Samsung has released an update to the Samsung Health Monitor app in India, which brings the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature to the Galaxy Watch 4 (and probably all newer Galaxy Watches). This brings one more health-related feature to Galaxy Watch 4 users in the country.

Samsung has released a new update (version 1.3.4.004) to the Samsung Health Monitor app with a download size of 58.54MB (via Yash Agarwal). It brought the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature to the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Once the Samsung Health Monitor app's newest version is installed on your Galaxy smartphone, you can open the app to find a new pop-up window that notifies you about the IHRN feature.

This new feature is only available for Wear OS-based Galaxy Watches. Since the Samsung Health Monitor app is compatible with all Wear OS-based Galaxy Watches, the new feature might be available to the Galaxy Watch 5 series, Galaxy Watch 6 series, Galaxy Watch 7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Earlier this year, Samsung released the Samsung Health Monitor app in India to bring blood pressure and ECG features to Galaxy Watches in the country.

How to activate Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on Galaxy Watches?

To activate the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on your Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch, follow the steps listed below.

1. Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy phone and navigate to the ECG tab.
2. Click the three-dot icon on the top-right corner of the screen and then tap on Settings.
3. Tap on Notifications and then enable the Irregular Heart Rhythm toggle.

You will now receive notifications when your Galaxy Watch detects an irregular heart rhythm. A few times a day, when you are still, the Galaxy Watch will check your pulse. If it detects one hour of an irregular heart rhythm, it might indicate Atrial Fibrillation (A.Fib). If you get the IHRN notification, take your ECG reading immediately from the Samsung Health Monitor app and contact your doctor or an appropriate health clinic for consultation.

Samsung Galaxy phones have all sorts of clever systems in place to keep them operating within normal parameters. One such system monitors hardware temperatures and takes action to prevent overheating if ever necessary.

Interestingly, Google appears to be working on a new thermal management solution for Pixel phones called Adaptive Thermal. The latter is built into the Device Health Services app.

A recent APK teardown (via Android Authority) of said app reveals some interesting aspects about how Adaptive Thermal might function and why it could be superior to Samsung's anti-overheating measures.

Giving users a better fighting chance against overheating

The APK teardown reveals two key elements of Adaptive Thermal. One is that the system can take extensive actions to keep phone temperatures in check. The other is more of a teaching tool.

According to strings of code found in Google's app, the Adaptive Thermal system keeps a close eye on the Pixel phone's battery and triggers a “pre-emergency” alert when it reaches 49 degrees Celsius.

At this point, the system appears to be throttling the phone's performance to help it cool down. A notification informs the user that they “may experience slower performance” and that they should “try avoiding direct sunlight or close any battery-intensive apps.”

Adaptive thermal will continue to monitor temperatures every five minutes and take extra steps if the battery reaches 52 degrees. If those extra anti-overheating measures (which are yet unknown) fail and the battery reaches 55 degrees Celsius, Adaptive Thermal sends a warning and shuts the phone down after 30 seconds.

What Samsung could learn from this

This is more or less the standard nowadays. Phones can monitor temperatures, send warnings, and shut down the phone as an emergency measure in case of excessive overheating.

Samsung's Galaxy phones can also cleverly prevent overheating by dimming the screen, throttling performance, pausing charging, and possibly through other steps.

However, in addition to these automated steps, Google's Adaptive Thermal solution seems to offer users better information about what's going on and how they can help prevent overheating.

Unlike Samsung's overheating notification, which only has an “OK” button, Adaptive Thermal's notification seems to have a “See care steps” option. When selected, this option reveals tips on how users can cool down their phones. It suggests actions such as disabling 5G connectivity, avoiding direct sunlight, closing intensive apps like games, closing down the Camera app, and more.

Samsung offers overheating management tips for Galaxy phones on some of its support pages online, but you have to know where and how you can find them online. And in case you're wondering, Samsung's Tips app doesn't contain any useful information about heat management, either.

Google's Adaptive Thermal system will allow Pixel phone users to receive heat management tips straight from the overheating notification, which seems to be a much more sensible way of doing things.

There's no known release date for Adaptive Thermal but it might come with the next version of Android. Either way, it might be something Samsung may want to consider adding to its own Device Care suite in One UI.

In the past, through Good Lock modules like Thermal Guardian, Samsung gave users in select markets more control over a chip's throttling parameters. However, Thermal Guardian is more of an experimental tool designed for advanced users rather than a general teaching tool.

Files from Galaxy phones can be accessed more easily on Galaxy Book laptops via Windows 11

To access files stored on your Galaxy phone and tablet, you may not need to open the Phone Link app anymore. As spotted by X user @PhantomOnEarth, the File Manager app in Windows 11 will soon be able to display your Android phone as a shortcut. Once you click your phone on the app's sidebar, you can see all the files stored on your Galaxy device.

You can wirelessly import relevant files from your Galaxy phone or tablet to your Galaxy (or any other branded) laptop or PC. To enable this feature, you must enable the setting from the Settings app on a computer running Windows 11. To make this happen, the Phone Link app and the Cross Device Experience Host app act as a bridge between Android and Windows.

These two features were recently removed after Samsung updated that app. This information was revealed by the official forum moderator from Samsung, who is in charge of communicating changes related to the Good Lock suite of apps.

Using this feature, users could create custom shapes for the folder on the app drawer and the home screen and for the keys in the Samsung Keyboard app.

On the second day of Google I/O 2024, Google revealed that it will soon upgrade Android’s Photo Picker with a search option (via Android Authority). The new version (version 11.127.x) of Google Maps simplifies the bottom bar for all users. Instead of five tabs, it has just three: Explore, You, and Contribute. It still has all the functionality of the older version of the app, as the You tab includes features that were earlier listed in the Go, Saved, and Updates tabs.

In the You tab, there is no search bar. Notifications and Business Messages can be accessed from the top right corner of the screen. The Go section from the old version of the app is now named Saved Trips and resides in the You tab.

Google Maps still doesn't use the Material You design, and Google might be too cautious. The app is used by billions of users worldwide, and a sudden design change could confuse many users. Google announced this new design in March and has now started rolling it out to some users worldwide.

Earlier this year, Google merged Android's Nearby Share feature with Samsung's Quick Share. This new wireless file-sharing system is a lot faster than the previous one, and it is about to get even better, as reported by Android Authority with the help of developer Assemble Debug.

Quick Share can share files even faster via QR codes

Right now, Quick Share works by finding nearby compatible devices through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. However, finding devices can sometimes take a lot of time, particularly when the phones aren't connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Google has developed a way to make connections faster, and that's through QR codes.

The latest beta version of Google Play Services (v24.20.13) introduces QR codes that users can scan to initiate an instant connection for sharing files wirelessly via Quick Share. When sharing files via Quick Share, the user can click the ‘Share With QR Code' option, which generates a QR code. The receiver can then scan the QR code, after which both devices will initiate a connection for file transfer.

This new feature isn't live on Android smartphones and tablets but is expected to be released soon. The feature may go live on devices running Android 15 in the future.

Meta has announced that it will soon be adding two new features to WhatsApp, the ability to create events in groups and the ability to reply to messages in Community’s Announcements Groups. Let’s take a detailed look at them.

Starting with the first feature, WhatsApp will soon let you create an event in a group, such as a birthday or a get-together. You can add a date and a time to this event. Once you create an event, the app will send it as a message to the group and will also add it to the group’s information page. That’s not all though. People will be able to respond to the event, allowing them to let others in the group know if they are attending the event or not, or share their thoughts about the event. The new feature makes it easier to plan an event with members in a group.

Coming to the second feature, WhatsApp will soon let everyone in an Announcement Group reply to messages in it. Currently, only admins can send messages there, and non-admin members can only read messages in them. The upcoming feature will make Announcement Groups more conversational, and therefore, more useful. What’s even better is that when people reply to a message in it, the app will keep those messages minimized and not notify you about them to make sure that you’re not constantly disturbed by  every message.

Meta says “Events are coming to groups that belong to a Community first, and will roll out to all groups over the coming months.” Unfortunately, the company didn’t say when it will roll out the ability to reply to messages in Announcement Groups.

Google Drive is among the best cloud storage solutions for a reason. It is extremely reliable, and Google keeps adding new features to the app on all the popular platforms. In a recent move, Google added new filters to the Google Drive app on Android. However, this feature was released a month after it was released to the iOS version of the app.

Google Drive gets new filters to find files quicker

Google has released a new update to the Google Drive app for Android, offering users a more straightforward and intuitive way to search for files. Filter categories are located just below the search bar at the top of the screen. You can filter files by File Type, Owners, and Last Modified. This will make finding files more accessible than ever. You can choose even more filters on the search results page to narrow down the file you want to see.

This updated version of Google Drive should be available to all Google Workspace users in the coming days. Some people might have received this new version already. You can search for the update on the Google Play Store by navigating to the My Apps section of the app and then hitting the Update button.

Google has added many new features to Google Drive over the past few years. Last year, it significantly improved Google Drive on foldable phones and tablets through a multi-column UI and a navigation rail on the left side of the screen. Updates usually bring new features and performance improvements. However, sometimes updates also bring performance and reliability issues. One such issue could come to YouTube on older or affordable Galaxy phones and tablets.

Older and lower-end Galaxy phones could have performance issues on YouTube with AV1 decoding

Google’s Arif Dikici (Android Video and Image Codecs Team) revealed that Android will now use the AV1 decoder known as ‘libdav1d’ for YouTube. This codec was created by the team behind the popular VLC player. All devices running Android 12 or newer have software support for the codec once they have received the March 2024 Google Play System Update.

While this update will bring the improved AV1 codec that makes videos look good at lower bitrates (or slower internet connections), not every phone has native hardware support for the AV1 codec. Most mid-range and high-end phones that don’t support AV1 hardware decoding use the software decoder.

By default, apps use the existing AV1 decoder called ‘libgav1’ instead of the newer ‘dav1d’ decoder. To use the newer decoder, apps have to request it specifically. This is the same thing that YouTube started doing immediately after the March 2024 Google Play System Update was released.

So, when the older AV1 decoder is used, older affordable and mid-range phones may experience performance issues and skipped frames. Moreover, some users have expressed concerns (via Android Police and Mishaal Rahman) that their phones may use more battery power while using the older decoder on a software level.

Since not everyone has received or installed the March 2024 Google Play System Update, people with older and less powerful Galaxy phones and tablets might notice performance slowdowns in the coming weeks.

Samsung is now rolling out a new update to Good Lock, and according to the changelog, it improves the ability of the app to update all the modules at once. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t mentioned what those improvements are. According to the changelog, the update also fixes “various” bugs. All in all, with the update, Good Lock should work better than before. With the update, the app’s version should change to 2.2.04.92. To update Good Lock, go to Galaxy Store » Menu » Updates.

Since last month, Samsung has updated multiple Good Lock modules, including Theme Park, LockStar, Home Up, ClockFace, Wonderland, and MultiStar to offer new features and fix bugs. Samsung kicked off the month of March with new challenges for Samsung Health and PENUP users. As usual, the new Samsung Health challenge is a month-long, and PENUP artists can participate in a two-week contest before the theme changes in mid-March.

Here are the current live challenges. For Samsung Health, the March theme is “Jungle.” Samsung asks participants if they've become too dependent on high-tech devices and invites them to “Imagine getting lost in a jungle where you're totally unplugged from technology. Things may be uncomfortable, but think of it as an adventure.”

As for the PENUP challenge, it began on March 1 and will end on March 15. The theme is “Let's Draw School,” and as usual, Samsung wrote a fairly lengthy introduction to the challenge to set the mood and inspire digital painters.

There's always room for interpretation with these PENUP challenges, but Samsung encourages PENUP users to “Take on this month's challenge by drawing schools you attended in the past, the memories you have from school, or schools from our future.”

If you want to participate in these March challenges, open Samsung Health on your Galaxy phone, access the “Together” tab, and accept the Jungle challenge.

As for PENUP, you can access the “Challenges” tab from the app's main screen, tap the “Let's Draw School” banner at the top, and tap the cup-shaped button in the lower right corner. Before you start drawing, as usual, you can also view submissions from other PENUP users and read the challenge's description by tapping “Introduction.”

Samsung's Galaxy Book laptops and Galaxy mobile devices are getting better integrated every year. Features like Second Screen work great across One UI for tablets and Windows OS on Galaxy Books. And recently, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earbuds received a firmware update that enabled Auto Switch for the new Galaxy Book 4 series.

Meanwhile, Samsung is now making big moves to become a better health and fitness-oriented mobile device brand, and to this end, the company will release its first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring, later this year.

This new wearable has health and fitness tracking capabilities like a Galaxy Watch and even enables additional sleep-tracking features that are not yet available to Galaxy Watch users, i.e., respiratory rate tracking, heart, night movement, and sleep latency tracking.

With such a powerful push into the health and fitness market and cross-device features becoming more prevalent, I think it might be time for Samsung to expand the Health platform to include Galaxy Books laptops.

Samsung Health for laptops would even outsmart Apple

It took a long while for Samsung to bring its Health app to tablets, but it happened with the Galaxy Tab S9 series. Now, Samsung is expanding its wearable lineup with new Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Ring devices. And as Galaxy Book laptops are seemingly becoming more interconnected with mobile devices, it makes sense, in my mind, for the Health platform to expand its reach even further.

The Galaxy Ring should be a no-nonsense fitness and health tracker for all. It has the opportunity to become ubiquitous among health and fitness enthusiasts, as it works seamlessly in the background and doesn't have unnecessary gimmicks or distractions. And I think it would only be fitting for Galaxy Ring users to have the option to check their health and fitness data through their Galaxy Book laptops.

In doing so, Samsung would prove that the Galaxy Ring and its Health platform are designed for every type of user. It seems fitting for Samsung, an official sponsor of the Olympic Games, to overcome platform-specific limitations.

This move could even attract customers from Apple's camp. The Cupertino giant's Health app doesn't work on MacBooks, possibly to lure customers into buying iPhones and iPads. Samsung could, and should, in my opinion, show Apple how it's done.

Editor's Note: The mobile Samsung Health app can be accessed on the Galaxy Book series through the Phone Link software. However, it's not a native solution for Windows OS. It's more like mirroring your mobile Health app to your laptop. Nevertheless, you can technically access Samsung Health on a Galaxy Book via Phone Link if you connect your Galaxy laptop and phone. That's better than nothing, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

Control your SmartThings ecosystem without opening the app

Once you have everything set in SmartThings, you can control devices, routines, scenes and more from your Galaxy phone's or tablet's quick panel. You don't even have to open the SmartThings app if you don't want to.

Here's how you can do this on mobile devices that run the latest One UI versions, such as the Galaxy S24.

Swipe the status bar down twice (or once using two fingers) to access the quick toggle area. Then, tap the rectangular “Device Control” button. That's all! You can now control your SmartThings devices, routines, services, scenes, and more from this quick panel area. And there's a convenient “Open app” button if you really want to dive deeper into the SmartThings mobile app.

As you may have guessed, you can also customize this Device Control quick panel in One UI by adding other IoT platforms besides SmartThings, changing some security settings concerning the visibility of your SmartThings controls on the lock screen, and customizing which devices, scenes, services, and so on show up in the Device Control quick panel. Try experimenting with this feature and find your best setup.
