The State of Streaming Channels at Our House in 2024

18. Srpen 2024 v 17:15

In our house I am the master of channels.  I am the one who unsubscribes from services we’re not watching, re-subscribes to services when there is something for us, and makes sure we don’t get signed up until a show we’re interested in has a full season available.

A mere four years ago we were at a point that felt almost like a renaissance of streaming content… we were all stuck inside and in need of something to do and streaming channels were there to deliver.  And then we got a vaccine, decided the pandemic was over, and realized that maybe we didn’t need a subscription to 17 different streaming services.

Netflix

Meanwhile, all the players who got into the streaming service game, having been lulled by the seemingly effortless success of Netflix, found themselves in a bit of a bind as they found this was not a cheap and easy path to riches even as people began trimming back on their subscription count.  This led to the need to raise prices, which drove even more people to dump their offering.

Still, the strong will prevail and, after some closures and a series of mergers… there are still probably too damn many channels.  More than we can afford to subscribe to continuously, so this is where we are at.

After more of four years of peaks and valleys and industry strife, these are the channels we end up watching.

The Long Haul Keepers

These are the services which we remain subscribed to pretty much always.  They have, on some level, a reason or a proven value to keep them around.

  • Netflix

This is the one service we subscribe to continuously and watch most regularly, and it is largely because they throw more content at us than any two or three other services combined.  Sure, a lot of it is garbage, and most of it isn’t for us, but every Friday night they have a selection of content added to their service to choose from.

Add in that they drop a full season at a time so you can binge to your heart’s content and that they have probably one of the best apps by most measures, and you can see why I never bother to put Netflix on the bench.

Finally, their app works.  It is fast, responsive, comprehensible, and doesn’t assume I can read the tiny title card from across the room.  It also skips the “previously” section if I just watched the previous episode and lets me skip the beginning and end credits successfully.

That said, they just announced that they are cancelling my $12 a month plan and enrolling me in a $7 a month plan with ads.  Netflix promises it will just be a couple of ads at the beginning of some programming, but we’ll have to see how it goes.  The other alternative is $18 a month for no ads, and then we’re getting into the “you need to prove your value every month” zone of streaming services.

  • Amazon Prime Video

I think it is just called Prime Video honestly, but I always put “Amazon” in there to remind myself that this is part of our Amazon Prime subscription, which is something we keep even when we’re not watching any of their shows.

So, technically, it is the other service we subscribe to continuously, but if my annual Prime member ship was just for it, I would cancel it in a heartbeat.  But I get other benefits from my Prime membership that make it worthwhile, so technically we subscribe to Prime Video.

The problem is that while they occasionally pull off something good… the recent Fallout series is a “prime” example… there otherwise isn’t a lot of new content there, and much of what is new isn’t very good.  If you missed some straight-to-video bad science fiction film, Prime is apparently where they all end up.

It is also very much in the business of bait and switch, where they will get a series from another service like Starz or MGM+ and show you a season… or, in one case, the first season MINUS the final episode… the prompt you to subscribe to that service… through them, of course, so they get a cut… which does not make me happy.  I have gone off and subscribed due to this at times, though I always go directly to that service, like Starz, and contract with them direction so Prime does not get a cut.

This is, in part, out of spite, but also because the Prime Video app isn’t great.  It is not the worst, but it is at best mid-pack.  It is slow, it can be hard to see, browsing for shows is not great, and it is really hit and miss about whether it will let you skip the “previously” or opening credits and just hates when you try to skip the end credits to start another show.  This is likely, in part, to them just showing a lot of content from other services, which they put the minimal effort into adapting to their app.

Finally, despite paying for access to Prime, if I don’t want to get ads during shows, I have to pay extra.  This, as you might expect, irks me and I will not pay their ransom.  The only upside to this is that they don’t show ads on all content, though amusingly some content an ad comes up to tell you the video will be ad free thanks to a specific sponsor, for who an ad then plays.

TL:DR – Not great, but comes with a package I never cancel.

  • Apple TV+

Apple is in an interesting niche in that it is just cheap enough and the content is high enough quality that I don’t rush to cancel our subscription.  There isn’t a lot of new content, and they are still wed to the “let’s stretch out people’s subscription time by showing one episode a week because maybe, this time, we’ll have the next Game of Thrones and everybody will need a full week to discuss the show” routine, which I find irksome.

Our house rule is we don’t start watching anything until it is six episodes in.

The app is also not the best.  When you have something selected on scree it makes that item about 5% larger than it was when not selected, so I often have to move the selection a couple of times to see what has focus on screen.  It is a pain in the ass to just go watch the next episode if you stopped at the start of the credits last time you watched a series.  It wants to resume from exactly where you left off unless you fish around in the app to fine the page for the full series that has the episode list.

But the app does at least run pretty well for us.  I will give it that.

And, like I said, there isn’t a ton of new content.  It is the Anti-Netflix, which just throws a constant stream of new content at you.  So we spend a lot more time watching Netflix because we’ll take a chance on an episode or two of something new or watch some potentially bad movie on a Friday night because the commitment feels low and there are many other options if we bail.

  • KQED Television

I almost forgot about this.  I give public television a regular monthly payment which gives me access to their regular lineup of shows and whatever they import from the UK via Masterpiece Theater.  We used to have half a dozen public television channels in the SF Bay area that each had their own varied content.  They all got scooped up by KQED in San Francisco over the years.  We almost never watch this these days, unless I want to go back and re-visit one of the Ken Burns documentaries, but technically we’re continuously subscribed.  At least when you stream you are not interrupted by pledge drives every few months.

  • Xfinity Stream

Also, I should mention this because, due to the fact that Comcast is our only internet provider option and that they make sure that internet bundles are cheaper if you include cable TV, we still have cable TV at our house.  But on the rare occasion when we want to watch it, we watch it using the app on our Roku Stick.  And, live TV with ads… this is how animals watch TV, right?  Just sitting there and being force to watch whatever is “on” at that very moment?  How did we survive this?

The Frequent Recurring Subscriptions

These are the services that we are often subscribed to, but which get turned off now and then when we run out of content.

  • Disney+

I will echo what I have heard many other say, which is if I still had pre-teen children in the house, I would never unsubscribe from Disney+.  It is also the one stop shop for all things Star Wars and the MCU and the entire 35 year life of The Simpsons.

But our daughter is now a college graduate and my nostalgia for the Disney catalog and the other properties they own isn’t all that strong.  So we’re willing to unsub from this one when we’re done with whatever the latest Star Wars series is.  And, because Disney+ is still locked into the “one episode a week” ploy to get people to string out their subscription for an extra month or two, we don’t subscribe until a season is set.

The app itself is pretty good.  It does group up content well enough and is responsive and doesn’t crash on our Roku stick.

  • Hulu

Some very decent original content.  Will subscribe when a new season of something is out.  They do adhere to the “one episode a week” thing, so I wait until seasons are complete.  They do also get Fox and FX stuff, and at one point I watched literally all of the available episodes of Bob’s Burgers while also watching all available episodes of Archer, both of which feature H. Jon Benjamin voicing the lead role, which was quite a trip.

The app is okay, though it isn’t well organized.  They like to put the “continue watching” piece of the UI way down the main page and prefer to promote their new stuff, so you really have to bookmark the things you like and go to your personal page to get what you want out of the app.

  • Starz

One of the relics of the premium cable channel era, somewhere down the list from HBO and Showtime, its once niche with us is the period piece dramas like The White Queen, The Spanish Princess, and The Serpent Queen get us to subscribe for a while.  They also feature a lot of movies, but everybody has a lot of movies and they are almost never the ones I am in the mood for at any given moment, so somehow that rarely works out.

  • Paramount+

We originally came here to watch Yellowstone then found that this is where all of the Star Trek content lives as well as having a cross programming agreement with Showtime, so there is kind of a lot here.  However, we can get a bit burnt out on it as well.  We’ll watch a few seasons of this or that then stop watching for a while, at which point I will turn off the subscription.  But we do return.

  • AMC+

This is the channel for all things Walking Dead, which my wife is still into because of the soap opera-like drama.  As I noted previously, after a season or two of zombies, people really became the main enemy, while zombies would only show up when the plot demanded.  Decent channel, not too expensive, and AMC has quite a bit of original content.  When something pops up we’ll subscribe for a while.

The At Need Only Channels

These are the services that we only subscribe to for very specific reasons, then cancel ones we’re done.

  • Max

You would think they would be better at this whole streaming things, having been in on that business since the HBO Go app, their first cut at streaming, launched back in 2010.  Then again, the whole thing hasn’t been the same since the end of Game of Thrones.

The old HBO business model was to get people subscribed based on a few prestige series and maybe first access to films that had recently left the theaters, which worked well enough in the age of cable TV and the early days of streaming.  Now films don’t see to be the draw they once were, there are a ton of competitors, and they haven’t quite hit another big winner.

I mean, they can get a show like Succession that gets a lot of awards, but I think Netflix puts out a show about once a month that gets as many or more viewers, and a hit on Netflix will get 5-10x the viewers.

And at one time we would stay subscribed to HBO for years at a stretch.  Now, however, with the consolidation under the Max brand and the removal of back seasons of some shows, and other shows entirely, and their lack of anything really new and good… we went back last to watch season 4 of True Detective and it was okay, but I cancelled the service once we were done

  • Peacock

This was an okay service the first few times we have subscribed, and they did a credible job with the Olympics recently.  I mean, I cannot blame them directly for NBC cutting away from the opening ceremonies to watch the US team standing around waiting to get on their boat.  I know the French are… uniquely French I guess… but they’re still more interesting that Snoop Dogg trying to engage random strangers in conversation or Kelly Clarkson repeating “Oooh, look at that” over and over.  And past that, if you wanted to watch very specific competitions, they let you.  So maybe the most accessible Olympics when it came to video.

But beyond the Olympics it has been degrading as a service.  They are going hard on ad revenue with a cheap subscription.  The problem is that I am fully willing to buy the more expensive ad free option, but they now show you the version of the content that has been cut up for ad injection… without the ads.  What this means is that every so often the show pauses for nearly a full second while the server apparently has to decided on the fly whether or not an ad gets played or not, then moves on when the result comes back negative.

That doesn’t sound bad, until you learn just how many ads Peacock thinks they should inject into 30 minutes of television.  It quickly becomes annoying out of all proportion to the actual duration of the interruption.  It isn’t completely unwatchable, but it just pulls me out of the show and makes my brain think, “Oh, here is another place where they would have put an add had I not given then an extra $8 for a month of service.”

Also, “ad free” did not apply to Olympic coverage, and I am still salty about that.

The Odd Outsiders

Services we have tried once and haven’t really felt the need to return to.

  • Acorn & Britbox

I am lumping these two together because they share the same problem, which is the US view of British television after having been raised on US public television cherry picking the very best and putting it on in front of us via Masterpiece Theater.  We think everything produced in the UK is sophisticated and urbane, performed by actors who are veterans of the Royal Shakespeare Company, with performances delivered in that very specific BBC news reader accent, written by over educated graduates of Cambridge and Oxford, which holds a mirror up to life while making historical and literary references that mean we have to keep Wikipedia to hand in order to keep up.

Some of us grew up on a diet of things like I, Claudius and House of Cards and Monty Python and it skewed our perception.

So a pair of channels filled to the brim with British television content seems like heaven.

The problem is that Upstairs, Downstairs or Downton Abby are not the prototypical British programming, the pinnacle to which the island strives; Benny Hill is.  And even that is a huge cut above the average.  There are a lot of simply unwatchable, predictable, crap shows on Acorn and Britbox.

Finding that for every Prime Suspect there are a dozen dreadful police procedurals out there, often hampered for US audiences with incomprehensible UK regional accents and slang, is enough to burst the myth of British television superiority.  You’re just as bad as us at this TV thing and it is a miracle when you can build a season of television on even three hours of actual content.  At least in the US when we crank out mediocre content, we get 8, 10, 16, even 22 episodes out the door.

I’ll go back to letting US public television cherry picking for me, thank you.

So yeah, we’ve been through both of these channels and found that the good stuff we’ve seen already elsewhere and the rest… is usually not the good stuff.

  • MGM+

We subscribed to this because of a Prime Video bait and switch with the show Monsieur Spade.  They had some content worth watching, but not enough to keep us subscribed and, lacking another screw job from Amazon, there isn’t anything there we’re dying to watch.  I think all the Bond films are available there… but I also have them all on DVD so I am excused from every having to watch them because there are just right there, I could watch them any time I want.

  • Tubi

Technically not a subscription service but a free ad supported venue, one of my nieces that works in Hollywood… I have two such nieces… was working as a producer here so we gave it a try.  Oh man, ads suck, and injected ads suck at least 3x as much because if they don’t have enough ad buys, they will just show you the same damn ad two or three times back to back.

If the future is ad supported, they need to work on that.  It is awful.  Anyway, my niece has another job so I do not feel the need to engage with Tubi anymore.

Conclusions

We wished for a bright future of on demand entertainment where we could select and watch anything we wanted.  But we wished on the monkey’s paw, and as the finger curled down, we were given a patchwork landscape of competing services, shifting content availability, and difficult UIs.

I think the biggest problem is just know what there is out there to watch.  My least favorite thing these days is to sit down on the couch and have my wife ask, “So what should we watch?”  This portends me using the remote to scroll through large sections of half a dozen services to find something that looks good.

This, btw, is why Netflix wins so often for us.  They at least always have something new, something we’re willing to invest at least a bit of time into.  And after about fifteen minutes of my wife vetoing this or that I’m ready to just put anything on so I can stop this futile quest for content.

Using the Roku for streaming helps, as it will search all channels and services for programming and find it.  But you have to know what you are looking for.  If you are doing the streaming equivalent of channel surfing on a Friday night there are just too many places to look.

I know we don’t want to go back to half a dozen channels where you watched what was on or nothing at all, but there was a simplicity to it and a limited scope where you could glance at the TV listings and just decide to read a book or go play a video game.

So what are you watching these days?  Which channel scratches your itch?  And is there any decent new science fiction shows out there?  Is Orphan Black: Echoes any good?  Might have to re-up AMC+ if it is.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 are fresh off the factory, and have launched just today. While we don’t typically see discounts on newly released products, OnePlus is one of the few that make some exceptions. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 actually hit the shelves with a $30 discount on day one. This brings the price down to $150.

Get the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 for just $150

This offer is available straight from OnePlus’ website. The discount applies to both color variants: Midnight Opus and Lunar Radiance, otherwise known as black and white.

OnePlus is known for offering good-value earbuds at a lower price than most of its competitors. Such is the case with the OnePlus Buds Pro 3. These earbuds deliver a dual-driver design, as each earbud has an 11mm woofer, a 6mm tweeter, and two DACs per unit. They are also tuned by the famous music studio Dynaudio.

The case is small, with a lovely matte finish that makes it feel more premium than the price would suggest. It looks and feels much like leather, which also gives it a touch of elegance. OnePlus has added gesture controls, allowing you to swipe and tap on the earbud stems to control audio playback.

The battery life is excellent, at about 43 hours, counting the charge in the case. You’ll also get cool features like Google Fast Pair, dual device connection, wireless charging, and an IP55 rating for water resistance. These even come with spatial audio and noise canceling that is upgraded.

Want in on this sale? You should probably sign up sooner rather than later. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earbuds are brand-new, which makes us think this may be a launch offer that will disappear in due time.

Of course, if you want other options, we have a list of the best wireless earbuds you can buy right now. There are plenty of alternatives there!

  • The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 feature key upgrades like dual DACs, better active noise cancelation, and Google’s Spatial Audio technology.
  • You can buy the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 for $180 / £199 / €199 starting today.

OnePlus’s earbuds have occupied a key spot in the hearts of Android fans. OnePlus has a few options across price points, and they are good value earbuds that pair well with your Android flagship. After launching the OnePlus Buds 3 earlier in the year, the company is now launching the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 as the latest product in its Pro-tier earbud lineup.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 has a dual-driver design, with an 11mm woofer and a 6mm tweeter in each earbud. OnePlus has also added two DACs (BES2700ZP) per earbud, focusing individually on the woofer and tweeter. The Buds Pro 3 also feature Dynaudio branding on the case and the earbud, reminding you that the earbuds are tuned by the famous music studio.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 also features up to 50dB of active noise cancelation alongside an Adaptive mode that automatically adjusts the noise cancelation level. The company also claims better performance in canceling out voices.

Another highlight of the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 is the new design. OnePlus had been reusing the same design on its past earbuds for some generations. The new Buds Pro 3 changes it up completely with a new case design that houses the earbuds in a vertical position, much like AirPods. However, the CMF (Color Material Finish) on the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 is superior to the AirPods Pro 2, making OnePlus’s earbuds feel more premium than their price tag.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 3’s plastic case has a great matte finish for the holding surface, a leather-like finish for the front and back surfaces, and a glossy finish on the inside.

The earbuds themselves do not change much in shape, though they also have a matte finish on the head and a glossy finish on the stem.

More importantly, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 now let you swipe on the stem to control the volume and tap to control playback. OnePlus has also switched to Google’s Spatial Audio technology, opening up compatibility with the wider Android ecosystem.

With their case, these earbuds promise up to 43 hours of total listening time. They also support Google Fast Pair, dual device connection, Bluetooth 5.4, and wireless charging and have an IP55 rating. Interestingly, these also support new neck health features to help you not slouch for extended periods of time.

We’re in the second half of the year and we’ve already seen plenty of leaks about next-generation flagship phones. Now, a long-time leaker has posted images showing what these new-generation phones could look like.

Digital Chat Station posted drawings showing off numerous upcoming flagship phones from various Chinese manufacturers. For starters, the tipster posted images of what appears to be the OPPO Find X8 Ultra and vivo X200 series.

The Hasselblad logo and alert slider suggest we’re indeed looking at the Find X8 Ultra. Meanwhile, the logo in the center of the apparent vivo phone has the same shape as the ZEISS logo used on vivo X series devices.

Digital Chat Station also posted an image showing four upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 flagship phones from various sub-brands. Check out the picture below.

Digital Chat Station Redmi OnePlus Iqoo Realme

The tipster didn’t dish out any names, but some followers have surmised that we’re looking at devices from Redmi, Realme, Iqoo, and OnePlus, respectively. Other followers have swapped Realme and OnePlus, which makes sense as there doesn’t appear to be an alert slider on the fourth phone. Nevertheless, Iqoo also makes sense as the third phone given the brand’s propensity for squircle-shaped camera housings.

In any event, Qualcomm and MediaTek are tipped to launch their next-generation flagship processors in October. Digital Chat Station claimed that a variety of OEMs will launch phones powered by these chips in October and November. They specifically pointed to the Redmi K80 series, vivo X200 range, OPPO Find X8 family, Xiaomi 15 series, Iqoo 13, OnePlus 13, Realme GT7 Pro, and HONOR Magic 7 phones. Global availability is another story, though.

Games leaving PS Plus (Last Chance to Play)

PS Plus members have renewed calls for more notice on games leaving the service. This has been a recurring complaint since the revamp because Sony often gives players as little as one week to wrap up their progress, which isn’t enough when it comes to lengthy games. There have also been occasions where Sony didn’t announce a departure until the very last minute.

When does Sony typically announce the list of games leaving PS Plus?

Sony provides a preliminary list of games leaving the service shortly after a catalog refresh. As an example, September 2024’s departures were announced today after new games were added to the service this morning.

However, as emphasized above, these are preliminary lists. Sony may remove games without a warning — like it has done so in the past — or give as little as a few days notice.

Players refreshed their demand for more notice after they discovered that Sea of Stars and Lost Judgment — both lengthy games — were added to PS Store’s ‘Last Chance to Play’ section with barely two weeks’ notice. Forums like Reddit and ResetEra saw members asking fellow players if there was a way to expedite their progress before the games left the service.

Given that there are hundreds of games in the catalog, Sony should endeavor to provide one-month notice for departures. We don’t see a good reason why this isn’t possible or why this shouldn’t be the case. Random updates with little notice are quite a nuisance.

Do note that this list isn’t final because Sony updates the PS Store’s ‘Last Chance to Play’ section randomly during the month. This means that you may have as much as a one-month notice or as little as a one-week notice of departures.

This is particularly bothersome when lengthy games are suddenly added to the list. This month, we saw numerous complaints about the sudden announcement of Sea of Stars and Lost Judgment leaving the catalogs with little notice as both games are pretty chunky.

We’ll update the list above if/when more games are added to ‘Last Chance to Play.’

In news that will delight some and disappoint others, Disney has canceled Star Wars series The Acolyte after just one season, Deadline Hollywood reports. The eight-episode series got off to a fairly strong start, with mostly positive reviews and solid ratings, albeit lower than prior Star Wars series. But it couldn't maintain and build upon that early momentum, and given the production costs, it's not especially surprising that Disney pulled the plug.

The Acolyte arguably wrapped up its major narrative arc pretty neatly in the season finale, but it also took pains to set the stage for a possible sophomore season. In this streaming age, no series is ever guaranteed renewal. Still, it would have been nice to see what showrunner Leslye Headland had planned; when given the chance, many shows hit their stride on those second-season outings.

(Spoilers for the series below. We'll give you another heads-up when we get to major spoilers.)

Horizon Forbidden West leaves PlayStation Plus Extra in Europe next month

Sony's own action-adventure game Horizon: Forbidden West is strangely leaving the PlayStation Plus Extra lineup next month. What makes it even odder is that only Europeans will be affected by this move.

While North Americans miss out on playing the Destroy All Humans franchise through PlayStation Plus Extra in September, Europeans are losing multiple highlight games, including Marvel's Midnight Suns, Nier Replicant, and Horizon: Forbidden West. It was shown in the "Last Chance to Play" section of the service.

Another Horizon game was taken off PlayStation Plus Extra in May

It made sense when Horizon: Zero Dawn left PlayStation Plus back in May as there's a rumor a remaster is in the works. However, the already PS5-released Forbidden West being taken off PlayStation's own service seems to be a mistake to fans. It seems like the company is cutting its own foot, and it's a lovely foot at that. You wouldn't think Netflix would remove Stranger Things, for example.

As highlighted by GameSpot, the full list of PlayStation Plus Extra games leaving the service in Europe next month includes:

  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Marvel's Midnight Suns
  • Alien Isolation
  • Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139...
  • Spiritfarer
  • Star Ocean: First Departure R
  • Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
  • Star Ocean: The Last Hope 4K & Full HD Remaster
  • Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness
  • Star Ocean: The Divine Force

North Americans, however, will miss out on these games:

  • NBA 2K24
  • Need for Speed Unbound
  • Destroy All Humans!
  • Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed
  • Spellforce: Reforged
  • Trials of Mana
  • Lost Judgment
  • Moving Out 2
  • Midnight Fight Express
  • Sea of Stars

A sign to come?

Hopefully, the removal of Horizon Forbidden West isn't a sign to come for the service. It currently has other first-party titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, and Sackboy's Big Adventure. You'd hope that PlayStation adds to the service more than it takes away. Thankfully, a promising indie called The Plucky Squire is heading to PlayStation Plus Extra on day one.

The OnePlus Open Apex Challenges Samsung Foldable Dominance

The market for foldable smartphones has exploded, with every major manufacturer offering its own take on the concept. While Samsung led the pack when it first introduced the Galaxy Z Fold to the world, things have gotten a lot more competitive recently, with brands like OnePlus offering better value for money with the OnePlus Open for people looking to make the leap to a foldable device. Now, months after its initial launch, the new OnePlus Open Apex Edition is here, and even in this competitive market, it manages to hold its own as a great option for people looking to make a foldable phone their next investment.

Starting things off, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is a special version of the OnePlus Open inspired by the iconic Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition. It features a premium vegan leather back with a diamond pattern, complemented by bold orange accents on the Alert Slider. The changes don’t stop there, though; it also features 1TB of storage, compared to the 512GB on the standard edition, and will feature VIP Mode, a special mode that also allows you to cut off access to the camera and microphone, at the same time you mute sound.

First and foremost, even though this is the top-of-the-range edition of the OnePlus Open, the Apex still manages to match Samsung’s $1,899.99 price tag for their base model of the latest Z Fold 6. If you can do without the special extras the OnePlus Open Apex offers, the standard edition with 512GB of storage will set you back $1,699, $200 less than Samsung’s base model. That’s no small chunk of change, especially when you consider that the Open comes standard with 512GB of storage, compared to the Fold6’s 256GB. More bang for your buck right from the start.

The OnePlus Open Apex Challenges Samsung Foldable Dominance

The differences only grow from there, because the Open isn’t just about being cheaper. OnePlus has packed this thing with some seriously impressive hardware that, for most of what you do on your phone, rivals Samsung’s offering. The foldable inner screen is a gorgeous 7.82-inch OLED panel, which is brighter and sharper than the 7.6-inch screen on the Fold6. When unfolded, you’re treated to a mini-tablet experience that feels more expansive and immersive.

“The OnePlus Open Apex Edition is a special version of the OnePlus Open inspired by the iconic Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition.”

Even the display on the outer cover is impressive: at 6.31 inches, it’s a hair bigger than the Fold 6’s and has a more traditional smartphone aspect ratio. This makes the Open feel much more like a ‘normal’ phone when folded. No more awkwardly stretched apps or cramped typing. As someone who has bigger hands, this has made it possible for me to actually use the OnePlus Open, while I found the Z Fold tedious and annoying for doing quick tasks.

Turning to the SoC, this is the one area where the OnePlus Open falls a little behind Samsung’s Fold6, but not by much. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip—the same silicon found in early 2023 flagships, including the Z Fold5 (which is currently priced at $1919.99 USD for the 512 GB model, a $220 difference). It’s not quite as cutting-edge as the Fold6’s Gen 3 processor, but real-world performance is still blazingly fast, with gaming and productivity comparing very well for most tasks. Couple that with a generous 16GB of RAM (4GB more than the Fold6), and you’ve got a multitasking powerhouse that can be used for everything from content creation to gaming with little issue.

The OnePlus Open Apex Challenges Samsung Foldable Dominance

Even with the slightly less modern SoC, battery life is another area where the Open manages to keep pace and even surpass Samsung’s foldable flagship. Its 4,805 mAh cell edges out the Fold 6’s 4,400 mAh battery, but the real kicker is the charging speed. The Open supports 67W fast charging, juicing up from empty to 100% in just 42 minutes. The Fold 6, meanwhile, is still stuck at 25W charging speeds that feel downright sluggish by comparison.

“The OnePlus Open boasts a versatile triple lens setup, headlined by a 48MP main shooter.”

For creators, OnePlus brings one of the best foldable camera systems to the party, with three solid rear cameras all ready to take on a variety of tasks. The OnePlus Open boasts a versatile triple lens setup, headlined by a 48MP main shooter. Early reviews praise its image quality as being on a par with, if not better than, the Fold 6 in many scenarios. The 64MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom is particularly impressive, offering more reach than Samsung’s 3x telephoto.

The OnePlus Open Apex Challenges Samsung Foldable Dominance

To be fair, the OnePlus Open falls short in a few areas, even if it excels in others. Samsung still has a few tricks up its sleeve with the Fold6. Its IPX8 water resistance rating trumps the Open’s IPX4 splash resistance. The Fold6 also supports the S Pen stylus, which could be a big draw for productivity-minded users. There’s no denying that Samsung has more experience in folding games, which could translate into better long-term durability.

“For those on the fence about taking the foldable plunge, the OnePlus Open Apex is an enticing proposition, especially with the new additions the phone brings to an already great device.”

Even with that, OnePlus makes a solid case for the Open Apex, thanks to the advantages the phone brings to the market, especially if you want your phone to be more than a device you show off at parties. OnePlus has crafted a device that feels like it was built from the ground up to be a foldable, rather than a regular phone that happens to bend in half. The hinge mechanism is smooth and sturdy, with a barely perceptible crease when unfolded.

For those on the fence about taking the foldable plunge, the OnePlus Open Apex is an enticing proposition, especially with the new additions the phone brings to an already great device. It delivers flagship-level specs and performance in an innovative form factor, while undercutting the competition on price. The OnePlus Open proves that you don’t have to empty your wallet or make major compromises to get in on the foldable action.

The OnePlus Open Apex Challenges Samsung Foldable Dominance

Of course, personal preference will always play a role in smartphone choice. Some users may prefer Samsung’s more established ecosystem, the Fold 6’s specific feature set, or even its new AI capabilities. But purely from a value and capability perspective, it’s hard to deny that the OnePlus Open has set a new standard for what we should expect from a premium foldable device.

The OnePlus Open Apex is undoubtedly a stunning piece of technology, offering some solid additions to an already impressive package. As the foldable phone market continues to heat up, competition like this can only be good news for consumers. It pushes manufacturers to innovate faster and offer better value for money. The OnePlus Open isn’t just a great phone in its own right; it’s a wake-up call to other companies to do better, and the Apex only pushes this further.

Sonic GX - Sonic the Hedgehog looks stunning on the Amstrad GX4000 and Amstrad Plus

In the early 90's I had the pleasure of playing the fantastic platformer of Sonic the Hedgehog on both the Sega Megadrive and Sega Master System. A game by Sega which featured a ring collecting blue hedgehog, that could spin, run, jump and roll about, at the fastest of speeds in a battle against a number of menacing enemies and the main antagonist Doctor Eggman. The next set of PlayStation Plus games have been revealed by Sony and it’s a mixed bag of family friendly fun, horror. and dark fantasy. Let’s have a look at what you are getting.

LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga (PS4/PS5)

It’s time to play through the entire Skywalker saga but you don’t have to always play as a Skywalker, why not play as a Sith lord instead? “Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the most ambitious Lego game yet, and despite the occasional technical mishap it delivers a daring and often delightful romp through the most iconic film franchise of all time,” we said in our 8/10 review.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Security Breach (PS4/PS5)

An older game here from 2021 and we did not review it at the time, so here’s something from the PlayStation Blog. “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach is the latest installment of the family-friendly horror games from Steel Wool Games. Play as Gregory, a young boy trapped overnight in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex. With the help of Freddy Fazbear himself, Gregory must survive the near-unstoppable hunt of reimagined Five Nights at Freddy’s characters – as well as new, horrific threats.”

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights (PS4)

Another game from 2021 and another game we did not review, but we did have a look when it hit  Early Access. “When it comes to wowing its audience from the start, few early access titles have done quite as well as Ender Lilies. Sure, there are areas that could be improved, such as the addition of more cinematic cutscenes to aid the story, but even without those, this has the potential to be a masterpiece,” said Emma.

All three games will be available to PlayStation Plus members on August 6th until September 2nd. PlayStation Plus members have until August 6 to the add the July games – Borderlands 3, NHL 24 and Among Us – to their game libraries

  • OnePlus will launch the Apex Edition foldable on August 7, and it will be available in a new Crimson Shadow colorway.

OnePlus has confirmed that it will launch a new version of its flagship foldable on August 7. In the days leading up to the launch, the company revealed that the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will come in a new Crimson Shadown colorway with a faux leather finish, feature enhanced storage, and offer new AI image editing capabilities. In addition, OnePlus has now confirmed that the upcoming model will come with a new VIP mode.

OnePlus recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will offer a new VIP mode for enhanced privacy. Although the company has not shared any details about this mode, we believe it will likely be the same as the VIP mode on the OPPO Find N3 and Find X7 Ultra.

The video included in OnePlus’ post confirms this, as it’s a clip of the VIP mode animation from the aforementioned OPPO devices. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that the VIP mode on the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will allow users to easily disable the camera, microphone, and location access using the alert slider.

We don’t expect to see any major hardware improvements on the Apex Edition model. OnePlus is likely reserving those for the OnePlus Open 2, which is slated to arrive sometime next year.

— OnePlus India (@OnePlus_IN) August 2, 2024

The video included in OnePlus’ post confirms this, as it’s a clip of the VIP mode animation from the aforementioned OPPO devices. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that the VIP mode on the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will allow users to easily disable the camera, microphone, and location access using the alert slider.

We don’t expect to see any major hardware improvements on the Apex Edition model. OnePlus is likely reserving those for the OnePlus Open 2, which is slated to arrive sometime next year.

  • A big leak may have revealed everything we need to know about the OnePlus Buds Pro 3.
  • The company’s flagship earbuds come in two colors: Midnight Opus and Lunar Radiance.
  • The battery life has been increased by four hours.

Only weeks ago, OnePlus held its Summer Launch Event, during which it unveiled four new products. Before the event, it was thought that one of the announcements would be for the OnePlus Buds Pro 3, but the company launched the Nord Buds 3 Pro instead. If you were disappointed by the OnePlus Buds Pro 3’s absence, then this new wireless earbuds leak is for you.

The folks over at Smartprix have divulged a slew of new information and images for the OnePlus Buds Pro 3. According to the outlet, the flagship earbuds will come in two colors: Midnight Opus (black) and Lunar Radiance (gold).

We can see from the images that the case appears to have a leather texture in the front, with a pairing button on the side. The earbuds seem to mimic the case’s style with a glossy stem and matte finish for the earbuds and ear tips. Additionally, the case has a USB-C port on the bottom and the earbuds have an engraved L and R for easy identification.

Speaking of the case, its dimensions are 6.5 x 5.2 x 2.6cm with a weight of 61 grams. Together with the case, earbuds are said to last up to 43 hours, which is a four-hour increase compared to the current generation. Additionally, you’ll get five hours of playback after just 10 minutes of charging. Other notable specs include an IP55 rating and Bluetooth 5.4.

In regards to sound, the earbuds reportedly come with a dual driver setup that features an 11mm woofer and 6mm tweeter. These buds have a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) and support an LHDC 5.0 audio codec with 24-bit/192 kHz audio. Meanwhile, these earbuds are said to have a slight improvement in noise cancelation, moving up to 50db from 49db. Finally, OnePlus has fit in a Dynaudio EQ, which will provide EQ presets tuned for specific music genres.

The last part of the leak mentions dual connection support. This means the earbuds will be able to connect with two different devices at the same time.

The outlet predicts that the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 will cost around ₹12,000 in India. Converted in US currency, this would be about $143. It’s important to note that the price in India could be different than the price that will be listed in the US. For comparison, the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 launched at $179 in the US.

  • OnePlus is launching a new version of the OnePlus Open, called the Apex Edition, on August 7.
  • The Apex Edition will have a new red color called Crimson Shadow but will otherwise look the same as the original Open.
  • The Apex Edition will feature “enhanced storage” and a potentially higher price tag than the standard OnePlus Open.

Although the OnePlus Open remains one of the best foldable phones on the market, many of us have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the OnePlus Open 2. Recent leaks hinted that the Open 2 might not debut until 2025, and it seems OnePlus might have just confirmed this delay. To keep the original model in the spotlight a bit longer, the company is launching a fresh variant of the OnePlus Open, ensuring it stays relevant while we wait for the next big thing.

The OnePlus Open Apex Edition, set to launch officially on August 7, is primarily a cosmetic refresh. The most notable change is the new “Crimson Shadow” colorway, a classy red hue with a faux leather texture that OnePlus claims was inspired by the iconic Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition camera. Combined with the phone’s large black camera island, the new colorway gives off a strong Deadpool vibe, which I’m absolutely down for.

Beyond the eye-catching exterior, OnePlus is teasing “enhanced storage” and “AI image editing features” on the Apex Edition. The former could be hinting that the Apex Edition will surpass the already generous 16GB/512GB configuration of the standard OnePlus Open by offering more RAM and/or storage space. The AI image editing features likely point toward the upcoming OxygenOS features, which may eventually be available on the standard OnePlus Open as well.

Interestingly, the official product page lists the Apex Edition’s software update policy as “3 years of OS upgrades,” while the standard OnePlus Open enjoys “4 years.” This could be an indication that the Apex Edition will come with Android 14 pre-installed, whereas the original OnePlus Open came with Android 13 out-of-the-box (though it has since been updated to Android 14).

As for pricing, we’ll have to wait for the official launch on August 7 to find out. But since the regular OnePlus Open () is mostly selling at discounted prices currently, there’s a chance the Apex Edition could launch at the OnePlus Open’s original $1,799 price tag.

This new variant of the OnePlus Open will definitely reignite interest in the original model for a while. However, we’re still crossing our fingers that the OnePlus Open 2 isn’t too far off. In the meantime, if you’re eager for a fresh foldable option this summer, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is set to make its debut in just a few days.

The device has recently gone on sale, and if you have picked one up or are planning to, you’d be glad to know that OnePlus is now rolling out the first update for the device, fixing a bunch of annoying bugs.

Changelog for Oxygen OS 14.1.0.229 for the OnePlus Pad 2

Here is the official changelog for this new update:

  • Camera
    • Improves camera performance for a better user experience.
  • System

I’m not ready to give up my Galaxy S24+ for a flip phone

2. Srpen 2024 v 16:44

To use Samsung's language, I've been on the fence about the Galaxy Z Flip series for a few years now. I can almost relate to those On the Fence ads from Samsung, save for the fact that, instead of having a hard time choosing between an iPhone and a Galaxy Z Flip, I'm having difficulties leaving my Galaxy S flagship behind. And this year, so far, it hasn't been any different.

I started using the Galaxy S24+ roughly six months ago, and so far, I have no complaints. In my eyes, the S24+ is just as perfect as the Galaxy S22+ was two years ago. Maybe even better, given the super bright 2,600 nits display, which I'm a big fan of, especially now during the bright summer days.

But I'm also a fan of flip phones. I've always liked them, even before they were smart. For the past few years, I kept thinking about switching to the flip side. I haven't done so yet, and that's just a testament to how good the Galaxy S Plus phones have been to me. And I'm starting to wonder if I ever will.

It's hard for a Plus user to get on board with the Flip

If I were in a position where I'd now choose my first-ever Galaxy phone, I'd probably pick the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It's gorgeous, and Samsung's foldable display technology never ceases to impress me.

However, as an existing Galaxy S24+ owner, I find it too hard to hop over the fence and jump into the flip side of Samsung's garden, so to speak.

The story continues after our Galaxy Z Flip 6 review video

You see, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a beautiful foldable phone, and in my book, it is the best of its kind in 2024, hands down! However, compared to the Galaxy S24+, which I think is the closest slab-type phone alternative to the Flip 6, it compromises too much in favor of its dual-screen hinged design.

The Galaxy S24+ has a higher-resolution display, better (and more) cameras, the same chip and memory configuration (except it runs on Exynos 2400 in most regions), a bigger battery with faster charging, support for Samsung DeX support and Ultra Wideband, and a more resilient build with a higher IP68 rating.

My only reasonable choice might be Samsung's other foldable

I'm slowly reaching the conclusion that, as an existing Galaxy S24+ owner, I'd have to really want the Flip and minimalist cover screen experience in order to leave a near-perfect S24+ behind. And as much as I appreciate the Flip series, I just don't think I like it that much.

It might be a lot easier to buy the Flip 6 if you upgrade from an older or lower-end phone — or a different brand — but for me, to exchange the Galaxy S24+ for a Flip is asking a bit too much.

With that in mind, I find it very interesting that the more foldable phone generations get released and the more I sit on the proverbial fence, the more I wonder if the only reasonable foldable phone for me — an S Plus series fan — is a Fold rather than a Flip.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 does look very good to me. It looks better than all its predecessors. It's slick and powerful, and I love its sharp edges and corners. Besides, at least I can say that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 beats the Galaxy S24+ in more areas, has a larger foldable display, and doesn't compromise as much as the Flip 6 in favor of the hinged form factor.

All in all, after all these years of waiting for the perfect time to buy a Galaxy Z Flip, I'm beginning to think that maybe I never will, and I'll eventually end up on the Fold side. I haven't made up my mind yet, and I'll probably wait for the Galaxy S25+ to come out before I make my decision.

Od dobrodružství ve hře Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga přes vzrušující hru Five Nights at Freddy’s Security Breach až po temnou fantasy Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights. Na své si tentokrát přijdou zejména mladší hráči.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Five Nights At Freddy’s Security Breach

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights

Třetí a poslední hrou přidanou do srpnové kolekce PlayStation Plus je Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights.

Předplatitelé služby PlayStation Plus mají ještě do 6. srpna možnost získat do svých knihoven červencové hry (Borderlands 3, NHL 24 a Among Us).

  • OnePlus has explained why the newly launched Nord CE 4 Lite has a smaller battery in Europe.
  • The company blamed shipping laws in the EU governing the size of an individual battery cell.
  • The OnePlus 12 and 12R bring large battery capacities to Europe, albeit via two individual battery cells.

OnePlus has just launched the Nord CE 4 Lite in global markets, but one major difference between the European model and other variants is the battery capacity. Other models, such as the Indian device, have a 5,500mAh battery, but the European variant brings a 5,110mAh battery instead.

Now, OnePlus has explained this disparity in an emailed statement, and it turns out that European regulations are to blame:

  • This phone’s predecessor, the Nord CE 3 Lite 5G, was rebranded into the OnePlus Nord N30 for the US market. Rebranding plans for the Nord CE 4 Lite are yet unknown.

OnePlus is known for its impressive flagships and foldables, but it also makes some pretty good budget Android phones. The company is refreshing its budget phone lineup with the launch of the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite 5G, packing in an even bigger battery and faster charging than before. Previous devices, like the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite, have entered the US market as the OnePlus Nord N30. While we don’t know of such rebranding plans for the Nord CE 4 Lite, it’s still a device worth looking at.

The processor on the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695, which was also used on the CE 3 Lite and even the CE 2 Lite. Qualcomm itself has rebranded the Snapdragon 695 into the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, so there is nothing fundamentally flawed here by OnePlus. A newer SoC (one that is not merely a rebrand) would have been better, but that would have messed around with the pricing and value proposition. Customers looking for more performance can climb higher up OnePlus’s product lineup to devices like the Nord CE 4 and even the main Nord series.

  • OnePlus is launching the OnePlus Pad Pro in China, which could come to the US as the OnePlus Pad 2.
  • The tablet looks similar to its predecessor but is expected to be the first Android tablet to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
  • OnePlus is also launching a new variant of the OnePlus Watch 2 in China.

OnePlus’ first attempt at an Android tablet, the OnePlus Pad, was a hit thanks to its excellent balance of price and performance. But over a year has passed since its release, and everyone’s been itching to know what’s next. Well, it looks like OnePlus might have just given us a clue.

In a Weibo post, OnePlus announced the launch of the OnePlus Pad Pro in China, marking the brand’s first tablet release in the Chinese market. We can safely assume that this new tablet, or a variant of it, will also make its way to the US, possibly under the name OnePlus Pad 2.

OnePlus Pad Pro Weibo screenshot

As translated from Chinese, OnePlus is calling the Pad Pro ‘the most powerful Android tablet,’ strongly suggesting that it will come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This would be a significant upgrade from the Dimensity 9000 chip found in the original OnePlus Pad and would make it the first Android tablet to feature the 8 Gen 3 chip.

The official teaser image also reveals a glimpse of a new keyboard cover accessory, complete with a laptop-style touchpad. We can also see a new black-colored stylus pen along with the tablet.

While we don’t have confirmation of any other specs so far, leaker Digital Chat Station has shared real-life images of the alleged OnePlus Pad Pro, which indicate that the tablet might not differ much physically from the original OnePlus Pad.

Unfortunately, it appears that the screen will still be an LCD panel. While the original OnePlus Pad’s LCD was impressive for its price, boasting Dolby Vision support and a 144Hz refresh rate, an OLED display is generally preferred for the ultimate multimedia experience.

Nevertheless, we can expect OnePlus to continue its tradition of competitive pricing for the OnePlus Pad Pro (or Pad 2) if and when it launches in the US. The price is expected to be higher than the original OnePlus Pad ( ), but if OnePlus can undercut the upcoming Galaxy Tab S10 series, it could have another winning tablet on its hands.

A new OnePlus Watch 2?

OnePlus Watch 2 China variant

Alongside the OnePlus Pad Pro, OnePlus also confirmed the launch of the OnePlus Watch 2 in China. From the image, it seems like this watch would be slightly different in terms of physical design compared to the OnePlus Watch 2 that’s available in the US.

This could be the alleged OnePlus Watch 3 that has been surfacing online in recent weeks. However, since the OnePlus Watch 2 launched just a few months ago, it’s uncertain whether OnePlus will release a new version in the US so soon.

These product launches, including the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro, are scheduled for June 27. The Ace 3 Pro is set to debut with the innovative Glacier Battery technology, promising significant improvements in battery performance and efficiency.

The best new streaming shows this week

Feel free to click on anything that piques your interest. This week, our list includes shows on Netflix, Max, Hulu, and MGM Plus.

House of the Dragon (Season 2) – June 16, Max

  • Release date: June 16, 2024
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: George R. R. Martin, Ryan Condal
  • Cast: Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Graham McTavish, Jefferson Hall

Set 200 years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon’s second season continues the Targaryen saga with a slow-burning start that gradually builds to intense political drama. The series focuses on the brewing conflict between Rhaenyra and Alicent, former friends now leading opposing factions. While the opening episode is heavy on recaps and diplomacy, the show soon hits its stride, delivering the epic dragon battles that you would expect.

House of the Dragons, in the first season, is slightly less dramatic than Game of Thrones. The second season continues this trend, holding on to the subtlety — but it is still a riveting, action-packed watch full of rivalry and, well…dragons.

Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini – June 20, Hulu

  • Release date: June 20, 2024
  • Genre: Documentary, Crime
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Michael Beach Nichols
  • Cast: Allison Berkley, Joseph Freed, Rob Ford, Erin Lee Carr

This is a three-part docuseries examining the controversial 2016 kidnapping case that turned out to be a hoax. Doesn’t that remind you of Gone Girl? The show opens with the initial investigation and Papini’s reappearance, before revealing the truth behind her fabricated story. Each hour-long episode meticulously reconstructs the events, from Papini’s initial vanishing to her reappearance 22 days later, and the eventual unraveling of her fabricated story.

An absolute treat for true-crime fans, the series features interviews with law enforcement officials, journalists, and Papini’s friends and family who offer multiple perspectives on the case. It explores the investigation process, the impact on the community, and the psychological factors that may have led to Papini’s actions. The show also leans into why this kind of “victim” is so problematic, and how their false reports hurt those who actually suffer.

Hotel Cocaine – June 16, MGM Plus

  • Release date: June 16, 2o24
  • Genre: Crime, Thriller
  • Rating: N.A.
  • Director: Chris Brancato
  • Cast: Danny Pino, Yul Vazquez, Mark Feuerstein, Laura Gordon, Corina Bradley, Tania Watson, Michael Chiklis

Hotel Cocaine transports viewers to 1970s Miami, in the infamous Mutiny Hotel. More specifically, on the general manager. Roman Compte. The series blends historical events with fictional drama, exploring the intersections of drug trafficking, politics, and family loyalties.

We watch Roman attempt to balance his legitimate business with the demands of drug traffickers, politicians, and law enforcement. The series features a large ensemble cast, including Michael Chiklis as a determined DEA agent. Hotel Cocaine also explores immigration, the American Dream, and the transformation of Miami during the cocaine boom, offering a gritty, detailed look at a pivotal era in the city’s history. It’s full of action and drama — so there’s that too.

I Kissed a Boy – June 15, Hulu

  • Release date: May 14, 2023
  • Genre: Reality
  • Rating: N.A.
  • Director: Johnathan Booth
  • Cast: Dannii Minogue, Layton Williams

I Kissed a Boy breaks new ground as the UK’s first all-gay dating show. Hosted by Dannii Minogue, the program brings together ten single men in a picturesque Italian setting. The unique twist is that contestants must kiss before speaking, challenging conventional dating norms.

Over eight episodes, the show follows the men as they navigate potential relationships, participate in challenges and face eliminations. While adhering to familiar reality dating show formats, I Kissed a Boy also addresses issues specific to gay dating and relationships. The series is a great start to showcasing LGBTQ+ relationships and identities, potentially paving the way for more diverse dating shows in the future.

The Victims’ Game (Season 2) – June 21, Netflix

  • Release date: June 21, 2024
  • Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: David Chuang, Chen Kuan-chung
  • Cast: Joseph Chang, Tiffany Hsu, Wang Shih-Sian, Moon Lee, Ruby Lin, Ding Ning, River Huang

The Victims’ Game: Season 2 is a Chinese-language crime thriller series returning to Netflix on June 21, 2024, following a four-year wait since its first season. This new installment centers around a series of interconnected murder cases tied to an incident from 15 years ago, delving into themes of belonging and the value of life.

Chang Hsiao-chuan reprises his role as Fang Yi-jen, a forensic detective with Asperger’s syndrome who finds himself as the prime suspect in these new cases. The series explores Fang’s character development as he navigates complex situations, including mending his relationship with his estranged daughter and learning to socialize more.

Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams – June 14, Netflix

  • Release date: June 14, 2024
  • Genre: Horror, Mystery
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Joko Anwar
  • Cast: Muzakki Ramdhan, Kevin Ardilova, Happy Salma, Sha Ine Febriyanti, Sal Priadi, Ayu Laksmi, Muhammad Faqih Alaydrus

Aptly named, this is the stuff of nightmares. This is a 7-part horror anthology. In the first episode, we follow taxi driver Banji as he leaves his senile mother in a luxurious elderly home, only to uncover sinister secrets about the place.

As Banji investigates increasingly disturbing occurrences, the episode transitions from a family drama into a supernatural horror, with lots of shocking revelations about the facility’s true purpose sprinkled in between. The story draws on Indonesian folklore and mythology elements, creating a culturally specific horror experience. Things are looking pretty good for the next episodes.

What was new and worth watching over the last month

Did you miss our other lists? Here’s a recap of what was released this month.

Bridgerton (Season 3, Part 2) – June 13, Netflix

  • Release date: June 13, 2024
  • Genre: Drama, Romance
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Chris Van Dusen
  • Cast: Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruth Gemmell, Luke Thompson, Polly Walker, Bessie Carter, Florence Hunt

After what feels like forever, part 2 of Netflix’s Regency-era romance is finally out, and boy, it is so worth the wait. We reach new heights of intrigue and emotion in the second half, given the existing standards for it — that’s saying a lot. If you haven’t watched the previous seasons or the first part, you might want to stop reading here.

Penelope and Colin might just get a happy-ever-after, but she has to deal with the looming threat of her Lady Whistledown secret being revealed. Because guess who Colin absolutely hates? Penelope must choose between holding on to her voice or starting a new family, with her own overbearing family making the choice even tougher than it needs to be. Queen Charlotte is also out to get her, and Francesca’s got her own complicated love story brewing on the sidelines.

Let it be known: the ton has never been so deliciously addictive.

The Boys (Season 4) – June 13, Prime Video

  • Release date: June 13, 2024
  • Genre: Action, Crime
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Eric Kripke
  • Cast: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso

The Boys are back and bolder than ever in Prime Video’s gritty superhero satire. Season 4 finds Butcher dying and desperate to save the world from Homelander and Neuman. Expect the show’s trademark shocks, from a horrifying Human Centipede-inspired scene to explosively bloody fights.

Strong performances, especially from Antony Starr’s deliciously evil Homelander, and the deft handling of topical themes keep you riveted, even if the nihilistic tone feels bleaker than ever. The Boys continues to deliver a wild, unsettling ride that sets up an epic final season.

Presumed Innocent – June 12, Apple TV Plus

  • Release date: June 12, 2024
  • Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: David E. Kelley
  • Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, O-T Fagbenle, Renate Reinsve

Apple TV Plus takes a second stab at Scott Turow’s legal thriller, with Jake Gyllenhaal stepping into the role of prosecutor Rusty Sabich, accused of murdering a co-worker he had an affair with. The series explores the case, and Rusty’s psyche and marriage. A solid, modernized take that justifies revisiting the story.

The pacing is great, hard to do with such a dense plot because the daily gripping courtroom drama keeps things humming. With its timely themes of power, privilege, and media scrutiny, Presumed Innocent makes for a very interesting weekend watch. But then, anything with Gyllenhaal would be.

Love Island USA (Season 6) – June 11, Peacock

  • Release date: June 11, 2024
  • Genre: Game Show, Reality
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Mark Busk-Cowley, Brent Baker, Jo Scarratt-Jones, Tom Gould
  • Cast: Arielle Vandenberg, Matthew Hoffman, Iain Stirling, Sarah Hyland, Ariana Madix, Nicholas Theodore Nemeth

We’re here with the latest iteration of Love Island USA, with the usual round-up of attractive singles converging to find love. With Vanderpump Rules fan-favorite Ariana Madix presiding as host, the new season starts strong, introducing memorable characters like mellow Kordell, hyper-sweaty Hannah, and lovable goofball Rob. The nearly real-time format remains as addictive as ever, letting viewers watch relationships bloom or wilt over weeks.

Everything you would expect from a show like this happens like the “bombshell” arrivals meant to spice things up. Still, there’s an escapist charm to watching attractive people flirt in a tropical villa, and the teased twists suggest the drama will keep heating up. Pack your emotional baggage for the trip.

Perfect Match (Season 2) – June 7, Netflix

  • Release date: June 7, 2024
  • Genre: Reality, Romance
  • Rating: TV-14
  • Director: Chris Coelen
  • Cast: Nick Lachey, Dom Gabriel, Georgia Hassarati, Bartise Bowden, Chloe Veitch, Izzy Fairthorne, Joey Sasso

Netflix doubles down on its Netflix reality all-stars conceit with another frothy season of Perfect Match. Though you needn’t be familiar with shows like The Circle or Sexy Beasts to follow along, half the fun is watching the collision of outsized personalities from different “extended universes.” The stakes are simple but effective: find your “perfect match” from the crowd or risk going home.

This ticking clock fuels much of the drama, as the absurdly attractive contestants fall into bed and bicker with equal passion. Host Nick Lachey presides with affable charm. A few couples emerge as early favorites to root for, but with new faces entering the villa each episode to shake things up, no pairing is safe. Silly, bubbly, and surprisingly sincere, Perfect Match remains the ideal low-stakes binge. Grab some popcorn and find a couple to root for.

Queenie (Season 1) – June 7, Hulu

  • Release date: June 4, 2024
  • Genre: Drama
  • Rating: N.A.
  • Director: Candice Carty-Williams
  • Cast: Dionne Brown, Bellah, Samuel Adewunmi

Queenie is a 25-year-old British Jamaican journalist struggling to navigate the challenges of work, love, sex, and family in this uneven but endearing quarter-life crisis dramedy on Hulu. Recently dumped by her boyfriend for being “too much”, Queenie spirals into a series of ill-advised decisions – drinking to excess, engaging in unsatisfying hookups, and flaking on work and friends.

Haunted by fractured memories of her estranged mother, Queenie avoids confronting her childhood trauma until she’s ready. While the show sometimes stumbles in articulating Queenie’s identity outside her struggles, it surrounds her with warmth and treats her with compassion, affirming that for all her flaws and missteps, she is worthy of love. A likeable if messy portrait of a young woman figuring herself out.

Sweet Tooth (Season 3) – June 6, Netflix

  • Release date: June 6, 2024
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
  • Rating: TV-14
  • Director: Jim Mickle
  • Cast: Nonso Anozie, Christian Convery, Adeel Akhtar, Stefania LaVie Owen, James Brolin, Naledi Murray, Dania Ramirez

After surviving harrowing ordeals in the first two seasons, the young deer-human hybrid Gus and his gruff protector Tommy Jepperd continue their journey through a post-apocalyptic America. Still reeling from the deadly Sick virus, of course. Having escaped the clutches of human militias who hunt hybrids, Gus has learned his kind’s existence is deeply linked to the pandemic’s origins.

New enemies soon emerge to threaten Gus and his found family. With each perilous stop, the mysteries surrounding Gus’s destiny loom larger. Despite slower subplots, Sweet Tooth builds narrative urgency for a satisfying final chapter that explores its core themes — the power of innocence and humanity’s self-destructive impulses.

The Acolyte – June 4, Disney Plus

  • Release date: June 4, 2024
  • Genre: Action, Adventure
  • Rating: TV-14
  • Director: Leslye Headland
  • Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Manny Jacinto, Rebecca Henderson, Joonas Suotamo

This exploration of the Star Wars mythos is set centuries before the Skywalker saga. The series follows the journeys of former Jedi acolytes — sisters Osha and Mae — after a tragic incident derails their training in the ancient mystical order’s ways. Mae has fallen in with shadowy underground elements plotting to overthrow the complacent Jedi regime.

Meanwhile, the more reluctant Osha finds herself caught in a web of conspiracy surrounding the Jedi’s once ironclad beliefs of peace and justice for the galaxy. The Acolyte dares to ask — were the Jedi’s lofty teachings masking darker, more troubling secrets? This uniquely feminist take pushes Star Wars to new frontiers.

Fantasmas – June 7, Max

  • Release date: June 7, 2024
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Julio Torres
  • Cast: Julio Torres, Martine Gutierrez, Tómas Matos, Joe Rumrill

This comedy series is an unfiltered fever dream. You only need to watch the trailer to know that. It follows Torres himself, an eccentric artist, as he pitches demented high-concept TV premises to baffled Hollywood producers. From a deranged Lion King remake about zebras to a twisted addiction drama centered on the Tooth Fairy, Fantasmas’s sketches routinely veer into the surreal, and outright unhinged.

Overflowing with absurdist humor, Fantasmas explores the anxieties plaguing an authentic artistic voice. By leaning fully into strangeness and vulnerability, the series discusses the infinite realms of possibility within one brilliant creative mind. But….if you’re in the mood for a traditional watch, this show might be too mind-bending for you.

Criminal Minds: Evolution (Season 2) – June 6, Paramount Plus

  • Release date: June 6, 2024
  • Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
  • Rating: TV-14
  • Director: Jeff Davis
  • Cast: Kirsten Vangsness, A.J. Cook, Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore, Paget Brewster

Your weekly dose of your favorite profilers is back, but they might be in a tight spot this season. The show opens very dramatically, as our BAU profilers meet one of their most evil criminals — a prolific serial killer dubbed “Gold Star”. They have to make a shocking, unholy alliance to capture him — with none other than Elias Voit, the serial killer from last season.

That’s because Voit may possess insights into Gold Star’s psychopathic motives that could help track him. However, being close to the manipulative Voit is traumatizing for the agents, especially David Rossi who is still haunted by Voit’s torments. Emily Prentiss also brings in former analyst Tyler Green, whose romantic history with Penelope Garcia might just make it difficult for the team to stay together.

Mayor of Kingstown (Season 3) – June 2, Paramount Plus

  • Release date: June 2, 2024
  • Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Taylor Sheridan, Hugh Dillon
  • Cast: Jeremy Renner, Hugh Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley

In the gritty third season, Jeremy Renner returns as Mike McLusky, the fixer who wields true power in the crime-ridden city of Kingstown. Still reeling from his mother’s tragic death, Mike faces a new wave of violence that threatens his grasp on order between the police force and criminal factions like the Aryan Brotherhood, gangs, and the Russian mob.

An IED detonates at his mother’s funeral, kicking off a chaotic game of retaliations and bloodshed. Mike’s former ally, the formidable gang leader Bunny, declares Kingstown a warzone as he battles to maintain dominance. New adversaries also emerge — like the menacing Russian mobster Konstantin, while the hard-nosed new DA Evelyn Foley turns into a bigger problem for Mike.

Ren Fraire – June 2, Max

  • Release date: June 2, 2024
  • Genre: Documentary
  • Rating: TV-14
  • Director: Lance Oppenheim, David Gauvey Herbert
  • Cast: Jeffrey Baldwin, Darla Smith, George Coulam, Louie Migliaccio

Ren Faire takes viewers behind the scenes of the massive Texas Renaissance Festival, providing an intimate look at the heated succession battle to determine who will inherit control of this iconic event after its 86-year-old founder, George “King George” Coulam, retires. Two frontrunners have emerged to take over King George’s kingdom when he steps down — Jeff Baldwin and Louie Migliaccio.

Blending cinematic visuals with an engrossing character study of its eccentric players, Ren Faire pulls back the curtain on the high-stakes battle to control a multimillion-dollar live entertainment empire built on fantasy, intrigue, and medieval lore. Only one contender can win and lead this kingdom into a new age.

The Outlaws (Season 3) – May 31, Amazon Prime

  • Release date: May 31, 2024
  • Genre: Comedy, Crime, Drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Stephen Merchant, Elgin James
  • Cast: Christopher Walken, Stephen Merchant, Darren Boyd, Rhianne Barreto, Gamba Cole, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson

The Outlaws are done with their community service on a Bristol farm when Rani suddenly drives back in her car with a dead body. The group has to solve how to get rid of the dead body without letting Rani’s strange behavior get in the way. On the other hand, the drug boss — The Dean — is out for revenge against them for having him jailed. Rani’s boyfriend Ben feels let down after she ran away earlier.

Loads of other sub-plots working in the background — Greg resigns from work and goes on a date, and Gabby attempts to kick her bad habits. Most of the main cast is back, but Christopher Walken who played Frank’s character will only make one appearance this season. Expect the show’s signature mix of crime thrills and character-driven humor as the gang gets pulled into yet another risky misadventure.

  • An upcoming OnePlus smartwatch with LTE support has surfaced in Chinese regulatory body TENAA’s database.
  • The certification filing reveals several similarities with the recently released OnePlus Watch 2.

OnePlus is likely working on an upgraded version of the OnePlus Watch 2, which could address one of its main shortcomings: the lack of LTE support.

MySmartPrice has spotted an unreleased OnePlus smartwatch with the model number OPWW234 in a certification filing submitted to China’s regulatory body TENAA. The filing includes a render showcasing a smartwatch that looks strikingly similar to the OnePlus Watch 2 with a circular dial and two buttons on the right side.

While the upcoming model might not feature major design changes, the listing adds that it will include LTE connectivity via eSIM and support eSIMs from China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile. Like the OnePlus Watch 2, it will also include Bluetooth, GPS, BeiDou, NFC, GLONASS, and WLAN support.

The international variant of the unreleased smartwatch with the model number OPWWE234 appeared on India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification site and in the TUV Rheinland database earlier this month. As per those listings, the model will bear further similarities with the OnePlus Watch 2, like a 500mAh battery. A 3C certification listing of the Chinese model has also highlighted the same 10W charging capability.

Due to these similarities, we suspect that the device could just be an LTE variant of the OnePlus Watch 2. Add to that the fact that it has only been a few months since the OnePlus Watch 2 hit the market, it’s highly unlikely for the company to release a full-fledged successor.

We might not have to wait too long to know for sure, as companies generally submit regulatory filings close to launch. OnePlus will likely release the watch in China and India. We don’t have any indication of a wider global launch.

With eight speakers, the Lenovo Tab Plus is basically a portable audio device that’s also an 11.5 inch Android tablet

Most smartphones, tablets, and laptops have built-in speakers. And most of them aren’t great, because it’s difficult to cram a decent set of speakers into thin and light designs that are common these days. The speakers often feel like an afterthought. That’s not the case with the new Lenovo Tab Plus. Its eight built-in speakers are […]

  • Apple is currently looking to hire an Android software engineer to join the Apple TV app team.
  • The job listing heavily suggests that the TV Plus service is coming to Android.
  • Apple likely wants to expand the audience for TV Plus.

It’s not often that Apple feels compelled to bring its services over to Android, which makes today’s discovery particularly interesting. It appears the Cupertino firm is planning to bring the TV Plus app to Android phones.

First spotted by Bloomberg, Apple posted a job listing on May 25 requesting the services of an Android software engineer. According to the post, this engineer would join the Apple TV app team to “design and architect a sophisticated application.”

The listing doesn’t outright say it, but it heavily suggests that the company plans to create an Android version of the streaming service phone app. At the same time, it also suggests that the tech giant is interested in growing the service’s user base.

While the iPhone may be the most popular smartphone in the US, it trails behind Android phones on the global stage. In fact, over 3 billion active devices around the world happen to run on Google’s OS. So opening up TV Plus to Android users could greatly increase its user numbers.

Apple has invested heavily in the TV Plus platform, spending money on original programming like Ted Lasso, Severance, and more. As such, the more eyes it can get for its service, the better for business.

Expanding the service shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as the company has a history of bringing the app to other third-party platforms. It can be found on devices like Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Amazon Fire Stick, and more. This wouldn’t even be the first time Apple TV Plus has flirted with Android as the service is available on Google Chromecast devices and smart TVs that run on Android. So it’s nice to know that it appears Android phone owners could soon use the app as well.

We have reached out to Apple for comment. We will update this article if we get a response.
