Xbox One update failure "raises awkward questions about the future prospects of console hardware"

Early editions of the original Xbox One console running on dated firmware are failing to download the latest updates, essentially making the 2013-era systems unusable.

That's according to our sister site Eurogamer's Digital Foundry team, which tried to update and use three separate Xbox One consoles. According to its own testing, all three failed to update, as "systems operating on older firmware revisions error out when connected to Xbox Live."

Even though all three had been updated since the 2013 launch – one was running a 2018 dashboard, and two others a dashboard from 2017 – none of them were able to download the latest firmware, either online or via an offline USB.

Samsung has revealed all the details about its new security update. The company will soon release the August 2024 security patch to its eligible smartphones and tablets, and its high-end devices might get the new update first.

Samsung's August 2024 security patch fixes 50 security vulnerabilities

After Google detailed the August 2024 security patch for Android on Sunday, Samsung revealed information about its own August 2024 security patch. It fixes 50 security loopholes found in the previous software. 35 of those fixes have been provided by Google; one of them is marked as critical, while 34 are of moderate severity. One patch has also been provided by Samsung Semiconductor (Samsung's chip-making division).

Samsung has included 14 security fixes that apply only to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The South Korean firm has detailed 12 of those fixes on its security bulletin webpage. Most of them are related to improper access control in several system services. Improper access control was also found in ExtControlDeviceService, Galaxy Watch, Knox, and system property.

Out-of-bound issues in the code were also found in several functions, including libcodec2secmp4vdec.so and libsmat.so. In case of insufficient permission, handling was not done properly in KnoxDualDARPolicy, SumeNNService, and Telephony. Improper input validation was found in the librtp.so function.

These improper access control, out-of-bound, and improper input validation issues allow attackers to gain access to the information in your device without permission or cause the device to crash. The company might start rolling out the August 2024 security patch to Galaxy smartphones and tablets this week.

With its next update, Samsung might start rolling out the One UI 6.1.1-based software update to its high-end devices. It could bring several new features and some Galaxy AI features that debuted with the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 last month to older devices.

Galaxy Watch 7 gets first software update in the USA

Samsung has released a new software update to the Galaxy Watch 7 in the US. The update comes with firmware version L315USQU1AXG2 and has a download size of around 165MB. According to the official changelog, the new update improves the battery charging stability and the battery stability. It should also improve the overall device stability.

Some Galaxy Watch 7 users were complaining about low battery life, and the new update should fix those issues. However, the update seems to have been released on only some network carriers in the US. The Bluetooth-only version of the Galaxy Watch 7 has already received the update.

We have some exciting information to share, especially for Galaxy A phone users hoping to get their hands on some Galaxy AI action. SamMobile learned from sources that Galaxy AI will eventually expand beyond the high-end segment and reach mid-range Galaxy A phones, starting with a couple of 2024 models.

Our sources tell us that Samsung's latest innovation, Galaxy AI, will land on Galaxy A devices for the first time on a couple of models already released in 2024, namely the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55. However, there are a few caveats.

Not the complete Galaxy AI experience

Firstly, we don't have an exact date when Galaxy AI will reach the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. However, our sources tell us it will happen through the One UI 6.1.1 update, which could land on these mid-range phones this month or the next.

Secondly, not every Galaxy AI feature will be released for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. There's no information regarding which AI tools will make the cut and which ones will be missing, but we're guessing Samsung will leave out the ones that require vast amounts of on-device processing power.

At the time of writing, the most affordable Galaxy AI-enabled phone you can buy is the Galaxy S23 FE. Even the Fan Edition phone is missing Instant Slow-Mo, which was one of the AI features Samsung included in the original Galaxy AI suite for the Galaxy S24 series.

More details after the video

Thirdly, we can only confirm Galaxy AI will go live for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, but not for older Galaxy A devices, even if there are hardware similarities.

For example, the Galaxy A35 uses the same chip as the Galaxy A54, i.e., the Exynos 1380 SoC, but even so, we can't confirm that Galaxy AI will be released for the Galaxy A54. Samsung may limit its efforts to Galaxy A models released in 2024 and later.

Samsung is betting big on Galaxy AI, and at Unpacked 2024, the company confirmed that it wants to bring these innovative AI tools to more than 200 million Galaxy devices, including phones, tablets, and wearables.

Sometime this month or the next, Samsung will launch the One UI 7.0 Beta Program and invite Galaxy smartphone users in select countries to test the next version of One UI and Android 15.

Samsung will use feedback provided by beta testers to fix bugs and issues so it can get the final version of the Android 15 and One UI 7.0 update out as quickly as possible.

Not everyone will be able to test the new software, even if they own a device eligible for One UI 7 and Android 15. Only a limited number of Galaxy smartphones will be eligible for the beta program.

The latest flagships, like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, are sure to be on the list, but what about other devices?

Galaxy phones that could get One UI 7.0 (Android 15) beta

Samsung has not officially revealed details about the One UI 7.0 beta as of August 2, but we can make an educated guess based on Samsung's long history of One UI beta programs. The following are the devices that have a high likelihood of getting the One UI 7.0 beta.

Samsung may include more devices, particularly mid-range ones, in the beta program. However, Samsung doesn't follow a set pattern when it comes to bringing One UI beta updates to mid-range devices. We will have to wait and see what the company has in store this year.

For flagship phones launched in the last couple of years, One UI 7.0 will be preceeded by One UI 6.1.1. The time frame for the One UI 6.1.1 update's release is unknown as of August 2, but we expect it to go live sometime before September.

Be sure to bookmark this page so you can check back for any new information that becomes available in the coming days and weeks.

One UI 7.0 features: What to expect

One UI 7.0 will be among the biggest upgrades in years, especially as far as the user interface is concerned. Quite a few of the expected changes and new features have leaked online, and some of the major ones are listed below.

  • New system app icons
  • New background interface
  • A new control area at the bottom of the lock screen
  • Adjustment of shortcut icons (size?) in the left and right corners of the lock screen
  • Pull-down shortcut bar and notification can be independent/merged
  • The pill-shaped UI element in the upper left corner notification bar can display more apps
  • Added interruptible animation and optimized app opening and closing animation curve
  • New battery icon and charging animation bar
  • New camera user interface
  • Added support for 5G SMS messages
  • New notification pop-up animations and closing animations
  • Added unlock animation
  • New button touch and page return animation
  • Added many new desktop widgets of various sizes
  • Added more lock screen widgets
  • Added large folders

One UI 7.0 may not bring new Galaxy AI features. The new AI features from the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, which you can check out in the video below, will come to supported devices with the One UI 6.1.1 update.

Samsung was expected to release the One UI 7.0 update last week, but that didn't happen. We reported that the company delayed the release, and the One UI 7.0 beta update will likely be released later this month. Ahead of that release, a massive leak has revealed many One UI 7.0 features.

Several One UI 7.0 features have leaked weeks before the release

Reliable tipster Ice Universe has posted (via Android Authority) a list of some One UI 7.0 features on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo. According to the tipster, One UI 7.0 has new app icons, a new background (wallpaper?) interface, and a new control area at the bottom of the lock screen. The lock screen shortcuts now seem to have bigger icons.

He also claims that the notifications area and the quick settings panel can be merged if the user wants to. Those pages can also stay independent (similar to One UI 6). There is apparently a pill-shaped animation that can display ongoing activities from more apps (like the timer). One UI 7.0 reportedly introduces a new animation while unlocking a device's screen.

Samsung has reportedly added animations that can be interrupted by the user (like opening an app from the home screen but stopping it by clicking the home screen). Moreover, the South Korean firm is said to have improved app opening and closing animations. The tipster said One UI 7.0 brings a new battery icon and a bar-shaped charging animation.

The South Korean firm seems to have added several new widgets (of various sizes) for the home screen and the lock screen. The tipster also claimed that One UI 7.0 will bring support for large-sized app folders on the home screen.

Ice Universe also confirmed that One UI 7.0 includes a completely redesigned camera app. The new version of One UI reportedly also supports SMS sending and receiving using the 5G network. There also seem to be new animations for notification pop-ups and closing animations.

Leaked One UI 7.0 features list:

  • New system application icons

Watch the leaked icons for the stock Clock and Samsung Internet apps in our video below. Those icons will be available with the One UI 7.0 update.

Samsung will likely open the One UI 7.0 Beta Program for the Galaxy S24 series before the end of this month. The beta program could be available in China, Germany, India, South Korea, the UK, and the US. However, the company's plans can change, so nothing can be said for sure right now.

The June patch comes with fixes for 59 security vulnerabilities discovered on Samsung's smartphones and tablets, more details on which can be found here.

You can download the June 2024 update on your S23, S23+, or S23 Ultra from the phone's Settings » Software update menu. If you prefer upgrading over a USB connection from a Windows PC, you can download Galaxy S23 firmware from our website.

Samsung started rolling out the May 2024 security patch to Galaxy phones and tablets in the second week of this month. So far, the company has released the latest security update to many devices. Unfortunately, we have reached the last day of the month and there’s a long list of devices to which the brand hasn’t released this month’s security update.

Well, the Galaxy M15 won’t be on that list as Samsung is rolling out the May 2024 security patch to the phone in India right before we bid goodbye to the month. The new software update changes the phone’s firmware version to M156BXXS2AXE5 and fixes 45 security issues. To get the update, go to Settings » Software update » Download and install.

Samsung launched the Galaxy M15 with Android 14-based One UI 6.0, and the device is eligible to get One UI 6.1. The new software packs many new features. You can check them out in the video above or learn more about them in this article. Expect Samsung to roll out One UI 6.1 to the Galaxy M15 in the next couple of weeks, or at worst, a couple of months.

Google is working on improving and ironing out Android 15 for a release later this year. As usual, the new OS version introduces a handful of new features, some of which are not entirely original. Instant Hotspot is one such addition to Android 15, and fresh reports say it won't be coming to Samsung Galaxy devices.

First things first, what is Android's new Instant Hotspot feature? In short, it's a neat little tool that lets an Android tablet or Chromebook instantly connect to a phone's hotspot network.

f you use an Android tablet or a Chromebook without Wi-Fi in the vicinity of your phone, you'll see a pop-up asking you whether you want to use your phone's hotspot network, and the process is seamless.

It sounds convenient as much as it sounds familiar to Galaxy device users. And herein lies the apparent reason why Instant Hotspot isn't coming to One UI, Google says (via Android Authority).

Samsung's One UI already has something called Auto Hotspot

If it sounds like you've already encountered something like Google's Instant Hotspot on your Galaxy device, you probably have. Samsung's One UI boasts a feature called Auto Hotspot, which fulfills the same function as Instant Hotspot.

The difference is that Google's Instant Hotspot works with any Android tablet and Chromebook, whereas Samsung's Auto Hotspot only works with Galaxy devices, as long as they share a Samsung account or family group.

Story continues after the video…

On the bright side, Galaxy device users have had Auto Hotspot for some time, and the fact that they won't gain access to Google's version through Android 15 won't make much of a difference to their experience.

As long as you use Samsung Galaxy devices exclusively, you won't miss Instant Hotspot whatsoever. However, if you were hoping to utilize the Auto Hotspot feature in One UI with other Android tablet brands or a Chromebook, you might feel left out once Android 15 lands.

Editor's Note: Samsung might have had to choose between keeping its in-house Auto Hotspot One UI feature — which it developed before Google created Instant Hotspot — or ditching a feature Galaxy device users already have in favor of Google's alternative.

It's understandable why Samsung might not be keen on abandoning Auto Hotspot and why it might not want to overcomplicate the user experience by offering both hotspot features at the same time.

However, seeing how Google's Nearby Share and Samsung's Quick Share have merged, maybe Samsung's Auto Hotspot will eventually merge with Google's Instant Hotspot.

Samsung has put the Galaxy A12 on a biannual security update schedule, which means that it offers two security updates to the smartphone every year. Now, the company is rolling out the first of the two software updates to the Galaxy A12 for this year. It brings the May 2024 security patch to the phone, which fixes 45 security issues.

So far, Samsung has made the May 2024 security patch only for the carrier-locked variant of the Galaxy A12 for the United States. However, we are sure that Samsung will expand the new software update to other variants of the smartphone and in other regions very soon. The new firmware has version A125USQS8CXE6.

The story continues after the video…

If you live in the United States but your carrier-locked Galaxy A12 hasn’t notified you about the new software update, you will have to check for it manually. You can do that by going to Settings » Software update » Download and install. The new firmware is also available in our database for you to download and install manually.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung will offer security updates to the Galaxy A12 for only one more year (till the end of 2025). After that, your smartphone will be more prone to security attacks and at that point, it is a good idea to get a new phone. If you are looking for an affordable one, you can’t go wrong with the Galaxy A35.

Galaxy S21 One UI 6.1 features

The One UI 6.1 update brings several new features, some of which are powered by Galaxy AI. Those features include Circle to Search, AI-powered image editing recommendations, copying objects from one image and pasting to another, more accurate image clipping, improved search in the Gallery app, and the ability to change the playback speed of certain parts of a video. You can start editing videos, export the editing file to another Galaxy device, and continue editing there.

You can decorate wallpapers, add new widgets to the lock screen, customize alarm alerts, add personalized stickers to calendar entries, customize reminder alerts, and choose icons for reminder categories. One UI 6.1 lets you turn off/on Modes & Routines from the home screen. You can reorder Modes and set new Routines conditions.

The update also brings the new Quick Share feature, locate your devices from the dedicated Samsung Find app, share your location with others, and sync Samsung Internet tab groups with other devices. Samsung Cloud offers enhanced data protection, while Samsung Wallet now supports passkeys.

If you want to upgrade from your Galaxy S21, look at the Galaxy S23 or the Galaxy S23+ in our video below. Both phones offer brighter screens, faster processing, better cameras, and longer battery life than the Galaxy S21.

In Samsung Health, you can compete with yourself by comparing your workout results against your previous records. You can have more daily targets, including active hours and floors climbed. Women can record moods and physical symptoms while tracking their menstrual cycles in Samsung Health.

With One UI 6.1, Microphone Modes and Video Call Effects are easier to access. The Weather widget offers more information. You can open all minimized apps at once and input text using voice without leaving the keyboard. There are more ways to protect your Galaxy S21's battery while charging. The Finder screen now offers matching results from the web via Google Search. The update also adds the Google Messages app if it wasn't present.

Thanks for the tip, R. Scott Herron!

Galaxy S21 One UI 6.1 update debuts in the USA

The USA is the first market where the Galaxy S21 FE has received the One UI 6.1 update. The update only seems available for those using the phone on T-Mobile's network, but we can expect a rollout for other carrier variants and unlocked units soon. It shouldn't take long for the update to go live in other markets, either.

Samsung could also start making One UI 6.1 available for mid-range devices like the Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A53 in the next few days. However, there is no official confirmation from the Korean giant, only hints provided by a Canadian carrier, so we would suggest keeping your expectations in check until the rollout actually begins.

If you own a Galaxy S21 FE, you can discover all that the One UI 6.1 update brings to your phone in the official changelog available here. Just don't expect any of the fancy Galaxy AI features. Google's Circle to Search is the only major AI feature that One UI 6.1 brings to flagship Galaxy phones launched in 2021.

To download the One UI 6.1 update, open the Settings app on your phone, select Software update, then tap Download and install. Considering the issues Galaxy S22 owners faced with One UI 6.1, you may want to follow some of the advice here before installing the update on your S21 FE.

Earlier this week, Samsung finally released the One UI 6.1 update for flagship phones launched prior to 2023. It's a limited rollout as the update is only available in Korea as of May 3, and Samsung has even paused the rollout for the Galaxy S22 series due to unforeseen issues.

Still, with the update released for at least one market, we can expect the rollout to pick up pace in the coming days. Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, Z Flip 3, Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Tab S8 owners around the world should soon be able to download One UI 6.1.

If you own one of the mentioned devices, what features, changes and improvements can you expect once you update to One UI 6.1? More importantly: will you get all the Galaxy AI features with One UI 6.1?

The official changelog below has the answer you're looking for. The changelog for these devices is very similar to that of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5. The major difference is that the Galaxy S21 and other devices launched in the same year only get the Circle to Search AI feature.

A few non-AI changes and improvements may also be missing even if they are mentioned in the changelog, but for the most part, everything listed below should be available on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, Z Flip 3, S22, S21, and Tab S8.

After a few months of waiting, Samsung's 2021 and 2022 flagship phones have finally started getting the highly anticipated One UI 6.1 update with Galaxy AI features. Yesterday, Samsung began the One UI 6.1 rollout for the Galaxy Z3 and Z4 lineups, the Galaxy S21 series, and the Galaxy S22 trio of 2022 flagships.

At the moment, the One UI 6.1 update is available only in Korea, but it should reach more markets soon, even though Samsung may have halted the update for the Galaxy S22 due to alleged boot issues.

In any case, this firmware release brings many new features and at least one under-the-hood change you need to be aware of if you're a latecomer to One UI 6.1 and are now waiting for this fresh release.

Without further ado, here are the first things you should do once you get One UI 6.1 on your 2021 or 2022 high-end phone.

Bring back Notification Categories

One of the One UI 6.1 update's quirks is that it hides the Notification Categories menu, preventing users from managing notification types on the go.

As you probably know, the brilliant Notification Categories feature lets One UI users choose which notification types they can receive from apps individually. For example, it lets you turn off miscellaneous and marketing notifications for apps while keeping other, more important notification types enabled.

More so, this feature lets users manage notification types on the fly by tapping and holding a notification they don't like and turning it off with just a few screen taps.

Although this feature is now hidden in One UI 6.1, it still exists, and you can bring it back. To do this, open the Settings app, access “Notifications,” go to “Advanced settings,” and tap the “Manage notification categories for each app” toggle ON.

Beware the missing Samsung gestures

One other change you need to be aware of once you update your phone to One UI 6.1 is that Samsung navigation gestures are gone. The only remaining options are on-screen nav buttons and the arguably superior Google navigation gestures.

However, if you prefer Samsung gestures and you're actively using them, you won't be able to once you update to One UI 6.1. But fortunately, there is a way to re-enable them.

You can bring Samsung gestures back through the NavStar Good Lock module, regardless of whether or not you're in a market where Good Lock is supported. Check out our full guide for more details on how to use Samsung gestures in One UI 6.1.

Try these Galaxy AI features

On the more enjoyable side of things, the One UI 6.1 update brings Galaxy AI to your older flagship phone. For 2022 Galaxy flagships, the AI suite consists of almost everything that debuted with the Galaxy S24 series, except for Instant Slow Mo inside the Gallery app.

For 2021 flagships, things look a bit sadder, as it seems like there's only one Galaxy AI feature available for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, and Galaxy S21 series, and that is Circle to Search.

Once you get One UI 6.1, you'll probably want to try some Galaxy AI tools before others. We recommend taking Generative Wallpaper, Generative Edit, and Circle to Search for a spin.

  • To access Generative Edit, pinch the home screen, go to “Wallpaper and style,” tap “Change wallpapers,” select “Generative” under the Creative category, and start generating AI wallpapers based on keywords.
  • To use Generative Edit, open the Gallery app, select an image you want to edit, tap the pencil-shaped button, and then press the Generative AI icon that looks like a couple of stars on a blue gradient background. Check our review for all you need to know about Generative AI.
  • To use Circle to Search, simply tap and hold the home button/gesture handle and then circle around or tap objects on the screen to view relevant web searches. It's that simple.

Galaxy AI brings a few other tools you may try, albeit they are focused more on productivity. As long as you are using a 2022 flagship model with One UI 6.1, you can summarize articles in Samsung Internet and Samsung Notes, use the new AI-powered Interpreter, translate calls on the fly, and even change the tone of your messages with Chat Assist.

Lastly, you should keep in mind that you can manage most of these new Galaxy AI features individually by opening the Settings app, accessing “Advanced features,” and tapping “Advanced intelligence.”

One UI 6.1 rollout for Galaxy S22 possibly halted to address boot issues

3. Květen 2024 v 10:52

Earlier this week, Samsung started rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to flagship smartphones launched in 2021 and 2022. The Galaxy S22 series is on the list of devices getting One UI 6.1, but it appears that Samsung may have halted the rollout because of errors some users have faced after updating their Galaxy S22, S22+, or S22 Ultra.

The rollout has reportedly been paused because some Galaxy S22 units may fail to boot or unlock after the update has been installed. However, users on the Samsung Community forums in Korea, the only market where One UI 6.1 has been released for now, don’t seem to have run into any issues themselves.

Users who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 may want to wait

Furthermore, Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed that it has paused the rollout nor acknowledged any issues, so it's not fully confirmed that the update has been taken off the air.

Still, Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra owners who haven't already updated to One UI 6.1 might want to wait for more information to come out before proceeding with the installation.

In fact, Galaxy S21, Z Fold 4, Fold 3, Flip 4, and Flip 3 owners may also want to stay on One UI 6.0 for the time being, as boot or unlock issues are not uncommon with major software updates and the fix often involves factory resetting affected devices.

Since the One UI 6.1 update for pre-2023 Galaxy devices has not been released outside Korea yet, Samsung should be able to get things under control before the situation gets out of hand. However, this could mean that the update will be delayed by a few days or even weeks.

We'll let you know when we learn more, so stay tuned.

Samsung has released a new software update for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G—yes, the 2020-launched model. If you still have that phone, don't get your hopes too high, as the update doesn't bring a newer version of Android or One UI. It is just a security update.

Galaxy Z Flip 5G gets April 2024 update in the USA

The new software update is now available for the carrier-locked and factory-unlocked variants of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in the USA. The update for the carrier-locked version comes bearing firmware version F707USQS7IXC1 and is available on Sprint's network in the country. The factory-unlocked version of the phone is getting updated with firmware version F707U1UES7IXC1. It, too, is getting the update on Sprint's network.

The new update brings the April 2024 security patch that fixes a few dozen security vulnerabilities. It doesn't bring new features, performance improvements, or stability enhancements.

If you have a Galaxy Z Flip 5G and live in the US, you can install the new update on your foldable phone. To do that, navigate to Settings » Software update, and tap Download and install. You can also download the new firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually. For the manual process, you would need a computer running Windows OS and the Odin tool.

Do Samsung firmware updates cause green line display issues?

We're seeing new reports from people experiencing green line display issues on their Samsung Galaxy phones. Almost like clockwork, these types of reports seem to be spiking once or twice a year, and a portion of affected customers usually claim that the green line defect happened after a firmware update.

The big question now is whether or not you should be afraid of updating the firmware on your Samsung Galaxy phone. Is it safe to update your device? Here's our take on the matter.

Can these hardware failures be caused by firmware updates?

First, what is the green line problem affecting some Samsung Galaxy phone customers? In short, it's a display issue of yet-unknown origins that manifests as one or more vertical green lines (sometimes purple) that run across a Galaxy phone's screen.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus Display Green Line Issue

Many Galaxy phone models have reportedly had this issue, and, in fact, phones from other brands have experienced this as well — even iPhones equipped with OLED panels.

Is this a hardware problem? Is it an OLED-specific issue? Or can firmware updates break Galaxy phone screens in this manner?

Well, smartphones are complex devices, and unless Samsung comes out with an official statement, we can't be too sure of anything. What we can say is that, usually, green and/or purple vertical lines on a smartphone's display indicate a hardware failure — a bad display connection. Not just on Samsung phones but on more or less any device, from any brand, equipped with an OLED panel.

This kind of green line issue can have a few causes. For example, the OLED connection may have short-circuited because of liquid damage or other factors. Dropping the phone can also cause hardware damage and lead to these green line display issues.

There's also the possibility of manufacturing defects — although, in most cases, it's logical to assume that these manufacturing defects would be noticeable immediately upon powering up the phone rather than cropping up after a few years of usage.

But what about firmware updates? Can they cause these green-line issues?

Is it safe to update your Samsung phone?

Until more evidence comes to light, we can't be too sure of the causes behind the green line display issues that affect some Galaxy (and other) phones. However, most signs point to hardware failures and human nature rather than anything that has to do with software.

Some people claim it's all caused by firmware updates, and they've embraced that narrative on social media. But it's probably wiser to avoid sensationalized social media posts when it comes to trying to gain information on any issue. It's probably better to try to identify the same old patterns that crop up year after year and consider the few facts there are:

  • There's an inherent failure rate for any consumer electronics. These green line issues happen, albeit rarely, with every phone brand. However, Samsung is the biggest phone OEM, so it will get the most attention.
  • These green line display issue reports are minuscule in number compared to Samsung's phone sales figures. This issue is far from being as widespread as it may seem.
  • These problems appear to affect users from India the most. However, many phone models not manufactured in India seem to be affected, which suggests this isn't a quality control issue at the Noida plant.
  • Green line display problems seem to affect many models across different price ranges, including Galaxy A, M, S, and Z.
  • Reports concerning the green line display problem often snowball once every few months. Media outlets pick up these user reports, after which more user reports crop up, and so on, creating a feedback loop.
  • Some social media users looking for engagement have faked green-line issues.
  • We shouldn't ignore the human element, i.e., there's always the possibility that a percentage of affected phone users have caused accidental damage to their phones, have had improper third-party screen repairs done to their phones, or are using third-party screens but omit these details in their reports. This makes it even more difficult to identify the real cause of the issue for users who should be eligible for an official explanation or free repairs.
  • Green lines developing after a firmware update can be a mere coincidence. There's nothing linking these together other than conjecture.

Consider this: Samsung India now offers free limited-time display replacements for a few select affected devices.

Therefore, it's logical to assume that the company wouldn't go through all this trouble if it could fix these issues remotely through a firmware update. Rather, the limited-time free screen replacement program might indicate that at least a small number of these green line cases could be caused by a manufacturing defect, and Samsung might be using this limited-time program to investigate the problem further.

Likely, it's more unsafe to never update your phone again

Samsung releases firmware updates regularly — at least once a month for flagship models — which means some of these green line display issues can coincide with firmware update releases, even if the two are completely unrelated.

By the looks of things, it's probably safer to keep updating your phone with new security patches than it is to try to avoid the problem by never updating your phone again. There's a reason why security patches exist.

However, there's always that element of unknown, at least until more details come to light — if ever. So, if you want to be extra careful, you can always turn off automatic updates by opening the Settings app on your phone, accessing “Software update,” and toggling “Auto download over Wi-Fi” off. You can then try to monitor every new firmware update and wait for user reports for a few days or weeks before you update yourself.

For every few great new features and changes in One UI 6.1, there's one that makes me wonder what Samsung was thinking. Don't get me wrong, I love the Galaxy S24+ and One UI 6.1 so far, but some aspects go against my idea of improvement.

As I pointed out before, one such issue has to do with the Notification Categories feature, which One UI 6.1 hides behind a new and arguably useless menu that only serves to make this incredibly useful and streamlined tool unnecessarily obscure. Especially for new users who may not know this feature ever existed.

But, anyway, here's another change in One UI 6.1 that I simply don't understand and bugs me. It's in a similar vein as Notification Categories, i.e., a primary feature that used to be highly accessible and is now inexplicably hidden behind extra menus.

Voice Recorder took steps backward with the Galaxy S24 series

The Voice Recorder app in One UI 6.0 and earlier versions lets users pick between the Standard and Interview recording modes straight from the home screen. In my mind, it makes perfect sense to have these two main modes at the forefront of the Voice Recorder UI. It's sensible to let users choose the best recording mode for each situation with ease.

Here's what the Voice Recorder app's home screen looks like in One UI 6.0, with easy-to-reach “Standard” and “Interview” selection buttons.

Voice Recorder modes in One UI 6.0

Now, moving on to One UI 6.1. True enough, the Voice Recorder app gained very useful new Galaxy AI features like summarize, transcribe, and translate — at least for the Standard recording mode. But for whatever reason, the update also hid the Standard and Interview recording options deep into the app's settings menu. These modes are now four taps away instead of just one.

Voice Recorder modes in One UI 6.1

Needless to say, if you want to record audio with your Galaxy S24, you better go through the app's settings menu and make sure you have the right option selected for the occasion every time you want to start a recording. It's convoluted for no reason, and I'm adamant that the old UI design was superior.

Perhaps Samsung moved the two recording modes to a new menu to ensure that people read the detailed information about each one and understand the Interview mode's AI limitations. Even so, the execution is far from ideal. If you ask me, a new “Recording Mode” shortcut button on the app's home screen would have been much better than hiding this new mode menu deep into the settings screen.

With the next big update, I'm hoping Samsung will address some of these odd UI shortcomings that cropped up on the Galaxy S24 series. I do love the Galaxy S24+, but sometimes, it feels like One UI 6.1 took a few steps back, and it's hard to understand Samsung's decision-making process.

Technically, the second Galaxy S24 update came out a few days back, but it was limited to South Korea and was bundled with the February 2024 security patch. The update that started rolling out today, on the other hand, is available in many more markets.

Galaxy S24's second update is all about security enhancements

Europe appears to be the first region where the latest Galaxy S24 update–featuring a firmware version with AXBG as its last four characters–has been released, but here's hoping it doesn't take long to go live in other regions. And if you haven't yet received even the first update, you may directly get the second one, though this is just speculation for now.

To check for the update on your Galaxy S24 series smartphone, open the Settings app, navigate to Software update, and tap Download and install. Once the new firmware is available in our database, you can download it and flash it manually on your phone using a Windows PC.

As mentioned earlier, this update is exclusively about enhancing the device's security. That shouldn't be surprising considering it comes so soon after the previous update, which brought notable display and camera improvements and didn't begin rolling out in earnest until just a week ago.

Samsung has announced that it will start rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series at the end of March 2024. This update will bring several Galaxy AI features seen on the Galaxy S24 series to older high-end phones through a hybrid approach. Some AI features will work on-device, while others need an active internet connection.

By the end of 2024, Samsung aims to bring Galaxy AI features to over 100 million Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and wearables.

The One UI 6.1 update will bring Browsing Assist, Chat Assist, Circle to Search with Google, Generative Edit, Instant Slow-Mo, Interpreter, Live Translate, Note Assist, and Transcript Assist to the devices mentioned above.

The Browsing Assist feature allows users to create summaries of articles or webpages, and it only works with the Samsung Internet web browser. It helps users read content and understand it faster.

The Chat Assist feature will enable users to adjust the tone of their language while messaging. Users can get grammar and tone improvements, and the feature works with messaging apps in 13 different languages. With the Circle to Search with Google feature, users can circle anything on the screen to get more information about it online.

With Generative Edit, users can select and erase unwanted objects from images. They can also choose and realign/reposition objects to make an image look like a great shot. They can also adjust images with bad angles and fill the remaining space with matching content created by Generative AI. The Instant Slow-Mo feature lets users turn any regular video into a slow-motion video. It uses AI to generate intermediate frames to double the frames in a video.

The Interpreter mode allows people to converse with others who don't speak their language. This mode opens in split-screen mode on conventional phones, foldable phones, and tablets. Words spoken by a Galaxy device user are transcribed and converted to any other chosen language. Translated text is then converted to voice so the other person can hear it in their language. Similarly, the Live Translate feature translates languages in real time during voice calls. It also works in supported messaging apps, including WhatsApp.

You can check out all these features in our in-depth video below.

The Note Assist feature helps users summarize the text in a note inside Samsung Notes. Summaries can even be used with certain text formatting templates. The Transcript Assist feature works with Samsung's stock Voice Recorder app. It transcribes voice in the recording to text and can even tag up to ten speakers so that users can understand things better. All that transcription can then be summarized, which is great for classes and meetings.

In our video below, you can watch other non-AI features introduced with the One UI 6.1 update. Some of those features, such as wallpaper support on Always On Display, will not be coming to any Galaxy smartphone or tablet launched before the Galaxy S24.

As for other Galaxy phones, many will receive One UI 6.1, but the AI features are currently expected to be exclusive to Samsung's flagship devices launched in 2023 and beyond.

TM Roh, President and Head of the Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible. This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.

One very unexpected side effect of using the Galaxy S24+ for the past few weeks is that I'm no longer interested in Samsung's vivid display mode. I know! The vivid mode is iconic among Galaxy phone users, and like many others, I have used it exclusively for years. It was my default setting for Samsung's AMOLED panels, even if it made them unrealistically colorful.

At some point, using Vivid mode was a way to show off the uniqueness of AMOLED and remind yourself that you're using a Galaxy phone rather than an iPhone or a boring Android device. Vivid wasn't necessarily better than the natural screen mode but stood out in a world of Android phones whose LCD panels were neither vivid nor natural but only dull.

However, many things have changed over the past half a decade, and that time's long gone. I must admit I feel like I've been stuck in an obsolete mindset for the past few years without even realizing it, and I am just now, ahem, recalibrating my perception, all because Samsung's Galaxy S24 series does things differently.

Natural is more beautiful

Samsung calibrated the vivid mode differently on the Galaxy S24 series, making it look less vibrant. And after weeks of using the Plus model, I feel like I've seen the light and snapped out of a colorful fever dream.

Whether willingly or by mistake, Samsung converted me to using more natural colors on my Galaxy phone after years of staring into oversaturated tones. And even though the company has been working on recalibrating the S24 series' vivid mode for customers who miss those accentuated colors, I'm no longer among those interested.

I'm not suggesting Samsung should not update the vivid mode for Galaxy S24 users who want their displays to have an extra splash of color, but I am saying that Samsung (willingly or not) tricked me into not caring about vivid mode any longer. And I think it's for the better.

Within my sphere of natural colors rendered by my Neo QLED TV, PC monitor, laptop screen, and even smartwatch, it's hard to understand why I thought the vivid color mode on my Galaxy phone was the only reasonable option. I now realize that it was probably out of force of habit more than anything else. And, let's face it, Samsung's marketing magic from many years ago may have also lingered in my subconscious and played a role.

Nevertheless, it feels as though the Galaxy S24+ dispelled that magic for me. And now that I have used the latest flagship with a more natural color profile, I am not looking forward to reusing bright and vivid tones. I won't. I have already switched to the natural color mode on the Galaxy S24+. And once the vivid color mode firmware update reaches my phone, it won't make a lick of difference to my user experience.
