I finished a replay of Portal 2 the other day and I was impressed at how well it still holds up; it's the pinnacle of the puzzle genre to me. The way it respects your time, and keeps you engaged is genius, since it gives the player a reason to want to complete all the puzzles in their way.

The main thing I've been playing is Disco Elysium. I'm not the biggest CRPG person, but Disco Elysium presents itself in such a way that I've been thoroughly enjoying it. It somehow manages to be utterly engaging almost immediately. I really couldn't bring myself to look away from it, and I was utterly enthralled by its writing and atmosphere. I do think getting into the world-building is a tad hard to wrap your head around since this is a fictional town with fictional countries and history. I've had an issue trying to establish that in my head from what the game gives you.

Beyond that, I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've played of Disco Elysium so far. I'd highly recommend playing it but without any prior knowledge. This feels like something you just need to play and experience for yourself. It feels like a visual novel a lot of the time despite being a CRPG, especially since the dice rolls don't feel intrusive. Sometimes you'll have to fail a dice roll in order to figure out what to do next, and I think that just shows how good the game is at putting the player in their world right away while making sure they feel comfortable and not overwhelmed at all. I can't wait to play more of it.

I also intend to play Star Wars: Bounty Hunter's re-release after a friend gifted it as a birthday present, really looking forward to that as well.

I finished 428: Shibuya Scramble's main story and most of its side routes, bonus stories, and bad endings. It's easy to see why Famitsu gave the game a 40/40 review score back in the day; it convinces you to care about all the characters, including the ones that are initially quite irritating, too. The team accomplished that largely through still photos and text; quite the accomplishment. It really goes to show that, no matter how you tell it, a good story can elevate an experience. It must have been a mammoth effort to fill out all those branching storylines on a board (my playing time clocked in at over 30 hours, and I didn't even complete everything).

Now onto another visual novel: Steins;Gate. I first encountered Okabe's story through the anime, when I was much younger. Back then, I was about the same age as the protagonist, and I admired his frenetic, mad scientist energy. Now, playing the game with a couple of years of added life experience, I kind of feel sad when I watch him act out his delusions at the start. It's interesting how the passage of time can change one's perception of a complicated character. It's still a special, if somewhat melancholic experience to revisit this story in a different form, though. When I started up the game for the first time, the distinctive notes of the theme song played, and I had to sit back and soak it all in for a moment. This is going to be quite a ride.

If 7 Days to Die and Half-Life had a baby, it’d be Abiotic Factor. Recently my husband and I have been trying this game out, and we are absolutely loving it! It’s an Early-Access game that’s still in the works, and the Deep Field Games team is actively looking for feedback to improve it. I’ve already gone and convinced a few family members to get it because I was already having so much fun.

As you may have guessed by my description – or from what you've maybe even seen in screenshots or videos – this game is survival-by-crafting. You’re a scientist (or group of scientists) trapped in a research facility, aliens are on the loose, and you’ll need to use everything at your disposal to craft your way to survival. Cook up some dead aliens to keep from starving, get enough sleep, find sources of clean water, and ensure you can find a toilet in time, all while destroying anything in sight that you think you can use to make your next big invention. It may sound simple, but good gods, it is addictive.

I started playing Princess Peach Showtime! and am having a blast. Part of me wants to make some of the cookies that she assembles and bakes in the Festival of Sweets. Also, I can dive into another world with my basic gaming skillset and receive a lot of forgiveness for failing to dodge or jump at the right time.

KinitoPET. Source: IGDB.

Ignas Vieversys

Besides continuously getting my ass handed to me by the creatures of The Realm of Shadow - special shoutout goes to Bayle The Dread, the Brobdingnagian proto dragon, the ugly sibling of Deathwing with broken hitboxes, who made me change my entire gear and took around 40 attempts in total, but rewarded me with one of the most epic boss fights so far (Shadow of the Erdtree players don't miss out on this!) - this month I've been playing KinitoPET.

For those who don't watch Nexpo religiously, KinitoPET is a little horror game inspired by BonziBUDDY, the infamous desktop virtual assistant from the 90s (think Clippy but more sinister and hairy). The game can be finished in an hour or two (there are multiple endings, as per the tradition of other fantastic fourth-wall-breakers like Pony Island and IMSCARED), but the tricks that KinitoPET pulls off in that short time - like turning on your webcam and opening the command prompt - do make you uneasy in the best possible way, especially if you're playing this alone in the dark (my salute to those daredevils). One piece of advice: go into this experience blind. Don't watch any walkthroughs, nor read any reviews - just download KinitoPET, have a glass of holy water by your side (just in case), and start the game.

If you love the cheap thrills of obscure horror games as much as I do, this one will blow your socks off. The most insane part is that KinitoPET was created by a high school student with no prior coding or interactive design experience if we were to believe that one Reddit interview. As a person who went through a game design course myself, to see people work full time on much lesser projects with additional help from experienced developers, I'm both in awe of the young lad and frankly, a bit scared. If he was able to make some players believe that KinitoPET is an actual virus as a first-time developer, who knows what thrilling horrors await us in the future?

Having polished off Dave the Diver not long after the last "Now Playing..." was published, I immediately jumped to another highly acclaimed title in my backlog - Tunic. I'd heard great things about the game while it was still an Xbox console-exclusive title, and I've been dying to get to it ever since it came to PS Plus. I'm happy to say it didn't disappoint, and I quite enjoyed getting one of several endings to the game's story. Though I found the game's main gimmick of playing rather blindly while you discover the instruction manual to be new and refreshing, it led to some WTF moments that seemed too cute by half. The minute-to-minute gameplay was almost always great though, and for me that is what matters most. I enjoyed my time with it and I can't ask more than that.

My most anticipated game of the year was EA Sports College Football '25. As a college football wonk and devotee of the games before their 11-year hiatus, I was beyond excited for the game to return. That said, I've barely played it because I was trying to finish Tunic, which I suppose is quite the recommendation for the diminutive fox and company. Now that I've had time to jump in though, the gridiron simulation is all I had hoped for and more. The on-field gameplay is a bit tougher than I remembered, which is appropriate, as defense can be a challenge even against "lesser" teams both in the game and in real life. Dynasty mode is where I'll spend most of my time, leading my beloved UCF Knights to an eventual College Football Playoff Championship with a side of world domination. Definitely pick it up if you're a fan of the sport.

Last but not least, the horrific reviews of the Borderlands film led me to jump back into Borderlands 2, which I started in 2020 and never finished. So now I'm (hopefully) about to face Handsome Jack for the final time, and I'm remembering why I loved (and occasionally hated) the game. Wave after wave of enemies can feel punishing to the extreme, but blasting them to bits is always mechanically pleasing. With death a mere blip with no real consequences, and each new weapon gives that sweet loot-filled hit of dopamine when you need it most. I wanted an FPS fix in the extreme and Gearbox's sequel hit the spot just right.

This is the same place where you and Blaidd defeated Darrwil, which is quite ironic now that Blaidd has found himself trapped there. Blaidd has helped you out quite a bit throughout your journey, so you should open the Evergaol and free Blaidd or should you not?

Should You Free Blaidd in Elden Ring?

When you find Blaidd trapped in the Forlorn Hound Evergaol, you will have the option to open the Evergaol. If you do, Blaidd will appear and thank you for your help. He’ll tell you that he’s going to see Ranni and check if she’s still safe.

He also says he doesn’t know why exactly Iji trapped him in the Evergaol, but there really aren’t any hard feelings about it. He’ll then head off to Ranni’s Rise, but you’ll have to go visit him again later.

What Happens If You Don’t Free Blaidd?

Elden-Ring-Blaidd-Questline

If you choose not to free Blaidd and leave him in the Evergaol, nothing will happen. You can continue your adventure, delve into Nokron, Eternal City, or go explore elsewhere. Blaidd will escape the Evergaol regardless, and his questline will continue regardless of your choice here.

Your decision here does not matter. Nothing will change in the story, and Blaidd’s full questline will still be available to you no matter what. Most players don’t even come across Blaidd in the Evergaol anyway, instead opting to just explore Nokron and wonder why he’s not there.

Before you can see Blaidd again, you must complete Ranni’s entire questline. There isn’t much left to it at this point, but you will need to seek out some rare items in Nokron and return to Ranni for your final few instructions. After completing Ranni’s storyline, you can find Blaidd at Ranni’s Rise to complete his quest.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

What Level to Defeat Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring?

What’s more mortifying than striding into a boss battle, confident in your finely-tuned gaming abilities, only to have your posterior handed to you? Nothing. And let’s face it, Elden Ring isn’t for the faint of heart. Luckily, FromSoftware has bestowed a gift upon us mortals in the form of Elden Ring Runes, for those who want to take a breather from the chaos. This game boasts a breathtaking open world that’s chock-full of content, but with great freedom comes great responsibility. You might find yourself in a precarious situation, under-leveled and overwhelmed, losing your grip on reality and your controller.

One boss that’s been giving players fits is the notorious Starscourge Radahn. Fear not, my friends, for we’ve got the lowdown on what level you should be at to take on this formidable foe. Make no mistake, Radahn isn’t a pushover. You’ll want to be somewhere in the 70-80 level range if you’re planning to take him on. This will ensure that you’re dealing sufficient damage to the boss while not getting annihilated in one hit. Your health pool and attack power are also important factors to consider, alongside your level. Furthermore, your personal skills and weapon level can make or break your chances in this fight. Keep in mind that the recommended level may vary based on whether you’re fighting Radahn alone or with some backup.

Asking what level to fight Radahn in Elden Ring is a common inquiry among players, and answers can be as diverse as they come. But if you want the real deal, keep reading. We’ve got the lowdown on what level to fight Radahn in Elden Ring, so buckle up and get ready to kick some Radahn butt.

What Level Should I Be Fighting Starscourge Radahn?

Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring is notorious for being one of the game’s hair-pulling difficulty spikes, leaving players teetering on the brink of despair. This boss fight is certainly not for the faint of heart and is sure to give even the most seasoned players a run for their money.

In order to stand a fighting chance against Radahn, we highly recommend that you level up your character to at least 70-80. These levels will serve you well if you invest them wisely in Vigor and Attack Power, tailored to complement your character build. This will not only allow you to deal enough damage to the boss but also give you a much-needed boost to your health and defensive capabilities, giving you a better chance to survive and conquer this formidable foe.

Make no mistake, taking on Starscourge Radahn is no walk in the park, but with the right preparation and strategy, victory is within reach. So, sharpen your blades, hone your skills, and gear up for one of Elden Ring’s most challenging battles yet.

Who is Starscourge Radahn

In the wondrous world of Elden Ring lies a boss that is as elusive as he is difficult – Starscourge Radahn. Situated in the confines of Redmane Castle, this boss is not exactly mandatory, but if you’re looking to unlock one of the game’s endings or complete a few NPC questlines, you’ll have to take him down.

Born to Queen Rennala and Radagon, Radahn is a demi-god by birthright, with the power and prowess to match. During the Shattering, he battled Malenia to a stalemate, showcasing his might in a way that few others could. But despite his impressive pedigree, Radahn’s mind has been ravaged by the Scarlet Rot, driving him into a state of feral madness that we must contend with in battle.

Make no mistake, this boss is not just a test of your combat skills, but also a feast for the eyes. With his stunning visual design and impressive armor set, Radahn is a boss that you won’t soon forget. So, ready your weapons and brace yourself for the fight of your life.

Suggested Level to Fight Radahn

Fighting the mighty Radahn in Elden Ring is not a feat for the faint of heart, but fear not, dear adventurer, for we have a suggestion to level the playing field. While the ideal level for taking on this demi-god boss is certainly subjective, we recommend a range of 70-80 to keep things fair and square. This way, you can enjoy a well-balanced and thrilling fight that won’t feel like a cakewalk or a hopeless endeavor.

Of course, leveling up beyond this range doesn’t necessarily guarantee an easy victory. You see, Radahn is a formidable foe, and his ferocious attacks can catch even the most seasoned players off guard. So, even if you’re at a higher level, you’ll still need to bring your A-game and stay on your toes if you hope to emerge victorious.

All in all, taking on Radahn is a test of your mettle as a warrior, and your level is just one factor in the equation. With the right tactics, equipment, and mindset, you can overcome this challenge and emerge triumphant, no matter what level you’re at.

The Importance of Weapon Level

When it comes to slaying bosses in Elden Ring, your character’s level is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, what truly matters is the level of your weapon, as it determines the amount of punishment you can dish out and take in return.

An upgraded weapon can be your saving grace, not only against the likes of Starscourge Radahn but also every other area and boss in the game. You may have heard tales of lower-level players putting Radahn in his place, while others at level 105 have met their untimely demise at his hands.

A higher-level weapon ensures a fair and balanced battle, providing you with a decent damage output and more powerful weapon skills to help you wriggle out of tight spots – particularly in a fight as intense as Radahn’s. So, don’t overlook the importance of upgrading your weapon, dear warrior, if you wish to emerge victorious in the realm of Elden Ring.

Factors to Consider When Fighting

Playstyle and Character Build

When it comes to facing formidable foes like Radahn, it’s essential to consider your character’s build and playstyle. It’s no secret that Magic builds can act as glass cannons, effortlessly obliterating enemies from a safe distance without breaking a sweat.

On the other hand, pure melee builds have to get up close and personal, quite literally. Engaging in a brawl demands a more generous HP pool to avoid being knocked out in one fell swoop, along with greater attack power if you want to bring down the boss in a reasonable amount of time. So, whether you prefer a magical or physical approach, remember that your build and style can make all the difference in your quest to conquer Elden Ring’s fiercest foes.

Stats Allocation

Stat allocation is a crucial factor to consider when tackling tough bosses like Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring. It’s important to understand that levels don’t necessarily reflect power but rather the number of times you’ve invested Runes into the game’s Base Attributes.

Investing your Stat points wisely can be the deciding factor in your success against Radahn. For instance, a pure Strength player who allocated most of their points towards boosting their Health and Attack Power will likely have an easier time than someone who spread their points across multiple Attributes. So, dear warriors, remember to allocate your Stats strategically to achieve maximum efficiency and conquer the challenges of Elden Ring with ease.

Summons

Prepare for a thrilling and singular experience when facing the Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring. What sets this boss fight apart from the rest is the ability to summon up to five NPCs to join you in battle, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of the encounter. Without giving away any spoilers, the NPCs’ involvement in the fight ties into the game’s ongoing narrative.

There are eight unique NPCs that you can summon for this particular fight, and they can be resummoned if needed. By enlisting the help of these NPCs, you can take on Radahn at a much lower level than if you were to go it alone. With Radahn’s focus divided between multiple targets, your subpar Attributes may be compensated for, making the risk much more manageable. So, don’t hesitate to call upon your NPC allies and face Radahn with confidence.

The Importance of Skill

Hop aboard the git gud express! The concept is simple: Radahn can be faced at any point in the game, depending on your skill level. Believe it or not, some players complete the game without donning a single piece of armor or leveling up.

If you’re a master of Elden Ring, then you may find tackling Starscourge Radahn at a lower level than recommended a piece of cake. On the flip side, for those who haven’t quite mastered the game yet, it may be a struggle. But don’t fret! You can take on Radahn at your own pace, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie. So, grab your controller and show Radahn who’s boss!

Tips to Defeat Starscourge Radahn

In Elden Ring, even the highest-level players can find themselves six feet under if they’re not careful. The ruthless Starscourge Radahn will put your skills to the test, so buckle up and listen up for some valuable tips to survive this boss fight:

  • Make use of the summons: As previously mentioned, you can summon up to five NPCs to help you in battle. This will divide Radahn’s attention and make the fight more manageable.
  • Keep your summons alive: Your NPC allies will only be helpful if they’re alive, so keep an eye on their health and prioritize healing them when needed.
  • Do not get greedy: Radahn hits hard, so don’t get too greedy with your attacks. Be patient and wait for the right opportunity to strike.
  • Maintain a safe distance in the second phase: In the second phase of the fight, Radahn becomes mounted on his horse, making him much more mobile. Keep a safe distance to avoid his attacks and wait for an opening.
  • Move-in after his Hail of Arrows attack and go to town while he is unmounted: When Radahn unleashes a Hail of Arrows attack, it leaves him vulnerable for a short time after. Take advantage of this opportunity to strike while he’s
  • dismounted.
  • Mount your horse: If you’re having trouble avoiding Radahn’s attacks, consider mounting your horse to increase your mobility.
  • A good shield can be better against his arrows than rolling out of harm’s way: Rolling may seem like a good option to avoid Radahn’s arrows, but a good shield can be much more effective in protecting you.
  • Summons make his moveset unpredictable, so soloing can sometimes be better: While summons can be helpful, they can also make Radahn’s moveset unpredictable. Consider soloing the fight if you’re having trouble with your NPC allies.
  • Radahn is weak to Rot: Lastly, Radahn is weak to Rot, so consider using weapons that deal Rot damage to increase your chances of victory.

Remember, the key to defeating Starscourge Radahn is to stay patient, be observant, and most importantly, don’t give up.

Conclusion

Our discussion on the optimal level to confront the Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring has come to a close. We have endeavored to provide a comprehensive analysis of the facts so that you can decide whether to face this formidable foe or not. It must be said that any recommendation regarding a boss’s appropriate level is subjective, and depends on one’s appetite for both risk and reward. However, we have offered a balanced suggestion for those who relish the interplay between pleasure and pain.

We welcome your feedback in the comments section below on the usefulness of this guide. And to all, you Tarnished out there, best of luck in your perilous journeys.

Elden Ring Reaches 750,000 Players On Steam

Elden Ring has been a long time coming, but who would have thought that the hype would be this big?

It’s official: it’s in the papers. Elden Ring is FromSoft’s biggest and most hyped launch to date. The latest game from the iconic studio that brought us the Soulslike, Soulsborne, Soulbornkiro, whatever you’d like to call it, genre has attracted over 750,000 concurrent Steam players. There’s been a spate of negative user reviews generating thanks to its inconsistent PC performance; this success can be even seen in gaming marketplaces that specialize in selling game accounts and other types of services. Publisher Bandai Namco has yet to announce the game’s official launch sales, but we’ve seen massive success just from Steam alone, so it’s easy to assume that the numbers are above 1,000,000 at launch if the PC numbers alone are anything to go by.

Comparing Elden Dark to Other Dark Souls Games

On launch day, Elden Ring hit a peak concurrent player count on Steam of 764,835 players. When you compare that to Dark Souls 3 which had 129,975 players and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice which had an all-time peak of 125,315 players, you can see just how huge these numbers are on PC. If we crunch the numbers, we can see that Elden Ring had nearly six times more concurrent players than Dark Souls 3’s highest ever peak. The player numbers will constantly change on Steam – no game sits at the top forever, after all.

Performance is A Big Issue

It’s not all good news for Elden Ring despite hitting such high numbers. The game has attracted a swathe of negative reviews on Steam thanks to its dubious performance on PC. Digital Foundry’s statement of Elden Ring’s performance being a mixed bag right now is putting it lightly, to say the least. Even with the 1.02 available to download now, PC users can see stutters of up to 250 milliseconds in length when new areas, effects, and enemies appear on the screen. At its worst, Elden Ring players experience “tumbling frame-time issues” that drop the frame rate from 60 to 40. A look at the Steam reviews shows that over 7,000 of them consist of negatives shows that these performance issues are not lost on PC players despite the patch update.

What’s All the Hype About Anyway?

A big part of the hype surrounding Elden Ring is the great track record that Hidetaka Miyazaki (the game’s director) and FromSoftware have had over the best decade. This has built a trusting relationship between fans of the games and the developers, as each new mechanic added to the game before its official launch was received positively.

Another reason why fans are hyped about Elden Ring even after its release is that it’s the spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series due to its graphics, story, and overall medieval setting being the perfect fit for the franchise. Especially since the last FromSoftware title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, was set in Sengoku Era Japan, players were itching for a more Gothic experience featuring magic and greatswords than samurais and katanas.

Lastly, the story is more intricate this time around, as fans will experience a mythos built from the ground up by George R. R. Martin, writer of the novels that the Game of Thrones series was based on.

Final Thoughts

Due to FromSoftware’s attempt at making the game accessible to as many computers as possible, they’ve essentially taken on a situation more difficult than if they were to just leave these PC players behind. Elden Ring is facing serious performance issues on PC to the point that they aren’t just minor inconveniences anymore, leading to a lot of players from that platform selling their game accounts on gaming marketplaces. Almost all GPUs – yes, even the super expensive ones – struggle when going outside into the beautiful horizon but run fine indoors. This is likely due to the game using DirectX 12, a software developed by Microsoft that has been known to produce fluctuations and aggressive stutters in modern games since it takes a different approach to memory management. Variable refresh rate technologies like FreeSync and G-Sync alleviate the issues to some degree, but that’s now how it should be as not everyone has access to those.

It remains to be seen what Bandai Namco does about this situation as the day-one patch didn’t address these issues one bit. This is even more strange if you consider that FromSoftware’s last two games, Sekiro and Dark Souls 3, had no problems across all platforms. In the meantime, there are still a lot of players actively grinding through Elden Ring, even if it currently faces a lot of problems.

To say that Elden Ring’s open world is big is an understatement. The map is so huge it can’t even fit on the entire screen. It’s easy to get lost between the Catacombs, field bosses, and anything else in the Lands Between. FromSoftware basically said, “here’s the game – now you figure out the way.”

That’s a good thing, of course, but some players are having trouble figuring out some things about the map. More specifically, many new players have been wondering what the gold and yellow lines are on the map near the Sites of Grace.

What Do the Gold Lines Mean Near a Site of Grace?

Elden-Ring-Halo-Scythe

The gold lines on the map in Elden Ring point toward your next objective. They’re called the Guidance of Grace in the lore, and they guide the Tarnished on their journey. If you ever find yourself stuck, just follow those lines and you’ll be back on track in no time.

It’s not just limited to the map, either. When you rest at a Site of Grace, some of them will emanate a sort of golden trail of dust through the sky. Not all of them do that, only those that indicate a certain landmark in the game that leads into a possible quest or dungeon ahead will have them. The game doesn’t hold your hand too much in outright giving you some sort of quest log or something in the UI to show you your next destination.

The tradeoff here is that there’s a sense of exploration you should fulfill for tidbits of lore, new wares to collect, and bosses to conquer. These gold lines serve as a bare minimum of leading you in the direction you should go. The choice is yours. You’re not locked out from progressing any further if you don’t follow the lines either.

Elden-Ring-Map-example

Admittedly, it can get confusing if you’re traveling east towards Caelid and start seeing the Sites of Grace show the lines too. The correct way to through the main story of the game is to make your way north from Limgrave, through Stormveil, then the Raya Lucaria Academy, and so forth.

Even when you complete an entire area, those lines will still appear. The only way to really keep track is to use the map’s marker options to indicate if you have cleared an entire area of its boss and one-time pickups.

Elden Ring is out now for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series S/X, and PC.

Best Great Rune in Elden Ring: Ranking All 6 Runes From Worst To Best

Great Runes are an additional consumable that players can use to give themselves a rather significant buff in Elden Ring. The only downsides to them are that you’ll need to use Rune Arcs to activate one every time. They are also lost on death, so reckless players may benefit the least from them.

6. Mohg’s Great Rune

Elden-Ring-Mohg

It’s unfortunate that the Lord of Blood is perhaps one of the hardest bosses in the game and his blessing is nothing particularly rewarding. Mohg’s Great Rune, according to the game’s description, “grants a blessing of blood to phantoms.” In short, this is a PvP item. It’s not yet known if this affects Spirit Ashes, but it works on summoned players when playing online.

The aforementioned “blessing of blood” heals players when their summons kill an enemy. It’s basically a lifesteal Rune that works when the summons do the work. It’s too niche to really recommend for single-player use.

Mohg’s Great Rune is rewarded to you after you defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood at the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, not to be confused with Mohg the Omen in the lower sections of Leyndell. It is to be activated at the Divine Tower of East Altus.

5. Malenia’s Great Rune

Malenia-Blade-of-Miquella-1278x720

Malenia is another extremely brutal boss to fight in Elden Ring. Unfortunately, her Great Rune isn’t all that useful. It grants lifesteal for a short time after taking damage. Lifesteal is extremely strong, but the effect is not permanent. You only have about five seconds before that “short time” runs out. Most of the time, unless you’re playing a tank build, five seconds only gives you enough time to hit an enemy once.

Within five seconds of taking damage, a smart player waits until there’s a safe opening to attack. Being reckless after getting attacked may not be enough to restore enough HP to take the next hit. The life restored cannot exceed that of which you lost, making this not a great choice either. Unless you’re using other equipment to give you passive health regen, this Great Rune can be skipped.

You can obtain Malenia’s Great Rune by defeating her at Miquella’s Haligtree. The Rune itself can be activated at the Isolated Divine Tower.

4. Rykard’s Great Rune

Elden-Ring-Rykard-Boss-Blasphemous-Blade-1278x720

This is where the Great Runes start to be useful. Rykard’s Great Rune is a better variant of Malenia’s Great Rune because you restore 185 health per enemy killed. This works extremely well when clearing mobs. It may not be the best when it comes to bosses, but sometimes, when farming enemies for drops, XP, or getting through tough dungeons, this can be a lifesaver.

Pair this with his signature Blasphemous Blade and a Taker’s Cameo to maximize HP gains. You can basically charge through hordes of enemies without burning through your Crimson Flasks. Of course, you still shouldn’t play recklessly or else you have to pop another Rune Arc to get the effect.

To get Rykard’s Great Rune, you must defeat him at the end of the Volcano Manor questline. You then need to activate the Rune at the Divine Tower of West Altus.

3. Morgott’s Great Rune

Morgott-the-Omen-King

Morgott’s Great Rune serves a better purpose in being an all-rounder choice if you use Rune Arcs. This Rune “greatly raises maximum HP” If your Vigor stat is high, this can possibly prevent getting one-shotted by the next boss you fight.

Morgott’s Great Rune is obtained after defeating him in Leyndell. You’ll have to activate it at the Divine Tower of East Altus.

2. Radahn’s Great Rune

Elden-Ring-Starscourge-Radahn

Starscourge Radahn’s Great Rune is very similar to Morgott’s, but it sacrifices some health gained and allocates that to FP and Stamina. If you’re an all-rounder and need a boost in every other bar you have, this is a strong pick to use your Rune Arcs on.

To obtain this, you’ll have to defeat Radahn, a boss who is considered to be the toughest in the game. Bring his Rune over to the Divine Tower of Caelid to activate it.

1. Godrick’s Great Rune

godrick-elden-ring

Godrick’s Great Rune provides the best benefit to the Tarnished when in use. It’s extremely strong and useful for basically any build. This Great Rune adds 5 levels to each stat of your player level. This includes things like Vigor, Mind, Faith, Dexterity, and so on. It’s essentially a +40 to your character’s level for free.

You’ll need to defeat Godrick the Grafted and bring his Great Rune to the Divine Tower of Limgrave to activate it.

Elden Ring is out now for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series S/X, and PC.

Should You Learn From Sellen?

Sellen-in-a-screencap-from-Elden-Ring

As you begin your quests in Limgrave, you’ll come across Sorceress Sellen in the Waypoint Ruins in the eastern part of West Limgrave. She will appear after defeating Mad Pumpkin Head, and is located near the Site of Grace titled “Waypoint Ruins Cellar. As she sends you on her questline, you’ll fight enemies and fetch items for her, and once you complete this quest, she will open her Sorceries Shop, allowing you to spend Runes to unlock new types of Magic.

For players working on a Magic-based Build, her shop can aid you to get some powerful spells quite early in the game, especially if you’ve tracked down the Scrolls that are required to get some of the better spells, like the Conspectus Scroll to unlock Glintstone Cometshard. If you take the time to help her out, you’ll find yourself rewarded quite well.

However, if you are going for a Melee Build, her unlocks may come to little use for you, unless you are aiming to 100% your run. Her questline does send you to some interesting locations, so it may be worth your time for the chance to explore some new parts of the world, ultimately culminating in you choose if you wish to challenge Sellen to a battle, or assist her in fighting the Witch-Hunter Jerren in the Grand Library.

Choosing to assist Sellen and defeating Jerren will also reward the player with the following items:

  • Eccentric’s Hood
  • Eccentric’s Armor
  • Eccentric’s Breeches
  • Eccentric’s Manchettes

If you instead side with Castellen Jerren and challenge Sellen, you’ll be rewarded with the following:

  • Witch’s Glintstone Crown
  • Sellen’s Bell Bearing

No matter which option you choose, you’ll find out that once you learn from this Sorceress, she’ll be happy to start Sellen you anything you need to help you in your journey and help you learn some great new Magic along the way.

Defeating a main boss in Elden Ring will get you a new Great Rune to use in the game.  These runes bestow great power on your character, but for each rune you collect you will need to climb different towers to activate the rune itself. Once you’ve beaten the first main boss of the game, Godrick the Grafted, you will need to take his Great Rune to the Divine Tower of Limgrave in order to use it.  In this guide we’ll explain how to get to this area in the game.

How To Open the Divine Tower in Limgrave and Activate Godrick’s Rune

Divine-Tower-of-Limgrave-map-from-Elden-Ring The route to the Divine Tower of Limgrave in actually within Stormveil Castle where you origianlly defeated Godrick. To get to the Tower, you’ll need to take a portal from the castle to the tower bridge. For the purpose of this guide we’re going to explain how to get back to this area by backtracking from the Godrick boss fight.  You’ll need to head back to the areas that you just  fought though to make it to the castle gates.  Hopefully you unlocked the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace while making your way to Godrick in the first place.  This one was near the ogre and open area with many soldiers. Backtrack past the ogre in the courtyard area and instead of heading due south which would’ve been the way you approached this area the first time, instead, go left (east) and head down the stairs toward the main courtyard and Stormveil Castle Gate.  At the bottom of the stairs you’ll come to another open area with a ton of guards as well as a Vanguard Lion.  At the bottom of those stairs hook a left and head through the main door past the lion.

How to Open the Divine Tower of Limgrave Path

The easiest way to do this is to try and run past these enemies but it’s also a good opportunity to collect runes so choose to approach it how you wish.  Once you get to the room with the knight statues kneeling you should be safe if noone is on your tail.  Keep heading straight and you will be at the Limgrave Tower Bridge.  Rest at the Site of Grace and then head onward to the tower. You’re not quite out of the clear yet, the long stretch is a straight run to a teleporter that will actually take you to the tower.  You’ll need to make your way past three giants: two wielding axes, and one with a bow and arrow.  The easiest way to get past them is to run straight ahead until you see the teleporter and then use it to go to the Tower.  If you choose to fight, the ranged giant (closest to the teleporter) is going to be able to hit you while you’re fighting the first and second giants – so be prepared for a tough encounter. Divine-Tower-of-Limgrave-from-Elden-Ring If you chose not to fight, and you took the teleporter you are in the clear and you are now at the Divine Tower of Limgrave.  You are in the clear for the time being.  Head up the lift and activate Godrick’s Rune.

Using a bow and arrow or crossbow in Elden Ring can sometimes be a little tricky to understand for new players figuring out the mechanics for the first time.  However, it’s important to know the controls for these weapons as they have the ability to aim and zoom for precision shots.

In this guide we’re going to explain how to aim and zoom with bows and crossbows in Elden Ring.

The Basics of Bows and Crossbows in Elden Ring

Elden-Ring-Switch-Arrows

In order to use a bow or crossbow in Elden Ring you’ll need to have one equipped, obviously. This can be in your left or right hand as your primary or secondary item.  If you are using a bow you will not be able to use any of your secondary weapons like shields in-between your attacks, however, with the crossbow, shields are a bit easier to use.

While it may be obvious to some players, for either of these items you need to also have bolts, arrows, or great arrows equipped so that you have something to shoot.

Assuming that you’ve got all this down: You can shoot the bow, great bow, or crossbow just like you’re using any other weapon.  You can either manually aim a shot or you can lock on to the target and the shot will track the target automatically.

How To Aim With the Bow & Crossbow

Elden-Ring-Halo-Scythe

To properly aim using base PC controls:
Press and hold E and right click to two hand, then hold right click to aim.

To properly aim using a controller:
PS4/5: Press and hold “triangle” to two hand and then use L1 to aim.
Xbox Controller: Press and hold Y and use the right bumper to two hand, then use your left bumper to aim.

Once you bring up the crosshair, you can line-up your shots to take down enemies or shoot down hidden items.

That’s all you need to know about aiming bows and crossbows in Elden Ring.  For more tips on the game, check out our Elden Ring Guides section.

While Elden Ring‘s base game is a masterpiece on its on, the recently released Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has introduced fans of the series to a brand-new environment with new locations, NPCs, weapons, and perhaps most importantly – new bosses.

Building off the lore from the base game and introducing a variety of challenging new mechanics for players to navigate, memorize, and strategize around, the boss roster in Shadow of the Erdtree is nothing to scoff at; but of these new additions, which of these new adversaries stands out for being the best?

Honorable Mention

Bayle-from-Elden-Ring-snarling

Unfortunately, Bayle the Dread is not a remembrance boss in Shadow of the Erdtree, but he’s become such a cultural icon thanks to Igon’s iconic quote: “CURSE YOU, BAYLE!” in addition to the boss fight just all around encompassing the feeling of fighting an ancient, mighty dragon that it’s hard not to give him a shoutout. Not to mention, Bayle has one of the best themes in the entire DLC and excellently written lore than makes felling him all the more satisfying.

10. Scadutree Avatar

The-Scadutree-Avatar-from-Elden-Ring

Despite the fact that the Scadutree Avatar has a very well-designed arena a perfectly orchestrated battle theme, the creature is lacking in the lore department, with what is known about it being mostly left up to presumption.

With three separate phases, the Scaduetree Avatar’s moveset and mechanics can feel clunky, as many of its abilities fail to truly flow with the beast or capture what makes its design so interesting. While being an interesting challenge to go up against, it’s by far the DLC’s weakest Remembrance fight.

9. Putrescent Knight

Putrescent-Knight-from-Elden-Ring

Located in the Fissure Depths, the Putrescent Knight is a hulking mass of rotting flesh dedicated to serving St. Trina. While lacking in the lore department, the Putrescent Knight has an amazing accompanying track when fighting him, and his mechanics can be really fun to learn and strategize around.

Unfortunately, though, the hulking undead knight is overshadowed by the DLC’s other boss battles with fleshed out lore. While fun, the Putrescent Knight lacks the substance to make him a truly memorable foe.

8. Commander Gaius

Commander-Gaius-from-Elden-Ring

A friend to Messmer who was once noted as a legendary military strategist and warrior, Commander Gaius was once a rival to Radahn, and similarly to his friend, is a rather tragic figure in the lore; cursed from his heritage as an Albinauric to someday lose the use of his legs who accompanied Messmer when he left for the Land of Shadow on Marika’s orders.

Gaius’ fight is no joke – it’s easily considered one of the most difficult and frustrating in Shadow of the Erdtree due to his relentless combos. However, despite how frustrating it can be to go against him and his hulking boar companion, his arena looks incredible, and perfectly fits Gaius’ story – even if weaving around the abandoned weaponry can add to potential frustrations when trying to evade his attacks. Plus, the flashy flavor in his abilities make him a memorable foe to take down.

7. Divine Beast Dancing Lion

The-Divine-Dancing-Lion-from-Elden-Ring

Easily possessing one of the best designs and battle themes in the DLC, as well as an incredible introductory cutscene, the Divine Beast Dancing Lion fight is unforgiving mechanically, and at times can feel a bit clunky, even on repeat attempts. Unfortunately, despite the Dancing Lion’s incredible design, the arena the boss is placed in is relatively bland.

Filled with potential due to Divine Beasts being seen as “Messengers of the Heavens” in Elden Ring‘s lore and other intricate bits of design flavor, there were unfortunately too many aspects of the Divine Dancing Beast that caused it to fall flat when compared to other bosses encountered in the DLC.

6. Romina, Saint of the Bud

Romina-Saint-of-the-Bud-from-Elden-Ring

A horrific amalgamation of different insects and humanoid features, Romina can pose a challenge for unprepared players while still being relatively well-balanced. The fight against her is unavoidable, and her lore is condensed compared to other encounters in the DLC.

Something particularly interesting about Romina despite her condensed origin story and lore is how seamlessly she’s integrated with her environment. Located in the Church of the Bud, Romina is an incredibly well-planned boss that clearly had a lot of care put into her design and battle mechanics.

5. Metyr Mother of Fingers

Metyr-Mother-of-Fingers-from-Elden-Ring

One of the more grotesque bosses appearance-wise, Metyr is a visual spectacle of a battle with lore implications that run deep into Marika’s backstory. Thanks to Ymir’s questline, players are finally able to face off against the Mother of Fingers, and it delivered.

Located in an ethereal arena in the Finger Ruins of Miyr, Metyr moves rather slowly, but is capable of creating distance to deliver devestating magic attacks against the player. While her battle is far from being the most difficult in the DLC, the visual flair she provides in addition to being arguably one of the most lore-relevant encounters in the game makes her one of the most memorable.

4. Promised Consort Radahn

Promised-Consort-Radahn-from-Elden-Ring

The official final boss fight of the DLC, the culmination of every quest and encounter the Tarnished has accomplished on their adventure through the Land of Shadows, the battle against the Promised Consort Radahn is nothing to scoff at. In a cinematic confrontation, Miquella, after enchanting Mohg and putting Radahn’s soul into his body, uses him as a “puppet” to fight back against the Tarnished to further his plans to create an “ideal” world using his charms.

Capable of using the same Bloodflame and Gravity Magic, this fight is an uphill battle to say the least. With a flashy moveset in the first phase that morphs into an epic battle against both Radahn and Miquella in the second, the fight is excellently designed, with only a few drawbacks for how overloaded some of the pair’s abilities are.

3. Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame

Midra-Lord-of-Frenzied-Fram-from-Elden-Ring-

Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame is an incredibly interesting and challenging boss fight in Shadow of the Erdtree. After previously attempting to become a Lord of Frenzied Flame and failing, Midra finally succeeds in ascending after coming into contact with the Tarnished. The encounter also provides more insight on the Frenzied Flame from the base game.

The fight poses a good challenge for players, with a strong mixed of ranged and melee abilities that forces players to try and fight him in close-quarters combat. All-in-all, it’s a solid fight that, despite being optional, every player should try at least a few times.

2. Rellana Twin Moon Knight

Rellana-Twin-Moon-Knight-from-Elden-Ring-

Despite being an optional boss in the DLC, Rellana is a battle that every player should experience. Heavily tied to Messmer the Impaler’s lore – even being known as “Messmer’s Sword”. Rellana was once a princess of the Carrion family and is the younger sister of Rennala, who left behind her life to remain at Messmer’s side once he was sent to the Land of Shadow.

The fight against Rellana is one of the game’s flashiest and feels incredibly rewarding. Her abilities and moveset boast incredible visuals that excellent precursor to the battle against Messmer the Impaler.

1. Messmer the Impaler

Messmer-the-Impaler-from-Elden-Ring-

Widely considered the secondary antagonist in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Messmer is a Demi-god and the son of Queen Marika, who was used as a weapon to wage war on any who opposed his mother before being sent to the Land of Shadow. In the lore, Messmer is a shockingly tragic figure who was used by his mother to become a detestable warlord – but he realized this truth too late.

Mechanically, the fight against Messmer is a very fair but extremely challenging fight that tests the player’s ability to memorize his fiery combos. He has two phases, each of which offer insight on his tragedy and his relationship to Marika. His arena is hauntingly gorgeous, and the music that accompanies the fight against him is absolutely perfect, making Messmer hands-down the best Remembrance boss in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Seluvis’s secret room can be found beneath some illusory flooring in between Renna and Ranni’s Rise in the Three Sisters section of Caria Manor. Attacking the pavement in question will open up access to players, letting them travel downward into the basement.

Players will know they are at the correct location of Seluvis’s secret room if they’ve spotted aristocrats wielding staffs nearby. They are not exactly difficult enemies, and appearing in an area that is mostly void of enemies serves more as a tell as opposed to being obstacles in the player’s way. I found it easy to defeat these enemies with a few swings of my sword.

Check out the image below for the exact location of Seluvis’s basement:

Elden-Ring-Seluvis-Secret-Puppet-Room-Map

Make sure to avoid the giant dragon in the area unless you feel confident enough to take it down. I made the mistake of getting too close and having to start over from the last Site of Grace after dying.

After venturing into Seluvis’s secret room, players should immediately be able to ascertain why exactly it is that Seluvis has entrusted them with the duties of delivering potions to other individuals and the potential consequence of such deeds. Littered about the grounds of Seluvis’s basement are motionless husks of test subjects Seluvis has conducted experimented upon. This matter is only made more apparent by the illusionary wall at the end of Seluvis’s secret room, depicting the outcome of the player’s decision regarding their potion delivery quest.

Now that players are made aware of the goings-on beneath the ground of the Three Sisters, they’re free to use that knowledge as leverage. Head into Seluvis’s Rise and converse with Seluvis; a new dialogue option should have opened up that would allow players to inquire why Seluvis’s secret room even exists. Seluvis, upon hearing such inquiries, will scold the player for their breach of personal privacy but will acquiesce to the player’s demands for a puppet if asked.

Seluvis will give players the option to pick from his collection freely. The choices available include Finger Maiden Therolina Puppet, Jarwight Puppet, and Dolores the Sleeping Arrow Puppet. I recommend picking Jarwight Puppet, which I found to be the strongest out of the options.

Players don’t have to contemplate their choices too much if they’ve collected starlight shards during their exploration of the Lands Between, since the remaining puppets will be made available to the player later down the line, with starlight shards being the trading currency.

Can You Miss The Seluvis Storyline?

Seluvis-from-Elden-Ring-wearing-a-blue-and-gold-hat

It is important to note that this opportunity to confront Seluvis about his puppet room will become void after substantial progression is made through Ranni’s storyline. If the player’s already acquired the secret treasure of Nokron as Ranni desired, Seluvis will be found dead at his tower, with his corpse lootable for the Preceptor Set and his Bell Bearing containing the sorceries you’ve yet to purchase. After the fact, his corpse can still be interacted with as a way for players to obtain puppets, again, using starlight shards. Players should also check up on Pidia, as there’s some event that’s also occurred on his end.

What’s In Seluvis’s Basement?

Aside from Seluvis’s shop and secret shop, players can also find the following items:

  • Memory Stone
  • Finger Maiden Therolina Puppet
  • Jarwight Puppet
  • Seluvis’s Potion
  • Seluvis’s Bell Bearing
  • Seluvis’s Introduction

What Can You Buy from Seluvis in Elden Ring?

Who is Preceptor Seluvis in Elden Ring?

Preceptor Seluvis is a mysterious figure in Elden Ring, serving Ranni the Witch. Although this sorcerer will help you by providing Ashes and Sorceries, he is anything but thrilled by his mistress’s decision to enlist “a Tarnished like you”.

Elden Ring is full of little side quests that further unravel a detailed story that plays some part in the grand scheme of things. The errand with the Primal Glintstone is no different. Here is everything we know about the Primal Glintstone in Elden Ring and how to use it. The starting place to use the Primal Glintstone in Elden Ring is at the Three Sisters, which is west of Caria Manor in Liurnia of the Lakes. More specifically, you’ll need to start this at Ranni’s Rise. This area is only accessible if you have defeated Royal Knight Loretta. You will also need to have defeated Starscourge Radahn to access this quest. It may help you to also find Seluvis’s Secret Puppet Room while you are in this region. Once you are there, here are the steps you need to follow in order to use the Primal Glintstone in Elden Ring.

How To Use the Primal Glintstone

Starting at the Site of Grace, head left down the stairs and out of the tower. Once you are outside, head northeast towards the stone arches. In between the stone arches, perform a ground attack to reveal secret stairs that lead down. Head down and reach the main room with blue crystals and a few bodies. At the back of the room, attack the back wall that has branches on it to reveal another hidden room. Press “Transplant Primal Glintstone” and talk with the woman. Best-Daggers-in-Elden-Ring The next location of this wild goose chase is the Witchbane Ruins, which is south at the Weeping Peninsula south of the Fourth Church of Marika. This is where Sellen’s original body was. You’ll need to make your way to the bottom where you’ll talk to the person you spoke with before the Festival before defeating Starscourge Radahn. Apparently, Sellen was the most powerful and dangerous sorcerer ever and you just used the Primal Glintstone to give her a new body. And that is the end of the Primal Glintstone quest. Though there doesn’t seem to be any physical rewards from this quest as of writing this, more evidence may come out as time passes. Plus, it is unclear what either helping Sellen with the Primal Glintstone or going against her has to do with anything. download-3 In the meantime, be sure to check out our Elden Ring guides. We cover everything from quests, weapons, items, bosses, and much more. Elden Ring is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Some messages are placed in Elden Ring by FromSoftware as hints toward secrets, like the one in the Royal Capital Leyndell. After defeating Godfrey, you will find a statue with the following message: “Regression alone reveals secrets.” Here’s how to solve the Regression Alone Reveals Secrets puzzle in Elden Ring.

How to Solve the Regression Alone Reveals Secrets Puzzle

Elden Ring really enjoys giving their players open-ended puzzles. Just like in Chelona’s Rise, you are given a single line to work with and nothing else. It can be quite difficult to figure out what you need to do when all you are told is “Regression alone reveals secrets”.

Is it telling you that you need to go back alone or maybe you need to do the opposite, so go forward with someone? Luckily the answer is quite simple. If you’re not an Incantation user, you may have a bit of trouble solving the puzzle.

Placidusaxs-Ruin-Elden-Ring

In order to reveal the secret, you will need to use the Law of Regression Incantation. If you don’t have it you can pick it up from any Incantation vendor that you give the Golden Order Principia prayerbook to. Once you have the incantation, you will need 37 Intelligence to equip and use it. If you don’t have the Intelligence, you will either need to respec at Rennala in the Grand Library or level up until you get 37 Intelligence.

With the Law of Regression Incantation equipped, you will need to go back to the statue and simply cast the Incantation in front of it. The reward you will get for solving this riddle is a huge lore revelation. If you were looking for some super-powerful weapon or spell, you will be disappointed. However, if you want to know more about the story of Elden Ring as you play along then you can’t miss this.

How to Get the Golden Order Principia Prayerbook for the Law of Regression Incantion

Players must acquire the Golden Order Principia prayerbook to get the Law of Regression Incantation. Players can find this book by fast-traveling to the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace and reaching the top level.

Once at the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace, go outside to the right of the Site of Grace and walk up the large tree root to get to the balcony. Once your on the balcony, head outside the door and immediately take a left and jump onto the roof of the building. Here you will find an open window, jump through this window, and you’ll find another giant tree root. Walk across this tree root to find the Golden Order Principia Prayerbook on the hanging chair.

As you work to complete Ranni the Witch’s massive sidequest in Elden Ring, you will find yourself working alongside the half-wolf warrior Blaidd. After the two of you take down Starscoruge Radahn at Redmane Castle, a falling meteorite will reveal the path to Nokron, the Eternal City.

Before he departs, Blaidd asks you to meet him “where the falling star bit the Earth”. However, Blaidd will not be in the Eternal City when you go to look for him. Here’s how to find Blaidd in Nokron in Elden Ring.

Where Is Blaidd In Nokron?

Elden-Ring-Blaidd-official-screenshot-of-Blaidd-holding-a-large-blade-while-standing-in-front-of-the-Erdtree
Image via FromSoftware

Elden Ring is a game where even basic instructions from NPCs can be cryptic or misleading. Unlike the previous moments when Blaidd would ask for you to meet him somewhere, like the Siofra River beneath Limgrave and Caelid, Blaidd will not be in Nokron when you go to look for him after defeating Radahn. However, there is an excellent reason why Blaidd is not able to meet you at the Eternal City, as he has found himself in a somewhat awkward situation.

Return to the Forlorn Hound Evergaol in Limgrave where you should have fought the Bloodhound Knight Darriwil alongside Blaidd earlier in the story. As you approach, you’ll hear the signature wolf howl that signals Blaidd is nearby, followed by the wolfman telling the Tarnished that he’s been trapped by Iji. Note: You can only progress Blaidd’s questline if you agree to help him break free. Once you’ve freed him by interacting with the Evergoal, a grateful Blaidd will depart to discover why Iji has seemingly betrayed Ranni’s cause, promising to meet you in Nokron afterward.

Elden-Ring-Darriwil-Map-Location
Image: Attack of the Fanboy

Unfortunately, Blaidd never makes it to Nokron. If you confront Blacksmith Iji yourself at the Road to the Manor Site of Grace in Liurnia, he will reveal that he imprisoned Blaidd to keep him from going feral, which he is fated to do. At this point, you must complete the rest of Ranni’s quest before interacting with Blaidd again.

Once you have finished Ranni’s questline, you can find Blaidd one last time at Ranni’s Rise, surrounded by the corpses of Black Knife assassins sent to kill Ranni and consumed by an animalistic fury. Lost in his madness, Blaidd will mistake you as a threat to Ranni and attack you, leaving you with no choice but to put him out of his misery.

I always get lost in games like Elden Ring and Dark Souls. The impossible architecture, the improbable geography and the way that the levels twist and turn and fold back in on themselves really muddles my head and stops me from being able to visualise the locations properly. Put me in those same places in VR though and suddenly, because it feels like I'm actually there, their spaces make so much more sense. The depth, the distance, the perspective, every visual trick that VR provides makes From's abstract scenery much easier for my brain to understand.

Not only that though, VR also allows me to appreciate the finer details of the game's assets. Little bits of stitching on a robe, the thin whisps of incense rising from a burner, these are things I'd just blunder right past without noticing in flat. Which leads me nicely to today's VR Corner, in which I take a leisurely trot around Elden Rings' Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in VR!

Thanks to the most recent update for Luke Ross' REAL VR mod, I was able to toggle on a 'tourism' mode and become invisible to all the enemies in the Lands of Shadow. That way I could really drink in the visuals and enjoy the scenery of Shadow of the Erdtree without worrying about getting a foot to the face from a Furnace Golem (until I turned tourism mode off specifically for that purpose!).

It includes two new inventory features: a recent items tab, and exclamation marks above new items. They're game changers.

"Leaving your Steam Deck inactive for more than five minutes may stop the game from accepting inputs. We apologise for inconvenience." For what it's worth, I left Elden Ring running for multiple five-minute windows in the interests of science and had no problem resuming each time - so it's possible this isn't an especially widespread issue.

Elden Ring's big new base game patch finally lets you summon Torrent to fight the Elden Beast

With Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC mere hours away from release, you might think there's not much FromSoftware could possibly do to refocus your excitement on the base game. But Elden Ring's previously promised new 1.12 update is now here, and it's already caused a bit of a flutter among fans - not least because it finally lets you take your trusty steed Torrent into the base game's concluding Elden Beast boss fight.

Now, I'll readily admit I haven't fought the Elden Beast myself - the short explanation being my wildly misguided decision to do a melee-only first run-through and, uh, Malenia - but even I'm aware of the boss' notoriety. Not due to its difficult, mind, but because it teleports itself around an arena so massive, players have frequently found the ensuing on-foot chase-the-monster action utterly exhausting. This Reddit thread from two years ago called it the "single worst designed boss" in Elden Ring, and, well, it's a fairly common opinion.

Plenty of people have speculated the Elden Beast was originally designed to be tackled on the back of Torrent given its cavernous arena - and wondered why everybody's favourite goat-horse wasn't accessible in the final release version - but, some two years on, he's finally here. "Added new feature to summon spectral steed during the Elden Beast boss battle", explains today's 1.12 patch notes - and the Elden Ring fanbase rises for thunderous applause.

My first steps into the Shadow Realm are with bare feet and an empty head. After reaching out to Mohg's crusty egg, I materialise in a vast, rolling field dotted with ruins. In the distance is a dimmed, sickly twin of the Erdtree ringed by shadowy drapes. It takes a minute to remember my buttons, but I summon Torrent to sprint through the long grass like a dog being let off the leash, and almost immediately experience death from above – some gnarled freak just two-shot me into the dirt. It takes a while to get a rhythm going again, and sort out whatever I was trying to do with my NG+ build. I decide for the sake of efficiency to stick to my Moonveil/Carian Glintstone Staff setup, because one does not simply walk into a FromSoft DLC.

It takes more time to feel at home again, but soon I'm puncturing hearts and obliterating minds, executing small huddles of gibbering NPCs as they pray, finding ways to slip past hard-hitting knights. Everyone I meet is all about Miquella, and it's a lot, but such is the way of the cult. Miquella has left crosses scattered about the Shadow Realm for his devotees, to denote where he has shed parts of himself and his flesh; Jesus himself couldn't have pulled off this kind of postmodern brand campaign.

Eventually I find myself in the Specimen Storehouse, which is in many ways a classic convoluted FromSoft library/lab level, and perfectly in line with Elden Ring's weird fascination with eugenics and taxonomy. There are many artefacts here, including a preserved giant suspended face-down from the ceiling, a waistcloth draped over his rump. As soon as I see him, I am seized with wild Miquellan fervour and run behind him to write "hole ahead." I am the first to write this here; I am message-seeding for the most prominent hole in the game like an enterprising SEO writer. Later, as I'm about to get evaporated by a boss, my message gets a "like" that saves my life. We're so f***ing back.

Mass layoffs at FromSoftware won't happen "as long as this company is my responsibility", says Miyazaki

Elden Ring creator and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has said mass layoffs won't happen at the studio "as long as this company is my responsibility".

Speaking to PC Gamer, Miyazaki discussed layoffs across the games industry, in particular the number of studios being closed under Embracer.

"Speaking to myself and this company, I want to say that this is not something I would wish on the staff at FromSoftware in a million years," said Miyazaki. "I'm pretty sure our parent company Kadokawa understands that and shares that view."

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a chance to return to the real game FromSoftware is always secretly playing

17. Červen 2024 v 12:23

One of those rare clarifying moments in my life came when I was told that the whale in Moby Dick didn't symbolise anything. Or rather, it didn't symbolise any one single thing in a fixed and coherent way. The whale might symbolise a handful of things, and those things might contradict one another and you'd just have to live with it. Also the whale was simultaneously a whale - no just or merely a whale, because there is never anything "mere" to be had when a whale is involved.

This was a brilliant thing to learn, and I still think about it often. Symbolism and things like that were very exciting when I was first learning about art and literature, but the danger, I guess, is that they become binary, a kind of substitution cypher. If the whale is a single thing, then Moby Dick is a puzzle that can be solved and we can all move on to other things. But it's not a single thing. It contains multitudes, to borrow a handy phrase from a contemporary of Melville. This frees it and sets it loose in the wild oceans of the mind. It is forever a thing of inference and speculation, of contradiction and dark wonder.

I may have written about this before. No bother. At the moment, anyway, these thoughts very much remind me of Elden Ring, which is getting a DLC this week in the shape of Shadow of the Erdtree. Inference and speculation, contradiction and dark wonder. I have my own relationship with Elden Ring, as I do with almost all FromSoftware games. I have played them a bit, some of them really quite a bit, and always enthusiastically. And then I have inevitably stalled on a skill issue or a simple matter of cognitive overload: too many threads to keep track of, so when I step away for a week or two, further progress becomes unthinkable. But this is only part of my relationship with these games, and it may actually be the weaker part. I love FromSoftware stuff and I think I love it passionately. I just love to talk about it, think about it, and most of all hear about it.

Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts for Unlocking Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

  • Will Tuttle
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Hero

The day is nearly upon us, Tarnished: Elden Ring’s largest and, sadly, final expansion launches on June 21. With tons of new locations, weapons, armor, and bosses spanning dozens of hours, Shadow of the Erdtree is everything Elden Ring fans could have hoped for. There’s just one caveat: you need to have progressed far enough into the base game to actually play it.

Since Shadow of the Erdtree fits neatly into the existing Elden Ring lore (and adeptly expands upon it while still leaving a hint of mystery), lowly Tarnished are required to meet and defeat a couple of the key players, Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, before venturing into the Shadow Realm. We’ll give you some pointers to getting to them as quickly as possible, but it’ll still be up to you to beat them. (Need help defeating Elden Ring bosses? Hit up KingTut33 on Xbox Live and I’ll happily add you to my list of satisfied Tarnished.)

Starscourge Radahn (Normal Method)

Although you can technically fight these two bosses in whichever order you want, it make sense to start with Radahn. Radahn is a tough boss that is ultimately located in Redmane Castle in southeastern Caelid (yes, the red rot area), but only after you unlock the Radahn Festival. There are a number of methods to doing this. The most straightforward method involves playing through the story as the developers intended, beginning with battling through Stormveil Castle and defeating Godrick the Grafted.

After he’s down, continue on to the Liurnia of the Lakes region, specifically the Raya Lucaria Academy towering above it in the center of the map. Here, you’ll need to fight your way through magic-wielders galore (this is a wizarding school, after all) and platform your way up some massive lifts to gradually make your way to the boss awaiting you at the top. Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon isn’t the most challenging fight in Elden Ring, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable.

Once you’ve beaten both Godrick and Rennala, you can make your way to Redmane Castle in Caelid to begin the Radahn Festival and take on this tough boss with or without the help of the many summons available to you. What would you expect at a festival dedicated to defeating a powerful boss?

Starscourge Radahn (Fast and Easy Method)

Don’t feel like taking your time and making your way through the game’s golden path naturally? Try this shortcut, which cuts about 20 hours of play down to about two hours.

The Festival of Radahn is triggered by doing certain things in the game. Defeating Godrick and Rennala is the way most players will be able to access it, but you can also activate any Site of Grace in the amber fields of Altus Plateau after getting the right and left halves of the Dectus Medallion and taking the Dectus lift up. So where do you get those, you might ask?

The first (left) side of the medallion is found in Fort Haight in the starting area of Limgrave, only a few minutes ride from your first site of grace. Even better, you don’t actually need to fight any of the enemies! You can run right in, grab the medallion half, and run right out (or die and respawn). Best of all, you can do the same thing when you’re grabbing the right half of the medallion, which is located in Fort Faroth in northern Caelid.

After you’ve grabbed both halves, just head to the Dectus Lift at the north end of Liurnia (on Bellum Highway) and follow the “hoist medallion” prompt. When you’re at the top, ride straight north for a moment and you’ll find a site of grace.

Now it’s on to Radahn!

Mohg, Lord of Blood (Normal Method)

Here’s where things get a little trickier. Even the “normal” method for accessing Mohg is a bit of a challenge and is pretty far into the game (before I dive into the details, there is one important note: This boss is not the same as Mohg, The Blood Omen, who is located in the sewers of Leyndell). To get to Mohg’s home, Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, you’ll need to play through a good chunk of the game. Following the so-called golden path of the story, you’ll need to defeat all of the main bosses through Morgott, the Omen King, who is located in the city of Leyndell.

Once Morgott has been downed, you’ll be able to access the Grand Lift of Rold, which will take you up to the snow-covered area called the Forbidden Lands. There’s one twist here: the western part of the Forbidden Lands, called the Consecrated Snowfields, is hidden and requires another special, split medallion. The first part of the medallion is found at Castle Sol in the northern area of the Forbidden Lands and requires you to beat the tough Commander Niall boss to get it.

The other half of the medallion can be found back in southwest Liurnia in an area called Village of the Albinaurics. This can be a little tough to spot at first, as it’s under a massive overhang in the dark (it’s not quite a cave, but it’s not not a cave either). As you work your way through the Village, you’ll hear some moaning coming from a large jar. Roll through it to meet Albus, who gives you the other half of the medallion.

Now that you’ve got both halves, head back to the Grand Lift of Rold. There’s now a second option when you hit the lift that says, “hoist secret medallion”. When you’re standing on the lift platform, press right on the D-pad to see the secret medallion option. Now that you’re up in the Consecrated Showfields, find a site of grace and make your way to the southwest part of the area.

After defeating a bleed-inflicting Sanguine Noble and exploring through the ruins, you’ll find a blood-soaked portal that will take you to Mohg’s area. You’ll still need to fight through his mausoleum to get to Mohg, but it’s not too tough given the level you’ll probably be at.

Mohg, Lord of Blood (Fast-ish and Easy-ish Method)

Don’t feel like playing through 40+ hours to make your way to Mohg’s secret palace the more straightforward (yet still quite labyrinthine) way? There’s another method that you can do right from the start. The first NPC you meet when you come up the elevator to Limgrave, White Mask Varre, is the key to this method.

After you talk to Varre the first time, you’ll need to play the game as normal and defeat Godrick. Once he’s down, Varre will move to the Rose Church in Liurnia, which is on a small island in the western part of the lake. Speaking to Varre there will give you the option to answer that something seems off with the Two Fingers. Doing so will cause Varre to give you several Festering Bloody Fingers, which you can (and should) use to invade other players’ games. You only need to invade their game, not beat or even fight them. Once you invade, just use the Finger Severer to leave and return to your world.

Once you’ve gotten the three invasions done, speak to Varre again and he will reveal himself to be a servant of Mohg and invite you to join the Knights of Luminary Mohg. Respond with the “Anoint me” options and he’ll then give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor item, which you’ll need to soak in the blood of a maiden.

The easiest place to find an already-dead maiden is in The Church of Inhibition. This is located in the northeast corner of Liurnia above the Frenzied Flame Village. Just stroll up to the maiden and select the prompt to soak the Lord of Blood’s Favor. (Note that you can also kill Hyetta, who you’ll meet right next to the first site of grace in Liurnia after clearing Stormveil Castle. However, since she’s also a quest and item giver, it’s not recommended that you do this.)

Whichever source of blood you decide on, you’ll need to return to Varre yet again to give him the blood-soaked Favor. He finally inducts you into the Order and take your finger for good measure, leaving you with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. Finally! You can now use this item to be teleported to Mohgwyn’s Palace. You can either sprint or fight your way through any enemies you encounter to finally make it to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint site of grace, where you can prep for your battle with Mohg.

Touch the Withered Arm

After you’ve defeated both Radahn and Mohg, either in a 3-4 hours using the “quick” methods listed above or in 40+ hours using the longer methods, all you need to do to access the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC content is touch the withered arm hanging out of the cocoon in the area in which you defeated Mohg. Best of luck in the Shadow Realm, Tarnished!

(Once again, if you’re having any trouble defeating Radahn, Mohg, or any of the other dozens of bosses in Elden Ring OR Shadow of the Erdtree, drop KingTut33 a line on Xbox Live and I’ll do my best to help!)

Best Elden Ring build

It’s an exciting weekend! Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is live, giving us an excuse to head into the Lands Between and to the Land of Shadow. New challenges await, basically. So, as we all prepare to dive back in, let’s each share what we consider our best Elden Ring build. Maybe it can help us with different ideas or to overcome certain bosses!

I'd been trying to move away from sword and board builds in soulslikes, but Elden Ring hit me with the double whammy of timed blocks and the gorgeous looking Sword of Night and Flame. It requires a big investment into a whole spread of stats which isn't ideal, but that's a price I'm willing to pay to shoot lasers AND fire waves. — Elliot

I feel like I need to preface this by apologizing before revealing that I am one of those players that dual wields the Moonveil and the Meteoric Ore Blade katanas. And when not throwing magic lasers from my sword and using gravity to destabilize enemies, I like to use a vast array of magic spells to keep enemies at bay. Or... just simply throw a laser beam for good measure. — Daniel

I am nothing if not predictable. Even in my attempts to play a Souls-esque game in a new way led me back to a Big Sword and Bigger Flips. Between the Ruin Greatsword, the classic Greatsword, the Royal Greatsword, and the Moonlight Greatsword: I found myself holding two colossal greatswords enchanted with ice as extra spice. That, combined with the intense poise damage from the jump attacks, made my journey through The Lands Between less Berserk and more Moe Szyslak. I gotta tell you, it was pretty terrific. — John
