Google rolled out significant upgrades for Gmail’s Help me write feature earlier this year, giving users the ability to dictate text prompts to easily draft an email. The company also previewed a new “Polish” feature that could fix drafts to create a structured email at the touch of a button. This feature is now rolling out to users along with new Help me write and Refine my draft shortcuts for Gmail on Android and iOS.

Google announced the rollout in a recent Workspace Updates blog, revealing that the new Polish option will be available as part of Help me write’s Refine my draft feature on Gmail for mobile and web. With this feature, you’ll be able to enter rough notes into a draft and Gemini will “turn the content into a completely formal draft, ready for you to review in one click.”

Google introduced a new set of ringtones, alarms, and notification sounds with the Pixel 9 series earlier this month. The collection, dubbed “Sound Matters,” is composed of “the beautiful and diverse sounds of birdsong,” and it’s now rolling out to older Pixel models.

The Sound Matters collection includes six new ringtones, six alarm sounds, and four notification sounds that will be available on Pixel 4 and newer models. The collection is rolling out with version 3.1 (642123347) of Google’s Sounds app (via 9to5Google), and it should reach all users in the coming days.

You can find these ringtones and notification sounds by navigating to the Sound & vibration option in the device settings and selecting the Sound Matters collection in the Phone ringtone, Default notification sound, and Default alarm sound options. Google says that it partnered with award-winning wildlife sound recordist George Vlad to capture these sounds in the remote and wild areas of Botswana and Zimbabwe. The company has released a one-hour recording of the Full Dawn Chorus on the Made by Google YouTube channel. This recording will also be available in the Fitbit app.

Google has been working on adding dual-SIM support for RCS chats in Google Messages for quite a while. Code related to the feature first appeared in a beta version of the app in January this year, after which the feature briefly rolled out for a few users. Google subsequently pulled the feature, but it might now be ready for rollout.

According to a recent report on Reddit (via 9to5Google), dual-SIM support for RCS chats has appeared again with the latest Google Messages beta (version 20240813_00_RC00) for a Nothing Phone 2 user in India. A screenshot of the RCS chat settings page shared by the user shows two connected SIM cards underneath the option to enable RCS chats.

The screenshot also includes a new “Backup format for sending attachments” setting with a description stating “SMS with a link.” This setting seems to be related to the Google Photos integration that was removed from the Messages app last year, which allowed users to upload media to the cloud and share it as a link to avoid compression. It’s not clear if this feature is making a comeback, as it’s not live in the beta release.

Dual-SIM support for RCS chats, on the other hand, is live in the beta release and will likely reach users on the stable channel with a future update. However, Google has yet to announce the rollout officially, so we may have to wait a while before it’s widely available.

Google lets you customize the Discover feed on your device to show news and updates based on your interests. In addition, it lets you add four cards at the top of the feed that show you the current air quality and weather in your location, along with stock prices from a customized company watchlist and score updates from your favorite sports teams. Soon, Google could add another card to the mix that will provide updates on new and upcoming movies and TV shows.

We spotted the upcoming card in a teardown of the latest beta update for the Google app (version 15.32.37.28) and managed to enable it ahead of the official rollout. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the Customize menu for the Discover feed will show a new TV and Movies option when the card rolls out.

Enabling the TV and Movies option will add a new card at the top of the feed underneath the Search bar, which will show information about new and upcoming movies and TV shows. For movies, the card will include the title and runtime, along with a small preview of the movie’s poster. The card will also highlight if the movie is playing in theaters or if it’s available on another platform.

We were not able to surface a similar card for a TV show, so we can’t confirm if it will be any different. But we expect it to include basic information like the title, a poster, the platform on which the show is available, and perhaps the number of episodes. We’ll have to wait until the official rollout to know for sure.

The Google Search widget on Android offers a few customization options that let you change the Google logo shown in the widget and adjust the search bar shape and transparency. Google even gives you granular hue and saturation adjustments to help you manually change the widget’s color. However, the widget currently doesn’t support Dynamic Color, which automatically matches the widget’s colors to your system theme. Google might soon address that with an upcoming redesign, but it might remove a few customization options.

9to5Google has spotted an upcoming Google Search widget redesign in the latest Google app beta update (version 15.30.x). The redesign replaces the hue and saturation adjustments with a new Device color theme that automatically adjusts the widget’s color per your device’s current theme.

Google first showcased the feature at I/O this year and, while it’s yet to roll out, we’ve managed to enable it manually to give you an early look.

OnePlus has confirmed that it will launch a new version of its flagship foldable on August 7. In the days leading up to the launch, the company revealed that the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will come in a new Crimson Shadown colorway with a faux leather finish, feature enhanced storage, and offer new AI image editing capabilities. In addition, OnePlus has now confirmed that the upcoming model will come with a new VIP mode.

OnePlus recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will offer a new VIP mode for enhanced privacy. Although the company has not shared any details about this mode, we believe it will likely be the same as the VIP mode on the OPPO Find N3 and Find X7 Ultra.

The video included in OnePlus’ post confirms this, as it’s a clip of the VIP mode animation from the aforementioned OPPO devices. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that the VIP mode on the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will allow users to easily disable the camera, microphone, and location access using the alert slider.

We don’t expect to see any major hardware improvements on the Apex Edition model. OnePlus is likely reserving those for the OnePlus Open 2, which is slated to arrive sometime next year.

Google announced a new School time feature with the Fitbit Ace LTE earlier this year to help students focus on learning during school hours. The company now plans to bring the feature to more devices, including Android phones, tablets, and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup.

For the unaware, the School time feature switches the device to a new home screen with limited functionality in order to avoid distractions during classes. The feature works a bit like focus mode on Android and prevents kids from using non-essential apps.

Google says that the feature will gradually roll out to more devices over the next year. Once it’s available, parents will be able to schedule School time on their kids’ devices using the Family Link app. The app will also let parents select which apps are available when School time is active and choose specific contacts that can call or text their kids’ devices.

Along with School time, Google is also working on bringing new parental control features for teens. These include new supervision features for YouTube that will show parents their teens’ activity on the platform and Family Link supervision for kids of all ages. The YouTube supervision features will roll out with an update later this summer.

Currently, Google has not shared a definite release timeline for the School time feature. We’ll let you know as soon as it starts showing up on more device types.

Samsung’s mobile division (MX) seems to be in hot water for aping Apple’s design language with the new Galaxy Buds 3 series and Galaxy Watch Ultra. In addition to facing flak from fans, Samsung MX has reportedly drawn the ire of Samsung Electronics’ Chairman Jay Y. Lee.

As per a recent report from Korean media outlet AjuNews (via SamMobile), Lee recently ordered Samsung MX to reevaluate its plans and took strict action against some executives, including the division’s President TM Roh.

Insiders familiar with the developments have revealed that Lee “stepped in after the controversy over Apple’s design plagiarism and quality issues surrounding the Buds 3 series and Galaxy Watch 7 released last month. The internal atmosphere is currently very bad.”

In case you’re not in the loop, the entire controversy stems from Samsung’s design choices for the new Galaxy Buds 3, Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, and Galaxy Watch Ultra. These devices bear an uncanny resemblance to Apple’s AirPods, AirPods Pro, and the Apple Watch Ultra.

With the new earbuds, Samsung has moved away from its iconic bean-shaped design and opted for an AirPods-like design with stems. The charging case is also nearly identical, and Samsung has even implemented pinch and swipe gestures similar to the AirPods.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s boxy and chunky design with orange accents makes it look a lot like the Apple Watch Ultra. The orange quick button on the side and the strap choices also resemble Apple’s top-end smartwatch.

On top of the copied designs, Samsung also faced quality control issues with the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. The company was forced to suspend sales when early buyers reported various issues with the earbuds, including fragile ear tips that were prone to tearing. This seems to have been another cause for concern for the group’s chairman.

These developments could force Samsung MX to reevaluate its recent choices and do better with upcoming products. However, we’ll probably have to wait a while to see how things unfold as the next major Galaxy launch is still a few months away.

Google is finally rolling out the Maps bottom bar redesign it first showcased at I/O this May. The simplified design briefly appeared for some users earlier this year, but it’s now widely available with Google Maps for Android version 11.138.x.

Google Maps’ bottom bar previously featured five tabs: Explore, Go, Saved, Contribute, and Updates. As you can see in the following screenshots, the redesigned bottom bar has just three tabs: Explore, You, and Contribute.

9to5Google reports that the Explore and Contribute tabs still offer the same functionality as before, but the new You tab now includes features previously offered in the Go, Saved and Updates tabs. The You tab is essentially a renamed version of the old Saved tab, and it’s largely the same in terms of the UI and features. However, it now also offers features from the Go and Updates tabs.

The Go tab’s features are now condensed into a new “Saved trips” option in the Your lists section on the You tab, and it gives you quick access to your favorite trips. Similarly, the notifications and messages options from the Updates tab have found a new place in the top right corner of the You tab.

The bottom bar refresh follows Google Maps’ new sheet-based redesign, which rolled out to users last month. It replaces full-screen UI elements with new sheets that float above the map and make more efficient use of the screen real estate. The updated Google Maps UI with the floating sheets and compact bottom bar is currently limited to Android. It’s not clear when these changes will make it to the iOS version of the app.

Google Contacts is getting a couple of quality-of-life upgrades for contact syncing. Evidence spotted in a teardown of version 4.37.39 of the app suggests that the app could soon get a new section in the settings menu to help users easily sync contacts. In addition, the app could also start showing synced Google account details in contact cards with a future update.

We’ve enabled both the upcoming changes ahead of the rollout to give you an early look. As you can see in the following screenshots, the new contact sync section will appear at the top of the app settings and show the linked account with the number of synced contacts.

The new section will also show when the app last synced contacts and provide a shortcut to the sync settings. The synced account details, on the other hand, will appear at the bottom of the contact details page within a new section titled “Contact info from.”

This section will either show the linked email ID for the contact or show a “Device” tag in case the contact is saved on the device. If the contact is synced from an account, the contact page will also show a new “Report illegal profile content” button to report contacts that include something that goes against Google’s policies. The button will redirect to a Legal Help support page where you’ll be able to submit additional details before filing a report.

Although minor, these changes should improve the contact syncing experience in Google Contacts, and we can’t wait for them to roll out with a future update.

Google Play might soon help users fix issues resulting in a failed Play Protect certification. We’ve spotted an upcoming feature in Google Play Store version 42.1.21 that could either address the Play Protect certification error or provide details about why a device is not certified.

The latest Play Store release includes evidence suggesting that Google could add a new “Fix device issue” button to the Play Protect certification option in the Play Store settings. This button will likely appear on devices that fail the Play Protect certification, and let users address the issue by performing a few checks.

As you can see in the following video, the feature delivered a “Couldn’t fix device certification issue” on our test device. It also showed a “Reason code” that states the device did not meet Play Integrity requirements, along with a link to a support page highlighting how users can fix Play Protect certification status issues.

At the moment, we are unaware of the checks the feature runs to fix the Play Protect certification issue. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more details. Until then, if you’re getting a Play Protect certification error on your device, you may want to try registering your device by submitting your Google Services Framework Android ID on this Device registration page.

Gemini will soon get a host of new extensions that will enable integration with various Google services. We recently shared details about a few of the upcoming extensions, and we’ve now managed to get an early look at the Keep, Tasks, and Calendar extensions ahead of the rollout.

As you can see in the following video, the Google Keep extension allows you to ask Gemini to create new notes and lists, add information to notes, and add or remove items from lists.

The Google Tasks extension, on the other hand, lets you use Gemini to create new tasks, such as reminders. It also lets you easily view existing tasks and show their due dates.

Finally, the Google Calendar extension lets you create new calendar events, view all upcoming calendar events or ones on a specific date, and edit calendar events.

Google first teased these extensions at I/O earlier this year in May, and they finally seem ready for rollout. The extensions will likely let users do more than what we’ve shown in the videos above, but we’ll have to wait until the official release to get a complete picture of the extensions’ capabilities.

Samsung is gearing up for the second big Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, where it will likely unveil its next-gen foldables, tablets, and wearables. Although the company has yet to announce the event, a retailer has accidentally confirmed that it will take place on July 10, 2024.

According to a recent report from Tweakers (via Sammobile), Dutch retailer mobiel.nl updated its website with a new banner earlier today, confirming that Samsung will host its next Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10. The banner includes a graphic that alludes to the upcoming foldables and features the stars from the Galaxy AI logo, suggesting that the company could announce new AI features at the event.

After debuting the Blackmagic Camera app on iOS last year, Blackmagic Design has finally brought its highly acclaimed professional video camera app to Android. The free app features complete manual controls to help you capture cinematic videos and packs a ton of useful features.

In a press release highlighting the launch, Blackmagic Design says the app is based on the same “operating system” as the company’s digital film cameras and gives Android users access to a wide range of professional tools. The app has a feature-rich HUD with quick access to important controls, along with status and record parameters, a histogram, focus peaking, levels, and frame guides.

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users in many parts of the world are facing connectivity issues. The problem doesn’t appear to be widespread and predominantly affects those who use the device’s built-in VPN.

According to 9to5Google, multiple user reports on the r/GooglePixel subreddit highlight issues ranging from the inability to access specific apps or websites to complete loss of connectivity. In most cases, disabling the new VPN by Google seems to get users back online. However, the issue also appears to affect users in regions where Google does not offer its VPN service, leaving no option for a temporary fix.

Some state that the latest update for the Google One app, which has started reaching users today, seems to resolve the issue. However, it might be a while before it reaches all affected users. In the meantime, you can try disabling the VPN for a quick fix. A Google support page related to the VPN by Google One shutdown also recommends users deactivate the VPN from system settings if they face internet connection issues. You can also try deleting your Google One VPN profile and disabling the VPN within the Google One app if that doesn’t help.

Google has replaced VPN by Google One with VPN by Google, which started rolling out to Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Pixel Fold users earlier this month. The service debuted with the Pixel 8 last year and offers better system integration for a more seamless experience. However, connectivity issues like these may push users towards other alternatives.

Google has been running pilot programs to support real-money gaming (RMG) apps on the Play Store in several regions for a while now. Earlier this year, the company announced it would expand support for more game types and operators in India, Brazil, and Mexico starting in July. But it has now paused the expansion citing challenges in markets that lack proper licensing frameworks.

TechCrunch reports that Google is keen on supporting more types of RMG apps on the Play Store, but it has faced issues identifying the type of games allowed in markets that don’t have a central body to approve such apps. The company seems to have taken this step to avoid unwanted regulatory hurdles.

In a statement outlining the development, a Google spokesperson had this to say:

Expanding our support of real-money gaming apps in markets without a central licensing framework has proven more difficult than expected and we need additional time to get it right for our developer partners and the safety of our users. Google Play remains deeply committed to helping all developers responsibly build new businesses and reach wider audiences across a variety of content types and genres.

The company has clarified that while it won’t expand support for new types of RMG apps, those released as part of the pilot program in India will continue to operate. It isn’t immediately clear if this also applies to apps released during the pilot program in Mexico.

Although Google may have paused the expansion, it’s still trying to develop a suitable framework to offer a wider range of RMG apps on the Play Store. It is also working on introducing a new service fee structure for such apps, but it has yet to work out all the details.

The Wireless Power Consortium announced the faster Qi2 standard for wireless charging at CES last year with several manufacturers showcasing chargers featuring the new tech. These products are now slowly making their way to the market, even though most Android flagship phones have yet to adopt the standard.

Satechi’s new Qi2 Wireless Car Charger is the latest addition to the lineup, featuring a sleek design with a Space Gray finish that won’t look out of place in most cars. The charger offers 15W wireless charging support — twice as fast as the 7.5W charging output offered by standard Qi chargers. Sadly, only MagSafe-compatible iPhones, i.e. iPhone 12 to iPhone 15 series, can make use of the faster wireless charging speeds at the moment.

Although the Satechi Qi2 Wireless Car Charger will work with standard Qi devices, charging speeds will be limited and you may need additional hardware, like a magnetic sticker or magnetic phone case, to keep your device securely in place. The wireless charger includes integrated magnets that comply with the updated standard, which ensures proper alignment with the phone’s wireless charging coils to improve power transfer and efficiency.

The Satechi Qi2 Wireless Car Charger is available for $59.99 through the company’s website, and it’s a great buy for those who have one of the recent iPhone models. Android OEMs will hopefully adopt the standard soon, so the charger is worth considering if you want to future-proof your purchase. It ships with a one-meter USB-C cable and a 25W cigarette lighter adapter that you can use for wired fast charging in a pinch.

OnePlus is likely working on an upgraded version of the OnePlus Watch 2, which could address one of its main shortcomings: the lack of LTE support.

MySmartPrice has spotted an unreleased OnePlus smartwatch with the model number OPWW234 in a certification filing submitted to China’s regulatory body TENAA. The filing includes a render showcasing a smartwatch that looks strikingly similar to the OnePlus Watch 2 with a circular dial and two buttons on the right side.

While the upcoming model might not feature major design changes, the listing adds that it will include LTE connectivity via eSIM and support eSIMs from China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile. Like the OnePlus Watch 2, it will also include Bluetooth, GPS, BeiDou, NFC, GLONASS, and WLAN support.

The international variant of the unreleased smartwatch with the model number OPWWE234 appeared on India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification site and in the TUV Rheinland database earlier this month. As per those listings, the model will bear further similarities with the OnePlus Watch 2, like a 500mAh battery. A 3C certification listing of the Chinese model has also highlighted the same 10W charging capability.

Due to these similarities, we suspect that the device could just be an LTE variant of the OnePlus Watch 2. Add to that the fact that it has only been a few months since the OnePlus Watch 2 hit the market, it’s highly unlikely for the company to release a full-fledged successor.

We might not have to wait too long to know for sure, as companies generally submit regulatory filings close to launch. OnePlus will likely release the watch in China and India. We don’t have any indication of a wider global launch.

The Paris 2024-themed accessories are currently on sale in France, with a few products limited to Samsung’s website. At the moment, we don’t have information regarding a wider release. We expect the company to launch the accessories in other regions ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games opening ceremony next month.
