Lenovo Legion Slim 5 review: OLED gaming at a surprisingly low price

Lenovo Legion Slim 5 review: OLED gaming at a surprisingly low price

OLED monitors are truly the stuff of dreams. If you’re after crisp, beautiful colors, deep inky black tones, phenomenal response times, and top-tier refresh rates, no other panel tech even mildly comes close to delivering all those elements in one go. The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14APH8 pairs exactly that with an exceptionally low price tag, meaning this laptop offers extraordinary value already.

It’s not without fault, of course. Lenovo has certainly cut some corners to facilitate that heavy investment, particularly given that this OLED screen also comes with an impressive 2,880 x 1,800 resolution as well. For the money, though, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 is one of the best gaming laptops out there today.

Who’s it for then? Simply put, a gamer who’s not looking to waste any cash. The less budget you have, the more valuable that budget becomes, certainly when it comes to putting it in the right place. It’s a balancing act, making sure you don’t accidentally buy a laptop that has an obvious bottleneck, and Lenovo has worked hard to ensure that’s not going to happen.

There is one big caveat to that statement, but I’ll touch on that in the benchmark section. I’ve been testing the Legion Slim 5 for around two weeks now, using it as my daily driver at times, gaming on it at others, and have run it through all manner of benchmarks. I even managed to sneak in a few hours on Baldur’s Gate 3 with it as well.

Nvidia is working on a new, slightly slower, RTX 4070, says leak

Nvidia could be about to release a new slightly slower version of the RTX 4070, according to new rumors. A new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 variant could use slightly slower GDDR6 memory instead of the usual GDDR6X, which could result in a lower price for the new versions.

The rumor of a new variant of one of the best graphics cards you can buy will be sweet music to the ears of those who have been tempted by the RTX 4070 but have found its $550 price still too high. There's no guarantee Nvidia will drop the price of a slightly slower version, but we'd be surprised if a small saving didn't accompany the new card, if it does turn out to be real.

LG’s new OLED monitor tech doubles lifespan, triples brightness

LG’s new OLED monitor tech doubles lifespan, triples brightness

LG has announced that it's started mass production of its latest new Tandem LG OLED monitor panels, which bring a big increase in brightness, as well as a longer lifespan when compared to existing OLED technologies. The new type of OLED also reduces power consumption by 40%, making it incredibly useful for laptops and other mobile devices.

It's this focus on mobile devices that is actually the big caveat to this LG OLED news when it comes to the best gaming monitors in the world. That's because, while these panels are sure to make waves in the laptop world - it's already confirmed they're in the new Dell XPS 13 9345 - they aren't yet designed for use in desktop gaming monitors.

Nvidia fails to make list of top 100 most recognizable brands

Despite recently, albeit temporarily, becoming the most valuable company on the planet, Nvidia failed to make enough of an impact to become one of the top 100 most recognizable brands, according to Interbrand's 2023 report.

While it may make the best graphics cards, it appears as though Nvidia still has a lot more work to do in order to become a household name. Based on the latest results from Interbrand, it fails to register on the list of most recognizable brands from last year, but this could change over the coming 12 months.

AMD’s new Ryzen 5 9600X CPU just got benchmarked in this leak

AMD’s new Ryzen 5 9600X CPU just got benchmarked in this leak

It looks as though Zen 5 CPUs are already appearing in the wild, and a new AMD Ryzen 5 9600X engineering sample has reportedly just been put through its paces in a couple of benchmarks, including CPU-Z and AIDA64. The results appear to back up claims made by AMD when it first announced the new Ryzen 9000 series at Computex, as well as revealing some of the specs.

The new CPUs are scheduled to be released in July 2024, with Ryzen 9000 X3D CPUs reportedly coming a few months later, and we’re expecting them to make a big splash on our best gaming CPU guide when they’re finally unleashed. In this case, a six-core Granite Ridge AMD Ryzen CPU is shown in comparison to a Ryzen 5 7600X, showing a near doubling of the cache performance.

Acer Predator GM712 Projector review

Acer Predator GM712 Projector review

The Acer Predator GM712 is a confusing product to shop for. At the time of writing, there are two GM712s - the slightly cheaper MR.JUX11.001 and the pricier, newer MR.JUX11.002 I'm testing in this review. The main difference is that the 002 offers variable refresh rate (VRR) which I'll get onto below.

These two models are still available at retail stores simultaneously, and though the 02 is likely to replace the 01 entirely once stock runs out, the two products fall into different classes because of their prices. That’s a shame because the GM712 in its 01 configuration is spot on.

At under $1,000/£1,000, 4K with a 60 Hz refresh rate, fantastic color reproduction, and low latencies make it an incredibly appealing pick - easily one of the best gaming projectors. Especially for a pricing bracket that sorely needs some decent 4K gaming projector love. But what of the new GM712? Is it improved? I've tried it for gaming and streaming to find out.

AMD’s “even better” Ryzen X3D CPUs could be here in just three months

AMD’s “even better” Ryzen X3D CPUs could be here in just three months

AMD is reportedly planning to release its new lineup of Ryzen 9000 X3D CPUs in September 2024, a few months after the first Zen 5 chips are unleashed, and this time the chip maker says its 3D V-cache is going to be “even better” than on its current lineup of X3D processors. The news comes after AMD officially lifted the lid on its forthcoming lineup of Zen 5 AMD Ryzen CPUs at Computex, which it says are going to be released in July 2024.

AMD’s 3D V-cache is used in the company’s best gaming CPUs, which have the ‘X3D’ suffix at the end of their model names, and include a big helping of extra cache on top of the CPU cores. In our Ryzen 7 7800X3D review, we found that this tech substantially increased frame rates in some games, and it’s hoped that the next generation of AMD X3D CPUs will be even better for gaming.

This is an Asus laptop lid, and you can change the design any time

Asus has just potentially changed the design of laptop lids forever, showcasing a new colored E ink screen that takes over the whole lid. The new Project Dali system effectively enables you to put any colored artwork on an Asus gaming laptop lid, and it will stay there until you update it with a new design, even when the lid is closed or the laptop is unpowered.

We spotted the Asus Project Dali display while we were treading the show floor at Computex 2024, and we were wowed by the quality of the results, with Asus basically having a laptop lid art gallery on display in its booth. In the future, you could forget having just a manufacturer logo on the lids of the best gaming laptops, and instead just assume you can clad them in your own choice of artwork.

If you're after a great gaming CPU deal, look no further. Amazon has a ton of Intel processors on limited-time discounts right now, including $148.48 off the Intel Core i9 13900KF, bringing it down to $450.52.

While the Intel Core i9 13900KF may not occupy a spot on our best gaming CPU guide, this is largely because it was succeeded by the 14th gen i9 14900K. Intel's KF chips strip away the integrated graphics, meaning a discrete graphics card is required, but they come at a slightly lower MSRP to make up for the absence.

BenQ X500i Review: Affordable Excellence

BenQ X500i Review: Affordable Excellence

Now, straight up, let me just say, I might be in love with the BenQ X500i. It’s true, I’ve tested a huge amount of projectors and monitors in my time, but the X500i hits the sweet spot for pretty much everything. Price, performance, image quality, form factor, it ticks all the boxes.

It’s perfectly balanced, and if you’re looking for one of the best gaming projectors with 4K out there right now, there’s no doubt in my mind that this could well be it. It’s close to convincing me that I need to sling my 21:9 ultrawide monitor away for good, it’s that impressive.

It’s not flawless. It has a few minor issues, but on the whole, for a fairly respectable $1699/£1,499 fee, what you’re getting for that investment is seriously epic. Let’s take a step back for a moment though. If you’re new to the projector scene, I’m guessing your first question is going to be “Well why?”, why get a projector to begin with?

It is without a doubt, a luxury item. If you’ve already picked up the best gaming monitor, then going for something like a projector isn't warranted. These are halo products, for nerd dens, and evenings with your buds or your family, sitting back, enjoying your beverage of choice, and just crashing out with a bit of casual gaming, or movie entertainment on a 150-inch display. It is, just such an absolutely enjoyable thing to be able to do.

Before you make this your primary display for all things, bear in mind you will still find better specs with dedicated gaming monitors and displays. After all, projection has come a long way, but so too have PC screens, and it’s hard to compete with the refresh rates, color accuracy, and pixel densities dished out by some of the latest and greatest OLED tech. But, both of these products are designed with very different use cases in mind, and that’s ok.

One thing to add, like most things in the PC space, the more you invest, usually, the better the product. But there is a sweet spot, that some (not all) projectors inhabit, and thankfully I can say the X500i sits itself in that gap quite nicely.

Best gaming projectors 2024

Best gaming projectors 2024

The best gaming projectors can give you a huge and immersive picture without having to invest in a TV or monitor. Unlike home cinema projectors, projectors for gaming need to have a low input lag (we recommend under 30 milliseconds) to keep gameplay smooth and your responses fast with the best PC games.

Getting a projector is an investment in immersive HD, with dynamic color and contrast that brings a whole new dimension to your play, so that you can see every detail with absolute clarity. Some projectors also have the benefit of being portable, and as long as you have a large enough wall to project onto, you can take the big-screen experience with you.

Start with budget – how much have you got to spend? Then look at resolution – 4K projectors like the BenQ X3100i are optimum, while a portable 1080p option like the XGIMI Halo+ lets you game and watch for less. With the contrast ratio, the higher the better for deeper blacks and increased grayscale detail. Then there’s the refresh rate for smooth play, connectivity options, and, depending on the space you have available, the throw ratio.

Most gaming projectors also feature auto keystone correction, autofocus, and obstacle avoidance, so they more or less set themselves up, leaving you free to focus your attention on whatever console or PC game you’re in the massive display mood for.

Asus ROG Ally 2 could be revealed as soon as June 2024

Speculation is mounting that a ROG Ally 2 handheld will be revealed as early as Computex 2024 in June. While the latest rumors are based more on speculation than evidence, the timing would be ideal, especially following the rather catastrophic launch of the MSI Claw and the continued domination of Valve's Steam Deck.

Already one of the best handheld gaming PCs, the Asus ROG Ally boasts more power than the Steam Deck, but this Asus device also has an arguably worse OS in the form of Windows. As the market starts to wonder where and when the next generation of handhelds will be revealed, next month's Computex show in Taipei looks like a space to watch.

While you may proudly own one of the best graphics cards, Hades 2 makes it clear that such power isn't necessary. Like its predecessor, the requirements are easy to clear even for near decade-old machines, to the point where, right now, there isn't even a specific gaming CPU featured in the specs.

DDR4 vs DDR5 – which RAM to buy for gaming

Should I buy DDR4 or DDR5 RAM? That’s the question we’re going to answer here, with a focus on gaming. If you’re considering using Intel’s LGA1700 platform with its powerful 12th, 13th, and 14th gen CPUs, you’ll need to decide whether to use DDR4 or DDR5 memory. We're setting out to answer whether DDR5 is faster in games than DDR4, and if the extra premium is worth it.

If you already own a DDR4 rig, you could also potentially save some money on your PC hardware by transplanting your existing DDR4 sticks into your upgraded Intel PC, but is that a false economy for gaming? To find the best gaming RAM tech, we’ve put typical kits of each type of memory to the test to see if there’s any difference in gaming performance and, if so, to see whether it’s best to save some money and go with DDR4 or spend a little extra and use DDR5.

MSI just unlocked a 98% performance boost for some Intel CPUs

MSI just unlocked a 98% performance boost for some Intel CPUs

There's a new MSI motherboard BIOS available that lets users turn off current excursion protection (CEP) for non-K Intel CPUs. What does that mean? Well, it means that anyone that's using a non-K Intel CPU can now save power and reduce the heat of their system without performance taking a nosedive.

While this update doesn't currently affect any of the chips on our best gaming CPU guide, users of the likes of the Intel Core i5 14600 - the non-overclockable version of the Intel Core i5 14600K - have faced a problem if they found their system was running hotter or using more power than they would like.

With K-series chips, the user could just turn down the AC load line voltage on the chip and its power consumption and heat would correspondingly turn down, with performance only slightly being reduced, so long as CEP was disabled. However, for non-K chips, there has never been the ability to turn off CEP, and trying to just turn down the voltage with CEP enabled could see performance tank. It's this issue that the CEP update addresses.

Update your Nvidia GPU driver now to avoid these huge security risks

Driver updates aren't simply for improving game performance, sometime they're a necessity to keep you safe. Nvidia has published eight rather scary-sounding security vulnerabilities, but they've thankfully already been fixed, thanks to driver updates that are now ready to download across most operating systems.

Nvidia GPUs are used in some of the best graphics cards, but their supporting software can still be vulnerable to various exploits, and it's always worth keeping your drivers updated to the very latest versions.

Crucial T705 review – an SSD that puts speed above all

Crucial T705 review – an SSD that puts speed above all

After achieving the fastest speeds seen on a PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD with the T700, the Crucial T705 sees solid-state read and write speeds pushed further still. Now, we have a drive that runs just shy of twice as fast as the best examples of PCIe 4.0 storage. While this feat is impressive, though, its benefits are not immediately apparent, especially in gaming, and the potential for thermal throttling sandbags an otherwise excellent, if expensive, SSD.

Nvidia gaming GPUs now make just a sixth of the company’s revenue

Nvidia gaming GPUs now make just a sixth of the company’s revenue

The latest Nvidia earnings report is out and it shows the company is continuing to become less of a graphics card maker. and more of a maker of chips for data centers, at least when it comes to overall revenue. Revenue from gaming now makes up just one sixth (12%) of the company's total earnings, down from 28% the previous year.

Microsoft CPUs are coming and they will be made by Intel

Announced during its Intel Foundry event, Intel will be using some capacity at its foundries to manufacture Microsoft CPUs. While this kind of practice is common for competitors like TSMC, this deal marks the beginning of a significant shift in how Intel operates and could help stage something of a comeback for the company.

New optical disc has room for 1,000 copies of Baldur’s Gate 3

Optical discs, such as DVDs and Blu-rays, may have completely fallen out of favor in the PC games business over the last few years, but scientists have possibly thrown a lifeline to the rainbow-reflecting disc of yore. A peer-reviewed paper shows the potential for a new optical disc that contains a massive petabit of data, which translates to 125TB. That’s enough room to contain 1,000 copies of Baldur’s gate 3.

Best gaming mouse pad in 2024

Best gaming mouse pad in 2024

Having one of the best gaming mouse pads is essential if you want pixel-precise mouse movements and a comfortable gaming setup. Mouse mats have come a long way from the boring, floppy foam things they once were. Nowadays, they’re customizable and come in a range of designs and colors.

Drawing on years of gaming experience and hours of testing, we’ve picked out the best mouse pads for gaming from Razer, Logitech, and even Amazon basics – so you’ll find one to suit your needs and budget. All the products we’ve chosen look great too, so they’ll be a welcome addition to the best gaming desk.

Generally speaking, mouse pads aren’t expensive. Basic, budget options start at around $15 (£15), but if you can stretch to $50 (£50) you'll get a larger pad that can house your gaming keyboard too – plus stunning RGB lighting. Start by working out which mouse pad size will best fit on your desk, then look at whether you want a hard vs soft mouse pad to play the best PC games.

A decent mouse mat offers a smooth surface for your gaming mouse to glide around on, and gives you more control when it counts, especially if you regularly delve into the best FPS games.

Win a limited edition Starfield Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Win a limited edition Starfield Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Don't worry, you're not suffering from deja vu, Bethesda is once again giving away a limited edition Starfield AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Ryzen 7 7800X3D. This time, it's to celebrate the release of the latest game update, which introduces AMD FSR 3, and hopefully, much-improved PC performance.

We consider the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D to be the best gaming CPU available right now, while the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is one of the best graphics cards too, if you're not so fussed about peak ray tracing performance. Plus, that card has been made all the better with the launch of AMD FSR 3, though the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super and its ray-tracing superiority continue to make it the more tempting alternative for a similar MSRP.

AMD AI processor monitoring coming to Windows to confuse us all

AMD AI processor monitoring coming to Windows to confuse us all

Like it or not, AI and AI-accelerating processors are here to stay, and Microsoft has embraced that fact by recently adding a new section to Task Manager that allows you to monitor AI chip usage, just as you can for CPU and GPU load. Up until now, though, this only supported Intel's NPUs, but AMD has just announced it's been working with Microsoft to include AMD AI monitoring in an upcoming Windows update.

Huge Lenovo Legion Go price cut could be a sign of things to come

Huge Lenovo Legion Go price cut could be a sign of things to come

Despite only releasing in October 2023, one of the big names in the handheld gaming PC market appears to be considering big price cuts. This Lenovo Legion Go deal is live in Germany and may have already sold out, but it speaks volumes to how far some brands need to go in order to keep up with the Steam Deck and upcoming devices like the MSI Claw.

As one of the best handheld gaming PCs, the Legion Go and its 8.8-inch, 1600p display towers over the competition, quite literally. It also has a battery larger than the ROG Ally, but it is not enough to compete with the well-rounded Steam Deck OLED, especially when it has a higher MSRP. This is where the current Legion Go deal comes into play because if we're lucky, it could spread out across multiple markets to get more devices into players' hands.

FFVII Rebirth collector’s edition Samsung SSD is just a fancy box

FFVII Rebirth collector’s edition Samsung SSD is just a fancy box

The collector's edition market used to be exciting until it became oversaturated and died a slow and painful death. Now, it's hard to even get a physical release for some games, while hardware editions seem to have been reduced to statement pieces alone (I'm looking at you, Razer Blade Lamborghini edition), and the FFVII Rebirth Samsung SSD is a pitiful effort at best.

While the  Samsung 990 Pro is arguably one of the best gaming SSD options, nearly maxing out the bandwidth of the 4x PCIe 4 bus, and being compatible with both PC and PS5, there's no excuse for the lack of effort in this collaboration. Rather than offering any kind of on-product branding to help it stand out from any other 2TB 990 Pro, instead, your SSD will simply arrive in an FFVII Rebirth branded cube.

Popular VR accessory is such a hit, you need to be invited to buy one

Popular VR accessory is such a hit, you need to be invited to buy one

There's nothing quite like the immersion of an FPS in virtual reality, but over time, the act of holding your arms up as though you're wielding a gun can be quite the strain. This is where Wield VR and the OneStock come in, a revolutionary new VR accessory that's proving difficult to get a hold of, largely due to its already booming popularity.

If you're going to play on one of the best VR headsets, your accessory game needs to level up too, and the OneStock is exactly what you need if you're a fan of FPS games in VR. It takes what can be an awkward experience and turns it into something tangible.

Nightingale removes AMD FSR 3 support right before launch

Nightingale removes AMD FSR 3 support right before launch

We usually talk about games adding in upscaling measures right before a launch, but in a strange and unfortunate twist, Nightingale developer Inflexion Games is removing AMD FSR 3 due to crash data it has analyzed.

Nightingale is aiming to become one of the best survival games on PC, but until it figures out the underlying problem with AMD FSR 3, some players might find the best performance hard to come by. The Nightingale system requirements don't suggest you'll need an overpowered gaming PC to get it running, but upscaling and frame generation tech is a useful tool for improving game performance no matter the base strength of your rig.
