Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 is done and dusted for another year, but it's certainly kicked off this year's Gamescom with a bang - and we've got all the news, trailers and announcements right here in one handy summary. Whether you missed the show itself or just want a handy reminder of everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live this year, read on below.

Of course, alongside the main show, this year's ONL also had a 30-minute pre-show that was stuffed with announcements as well, which we'll quickly run through here before getting into the detail of the main show announcements below. Here, we got new trailers for Dave the Diver's latest crossovers, spooky co-op adventure Begone Beast and construction sim Roadcraft, alongside Italian Soulslike Enotria: The Last Song, Cairn (that shouty, but lovely looking climbing game from Summer Game Fest), life sim Inzoi from PUBG publishers Krafton, as well as a Terry showcase for Street Fighter 6.

There were also new game announcements in the pre-show in the form of Sniper Elite Resistance (coming 2025), the Donkey Kong-esque platformer Nikoderiko: The Magical World (with music from David Wise, no less), "first person farming horror allegory" We Harvest Shadows, the also quite spooky-looking Aila, a tease for the sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet (aptly named Revenge of the Savage Planet), action RPG Tribe Nine from the creators of Danganronpa, and the Lashana Lynch-led Directive 8020: A Dark Pictures Game.

By the time you read these words, Peter Molyneux will have taken to the Opening Night Live stage at Gamescom and formally announced his new project to the world. Masters of Albion marks Molyneux's return to the genre he is widely credited with creating. It ditches his studio 22cans' previous focus on mobile development to instead target consoles as well as PC. And it's being made with help from several of Molyneux's old colleagues at his previous studios - Lionhead, Bullfrog - whose design CVs, like Molyneux's own, include a litany of 90s and 2000s classics.

On paper, all of this should inspire a positive reception. But, sitting opposite Molyneux a week before today's announcement, in the quiet boardroom of his small Guildford development studio, the veteran video game designer is clearly nervous. Those 90s and 2000s hits are now a long time ago, and much, of course, has changed. It's been 12 years since 22cans was founded and Molyneux's Curiosity cube caught the headlines, for good and bad, and the subsequent decade has not gone smoothly - crowdfunding concerns with Godus, continued accusations of broken promises, a fractured relationship with the media, and, most recently, an odd foray chasing the NFT fad with a blockchain game unfortunately titled Legacy.

Molyneux, now 65, is visibly older, softly-spoken. Last year, on social media, he described his mental health as "fragile". As we sit down, he asks if I mind whether he vapes as we talk - a habit he tells me he's picked up due to stress. He's not been sleeping well, he says, due to the anxiety of talking to the press once again. At times, when we discuss what this new project means to him - what it potentially could still mean for the latter stages of his career - his voice slows, emotion rising. But, at others, when he's discussing game mechanics, or keen to tell me more than he's strictly allowed, his old enthusiasm shines through, at one point swinging back and forth like a child on his chair.

Gamescom Opening Night Live just pulled the rabbit out of the hat with the return of gaming legend Peter Molyneux. Younger readers not have a clue who he is, but suffice to say he was one the rockstar developers in the 16 bit days and created the God game genre with Populous,

He then went of to make the likes of Black and White and Fable before deciding to make a mobile game, Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube? The “game” involved everyone in the world tapping away at a cube to remove layers, with the person who made the final tap winning a prize. It was an absolute mess, so he then went to make a mobile god game, Godus, which also ended up as a mess. Thankfully he seems to have realised he made some mistakes and opened his interview saying “After messing around on mobile – what the hell was I doing?!?”

So then, on to his new god game, Master of Albion which is coming to PC. Created by a team of 20 veterans it allows your create and customise almost everything, from buildings to weapons. During the day the aim is to craft and build your town, but by night you have to defend it from evil creatures. The key feature here is that you can swap from God mode to third person and take control of a character and go and smash some skulls in yourself.

“The story of Albion is one of power and consequence, a rich and deep narrative set in a world full of quests and moral choices. Navigate your way through intrigue and plot – kings come and go, lords shake you by the hand then stab you in the back, and the people work like dogs and are treated no better.”

“Gifted god like, ancient powers, you face an enemy the likes of which have not been seen in hundreds of years. Magic is returning to the hills and halls of Albion, threatening to tear down the the very foundations of society. Unravel the mystery of the mages, defeat the enemy that lurks in the night and conquer a sorcery that could kill us all.”

You can Wishlist the game on Steam right now.

In it, you can see how you can micromanage the town of Oakridge. Everything from the food people eat, to their economic bracket, to their weapon of choice is something you can choose. At night, the horrors of Albion will attack, meaning that you have to fight them off. You’re able to take direct control of villagers as well. When the going gets tough, you can always possess a stronger creature.

Though this is not a new Black & White, it has some similarities with that game. Peter Molyneux, who worked on Masters of Albion, also designed that game during his time at Lionhead Studios. As for the Albion setting for the game, it’s the same world that Fable took place in. Fable was also a game that Peter Molyneux worked on, though that was an action RPG rather than a sandbox.

Masters of Albion will come out on the Windows PC and you can now wishlist it on Steam.

Peter Molyneux Insists His New Game Isn’t Set in the World of Fable, Despite Being Called Masters of Albion | gamescom 2024

"Albion is like saying if you set a game in America…"

Peter Molyneux is back, this time with a new god game called Masters of Albion that he’s talking up at gamescom 2024. Sound familiar? Anyone who’s played Fable, one of the many games from Molyneux’s much-loved back catalog, will know Albion well.

Albion is the setting for the Fable series, originally …

Peter Molyneux reveals Masters of Albion, a new town management strategy title that makes some big promises

20. Srpen 2024 v 22:06

sandwich in masters of albion

Peter Molyneux, perhaps best known for his work on Fable, Black & White, Dungeon Keeper, and Godus, stepped back into the spotlight during Gamescom 2024's Opening Night Live to reveal his studio's new game, Masters of Albion.

The game is an homage to everything Molyneux has ever worked on. With the quirky fantasy-meets-history feel of the Fable series crossed with the top-down view and god-like powers bestowed on players from the Dungeon Keeper games. In it, you're tasked with building up a town during the day, deciding everything from where the citizens work and live, to exactly what kind of sandwich they eat. At night, though, you must protect the town from the horrors of Albion, and that's where things get interesting.

Control it all from the top to the bottom

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XN49WCND3M

As you can see in the very first trailer for Masters of Albion, it's very much a strategy simulation game for the most part. The day is spent moving people around to where you think they'll fit best in the town, creating food, weapons, armor, and allegedly literally anything you want. That level of control could keep you busy for endless hours, but night will interfere.

At night, all sorts of monsters emerge from the wilderness of Albion to attack your town. This is when your hero steps up to defend the buildings and people you've been working hard with all day. The trailer shows how you'll be able to directly control this hero and any NPC you desire, so you can fight for your town and presumably become a citizen to more efficiently aid it in other ways.

The level of depth Molyneux promises in Master of Albion is pretty impressive. He says you'll even be able to define the types of food everyone eats on a daily basis and make silly weapons such as bread swords if that's what you want to spend your time doing.

However, Molyneux has made big promises before with games like Godus and then failed to follow through on them. He says he's got many of the old crew who worked with him on games such as Dungeon Keeper back in the day together for 22cans on this project. This should instill confidence in Masters of Albion, but I think it's healthy to take everything shown here with a big pinch of salt until we've seen some more gameplay further down the line.
