Stingray in Stardew Valley can be caught in Pirate Cove

If you’ve unlocked Ginger Island in Stardew Valley, you’ve got a whole new bunch of fish waiting to be caught. These fish can be found all over the island and, like those in the Valley, come with time and weather restrictions, but they each have their uses.

One of these new fish is the Stingray, which may not be used in many quests or recipes, but it does serve an incredibly useful purpose. There’s an Island Trader who will sell you Mahogany Seeds for one Stingray each, and, in case you don’t know, Mahogany Trees drop Hardwood when chopped down.

How to catch a Stingray in Stardew Valley

To catch a Stingray, you’ll need to head to the Pirate Cove area of Ginger Island. Thankfully, Stingrays can be caught at any time and in any weather, so you shouldn’t have too much of a hard time finding them.

When hooked, Stingrays will dart around the fishing minigame a bit, so you may find it difficult to keep the green section on them. To make this easier, you can use a Cork or Trap Bobber. If you want to see what you’ve hooked before reeling it in, you can use a Sonar Bobber.

If you’re not planning to stock up on Mahogany Seeds using your newly caught Stingrays, there are still a few things that you can use them for. Predominantly, they actually sell for a relatively high price. Each Stingray will sell for at least 180 Gold, with this price rising to 540 Gold depending on the quality of the Stingray and whether you have the Fisher or Angler profession

Crafting

Stingrays can be used in the following recipes:

  • Maki Roll
    • 1 of any Fish
    • 1 Seaweed
    • 1 Rice

  • Quality Fertilizer
    • 4 Sap
    • 1 of any Fish

  • Sashimi
    • 1 of any Fish

Tailoring

When a Stingray is used in the spool of a Sewing Machine, you’ll be able to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt. As well as this, a Stingray can be used in the dye pots at Emily and Haley’s house to create an orange dye.

Quests

The only quest which will require you to catch Stingrays is one of Willy’s Special Orders called ‘Tropical Fish’. This will only become available to complete once you’ve unlocked Ginger Island, and you’ll need to provide five Stingrays.

Fish Pond

When placed in a Fish Pond, Stingrays will reproduce every four days. A Stingray pond is capable of producing the following items on any day:

  • 1 Roe
  • 1 Magma Cap
  • 2-5 Cinder Shards
  • 1 Dragon Tooth
  • 1 Battery Pack

Board games are a great social activity that brings people together by disconnecting everyone from their screens. But what if your favorite stories and worlds from the screen could be a part of board game night too? With these ten great board games based on video games, it’s now possible to enjoy your favorite digital titles in an exciting new tabletop setting.

1. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim- The Adventure Game

Skyrim the adventure game
Image via Modiphius

The iconic adventures and exploration of Skyrim await you in the game’s excellent tabletop adaption. As opposed to the classic video game, Skyrim- The Adventure Game is a cooperative experience for up to four players, which affects both the combat and dungeon loot systems. Each player’s character is suitably unique, and the strategic decisions you make throughout the game’s two campaigns can trigger exclusive story outcomes as well.

2. Fallout: The Board Game

fallout the board game
Image via Fantasy Flight Games

The Fallout Board Game does just about everything right in adapting this classic video game franchise. An unknown post-apocalyptic world awaits you outside your vault, along with deadly enemies and warring factions. The art style is most faithful to the series’ more recent adaptions, and the storylines are appropriately thematic and recognizable to anyone who’s played Fallout before. Interactions between players are semi-cooperative; while everyone has their own objectives, they also need to work together to prevent any one of the non-player factions from taking over the wasteland.

3. Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time

kingdom rush rift in time
Image via Lucky Duck Games

Kingdom Rush is a classic tower defense game in which you place archers and other troops to defend against waves of oncoming enemies. Whereas the original video game is a fast-paced race, Rift in Time instead features more calculated, strategic gameplay. The game comes with a booklet of scenarios that you can play against, which makes it easy to adjust the difficulty. In addition, the miniatures look great and are fun to paint.

4. Civilization: A New Dawn

civilization board game
Image via Fantasy Flight Games

Establish your kingdom, expand your territories, and build the great monuments of man in Civilization: A New Dawn, the most recent tabletop adaption of Sid Meier's Civilization. Though the original video game draws its roots back to a 1980s board game, the video games that followed have evolved significantly. A New Dawn utilizes many of the newer technology and city upgrade options from the most recent titles. Playtime is thankfully shorter than the 2010 edition of the board game, and to top it all off, the game tiles are gorgeous.

5. Small World of Warcraft

small world of warcraft
Image via Days of Wonder

Small World of Warcraft is a WoW-themed adaption of the popular board game Small World. Players take control of the major races in Azeroth, including everything from Orcs to Worgen, and attempt to conquer as much territory as possible on the game’s various islands. Once one of the races you control is overextended, you can take charge of another to continue the conquest and hopefully have the most points by the end of the final round.

6. Slay the Spire: The Board Game

slay the spire card game
Image via Kickstarter

With its outstanding deck-building and strategy elements, Slay the Spire feels like the perfect video game to bring to the tabletop environment. Contention Games has done just that via Kickstarter, with the recently released adaption gathering nearly four million dollars worth of pledges. All the best elements of the original title are here, including, of course, the absolutely iconic six-eyed whale Neow. The biggest change here is the cooperative multiplayer, but it's a welcome change that's more befitting a board game.

7. This War of Mine: The Board Game

this war of mine
Image via Galakta Games

Survival is the name of the game in This War of Mine: The Board Game, which does a fantastic job of bringing the war-torn surroundings and impactful storylines of the original video game to the table. During the day, you’ll build up your shelter and gather the resources you need to scrape by. During the night, you’ll have to fight off bandits to protect what little you have. The mechanics of exploring new locations work really well, with risks and rewards to be found in every corner of the war-torn city.

8. Dead by Daylight: The Board Game

dead by daylight
Image via Level 99 Games

Dead by Daylight: The Board Game leans heavily on hidden movement mechanics to represent the Killer’s stalking presence and the four Survivor’s attempts to escape. All the basic elements of the video game work surprisingly well in the tabletop environment, and there are also plenty of props and other tools that the Survivors can use as they work to stay alive. Most importantly, the competitive thrill of the original remains.

9. Stardew Valley: The Board Game

stardew board game
Image via Stardew Valley Shop

The cozy confines of Stardew Valley come to the table with immersive, cooperative gameplay and faithful attention to detail, though the board game does have some key differences from its source material. The players have a set number of turns in which they can complete their goal cards and rebuild the community center, but if the season cards run out, the players lose. Thankfully there’s still lots of farming, fishing, and mining fun to be had, along with plenty of interaction with the Valley’s most recognizable inhabitants.

10. God of War: The Card Game

god of war board game
Image via CMON

God of War’s most iconic characters come to the table in style in the God of War card game. You’ll need to complete a series of scenes and quest cards to survive Ragnarok and win. It’s primarily a deck-building game, though you’ll be up against a set of randomly selected monsters and bosses rather than the other players at the table. It’s a must-have collectible for fans of the God of War franchise. We're also looking forward to finding out if the upcoming God of War Gamefound project will be an even better tabletop adaption than this one.

Rainbow Shell in Stardew Valley

There are a lot of things to find in Stardew Valley. Unfortunately, many of these things are time-restricted, and if you don’t get them in the right season, you need to wait an entire year for the chance to get them again.

Rainbow Shells are one such forageable item in Stardew Valley. While these pretty little shells aren’t used for many quests or crafting, they’re a solid bet to be given as a gift to most villagers as a gift and can be used inside Fish Tanks as a decoration.

How to get Rainbow Shells in Stardew Valley

The foremost place to get Rainbow Shells is through foraging on the beach in the Summer. If you’re playing on a Beach Farm, you may find them on the ground at any time of the year.

Thankfully, there are a few other ways to find them outside of Summer:

  • In the mines, after activating the Shrine of Challenge
  • In the mines during the ‘Danger in the Deep’ quest
  • As a gift from Jas, Vincent, or Leo during the Feast of the Winter Star
  • As a gift from Demetrius, received via mail
  • 2% chance of a Rainbow Trout Fish Pond producing 1 Rainbow Shell daily if the population reaches 9
  • As a gift from a pet Turtle with maximum friendship
  • May appear in the Traveling Cart for between 900 and 1,500 Gold

How to use a Rainbow Shell in Stardew Valley

You'll need a Rainbow Shell if you want to unlock the Casino in Stardew Valley
Screenshot by Destructoid

Most villagers will like getting a Rainbow Shell as a gift. The only exceptions to this are Elliot, who feels neutral about it, or Harvey, who hates them.

Quests

The Mysterious QI quest, which will eventually open up the back door inside the Oasis and allow you access to the Casino, requires one Rainbow Shell to be placed inside the box at the train station.

If you have a Blobfish Pond, they may request a Rainbow Shell in order to increase the capacity of the pond from 7 to 10.

Tailoring

In order to create a dyeable Bikini Top, you can place a Rainbow Shell in the spool of a Sewing Machine. Otherwise, you can use a Rainbow Shell with the Sewing Machine to open up the dye menu, allowing you to dye an item any color using sliders.

The Greenhouse in Stardew Valley

Once you’ve restored the Greenhouse by completing the Pantry bundles in Stardew Valley, you’re able to plant anything you like inside the Greenhouse without seasons restricting you. Depending on what you want to grow, you may want to think about your layout.

There are a few different layout options for the Greenhouse, and which one is best for you will depend on what you’re hoping to grow. Regardless of your intended crops, let’s go through the best layouts.

Best layouts for sprinklers in the Greenhouse

Sprinklers are, in my opinion, vital to the successful growth of crops inside the Greenhouse. Once you’ve placed down Sprinklers, you only need to water any crop once, and then the Sprinklers will do all of the work for you, saving you both time and energy.

Optimal layout for Quality Sprinklers in the Greenhouse in Stardew Valley

Optimal layout for Iridium Sprinklers in the Greenhouse in Stardew Valley

Where you put Sprinklers will depend on which type of Sprinklers you want to use, and which upgrades you have available to you. It’s likely that, by the time you’ve unlocked the Greenhouse, you’ll at least have Quality Sprinklers available to you, and you’ll need 16 of these in order to fully water every square of the Greenhouses available space, leaving room for 108 plants.

However, if you have Iridium Sprinklers, you only need six in order to cover this space. This leaves room for 116 plants. Upgrading your Iridium Sprinklers to have Pressure Nozzles will allow you to only take up one space with a Sprinkler, but this only frees up three additional crop spaces.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to worry about Sprinklers at all, you can use Deluxe Retaining Soil to negate the need for watering entirely. This Soil has a 100% chance of retaining water overnight and after only a single watering, will retain water until you physically remove the crop.

Best layout for Fruit Trees in the Greenhouse

Optimum Greenhouse layout allowing for 18 Fruit Trees in Stardew Valley

Fruit Trees can be grown in the greenhouse in any of the spaces outside of the middle planting area. You don’t need a Garden Pot to do this, simply plant the Tree Sapling in the ground.

The best layout for this will allow you to have 18 Fruit Trees inside the greenhouse, with two spaces between each to allow for proper growth.

You don’t need to worry about watering the trees, they’ll grow in their own time and eventually provide you with all the fruit you need or could dream of.

Best layout for trellis plants in the Greenhouse

A good Greenhouse layout for crops which require a trellis in Stardew Valley

Unlike other crops, anything that grows on a trellis (Grapes, Hops, or Green Beans) cannot be walked through. If you want to plant these in your Greenhouse, you’ll need to leave space between each crop to allow for harvesting.

Although this does leave a lot of empty space and creates a few dead ends, you can fill the space with other crops. This is definitely more adaptable to personal preference and depends on which sprinklers you’re using, but as long as you leave space to walk between your crops, you’re golden. The above image is my preferred trellis layout when using Deluxe Retaining Soil, with other crops, such as Ancient Fruit, filling out the empty space.

On June 21, 2024, X (Twitter) user nightshademagia released a Hardcore Mode mod for Stardew Valley that’ll delete your save file if you open up the Wiki for the game. This was based off a joke article from Hard Drive.

You can find the source code via Github here. There’s also a clip showing how it works. In the clip, they load up their file as per usual. Then, in another window, they open up the Stardew Valley Wiki. As soon as they do so, the game forces them back to the title screen and when they try to load up a game, their save file is gone.

The original article was from satire website Hard Drive, stating that the new default Hardcore Mode erases your save file if you open the official wiki. The article includes false quotes from players expressing their outrage, including a fake quote from ConcernedApe, the creator of Stardew Valley. Some players tend to use the Wiki to help them optimize their farm or game. For example, you can look up what gifts certain characters prefer or how to catch certain fish.

Stardew Valley is readily available for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, macOS, and mobile devices. It is one of the best-selling games of all time, selling over 30 million copies by February 2024.

The Witch's Hut in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is filled with quests to complete and secrets to find, some of which unlock new areas to explore. One of these new areas, the Witch’s Swamp, not only unlocks new sights but also new features. Here’s how to unlock it.

Before you can trigger the quest that unlocks the Witch’s Swamp, you’ll need to have either completed the Community Center bundles or the Joja Warehouse tasks. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to wait for a cutscene in the Mountains to play one night after you retire to bed.

How to complete Dark Talisman in Stardew Valley

The Wizard in Stardew Valley
Screenshot by Destructoid

After the Mountain cutscene, you’ll receive a letter from the Wizard in the mail. His ex-wife, also known as the Witch, has some magic ink in her house that needs to be retrieved. Unfortunately, you can’t just rock up to the Witch’s Hut and ask for it back - you need to find the Dark Talisman first, which will grant you access to the Swamp.

To complete the Dark Talisman, you’ll need to first talk to Krobus. He can unlock a door within the Sewers that leads to the Mutant Bug Lair. Head inside, and you’ll find the Dark Talisman after battling through, as the name suggests, some mutant bugs.

Once you’ve got the Dark Talisman, head north to the Railroad area and find the cave in the top right corner. You’ll be able to place the Talisman on the artifact blocking the entrance and proceed through the cave.

Make sure to take some Void Mayonnaise with you when you enter the Swamp. You’ll need to give it to the Witch’s Henchman, completing another quest called Goblin Problem and allowing you further into the Swamp. Head into the Witch’s Hut and you’ll find the magic ink on a table, which you can pick up and return to the Wizard to complete Dark Talisman.

What to do at the Witch’s Swamp in Stardew Valley

Shrines inside the Witch's Hut in Stardew Valley

There are a few things that you can do once you’ve gained access to the Witch’s Swamp. There are a couple of fish there, Void Salmon and Catfish. Void Salmon don’t spawn anywhere else, and Catfish only appear on rainy days.

The main draw of the Witch’s Swamp, though, is the Witch’s Hut itself. Inside, you’ll find three different shrines, all of which are useful in a different way and need a specific offering to use:

Shrine Effect Required offering
Dark Shrine of Memory Erases the memory of all past spouses (including Krobus), allowing you to build relationships with them again. 30,000 Gold
Dark Shrine of Selfishness Turns any existing children into doves, permanently removing them from a playthrough 1 Prismatic Shard
Dark Shrine of Night Terrors You can use this shrine to toggle monsters appearing on your farm at night on and off. Works on all farm maps. 1 Strange Bun (per use)

While the Ghostfish isn’t the most valuable fish, even when a high quality one is smoked, you do need one for a few different things and they can give some particularly useful items when in a Fish Pond, but more on that later.

You can catch a Ghostfish on levels 20 and 60 of the Mines in Stardew Valley

If you’re after a Ghostfish in Stardew Valley, I’m afraid you have little choice but to head into the Mines. Once inside, if you want to actually catch the fish, you’ll need to head down to either floor 20 or floor 60 in order to fish there.

If you’re wanting to test your mettle, or hoping to avoid Fishing, you can battle some Ghosts between floors 51 and 79 of the Mines. They have an 8% chance to drop a Ghostfish when defeated.

There’s a small chance that the Traveling Cart will stock a Ghostfish at any time, as they’re part of the vendor's rotating stock. If a Ghostfish does show up, it will cost between 135 and 1,000 Gold to purchase.

After this, the most efficient way to use a Ghostfish is by putting it into a Fish Pond. A Ghostfish will reproduce every 2 days, providing that you’ve got the capacity, and can possibly provide the following items:

Provided item # of Ghostfish in Pond Chance to drop per day
1 Roe 1-2
3-8
9-10
23-31%
36-73%
62-68%
1 Quartz 3-8
9-10
3-6%
5-6%
3 Quartz 9-10 10-11%
5 White Algae 9-10 4-5%
1 Refined Quartz 9-10 4%
3 Pale Broth 9-10 1.5-2%

A Ghostfish can be used in the spool of a Sewing Machine to create a Dyeable Fish Shirt, and in order to expand other Fish Pond's capacity from 7-10, two Ghostfish can be requested by Dorado, Lingcod, or Pike.

If all else fails, you can always simply sell your excess Ghostfish. They sell for between 54 and 135 Gold before smoking, depending on whether you have the Fisher and Angler professions chosen.

Official Stardew Valley Cookbook Makes It Easy to Cook Homey Meals

Given it is a farming sim, we’ve always been able to cook in Stardew Valley. Making meals to eat ourselves, give as gifts, or ship out for money is a critical part of the gameplay experience. Since it is based upon actual farming and cooking, many of these look familiar and, well, like things we can accomplish ourselves. So now, we’re about to see Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone and Ryan Novak release an actual Official Stardew Valley Cookbook that taps into all that on May 14, 2024, and it does so in a way that keeps cooking accessible.

So the first thing I really liked about the Official Stardew Valley Cookbook is that instead of being divided into things like appetizers, main courses, sides, and desserts, it is split into seasons. Given we’re just about to head into spring and the farmer’s market near me is about to be open every week, I was really excited to see how I could take advantage of that. The Cheese Cauliflower was the first thing I made. The instructions were easy to follow, it didn’t require too many ingredients, and I felt like when it was done that someone could have easily adjusted the recipe to omit the garlic or thyme if they aren’t a fan.

Reprinted from The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook by ConcernedApe and Ryan Novak. © 2024 by ConcernedApe LLC. Published by Random House Worlds, an imprint of Random House, a division of Penguin Random House LLC.

There’s a nice balance of recipes I recognized from Stardew Valley as well. So this isn’t a situation where there will be meals or items “inspired” by the game, but that I actually remembered making when in the game. So you aren’t going to see Algae Soup, but things like Lucky Lunch, Maki Roll, and Survival Burger are all there. I didn’t make the Survival Burger myself, just because the number of items needed was a lot and eggplant isn’t my thing, but it’s there and seemed really accurate! Not to mention, it’s also one of many dishes that could be made vegatarian or vegan-friendly with a few minor alterations during the preparation process.

What’s also a nice touch is that even though everything is arranged by season, I didn’t feel like it was too restrictive when reading through the recipes. While The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook version of Stir Fry includes shiitake mushrooms, purple carrots, and yellow onions, I substituted in traditional orange carrots and opted for broccoli instead of mushrooms. It was still great. And like, I still made the Banana Pudding that was in there, and it being a “Summer” recipe didn’t make it any more difficult to complete even though it is April.

Reprinted from The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook by ConcernedApe and Ryan Novak. © 2024 by ConcernedApe LLC. Published by Random House Worlds, an imprint of Random House, a division of Penguin Random House LLC.

Plus, The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook maintains the right atmosphere. Recipes are attributed to characters from the game, like Linus or Pam. Other characters from the game will offer “comments” on each one. The art for each one is inspired by the actual game, with photos of actual food photographs scattered throughout.

I really like what Concerned Ape and Novak accomplished with The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook. There are a lot of matter of fact, fairly simple recipes here clearly taken from the game. All involve food you would eat on a regular basis, so it’s genuinely practical. Plus the vibes are impeccable and really capture the spirit of the game. It feels like a fun complement to the game.

The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook will appear on May 14, 2024. It will be available digitally or physically. Stardew Valley is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PCs, mobile devices, and the PlayStation Vita. Stardew Valley is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PCs, mobile devices, and the PlayStation Vita.

Barone confirmed a new update was on the way last week, teasing "a new fishing thing, and some new mining related stuff". Turns out Barone might have been underselling things a bit. Update 1.6.4 kicks off its patch notes with 20 new 'alternate' mine layouts - which can start appearing after players reach the bottom of mines - plus 20 new volcano mine layouts, which can appear after unlocking the shortcut between the caldera and the volcano entrance.

And there's more! Barone's mysterious "fishing thing" has revealed itself to be fish frenzies, and they're joined by four new fairy types, as well as a "special cutscene" that triggers after players help their new neighbours grow their family to the max. Additionally, it's now possible to place an extra eight non-fish items into fish tanks, mystery boxes and golden mystery boxes can be traded at Raccoon's shop, vinegar can be poured onto trees to stop them from ever growing moss, and the shaving enhancement now causes tree-specific drops.

Stardew Valley Pufferfish

Pufferfish is a delicacy in some places. You can get in on the “eat dangerously, die satisfied” mindset in Stardew Valley if you use the right bait and fish in the right spot.

Pufferfish are ocean fish, and they can only be caught on the mainland during the Summer. However, for every other season, they can be caught on Ginger Island. This means that you’ll be fishing from the beach on the mainland, or Ginger Island’s Pirate Cove, or South, Southeast, and Western shores.

If you’re in need of a Pufferfish and it isn’t Summer, you can also use Magic Bait which let’s you catch any fish regardless of the season.

The Pufferfish can be a bit tricky to catch as they tend to move up and down quickly as if they’re bouncing in the water. You might want to use a Trap Bobber for Pufferfish to make it less likely that they’ll escape while you’re trying to reel them in.

You can also sometimes find them in garbage cans during the Summer, for some reason. And, like many things, it is sometimes for sale at the Traveling Cart for 600 to 1000 G.

Once you have a Pufferfish, you can turn it into sashimi. It can also be used as an ingredient in Quality Fertilizer and Maki Rolls. It also can be used as part of the Specialty Fish Bundle in the community center fish tank.

Stardew Valley Prismatic Stone

Everyone likes pretty rocks, and in Stardew Valley, none is prettier than the Prismatic Shard. But beyond just looking really nice on a shelf and feeling good in your pocket, the Prismatic Shard has a number of important uses.

First, we’re going to tackle how to find one, then we’ll discuss what to do with it.

Places to get a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley

A Prismatic Shard is a rare find, but it’s not one that’s unique. Like many things in Stardew Valley, it’s usually a matter of chance to find one, but here are some places:

  • You’re guaranteed to find one when you first reach the top of the Volcano on Ginger Island.
  • There’s a chance to get one from Iridium deposits in the Volcano, Quarry, and Skull Cavern.
  • They often appear in Mystic Stones found in the Mine (below floor 100), Quarry, and Skull Cavern.
  • They sometimes appear in the treasure rooms that appear in Skull Cavern.
  • Prismatic Shards can be found in meteors that occasionally crush your crops and paths.
  • Mystery boxes and golden mystery boxes sometimes contain Prismatic Shards.
  • There’s a very small chance you will get one from opening an Omni Geode.
  • There’s also a very small chance you can find one in a fishing chest (after fishing level 6).
  • Wilderness and Iridium Golems occasionally drop Prismatic Shards.
  • The Statue of Perfection will produce one Prismatic Shard each day.
  • Shadow Brutes and Shaman, serpents, and mummies all rarely drop one.

Chances are, you’ll just come across Prismatic Shard as you play late into Stardew Valley. Aside from the Statue of Perfection and the volcano, there aren’t really any guaranteed ways to find them, so it’s better to just relax and wait for them to come to you.

What to do with Prismatic Shards in Stardew Valley

You might already have something in mind for what to do with a Prismatic Shard. But if not, here is everything you can use them for.

  • In multiplayer, you can craft one into a Wedding ring to get hitched with another player.
  • You can donate one to the Museum.
  • They can be used to enchant tools in the Forge (in the Volcano).
  • Used with a Sewing Machine, you can craft prismatic clothing.
  • If you feed one to the Dark Shrine of Selfishness, your children will turn into doves(!?).
  • It’s one of the items that you can use for the Missing Bundle, which unlocks the Movie Theater.
  • If you hold one and walk between the three pillars in Calico Desert, you’ll get the Galaxy Sword.
  • The Desert Trader will give you a Magic Rock Candy if you hand over three Prismatic Shards.
  • It can simply be gifted to an NPC. Everyone loves them except Haley who finds them gross for some reason.

So whether you’re grossing someone out or wishing your children away, there’s plenty of reason to keep hold of every Prismatic Shard you find in your farming adventures.

Stardew Valley gets yet another update, adding new mine layouts and ominous-sounding "fish frenzies"

It's starting to feel like ConcernedApe (aka Eric Barone) may in fact be a modern day Sisiphus, destined to work on Stardew Valley forever. Following on from the mega update of 1.6 a month ago, and 1.6.3 soon after that, the hardy perennial farming game has a new 1.6.4 mini update. The key addition this time is more new layouts that will appear after you reach the bottom of the mines, and more layouts for the volcano mines too. If you've not played Stardew Valley you might wonder why there are deep mines and volcanos, and to you I say "Pah! You should play Stardew Valley."

1.6.4 also has a lot of bug fixes (including fixing disappearing pets, new pets being a key feature of 1.6) and some balance changes, as well as a host of fixes for modders and modded players. ConcernedApe said early on that 1.6 would be an update for modders, so it's nice to see that being supported. You can read the full patch notes here.

I've always thought it strange that games should include fishing - games that aren't about fishing, that is. Take World of Warcraft as an example, a game that's included below: it's already a game that sucks away your time, so why would you want to do something even more time-consuming like fishing within it? Yet, fishing has definitely become a thing. There isn't a crafting game or an online game that goes by without fishing included. It's become a must-have. I only wish I had the patience for it. Do you?

Stardew Valley is celebrating its eighth anniversary today (yes, I couldn't believe it either) and developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has marked the occasion by announcing a release date for his beloved farm-life sim's eagerly awaited 1.6 update - which is coming to PC on 19th March, with a console and mobile release to follow "as soon as possible".

Stardew Valley's 1.6 update was revealed to be in the works back in June 2022, when Barone warned it would be relatively modest in scope and 'mostly modding-focused'. Since then, however, it's ballooned substantially, with Barone so far confirming it'll bring one major new festival and two new mini festivals, new items and crafting recipes, new dialogue lines, a new farm type, new late-game content, winter outfits for villagers, a new larger chest, 8-player co-op on PC, plus - most importantly of all - hats for cats and dogs.

It was exactly one month ago today that Barone last shared a progress report on 1.6's development, revealing he was "done adding major new content" and that it would "definitely" release this year - and we now have an exact date to mark in our calendars.

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has marked the 8th birthday of his farming sim phenomenon baby (also called Stardew Valley) by announcing the impending release of update 1.6. The PC version - the one we care about - is arriving on the 19th of March, and consoles and mobile as soon as possible after that. The actual content of update 1.6 is largely a mystery, but Barone has teased a few things here and there, including that it's "mostly changers for modders" that'll make it "easier and more powerful to mod".
