The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This series remained at Number 2 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a fourth week in a row and it has averaged an estimated 1.2 billion minutes of viewing per week so far in its fourth season. The show has been renewed for a fifth and final season, and the prequel series Vought Rising has been announced with more spin-offs likely to follow.
Supacell (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This British superhero entry improved to Number 3 for its second week in the Nielsen chart with 806 million minutes of viewing. It has dropped to Number 10 in the Netflix chart, but with a six-week run there so far, its chances of renewal look good at this point.
Snowpiercer (AMC, Status: Cancelled): This show is airing its fourth and final season on AMC after it was dropped by TNT as that cable network moves away from scripted programming. I have not seen any linear viewing numbers for the current season yet seeing as the Nielsen ratings have been hard to come by lately. But there were talks of a prequel and sequel series, so if it performs well on AMC, perhaps that will keep the franchise on track. I will continue to keep an eye out for any ratings data that is available.

HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon will continue to a fourth season and that will be its last. It was already counting as renewed for the 2023-24 season, though, so that will not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. I had been tracking Superman & Lois in the 2023-24 season, but since its final season premiere was moved to Fall 2024, I have removed that one from the tally. The numbers currently stand at 34 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (44% of shows tracked) vs. 20 cancelled and ending (26%). Před několika týdny vyšla poslední epizoda čtvrté řady seriálu The Boys (Banda), která nezanechala naše hrdiny zrovna v nejlepší situaci. I my bychom si samozřejmě strašně přáli, aby řada pátá, která bude už finálová, k nám dorazila co nejdříve, ovšem zdá se, že se budeme muset obrnit trpělivostí, protože pátá sezóna zřejmě dorazí až někdy v roce 2026. Mnozí fanoušci už samozřejmě debatují o tom, co vlastně poslední řada nabídne, diskuze to jsou častokrát obzvlášť zajímavé už jen vzhledem k faktu, že seriál po ní definitivně skončí.
O velkém finále každopádně mluvil i seriálový tvůrce a scenárista Eric Kripke, který poskytl rozhovor serveru GamesRadar+. Podle něj se mohou fanoušci těšit na „supervelkou“ a „apokalyptickou“ sezónu, která bude plná nečekaných zvratů. Spolu s dalšími scenáristy se mu také zamlouvá myšlenka, že jelikož se jedná o poslední sezónu, budou mít možnost nechat zemřít jakoukoliv postavu, tudíž v bezpečí zřejmě opravdu nebude absolutně nikdo.
S poslední sezónou ale samozřejmě přichází obzvlášť velká výzva, ve které už mnohé podobně populární seriály selhaly. A to nadělit fanouškům vhodné a řádně uspokojivé zakončení. Bohužel se už nejednou stalo, že zde byly seriálové tituly, které byly sice obecně skvělé, ale jejich finále stálo za starou bačkoru, mezi nejznámější příklady patří třeba Dexter (2006) a Hra o trůny (2011).
Kripke si to podle všeho moc dobře uvědomuje, sám prohlásil, že závěry mnohých seriálů stojí za prd, protože je opravdu velice těžké je pořádně ukončit. Přiznal, že cítí, jaký je na něj vyvíjen tlak, aby seriál skutečně skončil co nejuspokojivěji. Zároveň je ale velice vděčný Amazonu za to, že mu dovolil seriál ukončit za jejich vlastních podmínek a nenutí ho dojit ho donekonečna. Celkově Kripke chce, aby diváci po závěrečné řadě mluvili o The Boys jako o ,,skvělém seriálu", nikoliv jako seriálu, ,,který byl sice skvělý, ale jeho konec stál za ho*no".
Budeme tvůrcům každopádně pevně držet palce, aby jim finále vyšlo na jedničku, byla by nesmírná škoda, kdyby to na úplném konci pohnojili.

It pulled in an estimated 549 million minutes of viewing, and the show has spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 so far. Series creator Rapman is hoping that this one will go for at least three seasons and that does look like a real possibility at this point.
The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This show held at Number 2 for a third week in a row, adding on another 1.2 billion minutes of viewership. It has already been renewed for a fifth and final season, and a prequel series was announced this past weekend at Comic Con.
House of the Dragon (HBO, Status: Renewed): This show slipped to Number 4 for its third week in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, though it pulled in over one billion minutes in viewing. It has averaged a 0.34 rating based on same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic and 1.3 million total viewers so far, and it has already been renewed for a third season with a fourth looking likely as well.
The Dragon Prince (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This fantasy entry did not make into the Netflix Top 10 for the week of its sixth season premiere, but that is not uncommon for animated shows. It has already been renewed through its seventh and final season which will give it the chance to wrap up its storylines.

At Comic Con this past weekend, renewal announcements came in for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (AMC), Blood of Zeus (Netflix), Invincible (Prime Video), Solar Opposites (Hulu), and Krapopolis (FOX). Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This superhero satire entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its fourth season premiere. It landed at Number 2 with an estimated 1.2 billion minutes watched across just four days. The show has been renewed for a fifth and final season, and I expect it to continue on with spin-offs for several years.
House of the Dragon (HBO, Status: Renewed): This show entered the Nielsen Rankings under the Acquired shows for its run on Max at the Number 8 with 741 million minutes watched. That represents just one evening for viewing for the second season premiere plus any of the first season episodes that were streamed that week. The linear ratings have not been as strong, but not surprisingly this one has already been renewed for a third season.
Supacell (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This British-made series has now spent three weeks in the Netflix Top 10, two at the Number 1 slot. There has been no word on a second-season renewal at this point, but I expect that the streamer will be interested in bringing this one back.
Futurama (Hulu, Status: Renewed): This animated sci fi comedy slipped into the Nielsen Rankings at Number 10 with 241 million minutes of viewing over a month and a half before its twelfth season premiere. It has already been renewed for two more seasons, so the hi-jinks should continue for several more years.
Scavengers Reign (Max/Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This animated sci fi series has not made it into the Netflix Top 10 in its encore run on that streaming service which definitely puts a damper on the hopes that it would get a second season. However, it did just get an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program which could give it a boost. Fans should definitely take the opportunity to get the show trending on the social networks and bring it more attention in an attempt to convince Netflix to keep it going.

On Monday, the cancellation of Syfy’s horror dramedy Reginald the Vampire was announced which brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season to 20 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (28% of shows tracked) vs. 29 renewed (40%). Na letošním Comic-Conu se mluvilo i o seriálu The Boys (Banda), jemuž přednedávnem skončila čtvrtá a předposlední řada. Dospělácké univerzum superhrdinů se samozřejmě rozšiřuje i na jiných frontách, nejenže je už ve výrobě druhá řada spin-offu Gen V (2023), ale také se můžeme těšit na podívanou jménem The Boys: Mexico.
A z letošního Comic-Conu nyní přichází informace, že původní seriál dostane prequel. Tím bude série jménem Vought Rising, přičemž už je potvrzené, že v něm uvidíme dva staré známé. Jmenovitě se vrátí Jensen Ackles jako drsňák Soldier Boy a Aya Cash jako náckovská superhrdinka Stormfront. Ackles zároveň potvrdil, že se objeví i v chystané páté řadě původního seriálu, která bude zároveň finálová.

Příští týden nás čeká vyloženě libová seriálová nadílka. Nejenže vyjde druhá řada Rodu Draka (2022), ale také se k nám konečně dovalí i čtvrtá sezóna dospěláckého seriálu The Boys (2019), která bude premiérovat na službě Prime Video. Amazon se proto rozhodl vydat krátký klip z jedné z epizod, kterou si můžete pustit výše.
Na scénu se tak vrací Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), jenž se v klipu pokouší dostat Ryana (Cameron Crovetti) pod svá ochranná křídla, ale chlapce má bohužel kolem prstu dokonale omotaného jeho otec Homelander (Antony Starr), který si Billyho bezmoc náležitě užívá. A samozřejmě nezapomene zmínit chmurný fakt, že kvůli nadměrnému užívání Compoundu V zbývá Billymu už jen několik měsíců života. Z traileru ale víme, že Billy se dozví o existenci viru, jenž zabijí superlidi, bude to ale stačit k Homelanderově porážce?
To holt uvidíme, kromě výše zmíněných postav se ještě vrací hrdinové Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) a Starlight (Erin Moriarty).
Z nováčků se nám představí Joe Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Firecracker (Valorie Curry) a Sister Sage (Susan Heyward).
Dále se ještě vrací Dále se vrací Claudia Doumit jako Victoria Neuman, Chace Crawford jako The Deep, Jessie T. Usher jako A-Train, Colby Minifie jako Ashley Barrett a Nathan Mitchell jako nový Black Noir. Eric Kripke jeden z tvůrců seriálu, už připravuje pátou řadu.

I joined NetherRealm Studios not knowing what I’d be working on. So, first morning, I was stunned to learn what felt like everything at once about Mortal Kombat 1. And I was beyond excited to work on Homelander as an upcoming guest fighter.
I’ve often recommended “The Boys” by claiming Homelander as one of the great characters in modern fiction. If Butcher is Ahab and The Boys his Pequod, Homelander makes a helluva white whale. Through the monstrous indulgence across each aspect of the character, from the writing to costuming to the performance above all, Homelander becomes a blank canvas for any interpretation you like. This includes the obvious ones the show invites; he’s wearing stars and stripes, after all. You can draw a line from the groundbreaking superhero deconstruction in “Watchmen” to the terminal cynicism of “The Boys.” Both stories repurpose archetypes of prior eras to ask some unsettling questions. Which is more likely, that a real costumed vigilante would be a heroic idealist, or a net danger to others? Would Superman worry about gauzy American values, or about the stock price of the research conglomerate that made him?
So, I’m happy to go book-club with Homelander, but that isn’t what got us in the door. We’re here because Homelander is awesome, great, and terrible, in the way a nova or rogue wave or H-bomb has those qualities. He is the merciless last boss of a story with no credible heroes in sight. That’s what punches our ticket. Later, we can see he’s lonely, juvenile, and tortured, despite unmatchable powers… that he’s, if not sympathetic, at least understandable. Few people would choose the life that made him so strong but so cruel. And what better fit could there be for Mortal Kombat, a hard-edged universe where we sometimes half-joke there are no good guys?
After careful preparation, we began work. Nailing tone was key. “Does this feel like Homelander?” Was our guiding-light question applied to everything: poses, movement, sound effects, facial expressions, hand gestures, even the set of a shoulder or angle of a dangling foot. Homelander’s central emotion is a bottomless contempt, which he struggles to hide for the sake of appearance. Watching that mask slip is the show’s core tension (and most perverse joy), and we strove to maintain that here.
And that’s before we get into his arsenal. It’s an amusing task translating Homelander into a game like Mortal Kombat 1 – in “The Boys,” he’s so strong that few encounters actually become fights, so there aren’t many direct attack pose references. This of course was not a problem developing his Fatalities and Brutalities. Homelander carelessly dispatches most would-be attackers with a laser-eye flicker or casual neck-snapping. Even against other ‘supes,’ he usually deters futile confrontations by merely enkindling his eyes or waving a hand. With few exceptions we won’t spoil, Homelander lacks credible foes, and he knows it. So, we leaned heavily on the fighting references that do exist, laying the foundation of his kit with the haymakers he uses in the show’s most intense battles. We pepper in his disdain with some slapping and shoving attacks, more insulting techniques than a Lin Kuei or Shirai Ryu would dare use. And it was a no-brainer to include several versions of laser eyes, his most destructive and frequently used ability. Beyond that, we had to embellish, always still asking ”Is this Homelander?”
To emphasize his mobility and distinguish him from both Mortal Kombatmainstays and from other guests, we gave him unique flying poses and modes, so ”the only man in the sky” rightfully commands airspace better than anyone. Developing the game’s first flight mechanic naturally introduced complications. Art considerations involved how to distinguish flight visually – all sorts of animations depending on travel direction and what led into flight, mussed hair on Homelander himself while he’s airborne, and cape physics adjustments. These overlapped with technical tasks ensuring Homelander flies in the correct trajectory, with the right velocity, depending on the player’s inputs. Design considerations included setting when it should be possible to enter and exit flight and what Homelander is capable of while soaring.
To demonstrate how skeptically he regards challengers, we gave him a punch-specific counter pulled directly from a flashpoint moment in “The Boys”Season 3. As with flight, this is a small-seeming decision that leads inevitably to hurdles. No existing counter-style move needed to differentiate between punches or kicks, for starters, and it isn’t as simple as just checking if the incoming attack resulted from a punch or kick button, since some punch button attacks don’t result in punches, while some kick button attacks do. Plus, Homelander may attempt a punch counter with either his chest or back toward the player’s POV, while incoming punches may also likewise emerge from either chest-to-camera or ”flipped” stance. So, any given punch-versus-counter interaction has four different ways it can visually play out, therefore that many more possible outcomes to set up and quality-control.
“Catch punches and kick back” or “get a guy flying around” might sound like straightforward things. But implementing them was an interdepartmental effort between animators, designers, engineers, and QA to get great-looking and feeling results. We set out to spotlight Homelander’s most brutal exchanges and honor (or maybe appease?) him with novel spins on familiar mechanics, and we hope you agree.
Homelander will be available on June 4, 2024, as part of the early access period for Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack owners on Xbox Series X|S, followed by wide availability on June 11, 2024.

Loni na podzim jsme se dozvěděli, že dospělácký seriál The Boys (Banda) dostane v budoucnu ještě jeden seriálový spin-off, který zatím nese název The Boys: Mexico, přičemž už z podtitulu je jasné, že v něm tentokrát zavítáme k jižnímu sousedovi Spojených států. Na palubě už máme showrunnera a několik výkonných producentům, ale jak to se seriálem vypadá nyní?
Inu, z posledních zpráv se zdá, že fanoušci se budou muset obrnit trpělivostí, protože spin-off se na službě Prime Video jen tak brzy neobjeví. Podle slov Erica Kripkeho, jednoho z tvůrců původního seriálu, který poskytl rozhovoru serveru Entertainment Weekly, to vypadá, že seriál je ještě na míle vzdálený.
Námět celého projektu je sice slibný, ale tým výkonných producentů podle všeho teprve uzavírá smlouvu se scenáristou, který napíše pilotní epizodu. Pak se ještě musí připravit půda pro filmaře, který napíše další díl. Celkově se zdá, že tvůrci ještě musí dodělat základní strukturu celého spin-offu, která se prozatím zdá být nedokončená.
Další velkou výzvou bude zajištění toho, aby spin-off stál pořádně na vlastních nohou a nemusel se příliš opírat o původní seriál. Podle Kripkeho je třeba, aby si sérii mohli pořádně užít i diváci, kteří původní The Boys nikdy neviděli. Evidentně mají tvůrci před sebou ještě hromadu práce, tudíž bychom zřejmě měli počítat s několikaletým čekáním. Ale snad bude konečný výsledek stát za to.
První seriálový spin-off Gen V se každopádně povedl, budeme tudíž mexickým superhrdinům držet palce, aby také nezklamali. K projektu jsou jako výkonní producenti upsáni herci Diego Luna (Andor) a Gael García Bernal (Babel), kteří si v seriálu možná i zahrají nespecifikované vedlejší role.
Už za měsíc se na službě Prime Video objeví čtvrtá sezóna seriálu The Boys (Banda), která se nedávno pochlubila novým trailerem. A i přestože nová superhrdinská jízda pro dospělé publikum ještě nevyšla, Amazon už dal oficiálně zelenou také páté řadě. O té už každopádně mluvil i sám showrunner Eric Kripke, takže žádné velké překvapení to vlastně ani není. Vernon Sanders, šéf seriálové divize pro Amazon MGM Studios, uvedl následující:
,,Na tuto sérii, ze které se zrodila globální franšíza, jsme hrdí. A jsme také nadšení, že Eric Kripke a jeho tvůrčí tým mají pro všechny věrné fanoušky další poutavé příběhy.“
Zda bude chystaná pátá řada poslední, momentálně není známo, ale zatím to tak nevypadá. Seriál si ale i nadále udržuje skvělou kvalitu, takže zatím si stěžovat nemůžeme.

Čtvrtá řada dospěláckého seriálu The Boys (Banda) se nám kvůli loňským hollywoodským stávkám „krapet“ opozdila, v celé své kráse se nám ale představí už příští měsíc, kdy bude premiérovat na službě Amazon Prime Video. A na světě máme nový oficiální trailer, který opět dokazuje, že o pořádné superhrdinské násilí nebude nouze. Podívat se na něj můžete výše.
Na scénu se opět vrací drsňák Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) a jeho banda, kterou tvoří Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) a nově také Starlight (Erin Moriarty), která se k hrdinům připojila po událostech třetí řady.
Ti všichni vytáhnou do boje proti společnosti Vought a starému dobrému Homelanderovi (Antony Starr), který si k Butcherově nelibosti omotal kolem prstu svého syna Ryana (Cameron Crovetti), ten by měl v chystané čtvrté řadě údajně hrát mnohem větší roli.
Trailer také částečně zohlední události, ke kterým došlo v seriálovém spin-offu Gen V. Billy v ukázce mluví o viru, který dokáže zabíjet superlidi. A pokud jste spin-off viděli, tak víte, že

Nad jejich úlohami visí otazník, každopádně se jedná o postavy, které nepocházejí z původních komiksů. A jsou tam také neprůstřelné slepice a létající zabijácké ovce. Však to znáte, normálka.
