NekoJonez’s Top 10 Games of 2024

Od: NekoJonez

It’s that time of year again, a full year has passed. Normally, I publish these articles a lot sooner, but I took full advantage of my Christmas break… And after that, I had some problems with my internet connection. But now I’m back. And it’s about time I talk about my top 10 games I have played in 2024. The rules of this list state I don’t have to have beaten the game. Yet, I must have played the game for the first time from January 1st, 2024. This means that games released before 2024, but I have only started to play in 2024 are fair game. This list is my personal opinion, and I’m open to hear your opinion on my picks. Feel free to also add your own list down in the comment section. So, here we go, the big list. A list that I always have trouble in creating at the end of the year. As an editorial note, the listed platform in this article is the platform I played the game on. Not all the platforms the game released on. The date after it, is the release date for said platform.

#10 – Persona 5 – Tactica (PlayStation 4 – November 2023)

I have played Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5 Strikers and I fell in love with the cast of Persona 5. And then, a new game got released with the Persona 5 cast and I jumped for joy.

The gameplay might not be my most favorite style of playing, but the game is quite addictive. It’s basically Persona in a Fire Emblem jacket. I’m now mid-way through the game but got distracted by other games. I can’t wait to finish this game in 2025. The story is quite well written. It is an amazing spin-off story for Joker and the gang.

Now, I won’t go too much in depth since I’m planning to write an article about this game. So, I’ll talk more in depth about this game soon. But, now… it’s time to save Joker from his forced wedding.

#9 – Slay the Princess – The Pristine Cut (Nintendo Switch – October 2024)

How do I explain this game without spoiling it too much? Slay the Princess is a game where you almost Groundhog Day your way through the same story. You walk up to a cabin, where you go to the basement to Slay the Princess.

According to the narrator, the Princess is a danger to the existence of the world. So, you have been sent to slay her. But, depending on the questions you ask, the decisions you take and even the order of your actions… The ending is different.

The story is just insane. It keeps you on edge what will be different in the next round. And the humor and writing in this game is just amazing. The voice action is just amazing. It brings the black, gray and white art to live and pulls you in the atmosphere quite well.

So, if you enjoy narrative games that mess with your head and expectations, give this game a try. Since, it’s a really good one.

#8 – Another Code – Recollection (Nintendo Switch – January 2024)

My first impression

Cing was an amazing developer that sadly went bankrupt. They developed amazing games on the Nintendo DS and Wii like Another Code – R & Little King Story. But to me, the Another Code set of games is one of their best work.

When we got a total remake in 2024, I wanted to play it right away. I convinced my streaming friend Klamath to play this game with me live on stream. I have to tell you, they did the two games justice. I’m so glad that these two games saw the light of day again.

While I have beaten the originals, the new and improved version is just amazing. It has a strong message and is a blast to play through. Although it sounds like a boring setup, it’s a game full of surprises. It is a more relaxing and charming game. It is more grounded and keeps things realistic. The characters are well written and set in a charming world.

#7 – Hypnospace Outlaw (PC – March 2019)

My review

Trying to manage a community isn’t an easy task to do. It’s a fun challenge to do in a game. That’s why management simulators are so popular.

But, combine that with the old school internet from the time I was a young kid, I am beyond intrigued. So, we have to report and clean up personal websites and projects? As a creative, I have my own place on the internet. I can share my opinions there. This hits close to home.

I wrote my opinion on this game in my review. If you want to know more about this game, I highly recommend that you give my review a read.

Now, there is a sequel in development called DreamSettler. If that’s created with the same love and care for that time period, and it matches the devotion this game has for its time period, it will be thrilling. We are going to be in for a wild ride.

#6 – Palworld (PC – January 2024)

Wishes for future updates

Sometimes, all that I need is a good open world game with unique mechanics. A world where you have to survive and explore. This year, Palworld brought that to me.

At first, I was skeptical. I thought: “This is going to be a monster catching game and nothing too much more.” But the more this game got developed, this more things got added that gave more depth to the game. More fun things to do, more polish to the game.

I have lost countless hours during this summer playing this game. It was an amazing time sink for the base game that is already here. A lot more is coming in the future. I wonder what the final game will be.

#5 – The Legend of Zelda – Echoes of Wisdom (Nintendo Switch – September 2024)

My first impression

Okay, this might be an upset. Usually, I place new Zelda games quite high on my list. But, this time I place it right in the middle. This year had a lot of amazing games. I had a lot of fun with this title in 2024.

I dropped it for now. I got distracted by other games and I forgot that I was playing through this game. I have placed it on my top 10 list. It rightfully deserves a spot on that list. I want to finish this game for real.

Since, the concept of Echoes of Wisdom is just amazing. What I love most is that this is a totally new 2.5D Zelda game like the classic games. I hope that the reception of this game is enough for Nintendo to still make 2.5D and 3D Zelda titles. Since, both have their place in the market and with this amazing title.

#4 – Spirit Hunter Chapter 3: Death Mark II (Nintendo Switch – February 2024)

My review

The Spirit Hunter series is one of the best horror visual novel series. This game ensures you don’t need to have played the original Death Mark. It’s excellent because you can still understand what’s happening in the story.

The game takes a lot of steps forward and makes the game have more meat around its bones. Walking around in the locations is a lot more fun in this title.

Some game mechanics are underused. For example, the jumpscares and the padding aren’t always present in this game. Things like the Soul Health are barely used. But, the battles with the actual spirits are even more amazing in this title. Especially with the randomness of your attack failing. It gives a more tense and realistic spin on battles.

Now, I’m hoping so hard that a 4th chapter will be released. Since the concept of this game is just beyond amazing. The writing is always great and the overall mystery is built up so nice. So, if anyone of Experience Inc, would be reading this… We want more!

#3 – Moescape (PC, 2022)

My article

I love writing small stories as a hobby. Since the summer of 2024, I wanted to give those AI roleplay apps a chance. And I’m happy that I did. MoeScape AI is a platform that really clicked with me and with the amazing community around it… I just feel in love.

My brain often gets creative. When this happens, there is a fun bot waiting for me. I can play around with the idea. And if there isn’t a bot that fits the idea, it’s easy to make one. The control that Moescape gives you is beyond amazing. You can easily make a knowledge base. There are various AI models to choose from. With each update, it gets better.

Something I really like is how open the staff is on the Discord. Like, they tell you when things are down. Or when certain decisions need to be taken. Like filtering certain things on the platform due to restrictions from Apple or Google. But, they have a less filtered platform as well. So, they have Moescape and Yodayo. If you go premium, your account is premium on both platforms, and it’s amazing.

#2 – Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (PC – December 2024)

Okay, now. This is going to ruffle some feathers. I am a giant Indiana Jones fan. I placed one of the best Indiana Jones games in 2nd place on my game of the year list?

Now, that’s not because this game is bad or didn’t impress me enough. But, it wasn’t the game that made my year. Sadly enough, it released too late in the year for that.

I know it’s a strange reason. However, I feel like there is one game that pushed the boundaries more within its respective genre.

This game is a blast to play through. I feel that it deserves all the accolades it’s getting. It’s an amazing piece in the Indiana Jones franchise. It’s a love letter to the fans. I’m just thankful that the game turned out this amazing.

When I have beaten the game, I’ll for sure write an article about it. Since on the streams, a lot of random and enjoyable banter is happening. And truly, if you want to see amazing speedruns of this game, check out the_Kovic on his Twitch channel. He has deep knowledge of the game’s inner workings. He shares a lot of interesting insights during the streams.

Now, prepare yourself for an article on this game in the future. Since, I have a lot of things I still want to say and I’m keeping them all for the article.

Honorable mentions

This list wouldn’t be complete if I shout out various other games I have played in the past year. Not every game made the cut. I still wanted to mention those games that made the long list but didn’t survive the selection process.

Cave Digger 2 (PC), Buckshot Roulette (PC), Refind self (Nintendo Switch), Castlevania Dominus Collection (Nintendo Switch), Death Trick: DoubleBlind (Nintendo Switch), Dragon Quest Monsters – The Dark Prince (Nintendo Switch), Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (Nintendo Switch), Ciel Fledge -A Daughter Raising Simulator- (Nintendo Switch), New Super Lucky’s Tale (Nintendo Switch), CrisTales (Nintendo Switch), One More Dungeon 2 (Nintendo Switch), Monster Hunter Rise (Nintendo Switch), This is not my Neighbor (PC) and Tomb Raider I-III Remastered (Nintendo Switch), Everloop (PC)

#1 – Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew (PC – August 2023)

My review

If there was one game that blew me away, that’s Shadow Gambit – The Cursed Crew. The way how it’s built and is the final swansong of the amazing development studio Minimi, it’s just fantastic.

The voice acting is top-notch. The story is excellent. Several game mechanics are seamlessly worked into the game world and the story. But that’s not all, this game has a mindblowing modding tool.

The little attention to detail this game does and the balancing is just mindblowing. The freedom you have to tackle each mission, and it just works. It’s balanced and doesn’t feel unfair. It also doesn’t feel like you made it too difficult by choosing the wrong characters. It also never becomes too easy, where one character makes sure you automatically win the game or the mission. Every character has their use. And you have 8 characters in the base game and 2 get added via the DLC.

I can gush for a long time about this game. If you are interested in a more in-depth article, I highly advise you to read my review linked higher.

This was 2024

I might have written fewer articles in 2024 because a lot of personal things where going on. I have written only 19 articles in 2024. One of the biggest reasons is that I’m just putting more time into finding the right writing style. This has a lot to do with it.

I have been dedicating more time to various other projects. These include contributing to open source projects, translating open source projects, and streaming with Klamath. I am also working on projects for my local acting group. It takes time and effort and I’m enjoying those things quite a lot.

Outside of that, I turned 31 years old in 2024 and life just gets busier with various things. And because of that, I’m also playing less games. At first, I felt guilty that I’m publishing so few articles… But after two years of writing fewer articles, I now dedicate more time to each one. I feel a lot more content with the content I’m placing on my blog here.

I feel that my content only improved over the years. Not only that, I feel more content with my writing. It doesn’t feel like I’m pressuring myself to play a new game every week or two to write about. I can take my time to play the games I want. I also write about the topics I find interesting.

I think I’m finally finding the right rhythm for everything and that’s what I felt that 2024 was for me. Now, this year 2025 is going to be the year I’m writing for 15 years. Before I rebranded in 2013 to this blog, I write a personal life blog that started mid 2010. So, I’m going to celebrate this year with a few special articles. And I have been preparing and brainstorming idea’s for that in 2024.

But thank you everybody for the amazing support in 2024. It was a blast to see how people interacted with my articles and the new friends I made. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. Like I said earlier, I feel prouder of the things I have been putting out. I hope you are enjoying things as well. Thank you for the support this year and I hope to see you in the future. So, for now, have a great rest of your day and take care.

Ten games I want to play in 2025

Od: NekoJonez

Is it that time of the year again? It’s high time to start talking about the new games I’m looking forward to play in the upcoming year. I may have written fewer articles compared to 2023, but I have written better researched articles. But, looking back on 2024 is for the next article. In this article, I’m looking to the year 2025. A year when I have been writing articles for 15 years. And I have been writing these gaming related articles for 12 years. And the third year that I’m livestreaming together with my buddy Klamath. So, on this day, I’m going to reveal the 10 games I’m looking to play in 2025. What games do interest my on the release calendar. Also, feel free to leave a comment in the comment section with your list and/or thoughts on my list. So, let’s dive right into my list. Note, this list is in a random order.

#10 – Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Stole Time (Nintendo Switch – April 2025)

This game was supposed to be released this year. Yet, this game got delayed to 2025. Fantasy Life was a charm RPG on the Nintendo 3DS where you played through a charming and adorable story. You were able to play in different lives like a warrior, magician, wood cutter, miner…

This title from Level5 got a small cult following. We were beyond stocked when the sequel on the Nintendo Switch got announced. Now we can’t wait to play it and the delay is a shame. But on the other hand, the game may be even better because of the additional polish it might get. Or maybe the game will release on the Nintendo Switch 2, which is rumored to be released at that time. Who knows, we shall have to wait and see.

#9 – Professor Layton and the New World of Steam (Nintendo Switch – TBA)

On our live streams, when ever there is a logic puzzle… Klamath says I need to wait before I say my solution. For some reason, I have a knack for solving logic puzzles. I can’t tell you why. What I can tell you is that I love games where puzzles play a central role. Games like Professor Layton.

It has almost been 8 years since we got a new Professor Layton style game. And if you don’t count the spin-off of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy… we need to go back 11 years to a cross over with the Ace Attorney series. Add another year for the final game with only Professor Layton in a lead role.

But a totally new adventure by the professor where solving logic puzzles in a central mechanic in the world is… a wild dream for me. So, please Level5… You have two amazing titles upcoming for 2025, don’t delay them or don’t undercook them. I’m beyond hyped.

#8 – Tomb Raider IV-V-VI Remastered (Multiplatform – Febraury 14th)

Take this admission however you want. But, my first original Tomb Raider game was Tomb Raider Chronicles. Yes, I first played Tomb Raider V.

I have always been of the opinion that Tomb Raider V was a decent game and shouldn’t get the hate it got back then. I can understand that due to the departure on the original formula, like less ancient tombs and small mini-adventures… That it didn’t sit well with Tomb Raider fans. But, as a starting point, it was a blessing, actually.
Now, does Tomb Raider V have problems? Yes, it has. But with the upcoming remake of Tomb Raider 4, 5 and Angel of Darkness… We finally have a chance to see a more improved version of it. So, a week after my birthday, dear Aspyr, you may be sure that I’ll be playing the remaster of Tomb Raider V on my Nintendo Switch to enjoy Tomb Raider V how it should have been. Or maybe on my PC for added nostalgia. That’s some food for thought.

#7 – Demonschool (Mutliplatform – Q1 2025)

As long as your game has an interesting concept, I don’t really care if you are a small studio or a big studio. Necrosoft Games is currently placing the final hand on their new title called Demonschool.

Demonschool is a turnbased tactics RPG game in the style of Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. The idea is very novel and adds a new depth to the genre. Where each unit has their own role, since the weakest enemies can be killed with one hit. So, it becomes more a chess match than anything else.

From the trailers I have seen, I’m beyond interested. I could try and explain it here in this article but I feel like the trailer and battle mechanics trailer they placed on the Steam store page explains it better than I can in this article. Also, give the demo a try since, I really enjoyed it myself.

#6 – Demon Tides (PC – TBA)

While I haven’t played through the original Demon Turf, just yet… I have played through various other similar games like A Hat in Time.

From watching the trailer, I have been highly interested and I got a nostalgia hit for A Hat in Time.

So, I wishlisted this game, and I’m so going to give it a try. Since I saw various video’s on the original game and I wonder by myself, why I haven’t played it. So, Demon Turf and your sequel. I can’t wait to play through you in 2025.

#5 – The Hundred Line Last Defence Academy (Nintendo Switch & PC – April 23th)

Danganronpa and the Zero Escape trilogy are two series very close to my heart. And now we get a new title with those two writers creating a game together and directing it.

Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi are working hand in hand in this game. You clearly see the influence of both their styles in this game. And it will even have a physical release.

To create this game, the studio Too Kyo Games has to take out a loan. That’s because a publishing deal fell through. Aniplex picked this game up as a publisher. And this game is being co-developed by Media.Vision, the company behind the Wild Arms series and various Valkyria Chronicles games. So we are in good hands for this title.

On purpose, I’m trying to avoid spoiling myself as much as I can. Since, I want to be as blind as possible when I play through this game.

#4 – The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st (Nintendo Switch/PC – TBA)

A RPG series I always wanted to get into was the Trails in the Sky series. Sadly, I was always distracted by other games or I had the bad luck of my PSP bricking and destroying my game.

When my PSP bricked, due to the internal battery leaking… I lost my save file as well and I was so annoyed that I didn’t want to restart the game right away.

So, the Trail series continued on and I saw amazing titles appear. Color me surprised that suddenly a remake of the first title gets announced and is coming to the Nintendo Switch and PC. So, I have a chance to play this game from scratch, and it’s totally remade from the ground up. Count me in. I can’t wait to start my journey in this series and see what I missed out on.

#3 – Date Everything (PC – February 14th)

When you see the title of this game, you most likely think to yourself: “Jonez, what in the name of …”. Well, I told you earlier in this article… That if your game has an interesting concept, count me interested.

In this game, you literally can date EVERYTHING in your house. If you have seen those YTShort skits by ProZD where everything is sentient, well… What if it is. And you can date those characters?

That’s what this game brings to the table. And this game is fully voice acted, has 100 (!) characters and branching paths. And get this, there are at least 3 different endings per character. You have the love ending, friends ending and hate ending.

Now, when I saw this concept and gave it a thought, I was like… Oh hey, this has a ton of potential. Since the potential for humor and amazing story telling in this is just huge. And as somebody who loves writing stories and articles myself, this clicked right away. So, I’m going to give this game a chance and see where they go with it.

#2 – Lunar Remastered Collection (Multiplatform – Q1/2 2025)

If I look at all the retro games I still want to play through, like Lufia, my list is getting pretty long. Once, I wrote an article about my backlog, and it has gotten even more out of hand.

So, if you give me a collection of games to play through to shorten my backlog, then consider me interested. Especially when it’s good old fantasy RPG.

A story where you are dumped in a fantasy world and explore it’s various stories. With the upcoming remake, I’m quite curious to dive into the Lunar series and see why various people have recommended it to me.

#1 – Paraside: Duality Unbound (Multiplatform – TBA)

Imagne a tactics RPG, where each battlefield has two sides. Yes, basically a light and a dark side so to speak. And can manipulate the battlefield by flipping the tiles.

Do me a favor and watch the trailer for this game. And then think how many interesting gameplay concepts that this game can have. How is the flipping mechanic going to work. What are the limits of this power.

I’m mostly interested in the story behind this game. Since it’s the style of story I love to write for my personal amusement. But, the gameplay is looking mighty interesting. Now, I have only to decide if I play this title on my PC or if I take it on the go with me on the Switch. We shall see, since the game will have modding support, so the PC version might be my best option.

15 years of game blogging

While this year has been a heavy year for me, I’m happy with everything I achieved. I have been recently published in a fan gaming magazine called ReLOADED by Dominus. And I’m so happy I was able to contribute my work to it.

Next year, I’ll be writing articles for 15 years. I have several special idea’s in mind and have been working on preparations for them. But, I’m not yet going to reveal what they are. Since, I want to leave them a surprise for all of you guys and girl. While 2025 is going to be a busy year for me, I’m sure that it will be filled with amazing adventures and unique opportunities.

When I look at the games that are going to release in 2025, I’m beyond stocked that I will have a lot of games to play and talk about in my blog. But, who knows, games on my backlog or retro games I find might grab my attention more and more.

And with that, I’m going to wrap up this article here. I want to thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it. I hope to be able to welcome you in another one, but until then have a great rest of your day and take care.

Starfield Shattered Space expansion gets release date

Bethesda's first big expansion to Starfield, Shattered Space, will launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S on 30th September.

We got a quick look at the upcoming addition tonight during Gamescom Opening Night Live, in a trailer that mostly focused on the REV-8 land vehicle included in August's free game update.

Ahead of launch, marketing for Starfield felt fairly sober and dramatic - it's fair to say tonight's video takes a more upbeat tone. Previously, Bethesda's Todd Howard said that the lack of land vehicles was a deliberate choice - but it's now something that's being walked (or driven) back.

Keighley's best pal Hideo Kojima has also been tweeting enigmatic silhouetted pictures of actors who are presumably playing roles in Death Stranding 2.

And before you ask, "Yes, there will be new game announcements," Keighley said on X.

Ubisoft shares Star Wars Outlaws' full PC requirements

Ubisoft has updated the PC requirements for its upcoming Star Wars adventure, Star Wars Outlaws, and released a new teaser showing off what kind of performance PC players can expect when the game releases on 30th August.

Taking up a modest 65GB, the settings shouldn't be too punishing for those looking only to meet the minimum standards – although you will need to have DLSS or FSR – but those pushing for the "ultra" experience will need a decent rig.

Amazon MMO New World's Aeternum overhaul is having an open beta next month

New World: Aeternum, the latest expansion/do-over for Amazon's middling MMO New World, is having an open beta on 13th September ahead of its full PC and console release in October.

Aeternum, if you're unfamiliar, emerged back in June, amid some confused messaging that didn't entirely make it clear exactly what it was. And, truthfully, Amazon's marketing remains as baffling as ever. The gist, though, is that this is the same MMORPG released back in 2021, albeit with new features and a bit of finessing ahead of its debut on Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

It's got a pacier story (told through in-game cinematics and pre-rendered cut-scenes), combat improvements, cross-platform play, enhanced controller support, and more - while still retaining its other MMO bits like classes, crafting, and questing. Then there's New World's first-ever large-scale PvP zone, a new 10-player raid, end-game solo trials, and other additions.

Grounded: An Adult Overview of a Shrunken World

Initial buzz about Grounded was minimal; just an inkling that something fresh might emerge in gaming. Yet its sudden explosion into mainstream consciousness proved otherwise; mesmerizing millions with its blend of survival, exploration, and crafting gameplay. Obsidian Entertainment seems to have created some form of magical shrinking potion that allows us to experience life from an ant's point of view! Grounded was an unexpected sensation that captured everyone's interest surprisingly early. A stealthy title that initially managed to stay under the radar before blossoming into something amazing and inspiring players around the globe; suddenly everyone was talking about survival in backyard environments!

A Familiar Formula, Elevated by Whimsy

Crafting Depth, Overcoming Challenges...

I have spent endless hours wandering among towering blades of grass, building intricate fortresses, and fighting massive insects that would send any arachnophobe shrieking with fear. It is an extraordinary world with beauty as well as fear; every dewdrop could provide life support while spiders could pose grave threats; its ability to transform everyday things into extraordinary experiences is truly astounding. Far from me to recommend to those who buy PS5 games a title that I did not finish and totally enjoyed it. Grounded may contain quirks - software bugs not of the garden variety - which are sometimes annoying, yet these issues are easily overlooked given its sheer joy of discovery. Every corner offers new challenges; discovering an underground cavern or crafting a powerful weapon are always exciting experiences in Grounded!

A Deep Well of Crafting, Rewarding Challenges, and a Tantalizing Story

Stealth and Survival Mechanics

Survival mechanics in Antsy are deceptively deep for such an apparently straightforward premise, from gathering resources, crafting tools, and building your base to exploring your surroundings and fortifying against monstrous insects lurking behind every corner. I spent hours fortifying my base only for it to become overrun with angry ants; an experience both thrilling and frightening at once! A game about being shrunk down seemed like an odd choice of subject matter; yet once I ventured into that unfamiliar and overgrown world I became fascinated and became fully immersed in its strange beauty, creating an unparalleled feeling of discovery!

An Engaging Experience for Both Beginners and Veterans Alike

Every blade of grass and dewdrop holds something special to reveal; there's great pleasure in exploring this miniature world and piecing together what happened here. Grounded's humor also stands out: from absurdly large bugs to its quirky dialogue, Grounded, among PS5 adventure games, manages to be both frightening and delightful at the same time. Grounded stands as proof of what can be accomplished with fresh perspectives and taking risks; its success speaks for itself and millions are playing this beloved title!

Exploiting the System, Embracing the Challenge

Final Thoughts: Exceed Expectations

Obsidian Entertainment has conjured an immersive universe that is both intimate and massive in scale. A backyard that was once mundane transforms into an expansive wilderness where every dewdrop may become its own lake; every pebble becomes its own formidable mountain; not simply another take on "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." Obsidian has created something bolder - an immersion into an alienated reality where survival becomes ever-present anxiety. Grounded isn't without its problems; performance issues may hinder gameplay at times and some of the later game content feels thin at times, yet these are minor drawbacks in what otherwise represents an exceptional package.

During this afternoon’s Opening Night Live at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Amazon’s Prime Video label announced Secret Level, a “new adult-animated anthology series” specifically featuring video games. And naturally, among those video games is New World. “Part of our vision from the beginning is to develop and publish fantastic IPs that immerse and excite players […]

One Shots: Remembering in peace

When a beloved player falls, a studio may honor that memory by including him or her as part of the game world. While our headlining picture isn’t the first time we’ve seen such an inclusion, it’s nevertheless heart-touching. “Death comes to us all but this player was very active in game, on the forums and […]

Dune Awakening will burst out of the early access sands in "early 2025"

Lo, a ripple in the release date sands. Stand still a moment while we study this phenomenon. Yes, yes, it is the unmistakable rumble of a large survival MMO pondering its release date. Dune: Awakening is having a think and has decided "early 2025" is a good non-specific time period to come out in early access. That could mean January or February. Or March, I guess. April? Now don't be silly, that's spring. Not April, surely. This beast seems hungry. It will eat before then. I have foreseen it. Mostly by watching the trailer that dropped at Gamescom.

All five of you will get a free buggy when you next boot up Starfield

Fine, that was slightly mean of me. There’s clearly at least fifteen people still playing Starfield, and Bethesda are today rewarding their commitment with a free buggy named the Rev-8. Today! It actually looks pretty nifty. With it, you’ll be able to hop, jump, and skip the tedious ballache that was hoofing it across the RPG’s needlessly large planets. Here’s a looksie:

Wasteland Waste Disposal is a cute clean 'em up set in a toxic world (not ours)

Our unlucky planet in Wasteland Waste Disposal has suffered not just one apocalypse but all of them. Turns out the "megapocalypse" was an unhealthy combination of "every worst-case apocalyptic scenario imaginable". Luckily, in this upcoming sandbox adventure, you have a giant metal fortress that walks above the pools of toxic sludge on huge spidery legs and chomps up all the trash you bring it. If you are not intrigued by that, perhaps the little janitor with a sci-fi vacuum cleaner (or the feel-good music reminiscent of Adventure Time songs) will convince you.

Good job, everyone! The cat talk in the comments has never been stronger. I miss my cats back in England very much. Though I did visit a cat cafe recently, and I got to boop some sphinx kittens on the nose. Life pretty much peaked then, so I'm in a bit of a slump right now. So do me a favour and sound off even more than usual about what your fur babies have been up to lately! And also, if you feel like it, let us know what you're playing this weekend too. Playstation Store lists Red Dead Redemption as “now on PC for the first time ever”

Update: The PlayStation Store's description has now been changed to omit the part quoted below. Being a forward-thinking individual, however, I took a screenshot.

Well, root my toots. Unless you’re Australian, in which case don't do that. Just enjoy the now very much confirmed-looking release of the original Red Dead Redemption on PC. That’s according to a listing on the PlayStation Store, which contains the currently inaccurate but tantalising phrase “now on PC for the first time ever.”

The search for the cheapest and yet best quality supermarket drink-as-you-go coffee continues. I know it's the first time I've made you aware of this project, but it's been going on since I moved to Glasgow. So far, Lidl's own brand remains the clear winner, a solid 8 on the taste meter at just 59p. But while writing this, I'm sipping an "Intenso" Arctic Coffee from Morrisons, which is giving the Lidl frontrunners some stiff competition at last, albeit at 145% the cost. Will one true victor emerge? Find out next week! For now, here's what we're all clicking on this weekend!

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Nathan Drake’s Last Masterpiece Adventure

Title: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Type of Game: Action-Adventure
Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Released: May 10, 2016
Platforms Available: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC Game
Platform Reviewed: PlayStation 5
Level of Maturity: Teen (T) – ESRB
Reading Time: 13 minutes

Naughty Dog is behind some of the best PlayStation games in history. The Crash Bandicoot series won the hearts of millions of gamers on the first PlayStation. On PlayStation 2, the developers pulled it off with the excellent JAK and Daxter series, which brought an open world and other innovative features to the platforming genre that the competition continues to benefit from to this day. With the arrival of the PlayStation 3, developers decided to move on to a whole new genre that allows them to tell well-written stories with fleshed-out characters. We’re talking, of course, about the Uncharted series and the head of the phenomenal The Last of Us. Later on, the developers then sought to end the story of their biggest star, Nathan Drake. I’ll tell you how the fourth Uncharted fared in the review now, though you probably already know that. Naughty Dog is a safe bet.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Motorcycle chase with an armored vehicle in Madagascar

The Final Adventure Begins

Even when Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was announced, the developers made it clear that it would be Nathan Drake’s last adventure, concluding his story. Of course, I won’t tell you here if everything will turn out well or badly, you’ll have to find that out for yourself. Anyway, the new adventure revolves around the famous pirate Henry Avery, who was supposed to hide somewhere a treasure of incalculable value that Nathan Drake was after fifteen years ago, even with his brother, who is making his first-ever appearance in the series.

Although he wasn’t mentioned in the previous games because Nathan had him presumed dead, he fits in perfectly with the game and the Uncharted series and helps tell not only the actual pirate story but also clarifies the history of Nathan Drake around which the story is built. We’re used to well-written stories with Naughty Dog, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is no exception to this. The plot is intriguing, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns, as well, as nicely-written dialogue, and most importantly, superbly acted characters with professional voice acting, both the main characters, which is to be expected, and the negative characters. For the first time ever, the acting of each character goes so far that you can tell what they are feeling, whether sadness, anger, or joy, from their facial expressions and just by looking into their eyes, which only helps to tell a story full of all sorts of emotions.

Crafting the Ultimate Journey

In Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, it’s easy to see how far the developers at Naughty Dog have come over the years. From the platforming games and the first Uncharted to The Last of Us, with which Nathan’s fourth adventure shares a number of common elements, from the style of storytelling to the action itself, which is far more varied and not as tightly tuned as in the past, which I’ll mention later. Of course, everything you loved about the previous games returns, just in a far more polished and bigger way.

Of course, only a fool would expect a new Uncharted open-world game, which of course it isn’t, it’s still a linear shooter that focuses mainly on storytelling, just with far more open locations that have excellent and detailed design that the developers must have spent years of hard work on. You’ll get to see lots of places around the world as you play. You’ll explore rainy and freezing Scotland, the urban environment of Italy, but also Madagascar, and various tropical islands. The fact that the levels have increased several times shows that a new element in the gameplay fits in perfectly. For example controllable vehicles in Madagascar plains. You’ll be driving around the many levels in a jeep, and at sea in a boat. The vehicle controls are fully intuitive and you’ll get used to them in a matter of seconds.

Pacing Perfection

What’s great about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is how the developers kept the pace high from the start. They constantly mix in slower storytelling chapters with action-packed ones. This balance is something they’ve been striving for since the first installment. Naughty Dog’s evolution is evident in the action passages as well.

These passages are more entertaining and elaborate than in the past. They offer plenty of options for resolving conflicts, thanks to the openness of the levels. You can still charge through enemies like Rambo and make Nathan a mass murderer. The shooting and cover system behind obstacles is now excellent. Nathan has several new ranged and melee attacks. Many encounters can also be avoided altogether. You can bypass opponents in the manner of Solid Snake. The developers created a simple but fully functioning stealth system, inspired by the Metal Gear Solid series. The feel of the action passages is excellent. The variety is enhanced by the roughly three dozen weapons, which are a joy to shoot.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Firefight with the Shoreline Convoy in Madagascar

Intelligent Adversaries and Allies

It’s incredible how Naughty Dog developers are raising the bar in almost everything. They are showing their competitors what direction to take. This also applies to the artificial intelligence of the enemies and characters that accompany you during each chapter. Enemies are observant, scrutinizing every slight movement on the map. They constantly change position during encounters, taking cover and supporting each other to eliminate the protagonist as soon as possible and thwart his quest for the legendary treasure.

You won’t come across any standing dummies who just stand still and shoot. This adds to the dynamic and excellent firefights, which are different every time and consistently enjoyable. The developers were aware of this and created something unique. You can replay all the encounters afterward without having to repeat entire chapters. Excellent AI is also provided by the teammates, who support Nathan in the fight. They can often shoot a large number of villains and help in fistfights. They constantly communicate with him, advising him when going through various locations and helping with solving puzzles. This makes the gameplay as smooth as possible and maintains a certain pace.

Exploring and Puzzling Through the World

Action makes up roughly half of the gameplay in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, making it the most important component. But I mustn’t forget to mention the excellent exploration of each level. This is done in the manner of The Last of Us, whether you do it on foot or from a jeep. The solutions to the superbly designed logical or spatial puzzles are also worth noting. The indispensable diary will help you with these. In it, Nathan writes down everything he sees during the game to assist him in difficult moments. You can also collect old pages from books or letters, which help during the puzzles. Most importantly, these items deepen the story and the legend of the pirate treasure.

Additionally, you can sometimes use the novelty of a jeep to solve puzzles in the open world. This adds many unexpected scenes and events. The jumping passages are also satisfying. Nathan’s movement on platforms is much smoother and more intuitive. He has a special grappling hook to cross big gaps. Later, there is a climbing wedge, which could have been used a little more. You get it relatively later and then only use it in a few situations, which is a bit of a shame.

A Lengthy and Replayable Treasure Hunt

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is clearly the longest installment in the series, with 22 major chapters. While I didn’t really stop anywhere and a lot of places were left unexplored, I still got a solid fifteen hours on the greater difficulty along with exploring, which is way above standard for a single-player game these days. But I believe that many will take a little longer to play because you’ll want to explore everything. The big advantage is the replayability. You can search for hidden treasures, relics, links to other games, or other bonuses that the developers cleverly hid around the locations that you don’t have the chance to discover on your first playthrough.

Additionally, replayability is helped by the fact that you can handle many situations like Rambo, but also avoid encounters altogether, and there are several hidden trophies for quietly passing through the levels. The developers have also prepared a lot of unlockable bonuses, whether it’s infinite bullets, all the weapons, and so on, to various graphics filters, or bonus character outfits that you’ll definitely want to unlock. So one playthrough of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is definitely not the end of it, you’ll want to give it at least one more go. In the case of the platinum trophy, even a total of three times.

Expansive Multiplayer Fun

Moreover, Uncharted is no longer just a story campaign, but since the second installment, the developers have also regularly served up a multiplayer component, which they are constantly improving. While in Uncharted 2 it was still a minor bonus, in Uncharted 3 it was a full-fledged part, and it’s no different in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, where the multiplayer is the most ambitious and, dare I say it, can keep you entertained for dozens more hours.

The multiplayer builds on fast and fluid 5 vs 5 team action with the ability to use a variety of weapons, bonus abilities, and even a grappling hook for movement or melee, it also allows teams to create interesting tactics on nicely designed maps, of which there are eight in the base and inspired by the story campaign. For multiplayer, I have to mention the fact that the developers focused mainly on stable 60fps. For the PlayStation 4 version. The PlayStation 5 version I reviewed, called Legacy of Thieves Remaster Collection, with this remastered campaign, runs at 60 fps as well. For PS4 “only” Multiplayer, which is a well-done job considering the weaker performance of this console.

Multiplayer Modes and Mechanics

So far, Uncharted 4 has three game modes for you to play. There’s the classic team deathmatch, which is all about the number of enemies you kill. The second mode is Command, in which you and your team have to take control points on the map and then hold them to get the most points, it’s classic Control, but it’s also fun in an Uncharted way and won’t get boring.

The most team-based mode is the Looting mode, designed to be played with eight players (4 vs 4). In it, a special relic always appears on the map which you then have to deliver to your chest. Of course, both teams fight for this, and the relic can be tossed between team members in various ways to support each other. I found this mode to be probably the most fun, the most exciting, and the most made for teamwork and headset communication of all.

Unparalleled Visual Detail

If there’s one studio that has always gotten the most out of any given piece of hardware and shown everyone that it can be done when you want it, it’s definitely Naughty Dog. Back in the PlayStation 2 era, everyone admired the gorgeous-looking JAK and Daxter platformers, on PlayStation 3 it was the Uncharted series, and it was the fourth installment that was the best-looking game of that generation until The Last of Us Part II arrived, no question.

Throughout the game you’ll marvel at the awesome-looking locations for the time, with realistic textures and lighting, all the characters are incredibly detailed, with skin deformation and various wounds and torn clothing visible as you play. In addition, everything is complemented by awesome effects, whether it is explosions or perfect physics, thanks to which practically everything effectively falls apart, and during shootouts, stones and large amounts of splinters fly to each side. It’s almost unbelievable what the developers have managed to get out of hardware that can match computers at several times the price of his time.

Immersive Audio Experience

The whole perfection is then underscored by the soundtrack, which for the first time ever is by the acclaimed British composer Henry Jackman. It contains a lot of great and easy-to-remember tracks (including new versions of old songs and brand new ones) that you’ll want to keep playing on their own, and the soundtrack always complements the action on the screen, whether it’s the cutscenes or the action sequences themselves, making you feel like you’re watching a movie in the cinema. The sound system is also great, whether it’s the gunfire, explosions, various music effects, or the environment itself, everything has been worked out to the maximum by the developers to give the best possible farewell to their favorite hero and prepare him for a dignified exit from the video game scene.

A Triumphant Farewell

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is one of the best action games I’ve been able to play to this date, containing a perfect balance between cinematic sequences, action, and solving ingenious puzzles, while in virtually everything setting the bar for the competition a little higher again and in some aspects up to this date. Whether it’s the narrative, the acting, the design, the excellent action, the AI, or the breathtaking audiovisual design, where you can see in every pixel how much care and love the developers have put into the game. Naughty Dog has created yet another video game gem, and it just confirms where the best games you can play are currently being made. It’s just a shame that we’ll have to wait a long time for another game of similar quality.

Trailer na hru S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl ukazuje nádherný a zároveň smrtící otevřený svět

s.t.a.l.k.e.r. 2 heart of chornobyl image 4 scaled 1

Hra S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl vychází 20. listopadu pro Xbox Series X/S a PC.

STALKER 2 vyjde 20. listopadu.

Hru si můžete předobjednat například ZDE.

Open-World Games With The Best Quest Variety

Playing open-world games solely for the main plot can feel entirely different from trying to complete every single side quest. In many cases, completing an open-world game to the fullest can take players over 100 hours, while sticking to just the story provides a much shorter and more focused experience. It depends on how well the game engages players, making them want to explore everything it has to offer and pursue every small unfinished task, or leading them to try just the first few quests to know what to expect and lose interest in pursuing side activities.

Sea of Thieves: More than Meets the Eye

I believe I am not the only one who has had childhood afternoons spent poring over pirate maps, so you can recognize the feeling that such moments ignited in you, the wanderlust that you yearn to pursue in life. Sea of Thieves may provide just such an adventure (or nostalgic memory reignited), and it could be the case that once started, you will be hooked (pun intended) for a long! Think about the longevity of this adventure game: 12 Seasons already! When I say "hooked for long," it is not just an expression... I really mean it!

A collage of action-packed scenes including ship battles, treasure hunts, and encounters with mythical creatures.

Is Sea of Thieves Worth It?

One must consider whether its riches truly meet their mark because the Sea of Thieves is a pleasant and addictive game, however, you cannot avoid asking yourself: is it worth its very high price tag? Also, are there ways to mitigate the price, like getting it for less - think cheap Xbox games on key websites like G2A or Eneba - or something else? Very fast, to leave these questions behind, I can tell you that on Xbox, you can get an Xbox pass for less than $10/month and enjoy many games, including Sea of Thieves. And "yes," it could be found at a better price on the websites mentioned.

Capturing the immersive storytelling and rich lore that players can delve into while playing Sea of Thieves.

From Ship to Shore: Unraveling the Mysteries of Sea of Thieves Islands

Although its graphics might not appeal to everyone - with more cartoony than hyper-realistic depictions - that doesn't matter; what matters is how well they work together: vivid colors, meticulous attention to environment details ranging from tropical island palm trees swaying in the breeze to volcanic vents in Devil's Roar giving off fiery flares combined to form an undeniably stunning world that exudes with its distinct artistic style and captivating moments of breathtaking beauty or hilarious pirate misadventures captured as screenshots before! Never have I taken so many screenshots before in one game that captured such breathtaking moments of breathtaking beauty or hilarious pirate misadventures!

An Insanely Beautiful Piratical Playground

And yet this is only a taste of what lies beyond. Concealed alcoves, perilous shallows, and mysterious isles shrouded in mist make the Sea of Thieves realm, an ever-evolving tableau that never ceases to surprise with its breadth and diversity. Furthermore, weather patterns add another dimension: one moment being caressed by gentle caresses of zephyr wind while moments later caught up in a fierce battle against tempests wreaking havoc: all elements come together to make for an ever-evolving tableau which demands reverence as well as attention as continual adaptation by those living within its waters.

Are You Dreaming of Hoisting the Jolly Roger and Chasing Sunset across Endless Blue?

In conclusion, here's the salty truth: Sea of Thieves can be an amazing solo experience too, even if I would rather recommend it as a multiplayer PvP or PvE video game, offering plenty of solitude with which you can commune with the vastness of the ocean. Even if you buy Xbox adventure games for playing alone, solo sailing offers its poetry and it is a nice departure from many more commercial offers or twitch-shooters that conquered the market lately. This is a different kind of adventure, that develops slowly, but well, and communing directly with nature while learning to read waves, predict storms, and anticipate squalls is part and parcel with becoming a hardened pirate from sea's harsh conditions.
