The iPhone 15 series all offer the same 12MP selfie camera, but it seems like Apple could change things up with the iPhone 17 line in 2025.

MacRumors obtained a research note from Apple analyst Jeff Pu, and the analyst asserts that all four iPhone 17 models will pack a 24MP selfie camera. This camera is said to offer six plastic lens elements.

There’s no word on other details (e.g. sensor size, pixel size), but this could be a handy upgrade. Many phones offer selfie cameras with a wide field of view (ideal for group selfies), but also let you crop in for more conventional selfies. So a higher resolution selfie camera could make for more detailed cropped selfies.

A higher resolution selfie camera could also potentially make for improved low-light snaps via pixel binning. Although a pixel-binned 24MP shot is equivalent to an 8MP snap.

This wouldn’t be the highest resolution selfie camera in the smartphone space, as we’ve previously seen phones with 32MP, 40MP, and even 50MP selfie cameras. Samsung, in particular, offered a 40MP selfie camera on its Ultra phones. But the Galaxy S24 Ultra has since reverted to a 12MP lens. So we’re curious to see what’s the megapixel sweet spot for selfie cameras.

The iPhone 16 series launch is still a few months away, but whispers of a groundbreaking 2025 iPhone could already be stealing the spotlight from Apple’s 2024 launches. A recent report from The Information, citing sources directly involved in the project, reveals that Apple is actively developing a radically thinner iPhone model.

While we had previously reported about a slim variant joining the iPhone 17 lineup, the latest report suggests a more ambitious vision. This ultra-thin iPhone, code-named D23, is poised to be an entirely new product, much like the iPhone X.

In 2022, TSMC announced that its 2nm fabrication process, dubbed N2, will be ready for mass production by 2025. Soon after that, it was reported that the chipset in Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro series phones would be the first to use TSMC’s 2nm fabrication process. However, after that, we didn’t get any update on the matter. Well, that’s changing today.

According to a new report from Digitimes, TSMC is on track to ready the 2nm fabrication process for mass production by 2025. The publication also claims that the company plans to start small-scale production of chips on the N2 technology by the end of this year. It means that Apple could get chipsets for the iPhone 17 Pro series devices made on TSMC’s 2nm process, making them the first devices to use the company’s N2 technology.

Samsung Foundry is also expected to ready its 2nm fabrication process, dubbed the SF2, by 2025. Reportedly, Qualcomm will use this fabrication process for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. That year's flagship Exynos chipset might also use that fabrication process. However, since the iPhone 17 Pro will come out before the Galaxy S26 series, Apple will beat Samsung in the 2nm race, at least when it comes to launching phones with 2nm chips.
