Sometime this month or the next, Samsung will launch the One UI 7.0 Beta Program and invite Galaxy smartphone users in select countries to test the next version of One UI and Android 15.

Samsung will use feedback provided by beta testers to fix bugs and issues so it can get the final version of the Android 15 and One UI 7.0 update out as quickly as possible.

Not everyone will be able to test the new software, even if they own a device eligible for One UI 7 and Android 15. Only a limited number of Galaxy smartphones will be eligible for the beta program.

The latest flagships, like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, are sure to be on the list, but what about other devices?

Galaxy phones that could get One UI 7.0 (Android 15) beta

Samsung has not officially revealed details about the One UI 7.0 beta as of August 2, but we can make an educated guess based on Samsung's long history of One UI beta programs. The following are the devices that have a high likelihood of getting the One UI 7.0 beta.

Samsung may include more devices, particularly mid-range ones, in the beta program. However, Samsung doesn't follow a set pattern when it comes to bringing One UI beta updates to mid-range devices. We will have to wait and see what the company has in store this year.

For flagship phones launched in the last couple of years, One UI 7.0 will be preceeded by One UI 6.1.1. The time frame for the One UI 6.1.1 update's release is unknown as of August 2, but we expect it to go live sometime before September.

One UI 7.0 features: What to expect

The Galaxy S22 series was launched in 2022, and the phones have aged quite gracefully thanks to the flagship headroom that they launched with. Samsung has newer flagships in the form of the Galaxy S24 series, but the company is bringing over its highlight Galaxy AI software features to the older Galaxy S22 series. The One UI 6.1 update with these features had just begun rolling out to the Galaxy S22 series, but it seems that rollout has been temporarily halted.

X user Tarun Vats noticed that the One UI 6.1 build for the Galaxy S22 series has been reverted from Samsung’s FOTA server. We spotted user reports on Samsung Community forums indicating that the Galaxy S22 series update was halted due to bugs. It appears that after updating, in some cases, the lock screen stops working, followed by the touch screen, prompting the need for a factory reset.

The Galaxy S24 series launched with a variety of Galaxy AI features. We’ve already seen most of these features come to the Galaxy S23 series and several other flagship phones as part of the One UI 6.1 update, but it looks like the Galaxy S22 series is next in line.

Galaxy S22 owners in Korea have confirmed that Samsung has pushed the One UI 6.1 update to their phones (h/t: Tarun Vats), weighing in at 3.1GB. Check out the machine-translated screenshots below.

Earlier this week, Samsung finally released the One UI 6.1 update for flagship phones launched prior to 2023. It's a limited rollout as the update is only available in Korea as of May 3, and Samsung has even paused the rollout for the Galaxy S22 series due to unforeseen issues.

After a few months of waiting, Samsung's 2021 and 2022 flagship phones have finally started getting the highly anticipated One UI 6.1 update with Galaxy AI features. Yesterday, Samsung began the One UI 6.1 rollout for the Galaxy Z3 and Z4 lineups, the Galaxy S21 series, and the Galaxy S22 trio of 2022 flagships.

At the moment, the One UI 6.1 update is available only in Korea, but it should reach more markets soon, even though Samsung may have halted the update for the Galaxy S22 due to alleged boot issues.

In any case, this firmware release brings many new features and at least one under-the-hood change you need to be aware of if you're a latecomer to One UI 6.1 and are now waiting for this fresh release.

Without further ado, here are the first things you should do once you get One UI 6.1 on your 2021 or 2022 high-end phone.

Bring back Notification Categories

One of the One UI 6.1 update's quirks is that it hides the Notification Categories menu, preventing users from managing notification types on the go.

As you probably know, the brilliant Notification Categories feature lets One UI users choose which notification types they can receive from apps individually. For example, it lets you turn off miscellaneous and marketing notifications for apps while keeping other, more important notification types enabled.

More so, this feature lets users manage notification types on the fly by tapping and holding a notification they don't like and turning it off with just a few screen taps.

Although this feature is now hidden in One UI 6.1, it still exists, and you can bring it back. To do this, open the Settings app, access “Notifications,” go to “Advanced settings,” and tap the “Manage notification categories for each app” toggle ON.

Beware the missing Samsung gestures

One other change you need to be aware of once you update your phone to One UI 6.1 is that Samsung navigation gestures are gone. The only remaining options are on-screen nav buttons and the arguably superior Google navigation gestures.

However, if you prefer Samsung gestures and you're actively using them, you won't be able to once you update to One UI 6.1. But fortunately, there is a way to re-enable them.

Try these Galaxy AI features

On the more enjoyable side of things, the One UI 6.1 update brings Galaxy AI to your older flagship phone. For 2022 Galaxy flagships, the AI suite consists of almost everything that debuted with the Galaxy S24 series, except for Instant Slow Mo inside the Gallery app.

For 2021 flagships, things look a bit sadder, as it seems like there's only one Galaxy AI feature available for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, and Galaxy S21 series, and that is Circle to Search.

Once you get One UI 6.1, you'll probably want to try some Galaxy AI tools before others. We recommend taking Generative Wallpaper, Generative Edit, and Circle to Search for a spin.

• To access Generative Edit, pinch the home screen, go to “Wallpaper and style,” tap “Change wallpapers,” select “Generative” under the Creative category, and start generating AI wallpapers based on keywords.
• To use Generative Edit, open the Gallery app, select an image you want to edit, tap the pencil-shaped button, and then press the Generative AI icon that looks like a couple of stars on a blue gradient background. Check our review for all you need to know about Generative AI.
• To use Circle to Search, simply tap and hold the home button/gesture handle and then circle around or tap objects on the screen to view relevant web searches. It's that simple.

Galaxy AI brings a few other tools you may try, albeit they are focused more on productivity. As long as you are using a 2022 flagship model with One UI 6.1, you can summarize articles in Samsung Internet and Samsung Notes, use the new AI-powered Interpreter, translate calls on the fly, and even change the tone of your messages with Chat Assist.

Lastly, you should keep in mind that you can manage most of these new Galaxy AI features individually by opening the Settings app, accessing “Advanced features,” and tapping “Advanced intelligence.”

The rollout has reportedly been paused because some Galaxy S22 units may fail to boot or unlock after the update has been installed. However, users on the Samsung Community forums in Korea, the only market where One UI 6.1 has been released for now, don’t seem to have run into any issues themselves.

Users who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 may want to wait

Furthermore, Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed that it has paused the rollout nor acknowledged any issues, so it's not fully confirmed that the update has been taken off the air.

Still, Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra owners who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 might want to wait for more information to come out before proceeding with the installation.

In fact, Galaxy S21, Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, and Flip 3 owners may also want to stay on One UI 6.0 for the time being, as boot or unlock issues are not uncommon with major software updates and the fix often involves factory resetting affected devices.

Since the One UI 6.1 update for pre-2023 Galaxy devices has not been released outside Korea yet, Samsung should be able to get things under control before the situation gets out of hand. However, this could mean that the update will be delayed by a few days or even weeks.

Buying a used phone is always a gamble. It might work fine now but you never know what gremlins it must be hiding. When they do surface, you could be on the hook for expensive repairs, particularly if the devices are out of warranty.

If you're in the market for a used Samsung phone, it might be best to avoid the models that have the display green line issue. Samsung has been offering free display replacements in select markets but there's a time limit on that offer. If you get caught outside that window, you'll have to pay for the costly display replacement yourself.

We first heard about the display green line issue on some Samsung phones last year. Users reported seeing unusual green lines on their device's display. What was particularly confusing was the fact that these lines didn't appear because people dropped their phones or bumped something sharp on the display. The lines appeared after a software update.

The issue seems to plague Samsung devices that have Super AMOLED displays. There have even been similar reports about phones from other companies that use Samsung displays in their devices. It's unclear precisely what's causing the issue. Samsung hasn't shed much light on it, even though it has offered free display replacements.

Galaxy S20, S21, S22, and Note 20 series are most affected

The display green line issue affects the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy S22 series as well as the Galaxy Note 20 series. Any model from these lineups could develop the problem, but that's not to say it most certainly will. The affected units are still few and far between when you consider that Samsung has sold tens of millions of units across all of these product lines.

Nevertheless, if you're going to buy a used Samsung phone, it would be best to steer clear of these models if you don't want to deal with a potential problem with the display later on. Samsung's free one-time display replacement offer for out of warranty devices ends on April 30, 2024, anyway, so don't count on a free fix beyond that.

Reports about green lines appearing on the display of some Samsung devices have been going around since last year. This is a big enough issue that the company has officially responded in some markets with the offer of providing a free one-time display replacement for out of warranty devices.

Samsung has been offering these display replacements for select models in India since last year, and the company has now expanded the list of supported models to include the Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy S22 series as well.

There's now a deadline to avail this replacement offer

This green line issue has primarily been reported on devices with Super AMOLED displays. Reports about the issue have reemerged over the past couple of weeks, highlighting the fact that even more devices suffer from it now, requiring Samsung to expand the free replacement offer to additional models.

Samsung India has been providing a free display replacement for affected devices since July last year. The eligible devices included the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Note 20 series. The company has now expanded this list to include the Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy S22 series.

Just like last year, all devices will also be offered a free battery and kit replacement, but it appears that there's now a deadline to avail this offer. Appointments must be booked at a Samsung Service Center until 30th April, 2024 to get a free replacement from the company.

Customers are effectively getting their entire device refurbished with this offer. Getting a new lease on life for a device like the Galaxy S22 that's still relatively modern and will have software support for some time as well is a deal too good to pass up.

Tato zařízení dostanou všechny skvělé funkce založené na umělé inteligenci, jako jsou Generativní úpravy, Shrnutí, Kruh k vyhledávání a další.

Co se týče zařízení z roku 2021, jsou v pořadí Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Flip 3 a Z Fold 3, které dostanou aktualizaci Galaxy AI. Tato zařízení však dostanou pouze funkce Circle to Search a Magic Rewrite, což sice není tak působivé jako některé jiné funkce založené na AI, ale Samsung alespoň pracuje na tom, aby starší zařízení nebyla vynechána.

Samsung přináší umělou inteligenci Galaxy AI i do starších zařízení, což je tak působivé, jak jen to jde. Jihokorejský model AI se do značné míry spoléhá na Gemini Nano, který umožňuje moderním zařízením Galaxy S24 využívat AI lokálně. Model však může mít určité problémy s provozem na zařízeních z let 2022 a 2021. Odhaduji, že zde bude zapojeno velké množství cloudového zpracování, přičemž část zátěže bude předána zařízení, které ji bude muset zpracovávat lokálně. Ať tak či onak, stále se jedná o velmi působivý úspěch.

Další otázkou, která mě napadá, je, zda se budoucí funkce Galaxy AI nedostanou i do starších zařízení. S postupujícím vývojem bude generativní umělá inteligence složitější a bude vyžadovat více prostředků, a proto bude nejlepší, když budou přenechány schopnějším zařízením, jako je řada Galaxy S24 a připravovaná zařízení Galaxy Z.
