Welcome to “Green Hell”: Adding the Legendary Nordschleife to Forza Motorsport

Welcome to “Green Hell”: Adding the Legendary Nordschleife to Forza Motorsport

  • Florian Düker, Xbox Wire DACH
Forza Nordschleife Hero

Unforgiving, stunning, hellishly challenging: the Nordschleife, the oldest part of the legendary Nürburgring in the Eifel region, is also known as the “Green Hell”. The term derives from Formula 1 world champion Jackie Stewart, who looked down on the track surrounded by forests from a helicopter in 1968 and said: “It’s going to be a green hell this weekend”. We spoke to Alexander Gerhard, Head of Communications Nürburgring, and creator rAii, racing game expert and part of “Die Pixelhelden” on YouTube, to explore the legend of the Nordschleife.

After many years of development, Forza Motorsport was released in October 2023 including the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit and numerous other world-famous racetracks. In February, Update 5 brought the iconic Nordschleife to the game. The 20.8-kilometer track is now available free of charge for all players.

But what exactly is it that makes the Nordschleife so fascinating? Who else could answer this question rather than Alexander Gerhard, where squealing tires and roaring engines are part of everyday life at his workplace at the Nürburgring, and rAii, who has turned his passion for racing into a profession as a creator.

“The Nürburgring was built in 1927 with extraordinary length through the middle of the Eifel forests. It remains the longest permanent race track to this day. Even back then, the racing drivers who came to the Nürburgring knew what an incredibly special and challenging track the Nürburgring actually is,” explains Alexander, quoting Rudolf Caracciola, who won the first car race on the Nürburgring and described his experience as follows:

“When we came to the newly opened Nürburgring in 1927, we opened our eyes. We had never experienced anything like it. There was a road in the middle of the Eifel mountains, a closed loop with almost 180 bends spread over 22 kilometers. It was a track with gradients that were a sharp blow to the engine, but also with unspeakably beautiful views far across the country, of valleys and villages.”

On the one hand, it is the almost 100-year history that still inspires awe and respect among motorsport enthusiasts and professional racing drivers alike: 1000-kilometer races, fatal accidents, unforgettable Formula 1 races, new records and impressive performances by the best drivers in the world. Record-breaking world champion Michael Schuhmacher made such a lasting impression that an entire corner was named after him. When Niki Lauda’s Ferrari went up in flames on the Nordschleife in 1976, the entire motorsport world held its breath.

In addition to the history, it is the track itself that accounts for the legend of the Nordschleife: the unique layout, the dynamics, the differences in altitude and the unique atmosphere. If you want to complete a lap, you have to tackle over 70 corners and 300 meters of elevation gain. An experience that demands everything from the driver and is now possible in Forza Motorsport.

In Forza Motorsport, players will discover what makes this circuit an adrenaline-filled crucible, one which pushes professionals, manufacturers, cars – and now, finally, Forza fans – to their limits. YouTuber and racing expert rAii has already put the track through its paces in countless racing games, including the new Forza Motorsport, and shared his thoughts on the presentation with Xbox Wire DACH: “It just feels like the Nordschleife that you know. That’s the most important thing.”

In comparison with its predecessors, he rates it as the best Nordschleife ever implemented in a Forza Motorsport game: “When you drive on the track, even if some things have been toned down a bit, you just feel like you’re driving on the Nordschleife. The power of the consoles allows for better visuals – not just graphically, but also physically.”

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is: do the turn-in points feel right, does the atmosphere feel right, are the height differences and crests noticeable? All of this has already been implemented very well,” explains rAii.

According to rAii, the new penalty system means that elements such as tire stacks placed in the way, which were intended to prevent unauthorized shortcuts in earlier parts of the series but at the same time reduced the realism and atmosphere, are no longer necessary. Even though the branding and a few additional spotlights have of course already resulted in a few differences, the Forza Motorsport version is still the most modern and up-to-date representation of the Nordschleife at the present time.

However, the quality of a racing game depends not only on the atmosphere and realism, but also on the fun of driving: “The whole track is awesome. It’s like a rollercoaster ride. On the Nordschleife, every lap is always fun. The Nordschleife is one of the few tracks that I could drive non-stop. Because it’s multi-faceted and because it’s long – long can also be boring, but it’s not.”

Does rAii have a favorite section? “Actually yes, the approach to the high eight and the high eight itself. I kind of like the way you position the vehicle after the carousel and then drive the whole section downhill again. I love going to the absolute limit there and getting everything out of it. Even though you can’t overtake there!”

Anyone who has installed Forza Motorsport and Update 5 can get started and enter the “Green Hell”. The only question that remains is which car to get into. rAii has a recommendation for this: “GT3 racing cars are always cool to drive. That’s probably the standard answer. But the big advantage of Forza Motorsport, even compared to other racing games, is that you can also drive road cars on it. You shouldn’t underestimate how much fun it is to use vehicles on the track that weren’t primarily built for the racetrack.

“That’s when you realize how much a track like this can challenge a vehicle. Of course, the sporty models are the most fun. Or even better, so-called racing cars with road approval, such as a Porsche 911 GT3 RS or an AMG GT Black Series. That would be my first choice, the best of both worlds!”

For Alexander Gerhard, the fascination and appeal of the track in the game is exactly the same as in real life: “You want to conquer these 73 corners and 300 meters of elevation that each lap offers. Everyone is proud when they improve by a second after completing the course, because they know that it takes an enormous effort and perfection to drive just under 21 kilometers without making a mistake and gaining a second. But there’s no such thing as the perfect lap on the Nordschleife – and that’s what makes it so fascinating.”

If you feel like venturing into the “Green Hell”, you can do so in Forza Motorsport. The game, which won Best Sports/Racing Game at the Game Awards, is available to play in Game Pass since October 10, 2023. Experience the iconic Nordschleife and the combined GP Full Circuit in Career Mode and Rivals Time Attack or create your own track days in Free Play and Private Multiplayer. Unicorn Overlord: Vanillaware’s Compellingly Unique Xbox Debut

Unicorn Overlord: Vanillaware’s Compellingly Unique Xbox Debut

Unicorn Overlord Key Art

For all of Vanillaware Ltd’s storied, 22-year history, the Japanese developer of Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has never shipped a game for Xbox consoles. That is, until today. Unicorn Overlord, a new fantasy RPG title published by ATLUS, is out now for Xbox Series X|S, and it may well be the studio’s best game yet.

Unicorn Overlord is not your typical strategy RPG. Players will find gameplay elements reminiscent of beloved classics; the real-time movement of character groups from Ogre Battle 64, the close-up battle vignettes of Fire Emblem, the relationship building conversations of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and the fine-tuning combat gambits of Final Fantasy XII, all combined in a way that feels entirely new, wrapped in Vanillaware’s stunning, trademark 2D art style.

Unicorn Overlord Screenshot

You play as Alain, a young leader of a resistance movement that aims to overthrow the tyrannical Zenoiran empire that has enslaved the world. Along the way, you will recruit so many allies from different races and classes, each with different strengths, aversions, and their own reasons for fighting. You’re literally reclaiming the whole world, hearts and minds included, one patch of ground at a time – coloring in a map using your weapons instead of paints.

The real fun is in how these systems mesh together; as your army swells, so do your options to wage war with the empire. Things start simple and approachably, with players commanding a few teams of two around small maps. As you build your renown through victory, you’ll be able to field as many as 10 teams of 5 characters at once, all playing different roles on the battlefield. Hulking Hoplites hold down chokepoints with massive shields in hand. Flying units, such as Gryphon Knights, soar over obstacles to press an advantage, while ranged Hunters and Witches can take over towers to help those on the ground gain an advantage with combat assists.

You will have to use your wits and skills to manage your troops, plan your battles, and make decisions that will shape the fate of the world. Yet – and this is the magic of Unicorn Overlord – the complexity scales so smoothly, it keeps everything manageable.

After each battle, there’s a fun “tidying up” that takes place – with roving enemies removed, you navigate Alain across the map, harvesting resources, visiting and improving towns, and speaking with townsfolks and soldiers. There are also key decisions to make, as you’re often given the option to recruit an enemy you’ve just defeated, or put them to the sword for their crimes. Some of these decisions are agonizing to make, with no clear right answer. For example, I decided to spare a rather unlikeable mage as I knew I’d need his (literal) firepower for an upcoming siege. Another level boss I turned over to the town guard for judgement, only for him to quickly escape the brig. Still waiting to see how that comes back to bite me.

Unicorn Overlord Screenshot

For all there is to say about the game, nothing beats playing it yourself. Fortunately, you can try the game for free by downloading a meaty, free demo from the Xbox Store. The demo allows you to experience several hours of the campaign, where you’ll develop a feel for the core gameplay mechanics and features. Best of all: you can also transfer your save data from the demo to the full game, should you choose to continue your quest… and you will want to.

Getting Started

Here’s a few tips I’ve picked up which may help you through the demo, and beyond:

  • Travel in groups – it might be tempting to fan your troops out all over the map during encounters, but there’s a lot of value in having a group of 2 (or more) units travel together. Once combat is initiated, you can use the controller’s bumpers to cycle through those nearby units to see which is likely to have the best results in a battle.
  • Don’t just deploy everyone at the starting base – sometimes it’s best to have a swift unit like a gryphon rider or knight take over a forward operating base so you can deploy slower units closer to the level boss or another key objective.
  • Spend every point – the game reminds you multiple times, but it can be easy to forget your special moves. You’ll start each battle with a few scant ‘ Valor Points’, which can be spent on deploying your units. But, building them up by capturing objectives or defeating enemy units, you can begin to spend them on special moves (one for every fighter in your army) or on deploying more troops.   Spending points wisely can change the tide of battle, and later in a level, an Archer’s ranged attacks or a Knight’s charge can be used to soften up bosses before going in for the killing blow. At minimum, use Alain’s double XP bonus on teams before they’re about to finish off a group, especially if one of the members of said team is a bit under leveled.
  • Don’t stick to the story – In the early part of the game, you’re given one, very clear objective – and I’d recommend avoiding it for a few hours. Exploring the world map reveals huge optional sections that contain side quest battles that can help you level, gain new allies with abilities you won’t have, and unlock new locations with new items to buy. It’s astonishing how far you can travel without completing the main storyline – and how many other storylines you’ll find by doing so.
  • Search high and low – there is much to be found in the exploratory phases after a battle; glowing sparks indicating an item or resource are easy to find, but some are hiding out in forests or in areas seemingly out of reach. You may need to take Alain the long way around a coastline that initially seems impenetrable to get to some caches, but there is always a way!

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of the most anticipated and innovative games of the year, from one of the industry’s most celebrated developers. Unicorn Overlord is out now for Xbox Series X|S.

Wizard With a Gun: 5 Powerful Picks from the New Bounty of Guns Update

Hello Xbox fans! Our co-op sandbox survival game Wizard With a Gun unloads an expanded arsenal of new content today in Bounty of Guns, our newest free update! There’s a crate-load of fresh, awesome stuff in Bounty of Guns, including new enemies, events and fashionable furniture for your refuge in the Tower, but, as the name suggests, there’s one new feature in particular that wizards who love weapons will really get a kick out of.

Lucrative new Bounties offer you the chance to gain special rewards from an assortment of more than 50 firearms, and we’ve picked out five of our favourites to help kickstart your collection.

Fidrow Cultbuster

Favoured for its steady output, larger magazine size, and stronger bullets, the Fidrow Cultbuster is a great way to keep your enemies hiding behind cover. The Cultbuster has been banned on the plains after the Cult of Iron Massacre six years ago, but the contraband wand has found its way on the Shatter in the hands of those same cultists.

Odden’s Pointer

Odden Hammerite is a mechanist craftswoman from the eastern plains whose guns are recognizable from their brutalist designs. She’s a supplier of the Gladwell family, who value the added power the guns generate by charging up shots. Together, her line of guns is known as Odden’s Fist.

Vitriol

The Cult of Lead has developed numerous weapons to better spread poison and corruption. Vitriol is one of their most successful experimental weapons yet. Each shot adds an additional poison dose to its bullet, making it the ideal companion to lethal finisher spells!

Malediction

Draco Scarpath is renowned for his extraordinarily powerful gunmancy. The downside to his obsidian-infused wands is that every shot drains the life from their wielder’s body. The more powerful the gun, the higher a toll it takes. Most wizards stay far away from his cursed weapons… except those who prize power above all else.

Blightspreader

Since discovering the Infinite Well in the Tower, Orion has spent years trying to cleanse its poison. His idea for the Blightspreader came originally as a way to deliver antidotes faster than the Well’s rate of decay, but now his gun too has been corrupted. Orion has infused the minigun with the Well’s poison and wields it as a weapon against those who would attack Hilda and her Riders.

We hope you enjoy racking up Bounties, getting to grips with your new toys, and putting your Gun Racks to good use. Good luck, gunslingers! You’re gonna need it…

Wizard With a Gun is out now for Xbox Series X|S. The Bounty of Guns update arrives for free today.

Galacticare Exclusive Hands On: A Delightfully Witty Management Sim That Puts Narrative First

There is often no greater time sink than a good management simulator, and when they come as witty and delightful as Galacticare, it’s even harder to put them down. Galacticare is a bizarre and brilliant strategy game where you’re tasked with the running of an interstellar health company, managing hospitals, discovering weird, alien ailments, and finding ways to cure them. Xbox Wire was fortunate enough to get our hands-on a never-before-seen level, and speak with Galacticare Creative Director Josh Bishop about the makings of this wacky adventure.

Bishop tells us that crafting a hospital game was developer Brightrock Games’ vision from the outset, but they wanted to build more than a management simulator. The team wanted to push the boundaries of the genre’s mechanics, while putting a fun, unique narrative at the forefront of the experience.

“The backdrop that gave us the most freedom to explore was the choice to set the game in space,” Bishop says. “Being able to create a whole galaxy with eccentric alien species, unusual diseases and out of this world technology would not have been possible without a setting of this kind.”

The space setting also makes way for this cast of quirky, non-human characters to engage in similarly wacky stories, which was important for the team. This shines through in Galacticare‘s clever dialogue; the recurring characters are a cast to get to know, not just an aimless NPC to prop up the gameplay.

“Often with simulator games, narrative is secondary. For us, it was one of our primary goals: to give the game, the world, a story that the player will remember,” Bishop says.

Often with simulator games, narrative is secondary.
For us, it was one of our primary goals.

“As the main character, we want you to feel a part of this episodic journey through the stars. The dialogue is a huge part of crafting that with our players, immersing themselves in a colourful galaxy that they play one of the most significant parts in.”

We got a taste of this during our playthrough of Many Me, the sixth level of Galacticare‘s story mode. Here your job is to organise and treat clones of a single character, the villainous geneticist Dr Ohdious. The plot twist? This is not a hospital, it’s a prison, built to house Dr Ohdious and his many illegal clones. Due to security issues, you’ll need to create more clones to help cure the inmates, rather than hiring outside talent for the jobs at hand.

“Dr Ohdious, the consultant for this level, was actually one of the first consultants we designed, knowing that we wanted to create a level focused solely around him,” Bishop tells us. “His maverick approach to cloning gave us a vehicle to twist the gameplay into a unique experience mechanically and narratively for players: clone your own doctors.”

Fortunately, Dr. Ohdious has seen fit to share his knowledge of cloning with us, at least. This level also opens up the Cerebral Rehab, alongside the ability to clone your staff, or wipe the minds of existing employees, so they can re-train in whatever discipline you need. I get very attached to my subjects, to the ability to sculpt them to my precise (and often chaotic) needs was an extremely welcome change to Galacticare‘s formula.

Many Me isn’t alone in being a unique gameplay experience, either. Bishop tells us that many of the levels in Galacticare alter the core gameplay in various ways, which will keep you on your toes, and stop you from following the same pattern when you enter a brand new scenario.

Dr Ohdious is one of Galacticare‘s Consultants – one-of-a-kind doctors that can be unlocked as you progress through the story, and will remain on hand for recruitment in future levels. Each Consultant comes with their own unique personality and story, as well as their own abilities, which makes them both useful and memorable as you progress.

“Consultants play a vital component in guiding you through interesting gameplay choices and moment-to-moment decision making,” Bishop adds. “In a genre where choices can sometimes start narrowing once you’ve committed to a path – they aim to give flexibility and support.”

Many Me is just one of the extremely fun scenarios that Galacticare places you in, and I can’t wait to get fully stuck in to this zany universe. Scrub up for a truly out of this world experience when Galacticare launches on Xbox Series X|S later this year.
