Marvel Cosmic Invasion Review

1. Prosinec 2025 v 17:00

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is a nostalgia-soaked love letter to nine-year-old you. A side-scrolling beat ‘em up that looks like it just stepped out of a 90’s arcade, Cosmic Invasion features the character design of Marvel’s comic heyday, pixel-art visuals that ape Capcom’s Super Hero fighting series, and a tag team mechanic that is pure X-Men vs. Street Fighter. In short, with this much 90’s nostalgia powering it, how can Marvel Cosmic Invasion possibly fail?

Marvel big bad Annihilus wants to take over the universe and it’s up to you and three friends – either online or local in very slick drop-in drop-out multiplayer – to stop him. The story is suitably silly and slight. The, thankfully skippable, static cutscenes bracketing each level are completely incomprehensible scrolling beat ‘em up hokum, but the opening animated intro and accompanying theme-song is an unadulterated delight, perfectly capturing the essence of the iconic X-Men cartoon. You’ll be listening to it on repeat on your chosen music streaming platform of choice, let me tell you.

With an impressive character roster of 15 heroes, Cosmic Invasion certainly offers a stacked cast of Marvel do-gooders. There’s the expected A-listers like Spider-Man, Wolverine and Iron Man, but also a few more niche picks, such as Beta-Ray Bill, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and Phyla-Vell. Whilst I would have personally liked developer Tribute Games to delve a little deeper in the weeds of the Marvel character back catalogue – Marvel Rivals did this  with Jeff the Land Shark, turning the diminutive hero into a fan favourite and star of numerous comics in the process – the overall depth and breadth of the line-up really can’t be faulted.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion four player co-op

What can be faulted is the variance in how much fun the characters are to play as. Flying characters suffer the most, the cost of being able to hover around the place a bit is seemingly being lumbered with a vastly reduced move-set. Storm is a total snore-fest, with only a handful of attacks on offer, whilst Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Phoenix and Phyla-Vell struggled to get much play time, simply because they can’t do very much. A couple of basic attacks, a range attack and a special? It’s not much terribly exciting. Plus, the insistence on flying heroes and enemies is unnecessarily fiddly, it’s often difficult to tell where you and your enemy are, resulting in a lot of accidental punching of thin air.

Wolverine and Black Panther are both superb, however, with varied combos and juggles putting their flying counterparts to shame. She Hulk’s range of pro-wrestling themed moves are brilliant fun to unleash, and Venom and Spider-Man deliver all the web-based antics a fan could hope for. The impressive sounding 15 character roster is quickly reduced down to five heroes you’ll actually want to play as, with the rest acting in a support role, leaping into the action with a brief bonus attack at the touch of a button.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Sentinel battle

If the heroes are well catered for, the villains they’ll be punching are not. Considering the vast universe of characters Tribute Games could call upon to include, they picked some lame ducks here. Most of the time you’ll be beating-up the exact same bug-like minions, only they’ll be painted in slightly different colours from level to level. Sure, there’s a few Sentinels to take on and some symbiotes, but mostly you’ll spend your time battling big mutated bees. Where’s the Kree? The Skrulls? The Chitauri? For a game set in the galaxy-spanning Marvel Cosmic comics, the lack of decent bad guys to duff up feels like the waste of an iconic licence.

Boss fights are also quite boring, even if they do feature a decent range of Marvel villains. No matter if you’re facing Knull, The Phoenix, or MODOK, your enemy will launch the same limited range of attacks and will soon be defeated without much effort. Indeed, for a game aping a 90’s coin-up, Marvel Cosmic Invasion is unexpectedly easy, offering little challenge and only occasionally pushing back against the player. My partner and I only had one or two re-starts and saw off the entire game in a couple of hours. We had little use for the tag-team mechanic either. Sure, you can swap in and out characters to deliver a massive juggling combo – so long as you don’t pick a flyer as a partner – buy why bother when a few punches will kill most opponents?

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Rocket Raccoon and Ghost Rider

Worse, the levels themselves are oddly dull and repetitive. Scrolling beat ‘em ups are hardly known for their variety when it comes to level design, but Streets of Rage 4, Absolum, and Tribute Games own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge prove it can be done. With no weapon pick-ups, no vehicles to drive or mounts to ride, no new moves to unlock, and the aforementioned limited range of enemies, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, even with its short run time, ultimately becomes a bit of a slog.

Despite all of the over-the-top visuals with nostalgia dripping loveliness then, playing Marvel Cosmic Invasion is just a bit, well, boring.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Review: A Gorgeous But Brief Super-Powered Brawler

3. Prosinec 2025 v 17:28

There’s something magical about gathering friends around a screen to punch through waves of enemies together. Marvel Cosmic Invasion understands this perfectly, delivering a beat ’em up that feels like it belongs in the golden age of arcade cabinets – except now you’ve got 15 Marvel heroes to choose from instead of feeding quarters into a machine.

Tribute Games, the masterminds behind TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, have crafted another side-scrolling brawler that’s bursting with personality. From the moment you select your tag-team duo and dive into the campaign, it’s clear this isn’t just another licensed cash-grab. This is a carefully designed celebration of Marvel’s cosmic corner, wrapped in some of the most beautiful pixel art you’ll see this year.

A Roster That Actually Feels Different

The character selection screen is where Marvel Cosmic Invasion first shows its ambition. Sure, you’ve got your expected heavy hitters – Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine – but then things get interesting. She-Hulk functions as a full-blown grappler instead of just being “female Hulk.” Cosmic Ghost Rider brings his own bizarre flavor. Beta Ray Bill and Phyla-Vell might make casual fans scratch their heads, but their inclusion adds genuine depth to the roster.

What impressed me most wasn’t just the quantity of characters, but how distinct each one feels. Captain America’s shield throw ricochets across the screen, juggling enemies in the air and creating combo opportunities that feel uniquely his. Wolverine plays like an absolute berserker, latching onto enemies with his claws and tearing them apart. She-Hulk’s wrestling-focused moveset was a genuine surprise – her grabs and throws create a completely different rhythm compared to traditional brawlers.

The flying characters (roughly half the roster) add another dimension to combat. Storm, Iron Man, Nova, and others can dominate aerial space, while grounded fighters like Captain America and Venom excel at controlling the floor. Some heroes block and parry, others dodge. These aren’t just cosmetic differences – they fundamentally change how you approach each encounter. Though I’ll admit, blocking feels way more useful than dodging since a well-timed block triggers a parry. The dodge mechanics could use some love.

Tag-Team Mechanics Add Surprising Depth

Here’s where Marvel Cosmic Invasion distinguishes itself from the pack. You don’t just pick one character – you select two heroes who fight as a tag-team. At any moment, you can swap between them or call your benched hero in for an assist attack. Each character maintains their own health bar and Focus gauge (used for special attacks), creating strategic layers beyond “mash buttons until everything dies.”

The assist system opens up creative combo possibilities. Launch an enemy into the air with Captain America, swap to Wolverine mid-flight, then call Cap back in for his special while Wolverine continues the assault. With four players each controlling two heroes, battles become absolute chaos in the best possible way. Enemy feet might not touch the ground once your team gets rolling. It’s the kind of over-the-top action that makes you grin like an idiot.

Though I should mention – some characters feel significantly stronger than others. Phyla-Vell’s special hits basically the entire screen, while Venom’s requires you to be uncomfortably close to enemies. These balance quirks aren’t game-breaking, but they’re noticeable when you’re experimenting with the full roster.

Campaign and Content: Gorgeous But Brief

The campaign takes you through iconic Marvel locations rendered in stunning pixel art. From New York to Wakanda to literal cosmic realms like Valhalla, the visual variety is impressive. Tribute’s pixel artists deserve serious recognition – some backgrounds are almost distractingly beautiful. You’ll spot references to the Daily Bugle, witness the bug invasion happening in real-time behind your brawls, and encounter famous Marvel villains as bosses (some of whom join your roster afterward).

But here’s the reality check: the campaign lasts about 3-4 hours. That’s not a typo. For a $30 game, it feels surprisingly short, even by beat ’em up standards. Completionists might squeeze 15-20 hours by leveling every character, completing mission-specific challenges, and unlocking all the cosmetic rewards, but the core content is lean.

Arcade mode offers traditional beat ’em up structure with gameplay modifiers to increase difficulty, which helps with replayability. You can crank enemy counts to four-player levels while playing solo, double enemy health, or enable various other challenges. These modifiers add longevity for players who want to push the combat system to its limits, though the unlockables (palette swaps, music tracks, lore entries) aren’t particularly exciting rewards.

The levels themselves, while gorgeous, lack mechanical variety. You’re mostly walking left to right, fighting enemy waves, then facing a boss. No vehicle sections, no interesting traversal gimmicks – just straightforward brawling. Some boss fights feature clever gimmicks, but others feel disappointingly basic. The final boss, oddly enough, ranks among the least memorable despite being your climactic encounter.

The Verdict on This Cosmic Brawl

Marvel Cosmic Invasion nails what matters most in a beat ’em up: the moment-to-moment combat feels fantastic, especially with friends. The tag-team system adds genuine depth, the roster variety encourages experimentation (105 possible two-character combinations!), and the pixel art presentation is consistently gorgeous. Tee Lopes’ soundtrack provides an appropriately heroic backdrop, even if no individual track became an earworm for me.

The brevity stings, though. This feels like the foundation for something greater, and hints throughout the story suggest DLC might be coming (following the Shredder’s Revenge model). But right now, at launch, you’re getting a polished but compact experience that might leave you wanting more content to justify that price tag.

If you’re a Marvel fan who loves classic beat ’em ups, this is an easy recommendation, especially if you’ve got co-op partners ready to assemble. Just know you’re getting quality over quantity – a short but sweet cosmic adventure that respects your time while delivering genuine fun. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Unites Iconic Heroes in Stunning Opening Animation

It’s been a great year for beat ’em up fans (not counting Double Dragon Revive), and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, which launches next week, looks to close it off in style. Tribute Games and Dotemu have released the beat ’em up’s intro animation, showcasing all 15 heroes battling classic villains. Check it out below.

For those who never read the comics, the powerful Annihilus is bringing death and destruction to the universe with his Annihilation Wave. However, he’s also enlisted villains like Taskmaster, M.O.D.O.K., Sauron and more to help. Players select two heroes from the roster, including Captain America, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Wolverine, Storm, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and more, to meet them in battle.

You probably noticed I said “two” heroes. That’s because Marvel Cosmic Invasion features a unique mechanic called Cosmic Swap, where you can tag back and forth between heroes. Call them in for assists to augment your damage or build upon your sick combos.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is available on December 1st for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It’s also available on day one for Game Pass. While perfectly playable solo (see for yourself in the free demo), it also supports drop-in/drop-out co-op, both locally and online with crossplay.
