We have some exciting information to share, especially for Galaxy A phone users hoping to get their hands on some Galaxy AI action. SamMobile learned from sources that Galaxy AI will eventually expand beyond the high-end segment and reach mid-range Galaxy A phones, starting with a couple of 2024 models.

Our sources tell us that Samsung's latest innovation, Galaxy AI, will land on Galaxy A devices for the first time on a couple of models already released in 2024, namely the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55. However, there are a few caveats.

Not the complete Galaxy AI experience

Firstly, we don't have an exact date when Galaxy AI will reach the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. However, our sources tell us it will happen through the One UI 6.1.1 update, which could land on these mid-range phones this month or the next.

Secondly, not every Galaxy AI feature will be released for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. There's no information regarding which AI tools will make the cut and which ones will be missing, but we're guessing Samsung will leave out the ones that require vast amounts of on-device processing power.

At the time of writing, the most affordable Galaxy AI-enabled phone you can buy is the Galaxy S23 FE. Even the Fan Edition phone is missing Instant Slow-Mo, which was one of the AI features Samsung included in the original Galaxy AI suite for the Galaxy S24 series.

More details after the video

Thirdly, we can only confirm Galaxy AI will go live for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, but not for older Galaxy A devices, even if there are hardware similarities.

For example, the Galaxy A35 uses the same chip as the Galaxy A54, i.e., the Exynos 1380 SoC, but even so, we can't confirm that Galaxy AI will be released for the Galaxy A54. Samsung may limit its efforts to Galaxy A models released in 2024 and later.

Samsung is betting big on Galaxy AI, and at Unpacked 2024, the company confirmed that it wants to bring these innovative AI tools to more than 200 million Galaxy devices, including phones, tablets, and wearables.

Nyní, když Samsung potvrdil svůj plán přenést Galaxy AI do chytrých hodinek, zůstal věrný svým slovům.

Prozatím mají k těmto funkcím přístup pouze uživatelé zařízení Galaxy Watch v USA a Koreji prostřednictvím beta programu One UI 6 Watch a finální aktualizace bude k dispozici v červnu.

Galaxy S21 One UI 6.1 update debuts in the USA

The USA is the first market where the Galaxy S21 FE has received the One UI 6.1 update. The update only seems available for those using the phone on T-Mobile's network, but we can expect a rollout for other carrier variants and unlocked units soon. It shouldn't take long for the update to go live in other markets, either.

Samsung could also start making One UI 6.1 available for mid-range devices like the Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A53 in the next few days. However, there is no official confirmation from the Korean giant, only hints provided by a Canadian carrier, so we would suggest keeping your expectations in check until the rollout actually begins.

If you own a Galaxy S21 FE, you can discover all that the One UI 6.1 update brings to your phone in the official changelog available here. Just don't expect any of the fancy Galaxy AI features. Google's Circle to Search is the only major AI feature that One UI 6.1 brings to flagship Galaxy phones launched in 2021.

To download the One UI 6.1 update, open the Settings app on your phone, select Software update, then tap Download and install. Considering the issues Galaxy S22 owners faced with One UI 6.1, you may want to follow some of the advice here before installing the update on your S21 FE.

There’s no doubt that this feature can be very useful for many people in their day-to-day lives. Well, Apple seems to be impressed with it as the tech giant is working on copying Samsung’s Transcript Assist for iPhone in iOS 18.

According to a new report from Apple Insider, the Voice Memos and Notes applications in iOS 18 will offer the ability to transcribe voice recordings. The two apps will also be able to provide AI-generated summaries for those transcriptions.

The story continues after the video…

That's not the only feature Apple is copying from Samsung

Recently, we also learned that Apple is working on updating the Notes app for iOS with the ability to allow people to record audio from within a note, which is something that Samsung already offers in its Notes app for Galaxy smartphones and tablets. So, that’s another feature Apple is copying from Samsung. Apple is expected to announce iOS 18 at WWDC on June 10. It would be interesting to see which other features the company will copy from Samsung for the upcoming version of the iPhone’s operating system.

Earlier this week, Samsung finally released the One UI 6.1 update for flagship phones launched prior to 2023. It's a limited rollout as the update is only available in Korea as of May 3, and Samsung has even paused the rollout for the Galaxy S22 series due to unforeseen issues.

Still, with the update released for at least one market, we can expect the rollout to pick up pace in the coming days. Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, Z Flip 3, Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Tab S8 owners around the world should soon be able to download One UI 6.1.

If you own one of the mentioned devices, what features, changes and improvements can you expect once you update to One UI 6.1? More importantly: will you get all the Galaxy AI features with One UI 6.1?

The official changelog below has the answer you're looking for. The changelog for these devices is very similar to that of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5. The major difference is that the Galaxy S21 and other devices launched in the same year only get the Circle to Search AI feature.

A few non-AI changes and improvements may also be missing even if they are mentioned in the changelog, but for the most part, everything listed below should be available on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, Z Flip 3, S22, S21, and Tab S8.

Earlier this week, Samsung started rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to flagship smartphones launched in 2021 and 2022. The Galaxy S22 series is on the list of devices getting One UI 6.1, but it appears that Samsung may have halted the rollout because of errors some users have faced after updating their Galaxy S22, S22+, or S22 Ultra.

The rollout has reportedly been paused because some Galaxy S22 units may fail to boot or unlock after the update has been installed. However, users on the Samsung Community forums in Korea, the only market where One UI 6.1 has been released for now, don’t seem to have run into any issues themselves.

Users who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 may want to wait

Furthermore, Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed that it has paused the rollout nor acknowledged any issues, so it's not fully confirmed that the update has been taken off the air.

Still, Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra owners who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 might want to wait for more information to come out before proceeding with the installation.

In fact, Galaxy S21, Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, and Flip 3 owners may also want to stay on One UI 6.0 for the time being, as boot or unlock issues are not uncommon with major software updates and the fix often involves factory resetting affected devices.

Since the One UI 6.1 update for pre-2023 Galaxy devices has not been released outside Korea yet, Samsung should be able to get things under control before the situation gets out of hand. However, this could mean that the update will be delayed by a few days or even weeks.

We'll let you know when we learn more, so stay tuned.

The Galaxy S24 series brought One UI 6.1, and one of the highlights of the new software is Galaxy AI, a suite of AI-powered features that come in very handy in day-to-day life.

Last month, the company rolled out One UI 6.1 to its flagship smartphones and tablets from last year, including the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy S23 series, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series, along with most of the AI-powered features from the Galaxy S24.

Yesterday, Samsung released One UI 6.1 to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3. While One UI 6.1 on the S22, Fold 4, and Flip 4 comes with the same set of Galaxy AI features that we see on newer devices, it is severely restricted on the Fold 3, Flip 3, and S21. These three devices only get one Galaxy AI feature and that's Google Circle to Search.

Why hasn’t Samsung brought the remaining Galaxy AI features, including Live Translation, Chat Assist, Generative Edit, and Browsing Assist, on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and Galaxy S21? Well, it could either be because these devices don’t have enough processing power and memory or Samsung doesn’t want to offer Galaxy AI to older devices.

If it is the latter, the brand might be taking that approach because if it keeps bringing new features to old devices, people might not upgrade to a new phone, and that's not something any brand, including Samsung, would want. Still, it's disappointing, and Samsung may have to deal with some backlash because of the decision.

Around the time of the Samsung Galaxy S24 launch, Samsung assured us that One UI 6.1 — the software debuting with those phones — would be available on other devices. Now, the company is giving a timeline for when that rollout will begin.

Per Samsung, One UI 6.1 will start rolling out to the Galaxy S23 series (including the Galaxy S23 FE), the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series starting in “late March.” Unfortunately, the company wasn’t more specific than that. We had previously heard this timeline through a leak, but seeing the company confirm it is nice.

  • Samsung has revealed that you can now use the Bixby voice assistant to activate some Galaxy AI features.
  • You can activate live translation, summarization functionality, and more via your voice.
  • Some Galaxy AI features aren’t supported via Bixby, though.

Samsung announced a variety of Galaxy AI features alongside the Galaxy S24 series. Now, the company is making it easier to activate these features if you use its venerable Bixby assistant.

Samsung confirmed that you can now use Bixby to activate these brand-new Galaxy AI features. The manufacturer’s voice assistant supports the activation of Note Assist, Call Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, and Interpreter.

This means you can ask Bixby to do things like summarize a page, translate a file, and more. The Galaxy maker outlined some of these commands as seen in the graphic below.

Samsung confirmed that not all Galaxy AI features are supported via Bixby. One notable absentee is Chat Assist for translating messages and adjusting your message’s tone. The Generative Edit feature isn’t mentioned, either, although this would be an understandable omission.

Bixby’s support for Galaxy AI features is available in all the assistant’s supported languages, including English, Chinese, French, German, Korean, and Spanish.

  • The company did not confirm a list of devices, but our best guess is that the rollout will start with the Galaxy Watch lineup.
  • Galaxy AI will power intelligent health experiences on Samsung’s wearables.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 series with several AI smarts on board. All the AI capabilities of the phone come under the Galaxy AI umbrella. We already know that Samsung plans to extend Galaxy AI support to older phones, but the company just confirmed that it’s now looking to add Galaxy AI smarts to its wearables.

In an editorial published by Samsung’s President & Head of MX Business, TM Roh, the company revealed that it’s optimizing Galaxy AI for various categories of devices across different services.

“In the near future, the select Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded intelligent health experiences. Samsung will keep enriching and expanding Galaxy AI experiences across categories through collaborations with more industry-leading AI partners,” Roh explained.

We’ve already seen Galaxy AI features expand to the Galaxy Buds for things like Live Translations and Interpreter mode. However, the mention of new AI-powered health features suggests it is ready to step onto the Galaxy Watch lineup. We could also possibly see AI-powered experiences on the upcoming Galaxy Ring — a new category of wearables Samsung is entering.

Roh’s editorial also suggests we’ll be seeing a lot from Galaxy AI in the future. “We’re only getting started. While developing the Galaxy S24 series, we had many ideas and concepts that we wanted to bring to life. Galaxy users will be able to enjoy more Galaxy AI features that build on these ideas and concepts over time as Samsung continuously enhances and grows the mobile AI experiences,” he wrote.

Samsung has announced that it will start rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series at the end of March 2024. This update will bring several Galaxy AI features seen on the Galaxy S24 series to older high-end phones through a hybrid approach. Some AI features will work on-device, while others need an active internet connection.

By the end of 2024, Samsung aims to bring Galaxy AI features to over 100 million Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and wearables.

The One UI 6.1 update will bring Browsing Assist, Chat Assist, Circle to Search with Google, Generative Edit, Instant Slow-Mo, Interpreter, Live Translate, Note Assist, and Transcript Assist to the devices mentioned above.

The Browsing Assist feature allows users to create summaries of articles or webpages, and it only works with the Samsung Internet web browser. It helps users read content and understand it faster.

The Chat Assist feature will enable users to adjust the tone of their language while messaging. Users can get grammar and tone improvements, and the feature works with messaging apps in 13 different languages. With the Circle to Search with Google feature, users can circle anything on the screen to get more information about it online.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra One UI 6.1 Samsung Notes Summarization

With Generative Edit, users can select and erase unwanted objects from images. They can also choose and realign/reposition objects to make an image look like a great shot. They can also adjust images with bad angles and fill the remaining space with matching content created by Generative AI. The Instant Slow-Mo feature lets users turn any regular video into a slow-motion video. It uses AI to generate intermediate frames to double the frames in a video.

The Interpreter mode allows people to converse with others who don't speak their language. This mode opens in split-screen mode on conventional phones, foldable phones, and tablets. Words spoken by a Galaxy device user are transcribed and converted to any other chosen language. Translated text is then converted to voice so the other person can hear it in their language. Similarly, the Live Translate feature translates languages in real time during voice calls. It also works in supported messaging apps, including WhatsApp.

You can check out all these features in our in-depth video below.

The Note Assist feature helps users summarize the text in a note inside Samsung Notes. Summaries can even be used with certain text formatting templates. The Transcript Assist feature works with Samsung's stock Voice Recorder app. It transcribes voice in the recording to text and can even tag up to ten speakers so that users can understand things better. All that transcription can then be summarized, which is great for classes and meetings.

In our video below, you can watch other non-AI features introduced with the One UI 6.1 update. Some of those features, such as wallpaper support on Always On Display, will not be coming to any Galaxy smartphone or tablet launched before the Galaxy S24.

As for other Galaxy phones, many will receive One UI 6.1, but the AI features are currently expected to be exclusive to Samsung's flagship devices launched in 2023 and beyond.

TM Roh, President and Head of the Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible. This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.
