  • Chrome is about to trial a new feature that will automatically redact sensitive data when you share your Android screen.
  • The Chrome Flag description outlines that form info such as passwords and credit card details would be redacted when screen-sharing or recording.
  • It is not yet known when this feature will be available to try or if it will eventually be rolled out to all users.

Accidentally flashing your password or credit card info is always a worry when you’re sharing your screen. Google is looking to address this concern with an experimental feature for Chrome on Android. When available, Google will automatically detect and redact sensitive data when you’re sharing or recording your screen.

As shared on X by Leopeva64, the feature appears as a new Chrome Flag called “Redact sensitive content during screen sharing, screen recording and similar actions.” Chrome Flags are experimental features that Google has yet to roll out fully, but anyone can try them.

They captured an image of the Chrome Flag and its description that explains how the feature will work. It outlines that “if sensitive form fields (such as credit cards, passwords) are present on the page, the entire content area is redacted during screen sharing, screen recording, and similar actions”

As the description lays out, if you’re sharing your screen or recording it in a way that others might view, this optional tool will add an extra layer of privacy. This level of data protection has hitherto only been available in Chrome’s Incognito Mode, which prevents screen capture by default.

You can’t try out the new Chrome Flag just yet, but it should be available on Chrome Canary in the coming weeks and will work on Android 5 and above. Check out our article on Chrome Flags to learn more about what they are and how to try them.

Despite being resource-hungry, it's the preferred browser for many thanks to its seamless syncing of tabs and history across your devices. Plus, Google regularly updates Chrome with new features and enhancements to deliver a better experience. Despite all this, Chrome for Android has stuck to its old 'Chrome sync' model, where you must manually enable data syncing after logging into your Google account. 15 years after its introduction, Google is finally doing away with this approach.

However, a massive change has been breathing down extension developers' necks now a shift to the Manifest V3 framework, which would make Manifest V2 and all the extensions built around it redundant and incompatible. Google has set the ball rolling and it might spell the end of many ad-blocking extensions such as uBlock Origin.

  • This feature will debut in the upcoming Dev channel release (version 129) and will allow users to move files within the browser and between apps.
  • The “Recent Searches” feature is also likely to get an update in this release.

Google might soon introduce drag-and-drop functionality in the Chrome for Android browser. This feature is already present on the desktop version and certainly saves time for the average user. Given this, launching it for Android is a logical next step that could help improve one’s browsing experience and productivity on the platform.

According to MSPoweruser, this functionality will debut in Chrome for Android’s Dev channel (version 129). Once it’s launched, you’ll be able to move files from one location to another within your browser, as well as from your browser to other apps. The outlet spotted the commit “Enable DragDropFiles for M129” on Chromium, which is why it’s reasonable to expect that this feature will be available for testing shortly.

Furthermore, per the code in the screenshot below, we expect it to be enabled by default in the upcoming release.

In related news, the outlet also spotted a change to the Recent Searches feature in the same Dev channel update. The commit “Enable requesting related searches” suggests that you’ll be able to see related searches as you type. While there’s no guarantee that this feature will be rolled out broadly in the stable channel, the Mountain View tech giant might just do so if user feedback is promising and it significantly improves the user experience.

Google Chrome's long, long project to implement a new browser extension platform is seemingly going to happen, for real, after six years of cautious movement.

One of the first ways people are seeing this is if they use uBlock Origin, a popular ad-blocking extension, as noted by Bleeping Computer. Recently, Chrome users have seen warnings pop up that "This extension may soon no longer be supported," with links asking the user to "Remove or replace it with similar extensions" from Chrome's Web Store. You might see a similar warning on some extensions if you head to Chrome's Extensions page (chrome://extensions).

What's happening is Chrome preparing to make Manifest V3 required for extensions that want to run on its platform. First announced in 2018, the last word on Manifest V3 was that V2 extensions would start being nudged out in early June on the Beta, Dev, and Canary update channels. Users will be able to manually re-enable V2 extensions "for a short time," Google has said, "but over time, this toggle will go away as well." The shift for enterprise Chrome deployments is expected to be put off until June 2025.

  • Google is introducing some new AI features to the Chrome browser.
  • Users will be able to ask Chrome in natural language about their browsing history to rediscover previously visited pages.
  • The Circle to Search and product comparison features found in the beta and Canary channels are now rolling out.

We’ve all experienced that moment where we exit out of a tab(s) we didn’t mean to close. If you weren’t paying attention, finding that lost page can be a hassle. A new feature Google is introducing to the Chrome browser could make it a little easier to rediscover the sites you visited.

In a new blog, Google announces a few new features headed to Chrome, including a new browsing history feature. This feature leverages the tech giant’s conversational AI to help users find previously visited web pages by asking Chrome questions in natural language. For example, you can ask, “What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?” Chrome will then respond by presenting you with relevant pages from your browsing history.

To use this feature, all you have to do is access your history and begin typing (pictured below). Google notes that this feature will not include any browsing data from incognito mode. If this feature is not of interest to you, Google says you can turn it off by going to settings. You can expect the feature to arrive in the US in the coming weeks.

The other two features you may have heard of before. The Tab compare feature was previously seen in Chrome Canary and the Circle to Search functionality on desktop was available in the beta channel.

Just to briefly summarize, Tab compare (seen below) creates an AI-generated overview of products across the tabs you have open. This puts all of that product information in one place, allowing you to easily compare different items.

Meanwhile, Google Lens in Chrome desktop works exactly like Circle to Search on your phone, except you’re highlighting objects instead of circling. Once something on the screen is selected, you can quickly get more information about that subject.

The company says that Tab compare will be rolling out in the next few weeks. Google Lens in Chrome desktop, however, will be available in the next few days.

The folks over at The Mac Observer spotted something interesting hiding in Chrome for iOS. There appears to be a new “Lens Circle to Search” flag that was quietly added to the app. Once the flag is enabled, the Circle to Search feature will be available within Google Lens on iOS.

Google’s innovative Circle to Search feature has been a popular topic of discussion. This feature, which allows users to initiate searches by simply circling on-screen content, is already available on select Pixel and Galaxy devices. Now, it appears Google Chrome users will soon be able to enjoy a similar search experience.

Google Chrome’s current integration with Google Lens empowers users to find more information about text or images on web pages and discover visually similar images elsewhere online. It seems like Google is working on an upgrade that promises to streamline this experience further.

Google has updated its Chrome browser to patch a high-severity zero-day vulnerability that allows attackers to execute malicious code on end user devices. The fix marks the fifth time this year the company has updated the browser to protect users from an existing malicious exploit.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-4671, is a “use after free,” a class of bug that occurs in C-based programming languages. In these languages, developers must allocate memory space needed to run certain applications or operations. They do this by using “pointers” that store the memory addresses where the required data will reside. Because this space is finite, memory locations should be deallocated once the application or operation no longer needs it.

Use-after-free bugs occur when the app or process fails to clear the pointer after freeing the memory location. In some cases, the pointer to the freed memory is used again and points to a new memory location storing malicious shellcode planted by an attacker’s exploit, a condition that will result in the execution of this code.

Google Chrome, one of the most popular web browsers in the world, has introduced three new features aimed at enhancing its search experience.

Google’s search suggestions already do a great job of automatically suggesting potential search queries based on a combination of factors. This includes your past searches, trending topics, and popular searches from other users. The new features announced today are designed to help you get more helpful search suggestions and find information even when your internet connection is poor.

The first feature is based on what others are looking for. Users who are signed into Chrome will now see suggestions in the Google Search box when they open a new tab on desktop. The results show suggestions related to your previous searches and similar to what other people are searching for.

Google says searching for something like “Japchae” — a Korean dish — you might see suggestions for other Korean dishes that you might like. This could help users discover new information or explore related interests.

The second feature is aimed at making your shopping easier. Instead of showing images for search suggestions in the address bar that matched a specific product, Google says the mobile version will now show relevant images for broader search categories. These images are related to but not restricted to your exact search query, thus helping users visualize their search intent even without a specific product in mind.

The third feature is useful for when you have a poor internet connection. Google says on-device capabilities for when you have a bad connection have been improved. Now Android and iOS users can get search suggestions even if their internet is experiencing issues. This feature also extends to Incognito Mode, ensuring users have access to search guidance even when browsing privately.

To enjoy these new search features, make sure you have the latest version of Chrome on your device. Google has also unveiled some exciting new Android features at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024. Watch the video above to see them in action.

  • Chrome for Android will soon let you group a single tab.
  • The feature was spotted in the latest Canary build of the mobile browser.
  • It can be activated in the mobile browser by enabling a flag.

If you’re a stickler for tab organization, then you’re probably a fan of Chrome’s “Tab Group” feature. While the feature has been around on both desktop and Android for quite some time, the mobile version is getting an ability previously only available on desktop.

It appears Google is starting to roll out single tab groups to the Canary version of Chrome for Android. The feature first appeared in the early build version of the mobile browser back in January, but it was grayed out at the time. In the most recent Canary build, however, the feature is now functional and can be enabled through an experimental flag, according to @Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter).

Once enabled, users can group a single tab by tapping on the three vertical dots. When the drop-down menu appears, you’ll see the “Group tab” option. Selecting the Group tab option will allow the user to pick the tab they want to group, rename the tab group, and more.

The feature is currently only available in Chrome Canary, which means it is still in the early stages. As such, the feature is only meant to be used by developers who are testing out new features for Chrome for Android. It’s unclear when Google could bring it to the stable version of the mobile browser.
