The only certain thing in Backpack Battles is the class you start with. Everything other than that changes from one game to another. When going for a build, you can only work with what is offered to you, but there are still ways in which you can optimize your build.

In this guide, we will look at the best Ranger builds that you can go for in Backpack Battles. Despite the items you get being random, you can still consistently make a build that lets you win more battles.

Ranger Build Guide

starting items as the ranger

If you go for the Ranger as your starting class, you will start with the Wooden Sword and a Lucky Clove. The Ranger as a class is based around critical hits and extra damage from these hits.

With luck being such a major part of the class, a lot of your builds will be luck-based. There are certain items that you can only get when playing as a Ranger. They are:

  • Acorn Collar
  • Bow and Arrow
  • Carrot
  • Lucky Clover
  • Carrot Goober

No matter which class you play with in Backpack Battles, your build will evolve and change a lot throughout the run.

Early-Game Items

example early game backpack

Early on in the game, you want to place a lot of your priority on getting backpack space and food items. Most builds in this game will have a similar early game pattern, as food items give you good sustain during battles and backpack space will let you have bigger stronger items in your backpack.

The luck factor in the Ranger class will give you a critical strike chance on all your weapons. You will get offered plenty of cloves too, getting them will increase your overall critical chance.

Crafting Items

item recipe for the hero sword

As you progress through your run, you will get certain items that can be combined together. There are basic recipes in this game like the Hero Sword, that all classes can craft. The game also has class-specific items. For the Ranger, the unique items are:

  • Critwood Staff
  • Lucky Piggy
  • Fortuna’s Grace
  • Tusk Piercer
  • Rainbow Goobert Megasludge Alphapuddle

Items that you craft will gain special bonuses and take up less space in your backpack. Combining items is an important way in which you can maximize your backpack space and get much stronger.

End-Game Builds

Your builds near the end of the run will start straying towards specific subclasses. This is important because based on the weapons and items you are offered, your build can look very different.

example late game build

So if you look at the build above, it shows what a Lifebinder build looks like when you start as a Ranger. Most late-game builds will need to focus on having weapons that are buffed or combined with other items to make them stronger.

Other than that, you also need to have plenty of other utility items that complement your build. You want to maximize damage, but alongside that, you also need to survive the opponent’s damage.

The most important thing in Backpack Battles is getting familiar with the various items in the game. Once you get the hang of that, you can start getting creative with your Ranger builds and build whatever you like.

Backpack Battles is as addictive as it is tough, but battles being a race against time make it so that you really want to have the best build for max damage possible.

Fatigue and your opponents can’t kill you if the battles end as soon as they start due to your raw damage, after all!

In this guide, we’ll look at what might be the best damage build currently available in Backpack Battles.

Best Build for Max Damage

Backpack Battles: Best Build for Max Damage

NOTE: Backpack Battles is an Early Access game, so balance is prone to change with patches. As such, we can only guarantee this build will work on the Early Access Launch Version: 0.84.

Your max damage build will rely on three main aspects: the Ranger class, the Holy Spear, and the Critwood Staff.

The only thing you can truly guarantee is the Ranger class. Getting the Holy Spear and Critwood Staff will rely purely on luck.

You’ll need the right items to randomly pop up in the shop. That’s just how Backpack Battles works…

You’ll also need to use Item Recipes to make both items, as they aren’t regular items.

Critwood Staff recipe as an example

To combine items together using Item Recipes, just place them next to each other and complete one battle. You’ll notice that the items will combine thanks to a glowing line between them.

To make both of these powerful weapons, combine the following items:

  • Holy Spear – Spear + Glowing Crown
  • Critwood Staff – Magic Staff + Acorn Collar
Holy Spear item recipe

Once you’ve got them, place the Holy Spear so that it has as many empty slots or Holy items in front of it as possible.

Holy Spear setup

The Holy Spear will destroy 6 Block and cleanse 1 Debuff for every empty slot or Holy item! This can effectively keep you safe while shredding the enemy’s defenses, ensuring you deal max damage.

Critwood Staff placed

For the Critwood Staff itself, there are no special requirements needed. Just place it wherever you want in your backpack and you’re good to go.

Do note, you’ll also need high Mana Regeneration to keep both items active.

Box of Riches, contains Gemstones

Lastly, make sure to get Gemstones and slot them into both of these weapons to further buff their effects.

Keep all of that in mind and you’ve got a build that’ll easily deal the max damage possible!

Fantasy extraction game Dungeonborne was February's most played Steam Next Fest demo

February's Steam Next Fest demo bonanza officially concluded on Monday, and Valve have now revealed the 50 most played games you all tucked into across the week-long event. Ordered by the number of unique players that spent time with them during Next Fest proper (meaning all those early demo plays from earlier in the month haven't been counted), the most popular game of the lot was one that was only formally announced right at the end of January. So congratulations Dungeonborne - your blend of PvPvE dungeon crawling and fantasy skelly monsters clearly struck a chord with this year's Next Festers.
