Samsung's next flagship foldable phone is now one step closer to launch. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has picked up a few certifications over the last few weeks from regulatory authorities around the world, and it has now received blessings from the USA's FCC as well.

According to the FCC certification, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't have support for Wi-Fi 7. That is a little surprising as the Galaxy S24 Ultra is certified for Wi-Fi 7, and Samsung usually keeps its Galaxy S Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold smartphones on an equal footing when it comes to connectivity features. The Galaxy Z Flip 6's FCC certification doesn't mention Wi-Fi 7 support either.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 connectivity feature set not as high-end as expected

We have known for some time that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will not be a substantial upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but we didn't expect it to lack features like Wi-Fi 7 that are built into the Snapdragon chip that will power the phone.

Samsung's decision to keep the list of upgrades on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 limited may have something to do with its plans to launch an Ultra variant with higher-end specs. There's also a Fold 6 Slim that's supposedly larger, thinner, and costs around the same as the standard Fold 6, though we're assuming that model will also be unable to connect to Wi-Fi 7 networks.

Except Wi-Fi 7, the connectivity feature set on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 appears to match that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It will feature 5G (sub6 and mmWave), Ultra-wideband (UWB), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.3 support.

Samsung will officially announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 at its Unpacked event in Paris on July 10. Samsung will also unveil new smartwatches, its first smart ring, and new wireless earbuds at the same venue.

As one of the leading companies in South Korea and the world, you can imagine why investors from across the globe like to purchase shares in Samsung Electronics. It provides them with an opportunity to share in the success, as this Samsung company is the conglomerate's cash cow, making everything from mobile devices to high-bandwidth memory.

However, recent business headwinds seem to have spooked invested based out of South Korea, who have now begun to dump shares of Samsung Electronics worth billions of dollars. This trend is expected to continue in the absence of buyers willing to pick up the stock at current prices.

Over $1.7 billion worth of Samsung Electronics stock sold this month

Foreign investors were the biggest buyers of Samsung Electronics stock between November 2023 and May 2024, scooping up $8.72 billion worth of shares. The average purchase price is estimated to be 75,942 won or $54.99. Samsung Electronics stock is down nearly 8% year-to-date, ending at 73,500 or $53.22 at end of business today.

The stock has traded below that average purchase price for a few weeks now. Foreigners have been closing their positions, selling 2.37 trillion won or $1.7 billion worth of Samsung Electronics shares since May 9. They dominated the selling side in today's trading session as well. With fewer buyers in the market at current prices, this may lead to a further decline in share price, prompting more foreign investors to close their positions.

There are a few factors behind the lagging share price. From concerns about Samsung falling behind SK Hynix in the high-bandwidth memory race to potentially failing NVIDIA's quality tests for HBM3E memory.

There's also the risk of the first-ever strike at Samsung Electronics by the National Samsung Electronics Union, with 90% of the union's members belonging to the semiconductor division. Since semiconductor manufacturing is a very lengthy and precise process, even the most minor disruptions could cause a snowball effect that leads to product issues.

It's the combination of this risk and the negative sentiment that's driving down Samsung's stock price, even as local and foreign analysts maintain a higher price target for the stock at 105,000 won or $76, since the fundamentals of Samsung Electronics' business are still rock solid.

Google is working on improving and ironing out Android 15 for a release later this year. As usual, the new OS version introduces a handful of new features, some of which are not entirely original. Instant Hotspot is one such addition to Android 15, and fresh reports say it won't be coming to Samsung Galaxy devices.

First things first, what is Android's new Instant Hotspot feature? In short, it's a neat little tool that lets an Android tablet or Chromebook instantly connect to a phone's hotspot network.

f you use an Android tablet or a Chromebook without Wi-Fi in the vicinity of your phone, you'll see a pop-up asking you whether you want to use your phone's hotspot network, and the process is seamless.

It sounds convenient as much as it sounds familiar to Galaxy device users. And herein lies the apparent reason why Instant Hotspot isn't coming to One UI, Google says (via Android Authority).

Samsung's One UI already has something called Auto Hotspot

If it sounds like you've already encountered something like Google's Instant Hotspot on your Galaxy device, you probably have. Samsung's One UI boasts a feature called Auto Hotspot, which fulfills the same function as Instant Hotspot.

The difference is that Google's Instant Hotspot works with any Android tablet and Chromebook, whereas Samsung's Auto Hotspot only works with Galaxy devices, as long as they share a Samsung account or family group.

Story continues after the video…

On the bright side, Galaxy device users have had Auto Hotspot for some time, and the fact that they won't gain access to Google's version through Android 15 won't make much of a difference to their experience.

As long as you use Samsung Galaxy devices exclusively, you won't miss Instant Hotspot whatsoever. However, if you were hoping to utilize the Auto Hotspot feature in One UI with other Android tablet brands or a Chromebook, you might feel left out once Android 15 lands.

Editor's Note: Samsung might have had to choose between keeping its in-house Auto Hotspot One UI feature — which it developed before Google created Instant Hotspot — or ditching a feature Galaxy device users already have in favor of Google's alternative.

It's understandable why Samsung might not be keen on abandoning Auto Hotspot and why it might not want to overcomplicate the user experience by offering both hotspot features at the same time.

However, seeing how Google's Nearby Share and Samsung's Quick Share have merged, maybe Samsung's Auto Hotspot will eventually merge with Google's Instant Hotspot.

Samsung has put the Galaxy A12 on a biannual security update schedule, which means that it offers two security updates to the smartphone every year. Now, the company is rolling out the first of the two software updates to the Galaxy A12 for this year. It brings the May 2024 security patch to the phone, which fixes 45 security issues.

So far, Samsung has made the May 2024 security patch only for the carrier-locked variant of the Galaxy A12 for the United States. However, we are sure that Samsung will expand the new software update to other variants of the smartphone and in other regions very soon. The new firmware has version A125USQS8CXE6.

The story continues after the video…

If you live in the United States but your carrier-locked Galaxy A12 hasn’t notified you about the new software update, you will have to check for it manually. You can do that by going to Settings » Software update » Download and install. The new firmware is also available in our database for you to download and install manually.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung will offer security updates to the Galaxy A12 for only one more year (till the end of 2025). After that, your smartphone will be more prone to security attacks and at that point, it is a good idea to get a new phone. If you are looking for an affordable one, you can’t go wrong with the Galaxy A35.

Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been trying to catch up to Samsung's lead in the foldable segment for a few years now. They've been able to close the gap but the progress still remains limited, largely due to the problems with market access that they face in North America, particularly the United States.

Those manufacturers are now taking the fight to Samsung in other lucrative markets where they don't have such issues. Vivo's already come out with its Galaxy Z Fold 6 rival, dubbed the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, and it appears the company will be assembling the device locally in India to enhance competitiveness.

Vivo wants to improve its competitive in India's foldable market

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro was first unveiled in China back in March this year. It features a 6.53-inch OLED cover display and an 8.03-inch internal foldable panel. It even has an IPX8 water resistance rating, matching one of the key selling points of the Galaxy Z Fold series.

You'll find Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset under the hood with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. It has a whole host of other top-notch features as well, making the device deserving of its ~$1,385 price tag, lower than the Galaxy Z Fold's $1,799 starting price.

Vivo has its sights set on the premium segment in India. The company is going to assemble the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro in India, using some local materials in the supply chain as well, to better compete against Samsung in the rapidly growing foldable smartphone segment. The devices will be assembled at Vivo's new 170-acre factory in Noida.

No word as yet on pricing but the mid-June launch window makes it clear that Vivo wants to get its product out in the market before Samsung releases the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which won't happen until the end of July at the very least, as the Unpacked event takes place on July 10.
