The best laptops for college students

Whether you’re working on an essay, doing research for a paper or just need some downtime streaming your favorite show - a good laptop is a sensible investment for every college student. The best laptop for college doesn’t have to push the envelope with the latest graphics card and processor, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg. Sure, the best laptops come in all shapes and sizes and range in price, but college students don’t need a power-hungry machine to support their needs. The best laptop for college is ideally thin and lightweight, and provides enough battery to last all day without having to be tethered to the wall. No matter what you’re studying, we’ve researched and tested a range of laptops for you to consider as you decide which is the best laptop for college for you.

What to consider in your next laptop for college

It’s important to consider your major and what you need your laptop to do before deciding on the best laptop for college. For example, if you’re a liberal arts major and will mostly be writing or making presentations, you don’t need an expensive system with a discrete graphics card. Alternatively, if you’re a film major who might need to render videos on a regular basis, having a beefy PC can significantly reduce the time it takes to finish a project. You’ll also want to take a look at any guidelines provided by your college or your specific program, as you may need required software or apps that only run on a specific OS.

Some other things to consider are if you want a more portable 13 or 14-inch machine that’s easier to carry around, or if you prefer something with a larger screen. On top of that, if you are doing tasks like photo or video editing, you’ll probably want to go for a system with a high-resolution display (1440p or 4K), so it's easier to see details. As for other specs, ideally you’ll want 16GB of RAM (though you can go down to 8GB on a Chromebook) and at least 512GB or 1TB of storage. Most newer laptops now come with SSD storage, too, which means you can store and transfer data much faster.

Finally, while your budget ultimately will determine how powerful of a laptop you can get, well-equipped ultraportables will generally cost between $1,000 and $1,400, with prices going up from there for systems with discrete GPUs. Budget Windows laptops and Chromebooks can be affordable alternatives though, with many going for just $500 to $700. But again, remember to check your school’s requirements because it’s not worth saving a few bucks only to find out that your notebook can’t run the app you need for all your homework.

A word on Microsoft’s new Copilot+ PCs

We have really enjoyed using the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop 7. They’re fast, quiet and support a huge range of both native Arm apps and traditional x86 software. However, there are a few major productivity apps that still have not been updated to work on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips used in the recent wave of Copilot+ PCs. Some of the most notable ones are Adobe’s Illustrator and InDesign (which won’t be available until sometime in July), and After Effects and Premier Pro, which aren’t expected to arrive until later in 2024. And given the number of college students who may need a PC to edit videos, draw or create layouts with these apps, that makes it difficult to give them whole-hearted recommendations in this guide right now. However, if you’re sure the apps you need for your course or major are supported, it may be worth giving these new Copilot+ PCs a closer look.

The 22 best PC games you can play right now for 2024

PC gamers have almost too many options when it comes to titles to play, which is a great problem to have. With decades of games to choose from (and the first port of call for most indie titles, too), the options are endless. You also get the perks of (nearly always flawless) backward compatibility and console-beating graphical performance — if you've got the coin for it when you’re building your perfect kit or picking up a high-powered gaming laptop. The whole idea of what a gaming PC is and where you can play it is shifting, too, with the rise of handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck. We've tried to be broad with our recommendations here on purpose; here are the best PC games you can play right now.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Final Fantasy XIV is on its fifth expansion, and with that comes two new jobs for our Warriors of Light to master. Dawntrail's release means that Pictomancer and Viper – both damage dealers (or DPS) – are newly available to play. But they're far from the only options.

Final Fantasy XIV is now officially up to 21 main jobs, as well as one limited job with a second on the way. A continual evolution of specified playstyles means that with every new level cap, each job gets tweaked a little, making it the perfect opportunity to dive into something new.

SUPERJUMP has a handy guide for anyone not certain what job to level next, homing in on what each excels at, the drawbacks, and its playstyle.

2.0 A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV's base game includes the original base class to job evolution. Your journey from levels 1 - 30 are as your selected base class, and upon reaching level 30 you receive your corresponding job stone and are able to move through the job questline. You'll need to complete one of these regardless, as not only does the game require you to pick a discipline during character creation, but every other job introduced in the later expansions begins at or after level 30.

You'll progress through the job quests through to level 80. These job quests also grant certain actions upon completion, so not completing them means you'll be missing the necessary skills. They're a must.

Tanks

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Gladiator - Level 1, Gladiator's Guild

Job Quest: Paladin's Pledge - Level 30, Gladiator's Guild

Paladins are primarily party-defensive tanks, with a skillset suited to mitigating damage to the whole party. In comparison to the three other tanks, Paladin is more "buff"-heavy, meaning they can do more to protect the at-large group and even heal other members, but also have to balance the uses of their abilities. Play-wise, there might be a little negotiating with party-wide damages and preemptively knowing when wind-ups for big hits might benefit from popping a little extra protection on everyone. They also have some skills that require casting.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Marauder - Level 1, Marauder's Guild

Job Quest: Pride and Duty (Will Take You From the Mountain) - Level 30, Marauder's Guild

Warriors are tanks focused more on damage and self-preservation. They've got nifty self-healing abilities that are notoriously convenient for running content solo. They lack Paladin's more party-based defense strategy, but their invul ability – Holmgang – is an endure-like ability that keeps them from falling below 1 HP for 10 seconds and is similarly as basic in use. Warrior is often considered extremely beginner-friendly due to its self-sustaining abilities and a forgiving rotation.

So, if you prefer a bit of tunnel vision when tanking – in not necessarily having to worry about party buffs, and instead focusing on yourself and fight mechanics – Warrior is the way to go.

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Lancer - Level 1, Lancer's Guild

Job Quest: Eye of the Dragon - Level 30, Lancer's Guild

Dragoons have a storied history in Ishgard. They're the poster job for Heavensward, and they also used to be affectionately known as floor tanks. They're very leap-oriented, so it's important when playing Dragoon to know your position on the board and be able to accurately understand where your dismount might land you, although this has become less of a pain in recent updates. Dragoons are also positional, meaning that damage is increased depending on the position in which you're executing certain skills.

These positions are usually the rear and flank (often on bigger enemies or bosses) and straight lines for mobs. Dragoons have a pretty solid starter kit with a very focused and straightforward rotation. Battle Litany, acquired at level 52 by way of job quest, provides more utility for the party, but otherwise, this job is a dedicated slice and dicer.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Pugilist – Level 1, Pugilist's Guild

Job Quest: Brother From Another Mother – Level 30, Pugilist's Guild

Monks move fast and hit hard. They're a close-range melee and are great if you're looking to be able to run around the board and dodge mechanics without having to worry about cast times or more explicit positionals. Unlike Dragoon, there's a fair bit of flexibility in how (and when) exactly you want to execute certain actions, but this also makes the job a little more of a balancing act. Monk has different "forms", and transitioning into these will determine the nature of the rotation in use. There are positionals in the coeurl form, but the other two – Opo-opo and Raptor – are more general in dealing damage. Monk has a generally loose, weavy feel during combat, with constant upkeep of moves and little downtime.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Archer – Level 1, Archer's Guild

Job Quest: A Song of Bards and Bowmen – Level 30, Archer's Guild

Bards are the songsters of the group, and like their inspirational counterparts, they have more utility for the wider group in the form of music-based actions that offer increased critical hit rates, healing, and more to all party members within range. Bards are also less strict in their rotations and have room for maneuverability in playstyle. Because of this focus on the wider group, Bards have somewhat of a responsibility (especially in higher-end content) to understand the use and timing of certain critical skill buffs.

In addition – you ever hear anyone playing the harp in the overworld? Leveling Bard also allows you to unlock instruments, which will provide you with a plethora of ways to play actual music on a variety of instruments.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Thaumaturge - Level 1, Thaumaturge's Guild

Job Quest: Taking the Black – Level 30, Thaumaturge's Guild

Y'shtola of the Scion is a dedicated black mage – a powerful spell-caster who can literally call down meteors on foes. Black Mage is a caster, meaning that you will have some downtime in readying spells, making the class a bit more difficult if you're dodging mechanic-heavy fights. There's a long-running joke that Black Mages refuse to move for certain AOEs when they're in their ley lines, which reduces cast time for a quicker rotation. It reflects a pretty real sacrifice of the playstyle, in that mistakes in your rotation when balancing the element gauge while having to dodge can result in a loss of built-up DPS. It is widely considered one of the best DPS damage-wise though.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Arcanist – Level 1, Arcanist's Guild

Job Quest: Austerities of Flame – Level 30, Arcanist's Guild

Summoners utilize the unique ability of summons, or "pets", to help deal damage. There are three main summons which, after the carbuncle phase, will become Garuda-egi, Ifrit-egi, and Titan-egi. Later levels see your ability to unlock Bahamut and Phoenix, which are pretty fun to unleash onto the field. Summoner is also one of the few DPS classes that has a resurrection ability, so they're able to assist healers if the party is taking heavy losses during a high-level raid or trial.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: My First Daggers – Level 1, Rogue's Guild

Job Quest: Peasants by Day, Ninjas by Night - Level 30, Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks

Ninja is a notoriously busy job, with high DPS and constant damage-dealing. There's little downtime, and there are windows in which you have to execute high burst damage. It's a very mobile class with some positionals, so there's a lot of flexibility in movement if you're trying to easily get out of the way of AOEs and other telegraphed attacks. This makes it a good choice for dodging mechanics, but the rotation can get busy, be demanding, and require focus.

Healer

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Conjurer – Level 1, Conjurer's Guild

Job Quest: Seer Folly – Level 30, Conjurer's Guild

White Mages are the traditional healers, with the bulk of their actions focused on casting strong burst heals instead of regen abilities or shield actions, meaning the play is a bit more reactive to what's happening in a fight than it is preemptive. As casters, this also means you run up against a similar issue as Black Mage, although thankfully this is offset by a great set of off-global-cool down (oGCD) skills that consist of instant heals and a pretty big heal-potency buff. They're also the only job questline that gets a mount at low level, so if you want to snag a unicorn by level 30, this is your place to do it.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Class Quest: Way of the Arcanist – Level 1, Arcanist's Guild

Job Quest: Forgotten but Not Gone – Level 30, Arcanist's Guild

The great thing about Scholar and Summoner is that they're both derived from the Arcanist class, so you really can level 2 jobs for the price of one until level 30. Scholars have a little more of a detailed playstyle, considering they've got a "pet" that, while autonomous, can do with a little guiding. Scholars are considered shield healers, which means they have a heavier focus on regen abilities and protective spells, but they're also pretty flexible.

Since this job has designated pet commands, it allows for greater situational specificity and adaptable play. This also means it's a bit of a hard sell if you like a less cluttered hot bar.

Heavensward

2015's Heavensward brought three new jobs into the rotation, one for each of the roles. The starting city - Ishgard - is full of towering Gothic structures and continual gales of snow. You'll find each starting quest line for the new jobs housed here, with no more class quests as a prerequisite. While you'll need to have completed the base game MSQ to unlock them, they all start at level 30.

Tank

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Our End – Level 50, The Pillars

Dark Knight is well-beloved for having one of the more emotionally potent questlines in the game. Some level it explicitly for that, but Dark Knight is a popular tank for a reason, and it's only partially because of its cooly gothic aesthetics. Like Warrior, Dark Knights can cause a lot of damage, but they have fewer self-sustainability abilities. You can also summon a shadow to fight with you at level 80, which adds to the whole job's vibe.

One of the more complicated aspects is in its invul ability, Living Dead, which allows you to essentially live past a hit that takes you to 0 HP, but you have to reach that 0 to activate your following ability, Walking Dead, which allows your dealt damage to provide big HP regens. This is a nifty ability when applied right but can also backfire in a way that Warrior or Paladin's invul abilities can't.

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Savior of Skysteel – Level 50, Foundation

Machinists are the gunslingers of the group, able to fire off from a distance with consistent damage. Unlike Bard, they have no real party buffs, meaning they're more focused on dealing damage. By level 40 Machinists gain a rook companion that runs, essentially, on its "battery" charge, and can only be in battle for so long. Machinists have a fairly dedicated rotation, so there's less concern about how flexible a player has to be under pressure. They're great if you want to blend more into the damage-dealing background.

Healer

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Stairway to the Heavens – Level 50, The Pillars

Astrologians are a bit more complicated than their other healing counterparts. They function on the use of cards that can be applied to certain members of the party based on their own job classification. For example, if the Balance card is drawn, it's best applied to a melee DPS or a tank for that extra few percentage points of buffed damage dealing. Knowing what cards apply to what classes makes this job a fair bit more difficult to master, in that there's some memorization needed under pressure, and the preemptive needs of the abilities means you'll have to read the tells of content mechanics more closely.

Stormblood

The third expansion arrived in 2017 and brought two new DPS jobs. This time the starting city is the jumping-puzzle playground of Kugane, but you won't find the jobs here – they're both unlockable in Ul'dah, and the only prerequisite is that you reach level 50, as they both start at level 50. This would start the trend of each new job introduction at expansion launch being twenty levels below the current max level. This also means they're only ten levels below the previous expansion's max, and since you're starting Stormblood at 60, you'll only need to level up by 10 to go through the MSQ with a shiny new job.

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: The Way of the Samurai – Level 50, Steps of Nald

Samurai is the heavy hitter of the melee DPS, in that it is a pure damage dealer. It lacks any party buffs, so the focus of the job is considered more selfish, an ideal choice for those who don't want to have to worry about when and how to execute certain buff abilities on other players. As a melee class, Samurai can also easily move around while still executing actions. It's a good starting class with high yields of damage, where you can focus, really, on just wailing on the enemy.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Taking the Red – Level 50, Steps of Thal

Red Mages are a bit of a mix between casters and melee classes. They see-saw between the white and black mana use and function slightly similar to black mages in the balancing out of particular spell affiliations. You also have engage and disengage abilities that, if well timed, allow for easy outs from AOEs as needed. Red Mages are also sometimes cheekily referred to as "Rez-Mages" for their Verraise ability when paired with their Dualcast trait (meaning the next spell has no cast time) for a great combo in high-end content. Conversely, it can also put some extra pressure on you if you want to fly a bit more under the radar. Luckily, you don't have to really worry about that until level 64 – and even then, its only real constant usefulness is in bigger party content.

Shadowbringers

Lali-HO! Shadowbringers is the expansion everyone talks about. It broke some ground after doing away with the slightly daunting job quests, and instead consolidated all roles into dedicated role quest lines. This was a four-way split to tank, healer, magical ranged DPS and physical DPS role quest lines. Luckily, these don't grant abilities like the job-specific quest lines do, so you can complete them at your leisure in later expansions – although they are required reading in Shadowbringers.

Tank

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Makings of a Gunbreaker – Level 60, New Gridania

Gunbreaker is a high-damage tank with a rotation that feels very DPS-like to a lot of players. It's got flashy moves and versatility in what kind of tank it needs to function as, so in content with two tanks, like higher-end trials, Gunbreaker can more easily adjust to the playstyle best suited to complement the other tank. Its invul ability, Superbolide, is fun in that it immediately reduces your HP to one while offering a window of 10-second invulnerability. Superbolide does have a pretty big tell (in that the HP just whooshes to one) but hey, as I've been maining White Mage lately, that's what Benediction's instant full heal is for!

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Shall We Dance? – Level 30, Lower Decks

Dancers fall in with Bards at the lower end of the damage-dealing spectrum in exchange for great party-wide buffs. Specifically for this job, you can select a "dance partner" with whom you can share all the benefits of your personal buffs, so it's best to choose a high-yield damage dealer like Samurai. There's a fair bit of flexibility with Dancer and it's an easy job to dodge with, making it a good selection for newcomers. It's also got something of a dancing mini-game at the end of a rotation, making it feel a little more cheerful than some of the serious jobs.

Endwalker

All good things end, and we mark the finale of a 10-year saga with the release of 2021's Endwalker. This also marks the first new job – Sage – that would be endemic to Final Fantasy XIV itself. These jobs are unlockable in the starting cities of Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa, so you can grab them as long as you've reached level 70.

Healer

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Sage's Path – Level 60, Lower Decks

Sage is considered a shield healer, meaning that nearly its entire toolkit is dedicated to preventative or pre-planned healing. This makes the job the opposite in utility of White Mage, which excels in topping up low numbers. Sage is all about preventing the numbers from getting that low in the first place, and they've got quite a few skills aimed at assuring damage is mitigated. It's best suited to players who like to be proactive rather than reactive and works wonderfully if you can reduce greater damage right off the bat. If stuff does hit the fan though, Sages aren't necessarily equipped with instant burst heals as readily as White Mage or Scholar.

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: The Killer Instinct – Level 60, Steps of Nald

Reaper calls the aid of voidsent to assist in battle. It's a very aesthetic job, sharing the vibes of Dark Knight in its particularly emo attire. Unlike most other melee jobs, it doesn't have as many positionals to remember, and also features an ability to become possessed by a voidsent, allowing you a burst window of high damage dealing. Reaper is flexible and considered easy to initially learn, making it a great entry point for those new to melee DPS.

Dawntrail

Announced at 2023's Fan Festival in Las Vegas, Square Enix unveiled Dawntrail, ushering in a new arc for the game's central story. It's a much sunnier venture – with vistas and cities inspired by South American cultures and rite of succession on the line. The two main jobs each start at level 80.

DPS

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: Enter the Viper – Level 80, Steps of Nald

Viper is the newest melee DPS and boasts extremely high damage. It's also a much more straightforward job than some of the other melee DPS jobs, meaning your hot bar won't be quite so busy. Lacking any real party buff skills, Viper is a more selfish playstyle focused solely on dealing damage and can grant itself its own buffs. Its combo also has more tells, making it easier to execute under pressure, as there's more guidance for what to press and at what times.

FFXIV: Dawntrail Job Guide

Job Quest: The Joy of Pictomancy – Level 90, Old Gridania

Pictomancer is a unique job that's got an...interesting playstyle. There's also something unintentionally hilarious about seeing players bust out a giant cartoon hammer while fighting a massive enemy that might be responsible for ending the world as we know it. Pictomancer focuses on painting certain rotations for its job gauge, and these can be applied situationally. You can also "pre-load" certain skills by painting them on your canvas, allowing you easy access to them as needed. It's a change of pace from other jobs that follow similar patterns, making Pictomancer a pretty fun pick.

So there you have it, 10 years of Jobs in the epic universe of Final Fantasy XIV. Let us know if the comments if you'd like to see more guides from our team.

The fantasy world in Black Myth: Wukong is filled with merciless and treacherous foes including more than 80 bosses that players will encounter throughout the journey. Most boss encounters are faced simply by pushing along the main path but there are several hidden bosses as well that can offer useful skills and abilities.

One such hidden boss that players can encounter early in the game is Guangzhi, the first Yaoguai Chief who offers the first Transformation ability. This guide will help you find Guangzhi and provide essential tips to defeat him in Black Myth: Wukong.

Guangzhi: Yaoguai Chief Location in Black Myth: Wukong

Guangzhi is the first Yaoguai Chief boss that players can encounter in the Forest of Wolves area. As players reach the ‘Outside the Forest’ Keeper’s Shrine, the game will primarily turn them into a bee to get past several foes including another side boss, Wandering Wight who offers the first Spirit Skill. However, players can return to this area whenever they want and find Guangzhi in a hidden spot.

From the Outside of the Forest Keeper’s Shrine, follow the steps below to reach Guangzhi.

  • Head inside the forest and take the first path on the left beside a couple of foes.
  • Continue following the path to come across a chest on the next fork.
  • Go past the chest to the bridge ahead.
  • Follow the path ahead to enter an open area with Guangzhi.

Upon finding Guangzhi, a brief cutscene will play and the fight will initiate.

Tips & Tricks for Guangzhi Fight – Black Myth: Wukong

However, you can remove the Burnt State instantly by using the Body Cooling Powder.

Moreover, follow the tips below to easily defeat Guangzhi.

  • Avoid the initial combo of Guangzhi by dodging behind and then dodging in front to get behind him.
  • Unleash your light attack combo on Guangzhi, and as he is about to do one of his attacks, use the Immobilize spell to stop him. Continue punishing Guangzhi and then back away once the spell is broken.
  • If you see Guangzhi going in a charged stance, dodge on either the right or left side to avoid the incoming charged attack and then dodge again instantly to avoid a follow-up charged attack.
  • After dodging the attack, you can punish the boss a bit.
  • If you see Guangzhi spin backward, be ready to dodge as he will throw the staff in your direction.
  • After dodging the attack, push on to the boss and punish him with your low attack combo. Moreover, use the Immobilize spell again if charged to deal extensive damage.
  • In the late fight, Guangzhi will use the staff for a ground slam attack. Dodge the ground slams until he gets back on the ground to punish him.

Repeat the steps to deplete Guangzhi’s HP and defeat him.

Rewards for Defeating Guangzhi in Black Myth: Wukong

Defeating Guangzhi will reward you with 500+ Will and 1x Stone Spirit, and mainly with Red Tides (Spell), the first transformation ability of the game.

Similar to using spells, you can use the Red Tides spell to transform into Guangzhi and use his ignited staff weapon. The transformation will last until you run out of Stamina/Might.

Black Myth: Wukong – How to Absorb Wandering Wight’s Dropped Spirits

Black Myth: Wukong has over 80 bosses that players encounter throughout the journey and each boss is designed uniquely requiring players to learn and counter their attacks. Alongside the main boss encounters in the main journey pathway, players can also encounter side bosses hidden around the areas.

One of the initial side-bosses in the main journey is Wandering Wight found inside the Forest of Wolves. Although the encounter isn’t that difficult, the confusing thing is the absorption of its dropped Spirits. This guide will provide you with information on how to get the guidance to absorb Wandering Wight’s Spirits.

Wandering Wight Encounter in Black Myth: Wukong

Wandering Wight is a side boss in Black Myth: Wukong and the game will primarily tell you to fly by it in a bee form. As players reach the ‘Outside the Forest’ Keeper’s Shrine in the Forest of Wolves area, a cutscene will transform them into a bee. Now, you can obviously transform back to the primary state or come back to this location to encounter the Wandering Wight.

‘Cannot Absorb Spirits Without Guidance’, Solution

Upon encountering Wandering Wight and defeating it, it will drop purple Spirits on the ground. It will have a prompt to ‘take’ the Spirits, but it will not let you without ‘guidance’. Now, to get the guidance, you have to progress further into the main story and reach the Snake Trail Keeper’s Shrine in the Bamboo Grove area by defeating ‘Lingxuzi’.

Once there, head up the staircase and go to the right to initiate a cutscene. In the cutscene, an NPC will take your Gourd (Healing Flask) and bless it with Guidance. With the guidance blessing on your side, you can now absorb the spirits (of any enemy/boss that drops them).

After getting the guidance, the next step is to absorb the spirits you left behind. However, the Spirits will not be there so don’t waste your time traveling back to the Forest of Wolves. Instead, interact with the Keeper’s Shrine and you will see the ‘Retrieve Spirits’ option. Select the Retrieve Spirits option and then hold the respective key to retrieve all of the missed spirits.

How to Upgrade the Spirits in Black Myth: Wukong

Moreover, as you acquire a Spirit Skill, you can upgrade it at the Keeper’s Shrine. Interact with the Keeper’s Shrine and navigate to the Self-Advance option to see the ‘Cultivate Spirits’ option. Select the Cultivate Spirits option and it will show you the cost of Will required to upgrade the acquired Spirit Skill. Hold the respective key to upgrade the Spirit Skill.

Black Myth: Wukong – Best Tips & Tricks for Beginners

Black Myth: Wukong is an action-adventure RPG inspired by the Journey to the West novel. You take the role of a destined one to retrieve the lost relics and achieve your destiny. However, the fantasy world holds merciless and treacherous enemies that will try to hold you back throughout the journey.

Most players might consider Black Myth: Wukong as Soulslike due to a few similar elements but it offers a unique experience with various gameplay mechanics. Beginners should grasp certain mechanics early in the game to make the journey more soothing for themselves.

This guide will go over the major tips and tricks for early playthrough in Black Myth: Wukong.

Best Tips & Tricks for Beginners – Black Myth: Wukong

After the opening sequence of Black Myth: Wukong, you will start as an ordinary monkey warrior only with a Staff, primary weapon. The general progression in the game’s world is pretty straightforward as it offers a linear pathway most of the time. As you progress through the game’s main quest, you will learn and unlock more abilities and spells to assist you greatly in more tough challenges ahead.

Moreover, if you focus on the tips and tricks described below, you can develop a stronger character allowing you to take on the encounters with less stress.

1. Enhance Health & Stamina and Lower Cost of Stamina

The earliest crucial tip that we would like to share with you is to enhance your character’s maximum HP and Stamina. It is done by spending your Sparks (Skill Points) in the Survival Skill Tree under the Foundation tab of Self-Advance. Get the Robust Constitution and Rampant Vigor to increase the maximum HP and Stamina of the character.

NOTE: There are other ways to enhance the maximum HP and Stamina in the game which will you discover as you progress through the story.

Alongside increasing the crucial stats of the character, the next tip is to lower the cost of stamina by dodging and running. It can be done by spending Sparks in the Stamina Skill Tree also under the Foundation tab. The first two skills in the Stamina Skill Tree will offer the reduction in Stamina cost upon sprinting and dodging. Get both of these as soon as possible because you will be dodging a lot during encounters.

Running out of Stamina will leave your character open for any incoming attacks.

2. Enhance Immobilize Power

Not far into the first chapter of the story, you will be handed a spell called Immobilize used for stopping the enemies. The enemies will stop in their attacks instantly for a short period allowing you to deal damage to them. However, you can improve this useful spell by spending the Sparks in the Immobilize Skill Tree under the Mysticism tab.

Various skills will enhance the period of the spell and damage taken by the foes while immobilized. Make the use of Immobilize spell frequently in your encounters to get a breather and the advantage of dealing extensive damage to foes.

3. Unlock More Staff Stances

Black Myth: Wukong offers multiple staff stances that make the combat experience more versatile. However, you start with only one Staff Stance, Smash Stance, and as you level up in the game, you will be introduced to other stances that not only diversify the combat experience but also grant you certain movement advantages for avoiding specific attacks.

For instance, the AOE attacks can be challenging to avoid in the early game but as you unlock the Pillar Stance (Level 5), it will be much easier for you to avoid them. Moreover, the Staff Stances also have their own Skill Trees in the Self-Advance menu where you can spend Sparks to enhance your favorite combat style.

4. Don’t Forget to Respec

With a variety of multiple Skill Trees spread across various mechanics, it is normal for you to grab a skill that isn’t quite necessary for you at the moment. In such cases, you can respec your skills at any Keeper’s Shrine. Interact with the shrine and navigate to the Self-Advance to find the respec option. Moreover, it will not cost you anything for resetting your skills.

5. Craft Armor for Benefits

While progressing through the different areas of the world, you will come across a variety of materials. Initially, you might confuse them for consumables but the materials are used for crafting armor pieces. Armor pieces can offer various benefits along with defense stats. Although several bosses will drop a certain armor piece upon defeat that you can wear, it is also crucial to see which armor you can craft at the Keeper’s Shrine.

6. Sell Pieces of Gold & Find Green Mist to Earn More Will

Will is the primary currency in Black Myth: Wukong which is used for purchasing items from various vendors across the world and crafting armor at the Keeper’s Shrine. You will usually get Will by defeating the enemies you encounter, but you can also earn Will by selling Pieces of Gold or picking up Green Mists.

The Pieces of Gold are usually found inside the chests scattered throughout the world and you can sell them at any vendor or at the Keeper’s Shrine. While exploring and traversing through the world, you will find Green Mists on alternative paths around the main path. Pick them up to gain a decent amount of Will.

7. Defeat Wandering Wight & Guangzhi Early

As you start progressing through the earlier areas of the game, you will witness a cutscene at the Forest of Wolves where you will be transformed into a bee to pass through multiple enemies. This certain area holds two important side bosses, each one for unlocking a unique ability.

If you come back to this path as a monkey, you will encounter the Wandering Wight, a giant enemy. Defeat this enemy to witness the dropped purple Spirits. You can pick up these Spirits to unlock a Spirit Skill that will allow you to headbutt the enemies and stun them.

NOTE: In order to absorb the spirits, you must first reach Snake Trail Keeper’s Shrine in the Bamboo Grove area. There, you will meet with an NPC who will grant your gourd with Guidance, allowing you to absorb any dropped spirits by enemies/bosses.

Moreover, if you venture to the left of this area, you will discover a path leading to an open area where you will encounter Guangzhi, the first Yaoguai Chief. Defeat this monkey boss to get yourself the first transformation ability.

Bonus Tip

Apart from these crucial tips and tricks mentioned above, another great tip is to use the Gourd (Healing Flask) necessarily instead of fully. The Gourd has a limited use (4 initially) and can only be replenished by resting at the Keeper’s Shrine.

DREDGE: The Iron Rig – How to Catch All Strange Specimens of Devil’s Spine

The story content of DREDGE: The Iron Rig revolves around finding the new strange specimens in all the regions whose waters get contaminated with oil as the story progresses. Upon bringing the strange specimens of Twisted Strand (the fourth contaminated area) to the Scientist, the contamination will spread to the final region, Devil’s Spine, requiring you to bring more strange specimens.

This guide will help you get all strange specimens of Devil’s Spine in DREDGE: The Iron Rig.

How to Catch All Strange Specimens of Devil’s Spine in DREDGE: The Iron Rig

The Strange Specimens of Devil’s Spine are of Volcanic and Hadal kinds only one of which can be caught using the Infused Hoist, but for the Volcanic kind, you have to craft a new rod called Infused Fireproof Rod. Crafting the Infused Fireproof Rod will require the following materials and a $200 cost.

NOTE: The Ironhaven Crate is found at the missing ship locations marked on the map. The Dark Canister is caught by sailing over the contaminated areas while Siphon Trawler is equipped. Lastly, the Heat-Resistant Line can be purchased from the Undermarket facility at the Iron Rig.

After crafting the Infused Fireproof Rod, equip it along with Infused Hoist and set sail to the Devil’s Spine to find and catch the strange specimens.

Where to Find the Strange Specimens of Devil’s Spine in DREDGE: The Iron Rig

All the strange specimens are found in the contaminated waters of Devil’s Spine so, look for any fish bubbles under the oil. The spawn location of every specimen is mentioned in the list below.

  • Giant Dragonfish – A Hadal (type) fish found at the N-14 coordinates.
  • Vetulicolia – A Volcanic (type) fish found also at the Q-12 coordinates.
  • Dunkleosteus – A Volcanic (type) fish also found at the Q-12 coordinates.
  • Sea Scorpion – it is an Infused Crab that can be found at the P-14 coordinates. Leave a Crab Pot at the location and pick it up after some time to get the Sea Scorpion.

Once you have obtained all the Specimens, the only thing left to do is to deliver them to the scientist and complete the fifth and final part of the Strange Specimens, the main pursuit.

Moreover, you will witness the Scientist turning into a contaminated creature, jumping out of the window, and disappearing into the Deep.

DREDGE: The Iron Rig – How to Complete Sabotage, Main Pursuit

The Sabotage is a main pursuit in The Iron Rig expansion of DREDGE that players will initiate after delivering all strange specimens of Twisted Strand. Doing so will make the Executive force the Foreman to start the drill, disturbing the creature below. The Foreman asks for your help to reason with the Executive.

This guide will walk you through the Sabotage pursuit in DREDGE: The Iron Rig.

How to Complete the Sabotage (Main Pursuit) in DREDGE: The Iron Rig

Check the Defenses Facility

As the Sabotage pursuit begins, the first objective is to check the Defenses facility. Select the first option to open one of the electrical panels to find a black box. However, you can’t do anything with it due to a lack of knowledge and the game will tell you to visit the Researcher, the Scientist’s student.

Meet the Researcher

Leave the Iron Rig and set sail to the Old Fortress location in the Stellar Basin region. Dock at the Old Fortress to meet with the Researcher and select the “About those defenses on the rig…” > “The workers on the rig want to find a way to sabotage them,” dialogues. Doing so will give you the blueprints for sabotaging the defenses to attract the creatures to the Rig.

Install a New Module to the Defense System

The next step is to install a new module ‘Rise’ to the defense system on the Iron Rig, but it will require a Dark Canister and an Ironhaven Crate. Luckily, you can get both of these materials on your way to the Iron Rig. Make sure to grab them and then return to the Iron Rig.

Dock at the Rig and select the ‘Defenses’ facility to install the module by delivering both of the materials. It will attract back the tentacle creature damaging the base of the rig. However, another creature will appear and attack the tentacle creature before it does any further damage to the rig.

As the cutscene ends, the Executive will run away from the rig and the pursuit will be resolved.

Act 2 - Black Myth Wukong

While Black Myth: Wukong may not be a traditional Souls-like, it shares enough challenging elements—such as its demanding difficulty level—that choosing your early stats and talents wisely is crucial for a smoother experience.

If you need a little guidance on which stats to take starting out, here's everything you need to know about early game stats and talents in Black Myth Wukong.

Best Early Game Talents in Black Myth: Wukong

There are many interesting abilities and talents you can invest in early in Black Myth: Wukong, and you might be interested in doing so because of that. However, Black Myth: Wukong is a fairly difficult game and it really doesn't pull its punches the further you progress. To that end, the most important stats you should take are the ones that boost your survivability and ability to evade enemy attacks. Health, stamina, and evasion are what your early points should be focused upon, not damage.

Staff Stances tree in Black Myth: Wukong

With your first six points, I highly recommend investing in the Robust Constitution talent under the Foundation-Survivial tree. That talent boosts your health by a decent margin and will allow you more room for error. More room for error means more options to adapt.

After that, I recommend going for Deft Evasion in the Foundation-Stamina tree. This talent considerably improves your ability to avoid enemy attacks, allowing you to cancel your early Light attack combo into a seamless dodge. This is important because, later on, you won't be able to just sit there and Light attack enemies to death.

Foundation Tree in Black Myth: Wukong
Screenshot by Destructoid

Under the same tree, you should invest at least one point into Simian Agility, Endurance, and Everlasting Vigor. These talents enhance your mobility, but the primary reason to invest in them is that they are prerequisites for unlocking Composure. This talent allows you to continue your Light attack combo string even if you dodge during it. You can be far more aggressive when attacking because you no longer need to be concerned about breaking your attack chain.

The last early-game Talent you should consider taking is Exhilaration, under the Staff Stances tree. This talent improves your Health recovery when consuming a Focus Point, which makes it a great way to heal without using a charge of your Gourd. This doubles as a benefit, as taking at least three points in this tree earns you a second Focus Point.

While many of these Talents are not the most interesting and are largely passive, it's important to get the survivability concerns out of the way so that you can actively take the more 'fun' Talents and stats without concern of dying all the time. Hopefully, this helps your adventure in Black Myth: Wukong.

Benefits and challenges of multiplayer AR/VR experiences

9. Duben 2024 v 05:31

Gaming continues to astound us with how it adjusts to take advantage of the latest technology. Some technology analysts would likely argue that pioneers in gaming have helped both industries succeed, constantly pushing each other and striving for innovation and creativity.

The global success and standing of the gaming industry have led to groundbreaking developments in the industry from around the world. AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) are the two latest developments in a long line of incredible advancements we’ve witnessed in gaming this century.

VR: Is it a fad, or is it here to stay?

It would be fair to say that VR has had a slow start. It hasn’t exploded right out of the gate and thrust into the global spotlight in the way AI has, for example. However, it would be unfair to compare technological development in AI, which could become the most dynamic, dangerous and significant human invention of all time, to other technologies.

There are increasingly practical uses for VR, and perhaps the most relatable one is in casino gaming. While the casino industry is booming, there is a clear distinction between those casino gamers who want to play at a land-based casino and those who prefer to play their blackjack and poker via a digital platform. One main concern among traditional players is that a digital casino can’t replicate the feel and aura of a land-based alternative, especially for those who prefer to receive any prizes they win in person.

However, this is where VR is now becoming a potential game-changer, with many figures in the land-based casino industry beginning to pay much closer attention to how the technology is embedding itself within the sector. Multiplayer VR is now incorporating digital elements into land-based casino gaming.

VR technology in console gaming

Companies such as Sony and Microsoft are also developing gaming titles that cater to VR players. However, there are some key challenges when it comes to adoption, cost and the quality of virtual depictions.

Some figures within the gaming industry believe that the colossal investment and involvement from companies like Apple and Meta mean that the development of virtual realities will ramp up in sophistication in the years to come.

Ultimately, this would mean the metaverse could soon become far more engaging, immersive and lifelike. If this prediction becomes reality, there could be a serious shift in casino gamers moving to VR casinos, along with a more significant number of home console gamers seeking out VR headsets to take their gaming into a unique, brave new digital world.

Challenges and positives of AR gaming

There’s a slight but crucial difference between VR and AR. While VR relies on an entirely digitally-designed setting, augmented reality blurs the lines between real life and gaming. AR may begin with the backdrop of real streets or imagery, but then it adds computer graphics to operate within the real world as we know it. VR, in contrast, does this from scratch, although it might take its influence from real-life places.

AR could put the right game developer on the road to riches, and there have been promising pockets of AR games. From 2016 onward, however, countless games have tried to break into the market, and many have not succeeded.

AR and VR must overcome challenges to find a foothold

The same challenges plague AR and VR gaming at the moment. While there might have been more positivity surrounding VR gaming over the last 18 months, there are still issues to address when it comes to cost, overall accessibility, and ultimately, interest.

Tens of millions of gamers worldwide enjoy console gaming, and there isn’t the drive or demand for VR to take over in a similar way. The technology does not have an edge or a landmark title that is causing the world to pay attention yet, and until it does, AR and VR will sit on the sidelines. This isn’t because the technology is poor; there simply hasn’t been a title yet that has truly grabbed gamers in the same way many landmark console games have.

If the cost drops significantly and the quality of the technology improves dramatically, it could also drive a lot of change. Right now, however, gaming companies are simply too sidetracked by more profitable and popular ideas.

The God Rolls For Every Weapon In Destiny 2's Episode: Echoes

Destiny 2’s first season of The Final Shape, titled Episode: Echoes, is in full swing now with its second Act being added to the game just recently. As is par for the course, Episode: Echoes has brought with it numerous weapons, both new and old, and these weapons all have God Rolls. Some weapons are great, others are not so great *cough* Faith-Keeper *cough*, but here are the God Rolls for each weapon that is a part of Episode: Echoes (including three guns that aren’t available just yet but are in the Destiny API). A few of these weapons have multiple choices for each column which will be listed, you can choose which of these combinations best suits your needs/playstyle in both PVE and PVP (where applicable).

Veiled Threat – Stasis Auto Rifle (Craftable)

The God Rolls For Every Weapon In Destiny 2's Episode: Echoes
Source: Author.

This 720rpm Rapid Fire Frame Auto Rifle is the first weapon that this episode has to offer. While its perks aren’t the strongest, those who need a decent Stasis Auto Rifle can aim for one of these bad boys. For PVP I recommend using Arrowhead Break to bring in the weapon’s recoil pattern a little, but you can opt to use something like Hammer-Forged if you prefer the bump in range.

Joining the new Heavy Burst Pulse Rifle family alongside the likes of Aisha’s Care from Trials of the Osiris and Nullify from Salvation’s Edge, Corrasion looks to prove that this type of auto rifle is king in PVE right now. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend a Heavy Burst Pulse Rifle in PVP, but there are still options here should you choose to go down that route.

Sightline Survey – Arc Hand Cannon (Craftable)

The God Rolls For Every Weapon In Destiny 2's Episode: Echoes

Precision Frame Hand Cannons aren’t exactly the strongest weapons in Destiny 2. They see little to no use in PVE, with a case being made for them in PVP with the Sightline Survey. Either way, PVE and PVP players alike should find various options here. For PVE, I would recommend Enlightened Action more than Triple Tap as it has more direct synergy with Voltshot, but either perk is good.

Timeworn Wayfarer – Solar Scout Rifle (Craftable)

Joining the stylish but, for now, underpowered Tex Mechanica style Scout Rifle family is the Timeworn Wayfarer. While initially panned for being a member of the weakest family in one of the most consistently underwhelming primary weapon types in Destiny 2, this gun is surprisingly versatile and might see more use in PVE with the incoming buff to its damage. This weapon is incredibly potent in PVP when paired with High Ground and a Radiant buff, allowing the possibility of defeating opposing Guardians in two headshots. You can choose between Smallbore or Hammer-Forged Rifling for a PVP roll, as the latter has 7 less stability but will grant you an extra metre of range.

Aberrant Action – Solar Sidearm (Craftable)

The God Rolls For Every Weapon In Destiny 2's Episode: Echoes
Source: Author.

The hottest weapon in the game right now, Aberrant Action is the third member of the relatively new family of Rocket-Assisted Frame Sidearms. This is THE weapon everyone wants as the archetype is incredibly strong right now. I do NOT recommend using this in PVP, so I will only be providing a PVE god roll for this weapon. There are a number of choices but there are a few quirks to be noted with this weapon. For starters, despite being a special weapon, perks like Strategist, Pugilist, and Demolitionist provide the benefit of a primary weapon, so rather than the 20% ability energy generation, it is 10%. Either way, there is one very clear winner here: Incandescent.

One of the few weapons that are currently not available at the time of writing, but are viewable in the Destiny API, this Void Trace Rifle looks to replace Hollow Denial which has been dominating its Void Trace Rifle field since Season of the Haunted back in 2022. Like Aberrant Action, I am not providing a PVP roll for this weapon as I don’t recommend bringing this thing into the Crucible.

Look, not all weapons in each episode can be a banger, and Faith-Keeper immediately loses to stiff competition like the Apex Predator by proxy of its terrible archetype; Precision Frame Rocket Launcher. I honestly would not recommend bringing this into either PVP or PVE content, but if you did want to use this admittedly cool-looking rocket launcher, there is one roll that should have you covered (for PVE, not PVP).

Ill Omen – Stasis Sword (Craftable)

The God Rolls For Every Weapon In Destiny 2's Episode: Echoes
Source: Author.

Swords are quite strong right now. They have proven to be useful in Salvation’s Edge, Crota’s End, and even Root of Nightmares if you are crazy enough. Unfortunately for Ill Omen, Caster Frame swords just are not very good. There is one niche for it, however, and that is as an Overload and Unstoppable Champion stun machine. I wouldn't recommend it over something like the Aurvandil FR6 which can have Reconstruction and Chill Clip, but if you are so inclined to muck around with this sword, there is something for you here. I don’t recommend this at all for PVP so I will only provide a PVE God Roll.

One of the other few weapons that are currently not available, but are viewable in the Destiny API, the Speleoligist has some interesting perks and can potentially fit right in as your heavy add clear machine. I can’t recommend this for PVP as I currently have no idea how it handles, but I can’t imagine it would stack up compared to its competition in the same slot.

Breachlight – Strand Sidearm

A fan favourite amongst the community, this reprised Season of Dawn Sidearm shows off its shiny new elemental typing, Strand. While regular Sidearms aren’t the strongest in PVE, there are some options here for you to have some fun. I do not recommend this weapon for PVP, as its perks do not seem to favour the Crucible sandbox, currently.

Perfect Paradox – Kinetic Shotgun

This slick shotgun sees a return but can only be looked at as an option for melee-oriented PVE builds, as Rapid Fire Frame Shotguns are not very good in the Crucible. There is still a roll here for those that don’t have a crafted Wastelander MK5 from Dares of Eternity. I would only pair Pugilist with Trench Barrel if you wish to use the former over something like Threat Detector/Remover which should be paired with One-Two Punch.

The first Solar Wave Frame that players will be able to obtain since Season of the Risen’s Explosive Personality, it seems that PVE players will finally have a PVE-oriented Solar Wave Frame Grenade Launcher. One of the common fish that players can get is Yellow Perch currently required as a weekly want for Einar.

This guide will walk you through where to find and catch Yellow Perch in Palia.

Where to Find Yellow Perch in Palia

Yellow Perch can be found in Bahari Rivers at any time of the day. There are several spots in Bahari Bay to fish in the Bahari Rivers, but one of the best fishing spots to find Yellow Perch is the waterfall beside Thorny Thicket located on the northern side of Bahari Bay.

How to Catch Yellow Perch in Palia

Upon reaching the fishing location of Bahari Bay, you need to start catching fish in the deep area of the lake with no bait.

Cast the line as far as you can with your fishing rod and wait for the bobber to shake three times. As the bobber starts to move after the third shake, reel in the fish by holding the Left-Click Button and moving the mouse to keep the fish inside the brackets to catch the fish.

Uses of Yellow Perch in Palia

One of the flowers that grow in low quantity and are harder to find is the Heartdrop Lily which is also required for completing a couple of quests.

This guide will help you find the Heartdrop Lily in Palia.

Where to Find Heartdrop Lily in Palia

Heartdrop Lily is found growing on the cliffs of the mountains in the Bahari Bay map zone from Day to Night in-game time (6 AM – 9 PM). The locations where it can be found often are the mountain cliffs south of the Flooded Steps and the mountain cliffs north of the Statue Garden in Bahari Bay.

The Heartdrop Lily is an Epic Flower and spawns in low quantity on the cliffs, and the most frequent location where we found it the most is the Flooded Steps cliffs. Make your way up to the mountain on the northeast of the Ancient Aquaduct road and you will find a Heartdrop Lily on one of the cliffs.

NOTE: You must come to the spawn locations during the in-game time of 6 AM to 9 PM to be able to find the Heartdrop Lily flowers.

Moreover, if you can’t find Heartdrop Lily, you can purchase it from Foraging Guild (Ashura) for 20 Foraging Medals.

Uses of Heartdrop Lily in Palia

The Heartdrop Lily flower is used in the following couple of quests.

It is used as a special gift item to romanceable villagers. You can sell it for 100 Gold to Zeki or at the Shipping Bin. Moreover, you can also gift it to certain villagers who like it or to those who need it.

Palia offers various types of Bugs that players can catch while doing the Bug Catching Guild. Catching all rarities of bugs is the crucial step of leveling up the Bug Catching Guild to unlock advanced versions of the Belt as well as new items and crafting recipes at the Bug Catching Guild Store. One of the Uncommon Bugs that players can catch is Lunar Fairy Moth which is currently required as a weekly want for Tamala.

This guide will focus on where you can find and how you can catch the Lunar Fairy Moth in Palia.

Where to Find Lunar Fairy Moth in Palia

The Lunar Fairy Moth is an Uncommon bug in Palia that spawns throughout the evening and night (6 PM – 3 AM) in the Bahari Fields. You have a chance of finding one out in the open while traversing the open fields or on top of the cliffs in Bahari Bay. However, the fields and cliffs in the southern areas have a higher chance of finding it such as Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and above the Pavel Mines.

How to Catch Lunar Fairy Moth in Palia

Catching the Lunar Fairy Moth is similar to catching Paper Lantern Bugs. However, stunning the Lunar Fairy Moth will require multiple Smoke Bombs so, make sure you bring enough to stun it when you find it. If the Lunar Fairy Moth gets alerted, it will try to flee by flying away. It is best to throw the Sticky Smoke Bombs on it to slow it down and then use the regular Smoke Bombs to stun it.

Once you have stunned the Lunar Fairy Moth, simply go near it and interact with it to pick it up. Picking up Lunar Fairy Moth will have a chance to drop Datura Flower and Lunar Fairy Moth Plush.

Uses of Lunar Fairy Moth in Palia

Lunar Fairy Moth can be sold for 40 Gold (Base) and 60 Gold (Star Quality) to Zeki or at the Shipping Bin. Moreover, you can also gift it to certain villagers who like it or to those who have a weekly want for it. Sword of Convallaria: How to Change Your Appearance

Sword of Convallaria is a Tactical RPG where you take the role of a leader of the mercenary group and strategize to save the nation of Iria. As players begin the adventure, they will get to select the appearance of Voyager (the main protagonist) either male or female. However, the game doesn’t keep players from changing the appearance of Voyager as it can be changed once players have reached Elysium.

This guide will help you change your appearance in Sword of Convallaria.

How to Change Your Appearance in Sword of Convallaria

The appearance options for the main protagonist (Voyager) are only two including male or female. At the start of the adventure, once you have made the primary appearance choice, you will get to play as it is for the tutorial (The Rift). Upon completing the tutorial and reaching the hub Elysium, you will be free to change the appearance but it will cost you 50 Hope Luxites.

To change the appearance of Voyager, select the profile icon on the top left corner of the screen, and then navigate to edit by selecting the icon with a pencil in it. It will give you the options for changing Nickname, Décor, and Appearance. Select the appearance option and then select the male or female appearance for the character. Once done, confirm the change for 50 Hope Luxites and your Voyager appearance will be changed.

Moreover, you can change the appearance at any time but each time it will cost you 50 Hope Luxites which aren’t easy to come by. Hope Luxites is a currency used for various other purposes with Secret Fates being the top ones as they are used for summoning heroes and weapons.

Should You Change the Appearance of Voyager in Sword of Convallaria?

Changing the appearance of Voyager doesn’t change anything in terms of gameplay, abilities, skills, etc. As Voyager only comes to certain main story missions, you will only witness the physical appearance change while playing with it or at the Elysium. Other than that, it is useless to change the appearance and it is best to save as many Hope Luxites as possible because the end-game missions require a party of stronger heroes which can only be formulated by rolling legendary heroes.

Strengthening your characters/heroes is essential for completing the higher-level missions in Sword of Convallaria, but it cannot be simply achieved by increasing your Voyager Level and leveling up the characters/heroes individually. Additionally, you will be required to get your characters some powerful weapons and gear items to grant a significant boost to their stats.

This guide will help you get the weapons and gear items for the characters in Sword of Convallaria.

How to Get Weapons & Gear Items in Sword of Convallaria

Players will obtain weapons and gear items (trinkets and tarot whispers) by progressing in the main story. Upon completing certain main missions in the story, the first-time rewards will offer various gear items. However, most of the awarded gear from the story is only viable until mid-game as the most effective weapons and gear items are attained from rolling the Mighty Weapons banner in the Summon Menu.

To get your hands on the legendary weapons and gear items, roll the Mighty Weapons banner using the Secret Fate currency. It is the same currency used for pulling the Heroes/Characters. Head over to the Summon Menu and scroll down to find the Mighty Weapons event. Select it and summon it to have a chance of getting a legendary weapon/gear item.

However, similar to the heroes, the probability of higher-grade weapons and gear items is lower.

  • Legendary weapon – 5% probability
  • Epic weapon – 50% probability
  • Rare weapon – 25% probability
  • Common weapon – 20% probability

Moreover, you will also see a guaranteed summon after a few roles revealing that you can get a legendary weapon/gear item on a certain amount of summons. In such case, you must have a required amount of Secret Fates as each summons costs 1 Secret Fate.

As pulling your free heroes and weapons plays a crucial role in your early playthrough, getting your hands on as many Secret Fates as possible will help you greatly. Moreover, building a team of high-rarity heroes is recommended in the end-game missions so formulating a team early and leveling them up will make things a lot easier for you.

This guide will help you get Secret Fate and highlight the method of how to use it in Sword of Convallaria.

How to Get Secret Fates in Sword of Convallaria

Players can earn Secret Fates through three different methods in Sword of Convallaria. It is a rare currency and awarded fairly in low amounts, but players who are comfortable with spending real money can get it at any time which is the first method of getting Secret Fates.

1. Spend Real Money in the in-game Shop

Secret Fate currency can be bought from the in-game shop using Hope Luxites. As Hope Luxites is more of a primary currency in Sword of Convallaria, you can exchange it in the ‘Exchange’ tab of the in-game shop for Secret Fate. 1 Secret Fate is equivalent to 150 Hope Luxites and you can purchase Hope Luxites in bundles from the shop.

However, apart from purchasing Hope Luxites, you can also achieve it through generic gameplay such as:

  • Completing Story Missions
  • Completing Crossing Worlds Stages
  • Completing Events
  • Reward from Cornucopia/Season Pass
  • Reward from Daily log-in
  • Performing well against other players in Clash mode

2. Complete Promise of Secret Fates Event

Now, for the free method, players can earn Secret Fates by participating and completing the Promise of Secret Fates event. Currently, this is the only event that is offering Secret Fates as a reward for each level milestone. The event contains three level milestones.

  • Reach Voyager Level 10
  • Reach Voyager Level 20
  • Reach Voyager Level 30

For each milestone, it gives 10x Secret Fate as a reward.

3. Check Mail for Any Free Secret Fates

Lastly, another free method through which players can get Secret Fates is by checking the in-game mail. Developers usually send out various rewards to all the players and it is possible that you might receive a few Secret Fates in your mail.

Moreover, you can also redeem codes to get various rewards in your mail, but currently, there are no codes that contain Secret Fates as a reward.

How to Use Secret Fates in Sword of Convallaria

The Secret Fates are used in the Summon Menu located at the bottom of the screen while at in Elysium. In the Summon Menu, you will see different events on the left side from where you will be pulling the heroes and weapons using the Secret Fates. Now, each event has a different probability of pulling a legendary hero or weapon so you will be spending quite a lot of Secret Fates before you get one.

Moreover, some of the events will also show you a guaranteed pull within a certain number of pulls. For instance, you will see Gloria’s guaranteed pull within 20 pulls. It means you have to spend 20 Secret Fates on the corresponding event to get a guaranteed Gloria pull.

The best smart displays for 2024

Smart displays have evolved quite a bit since the initial debut of Amazon’s first Echo Show back in 2017. In fact, the category didn’t really come into its own until Google joined the fray with its own line of hardware about a year later. Now, both of these companies are essentially dominating the smart display landscape, with each offering their own take on a smart assistant with a screen.

It’s that screen that can make smart displays much more useful than smart speakers. Rather than just having a voice assistant recite the current weather report, for example, you can see a five-day forecast as well. The same goes for when you ask about your shopping list or calendar; it's simply easier to read the whole list or your day's appointments at a glance. Plus, touchsreens offer other benefits that speakers can't, like watching videos or checking your webcam to see who's at your front door. We've tested and used many smart displays over the years and below are a list of our top picks for the best smart displays you can get today.

Best smart displays for 2024

What to consider before buying a smart display

Amazon vs. Google voice assistants

The first question you should ask when looking for the best smart display for you is whether you prefer Amazon’s or Google’s ecosystem. If you have a lot of Google smart devices in your home, like Nest thermostats and security cameras, or even if you use a Google Pixel smartphone as your daily driver, then a Google-powered model may make more sense. If you have Amazon products, like a Fire TV Stick or a Ring cam, Amazon would obviously be a better choice from a compatibility standpoint. Of course, it's perfectly acceptable to have products from competing companies in the same home, but just realize they might not work seamlessly with each other from the start.

Aside from that, the two systems also offer some unique features. Google, for example, works best if you have an existing Google account and use services like Calendar and Photos. We especially love Google smart displays because they work well as digital photo frames. You can set it up to automatically pull in pictures of friends and family from your Google Photos library, and the algorithm is smart enough to use what it thinks are the best shots — so less chance of blurry photos or images of your eyes half-closed showing up, for example. But although you can use Amazon's displays as digital photo frames, the process is not quite as intuitive as Google’s, and Amazon doesn’t have anything comparable to Google’s photo-sorting algorithm.

It might seem like a minor point, but seeing as the display is on standby 90 percent of the time, its secondary function as a digital picture frame is very welcome. All Google smart displays also support YouTube and YouTube TV, step-by-step cooking instructions and all of the usual benefits of Google Assistant, like weather reports. As with Assistant on the phone, it also has voice recognition, so only you can see your calendar appointments and not others.

Amazon's smart displays, on the other hand, are slightly different. Instead of YouTube, they offer some alternative video streaming options, including Amazon Prime, NBC and Hulu. They also come with two browsers (Silk and Firefox), which you can use to search the web or watch YouTube videos – a handy enough workaround given the lack of a dedicated app. Amazon devices also offer step-by-step cooking instructions as well, thanks to collaborations with sources like SideChef and AllRecipes. The cooking instructions sometimes include short video clips, too.
