Ever since its reveal in 2020, Black Myth: Wukong has been an alluring project. Developer Game Science has been surprisingly open in comparison to other AAA studios and the game's apparent ambitions have been reinforced with each and every press release: a hero-focused action game retelling the story of Journey to the West, and a graphical tour de force using the latest Unreal Engine features. In fact, on PC Wukong uses the Nvidia branch of UE5 to enable full ray tracing, promising an even more impressive presentation. With the full game in hand, it's time to see if Game Science has fulfilled the graphical promise of that first trailer, how the RT features work on PC, and what optimised settings can be used to deliver a smooth experience on a range of hardware. Enough monkey business then, let's get right into it.

From the moment the game starts up, it's clear that Game Science has delivered a level of graphical fidelity that surpasses that of the initial trailer. The dazzling intro to the game dazzles, with titanic mythical beings looming over you and an entire area replete with unique volumetric rendering that's unfortunately rare in the modern age.

With each and every dash, staff swipe and bit of movement, the main character and his nemesis distort and move the physical volume of fog that they find themselves in. Beyond Housemarque's Returnal and some legacy PhysX titles, real physicalised particles like this are rare, and Game Science made sure to use this GPU-intensive effect effectively to add a mystical flourish to game moments and character entrances.

Why VRR is not a magic bullet for fixing poor performance

14. Srpen 2024 v 16:12

It began in 2013 with the arrival of Nvidia G-Sync - the first form of variable refresh rate (VRR) display technology. Rather than attempt to synchronise, or not synchronise GPU output with your screen, the host hardware took control - kicking off a new display refresh when the GPU was ready with a new grame. V-sync judder didn't happen, screen-tearing would (by and large!) disappear. FreeSync and HDMI VRR would follow, but essentially they all did the same thing - smoothing off variable performance levels and delivering a superior gameplay experience. But let's be clear: VRR is not a cure-all. It's not a saviour for poor game performance. It has its limits and it's important to understand them and in the process, we'll gain a better understanding of performance more generally - and why frame-rate isn't that important compared to other, more granular metrics.

Let's talk about VRR basics. Displays have a native refresh rate - whether it's 60Hz, 120Hz, 165Hz or whatever. Without VRR you have limited options for smooth, consistent play. First of all, there's the idea of matching game frame-rate to the screen's refresh rate. Every display refresh gets a new frame. The most popular example of this is the 'locked 60 frames per second' concept, where a new frame is generated every 16.7ms to match the refresh rate of a 60Hz screen - a truly tricky thing to deliver on consoles while maxing out their capabilities.

Secondly, you can ask your hardware to offer a clean divider of the refresh rate - the classic example being a 30fps game running on a 60Hz screen. In this case, every other refresh receives a new frame from the source hardware. There are issues with this, like ghosting, for example, but this is the classic compromise for maintaining consistency when unable to match the refresh rate.

Crime Scene Cleaner Italian Job Safe Walkthrough

In the mission The Italian Job you can find a key that’ll make things interesting in the office. To find the key, you’ll have to make your way to the restaurant’s kitchen. You may have passed this already so you’ll have to backtrack a bit.

There’s a drawer on the kitchen counter that will contain what’s noted as an “unknown key”. This one is the one that gets you to the gambling room.

In the office, there’s a hidden door that you’ll have to find in order to make it to the safe. This is a trapdoor found on the ground. If you go to where the darts game is and look around the floor you should find it easily.

From here there’ll be a door that the unknown key opens which will let you into the casino. There’s a safe on the wall that you can crack to complete this achievement.

Crime Scene Cleaner VIP Card Walkthrough

During the Trial by Blood mission you have the chance to find and use a VIP card to unlock some of the secret rooms which can help trigger an achievement. The first step to all of this is finding the card.

By going to the Solarium you should find a locker card noted as W024. What this means is it will open women’s locker 024. Head to the women’s lockers and open locker 24 and you’ll find another card. Not the V.I.P card though.

In this locker is actually a seperate card for M024. Yes, you now have to make your way to the men’s lockers and open locker 24. In here is the VIP card that will set the next events in motion.

With the VIP card in hand you now have to figure out how to use it. By going through to the pump room where the water controls are you can use the card to unlock a secret door off to the side of the pool. Through this door is a hidden room with some valuable items. More importantly, this should pop the achievement for ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ and complete the additional task for this mission.

Dredge Devils Spine Samples Walkthrough (Iron Rig DLC)

You likely know the rodeo by now. After bringing the last set of samples back to the scientist there’s another issue which causes more of the mysterious black substance to appear in the gameworld. This time it is in the notoriously difficult Devil’s Spine region. The scientist appears to be actively scared this time so you know the story is progressing somewhere with this latest incident.

You’ll have to again upgrade your equipment before being able to complete this section. Not only do you need an infused rod but it has to be fireproof(!) so it’s time to bring some resources to the engineer’s again.

To get this newest upgrade you have to bring an Ironhaven crate, Dark Canister, and heat-resistant line which will provide you with the Infused Fireproof rod and enable you to fish in the Devil’s Spine.

There’s a crab catch for this sample as well so set down a crab pot as soon as you can and let it work away while you go to catch the necessary samples. The samples are found in the black pools which are marked clearly as Disturbed Water so you’ll know where to look.

To complete this area and get the necessary samples you’ll need to find the following:

  • Dunkleosteus
  • Giant Dragonfish
  • Sea Scorpion
  • Vetuluciloa

With that, you can bring this set of samples back to the scientist and trigger the next actions in the game, which appear to be the conclusion of the Iron Rig DLC’s arc.

Dredge Twisted Strand Guide for Iron Rig DLC

Things on the rig continue to go wrong as the drill activates again and causes the mysterious ooze to infect a new area. This time around it is in the Twisted Strand. This will cause the scientist to need new samples as the black substance brings with it some new fish that need to be studied, this appears to be the main gameplay loop of this DLC.

Once again to complete a new region you have to have the right equipment to make sure you can catch the requires fish. This time around you’ll need an Infused Coiling Rod in order to catch the fish. So if you’ve been trying with no luck to get the sample it might be best to check your equipment.

Again you have to speak to the engineer in the factory and provide the right materials in order to get an upgrade. This time you’ll need an Ironhaven Crate, Dark Canister, Anti-Tangle line, and an already purchased Mangrove Rode. By providing these materials you’ll be rewarded with the Infused Coiling Rod to complete this section.

Once again there is a crab catch so let off a crab pot in the Twisted Strand before fishing to save some time. You should then fish in the black water which will be clearly marked on the screen as Disturbed Water.

You’ll have to get the following samples to complete this task:

  • Boreaspis
  • Opabinia
  • Nipponites
  • Xinphactinus

With these fish caught you can return them to the scientist to complete this section of the Iron Rig DLC and proceed to the next set of samples.

Dredge Gale Cliffs Samples Tips

After bringing back the samples from The Marrows you’ll be informed that there’s still some new areas to get fish from. This is due to the drill’s action causing some widespread chaos with the eruption of the black ooze. Despite the drill retracting, the damage has been done.

First things first, you have to get another rod, the one provided by the scientist for The Marrows won’t sufficiently do the job so you’ll need to go to the factory on The Rig. By talking to the engineer and providing an Ironhaven Crate and a Hydraulic Rod you’ll get the latest invention.

With this invention, you’ll be able to use an Infused Winch, providing you with the best fishing power yet in all kinds of waters. You actively cannot complete this section without the Infused Winch so if you’ve been fishing and had no luck that’s likely why. This advancement is needed to fish properly in the murky waters around the cliffs.

Fish in the oily spots around the Gale Cliffs and use a Crab Pot in the area as one of the required samples is a Crab Pot catch only. You’ll know you’re in the correct spot as the screen will display that you’re in Disturbed Water. By doing this you should be able to catch the necessary samples for the scientist which are:

  • Lancetfish
  • Nautilus
  • Sollasina
  • Trilobite

With these collected, head back to the scientist to provide the samples and advance the story, thus completing the Gale Cliffs samples section.

Dredge The Marrows Samples Tips

After activating the Iron Rig’s missions you’ll be asked by a scientist to get fish samples after the rig causes an eruption of black ooze to infect the water. You’ll be tasked with The Marrows and soon after the Gale Cliffs but for now I’ll be focusing on The Marrows.

By going back to The Marrows it’s pretty clear what’s changed as their are some oily pools of water to fish in. You will have to use a new fishing rod from this DLC which is given to you by the scientist, this new equipment will need to be levelled up as you play through this new part of the game.

The Infused Rod given to you in this DLC does provide a canon explanation for why you’re able to catch new fish which is a nice touch, not to mention the contamination could cause some fish to be out of their usual places that were outside your depth previously.

By fishing in the oily patches, you should be able to find the new fish samples needed to complete the mission. Specifically though you will be looking for:

  • Osteostracan
  • Paddlefish
  • Sea Cucumber
  • Tullimonstrum

You’ll know if you’re in the right spots as the radar will tell you that you’re in disturbed water when you’re in the correct places.

With these fish caught you can bring them back to the scientist to provide all of the necessary samples from The Marrows and continue on to the next part of the DLC content.

Supermarket Together TV Explained

One of the many things you can buy in Supermarket Together for your store is a television. When you stock and place it it’s clear that you can interact with the TV, but so far nobody has been able to make something happen.

As of now, that’s because the necessary features haven’t been added, making the TVs purely decorational for the time being. There is a plan from the developers to discuss the TVs functionality soon but as of this writing the game doesn’t allow the player to fully engage with the televisions.

Supermarket Together Sell Items Walkthrough

One of the only small issues with Supermarket Together is it often leaves things up to the player to figure out. Some small details like how to sell your unwanted items aren’t really covered which has lead to some confusion from players on what to do.

Thankfully, the process of selling items is fairly simple and it is reminiscent of other scaled-back sims that *insert job here* simulation games have used before.

Go into your office and find the Manager Blackboard. On the right hand side there’s a tablet that you can pick up. This tablet should, when picked up, be set to remove items.

Bring the tablet with you and point it towards the item you want to sell and make sure there’s a red outline on it, by right clicking you will successfully sell the item and remove it from your store. This does only give you back a percentage of what you originally paid so if you made an accidental purchase you will just have to eat the loss.

As I said, very simple mechanic that’s very similar to popular games like the House Renovator title where the tablet was the hub of activity, Supermarket Together kept that trend going. There are other things that the tablet can do but you’ll be able to see what they are on screen anyway.

Spill the Beans Walkthrough – Thank Goodness You’re Here

The Spill the Beans achievement/trophy wants you to kick a man when he’s down. There’s a lot of people who are down in this game and there’s a lot of people you mess with so just which character to interact with is a bit of a mystery at first.

In order to complete Spill the Beans, you’ll have to get near the end of a playthrough where at Nick’s Bricks there will be a man outside cooking beans over a fire. If you slap this man, you will complete the achievement.

Yep, that’s all. Just smack a presumably homeless person trying to cook beans and you’ll succeed.

Live Service Killed the Suicide Squad

Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was recently available for free on Amazon, so I decided to give it a try. Overall, it was a fun comic book romp, and I think it could have easily become a beloved franchise if not for the cascading ramifications of its live service trappings. These are my speculations as to how live service shaped its game design, and why some people believe it is responsible for killing the Suicide Squad (SS).

Live Service Killed the Suicide Squad
Source: Author.

One of the main criticisms I saw floating around was why all these iconic characters like King Shark and Captain BOOMERANG were given guns instead of unique combat styles. The financial incentive to keep players coming back for a live service model demands infinite scalability. A loot system based around guns is easy to make, can be given to any character, and can be infused with any number of stats and mods. It broadens the build variety, but the consequence is a homogenization of the individual traits that make each SS character interesting. It's a particular shame considering how different all their traversal styles feel.

This homogenization consequently affects enemy design, requiring all of them to be killable with guns. So despite the enemies' various gimmicks, your strategy ultimately doesn’t change very much no matter who you're playing. This lack of necessity in dealing with your foes is a sobering contrast to Rocksteady’s previous Arkham games, and even Guardians of the Galaxy, which had you coordinating with your squad to overcome certain foes.

The talent trees alleviate some of this uniformity to encourage certain play styles. Since the game is online co-op, I imagine Rocksteady wanted players to create unique versions of each character. One player's Harley might be a "Run-and-Gunner," while another might be a "Slugger", a decision that thematically fits with the narrative of multiple (Elseworld) dimensions.

Live Service Killed the Suicide Squad

The financial incentive to keep players coming back for a live service model demands infinite scalability.

However, the talents still need to exist within the framework of the gunplay and live service model, which pumps out seasonal content in the form of new weapons and mods. Designing talents to be future-proof is no easy task, requiring a very rigid structure (see homogenization). The result is a lot of passive talents, further obfuscated by its dependence on a combo meter to activate. This makes it difficult to capitalize on or feel empowered by your talent choices.

While I feel the decision to include co-op was a bold and worthy pursuit, the homogenized gameplay and unimpressive talents across all characters don't fulfill the fantasy of making a character your own. This is further exacerbated by the requirements of a single-character/co-op shooter where players have to feel self-reliant. There can’t be “puzzles” that only one character can solve. All of this combined fundamentally detracts from the appeal of an SS game about a found family covering for each other’s weaknesses. There's a very clear mismatch with the thematic goals that should have driven the game, versus the retention model of the live service genre.

While I feel the decision to include co-op was a bold and worthy pursuit, the homogenized gameplay and unimpressive talents across all characters don't fulfill the fantasy of making a character your own.

Ironically, SS’s best feature — its traversal – is also its least synergistic. It makes gunplay frenetic, with enemies occupying huge vertical swathes of the environment. It makes your proximity to your team unpredictable, which is probably why there are no team-up actions in the game. And I assume it made the camera finicky in interior spaces, which forced all the gameplay to occur outside. Who knows if traversal dictated mission design or vice versa, but the live service model necessitated a structure that could be repeatedly used anywhere. So they embraced the outdoor gameplay, where any and all objectives could spawn on rooftops no matter what district or dimension you’re in. The resulting lack of mission diversity is abundantly felt in a Metropolis that doesn’t feel lived in and is just a forgettable transitory space to move between repetitive tasks.

While mission modifiers are fun, you expect bespoke experiences from a premium game, especially when the Justice League is concerned! Rocksteady’s Arkham series blended the scale of gameplay brilliantly, from soaring over Gotham to entering a parlor on street level to confront Professor Pyg. That artistry in crafting memorable gameplay moments stems from its inherently singular nature — and nothing in a live service game can be made to be singular. (Except its cutscenes which are a definite standout here.)

Live Service Killed the Suicide Squad
Source: Author.

A co-op blend of Sunset Overdrive and Doom Eternal sounds like a home-run concept, but the additional factor of a squad, filled with iconic characters in their own right, goes wholly unutilized. The unfortunate decision to pursue live service cornered Rocksteady into creating a rote structure that they’re now caged in when the universe of SS called for bombastic set pieces.

It goes on for pretty much 2000 blocks in every direction (not including the Y axis) and that world is only 6 MB. How is this possible?

"Uncover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily," reads the trailer's YouTube description. "Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for."

It marked a massive and generally unexcepted reveal to close out gamescom Opening Night Live. A new Mafia game had been hinted at in the past, but this is the first official unveiling of The Old Country.

2K Games started the Mafia series all the way back in 2002, followed by Mafia II in 2010 and Mafia III in 2016, the most recent mainline Mafia game. Mafia III was also the first to be developed by 2K's Hangar 13, which also developed the remake of the first Mafia game, Mafia: Definitive Edition, in 2020.

Hangar 13 General Manager Roman Hladík and Head of Production and Media Director Tomáš Hřebíček previously confirmed that the studio was working on an "all-new Mafia project" in 2022, with Hladik saying at the time, "While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories."

We're still awaiting more information, of course, but the reveal of its setting will no doubt get fan theories spinning. In the meantime, check out our roundup of everything announced at gamescom Opening Night Live.

Starfield's Shattered Space DLC Reveals September Release Date | gamescom 2024

20. Srpen 2024 v 21:16

Shattered Space, the highly anticipated upcoming DLC for Bethesda's Starfield, will officially be releasing on September 30.

The announcement was made today at gamescom Opening Night Live, where it was also revealed that a new vehicle, the Rev-8, will be made available in a free update tonight. We got to see the vehicle in action in footage unveiled at gamescom, showing off some fun world exploration.

Shattered Space, too, got a brief tease in the footage, although it didn't show too much outside of a darker tone, with much of the focus begin on the Rev-8.

Shattered Space got its first trailer back in June during the Xbox Games Showcase, and it'll focus on a mysterious new faction called House Va'Ruun. "Investigate a frightening cosmic threat, explore a new planet, and find unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear in this all-new adventure," Starfield's official website explains in a page dedicated to the Shattered Space expansion.

Bethesda confirmed it was working on the story expansion in 2023, but we've been waiting for a release date since then. It's set to arrive both on Xbox and PC.

We gave Starfield a 7/10 when we reviewed it last year, writing at the time that it "has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist."

What the hell is Death Stranding?

This is all anyone has wanted to know since Hideo Kojima unveiled the project three years ago. In that unveiling, all we knew was that it starred a naked Norman Reedus, that there were babies, dead sea creatures, and weird floating people. Not a lot to go on, but given Kojima's long, weird history with the long, weird Metal Gear franchise, it was enough to get people talking excitedly about all the things it could possibly be.

Sam and his BB are a regular Lone Wolf and Cub...if the ronin was replaced with a post-apocalyptic Amazon delivery man, and the baby lived in a jar and detected angry ghosts.

As time has gone on, and even as Kojima has said he himself does not fully understand the game, a clearer picture began to take shape, and now that it is here, we can say definitively what Death Stranding is. It is a third-person action game, with a heavier-than-usual de-emphasis on the "action." It is a game about exploration in which there isn't that much to discover. It is a game about America that takes place in a world that bears only minimal resemblance whatsoever to the country it's portraying. It is a game that takes, at minimum, 10-15 hours to actually become "fun," and even then the definition of fun is one likely to vary wildly for its players. It is a Hideo Kojima game in which the story is the least appealing aspect of the whole endeavor. Ultimately, Death Stranding is a game that is unlike much else I've played before, and I'm not entirely sure if I want to play anything like it ever again.

In Death Stranding, you play Sam Porter Bridges. He is named that because he is a porter, tasked with delivering things to the citizens of a fractured, post-apocalyptic America, and because he is a member of Bridges, an organization dedicated to, well, building bridges--both literal and metaphorical--to those people in order to reconnect the country. Sam is a reluctant hero in the grand Kojima tradition. He's on his own, wandering the country and avoiding human contact because of past trauma, until the last President, Bridget Strand, pleads with him in her dying moments to help bring the "chiral network" back online, and reunite the country.

This network is powered by chiralium, the game's primary McGuffin. It's a magical element that all of the game's technology is based around, and also is related to the game's apocalypse. You see, there was the titular Death Stranding. The barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead was breached. The dead, represented here as sludgy ghosts attached to umbilical cords, roam chunks of the world and consume human bodies, creating "voidouts," which are basically ghost magic nuclear explosions. Also it rains time now, and if it touches you, it ages you and wrecks your equipment, which is bad.

Anyway, the chiral network. It's the super internet, and in order to reconnect America, you need to hook up the remaining cities and stations to it. Equipped with your trusty BB--a literal baby in a jar (😲) that helps you detect sludge ghosts through its link to its stillmother (😐) and the world of the dead--you do this by delivering packages to all those places. Rhythmically, this game has more in common with something like the Truck Simulator games than your standard third-person action game. As a porter, you schlep boxes of medicine and video games and semen to and from all these different stations throughout the world. Initially, all you've got are your backpack and your feet. The more jobs you take on, the more ludicrous the stack of packages on your back gets, and if you surpass Sam's weight limit, balancing and moving him becomes far more challenging.

Here's a gif we found on the internet that pretty well encapsulates what the early goings of Death Stranding are like.

Early on, this is a pain in the ass. You're constantly trying to navigate over rough terrain and through heavy patches of time rain and all you can do is hug the R2/L2 buttons to try to balance yourself. Eventually, you are given a variety of tools to make Sam's journeys more manageable. You start out with basic things like ladders and climbing ropes before graduating to portable, floating cargo trays and full-on trucks. Crafting all these tools takes small amounts of the various resources you'll find littered around the world, but even if you aren't looking to spend a lot of time building and placing things yourself, you may find that other players have been more than happy to do the work for you. Death Stranding includes an asynchronous online system that allows things built in other players' worlds to surface in yours. There are also straight up public works projects multiple players can contribute to, including whole highway builders that greatly mitigate the frustration of trying to navigate the world.

See, without those highways, vehicles aren't very useful. Death Stranding's vision of America looks like a combination of the Norwegian fjords and the surface of Mars. Rocks and cliffs are everywhere, and it's on you to build bridges (of course), highways, and whatever else is necessary to traverse these spaces. And even when you do invest heavily into the game's version of Infrastructure Week, the time rain will degrade any structure in the world, and if you don't add resources to repair them, they'll disappear.

In the opening hours, this doesn't matter as much because you're just on foot and hoofing it from place to place. When you finally get vehicles, using them mostly sucks because you're constantly driving into rocks. When you finally get highways you can build, it starts to feel a little like American Truck Simulator...if you had to craft the truck and the roads yourself. And then the game just kind of gives up on that infrastructure stuff and sends you off to the mountains to criss-cross huge, snow-deluged peaks that take a very long time to get around. And then it asks you to do that a bunch more until the game is essentially over.

I have several issues with Death Stranding, and one of them is pacing. This is a very lumpy game. The opening hours are a slog of endless, precarious walking and a near-constant deluge of new systems being presented to you. Then it just kind of settles into a rhythm of deliveries and discovering new places to deliver to, mostly putting the story on the back-burner until you finish the extremely long third chapter. After that, the A Hideo Kojima Production part of the game suddenly wakes up and you find yourself inundated with more cutscenes and character exposition than you'll ever know what to do with. The early hours have the feel of a child excitedly explaining to you the elaborate fantasy world they just came up with, and then the middle feels like the deep breath they take before launching into all the reasons why things are the way they are in that world. The last hour and change of the game is basically one long run-on sentence that tries to tie up every remaining loose end where you don't really do anything at all except listen to it ramble on.

There are moments of genuine, contemplative beauty in Death Stranding. It's just a shame the game wasn't confident enough to not break them up with extremely bland action and stealth sequences.

Look, it's not like previous Kojima games haven't had pacing issues, but Death Stranding is the most egregious example of it. It's not nearly confident enough to just rely on the delivery aspect of the game as its main thrust, so it changes things up with combat and stealth sequences that never feel all that great. Early on, combat is something you mostly want to avoid. Human enemies consist of MULES, a group of ex-porters who have been driven insane by the chemical boost they get for receiving "likes" from making deliveries (helloooooooo social media commentary!). They are a nuisance who will come after your cargo, but thankfully you can mostly just beat them senseless with a few quick mashes of the square button. By the time they give you bola guns and stun bombs, they become comically easy to dispatch. BTs, the aforementioned sludge ghosts, need to be avoided until you learn how to make bullets and grenades from your own blood. If you do bump into one, you have to trudge your way through a pool of moaning tar bodies while mashing square to escape. If you fail, you get whisked away to a space some distance away and fight a giant tar animal, for reasons.

To be absolutely clear: these parts of the game are never all that fun. They are not broken or really even difficult; they're merely an oft-tedious distraction. They're the thing you do that's most analogous to Kojima's previous works, but the fights are never very memorable. Whenever a BT section or boss fight cropped up, I often found myself annoyed that my delivery missions were being sidelined, and that is not something I expected to say about a game like this. If I enjoyed anything about playing Death Stranding, it was the moments of solitude I experienced as I wandered from place to place, the moments of quiet beauty as I crested some big hill to see a new city on the horizon. Death Stranding is a game that shines brightest when it's willing to get out of its own way and just let the player exist free of the constraints of its own narrative and need to intersperse its mundanity with middling action.

About that narrative. This being a Kojima game, there is of course a cast of strange characters that exist alongside Sam, helping his mission or standing directly in his way. Each of these characters has some kind of ludicrous backstory that they will eventually explain to you in excruciating detail, even though most of them are literally named after the primary thing that defines their existence in the game. And there are significant sections of the game where everything grinds to a halt so that Kojima (by way of one of these supporting characters) can either explain at length what's going on with any of the myriad bizarre concepts built into the game's narrative, or delve into the latest Wikipedia article he somehow found a way to graft onto the game's plot. None of these inclusions should be surprising, because this is the way Kojima directs his games.

What is surprising is just how flat the vast majority of it all falls. In the Metal Gear series, Kojima's goofy tangents and batshit character monologues felt, to me at least, like amusing digressions set against the series' action cinema bravado. That stuff doesn't come off as well in what is essentially his version of an Andrei Tarkovsky movie. Nothing is allowed to be all that mysterious, and the game constantly tips its hand regarding things that might be considered twists or surprises. Whether it's through monologues, in-game emails and interviews, or someone just flatly stating the premise of what's going on out loud as obviously as possible, very little in Death Stranding is allowed to exist without overwhelming explanation.

As weird and amusing as it is to see Kojima drop a bunch of his famous friends into his game, it would have been nice if he'd written more memorable characters for them.

There's also a surprising dearth of memorable characters. Norman Reedus' Sam is especially bland. In a way, he's the perfect video game protagonist, because nearly all he does is grunt and sigh. There's just not much personality to him, which is a bummer given how much time you spend with him throughout the game. The only actor who feels like they're truly on board with the weirdness of the whole thing is Mads Mikkelsen, who plays an otherworldly soldier wraith that pops up just often enough to remind you that Hideo Kojima used to make some games about war. He seems like he's relishing the role, which I can't quite say for most of the other actors involved. Actresses Lea Seydoux and Margaret Qualley do their best with some truly leaden dialogue, and Troy Baker at least tries to chew (or, more accurately, lick) some scenery as the deeply disappointing terrorist villain Higgs, who is named that because he thinks he's like the God particle, and frequently references video games because I guess someone in this game probably had to do that.

Frustratingly, I kept waiting for Death Stranding to offer something to say, something to justify the amount of breath spent explaining its most obvious metaphors and motivations. Unfortunately, it never gets there. Its early game musings on human connectedness and the need to bring people together never evolves over the 50 hours you'll spend playing it. The things it says at the beginning are pretty much the same things it's saying at the end, and none of those things are all that deep.

Even more frustratingly, there were multiple times during the course of my time spent playing Death Stranding that I could see the strands of a game I'd really like. There are individual pieces of the game that I think work well. It's gorgeous, for one thing, offering up a well-realized world with wonderfully unusual looking technology and terrific animation work. And there were times when I found myself genuinely lost in the experience of wandering that world, lugging gear from place to place, building roads and liking ladders and just drinking in the loneliness of it all. Even the massive pile of different systems all feel like they mostly work together in a way that's harmonious.

We get it, dude. You read Wikipedia.

But the whole of the game never achieves that balance. There's a deep thread of insecurity that runs through it, one that manifests in its unwillingness to commit all the way to the arduousness of its main character's task, that's too willing to break that quietness with mediocre action, and that never trusts the player to understand even its most basic ideas without hitting them over the head with them. There is a weirdo, avant spirit to Death Stranding that I do admire, but that spirit fails to carry the game anywhere worthwhile.

At least now we know what the hell Death Stranding is: a disappointment.

A MacBook can be a big investment, and the best MacBook for you isn’t necessarily the one with the highest price tag. MacBook laptops are known for their style, their power and their easy-to-use interface, and this makes them popular with creatives, students and those who have already bought into the Apple ecosystem. One of the great things about getting a MacBook if you’re already an Apple user, is you can expect a seamless experience across iOS, iPadOS and MacOS.

The MacBook range currently has five models to choose from, almost all of which are considered among the best laptops on the active market. Apple runs all their Macs on proprietary silicon chips, which integrate the CPU, GPU and unified memory (RAM) into one customisable chip. This makes all MacBooks fast, battery efficient and quiet, and who doesn’t want that in a laptop?

One thing to note is that you can’t upgrade the memory and storage on a Mac after purchase. Once you’ve found the right MacBook model, using our handy buying guide, it’s worth buying the biggest specification you can afford. More memory means a faster connection between the CPU, and more storage means you won’t get stuck with no space for apps, photos and documents.

Confused? Don’t worry. At Gear Nuke, we’re all about making tech simple to understand, so that you get the best bang for your buck. We don’t want you to end up with a rotten Apple (sorry).

Sun Haven Lost Toy Walkthrough

The Losty Toy is a quest that you can complete at any time as it starts when you find the trigger item. This is found outside the Sun Haven mine, you can pick up a Lost Toy that looks like a dinosaur. This gets added to your inventory with a description that clearly states that the toy should be returned to its owner.

The game doesn’t tell you the owner though, and the quest never gets tracked like a regular one so you have to find the owner on your own.

If you’d rather not deduce who it is yourself I can send you in the right direction. The toy belongs to Emma and can be returned to her in exchange for a reward. You can get XP, coins, or tokens as your reward upon returning the lost toy.

Sun Haven Golden Pomegranate

The first step to finding a Golden Pomegranate is to level up the correct skill. It requires you to get the Scavenger Hunt skill to its maximum level of 3. At this point, you’ll have the best chance of finding a spawned Golden Pomegranate. You can get them from Level 1 but it is less likely you’ll find one so Level 3 is recommended.

There are 24 set spots for the pomegranate to spawn in, at level 3 you’ll have three of them spawn in. Once you find one, the other two will disappear until the next day. As you can see, getting one of these is not an easy ask.

The 24 locations are as follows:

  • Outside Jun’s house at the tree
  • Behind Kitty’s house and beside the bridge
  • Outside the farm and beside the purple guy bathing
  • 3x West Leafy Forest
  • Under the clock bridge next to the hospital
  • Beside the hospital entrance
  • In Catherine’s Garden
  • Outside the library to the right of the fountain
  • At the dragon fountain
  • To the left of the Town Hall entrance
  • 2x East Forest (one where the ground remains snowy, another where it’s an autumn brown)

There are some other ways to get a Golden Pomegranate like the Withergate Spinning Wheel, from Golden Trees produced by golden tree seeds. There is also one other way.

Pigs. Pigs in your barn can produce this item as a “golden product” after unlocking the Golden Heart skill. You can have a maximum of 17 pigs, assuming you want no other animals, which would guarantee you at least 1 or 2 Golden Pomegranates a day.

There’s more than one way to get some Golden Pomegranate but the scavenging method is your most likely route to success, unless you want to stock your entire farm up with just pigs…

Song of the Prairie Romance Walkthrough

Bachelors & Bachelorettes

There’s an extensive list of characters who are open to dating:

  • Du
  • Huan
  • Jin
  • Kroc
  • Linde (only dates women)
  • Poer
  • Rhode
  • Abby
  • Becky
  • Freya
  • Jiyue
  • Liv
  • Lori
  • Pauline
  • Sakona
  • Wallis

All of these characters except Linde will date you no matter what your character’s chosen gender is so there’s no limits based on what your MC pick is.

Romancing

To even get a date you’ll first have to build up your relationship with your chosen lover. The game has six different stages for relationships stretching from stranger to Best Friend/Lover. You can fill this by doing the usual stuff, interacting with characters, giving them gifts, completing missions, all of this will fill up your Friendship Points.

Once you’ve reached the friend stage, which requires 1500 FP you can ask the character on a date. They’ll accept presuming the next day isn’t an event day and you’ll be told to meet at the Goddess Statue at 10, if you arrive at 10 they usually spawn in by 10:30 and your date commences.

You get to choose where to go for a date which is important as each character has their own favoured date spots. Each spot has 5 activities available to you that can earn FP. After 3 activities you can use a prompt to end the date.

You can end the date any time by walking out but waiting until you’ve done 3 activities will five you post-date prompts like an offer to go out to eat which is another thing that can boost your FP.

Love

After successfully dating someone it’s time to take things to the next level, once you reach Best Friend status you’ll be sent a letter teaching you how to craft Lover’s Gaze. Lover’s Gaze is a gifted item that confesses your feelings to another character.

If you’re advanced enough in their story and have a good enough friendship level they will accept and you’ll become lovers instead of Best Friends.

Sword of Convallaria Reroll Walkthrough

How to Reroll

The reroll system for Sword of Convallaria only works on the mobile version so they’ll have to be done there and then bind to PC. The process is likely to be familiar to regular gacha players.

You can make guest accounts to play a new file, with each new account finish the tutorial and collect as many rewards and currency as possible. Then go through the freebies and guaranteed banners that you get with a fresh account and your opening currency.

If you don’t like the outcome of the pulls, start a new game on a fresh guest account and delete the previous one before repeating the steps until you get a pull that you like.

This isn’t too bad as the tutorial is short although you may get tired of replaying some parts of the level as you attempt to get the best roll. Once you’re happy with the pull then bind that account and play it as your main.

Who to Reroll For

There are a few specific units that are desirable and will make your account competitive for the long-term. If you can then get all three but even getting any two of Beryl, Gloria, and Inana will have you set up for success.
