Let's Build a Zoo studio is making a game dev management sim where you design your own MMO

14. Srpen 2024 v 21:40

Springloaded Software, the developer behind 2021's animal-splicing tycoon game Let's Build a Zoo, has unveiled Let's Build a Dungeon - a new "multi-layered" management sim in which players attempt to run a game development studio while creating their own MMORPG.

Let's Build a Dungeon's first layer comes in the form of studio management, with players needing to recruit staff (including artists, programmers, planners, and testers); manage project deadlines, advertising campaigns, and press relationships; negotiate with shareholders, and pitch to publishers, all in the hope of rising from indie start-up to mega-blockbuster studio.

But alongside the business stuff, players also need to get creative and build their own fantasy MMO - which could be anything from a creature-catching RPG to a cosy farming sim - filling it with towns, monsters, dungeons, and quests, all tailored to satisfy their virtual playerbase's demands and expand its audience. And it's even possible to jump into your creation at any time to experience it through the eyes of your players.

I’ve never been one to make very good use of Steam wishlists – or any wishlists, for that matter. I’m weird in that way, I suppose. But I’ve been trying to be a more organized adult by making better use of notes and lists and all that jazz, even though it’s a slow process. And […]

Wisdom of Nym: Speculating on Final Fantasy XIV’s Allied Societies for Dawntrail

19. Srpen 2024 v 18:00
We’ve gone through a lot of different names for what are now being called Allied Societies in Final Fantasy XIV, but I think this one finally captures both what the idea is for these quests and the space that FFXIV has narratively staked out for these quests. It was one thing when it was Amalj’aa […]

Let's Build A Dungeon is a management game about running a dev studio and designing your own subscription MMO

The management game progression chart is supposed to go: zoo, then theme park, then hospital, then school. Apparently no one told Springloaded Software, who are following up their 2021 tycoon 'em up Let's Build A Zoo with a game about building an MMO.

Let's Build A Dungeon marries the business aspects of Game Dev Tycoon with a more hands-on approach to constructing your company's game, and there's a first trailer below.

Drakantos says it is very much an MMORPG, but not exactly like others you’ve played

5. Srpen 2024 v 20:30
Is Drakantos an MMORPG? A co-op OARPG? The answer to that question is the primary subject of Wingeon Game Studios’ June dev blog, which confirms that the title is “an MMORPG at its core,” though it’s also attempting to do things a bit differently from the standard formula of the genre. While Drakantos will have […]

Before I dive into this week’s column, I want to start things off by noting a weird aspect of storytelling that’s true in Final Fantasy XIV as much as anywhere else: Excellent execution where it counts more can be way more important than sub-par execution where it counts less. Every single FFXIV expansion, for example, […]

This gorgeously illustrated fanart features Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, and Senshi sharing hotpot together. The color palette chosen for the piece gives it a warm and cozy feel – even with Marcille’s disgruntled expression. It beautifully captures one of Delicious In Dungeon‘s core themes: the importance of taking the time to share a meal with the people you care about.

With the tense season 1 finale ramping things up leading into the already announced second season, it can be easy to forget that some of the show’s best moments come from Laios and the rest of the party connecting with friends new and old through the power of home cooking, even if they are making their meals with monsters.

Delicious in Dungeon is available to stream on Netflix.

Darkest Dungeon 2 launched for PC last May, after some time in early access, taking players on a grim Lovecraftian road trip - one of bone-juddering carriage rides through nightmarish locales - that Eurogamer contributor Edwin Evans-Thirlwell called a "copious and often brilliant, if not quite unmissable reworking of a powerfully grim fantasy" in his Recommended review.

The original's tactical turn-based combat is back too, of course, described by Edwin as "clearer and snappier and more oriented toward collaboration between party-members" this time around, and PlayStation owners looking to bolster Darkest Dungeon 2's core roster of 12 playable heroes can pick up its Binding Blade DLC alongside the main game come launch day.

This delightful fantasy immersive sim somehow snuck its merry way into Steam’s FPS fest

Neverlooted Dungeon is an rpg game in which you can shoot a crossbow from a first person perspective. This, I imagine, was the pitch it used when trying to blag its way past the thermodynamically powered golem wearing a Daikatana t-shirt that guards the gates of Steam’s currently-running FPS fest. Whatever the excuse, this silver tongued rascal succeeded, and is now nestled comfortably between umpteen boomer shooter revivals, trying to squeeze Ultima factoids into the conversation.
