Tim Sweeney: "No regrets" on Fortnite app store drama, as Epic Game Store launches on mobile in Europe

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has said he has "no regrets" over his company's decision to break Apple and Google's terms of service back in August 2020 - something that saw the hugely-popular Fortnite booted off both iPhone and Android storefronts.

The carefully choreographed stunt sparked four years of legal wrangling over Apple and Google's app store policies - and has ultimately led to Epic Games launching its own mobile store today on Android worldwide and on iPhone in mainland Europe, thanks to policy changes demanded of Apple by the EU.

"We've probably lost a billion dollars not having Fortnite on iOS the past four years," Sweeney said, in a briefing to press ahead of the Epic Games Store on mobile going live. "But what's the price of freedom?"

Epic Games' free game giveaways have been "magical" for user acquisition

Epic Games' Tim Sweeney has admitted that whilst its free game giveaways have been good for business, many of its exclusivity deals were "not good investments."

In a recent press call, Epic CEO Sweeney talked candidly about Epic Games Store's user acquisition methods, but acknowledged that whilst "a few of [its EGS exclusives] worked extremely well", "a lot of them were not good investments."

Conversely, Sweeney said its free games program has been "just magical" and "very economical," even though the idea of giving away its games may seem "counterintuitive" at first.

Epic's mobile marketplace and The Plucky Squire's brave launch | GI Microcast

The latest episode of the GI Microcast is now available to download, taking a quick dive into the biggest stories of the past week.

Our main topic this week is the launch of the Epic Games Store on mobile, bringing Fortnite back to Android and (in the EU) iOS four years after Epic began its legal dispute with Apple and Google. We discuss the potential for alternative mobile stores, and Epic's goal to reach 100,000 installs before 2025 despite the 12 to 15 steps players must go through on each mobile ecosystem.

And in this week's What Do The Numbers Mean?, Chris takes a look at the long-awaited release date for Devolver Digital's The Plucky Squire, two fairly hefty (and one very similar) games coming out around it, and, of course, sales figures that offer a little more context.

Epic Games launches mobile store, bringing Fortnite and Fall Guys to iOS and Android

The Epic Games Store is launching on mobile today.

The Fortnite firm announced it will be bringing its games marketplace to Android worldwide, and to iOS in the European Union thanks to this year's Digital Markets Act requiring Apple to enable third-party stores on its mobile ecosystem.

Epic's mobile catalogue will begin with three titles, starting with Fortnite, which marks its return to iOS, as well as Rocket League Sideswipe (a spin-off of the popular racing sports game that launched in 2021) and the brand new Fall Guys Mobile. The latter will feature cross-play and cross-progression with the popular online game already on PC and consoles.

Epic Games Store goes mobile, brings Fortnite and other games to iPhones (in the EU) and Android (around the world)

Six years ago Epic Games launched mobile versions of popular game Fortnite for Android and iOS. And two years later the company intentionally violated the rules for Apple and Google’s mobile app stores by offering an alternate payment method. Both Apple and Google kicked Fortnite out of their respective app stores, and a long-running legal […]

What to Expect in Fortnite Season 2: Chapter 8

At long last, the alien invasion is finally over! That being said though, Fortnite’s island is full of…cubes? We always get a certain theme when it comes to starting with a new season, and this time, when Season 8 launched, it was simply called “Cubed”.

While we won’t get into the nitty-gritty of how the story is going so far because of its intricacy, the basic premise is that the cubes that were used to power the alien mothership that used to abduct players has now been set free, resulting in the cubes wreaking havoc on the island.

Besides that though, players can expect a combination of new weapons, locations, characters, and skins in the Fortnite Item Shop. Heck, there are even portals that transport players into a monster-filled realm. So just what can we expect in Season 2: Chapter 8 of Fortnite? Let’s find out.

The Season 8 Battle Pass: Same Old, Same Old

When talking about the Battle Pass in Fortnite, it’s pretty much the same thing every time. Veterans will be happy to know that the Season 8 Battle Pass will come at a familiar price point of 950 V-Bucks or approximately $10 for those that want to unlock all of the premium goodies. The free Battle Pass is available for everyone, but they won’t be able to get the more wanted items such as skins that aren’t available in the Fortnite Item Shop.

For those that want to skip the grind, they have the option to avail the premium track of the Battle Pass which costs 2,800 V-Bucks or approximately $25. This lets players skip 25 tiers in an instant, thereby granting them the ability to start their grind to tier 100 a quarter of the way through already.

The Season 8 Battle Pass will be coming with all sorts of unique items that players can collect. From villainous skins such as Carnage down to ultra-vibrant unicorns, there’s a lot to cover in terms of variety. Marvel characters have always popped in and out of Fortnite, so it’s no surprise to have Carnage in for the ride. There are also the likes of characters that are unique to the storyline in Fortnite such as Charlotte and Fabio Sparklemane. Exclusive content is given in abundance to Fortnite players this time for those that get the premium Battle Pass, and the best part of all this is that they can earn free V-Bucks along the way that’s enough to purchase the next season’s Battle Pass.

It’s like a neverending cycle of getting free Battle Passes after every season!

A New Element

Perhaps the biggest change that’s coming to Season 8 is that there’s a new element coming called “The Sideways”. Described as a “monster-filled reality” that’s “dark” and “malevolent”, it’s what’s being spread by the cubes that are now creating chaos within Fortnite’s island. Players will be able to access them by entering through portals. With the addition of monster NPCs called Cube Monsters, features will include low gravity and the inability to build anything. This will certainly impact the different island locations.

At the very least, there’s still some fun to be had with “The Sideways” in the form of new weapons. Players can craft and create superpowered “sideways” weapons in Season 8 by accumulating a new crafting component from those areas. These new materials are called Cube Monster Parts. Oh, and don’t forget, classic guns such as the harpoon gun and automatic sniper rifle will be making a comeback.

This Means War

With the fate of the island up to the players, it’s your job to protect it. Since Season 8 is all about an all-out war against the Cubes, support from far and wide is needed if players want to secure a future for their beloved island. Since there will be fellow Loopers (players that go in and out of the portals) across the island, you have the option to donate the Bars that you earn to certain construction sites where Turret Stations will be built.

Final Thoughts

It’s certainly a bizarre time for Fortnite players this time around. With Chapter 2: Season 8 all about fighting back against the Cubes, one would think that the alien invasion that we had in the last season was so much better. Sure they abducted players into their mothership, but they at least gave them enhancements that ultimately buffed them.

But hey, at least there are some cool exclusive skins in the Battle Pass that aren’t available in the Fortnite Item Shop!

What do you think of Chapter 2: Season 8 of Fortnite so far? Let us know down below.

Fortnite Best Friendzy and Rewards

There’s a Best Friendzy event in Fortnite, and it requires players to actually play with a friend. It’s not exactly great for folks that prefer going solo, but at least there’s free stuff.

Saddle up Fortnite players, because there’s a new event in town. The two-week Best Friendzy event rewards players with all sorts of in-game cosmetics for free. That’s right, players can now get their mitts on some cool new stuff without having to pay or purchase anything from the Fortnite Item Shop now! Ever since Season 7, Fortnite has been offering its players a wide variety of new content that they’ve been experimenting with. The best part is, it’s not exclusive to players who have the Battle Pass. A prime example would be the Imposters game mode that we all know is an Among Us rip-off at this point, and there’s the upcoming Island Games event as well. So just what can we expect for the Best Friendzy event? Let’s find out.

What is the Fortnite Best Friendzy?

The Best Friendzy event is a new time-limited reward system in Fortnite which requires players to team up with anyone on their friend’s list together to receive points. If you’re more of a solo player, it’s time to change things up if you’re looking to get the in-game cosmetic items, because they’ll only be available during the event and can’t be purchased in the Fortnite Item Shop. Plus, getting a Victory Royale is so much better with friends!

Getting Started

To begin with, players have to visit the official Best Friendzy website and follow the instructions that will be provided to their Epic Games account. Once that’s over, Fortnite will be able to track their progression. After registering and logging into the Best Friendzy website, they’ll finally be able to earn the rewards. Their friends don’t need to register for you to see your progress together, but they have the option to track their progress. One thing to note about the status of one’s point progression is that players ought to expect a delay of about 30 minutes when it comes to updating their points on the website.

Point Progressions in Best Friendzy

A player’s point progression is based on the time that they’ve spent playing Fortnite together with a friend. For every 10 minutes that they have played together with a friend in the Battle Royale mode, they get to earn a point. For every 10 minutes that a player and their friend play together in the Creative mode, they also get a point, but they can only earn a maximum of 6 points per day in Fortnite’s Creative mode. As a bonus, Fortnite will be giving out 60 minutes worth of Daily Bonus wherein players will receive a 3x bonus for their time spent playing Fortnite. This means that for the next hour, players get to earn 3 points for every 10 minutes instead of just a single point.

Reaping the Rewards

Remember those points that have just been accumulating? Well, there’s a use for them! All of the points count towards the four new in-game items that players can redeem. The very best of the rewards have to be grinded for, unfortunately. But at the very least, they look pretty cool.

For just 3 points, players can get an Outer Space Handshake Emoticon that they can flex to other opponents or players in Battle Royale mode. Then there’s also the Invasion Remix Track which they can get for 10 points if they’re looking to turn things up in the music aspect. Players weren’t too keen on Wraps before, but they slowly warmed up to the idea of using it for their weapons. The Life’s a Beach Wrap which can be purchased for 20 points is the perfect cosmetic Wrap to sum up how life has been for some gamers over the last couple of years. And finally, there’s the Aquari-Axe Pickaxe which looks like it’s made out of Jello. That one is the most expensive out of the four free items that players get, amounting to a whopping 50 points.

Final Thoughts

For those who are interested in getting the free cosmetic items that can’t be found in the Fortnite Item Shop, the rewards will only be available from August 31 to September 12, so act quickly! Players have to make sure that they play with friends that are actually part of their friend’s list and to make the most out of their 60 minutes worth of Daily Bonus if they’re looking to gun the Aquari-Axe Pickaxe. What do you think of the Best Friendzy event? Are you thinking of partnering up with a buddy to get the rewards? Let us know down below.

Epic removes Fortnite from mobile app stores to prepare for own store launch

Epic Games is pulling Fortnite and other games from mobile app stores ahead of the launch of its own digital storefront on iOS and Android.

Epic also revealed it would be removing Fortnite and its other titles from the Samsung Galaxy store due to the company's decision to block side-loading by default on Samsung devices.

Epic pulls Fortnite from "rent collector" mobile stores as it readies own shop

This summer, Epic Games finally gets its wish when, thanks to new EU regulations, it's launching its own digital store on iOS and Android. And ahead of its arrival, the company has announced it's removing Fortnite and other Epic games from what it calls "rent collector" competing stores, "even if those stores offer us a special deal for our own games."

In its announcement post, Epic first confirms developers selling games on its on its new mobile store will be subject to the same 12 percent fee seen on its PC digital storefront (zero percent if a developer uses a third-party payment system). It then reveals plans to pull its own games from some competing stores. More specifically, it says it'll be "ending distribution partnerships with mobile stores that serve as rent collectors without competing robustly and serving all developers fairly, even if those stores offer us a special deal for our own games."

It's also pulling Fortnite and its other titles from the Samsung Galaxy Store, in what it calls "protest of Samsung's anticompetitive decision to block side-loading by default" on its devices. Conversely, Epic says it's planning to brings its own mobile games to stores that "give all developers a great deal". One of these will be the indie-focused AltStore.

Fortnite's new mode saw over a million players this weekend

Fortnite has launched a major new battle royale mode, Reload, which drew in more than a million players to the game over the weekend.

Available in both regular and Zero Build variants, Reload is a smaller-scale battle royale option with 40 players organised into 10 squads, with respawns enabled if at least one team member is still alive.

If that sounds familiar, it's because Reload is very much inspired by Call of Duty: Warzone's popular Resurgence mode, which offers very similar mechanics. Respawning isn't instant and requires a wait time which increases over the match - though aggressive play can reduce it, if your teammates take out other players or entire squads.

Fortnite's Pirates of the Caribbean crossover launches next month

Pirates of the Caribbean is coming to Fortnite next month.

Last week's update to Fortnite included characters and content set to be part of the crossover, and initially an event pass featuring Captain Jack Sparrow was made available to buy. Dataminers quickly discovered other characters set to arrive as well, solidifying rumours that emerged several months back when Fortnite's 2024 roadmap first leaked.

Now, acknowledging the event pass' early sale, developer Epic Games has confirmed the crossover's official release: 19th July.

Fortnite Reload je rychlejší a konkurenceschopnější verze původního Battle Royale režimu

Fortnite přidává nový režim Battle Royale nazvaný „Reload“, který obsahuje jedinečný soutěžní mechanismus a zároveň ukazuje určitou podobnost s ikonickým režimem „Team Rumble“.

Epic says it's bringing Fortnite and the Epic Games Store to iOS in the UK next year

Epic has announced it's bringing Fortnite back to iOS devices in the UK at some point "in the second half of 2025" - and launching its Epic Games Store on the platform at the same time - as the UK's Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act passes into law.

The new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act gives the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) - the regulatory body that made headlines when it initially blocked Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard - new powers to prevent tech giants from using their position to disadvantage competitors and consumers.

As per the government's announcement, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act could "give consumers the room to freely choose the services they use, or stop companies from withholding information consumers need to make good decisions." It also gives the CMA powers "to intervene and direct a firm to change its behaviour to boost competition – whether that is to benefit people using smartphones or businesses dependent on cloud services."

Fortnite's new season adds Fallout Nuka-Cola, as files point to upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean crossover

Infused with Mad Max-y vibes, Fortnite's new season is here - bringing with it the game's Fallout crossover.

We knew to expect the Fallout T-60 Power Armour, and now know the iconic suit is its own skin in the game, not a power-up. Joining it are a range of other punky wasteland warriors, Magneto from the X-Men, and a character named Peabody that's a pod of... peas.

Speaking of power-ups, Fallout's Nuka-Cola is available for you to chug as a health power-up, while the new Nitro power-up will buff both you (your speed, knockback, stamina rate, reload speed and fall damage immunity) and your vehicle (speed, ramming power, fuel consumption, attack mods).

Fortnite's new season adds War Buses, rocket-propelled fists, and a lawless desert biome

We've known for some time that Fallout was coming to Fortnite, we just weren't entirely sure in what capacity. Well, now we know that this season's wasteland offerings take the form of a sort of Mad Max meets Fallout meets Borderlands- battle royale affair. There's a big emphasis on deserts and vehicles, basically, with highlights including: mechanical fists, turrets on cars, and the possibility of manning one of two War Buses that patrol the reworked map.

Where to find Slurp Cactus in Fortnite

Where to find Slurp Cactus in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3

Once you find Slurp Cactus in Fortnite, they can help you gain shields and finish a weekly quest. Here's where to spot them in this big battle royale open world.

Slurp Cactus in Fortnite location

The Slurp Cactus is a new interactive object in Fortnite that lets you gain shields after ramming it with a vehicle or hitting it with a weapon. They can be found all over the new desert area to the south of the Chapter 5 Season 3 map. Find a car near a location like the Nitrodome and while driving, look on both sides of the road. You'll see cacti that have blue gooey leaves on them. Ram into these plants and you'll gain a shield boost.

One of the Weekly Quests asks you to restore 300 health or shields with the Slurp Cactus. Once this is completed, you'll net yourself 15,000 XP. It also accounts for the bonus goals, which ask you to complete a certain amount of Weekly Quests. If you finish 12, for example, there is a 25K experience bonus.

Other Weekly Quests in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3

The other weekly quests in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 are a cakewalk. Nitro Fists are a new weapon in the game that let you punch your foes to elimination. Get 400 damage with the Nitro Fists, and you'll get yourself another 15K experience points. The best way to take them out is to uppercut them, then smash your fists down while you're in the air.

Additionally, you can damage opponents with your car by either ramming them or modding a weapon to the top of your vehicle. You can collect them from boxes strewn throughout the map. Another quest is to go through a Flaming Boost Hoop.

Fallout is coming to Fortnite

In news that should be of no surprise to anyone given Fortnite's all-consuming nature, post-apocalyptic RPG series Fallout will soon be making an appearance in the battle royale game.

Fallout is, of course, currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance thanks to Amazon's recent live-action TV adaptation, making it a prime target for the popularity vampire that is Fortnite.

Fortnite's impending Fallout collaboration was teased on its official X account, where a winky face and thumbs-up emoji (squint a bit and it could be Vault Boy) accompanied an image of someone in T-60 power armour staring pensively out of frame amid clouds of belching smoke.

Fortnite's latest live event kicks off countdown to Mad Max-esque new season

Fortnite players were last night treated to a mini live event, as the battle royale capped off its current Greek god season, and set up a grittier, heavy metal-infused new season to come.

The event seemed to show a moment of revenge from the now-felled Greek god Zeus, as his statue charged up the map's enormous Pandora's Box and unleashed a new threat to the Island.

The action began at 7pm UK time when, for the third day running, Zeus' giant statue atop Mount Olympus began glowing with light. In-game combat was temporarily paused as the statue raised its sword aloft and red lightning shot upwards - and then came crashing down onto Pandora's Box.

Rap star Doja Cat says only "horrible and garbage" players use Fortnite's most over-powered weapon

US rapper Doja Cat has fired off a series of social media posts blasting "horrible" and "garbage" Fortnite players who use the game's powerful (many would say over-powered) Chains of Hades weapon.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, whose hits include Say So, Paint the Town Red and Kiss Me More, posted a series of messages complaining about the Fortnite weapon in quick succession yesterday. A warning: Doja Cat uses extremely strong language which we reproduce below.

For the uninitiated, the Chains of Hades are a Greek god-themed whip weapon available this season with two uses: yoinking far-off players towards you, then following up with a blistering series of close-up swipes. They are really annoying... unless it's you using them.

Fortnite to appeal €1.1m fine over "unfair commercial practices aimed at children"

Fortnite maker Epic Games has said it will fight back against a €1.1m (£968k) fine levied by the Dutch consumer regulator, which has accused the company of "unfair commercial practices aimed at children".

An investigation by The Netherlands' Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) claims Epic Games "exploited the vulnerabilities of children" through "various design choices for its offerings in its Item Shop".

This included, the ACM says, using ads aimed at encouraging kids to make purchases with slogans such as "get it now", and "misleading" sale countdown timers that gave the impression certain items would be removed from sale before they ultimately were. The ACM states Fortnite therefore violated "requirements of professional diligence".

Fallout Looks to Be Coming to Fortnite Season 3 Wrecked

Fallout and Fortnite Tease Chapter 5 Season 3 Wrecked

Epic Games is teasing a surprising, timely crossover seemingly coming to Fortnite Battle Royale in the near future. It looks like the two massive franchises Fortnite and Fallout will be coming together for an event, though there is no release window or date for the crossover just yet.

The Fortnite and Fallout tease began with a short tweet from Epic Games with an image. The image appears to showcase one of the Brotherhood of Steel members from the Fallout series, but in the Fortnite style. This looks to be hinting at a likely skin players will be able to get in the near future.

In addition to that, the image showcases a factory-like location of some kind underneath the Brotherhood of Steel member. This spot could be a brand new location in the upcoming Chapter 5 Season 3 Wrecked. As a result, it is possible this upcoming post-apocalyptic-themed season will feature a massive crossover with Fallout.

Here is the official teaser. It also features emojis that recreate the Vault Boy expression of a person winking while giving a thumbs-up sign.

https://twitter.com/fortnitegame/status/1791499072789979575?s=61&t=9YBio6l0V75AlnyR8nX7jQ

This possible Fortnite and Fallout crossover season could feature Wasteland-themed locations from the Bethesda series, plus a Brotherhood of Steel skin possibly in the new Battle Pass. This timing makes a lot of sense, too, with the recent Fallout Prime Video TV series. Fortunately, it won’t take long for players to find out if this is the case, since the new season is coming out in the near future.

Fans can look forward to the release of Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 Wrecked on May 24, 2024. Fortnite and Fallout fans alike should wait until then for more info on how this teased crossover event will work.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 is coming to Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Unreal Engine 5.4: Epic's latest revision delivers big performance and feature wins

Unreal Engine 5 has reached a new milestone release, version 5.4. Alongside technology that sets the groundwork for future iterations of the engine, developer Epic Games is promising substantial performance improvements with better CPU utilisation, potentially solving a common bugbear we've seen on PC and consoles this generation. Of course, the new release also includes visual improvements, including to the Nanite geometry system and Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) upscaling. We've tested this latest engine revision to see how everything works and to get a sense of the kind of performance improvements that might be possible in the new version.

As stunning as it was, the first Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5.0 demo back in 2021 already exhibited the core performance issues that Epic is looking to address with 5.4. Moving through the Matrix demo city at speed on PlayStation 5 was enough to cause precipitous performance drops, as the engine grapples with loading in new areas. This is just a demo, of course, not a shipping game, but the sub-30fps readouts and frame-time stutters coupled with dynamic resolution scaling suggested a severe CPU limitation on console hardware. This was confirmed with the City Sample demo on PC in 2022, where simple CPU and GPU utilisation metrics show severe CPU bottlenecking even on powerful modern CPUs like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

Logically, this makes sense. A lot of the most prominent UE5 features have significant CPU components, like MetaHuman, open world streaming, hardware ray tracing and Nanite, and therefore place a heavy demand on CPU performance. More critically, you tend to be limited by single-thread performance, so higher core count CPUs aren't able to meaningfully scale by spreading the load across multiple cores and threads. Given that both budget PCs and consoles tend to have core counts in the six to eight range and an increasing number of Unreal Engine 5 games are coming to market, that's a lot of untapped performance potential.

How many of these forgotten Fallout crossovers do you remember?

Recently, because I hate myself, I was browsing Twitter (I’m not calling it X) and I stumbled across an incredible conceptual video from an artist named DEVINK that shows what they imagine a potential Fortnite X Fallout crossover could look like.

This crossover seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me and I wouldn't be surprised if something like this happened in the future, but what about Fallout crossovers from the past? Well that's what I'm exploring in today's video (above) so please do give it a click and see if you remember any of the seven forgotten Fallout crossovers that feature within.

These crossovers range from an excellent and highly detailed Minecraft mash-up and some fairly fancy, but almost definitely forgotten cosmetics for Brink, through to what can only be described as one of the most haunting pieces of headwear for the Xbox 360 Avatars that I ever did see.

Fortnite's huge Star Wars event lets you wear Yoda in a backpack, for a price

Today brings Fortnite's biggest Star Wars crossover yet, with new content from the galaxy far, far away in all of the game's four main modes.

Access to play most of this content is free, including Lego Fortnite's major new Star Wars world, but there's also more than £60 of new cosmetic items to splash your cash on, should you fancy.

In terms of skins, there's a new version of Luke Skywalker available featuring his Return of Jedi swamp clothes - and most notably, featuring Yoda as a backpack. The Dagobah Luke bundle includes the Jedi apprentice and wizened Muppet master for 1800 V-Bucks (around a tenner). I feel like this really could have been a new style for the existing Luke skin, especially as Yoda is available separately (for 1000 V-Bucks). Epic Games may be hoping you cough up for Yoda then choose to grab the new Luke bundle to get his skin for just 800 more.
