Super Yooka-Laylee Kart fulfils the fourth game karting spin-off prophecy (on a technicality)

Playtonic has announced the next and “fourth” game in the Yooka-Laylee series: Super Yooka-Laylee Kart! It’s in development for PC with beta tests coming soon.

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart brings back the chameleon and bat pairing, but this time, they’re hopping onto karts for a fresh take on retro gaming. This title really channels the vibe of Super Mario Kart for the Game Boy Advance, aiming to be a pixel perfect rendition of classic kart racing.

It aims to reward precision arcade racing with weapons, advanced techniques and a unique Rage system that lets you dish damage back to rivals who attack you and pass you, unleashing a revenge ability that can change the race right at the end. A coin system also runs throughout, boosting your top speed as you collect them in race, but then being able to spend them on perks between events to add risk and strategy.

The game will feature a proper solo campaign, online multiplayer and local 8-player split-screen – yes, eight! – and there’s a great deal of multiplayer customisation. Players can make their own races with custom rules and modifiers, such as Invisible Racing, Extreme Boost, Mini-Kart Madness and more.

Currently in development for PC, Playtonic will be hosting beta tests soon, so if this tickles your fancy, you should head to Steam to follow and wishlist the game. We imagine it will rev onto all the major platforms when it’s good and ready.

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart follows in the fine 90s tradition of having a karting game to follow up on a platforming franchise, often being the fourth game in the series – Yooka-Laylee technically counts if you include the original game, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and the remake, and now SYLK. With Playtonic having been founded by former Rare staff, there’s obviously a rich vein of experience with this, having created the beloved Diddy Kong Racing back in 1996.
