Tencent wins Gamescom's 2024 sustainability award

Tencent has secured Gamescom's 2024 sustainability award.

Tencent Americas president Brent Irvin accepted the award from Playing for the Planet at Gamescom's Opening Night Live.

The award celebrates organisations that demonstrate public commitments to sustainable values, as well as share their approaches to carbon accounting and emissions reductions.

Gamescom scraps Best Nintendo Game Award due to "too few submissions"

Gamescom has scrapped its Best Nintendo Game Award due to a lack of nominees.

Gamescom's award committee confirmed it had received "too few submissions" for the award category to go ahead this year.

This is the first time since the Gamescom awards were split into platform-specific categories back in 2011 that there will be no award for Best Nintendo Switch game.

What does Gamescom look like in a post-E3 world?

Gamescom is more than just a week in Cologne.

The world's biggest games show has expanded dramatically in recent years with the launch of satellite events in other markets; first with Gamescom Asia in Singapore, which debuted in 2021, and this year heading to Brazil with the first Gamescom Latam.

The Cologne show already prided itself on being an international event, attracting companies and visitors from all over the world and representing different nations with the country pavilions found in the business halls. But co-organiser Felix Falk, also managing director of German games trade association Game, says the physical expansion into other territories demonstrates the global role Gamescom aims to play in the games industry.

Devcom Developer Conference is offering 200 sessions from over 250 speakers when the conference kicks off on August 19 at the new Confex Conference Center at the Koelmesse.

Confirmed speakers include Larian Studios' cinematic director, Jason Latino, Sony Santa Monica's game director Mihir Sheth, and Stéphane Roy, Former Vice President & Studio Head at WB Games Montreal.

Other panels include a discussion about creating complex romances in games with Adrienne Law (Larian Studios), Helen Hindpere (Disco Elysium), Meghna Jayanth (Sable, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Sunless Sea, Boyfriend Dungeon, This War of Mine), hosted by Sarah Makdad (A Plague Tale: Innocence, World War Z, What the Golf?).
