Almost a decade after it set crowdfunding records on Kickstarter, and five years after its release, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s developers have announced the final free update for the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night successor.
If, like me, you haven't been paying that much attention to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night since the buzz around its release started to fade, you might be surprised to see developer ArtPlay has just shared a brand-new post-launch roadmap - providing a date for the game's final two Kickstarter stretch goals - some five years after leaving early access.
It's now been a little under nine years since Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night smashed its Kickstarter target, securing $5.5m in funding, and it turns out ArtPlay is still ticking off its promised campaign stretch goals. The end is in sight, however; Bloodstained's 1.5 update - which Artplay is calling the "final update to the game" - launches on 9th May (the Switch version arrives a little later on 16th May) and adds the final two stretch goals promised to backers in all the way back in 2015: Chaos and VS. modes, which were, at one point, set to arrive in 2020.
Chaos Mode, as per ArtPlay's announcement, supports solo and co-op play (online and local) and sees players battling through a series of randomised rooms to defeat demons and bosses. VS Mode, meanwhile, is a "special PVP mode" that pits two players against waves of demons. Souls earned by defeating enemies can be used to purchase attacks that will negatively affect a player's human opponent, with victory going to the player that survives the longest.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the best metroidvania games in years, standing proudly alongside Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest as a highlight of the genre originated by Samus Aran and Simon Belmont. The game has received a huge amount of post-launch support since its original release, and is set to gain even more next week in its 1.5 update, releasing May 9 on PC.
The final Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night update will come to consoles and PCs in May 2024, adding Chaos and VS modes and both paid and free cosmetic costumes for Miriam. While the Switch gets it on May 16, 2024, every other platform gets the update on May 9, 2024.
The free additions to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night involve the Chaos and VS modes and a free cosmetic pack. The two modes were originally the last Kickstarter stretch goals. Chaos is a randomized multiplayer mode where people work together locally or online to survive as long as possible. Versus is a competitive online or local mode that involves a split screen and defeating waves of monsters to buy upgrades, mess with your opponent, and make it easier for you to be the last one standing. As for the free Miriam costume in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, that cosmetic pack is based on Shantae. It’s a nod to WayForward’s involvement with the game.
There will be three paid cosmetics launched alongside 1.5. Their names weren’t revealed in the update, but official art offered a peek at them. Each Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night upcoming Cosmetic Pack includes a costume and equipment for Miriam. There is also a stat bar for each one if you put it all on at once.
While this is the final Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night update, there will be one last piece of DLC. Classic Mode II: Dominique’s Curse is in development. That features an original story and map.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is available for the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC, and the final update. comes to most platforms on May 9, 2024 and the Switch on May 16, 2024. The physical PC release will follow the release of this final update.
