The latest State of Play was big on spectacle but low on surprises

Sony’s summer State of Play showcase offered a first look at God Of War Laufey, Until Dawn 2, and many other games, so why did it still feel so safe and predictable?

With two more major showcases to go this week, and rumours of a Nintendo Direct on Tuesday, it was left to Sony to perform the opening salvo in this year’s summer showcase line-up. Back when E3 was still a thing, they always used to go after Xbox, benefiting from being able to change their plans at the last minute – which they did to famous effect following the Xbox One’s debut.

Nowadays, those kinds of machinations are no longer necessary and Sony often doesn’t seem to make so much of an effort anymore. They did on Tuesday night though, with a well-paced State of Play with plenty of interesting first and third party games, almost all of which looked impressive in some way.

What was absent though was anything in the way of surprises, with Until Dawn 2 being one of the only games that hadn’t already been rumoured to hell and back (and even then it had been hinted at). By comparison, God Of War Laufey had been known about in some detail for quite a while, but that wasn’t the main reason why it seemed so predictable.

Some of the God Of War rumours were so specific they now count as spoilers but the gist of them was that Laufey/Faye has a very different fighting style to Kratos, more akin to Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. Watching the footage on Tuesday night, that was exactly what the game seems to be and… exactly what you could’ve predicted before seeing it.

To be clear, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a disappointing or a bad game, or even that Santa Monica Studio had done anything wrong, it’s just that in 20 minutes of footage it feels like you can extrapolate out what the entire game is going to be, if you’ve played either of the previous two titles.

Marvel’s Wolverine had much the same problem, in that as impressive as the visuals are it all seemed very familiar, despite it appearing to have little in common with Insomniac’s previous work with Spider-Man (there’s no open world for a start) and Wolverine not having an established formula for his games.

This isn’t a Sony problem. The problem is that only the most surefire hits can ever justify the time and money needed to make triple-A games nowadays and that means that no matter their overall quality, predictability is now a prerequisite.

The other disappointment is that there was no sign of any kind of change in approach in Sony’s first party plans. To be fair to them, they’d given no indication there would be but after rumours of reviving older franchises, and moving away from PC releases, there had been a hope amongst fans that Sony might be moving back towards a style and frequency of releases more similar to the PlayStation 4 era.

That may well be happening, to some degree, but when high-end games take five or more years to make change comes slowly. This State of Play wasn’t a sea change moment but three first party releases (Marvel’s Wolverine, Until Dawn 2, and God Of War Laufey) is more than we’ve had recently, even if the latter didn’t have a release year and there was no sign of Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

What also wasn’t there was Fairgames$ or any other live service game beyond Marathon. Despite rumours that Fairgame$ has had a name change it didn’t get a mention, and there’s still nothing to suggest it hasn’t been cancelled or put on the backburner. Horizon Hunters Gathering wasn’t mentioned either, in what was a very single-player focused showcase.

However, there’s a danger in just seeing what you want to see in these sorts of things. Most people want to return to the PlayStation 4 days, when new first party games were frequent and new IP was not unheard of, but there’s no indication that Sony does.

You can read the tea leaves in a certain way, to make it seem as if change is coming, but until we see multiple new games announced at once or, god forbid, Sony actually comes out and explains their plans, it’s all just wishful thinking.

If they were going to change direction then the launch of the PlayStation 6 would be the obvious time to do so, although when that will actually be, given the ongoing memory crisis, remains a mystery – and probably to Sony as well.

In the meantime, solid but predictable is probably going to be the watchword for not only future State of Plays but the rest of the not-E3 period, including the upcoming showcases from Xbox and Nintendo. The modern state of video game development just doesn’t lend itself to surprises or multiple reveals at once, and a great deal has to change for that to ever not be the case again.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners battle pass: All skins revealed

5. Červen 2026 v 14:01

With the next Fortnite season almost upon us, we thought that while you wait for the Shattered live event, you ought to get up to speed on the Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners Battle Pass, as Epic Games has teased a glimpse of what's to come!

One of the biggest changes is how Sprites are going to be incorporated into the game, as they look to take a much more prominent role in how the meta will be shaped.

There are, of course, new POIs, weapons and more, and we'll go over what we know at the moment about what's coming in Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners.

Hopefully, we will continue to be able to enjoy Fortnite as we always have, even if a UK government ban could potentially impact Fortnite.

If you're really twiddling your thumbs waiting for the new Fortnite Battle Pass to roll out, then why not check out our Fortnite Steal the Brainrot codes page?

But, without further ado, read on for all there is to know about the new Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners Battle Pass!

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 battle pass: All skins revealed

A graphic displaying the numerous skins in the Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners Battle Pass.

As you can see in the above image, there are eight new skins as part of the Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners battle pass.

From left to right, these are:

  • Heatwave PJ
  • Cluster
  • Dylan
  • The Guardian
  • John Wick (Pen and Ink)
  • The Voidblade
  • Vanguard Slone
  • Wolfe

The Guardian is customisable, featuring a Sprite up top as the pilot, if you will, with other elements of the sit being able to be modified, such as selecting different colours and parts.

On that note, there are number of already confirmed Sprites:

  • Skully Sprite
  • Fishstick Sprite
  • Punk Sprite
  • Magma Sprite
  • Burnt Peanut Sprite

As a launch week bonus, you can unlock Gold Huntress Dylan, which also comes with a Marbled Speedboat, Venomous Chainsaw and a Gilded Cherub Holster, all of which are suitably gold.

John Wick gets some love too, receiving the Gunglider, Dark Cubic Sneakers, Blade of the Void, and, rather unceremoniously, his Dog.

The Runners battle pass will cost 800 V-Bucks when it goes live

What's new in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Runners?

As well as the skins, there are also new items and weapons added to the roster, as well as new POIs to explore. Check out what's new below!

Chaos Reloader Assault Rifle

We've already had the Chaos Reloader Shotgun in Chapter 7 Season 2, so it's no surprise to see this range of weaponry extend to assault rifles. There's no word yet on how powerful it will be, but the shotgun was devastating. Hopefully, the AR continues the traditions!

Triple-Barrel Shotgun

If the Chaos Reloader Shotgun wasn't bonkers enough for you, then perhaps the Triple-Barreled Shotgun will do the trick. Again, we have no idea on what the stats are, but it's likely to come in clutch for close-quarters engagements or dealing with pesky bosses after taking their shields down with an SMG.

New Tropical POI

In place of the old Dark Dominion POI, we are getting a new tropical locale, which is much better suited to the summer vibes of Runners. At the centre of the POI is the Zero Point, so expect to see lots of players and anomalies here!

Duck Mansion POI

Alongside the Duck Head skin, we are getting a new Duck Mansion POI. Again, details are light at the moment, but we could see a Duck Head NPC or boss here. This POI will likely be a hot spot for player activity, so play it safe when dropping in!

How do Sprites work in Fortnite?

Sprites, which were introduced in Chapter 6 Season 1, are little creatures that you can attach to yourself in order to gain extra abilities or buffs. Chapter 7 Season 3 looks to be introducing more Sprites than ever, with new types, the abilities of which are unknown at this moment.

With the mech suit that is customisable, you can use different Sprites as the pilot, and this may affect what abilities you can use.

Sprites may be able to work in tandem with weapons and items too, as in the new trailer, a Fire Sprite cause a Chaos Reloader Assault Rifle to trigger an explosion. If this is the case, we could see a lot of experimentation and a new loadout weapon emerge.

Tifa Lockhart Will Join Street Fighter 6 as Year 4 DLC

6. Červen 2026 v 01:40

During the 2026 Summer Game Fest, Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII was announced as the next DLC guest character for Street Fighter 6. She will arrive in early 2027 as part of the game’s Year 4 Season Pass of new content alongside new characters Arjun, Yasmine, and Bosch.

Tifa is currently slated to be the third character of the set to be released, and she will be available as part of the Year 4 Character Pass or Ultimate Pass. After the reveal trailer, Director of Street Fighter 6 Takayuki Nakayama and Director of Square Enix Naoki Hamaguchi took to the stage to explain that not only would Materia feature as a new gameplay feature for Tifa, but that another “iconic Final Fantasy element” would also be adapted for the game.

You can check out the official announcement on X below:

Unfortunately, Tifa will not have any story content added to the game, as Capcom have previously stated that the World Tour story mode would not be updated after the recent release of Ingrid. Those wanting more story content involving Tifa will have to look forward to the release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which was also announced at Summer Game Fest.

Tifa Lockhart set to arrive as a playable character in Street Fighter 6 sometime in early 2027. The main game is immediately available on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X.

Square Enix Video Says ‘NieR: Automata to Be Continued’

Square Enix Video Says NieR: Automata to Be Continued new game anime book

Square Enix shared a special PV video on YouTube that ended with the phrase “NieR: Automata to be continued.” This suggests we could see a new NieR: Automata project, though the vagueness means it is uncertain if it could be related to the anime adaptation, a game, or book. Additional statements also confirmed current sales figures for that game and NieR Replicant

First, here’s the “NieR: Automata to be continued” announcement video suggesting a new project like a game or other form of media is in the works. It’s specifically designed to honor the fact that this game passed 10 million units sold physically and digitally worldwide. That applies to the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game. At the 5:48 mark of the PV, the screen scrambles and the ominous text suggesting more is in development shows up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyn1b_5bw-M

Square Enix also shared new key art on social media honoring the sales milestone. That features 2B at the forefront, with 9S right behind her and A2 at the back.

As for the new sales figure update for NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, that wasn’t accompanied by a special video. Square Enix just took to social media to share the update. It’s now at two million copies sold worldwide digitally and physically. That takes into account the PS4, Xbox One, and PC copies.

There is a piece of art shared to commemorate that, however.

NieR: Automata is available on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the anime is on Crunchyroll, and Square Enix’s books division handled a number of spin-off books worldwide.
