Galaxy A54 gets One UI 6.1 update sans many AI features

The One UI 6.1 update is now live (via @tarunvats33) for the Galaxy A54 (Galaxy Quantum 4) in South Korea. It is a big update and comes with firmware version A546SKSU4CXDC. It doesn't bring the May 2024 security patch, though. If you have a Galaxy A54 and live in South Korea, you can now download and install the new update by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, and tapping Download and install.

You can watch many of the One UI 6.1 update features in our in-depth video below. The story continues after the video.

Since the update has been released to the Galaxy A54 in South Korea, we expect it to hit the servers in other regions, including Asia and Europe, soon.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Render 03

According to a new report from TheElec, Samsung is reexamining its plans to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 this year. The South Korean firm reportedly planned to launch the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, it is said to have lacked the digitizer required for S Pen functionality, which means it lacked S Pen compatibility. The company is said to have recently completed the testing of the device, featuring an IPX8 rating and 200,000 folds rating, but it wasn't any thinner than foldable phones from rival Chinese firms. The mass production of Galaxy Z Fold 6 components is scheduled to start this month.

Due to insufficient product differentiation and market uncertainties, Samsung reportedly plans to cancel its launch. Per the report, only the standard Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be launched.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 7 could be launched in 2025

According to the report, Samsung plans to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 7 version next year. While the company's overall smartphone market share is less than 1% in China, its foldable smartphone market share is in the double digits. So, Samsung is trying to increase its market share with cheaper foldable phones.

Samsung MX CEO TM Roh said that over 100 million foldable phones could be shipped annually in the next five years. However, the company has fallen behind in the race. Foldable phones from Chinese firms have bigger and brighter screens, bigger camera sensors, bigger batteries, and faster charging. The company plans to be more competitive by releasing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with better cameras, a thinner body, and improved durability.

While both chips will most likely be quite powerful, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is rumored to feature an extremely powerful GPU.

Galaxy S25 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 might be able to run Genshin Impact at 1080p resolution

According to a report from reliable tipster Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip has an exceptionally powerful GPU for enhanced graphics performance. The Qualcomm chip can reportedly run Genshin Impact at the native 1080p resolution. If you don't know already, Genshin Impact is widely regarded as the most graphically intensive smartphone game. Right now, the game is said to be running at 720p resolution by default, and even then, many phones struggle to maintain the 60fps frame rate mark with graphics quality set to the highest.

Watch our review of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, in the video below.

Qualcomm has apparently sped up the development of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and is targeting its launch on October 1, 2024. This upcoming flagship chip is said to be manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process and feature Qualcomm's custom CPU core called Oryon. These CPU cores are already used in the Snapdragon X Elite chip made for ARM Windows laptops. Since the company has already showcased the Snapdragon X Elite's performance, we can also expect impressive performance from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The only doubt remains regarding its power efficiency. Some rumors claim that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 isn't as efficient as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The first phone to launch featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is the Xiaomi 14, which could be unveiled in mid-October 2024. Some Galaxy S25 units are expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which will likely be announced in early January 2025. Besides the new design and higher performance, the Galaxy S25 is rumored to bring improved camera sensors.

Many people have been complaining that after installing the previous update on their Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, the battery life of the three devices has decreased. Sadly, the latest update doesn’t seem to carry a fix for that issue. We expect Samsung to release this update in the remaining regions in the next couple of weeks.

The One UI 6.1 update brings several new features, some of which are powered by Galaxy AI. Those features include Circle to Search, AI-powered image editing recommendations, copying objects from one image and pasting to another, more accurate image clipping, improved search in the Gallery app, and the ability to change the playback speed of certain parts of a video. The update also brings the new Quick Share feature, locate your devices from the dedicated Samsung Find app, share your location with others, and sync Samsung Internet tab groups with other devices. Samsung Cloud offers enhanced data protection, while Samsung Wallet now supports passkeys.

If you want to upgrade from your Galaxy S21, look at the Galaxy S23 or the Galaxy S23+ in our video below. Both phones offer brighter screens, faster processing, better cameras, and longer battery life than the Galaxy S21.

In Samsung Health, you can compete with yourself by comparing your workout results against your previous records. You can have more daily targets, including active hours and floors climbed. Women can record moods and physical symptoms while tracking their menstrual cycles in Samsung Health.

With One UI 6.1, Microphone Modes and Video Call Effects are easier to access. The Weather widget offers more information. You can open all minimized apps at once and input text using voice without leaving the keyboard. There are more ways to protect your Galaxy S21's battery while charging. The Finder screen now offers matching results from the web via Google Search. The update also adds the Google Messages app if it wasn't present.

120Hz displays are quite common on smartphones these days, but there are very few games that support running at that frame rate. PUBG: Battlegrounds, one of the most popular mobile games of all time, is one such title. It came out on Android (and iOS) six years ago, and to this day, it is limited to a 90 fps frame rate.

Story continues after the video

But that's set to change this month. A lot of PUBG players, including those who own a recent flagship Galaxy phone, will soon be able to battle it out at a smooth 120 fps.

PUBG is set to get a new update on May 13 that will add a 120 fps mode, and Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S24 series, the Galaxy S23 series, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be among the list of devices that will support that mode.

Samsung also says that it has worked with Tencent, the game's developer, on optimizing performance on these devices. The optimizations will be included in the latest version of the Game Optimization Service (GOS) and Game Booster app that comes installed on Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

PUBG is a graphically demanding game, so those optimizations will come in handy, especially for keeping temperatures in check. The optimizations will be complemented by the massive vapor cooling chambers inside the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, though we will have to wait and see how long these devices will be able to sustain good performance when running in the 120 fps mode.

It also remains to be seen if other flagship Galaxy phones will receive support for the 120 fps option in PUBG. Samsung hasn't said anything on the matter for now, so even if the company intends to bring older devices into the fold, it could take a while.

Galaxy S21 One UI 6.1 update debuts in the USA

The USA is the first market where the Galaxy S21 FE has received the One UI 6.1 update. The update only seems available for those using the phone on T-Mobile's network, but we can expect a rollout for other carrier variants and unlocked units soon. It shouldn't take long for the update to go live in other markets, either.

Samsung could also start making One UI 6.1 available for mid-range devices like the Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A53 in the next few days. However, there is no official confirmation from the Korean giant, only hints provided by a Canadian carrier, so we would suggest keeping your expectations in check until the rollout actually begins.

If you own a Galaxy S21 FE, you can discover all that the One UI 6.1 update brings to your phone in the official changelog available here. Just don't expect any of the fancy Galaxy AI features. Google's Circle to Search is the only major AI feature that One UI 6.1 brings to flagship Galaxy phones launched in 2021.

To download the One UI 6.1 update, open the Settings app on your phone, select Software update, then tap Download and install. Considering the issues Galaxy S22 owners faced with One UI 6.1, you may want to follow some of the advice here before installing the update on your S21 FE.

Apple's latest iPad Pros announced earlier this week must look quite interesting even for Samsung. The new models are the industry's first to use Tandem OLED displays supplied by the Korean tech giant (and LGD) and boast a few other innovations that garnered attention in the media.

A few examples are that the new iPad Pros are the thinnest Apple products ever made; they offer compatibility with a new high-tech Pencil Pro; their new M4 chip promises massive performance and efficiency gains; and these new iPad Pros boast a better thermal design.

Speaking of the thermal design, it is one of the most intriguing bits Apple revealed at its launch event. The tech giant thought of a clever and unique way to improve the iPad Pro's cooling through the Apple logo by turning it into a passive cooling element.

New iPad Pro's Apple logo acts as a heatsink

Apple's new iPad Pros boast more performance and better thermal management than previous models. In part, this is thanks to two new upgrades that facilitate heat dissipation.

First, Apple claims it has incorporated graphite sheets into the new iPad Pro's housing. Second, the Apple logo itself, located at the back of the iPad Pros, is now a part of the cooling design.

The Apple logo emblazoned on the new iPad Pros is made of copper. It acts as a heatsink that helps dissipate and transfer heat from the M4 chip and internal components.

Story continues after the video…

Apple claims the new iPad Pros offer 20% better cooling but hasn't revealed precisely how much this new copper logo contributes to these gains. Nevertheless, it seems a creative way to add functionality to the iconic Apple logo.

Unlike the “Samsung” letters engraved on the Galaxy Tab S9 series' back panels, the iPad Pro's Apple logo is more of a structural component with cooling properties, at least, according to Apple.

But even if we assume that the copper logo provides minimal cooling and very little real-world benefits, it is very clever marketing, if nothing else.
