A huge anime action game is stripping out its gacha loot boxes to be reborn as a full-fledged MMORPG, and I can't wait

Do you ever wonder what happened to Tower of Fantasy? The free-to-play shared-world anime game that I fully expected to make it onto our list of the best MMOs? The one that got some good buzz on Twitch back in 2022 as a potential Genshin Impact killer? Then you might be surprised, elated even, to hear that it's getting yet another big rework in just a few days to bring it closer to the original expectation of it being a shared-world anime adventure MMORPG, while keeping it separate from the regular version that I can only assume still has some staunch defenders.

MMO-lite Tower of Fantasy yeets gacha elements for a fresh start ‘revolution’ tomorrow

For those who consider gacha elements in MMOs and online games an immediate deal-breaker, Tower of Fantasy has something to say: It’s going to deliver the gacha-free experience that players have wanted since the sci-fi RPG’s beginning. As we’ve been covering, a new version of the game called Warp Server is rolling out to fans […]

Tower of Fantasy is quitting the gacha life as it, sort of, transitions into a regular MMO

Remember Tower of Fantasy? It was one of those Genshin Impact-ish gacha games, with its particular twist, so to speak, being that it's sort of an MMO. I say sort of, because it's described as a shared open world, meaning you can see other players, and there are some MMO elements, but its monetisations are much more gacha like. Or, well, they are until tomorrow, November 25th, as in quite a big move developer Hotta Studio is stripping Tower of Fantasy of all of its gacha elements.

Tower of Fantasy’s Upcoming Warp Server Removes the Gacha System to Deliver a Purer MMO Experience

Tower of Fantasy used to be popular when it was released back in 2022. In fact, this free-to-play anime game got big at that time that it was even dubbed as a potential Genshin Impact killer.

However, it didn’t take long for the game to fall off, as most of its playerbase got tired quickly due to some of its systems. Even with the release of update 2.0 a few months later, it seems that the damage was already done.

It was then followed by updates after updates, until eventually, the hype for Tower of Fantasy died down as there were simply better alternatives at that time.

Three years later, developer Hotta Studio is aiming to make a comeback for Tower of Fantasy by introducing a major rework of its systems.

Specifically, they’re doing away with the gacha system, among others, in a server they called the “Warp Server.”

The aim of this server is simple: there’ll be no need to pull for characters and weapons anymore. Instead, you’ll have to grind for them as you would in any traditional MMO.

A Gacha-Free System and a Major Overhaul of Tower of Fantasy’s Systems

Hotta Studio has announced the upcoming changes via Tower of Fantasy’s official account on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the post, the changes are made to “meet the expectations of Authorizers for MMO gameplay, the Warp Server, featuring a brand-new system and progression mechanics.”

So what are the changes exactly?

For starters, the Warp Server will get rid of the gacha-based system that the game came with when it released back in 2022.

This means you’ll no longer have to pull characters and weapons. Instead, players can earn them via daily play. No more relying on a lot of RNG to obtain the things you want, as you can instead spend hours grinding them to get them.

Another change seems to be tier rarities with equipment as well as level requirements, which make them closer to the traditional MMO experience. And since there are no stamina requirements anymore, you’ll be able to grind as much as you want.

There are also things like GvE crew events, as well as a Crew Base where you can interact and trade with other players.

You can find a lot more of this stuff in their Q&A video below:

From what the developers said, it will be a “major leap towards the future of the game.” Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of details going on about it.

But since it’s slated to release on November 25th, we don’t have to wait for long to find out.
