligence could be one of the iPhone 16’s main selling points, its release likely won’t be delayed.
  • If Apple follows its usual schedule, it could launch the iPhone 16 series on September 10, then roll out the AI features in October.

In recent years, smartphone hardware upgrades have been incremental — for the most part, at least. This has pushed some manufacturers to develop exclusive software features for their latest products, enticing customers to upgrade more frequently. The iPhone’s case is no different. Apple Intelligence is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, which will likely make it an iPhone 16 key selling point. Though, given that the highly anticipated AI features have been delayed till October, will Apple still launch the iPhone 16 in September? Here’s what the rumors indicate.

According to Bloomberg, Apple will stick to its tradition and launch the iPhone 16 in September. Since the company typically introduces its flagship smartphones on a Tuesday towards the middle of the month, the publication suggests that the announcement could take place on September 10. The report states:

AI summaries in Apple Mail put Gmail to absolute shame

Apple Mail has long been the ugly duckling of email clients. While the app technically works, it’s pretty barebones in terms of functionality. Despite the latest iOS 18 beta not addressing all of its shortcomings, it does make using the client more desirable on iPhone 15 Pro models. With iOS 18.1, the iPhone maker has baked Apple Intelligence into the Mail app, enabling AI summaries, priority detection, and more. Some of these features have also made it to the Messages app, such as the newly-added smart replies. Sure, Apple Mail still has a long way to go, but boy, do these AI enhancements make my everyday life easier and give Google’s Gmail a run for its money.

It all starts before you even launch the app

What I love about Apple Intelligence on iOS 18.1 beta 1 is that it works from the moment you receive an email or text. The technology analyzes the notifications’ content to display summaries on the lock screen. So, instead of previewing the first two lines of an email, the notification now shows a handier, AI-generated summary of the entire message. We’ve gone from “Hi, I hope this email finds you well” to “The sender is inquiring about your availability tomorrow” in the notification center. It’s pretty neat if you ask me.

I tried to replace Grammarly with Apple Intelligence, here’s how it went

I’m in a love-hate relationship with Grammarly. So, when Apple Intelligence was previewed at WWDC24, I hoped the native, OS-level Writing Tools would replace my current third-party solution. Fast forward to earlier this week, Apple finally granted beta testers access to some of its upcoming AI features. Naturally, I rushed to put them to the test, and I’ve now come to some relevant conclusions. While Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools shine in some ways, Grammarly will remain installed on my MacBook Air for the time being.

Apple Intelligence vs Grammarly: Availability

Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 15 Pro models, along with M-powered iPads and Macs. To access the new Writing Tools feature, you must install the first beta of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1, then get past Apple Intelligence’s waitlist. The wait wasn’t long for me, and once the artificial smarts became active on my device, I could use Writing Tools with any selectable text across the system for free — even when I’m offline.

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Conversely, Grammarly is a cross-platform service available on most operating systems as a standalone app and browser extension. While the basic spelling and grammar checks are free, some more advanced features, like writing tone adjustments, require a monthly subscription. Notably, Grammarly is a cloud-based software that processes your data using the company’s servers and doesn’t work without an internet connection.

I tried Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools on my iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and the feature works similarly across all devices. So, while I’ll be documenting my experience using it on my primary work machine, a MacBook Air M2, you can expect to encounter the same strengths and weaknesses on iPhones and iPads.

Apple’s Writing Tools: First impressions

Apple Intelligence Writing Tools menu

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority

In typical Apple fashion, the Writing Tools feature lives in a sleek menu that users can access when selecting text. The user interface is minimalistic, modern-looking, and unintrusive. Through Writing Tools, AI can proofread, rewrite, summarize, create key points, generate a table or list, and adjust the text’s tone to become friendly, professional, or concise. Beyond smart replies in the Mail and Messages apps, Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools, unlike Grammarly, can’t generate text from scratch based on user prompts.

Once Apple Intelligence performs the requested action, the revised text will appear in a floating bubble. You can then copy the entire result, have it replace the original text, or select parts of it. While it’s generally intuitive to operate, I found it challenging to spot the changes it has applied due to the lack of visual cues in Safari. Some apps like Notes and Messages highlight the applied edits, so Safari could potentially follow suit in a future OS beta.

For reference, Grammarly proactively scans the text and highlights errors, which you can individually address or ignore. Apple Intelligence goes for an all-or-none approach, designed to replace all your (selected) text instead of letting you go through the mistakes or suggested tweaks separately.

Apple Intelligence vs Grammarly: My personal use case

Grammarly scanning a note and detecting errors

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority

How useful a software is to you will primarily depend on your workflow and expectations. In my case, I only rely on Grammarly to fix typos, detect potential language errors, and rephrase some awkwardly worded sentences in my articles. I don’t really care about tone monitoring or adjustments, as my writing style differs depending on the article’s theme. I prefer maintaining my own freestyle tone, which I believe makes my work more personal and unique.

I attempted to utilize Apple Intelligence’s rewriting feature to rectify some awkwardly phrased sentences. In contrast to Grammarly, the tone of the rewritten text generally appeared too robotic and evidently AI-generated, in my opinion. I could discern that a human had not authored the sentences. Furthermore, Grammarly automatically identifies lengthy sentences and proposes smoother transitions, eliminating the requirement for manual selection and correction. To illustrate Apple Intelligence’s rewriting capabilities, the paragraph you are currently reading was processed using this feature. No human or Grammarly edits were made subsequently.

So, as you may have noticed, the paragraph above sounds too unnatural. It may be grammatical and understandable, but it’s clearly not humanmade. Consequently, Apple Intelligence still can’t replace Grammarly for rephrasing bloated sentences and suggesting smoother flows in my articles.

Apple's suggestions are an all-or-nothing affair, and having to proofread Apple's proofread version defeats this tool's entire purpose.

As for fixing typos and language errors, I’d be okay without proactive text scanning if Apple would at least highlight the changes its AI has made when typing in Safari. These text tools are far from perfect, and I’ll never unquestioningly accept their submissions. Having to proofread Apple’s proofread version of my article defeats the entire purpose of the assistant. Visual indicators would spare me the need to reread the whole text by letting me review the individual tweaks only and apply them where needed — just like Grammarly works.

So, until then, I’m unfortunately stuck with Grammarly, as I type my articles directly in WordPress.

Other Writing Tools options

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority

While I only need Writing Tools for proofreading and rewriting certain sentences in my articles, this Apple Intelligence offering features other handy options. For example, you can summarize any text on the web or have the AI list its key points. Similarly, it can neatly arrange the text in a table or as a list, which can make analyzing data easier. Otherwise, beyond neutrally rephrasing your text, Writing Tools can make the tone more friendly, professional, or concise, and I’ll include samples below.

Friendly:

Here’s a friendly tone sample from Apple Intelligence. I haven’t used this mode much because it doesn’t quite match my job or work style. But it can be useful when you’re texting people and you’re worried your tone might come across as too serious.

Professional:

Currently, we are adopting the professional tone sample provided by Apple Intelligence. Similarly, I have not extensively utilized this mode, as I generally possess the ability to maintain a professional tone when necessary, such as when communicating with colleagues. Otherwise, I tend to adopt an informal tone in everyday matters, as life is too short to take everything excessively seriously.

Concise:

Lastly, Apple Intelligence’s concise tone sample doesn’t fit my workflow, so I haven’t used it. Grammarly also supports a similar text tone feature, but I haven’t used it either. They’re useful, but not for me.

Apple Intelligence making the note's tone professional

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority

Apple Intelligence’s respective tone modifiers generated the three short paragraphs above, and I made no edits afterward. I personally think they sound more natural than the robotic rewriting option I previewed earlier in this article. The friendly sample is pretty casual, the professional one sounds corporatesque enough, and the concise version successfully trimmed the fluff I had included in my original paragraph without losing the meaning.

Apple Intelligence has some potential

Apple Intelligence proofreading a note

Credit: Mahmoud Itani / Android Authority

While the highlights and rephrased sentences push me to stick to Grammarly for now, Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools may change that with future updates. I dislike how persistent Grammarly can be, suggesting the same edits over and over after I dismiss them for not matching my style. While it’s certainly effective, it feels too intrusive, stubborn, and a bit in the way.

On the other hand, Apple’s Writing Tools menu is less flashy and distracting, as it only pops up when summoned by the user. More importantly, though, it continues to work even if you’re not connected to the internet. However, until Apple implements the visual indicators mentioned above in Safari, using Writing Tools to proofread my work isn’t feasible.

Fortunately, we’re still testing the very first beta of the software, and the tech overlord will likely make many improvements before the stable release debuts to the public in October. Will Apple save me from my toxic relationship with Grammarly by this fall? Stay tuned.

Apple is holding back no punches with its AI partnerships for iOS 18

  • Apple is reportedly considering integrating more generative AI services, including Meta AI, Perplexity, and Anthropic, into iOS 18.
  • The company could also be looking into AI services permitted in China, as OpenAI’s ChatGPT is banned there.
  • Apple’s new AI features will roll out to compatible iPhones, iPads, and Macs this fall through the upcoming OS updates.

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple is integrating ChatGPT into its latest devices. While the company has developed its own Apple Intelligence features, users will get to rely on OpenAI’s smarts when the first-party ones are insufficient. However, Apple won’t stop there; it’s reportedly considering more AI partnerships with companies like Meta, Perplexity, and Anthropic.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has been discussing potential AI partnerships with Meta, Perplexity, and Anthropic. Additionally, the firm is trying to find an OpenAI alternative for its China-based users, as ChatGPT is banned there. If any of these potential partnerships materialize, iOS 18 users could have more AI provider options — beyond ChatGPT and Apple’s own model.

Surprise, surprise: Apple’s App Store changes continue to really bother the EU

Apple Logo Apple Store BKC 2
Credit: Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority
  • The EU Commission has notified Apple about its preliminary findings, which indicate it has breached the Digital Markets Act (DMA) with its anti-steering rules.
  • The EU Commission has also opened new investigations to determine whether Apple’s Core Technology Fee (CTF) complies with the DMA.
  • If the preliminary findings are confirmed, the EU could charge Apple up to 10% of its annual global revenue.

Earlier this year, Apple rolled out an iOS update with EU-exclusive features to comply with the DMA. These include support for third-party app stores and allowing developers to reference in-app digital services that users can buy from external websites. Now that the EU Commission has investigated some of Apple’s changes, its preliminary findings indicate that the iPhone maker has breached the DMA.

The EU Commission announced today that Apple’s new iPhone rules continue to prevent developers from steering users to external websites, which violates its DMA. For reference, Apple now allows app developers to link to digital purchases beyond its own IAP system. However, the company still restricts how developers implement the links in their apps, such as prohibiting them from listing their pricing.

iPhones and iPads will soon give you one less reason to use your Mac

  • The first betas of iOS and iPadOS 18 include a new option in the Files app that allows users to reformat external drives when erasing them.
  • Beta testers can currently pick between the APFS, ExFAT, and MS-DOS (FAT) formats, which serve different purposes.
  • Picking the APFS format allows users to encrypt the external drive using a password of their choice and opt for case sensitivity.

Apple has been gradually boosting its latest iPhones and iPads by introducing fresh power-user features with every annual OS update, and this year is no different. The first betas of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 pack a new functionality that allows testers to reformat external drives when erasing them.

The ability to erase connected external drives using the Files app on iPhones and iPads has existed for a while. As Kaleb Cadle discovered, though, iOS and iPadOS 18 upgrade this feature by allowing users to pick between three formats instead of being limited to a default one.

iOS 18 lets you tune your AirPods Pro 2’s noise cancellation even better

Credit: Lily Katz / Android Authority

  • Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 will allow users to customize the Adaptive Audio mode on iOS 18 by choosing how much noise gets suppressed.
  • Those currently testing iOS 18 must update their AirPods Pro 2 to the respective beta firmware to try the new feature.
  • We advise you not to install beta firmware on your AirPods, as you won’t be able to roll back to the stable version if you find the experience unreliable.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 are arguably the best wireless earbuds for iPhone users, offering a seamless integration with iOS and many neat features. These include an Adaptive Audio option that blends the Transparency and Noise Cancellation modes. So, those using it can hear human voices but not unwanted, loud noises. With iOS 18, Apple is giving the Adaptive Audio mode a welcome upgrade, allowing users to control how much noise it cancels.

As highlighted by MacRumors, the AirPods Pro 2’s Adaptive Audio mode has become more customizable on iOS 18. Those running the latest beta firmware versions on their iPhones and AirPods will find a new option in the Settings app. Through a dedicated slider, users can allow more or less noise to pass through when using the Adaptive Audio mode.

While the upgraded Adaptive Audio mode is certainly handy, we advise you not to install the beta firmware on your AirPods Pro 2. After all, AirPods, unlike iPhones, can’t easily be downgraded to the stable version. So, if you encounter serious bugs or battery drain while running the beta, you may have to deal with it until the final release launches this fall.

It’s worth noting that the new Adaptive Audio mode is also supported on iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. So, if you’re using your AirPods Pro 2 with a different Apple device, you’ll still be able to customize the aforementioned feature.

YouTube Music brings design parity with a refreshed album and playlist UI

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

  • YouTube Music has released a fresh layout for albums and playlists on its web app, better suited to large screens.
  • The service first adopted the new UI on Android tablets, but it’s seemingly still unavailable on iPadOS.
  • The update appears to be rolling out gradually, so it may take some time to reflect on your end.

YouTube Music is one of the most popular platforms for streaming your favorite tunes. Bundled with YouTube Premium, the service offers an extensive catalog, including unofficial covers and unreleased tracks you may not find elsewhere. However, its desktop UI was too basic for the longest time, mimicking a mobile design on large screens. Fortunately, the company has finally addressed this by optimizing YouTube Music’s web layout — particularly when viewing albums and playlists.

YouTube Music album redesign on the web

Credit: 9to5Google

As per a 9to5Google report, YouTube Music is rolling out a redesigned, two-column UI for albums and playlists on the web. The first column highlights the album art, year, and description, in addition to handy buttons like play, download, share, and more. The second column, on the other hand, lists the included tracks, along with their play count, duration, and artist.

YouTube Music's old design for albums on the web

Credit: 9to5Google

Before this update, YouTube Music on the web would cram the first column’s content at the top of the screen, followed by the second column’s song list. That wasted desktops’ screen real estate, as the margins were too broad and unutilized. The new UI takes better advantage of wider displays by condensing more information in the same view.

YouTube Music first adopted this optimized album and playlist UI on Android tablets (but not iPadOS). While the company has already started rolling it out to desktop users, it’s not yet available to everyone. If it hasn’t appeared on your end, you could try clearing the website’s cache.

This demo of Apple’s iPhone Mirroring feature shows it’s ahead of Android

macOS Sequoia on MacBook Air M2

  • A user has activated the unreleased iPhone Mirroring feature that is coming soon to macOS Sequoia.
  • Apple’s iPhone Mirroring execution in the screen recording appears to be much smoother than its Android-Windows counterpart.
  • There’s currently no easy way to enable Apple’s feature, but those running the iOS and macOS betas can expect an official debut in the near future.

Arguably, macOS Sequoia’s most significant feature is iPhone Mirroring. Through this upcoming Apple ecosystem integration, users will be able to control their iOS devices directly from their Macs. While macOS Sequoia beta 1 doesn’t officially offer this feature, a user has managed to enable it forcibly. Based on the brief screen recording they shared, Apple’s iPhone Mirroring appears to be much more polished than the Phone Link feature tying Android and Windows.

As shown in the video embedded above, Twitter user Xezrunner has managed to enable and use iPhone Mirroring on iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The mirroring in the demo seems to be instantaneous, with virtually no lag or glitches. The user swiftly launched, navigated through, and exited a mirrored iOS app — reflecting a natural, intuitive user experience.

Screenshot of tweet about iPhone Mirroring feature

User Albacore, who helped enable the feature, states that there’s currently no easy way to activate iPhone Mirroring on macOS Sequoia beta 1. Consequently, users may have to wait until Apple officially enables it in a future beta build. Nevertheless, the fact that an unreleased feature on a first developer beta seems to be working seamlessly only highlights how well-developed it is. The second OS betas, which could potentially enable this feature for all testers, are expected next week.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 kicks off in just a few days. From June 10 to June 14, the Cupertino firm will make developer-centric announcements and reveal its upcoming operating system versions, like iOS 18 and macOS 15. If you’re wondering what exactly Apple will announce during WWDC 2024 and how to watch the main keynote live, you’ve come to the right place.

Apple blocks PC emulators from all iOS app stores, raising concerns over control

  • Apple’s app review team has rejected a PC emulator because Windows computers technically do not meet the retro game console criteria.
  • Beyond banning it from its own marketplace, Apple has also refused to notarize the PC emulator for third-party app store compatibility.
  • This raises concerns over Apple’s control and how iOS app developers can’t necessarily resort to third-party app stores to circumvent the company’s unforgiving guidelines.

Through a recent iOS update, Apple unlocked third-party app stores in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This has enabled developers to upload apps that don’t necessarily comply with Apple’s strict App Store guidelines to these third-party digital storefronts. Apple, however, still needs to notarize submitted apps to ensure that they pose no risk to iOS or its users. Shockingly, Apple has blocked harmless PC emulator apps from reaching its storefront and won’t notarize them for third-party app store distribution, either.

Should I install the iOS beta version on my iPhone?

The latest iPhones are some of the best phones available on the market. Not only do they offer a premium fit and finish, but they will also receive OS updates for many years to come. With the new iOS 18, Apple promises to make the iPhone better than ever. However, sitting around waiting for its public release in the fall is no fun. If you're eager to try out some of the new features right now, you can install the latest iOS 18 beta to get a taste.

iPadOS 18: Everything you need to know

Last fall, iPadOS 17 launched on the latest iPad models. It introduced features like an overhauled, customizable lock screen, dedicated Health app, communication upgrades, and much more. Despite all of this, this operating system is still relatively lacking in terms of power user features, especially since Apple has marketed this device as a laptop replacement. The upcoming iPadOS 18 introduces new features, with the first beta expected in July and a stable release set to follow this fall. Here's everything you need to know about what's coming to iPadOS 18.

iOS makes it more difficult to control the volume when casting media

Apple Music Library stock photo

  • A recent iOS update stops users from relying on their iPhone’s physical buttons to control the volume of media they’re casting to other devices.
  • The change has sparked outrage on online forums, especially among users actively using the Spotify Connect feature.
  • Interestingly, the Apple Music and TV Remote apps still offer the aforementioned volume privilege that third-party apps had to drop.

It’s no secret that Apple sometimes disadvantages third-party developers by giving itself special privileges — or taking away some of their existing ones. Following a recent iOS update, likely iOS 17.4, users casting media to other devices can no longer control the volume using their iPhone’s physical buttons. This has sparked outrage on Reddit and the Spotify Community forums, as many users actively relied on the now-removed option.

According to a Spotify Community moderator, a recent iOS change has stopped the music streaming app from using the iPhone’s volume buttons to control Spotify Connect devices. They stated: “Due to updates on iOS, Spotify users no longer can use their iPhone’s volume controls to change the volume on connected speakers. Instead, please use the volume slider in the device menu.”

TIL that knockoff wired iPhone earbuds require Bluetooth to work :/

  • Certain companies are selling knockoff variants of Apple’s wired Lightning earbuds that require a Bluetooth connection to work.
  • These manufacturers save some money by avoiding Apple’s standards and not relying on the Lightning connection to transmit audio.
  • The wired connection draws power from the connected iPhone, while the Bluetooth chip handles audio transmission.

Today, I learned that on this planet, not in a parallel universe, a mythical creature roams among us. From afar (and even upon closer inspection), it looks just like any pair of wired Lightning earbuds for iPhones. However, concealed deeply within it is a dark secret that only remote villagers know of. It appears that some companies have been selling knockoff wired iPhone earbuds that need Bluetooth to function. You’ve read that right.

A crazy experience — I lost my earbuds in a remote town in Chile, so tried buying a new pair at the airport before flying out. But the new wired, iPhone, lightning-cable headphones didn’t work. Strange.

  • Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26227 introduces AI-powered replies for texts in the Phone Link for Android app.
  • The feature is on by default and relies on the cloud to generate three relevant replies whenever a message is received.
  • The build also includes some other additions, such as Emoji 15.1 support and a new Copilot keyboard shortcut for older machines.

Microsoft has been embracing AI and deeply integrating it into its products. It recently unveiled the Copilot Plus PCs, and now it’s baking its artificial smarts further into the Windows software. The latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build on the Canary Channel adds AI-generated replies to the Phone Link for Android app and tweaks the Copilot shortcut on some machines.

  • WhatsApp for Android version 2.24.12.4 beta references a new feature called Imagine that could enable users to generate images using Meta AI.
  • The company is also rolling out a new option that allows users to favorite WhatsApp chats and filter out the rest.

Meta has been busy baking AI features into the world’s most popular messaging app. While users in select regions can already chat with the Meta AI chatbot inside WhatsApp, the company’s plans extend beyond that. Based on a recent WhatsApp for Android beta build, it seems the messaging service will soon allow users to generate images using text prompts.

After analyzing WhatsApp for Android version 2.24.12.4 beta, WABetaInfo found references to a new feature called Imagine. According to the leaker, this upcoming addition will allow users to enter text prompts inside WhatsApp and have Meta AI generate relevant images. The feature will seemingly reside in the attachment menu users rely on to send contacts, documents, media, and more.

You’re dropping it wrong: Here’s how Apple tests iPhone durability

  • Marques Brownlee visited one of Apple’s durability testing facilities, where iPhones and other devices are subjected to drops, water pressure, and more.
  • Apple monitors the impact on its devices using dedicated slow-motion cameras and other advanced equipment.
  • The company claims that by making iPhones less repairable, it increases their overall durability.

Whenever Apple releases a new iPhone, a bunch of YouTubers rush to buy a few and then proceed with torturing them on camera. While they claim that these videos are meant to demonstrate the iPhones’ durability, their tests are often conducted unscientifically. A series of short videos now gives us a look inside Apple’s own durability testing facility, where the real studies occur.

I recently got to visit some Apple labs where they durability test new iPhones before they come out, and learned a few things (🧵THREAD)

iOS 18’s cloud AI features could use a nifty trick to keep your data as secure as on-device

  • Apple will reportedly rely on the Secure Enclave in its M2 Ultra and M4 chips to process cloud AI requests without compromising users’ privacy.
  • Beyond the short-term iOS 18 AI goals, the company could depend on its private data centers to power sleeker wearables.

WWDC24 kicks off in just ten days, and Apple is expected to reveal the AI features coming to iOS 18 during its opening keynote. While some of these additions may be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and work offline, the more advanced offerings may rely on Apple’s cloud solutions. According to a recent report, the Cupertino firm has managed to secure its cloud processing mechanism, and user data may always remain encrypted.

As per a report from The Information, Apple’s data centers may keep users’ data confidential even when processing it. Typically, servers have to decrypt user information to process it for AI functionality. By relying on the Secure Enclave in the M2 Ultra and M4 chips, Apple may have found a way to avoid decrypting the data altogether.

iOS 18’s potential ChatGPT features reportedly worry Microsoft

  • Apple’s own large language models (LLMs) reportedly aren’t capable enough to replicate ChatGPT, which has pushed it toward third-party partnerships.
  • The company may have internally tested a ChatGPT-powered Siri, and iOS 18 users could get their hands on it later this year.
  • Microsoft could be worried about the Apple-OpenAI deal, as it would have to accommodate the increasing server demand and compete against Apple’s features.

In under two weeks, Apple will finally reveal iOS 18 and its rumored AI additions at WWDC24. Given that the iPhone maker’s own AI efforts may still be lacking, it has reportedly resorted to third-party partnerships to power some of these smart features. As a result, OpenAI’s ChatGPT could be fueling Siri and other AI functionalities on iOS 18, and Microsoft is worried about it.

According to a report by The Information, Apple has internally tested a version of Siri that relies on ChatGPT’s smarts. The Cupertino firm is reportedly not ready to offer its own chatbot yet, pushing it to seek third-party alternatives for the time being. Meanwhile, it will likely use its own LLMs to power the less demanding iOS 18 features, such as on-device summarization.

Bored of videos? Now more of you can play free games on YouTube instead

  • YouTube has been testing Playables with select users for months, allowing them to play free games on the platform.
  • YouTube Playables are now rolling out to even more users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
  • Eligible users can access Playables through the official YouTube website, in addition to the iOS and Android apps.

We’ve entered an era of digital existential crises, where Instagram is trying to be TikTok, and Twitter wants to replace LinkedIn. In the midst of this chaos, YouTube has been experimenting with hosting free games on its platform. Following months of limited trials, the company is expanding this Playables feature to even more users in select countries.

As per an updated support document, YouTube Playables are now rolling out to more users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The new addition is available on the official website and mobile apps, allowing desktop, iOS, and Android users to enjoy over 75 games for free.

According to the document, Playables won’t strictly be limited to their respective tab in the Explore menu. Instead, users may come across these games in the Home feed, search results, and other (ir)relevant locations on YouTube.

Unlike Netflix games, you don’t need to pay YouTube to access its expanding catalog of Playables. Both free and YouTube Premium users can access the same titles and gameplay. The platform also supports tracking personal high scores, saving game progress, and sharing with friends — which can make it more social.

If you reside in one of the eligible countries and are interested in Playables, ensure your YouTube app is up to date. If the feature still doesn’t surface on your end, you may have to wait until it rolls out to your account. It’s currently unclear when YouTube Playables will expand to other regions or whether the company will honor its legacy and eventually kill it.

The super-thin iPad Pro M4 doesn’t snap in half…easily

JerryRigEverything iPad Pro M4 durability test

  • Apple explicitly stated during the Let Loose event that, despite being thinner than its predecessor, the iPad Pro M4 isn’t less durable.
  • Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) found breaking the iPad Pro M4 extremely challenging when bending it horizontally with his bare hands.
  • While the iPad Pro M4 may slightly bend after months of active use, that isn’t out of the ordinary, and it likely won’t be noticeable.

Ever since the iPhone 6’s infamous Bendgate, people have expressed skepticism whenever Apple launches a slim device. The case with the iPad Pro M4 is no different, especially since it’s the company’s thinnest device yet. Well, for those of you wondering, no, the iPad Pro M4 won’t introduce Bendgate 2.0, and — with regular use — the tablet shouldn’t snap in half.

The first assurance came from Apple directly during its Let Loose iPad launch event. When the company announced that the iPad Pro M4 is its thinnest product ever, it also highlighted that the design change doesn’t make it any less durable than its predecessor. That’s because Apple tweaked the internal structure and the materials used for the chassis.

Naturally, many critics won’t take Apple’s word for it and will demand more convincing proof. Luckily, Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) and other YouTubers have put the iPad Pro M4 to the test — providing the sleepless with the peace of mind they need.

Despite Zack bending it horizontally with all his force, the iPad Pro M4 just wouldn’t snap. He called it “black magic levels of structural integrity.” However, he finally managed to break it in half when bending it vertically. But, even then, the process took some effort.

While it’s common for slim tablets to bend a bit with time and use, you can rest assured that your iPad Pro M4 won’t break or curve noticeably with normal everyday use.

Uh oh: The latest iOS update is bringing back deleted photos from years ago

  • Multiple iPhone users have complained about the latest iOS 17.5 update bringing back photos they deleted years ago.
  • Not all affected users rely on iCloud sync for their photos, suggesting it may be a local storage bug.
  • There’s seemingly no fix available right now beyond manually checking and re-deleting the photos after the update.

iOS 17.5 launched earlier this week, bringing a slew of exciting new features to the latest iPhones. These include a fresh puzzle game, offline Apple News access, and a bug that could end your relationship. Indeed, multiple iPhone users have complained about photos they deleted years ago reappearing in their libraries after installing the update. So, what’s going on?

The issue was first highlighted on Reddit when user Specialist-Fix8528 shared that NSFW photos they took and deleted years ago reappeared after updating their iPhone to iOS 17.5. The user also faced a similar issue on their iPad, stating that deleted artwork from years earlier resurfaced, too.

The Reddit thread gained traction, with hundreds of commenters sharing similar experiences — indicating that the bug is relatively widespread. Based on these various reports, we were able to derive some plausible conclusions:

  • The bug seemingly affects the local storage, as some impacted users don’t use iCloud at all.
  • Photos from previous iPhones you’ve owned may still appear on your current one if you’ve restored full-device backups when upgrading your hardware.
  • Photo deletion typically breaks the link between stored data and the accessible user interface. As long as you’re not out of storage, the data could remain there in an unreadable state. So, the bug may be reestablishing these broken links and reindexing deleted photos on the user-facing side.

Right now, there’s seemingly no way to avoid this bug. After updating your iPhone to iOS 17.5, you will have to manually check your Photos app to see if any deleted content has reemerged. Do note, though, that not all users are impacted by this issue, as I personally didn’t encounter it on any of my updated devices.

Are you affected by this serious iOS 17.5 bug? Let us know in the comments.

iOS 18 could finally help iPhones catch up to Pixel’s Recorder app

  • iOS 18 will reportedly include a new AI-powered audio transcription and summarization feature that works across Apple Notes and Voice Memos.
  • The feature will likely be offered on iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, too, which Apple will officially preview during WWDC24’s opening keynote.

On multiple occasions, Apple has indirectly confirmed that iOS 18 will be an AI-centric release. While the operating system’s official preview won’t be revealed until next month, rumors have given us an idea of what to expect. The latest report suggests that iOS 18 will bake AI into the Apple Notes and Voice Memos apps, allowing iPhone users to transcribe and summarize their audio recordings automatically.

AppleInsider has learned that iOS 18 could finally bring automatic audio transcription and summarization to the iPhone. If this feature makes it to the public release, users will be able to read a transcript of the audio they’re recording in real time. The AI-powered addition — just like Google’s Recorder app on the Pixel 8 Pro — should also be able to generate a summary that highlights the recording’s key points.

  • The official Google app on iPhone now offers an image-scanning shortcut that users can access anywhere across iOS.
  • Once set up, users can trigger the shortcut using the Action button, a double or triple back tap, and/or Siri.

Android phone users have been able to use Google’s handy Circle to Search feature for months now. This allows them to look up images, text, and other elements visible on their devices’ screens. While Google will never be able to bake this feature natively into iOS, a new shortcut bridges the gap and gives iPhone users a taste of Circle to Search.

As highlighted by 9to5Google, the official Google app on iOS now offers a shortcut to scan an inputted image using the company’s Lens feature. While Google Lens isn’t identical to Circle to Search, the company has stated that both features are powered by the same optical character recognition (OCR) technology. To set up the shortcut, follow the steps below:

  • Customers in other regions will still receive charging bricks when buying one of the new iPad models.
  • Apple has also stopped including stickers of its logo in new iPad boxes worldwide to deliver completely plastic-free packaging.

Apple has finally launched its highly anticipated iPad Pro M4 and iPad Air M2. While these tablets pack mostly welcome changes, a few drawbacks have managed to slip through. It appears these iPads’ boxes don’t include chargers in the EU and the UK, prompting some customers to buy charging bricks separately.

As per a 9to5Mac report, Apple has stopped including charging bricks in its latest iPad boxes in the EU and UK. iPadOS will support third-party app stores in the EU later this year

  • Apple will support third-party app stores on iPadOS in the EU later this year to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
  • EU-based iPadOS users will also get to opt for third-party, non-WebKit browser engines and be prompted to pick a default web browser.
  • Apple has also tweaked its Core Technology Fee (CTF) policy to avoid bankrupting indie developers and those not making revenue from their apps.

A few days ago, the EU designated iPadOS as a gatekeeper platform, giving Apple six months to comply with the Digital Markets Act. To avoid getting fined or leaving the EU market, the Cupertino firm will comply this fall by allowing third-party app stores on the iPad — likely via the iPadOS 18 update.

Through a post on its developer website, Apple announced that it would bring the EU-exclusive iOS features to iPadOS this fall. These features include support for third-party app stores, app distribution through the web, third-party, non-WebKit browser engines, a default web browser prompt, third-party contactless payments, and more.

iOS 17.5’s ‘Repair State’ feature may let you track your iPhone during repairs

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
  • iOS 17.5 beta 4 includes a new Repair State feature that allows users to keep Find My enabled when sending in an iPhone for repairs.
  • The feature is currently in beta, so there’s a small chance it won’t make it to the stable release when it launches later this month.
  • We advise iOS beta users not to enable the Repair State feature on their iPhones, as there’s currently no way to turn it off.

For a long time, Apple has required users to turn off Find My before sending in their iPhones for repairs. That’s to ensure that the device isn’t stolen and that the customer is its legitimate owner. However, that practice poses a serious risk, as sometimes these iPhones get stolen in transit. To address users’ concerns, Apple is developing a new Repair State feature for the latest iPhone.

As per a 9to5Mac report, iOS 17.5 beta 4 includes a new Repair State feature in the iPhone’s Find My app. This addition is currently exclusive to iOS, so those on the latest iPadOS and macOS betas won’t be able to utilize it. Through Repair State, a user can verify that they’re the owner of the iPhone without disabling Find My. In essence, you’re just proving that the iPhone is yours without disabling Find My tracking features and the Activation Lock, so you can continue monitoring your iPhone’s location during the repair.

More Spotify users will now have to pay for lyrics

Spotify on mobile
Credit: Tech Team / Android Authority
  • Spotify started testing paywalled lyrics with a limited number of accounts back in September, pushing free users to upgrade to Premium.
  • This change appears to be rolling out widely now, as many free users have complained about the matter for the past few days.
  • YouTube Music has arguably become a better music streaming platform for users seeking free access with fewer limitations.

Last September, Spotify restricted some free users from accessing its lyrics feature as part of an A/B experiment. After months of testing, it now appears that the company is rolling out this new restriction widely. Those wanting to view song lyrics while listening must now pay for Spotify Premium.

In the past few days, multiple Redditors (1, 2, 3, 4) have voiced their frustration regarding Spotify’s latest limitation. What was a free feature for years now requires users to pay a monthly fee.

iOS 18 may finally get the Calendar and Reminders apps to talk to each other

  • iOS 18 will reportedly allow iPhone users to view and create reminders directly from the Apple Calendar app.
  • Reminders created in the Calendar app would still be accessible from the dedicated Reminders app.
  • Along with the Reminders integration, the Calendar app on iOS 18 is expected to feature some design changes.

If you’ve actively used Apple’s productivity suite on an iPhone, then you’re probably familiar with how disconnected the Calendar and Reminders apps are. The two applications pretty much don’t communicate at all, making it tough for users to view their full day-to-day plans without opting for third-party solutions. Fortunately, that could all change with iOS 18, as the update will reportedly integrate Reminders into Calendar.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider, iOS 18 may allow users to create and view reminders using the Apple Calendar app. This would enable users to browse a more comprehensive hub that bundles Calendar events and Reminders tasks in a single spot.

Apple releases iOS 17.5 beta 4 to developers

  • iOS 17.5 beta 4 is now available as an over-the-air (OTA) update to those enrolled in Apple’s developer program.
  • Past pre-release builds introduced support for app sideloading from the web in the EU and a new Quartiles puzzle game.
  • The stable iOS 17.5 version will presumably become available to all iPhone users on Monday, May 13.

iOS 17.5 developer beta 4 is now available to install on the latest iPhone models. Those enrolled in Apple’s developer program can proceed to download the OTA update using the Settings app. Otherwise, iPhone users on the stable channel can expect the final version to launch on Monday, May 13 — assuming Apple sticks to its usual schedules.

iOS 18 could supercharge Safari with more than just Apple’s AI features

  • Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 may pack an AI-powered summarization feature that leverages an on-device LLM.
  • It may also include a new web content eraser, which would enable users to delete webpage elements and sections, such as ad banners.
  • Apple may upgrade Visual Look Up in 2025 to include support for identifying consumer products in images — not just pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s no secret that iOS 18 will offer some major new features powered by artificial intelligence. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook explicitly stated that the company would be revealing its AI goods at some point this year. While the specifics of these AI upgrades are generally vague now, it appears that Safari on iOS 18 may pack some of them.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider, Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 will receive a major update. For starters, users may be able to rely on AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization, similar to what the Arc browser currently offers. The on-device Ajax large language model (LLM) would reportedly scan the text to identify the main topics and summarize web content accordingly.

Apple’s not-so-FineWoven accessory line may soon be discontinued

  • Apple has reportedly halted the production of its FineWoven accessory line following months of customer complaints.
  • The company may be looking into a new alternative that is more durable than FineWoven’s material quality.
  • While it’s still unclear what the upcoming material could be, it almost certainly won’t be genuine leather.

With the launch of the iPhone 15 series last September, Apple discontinued its leather-made accessories in favor of a new FineWoven material. While the two iPhone case variants share the same $59 price tag, their look, feel, and longevity don’t quite match. As a result, customers and reviewers have been voicing their frustrations on online platforms for months, and Apple may have finally listened.

According to leaker Kosutami, Apple has stopped and removed the production line for its FineWoven accessories. The company is reportedly shifting to a new material due to FineWoven’s bad durability.

Don’t hold your breath for a (really) cheap iPhone anytime soon

  • Compared to Android-powered rivals, the $429 iPhone SE isn’t cheap. You can find more recent tech for a lower price.
  • Apple may need to release an even cheaper iPhone to appeal to new customers in emerging markets.
  • The iPhone maker is reportedly unwilling to pursue this option to avoid diluting its premium brand and to maintain its high-end status.

For a long time, Apple had refrained from releasing lower-end iPhones that cater to those on more limited budgets. While we now have an SE line with a lower price tag, it’s still relatively expensive compared to cheap Android phones. Despite that, Apple reportedly has no plans to release an even cheaper iPhone anytime soon, as that would dilute its premium brand.

According to Bloomberg, Apple may need to release a more affordable iPhone to appeal to customers in emerging markets. However, the company is reportedly unwilling to do so, as that could impact its high-end status. Consequently, those on lower budgets will have to seek a low-end Android phone or opt for a used iPhone.

A new report highlights Apple’s environmental hypocrisy with iPhones

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

  • Apple’s recycling robots, Liam and Daisy, aren’t as efficient, reliable, or effective as you’d imagine.
  • In just a couple of years, Apple shipped a third party over 530,000 used iPhones to get them shredded.
  • Many of the products Apple gets shredded are functional and could realistically be refurbished or repurposed.

In recent years, Apple has been particularly loud about its environmental efforts and sustainability. As its 2030 deadline to become carbon neutral approaches, the company has been dedicating segments in its media events to share its progress and relevant updates. A new report, however, sheds light on some lesser-known procedures that contradict what the tech overlord publicly preaches.

The consumer-facing practices

iPhone Box with Charger and cable

To unsuspecting customers, Apple seems to care deeply about our planet. After all, the Cupertino firm stopped shipping charging bricks with new iPhones and reduced the packaging’s size noticeably. Furthermore, it discontinued its leather-made accessories in favor of the more eco-friendly FineWoven line (which deteriorates at a much faster rate, by the way). That’s not to mention its focus on utilizing cleaner energy sources for its operations to reduce the pollution it causes.

The company has also boasted about its robots — Liam and Daisy — which were designed to disassemble traded-in iPhones. Through them, Apple gets to reclaim some of the functional components, recycle them, and, consequently, minimize the e-waste it produces.

From afar, this all seems responsible and eco-conscious; but what if we were to take a closer look?

According to Bloomberg, Liam and its successor, Daisy, aren’t exactly reliable in getting their job done efficiently. The former robot would malfunction if the inserted iPhone’s screws were corroded. Furthermore, without human assistance, Liam wouldn’t run for more than ten minutes.

Meanwhile, Daisy is a more foolproof version, but still, it can only dismantle around 200 units per hour. That’s almost 1.2 million recycled iPhones per year, which Apple sells every 48 hours.

So, what happens to the rest of the traded-in iPhones? They get shredded.

When a used product doesn’t meet Apple’s high standards to be refurbished and resold, it gets shredded by a third-party company. The valuable metals are then extracted from the elemental soup and incorporated into new devices. Shredding, however, wastes more components than Daisy’s procedure.

One of the main issues associated with shredding is that many of the devices sent are functional and could easily be repurposed. Those getting them shredded reportedly found it challenging at times, as the devices weren’t always damaged significantly. Despite that, they had to break them down to meet contractual obligations.

In just a couple of years, Apple shipped GEEP (a shredding company) more than 530,000 iPhones, 25,000 iPads, and 19,000 Watches for shredding. If Apple is truly concerned about the environment, it would’ve repurposed the functional electronics instead of destroying them en masse. There’s scope to introduce an additional tier of “refurbished” products that are a bit lower in quality, which could provide a second home to these less-than-perfect iPhones at an even cheaper rate.

The new Activation Lock is a double-edged carbon emitter

According to the same report, Apple claimed that around 100,000 items sent to GEEP for shredding were actually stolen. The Cupertino tech giant detected a number of flagged iPhones being activated in China, as employees would smuggle them out of the shredding facility and sell them elsewhere as used phones or spare parts.

That process, however, is about to get a lot trickier, as Apple’s Activation Lock now applies to spare parts, too.

For those unfamiliar, the Activation Lock feature disables lost or stolen iPhones, making them useless beyond extracting their spare parts. With this feature expanding to individual iPhone internals, devices obtained through unofficial means will also be useless as spare parts.

While the spare parts’ Activation Lock will make iPhones less appealing targets for thieves, it will certainly increase the e-waste. Ultimately, iPhones will continue to get stolen or lost anyway, and no one will be able to utilize them meaningfully.

To be clear, this isn’t to defend thieves in any way. However, it has become apparent that Apple is purposefully wasting resources by forcing functional devices to be shredded. If smugglers can manage to give these devices a new lifeline, the trillion-dollar company surely can devise a proper procedure that similarly spares usable iPhones. But that wouldn’t make business sense, so here we are.
