Cancellation Watch: Avatar The Last Airbender Tops the Netflix Chart, TWD The Ones Who Live Has a Good Start, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Avatar The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This live-action adaptation of the animated classic was a big swing for Netflix and it opened at Number 1 in that streamer’s chart with 153 million hours watched across 21 million households. That was the second-best week posted by any Netflix entry this season and has the show off to a good start. Reviews have been mixed on this one so far (it holds a 60% Tomatometer Score on Rotten Tomatoes so far), but I expect that it will continue into a second season if the strong viewership holds up.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (AMC, Status: Mini-Series): The latest Walking Dead spin-off had its premiere on Sunday and posted a 0.21 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 896K total viewers. That is lower than the final season of TWD but higher than the other spin-offs Dead City and Daryl Dixon (both of which have been renewed). The Ones Who Live has been billed as a mini-series and Andrew Lincoln previously indicated that he did not want to return full-time to the franchise, but there is a chance they could eke out another season or two from this one as a cross-over between all three spin-offs is being considered.

Quantum Leap (NBC, Status: Renewal Possible): This series wrapped up its second season last week, averaging a 0.19 rating in the demo and 1.4 total viewers for its two-episode finale. It performed below network averages after moving to the Tuesday 10 PM EST timeslot in January, but it was not far off from NBC’s average for dramas during its Fall run. Two other Fall dramas from the network have received renewals (The Irrational and Found) while Quantum Leap is still waiting for word on its fate. The fans should definitely make some noise on the social networks to support this one to help its chances of getting to a third season.

Not Dead Yet (ABC, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural drama returned for its second season two weeks ago and has averaged a 0.26 rating in the demo so far. That is below the network’s overall average and its average for comedies. It is also losing a fair amount of the audience from its lead-in from The Conners. I am not going to move this one to Bubble status just yet, but I will keep a close eye on how it tracks in the coming weeks, and fans should certainly give this one some support on the social networks.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 has received an April 4th premiere date, counting it as part of the 2023-24 season, and it will now get factored into the Ending shows this year. Also, I had not added Star Wars: The Bad Batch to that column yet, so I have fixed that now. That brings the score for the current season to nine cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (19% of shows tracked) vs. 18 renewed (38%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 48
Cancelled 5 10.4%
Ending 4 8.3% 18.8%
Renewed 18 37.5%
On the Bubble 4 8.3%
Renewal Possible 17 35.4%
Mini-Series 5

Cancellation Watch: Invasion and American Horror Stories Get Renewed, Echo Hits the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Invasion (Apple TV+, Status: Renewed): This alien invasion series has received the greenlight for a third season and that will start production later this month. The show has not placed in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings across its first two seasons and has generally not scored well with critics or viewers, currently holding a 56% Tomatometer Score and 50% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. But Apple TV+ has generally been good about supporting its originals so far. There has been no indication at this point that the third season will be the show’s last, but don’t be surprised if that announcement is made at some point.

American Horror Stories (FX, Status: Renewed): This announcement has not received much exposure with the entertainment media, but FX president John Landgraf has confirmed at the TCAs that the spin-off to AHS will be returning for a fourth season. That show made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for one week during its third season release last October, and it has been fairly well received so far. The fourth season is targeting an October premiere in 2024, and there is no word yet on whether it will have more episodes than the four that made up its third year. The show has not proven to be a huge hit so far, but it will eventually get lumped into the syndication package for AHS and will likely stick around as long as the parent series is still going.

Echo (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This Hawkeye spin-off (and Daredevil-connected) series entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at Number 4 for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 731 minutes of viewing. All five episodes of the show were available for streaming that day (as opposed to Disney+’s usual weekly rollout) which certainly helped boost its viewership. This one has been billed as a limited series, but there is always the chance that it could return for a second season if the viewership remains strong.

Quantum Leap (NBC, Status: Renewal Possible): This series held at a 0.18 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic for a second week. That is definitely lower than the 0.29 score the show averaged in Fall, but the network had to expect a drop in viewership when they moved it to Tuesdays at 10 PM EST. I am not moving it to Bubble status just yet, but I will keep a close eye on it as it wraps up its second season and fans should definitely make some noise to bring the show more attention.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (Adult Swim/Max, Status: On the Bubble): This animated series from Genndy Tartakovsky arrived last Spring with little fanfare on Adult Swim and I did not even realize the show was airing at the time. It is also streaming on Max, but it has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. There has been no word on a second year yet, but Tartakovsky has indicated that he has plans for future seasons of the show. Fans should certainly take to the social networks with a Call to Action to help get this one a renewal.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

In addition to the renewals for Invasion and American Horror Stories, Disney+ also announced a second season for Percy Jackson and the Olympians last week. That brings the current Cancellation/Renewal Score to seventeen renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (43% of shows tracked) vs. only six cancelled and ending so far (15%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 40
Cancelled 4 10.0%
Ending 2 5.0% 15.0%
Renewed 17 42.5%
On the Bubble 6 15.0%
Renewal Possible 11 27.5%
Mini-Series 4

Cancellation Watch: Quantum Leap Returns Down, Masters of the Universe Falls Out of Netflix Chart, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Quantum Leap (NBC, Status: Renewal Possible): This show returned from hiatus last week and only posted a 0.18 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.7 million total viewers, down from its Fall average of a 0.29 rating. The Tuesday 10 PM EST slot is a more challenging hour and this one is not getting much of a lead-in from the third season of La Brea. If NBC moved the show to this hour to kill it off, that would be disappointing. I will be watching how it tracks over the coming weeks to decide if I should move it to Bubble status, and fans should probably make a Call to Action on the social networks to give it some support.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): Apparently, only five episodes of this show have been planned so far, and any additional seasons will depend on the viewership. It made it into the Netflix Top 10 for its premiere week but dropped out the week after. This series has been better received than Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and Kevin Smith does have more plans for the property, but that will be up to Netflix execs at this point.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Disney+, Status: Renewal Possible): This show slipped in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its third week, dropping to Number 6 with an estimated 627 million minutes watched. But it continues to perform well for a Disney+ original and should be on track for a second-season renewal.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

AMC just announced that its season-long anthology series The Terror will be returning for a third year, but that show counts all the way back to the 2018-19 season and will not return until 2025. The score for the current season remains unchanged at fourteen renewed sci fi and fantasy entries for the 2023-24 season (36% of shows tracked) vs. six that are cancelled or ending (15%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 39
Cancelled 4 10.3%
Ending 2 5.1% 15.4%
Renewed 14 35.9%
On the Bubble 6 15.4%
Renewal Possible 13 33.3%
Mini-Series 3
