Titanium phones seem to be all the rage these days, at least for Samsung and Apple. Samsung has made a big deal about the Galaxy S24 Ultra being made with the material, and now reports claim the company may also use the metal for the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 6 “Slim.”

According to The Elec, Samsung’s parts suppliers say the firm is making the final decision on whether to use stainless steel or titanium for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim’s backplate. This would be the first time the tech giant has used titanium for the backplate on any of its foldables.

Up until now, the company has used either stainless steel or carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for its backplates. Specifically, it used stainless steel up to the Fold 2, then switched to CFRP with the Fold 3 and onward. The reason why this switch was made has to do with the addition of S Pen recognition, which first appeared on the Fold 3. A digitizer is used in these devices to recognize the stylus and a metal backplate can interfere with that recognition.

It’s reported that this slim variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 does not have S Pen recognition support. As such, Samsung is free to use metal again for the backplate. Using titanium as the backplate material over stainless steel is not as straightforward as it would seem. Titanium is stronger and lighter than stainless steel, but it’s also harder to process.

Whatever Samsung decides, the outlet says that decision will be made soon. It also claims that the phone will be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

Don’t get your hopes up if you live in the US, however. This foldable is expected to only release in China and possibly South Korea.

The next-generation foldable Pixel is reportedly 10.5mm thin (dimensions: 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5mm) when closed. That is 1.6mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

It is heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, though, at 257g. Samsung's new foldable weighs 239g, which is almost as light as the Galaxy S24 Ultra (232g).

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold's inner screen reportedly measures 8 inches diagonally, making it slightly bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6's. Moreover, the screen is said to reach peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits, 100 nits brighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The Pixel's cover screen is reportedly 6.3 inches diagonally, but it is wider with an aspect ratio of 20:9 as opposed to the Galaxy Z Fold 6's 22:9 aspect ratio.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to have a 4,650mAh battery. That's 250mAh bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6's battery.

According to another leak, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has the Tensor G4 processor and 16GB RAM. The Pixel has more RAM than Samsung's foldable.

It has a 48MP primary camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide camera, a 10.8MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, and two 10MP selfie cameras (one on the cover screen and another on the inner screen). The telephoto camera has a higher zoom than the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

Despite being thinner, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to be better equipped than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Of course, it has the advantage of having a bigger screen, which means Google has more width to fit a bigger battery and a bigger telephoto lens. However, it could have a weaker processor, as Tensor chips have been historically slower and less efficient than their Exynos and Snapdragon counterparts.

Hopefully, Samsung will bring a thinner and better-specced foldable phone with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim later this year.

Among all other foldable phones, Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 6 ranks highest in terms of camera performance, according to independent review website DxOMark. Interestingly, the Fold 6 even beats the Pixel Fold in the zoom department, even though Google's foldable phone technically has a superior telephoto camera.

By camera performance, DxOMark ranks the Galaxy Z Fold 6 1st among all other foldables and 45th in the global ranking. Its camera setup scores 133 points, which is the same as devices like the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, Pixel 7a, Galaxy S24 and S24+, and Galaxy S23 and S23+.

By sub-categories, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 scores 135 points in the zoom department, which is substantially higher than the 117 points achieved by the Google Pixel Fold.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom capabilities, whereas the Pixel Fold boasts a 10.8MP telephoto shooter with 5x optical zoom. The latter is superior on paper, but DxOMark suggests the Fold 6's telephoto camera wins over Google's despite the hardware differences.

What other things does the Z Fold 6 do well

Across other camera characteristics, the independent review website praised the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for its fairly wide dynamic range and good exposure, low noise in bright environments, good depth estimation in bokeh photos, effective video stabilization, good colors in video recordings, decent telephoto details in long-range shots, and good video detail in most conditions.

On the other hand, no camera is without fault, and DxOMark criticizes the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for things like autofocus errors in low light, some luminance and chroma noise in low light, occasional color rendering inaccuracies, luminance noise in ultra-wide shots, underexposed night shots when not using the flash, unstable autofocus and refocusing in video mode, and a few other issues.

One of the worst things that can happen to a foldable phone is to suffer from a foldable display failure. Although they get tougher every year, foldable panels remain more susceptible to breakdowns and damage than standard non-foldable displays. It is one of the reasons why many people remain reluctant toward foldable phones and haven't bought one yet. That and the high costs associated with replacing a state-of-the-art foldable display.

Nevertheless, Samsung stands by its foldable phones with something called ‘Galaxy Z Assurance,' not to be confused with Samsung Care+ insurance.

Galaxy Z Assurance is a sort of stamp of approval and comes with a one-time discounted foldable screen replacement. It appears to be specific to the US market, where the following Galaxy Z Assurance render is featured on the online store's landing pages for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung's stamp of approval claims that the latest phones are “Built to withstand” and are tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds or “10 years of approximate use.”

You'd have to fold the Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Z Fold 6 roughly 55 times a day to reach 200,000 folds in 10 years. Nevertheless, assuming you will need a foldable screen replacement, the Galaxy Z Assurance program could save you some money.

One-time $200 screen replacement for a limited time

Samsung's Galaxy Z Assurance policy states that you can get a cheap(er) one-time foldable screen replacement for your Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Galaxy Z Flip 6 should you need it. It will set you back only $200.

Without this policy, replacing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 inner screens would cost you $549 and $319, respectively. However, there is a caveat you'll need to keep in mind.

What might disappoint you is that this Galaxy Z Assurance policy has an expiry date. So, if you planned on using your foldable phone for many years — maybe seven or so — and thought you could use this repair policy later, you won't be able to.

More specifically, Samsung states that the one-time discounted screen replacement must be claimed within two years of the date of purchasing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Galaxy Z Flip 6.

After that, you'll have to pay the full price for a screen replacement, should you need one, regardless of whether or not you used your Galaxy Z Assurance ticket within the first two years.

Sometime this month or the next, Samsung will launch the One UI 7.0 Beta Program and invite Galaxy smartphone users in select countries to test the next version of One UI and Android 15.

Samsung will use feedback provided by beta testers to fix bugs and issues so it can get the final version of the Android 15 and One UI 7.0 update out as quickly as possible.

Not everyone will be able to test the new software, even if they own a device eligible for One UI 7 and Android 15. Only a limited number of Galaxy smartphones will be eligible for the beta program.

For flagship phones launched in the last couple of years, One UI 7.0 will be preceeded by One UI 6.1.1. The time frame for the One UI 6.1.1 update's release is unknown as of August 2, but we expect it to go live sometime before September.

As the anticipation builds for Samsung’s summer Unpacked event, rumors and leaks about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have started pouring in. The latest one comes from 9to5Google, who have obtained images of both phones’ prototype units (via Sonny Dickson), dashing some of the high hopes we previously had from Samsung’s next-gen foldables phones.

The leaked images of the Z Fold 6 reveal a design that appears to be an iterative upgrade from the current Z Fold 5. While earlier reports hinted at a slightly wider outer screen, the aspect ratios of both displays remain largely unchanged, and the crease on the inner display doesn’t seem to have seen significant improvement.

As widely expected now, the Z Fold 6 does seem to have a more boxy form with flat edges and squared-off corners, but the rest of the design, including the triple camera layout and button placement, remains borrowed from the Z Fold 5.

Similarly, the Z Flip 6 images showcase a more boxy design, but the display crease is still quite visible. One noticeable change is the slightly more protruding dual cameras on the back, potentially emphasizing the upgraded main camera sensor. Both phones do appear to fold flat without any gap, but their predecessors have already achieved that feat.

It’s crucial to remember that the leaked images depict prototype or “dummy” units, meaning they are subject to extensive changes throughout the design process. The final versions of the devices may differ significantly from what is seen in these images.

We anticipate Samsung will soon confirm the July 10 date for its Galaxy Unpacked event, where all details about the new foldables will be officially unveiled.

Samsung will officially announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 at its Unpacked event in Paris on July 10. Samsung will also unveil new smartwatches, its first smart ring, and new wireless earbuds at the same venue.

Vivo's already come out with its Galaxy Z Fold 6 rival, dubbed the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, and it appears the company will be assembling the device locally in India to enhance competitiveness.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro was first unveiled in China back in March this year. It features a 6.53-inch OLED cover display and an 8.03-inch internal foldable panel. It even has an IPX8 water resistance rating, matching one of the key selling points of the Galaxy Z Fold series.

You'll find Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset under the hood with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. It has a whole host of other top-notch features as well, making the device deserving of its ~$1,385 price tag, lower than the Galaxy Z Fold's $1,799 starting price.

Vivo has its sights set on the premium segment in India. The company is going to assemble the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro in India, using some local materials in the supply chain as well, to better compete against Samsung in the rapidly growing foldable smartphone segment. The devices will be assembled at Vivo's new 170-acre factory in Noida.

No word as yet on pricing but the mid-June launch window makes it clear that Vivo wants to get its product out in the market before Samsung releases the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which won't happen until the end of July at the very least, as the Unpacked event takes place on July 10.

WinFuture says the cheaper model is internally codenamed Q6a. Tipster Max Jambor also corroborated this codename, as well as the Q6 alias for the standard model. For reference, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 was codenamed Q5, which is why Q6a is believed to be the cheaper version.

However, Roland Quandt of WinFuture says he has heard murmurings around MWC 2024 that suggest Q6a could be an “Ultra” model instead of a budget model. We’ll have to keep our ears to the ground to see what Q6a turns out to be.

What will the Galaxy Z Fold 6 look like?

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be a departure from the conventional look of the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Fold 4, and Fold 3 before. That is because Samsung could be experimenting with a different aspect ratio for the device, according to multiple leaks so far.

Twitter leaker Revegnus claimed that Samsung will change the aspect ratio of the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s external display. Analyst Ross Young also claimed that the foldable and cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be larger than that on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, though no dimensions or other details were provided on a public platform.

Leaker Yogesh Brar mentions that the cover display on the Fold 6 could be 6.4-inches diagonally, up from the 6.2-inch cover display on the Fold 5. The Fold 6 could be wider, with a 20:9 aspect ratio for the cover screen, compared to the 23.1:9 cover screen aspect ratio on the Fold 5. Consequently, the change in shape will also change the internal screen’s aspect ratio, marking it up to be a bit more squarish at 1.08:1, compared to the previous 5:6 aspect ratio.

Twitter leaker Revegnus claimed that Samsung will continue to use the same image sensor as the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but the leaker also mentioned that “there’s talk of equipping the Fold 6 with the same camera sensor as the S24 Ultra,” meaning it could see a bump up to a 200MP primary camera.

A report from GalaxyClub said Samsung was planning to use a 50MP primary camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 6, adding that it is the same camera as the Galaxy S24. The outlet couldn’t comment on the 200MP primary camera claims. For instance, Samsung is said to have skipped out on S Pen-related functionality. This means that the cheaper Fold 6 could skip out on the digitizer needed for stylus input, so you wouldn’t be able to use an S Pen on the phone at all. The report mentions that other parts could also see changes to bring the price down.

A wider cover screen and a thinner design

While we generally like the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 5, it is not without its flaws. There are a few design elements that we’d like to see changed for the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

First up, we’d like to see a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z Fold 6. The Fold 5 is thick and heavy, making it a challenge to fit it comfortably into a pocket or a smaller purse. While it might be possible, it’ll be snug. It’s time for Samsung to embrace a change here.

Next, let’s talk about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 cover screen. While the current display is relatively big at 6.2 inches, some apps have trouble with its awkward aspect ratio and will render incorrectly. Samsung needs to adopt a wider cover display with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 so the front screen experience feels more like a typical smartphone.

Improved cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the most expensive phone produced by Samsung, yet it lacks the company’s best mobile camera technology onboard. Samsung typically reserves its top-tier camera features for the Galaxy S Ultra, and we believe it’s time for Samsung to level the playing field.

The Samsung Z Fold 5 utilizes the same camera package as its predecessor: a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10MP telephoto camera with up to 3x zoom. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts a 200MP main camera, accompanied by a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 10MP periscope camera with up to 10x optical zoom.

While the Z Fold 5 captures reasonably decent pictures, they don’t compare to some of the best Android camera phones available. We hope to see the Z Fold 6 and Galaxy S24 Ultra share the same camera configuration next year. Perhaps Samsung could even introduce an Ultra model that shares the same camera while utilizing a lesser configuration for the base model.

Better battery life and faster charging

Samsung has kept the same 4,400mAh battery since the Z Fold 4, and it’s just not enough. As we noted in our Z Fold 5 review, it can get you through a day but not much more than that. For power users, you’ll struggle even harder. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 needs to push closer to the 5,000mAh mark. How likely is this? It’s hard to say, but we’d imagine a small boost of a few hundred mAh is more likely than a big jump.

As we mentioned earlier, there’s already a rumor claiming Samsung has reverse-engineered HUAWEI’s foldable looking for inspiration to make thinner designs while maintaining great battery life. If Samsung wants to make its devices thinner, it is more likely to come at the detriment of battery life, not the other way around. Still, we can hope, right?

The battery size wouldn’t be so bad if Samsung could include faster charging. In 2023, an expensive device like the Fold 5 shouldn’t be stuck with 25W charging, especially when the Galaxy S23 Ultra already offers 45W charging. Just like with the camera, we really want better feature parity between the S Ultra and Fold.

Get rid of the crease

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 can now fold completely flat, which is awesome. What’s less awesome is the crease. While this element has improved over the last few generations, it’s still way too distracting. It would be one thing if all foldable phones had the same crease issue, but we’ve seen smaller creases on devices like the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 3 and OnePlus Open.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 should offer a nearly creaseless display, otherwise, it risks falling behind other newer foldable phones in 2024 and beyond.

Include the S Pen, and a holder too

One of the standout features of the Fold is its compatibility with the S Pen, offering users the versatility for note-taking, drawing, and various other tasks. However, it’s worth noting that the S Pen doesn’t come bundled with the device, requiring users to purchase the official accessory separately, typically priced at around $50. While cheaper alternatives are available, this additional cost may deter some users. It’s a shame because there are many cool S Pen features that some users may not even be aware of, and they might be more willing to explore the S Pen’s capabilities if it were provided for free.

It’s not enough just to include the stylus, though. If Samsung wants to stand out further from other foldables, it should include an actual S Pen storage slot built into the device. How plausible is this? Given the rumors of a larger display, it’s certainly possible there could be room to include an S Pen slot. What’s unclear is if Samsung cares enough about S Pen to spend the money adding what many consider a niche feature. we certainly hope so, at least.

Samsung’s Galaxy foldables have dominated the foldable market globally, setting the benchmark that other foldables have to beat. While others can and do overthrow Samsung on specifications, Samsung’s marketing and global distribution network is miles better than anything from the competitors. So, it is natural to get excited about the next foldables, which are widely expected to be the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. If new leaks are to be believed, these could arrive earlier than usual this year.

Earlier today, Max Jambor took to X (formerly Twitter) to give us the codenames for Samsung’s upcoming foldables — Q6, Q6a, and B6. It’s believed that Q6 refers to the Fold 6 and B6 refers to the Flip 6, while Q6a refers to the rumored Fold 6 variant.

Rumors of a second Fold device have been running for a while, and the Q6a designation would suggest it’s a cheaper model, like the Pixel 7a or Nothing Phone 2a. However, Roland Quandt from WinFuture says he’s heard information during MWC 2024 that the Q6a model may be more expensive than the standard model.

This means the Galaxy Z Fold 6 may become the basic model, while Q6a may end up being a higher-end device. Quandt adds that the device may be called the Galaxy Z Fold 6 “Ultra” and could possibly feature things like a bigger display, different cameras, and so on.
