UPDATE 20/8/24: Well, there you go. Following last week's Deadline report, Amazon has officially unveiled Secret Level, a new "adult-animated anthology series featuring original stories set within the worlds of some of the most beloved video games".

It's a 15-episode series from the creators of Love, Death & Robots, and it'll feature stories inspired by Armored Core, Concord, Crossfire, Dungeons & Dragons, Exodus, Honor of Kings, Mega Man, New World: Aeternum, PAC-MAN, Sifu, Spelunky, The Outer Worlds, Unreal Tournament, Warhammer 40,000, and a variety of PlayStation Studios games.

And if that takes your fancy, you'll be wanting to circle 10th December on your calendar - which is when the series arrives on Prime Video - then check out its teaser trailer below.

Considering E3 is dead, an awful lot of it happened over the weekend and quite honestly, it feels like this weekend contained some of the best video game 'showcases' in quite a long time.

Summer Game(s) Fest kicked everything off with a bang, but that was followed up by a surprisingly brilliant Xbox Showcase, a heartwarming Wholesome Direct and a bloodsoaked Blumhouse Games Showcase. But who's got time to comb through all of those on a Monday morning when they should be working? Not I, that's for sure. Which is why I very much enjoyed checking out Jim Trinca's, definitive list video of all the best reveals and featured games from this year's 'I Can't Believe It's Not E3' (other opinions are available).

Game of the Week: Spelunky remains the game you can't finish

My position on things is that you can't really finish Spelunky. In Spelunky, a brilliantly malevolent yet dependable roguelike and platformer, there's always something more to try, something new you might learn.

Even so, the degree to which I personally had not finished Spelunky lay far beyond what most people would mean by not having finished the game. More clearly: until this week, I had not defeated Olmec, the very first final boss, if such a formulation is possible. Anyway, now I have. And so Spelunky is our game of the week as a result. Go and play Spelunky! It's still brilliant.

I don't know why I hadn't defeated Olmec until now. My clock reads 220 hours on Steam alone, and I've spent what feel like whole lifetimes playing the game on the 360 and Switch, and even the original version on PC. I would say I'm probably 400 hours in all told, and also: Olmec isn't even that hard to beat. Open up shortcuts and you can be there in minutes, and all you need to cheese him is five bombs. And also also: he's a reference to the final boss of Super Mario 3, which I defeated when I was 12 or thereabouts.

Spelunky creator’s mega-collection of fictional retro games UFO 50 will finally be out this September

UFO 50 is a collection of fictional retro games designed as if they were made for a non-existent games console 40 years ago, but in reality have been developed as brand new titles for an upcoming collection from indie devs including Spelunky creator Derek Yu. With the ambitious project nearing a decade in its own development, though, those games have now taken on their own real history in addition to their made-up one. Those histories will meet this September, when UFO 50 finally sees the light of day.

We're well aware of our human capabilities, so games often deliver fantasies about going beyond them. We play characters with extraordinary acrobatic abilities, or with incredible strength or martial prowess, and sometimes, we play as characters who have powers we could never have. Mixed within this is the fantasy of becoming something completely different and changing entirely from a human into something else, and that's what I want to get at here. Ever since Altered Beast, and probably for far longer, we've had games that allowed us to change shapes and access new abilities as we play. We've even had games take us to inorganic places, with mech suits and more. Shape changes can be the ultimate power-up. The question is, which are the best?

It's been a long old wait for UFO 50 - the 50-strong anthology of 8-bit-inspired games from Spelunky creator Derek Yu's Mossmouth studio - but as the seventh anniversary of its announcement approaches this August, Yu has revealed the promising project is currently on track to release in the second half of this year.

When UFO 50 was announced in 2017, the goal was to launch it the following year. That, obviously, didn't happen, with Yu last year explaining the longer-than-expected development time was simply down to the team having wildly underestimated how long it would take to make 50 games, particularly given Spelunky 2 was being made in the middle of it all.

UFO 50, if you're unfamiliar, isn't a mini- or micro-game compilation, but a collection of complete 8-bit game experiences (albeit of varying sizes) created as if from a long-forgotten fictional 80s video game company, with sequels and recurring characters creating a sense of shared continuity. It promises everything from platformers and shoot 'em ups to puzzle games, roguelites, and RPGs, with over half featuring local multiplayer, including co-op and versus play.

After seven years, Spelunky creator's retro compilation UFO 50 will release in the second half of 2024

It's been a hot minute since we last wrote about UFO 50, the 50-games-in-1 8-bit retro collection from the makers of Spelunky, Downwell and friends. It's been MIA for several years now (and no wonder, given these are 50 full-sized games being made by several different, and likely very busy, developers), but at long last, Spelunky creator Derek Yu has posted an update on Steam saying the project is finally nearing completion. "We should have a complete game in a few months but are planning for a release in the second half of the year to give us time to do more testing and then marketing," he said.
