Avowed was originally planned to be released in Fall 2024. In June, a blog post accidentally revealed a new date of November 12, 2024, but it was quickly deleted as it appeared to not be set in stone.

Avowed got a new story trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, and a 30-minute gameplay deep dive followed shortly after. The lengthy gameplay showed both first and third-person gameplay in the world of Eora and showcased some of the magical tools players will access to in the RPG.

With Avowed out of the way for now, you can check out what other games to focus on in our look The Biggest Games of August 2024 and beyond. Additionally, you can also check out the rest of Xbox's gamescom plans right here.

A New Darksiders Game Has Just Been Revealed: 'Be Prepared to Ride Again...'

A brand-new Darksiders has just been revealed at the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase, and while we didn't learn much, we do know that we should all "be prepared to ride again..."

As detailed by PlayStation.Blog, the currently untitled Darksiders project was given a brief teaser trailer that takes place in a fiery "chamber impossibly old." In this chamber, there are "three colossal stone heads, suddenly set ablaze with otherworldly flames. The Charred Council awake, and roar a single word in unison: Horseman."

Darksiders fans will remember the Charred Council as a trio who keeps balance in the universe and prevents one being from becoming too powerful.

As those familiar with the franchise know, the Darksiders franchise stars the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. 2010's Darksiders starred War, 2012's Darksiders II featured Death, 2018's Darksiders III put players in Fury's shoes, and Darksiders Genesis let players control Strife (and War!).

Could this game bring all Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse together for one grand adventure? Or will this be another spin-off title like Darksiders Genesis? We shouldn't have too long to wait to find out, as THQ Nordic said it will have more to "share on where the world of Darksiders is going soon."

This new Darksiders project was just one of the reveals from the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase, and it joined an unannounced Tarsier Studios title, Way of the Hunter: Lintukoto Reserve, the Gothic Remake, Titan Quest 2, Wreckfest 2, Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Space For Sale, and The Eternal Life of Goldman.

Bungie Is Reportedly Not Working on Destiny 3, Will Focus on Smaller Destiny 2 Updates That May Be Free

Following the news that Bungie laid off 220 people, details have reportedly been revealed about the company's future, including that it isn't currently working on Destiny 3, that it will shift its focus from larger expansions to smaller updates for Destiny 2 that may be free, and that a Destiny spin-off was canceled.

Bloomberg spoke to ten current and former Bungie employees who asked not to be identified, and they "described a company that grew too fast and tried to develop too many projects at once, spreading resources too thin rather than prioritizing its chief moneymaker, Destiny 2."

Instead of Destiny 3, Bungie Placed a Big Bet on Payback

While there may be many who believed Bungie was hard at work on Destiny 3, especially considering Destiny 2 was released in 2017, the studio decided to shift its focus to something completely new called Payback.

Payback, which was described as taking elements from such games as Warframe and Genshin Impact, was set in the Destiny universe but was meant to "shake up the formula in major ways." Instead of being a first-person shooter, Payback was being developed as a third-person title that would see players using the franchise's characters to explore a large world and work together to "battle monsters and solve puzzles."

This was not being billed as a sequel to Destiny 2, but more of a spin-off. Sadly, Payback was canceled just two months ago so Bungie could prioritize its more imminent games. Instead, it moved much of the payback team to work on Marathon, its PvP-focused extraction shooter live-service game which is set to be released in 2025.

Sadly, Payback was canceled just two months ago so Bungie could prioritize its more imminent games.

With no Payback and no Destiny 3 in the near future, Bungie is planning to continue supporting Destiny 2, albeit in a different way. Despite Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion reviewing very well - we gave it a 9/10 - the studio looks to "no longer pursue paid expansions as it did in the past." According to one of the sources, sales for each expansion have declined year after year.

Instead of this annual release model for big expansions, Bungie looks to "retain and attract players with smaller-scale drops modeled after Into the Light." For those unfamiliar, Into the Light was released ahead of The Final Shape and added the Onslaught activity, the Hall of Champions social space, Parade Armor 2.0, the return of 12 iconic guns with the BRAVE Arsenal, and much more.

Furthermore, Bungie is aiming to release these updates for free alongside overhauling activities it hopes will keep its hardcord player satisfied. There are also "other vague plans" that include a storyline that "will feature characters and worlds that Destiny has not yet explored."

So, instead of big new Destiny 2 expansions, Bungie will put resources into these updates, a smoother onboarding process, and more. In one bright spot, some of the sources said they are "optimistic about the vision for Destiny 2 under new director Tyson Green."

Trouble at the Top

The layoffs have hit the team hard, and most of the people Bloomberg spoke to were critical of Bungie CEO Pete Parsons, saying he "failed to take accountability for his own bad bets" and that he was "overly optimistic in his communication with the staff."

There is also worry because longtime veterans Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy left Bungie this week, and that has led to a lot of "lingering questions about the future of decision-making at Bungie." Now, without some of its leaders, a big hit to audio, narrative, and player support teams, and much more, Bungie staff are now looking at creating world-class experiences with a "smaller staff, tighter schedules, and a company that looks significantly different than it did three days ago."

Most of the people Bloomberg spoke to were critical of Bungie CEO Pete Parsons, saying he "failed to take accountability for his own bad bets."

In addition to the layoffs, Bungie is hoping to move 155 of its employees to Sony Interactive Entertainment, and a seperate group will be part of a team working on an incubation project code-named Gummybears.

Ever since Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie, things have not gotten better. Bungie took that cash and "hired hundreds of new staff members and pursued myriad incubation projects, including mobile versions of Destiny, remakes of old games and new franchises." Now, it's most important former and current employees are suffering after some of these plans never saw the light of day or turned out as those in charge hoped. One of the sources even noted that Parsons told staff in a meeting in later 2023 that Bungie had missed its revenue targets by 45% and was losing money.

For more, check out how another former Bungie employee claimed the studio faced insolvency without Sony's acquistion and the games industry's criticism of Bungie mangagement and Parsons in wake of these layoffs.

Valorant Is Now Officially Available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 After Open Beta Period

Following a quick Open Beta period, Riot Games has surprised fans by officially launching Valorant on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.

Valorant Console is now available to players in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Brazil and promises to bring the "same uncompromising, competitive experience that we've provided PC players for years: a precise, team-based, tactical shooter."

🚨 Incursion Imminent 🚨

VALORANT is now LIVE on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. pic.twitter.com/cX5boZXPRI

— VALORANT (@VALORANT) August 2, 2024

As previously discussed, cross-play will not be available between PC and console players as Riot Games wishes to "maintain Valorant's renowned standard for competitive integrity." PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to play together, however.

While that may not be the best news for some, Riot Games has reassured fans that their Friends List, Collection (Skins, Player Cards, Gun Buddies, etc.), Battle Pass progress, and Agent unlocks will carry over. Furthermore, both PC and console players will "receive simultaneous platform releases of all live patch balances, new agents, maps, premium content, and additional live service features."

We’ve received so much valuable feedback from players during Limited Beta, and feel confident to deliver on our gameplay promise for console player," Arnar Gylfason, production director of Valorant, said. "Whether it's hitting that perfect shot, executing a flawless team play, or wiping out the enemy team, we look forward to seeing console players experience the same gameplay thrill as VALORANT PC players.”

Valorant is free-to-play, but Xbox Game Pass members will be happy to know that all current and future Agents will be unlocked.

In our Valorant review for PC from 2020, we said, "Valorant is the most fun I've had with a multiplayer FPS since Valve's Team Fortress 2. The flexibility of its magically-infused cast paired with a deep arsenal makes for a magnificent competitive canvas, if a tricky one to initially pick up. I'm already pondering new strategies to pull off with my friends in the future, and that joyous daydreaming won't stop anytime soon."

Anno 117: Pax Romana Finally Brings the City-Builder Franchise to the Ancient Roman Empire - Ubisoft Forward 2024

Ubisoft has revealed the beloved city-builder franchise Anno will finally be taking fans to the Ancient Roman Empire in Anno 117: Pax Romana. Furthermore, it will be released in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

While the team wasn't ready to show off gameplay, it did share a short teaser that set the tone for what fans can expect. You'll be introduced to the Town Crier in the trailer, who will appear in game, and he is making the grand announcement that a new Governor is coming to bring a new era of wealth and prosperity to these lands. However, he is speaking to no one as the lands have not been claimed yet and sare waiting for you. In a clever nod to Field of Dreams, the tagline is revealed as, "Build it and they wil come."

And build it you will in Anno 117: Pax Romana, as you will take on the role of a Roman Governor who was sent by the emperor to manage the "costs of maintaining peace" across the empire.

That obviously won't be an easy feat, but Ubisoft is doing all it can to make it a rewarding and fun challenge for all players. One of the ways they are accomplishing this is, for the first time in an Anno game, letting players choose their starting province.

The two provinces so far revealed are the Celtic Wetlands of Albion and the traditional Roman heartlands called Latium. Albion is a "land filled with mysteries where no civilized Roman wants to be," and Latium is "close to the hungry heart" of the Empire and will give you that more traditional Roman feel. These may be different lands, but you will eventually be able to connect all of them together under one flag.

Anno 117: Pax Romana will be the first mainline Anno game since 2017's Anno 1800, and it will keep many of the series pillars fans have loved, including "a unique mix of traditional city building, deep economical simulation, and 4X features like diplomacy, military, and narrative layers."

However, this also marks a new era for the Anno franchise, and we had the chance to talk to creative director Manuel Reinher and brand director Haye Anderson about why this is the most exciting time to be or become a fan of the series.

An Anno for the Modern Age

Anno first jumped to the world stage in 1998 with Anno 1602, but Anno 117: Pax Romana is the title Ubisoft is really pushing as a modern strategy powerhouse that can stand with any of the competition. Rome is the perfect location for this big bet, and while it's been an option for locations for previous Anno games, the time has finally arrived to answer fans' calls with a bit of a twist to this trip back in time.

"We want to tell the untold story of how it was to govern Roman provinces," Reinher said, "During that era, there was over 200 years of peace and it was the time after a big conquest. And we are talking an empire of people from three continents that accounted for almost 20% of the world's population. So, the story we are trying to tell is how did the Romans manage to stabilize this?"

You, as the governor, will help answer that question and decide how to maintain the peace in these regions and please the locals while also enforcing the law given from the Emperor himself. The team also stressed to us that we'll be living in a meticulously recreated Roman Empire, but this is more historically inspired than historically accurate, so there will be smart concessions made to make it a more fun gaming experience without feeling out of place.

Speaking of fun, Ubisoft also wants Anno 117 to be fun for players of all skill levels while not taking out any of the challenge for veteran players and those looking for a rewarding mountain to climb. In our Anno 1800 review, we said, "Outright newcomers to this type of game will have a tough go at it, as important elements of Anno 1800 aren’t given comprehensive tutorials, but diligent gamers will excitedly watch hours fly by once they get settled in." The team has taken this feedback to heart.

"First of all, we want to improve our on-boarding," Reinher said. "We want to embrace new players and also continue to embrace the complexity. One of the steps to accomplish this is making the game more modular. If you are a new player and what to pick one of the provinces that speaks to you, go for it! And you'll have more context and story to help you along.

"But if you are a core player, you can of course combine the provinces and trade and do all the stuff that you love to do in managing multiple lands. So, it's not about explaining everything, it's about removing the hard walls and giving players more freedom to make the game more digestible and adapt it to your needs. So, although we are bringing innovation to Anno 117, we are staying true to the legacy of the brand."

In closing, Anderson shared that this is a new era for Anno and one that the team is doing all it can to meet the players' high expectations.

"We are delivering a Roman game with a fresh perspective and unseen scale in detail for them," Anderson said." We are doing more social content, more Twitch content, and we are rebranding in a way we can add more people into our community to make the Anno family more robust and welcoming.

"I think this is the real beginning of a partnership between the community and game development and working together to deliver the best product possible."

The team is excited to share much more about Anno 117: Pax Romana in the future leading up to its 2025 launch, but in the meantime keep an eye out for the Easter Eggs just waiting to be found in the trailer that may reveal more about the game.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure Opening Date Revealed for Walt Disney World

Tiana's Bayou Adventure, The Princess and the Frog-themed ride that will be replacing Splash Mountain, will officially open at Walt Disney World in Florida on June 28, 2024.

Disney Parks revealed the news in a blog post and on American Idol's Disney Night, sharing that guests will soon be able to "join beloved characters Princess Tiana, Mama Odie, Louis, and all-new friends on a thrilling adventure, all set against the music and excitement of a New Orleans celebration." Eudora, Charlotte, Prince Ralphie, and others will also be part of the fun.

There will be "dozens" of Audio-Animatronics during the ride, and many of the film's original voice actors will be reprising their roles for Tiana's Bayou Adventure, including Anika Noni Rose as Princess Tiana, Bruno Campos as Prince Naveen, Jenifer Lewis as Mama Odie, and Michael-Leon Wooley as Louis.

There will also be some new characters thrown in the mix for this ride, including some critters like an otter, a rabbit, a raccoon, a beaver, a turtle, and more who play instruments "made of natural materials found in the bayou." Furthermore, they will all be showcasing their Zydeco, Rara, and Afro-Cuban musical skills in a tribute to music that is authentic to the region of New Orleans. Oh, there will be new music from award-winning artists PJ Morton and Terence Blanchard that will join favorites from the film.

The ride will also honor New Orleans with artwork from Louisiana artist Malaika Favorite for the queue, an original metalwork weathervane from third-generation master blacksmith, Darryl Reeves and his apprentice, Karina Roca, and art from New Orleans artist Sharika Mahdi which was an inspiration for the attraction "from the beginning."

And you know this wouldn't be a New Orleans-inspired attraction without some beignets, and guests will even be able to catch the scent of the delicious treats as they walk through the attraction queue.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure will continue the story that was told in 2009's The Princess and the Frog, and will see Tiana throwing a Mardi Gras party to thank her loved ones and those in the community who helped make her dream come true of opening Tiana's Palace. And don't worry, while there is so much new here, Splash Mountain's 50-foot drop will be returning for this ride.

For those of you who are Florida-based Disney Cast Members, Annual Passholders, or eligible Disney Vacation Club Members, you may get a chance to ride Tiana's Bayou Adventure before its grand opening. Be sure to keep an eye out for more details on May 14.

Lastly, Disneyland will be getting its own Tiana's Bayou Adventure later this year, but we still don't have a firm date. Either way, we're almost there!

If you can't wait for the attraction to open, be sure to check out more details on Tiana's Bayou Adventure and where The Princess and the Frog and Tiana rank in our lists of the best Disney Animated movies and Disney Princesses, respectively.

Roger Corman, Legendary Filmmaker and King of B-Movies, Dies at 98

Roger Corman, the legendary filmmaker and king of B-movies who also helped launch the careers of Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Robert DeNiro, and many more, has died at the age of 98.

As reported by Variety, Corman passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California, while being surrounded by his family.

"His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,'” the family said in a statement.

Roger Corman was born on April 5, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, and he wasn't a person who grew up dreaming of making it big in Hollywood. He actually went to Stanford University and chose to study industrial engineering, but he discovered that field was not his passion.

After college, he spent a whole four days working at U.S. Electrical Motors and ended that run when he told his boss, "I've made a terrible mistake." With his future now in his hands and limitless, he chose to walk down the path of filmmaking since his brother, Gene Corman, was a working agent in the movie industry.

His first gig was in the mail room of 20th Century Fox and he would end up having a career that was the stuff of legend. However, he wasn't known for big budget blockbusters and instead found his niche in the world of low-budget films of many genres that could be made very quickly.

He helped spearhead hundreds of these films as the co-founder of New World Pictures, the founder of Concorde/New Horizons, and more, and he was given an Honorary Academy Award for his "rich engendering of films and filmmakers."

He was given such nicknames as "The King of the Cult Film" and "The Pope of Pop Cinema" as only a very few of his films failed to turn a profit in nearly six decades of making movies. While these films may not be the height of cinema, they helped lay the foundation for some of the greatest actors and directors that have ever lived.

In addition to the names listed in the intro, Corman was a key player in helping bolster the careers of Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Peter Bogdanovich, Gale Anne Hurd, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, William Shatner, Sandra Bullock, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, and many more.

As previously mentioned, he worked with Ron Howard when he was directing his first feature film in Grand Theft Auto in 1977. Howard complained a bit about Corman not paying for any extras in the film, to which he responded, "Ron, if you do a good job for me on this picture, you'll never have to work for me again."

He's also somewhat responsible for the mega-franchise known as The Fast and the Furious as he produced a film with the same name back in 1955. Producer Neal Moritz approached Corman about the name when he was getting ready to launch the franchise, and the two agreed to make it happen.

Most of his credits were as a producer for movies that boasted a budget of just $5 million or under, but he also directed over 50 projects, including Machine Gun Kelly, I Mobster, The Wild Angels, Little Shop of Horrors, House of Usher, and The Intruder.

He kept up a relationship with many of the stars he worked with over the years, and a lot of them gave him cameo roles in their films, including Coppola's The Godfather: Part II, Howard's Apollo 13, Demme's Philadelphia, Demme's The Silence of the Lambs, and Dante's Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

Speaking of those he helped and worked with, people from all over the world have already begun sharing a few words about the impact of Roger Corman, and we'll share a few below;

"RIP Roger Corman. A great movie maker and mentor. When I was 23 he gave me my 1st shot at directing. He launched many careers & quietly lead our industry in important ways. He remained sharp, interested and active even at 98. Grateful to have known him," Ron Howard wrote on Twitter/X.

"Roger Corman was my very first boss, my lifetime mentor and my hero. Roger was one of the greatest visionaries in the history of cinema. I am absolutely devastated by his loss and send my love and deepest condolences to the Corman family," Gale Anne Hurd wrote on Twitter/X.

"Roger Corman, one of the most influential movie directors in my life, has passed away. It was my privilege to know him.He was a great friend. He shaped my childhood with science fiction movies and Edgar Allen Poe epics. I'll miss you, Roger," John Carpenter wrote on Twitter/X.

"We lost a true legend! In 1994, I was in a low budget film when @markhamill visited. Why is a superstar like Mark here? I was confused. Well, it was a #RogerCorman project. Everyone who was anyone loved visiting with Roger! Even a jedi! Last Dec, at the NAEJ awards, I met up w/ Mr. Corman again. He was energetic, joyful and still super passionate for filmmaking. Pure inspiration! One of a kind. Sad to know this special human is not with us anymore. TY for everything. RIP," Ming-Na Wen wrote on Twitter/X.

"So very sorry to hear of Roger Corman’s passing. Working with Roger in The Wild Angels was a highlight of my life. He was a such a lovely man. Sending condolences to his wife Julie and their children," Nancy Sinatra wrote on Twitter/X.

Corman is survived by his wife, Julie Corman, and his two daughters, Catherine and Mary.

Helldivers 2 Review Bomb Cape Seemingly Teased by Arrowhead CEO

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has taken to X/Twitter to seemingly share a first look at the cape design that was inspired by the review bombing on Steam following the PSN account linking fiasco.

The image, which you can see below, is only a small tease of what's to come as we only get a look at the bottom right of the cape. However, that hasn't stopped fans from getting very excited.

@MadeByKoobi was one of the many who can't wait for this cape, and they shared the always-wonderful Jurassic Park meme of Dr. Ian Malcolm saying, 'You did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it."

Countless others praised the team for actually making this a reality, and this first look follows many designs created by fans themselves after Sony reversed course and decided to not force players to link a PSN account to play Helldivers 2.

The capes from both the community and Arrowhead are inspired by the horrifying red line of negative reviews that appeared on Steam following the announcement of this planned requirement, and it appears it will soon live forever in Helldivers 2 as a funny reminder of the rough patch for the game that has otherwise been a big hit all around.

Helldivers 2 received over 14,000 negative reviews today due to an update that will require PSN accounts next week.

Speaking of that rough patch, it also led to Helldivers 2 being pulled from 177 countries due to the PSN linking requirement, which obviously caused a huge headache for everyone inside and out of the studio.

Thankfully, Sony changed course and all is right in Helldivers 2 for the time being. Well, besides the constant threat of enemies at every turn doing their best to stop us from spreading democracy.

"Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward," PlayStation wrote on its official account.

"We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans."

28 Years Later Release Date Revealed

28 Years Later, the post-apocalyptic and zombie-filled sequel to 2007's 28 Weeks Later, is set to be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.

28 Years Later will be directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the same duo who worked together on the original 28 Days Later from 2002. Furthermore, this film will be the start of a brand-new trilogy and looks to star Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Cillian Murphy, who starred as Jim in 28 Days Later but didn't return for 28 Weeks Later, is a producer on the film. Will he also reprise his role? Only time will tell.

For those unfamiliar, Murphy's Jim was a bicycle courier who fell into a coma right before the outbreak of a "rage virus" that was highly contagious and was spread from an infected chimpanzee.

As for the future installments, it was reported that The Marvels and Candyman director Nia DaCosta is already in talks to direct the second of these next three entries, indicating Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, DNA Films, and Decibel Films are betting big on this revival.

There have been discussions for many years about continuing the story that was left hanging in 28 Weeks Later, and Garland even mentioned that plans for a 28 Months Later film were being talked about.

For more, check out why we included 28 Days Later in our list of the best zombie films of all time and where it ranks on our list of the 31 best modern horror movies.

Sigourney Weaver Is Reportedly in Talks to Join the Star Wars Universe With The Mandalorian & Grogu

Alien and Avatar star Sigourney Weaver may be headed back to space as she is in talks to join the Star Wars universe with a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

THR and The InSneider reported the news, but there were no further details on who she would be playing or how close to a deal the two sides are. Despite that, Weaver is a sci-fi icon and would be a most welcome addition to that galaxy far, far away.

Weaver has won many awards during her career, including a BAFTA for The Ice Storm, two Golden Globes for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, and even a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Earth (The Book). She has also been nominated for three Oscars, with one of them being for her work in Aliens.

As for The Mandalorian & Grogu, it is currently set to be the first Star Wars film to be released in theaters since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. This new movie will be directed by Jon Favreau and will "lead Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni."

Star Wars fans still have a bit of a wait ahead of them, however, as The Mandalorian & Grogu currently has a release date of May 22, 2026.

Until then, fans will be able to look forward to such other projects as Disney+'s Star Wars: The Acolyte, which will premiere on June 4, 2024, and is set during the High Republic era.

For more, check out our look at why The Mandalorian and Grogu's next adventure won't be on Disney+.
