This Week in Mobile Gaming: Apple Arcade Unleashes Big Updates & 3 New

For mobile gaming news this week, Apple Arcade has revealed a wealth of updates to their mobile titles with three new title announcements, and mobile darling Genshin Impact is finally heading to Xbox.

Mobile gaming has had yet another busy week in August, with Gamescom ONL 2024 launching a wealth of news on the gaming landscape for fans to dive into. Probably the most surprising is Genshin Impact has received a release date of November 2024 for Xbox. However, no release has been announced yet for the mobile Nintendo Switch despite HoYoverse announcing it for Switch way back in January 2020.

Aside from that, Apple Arcade has upped its offerings with three new titles launching in September 2024, which were announced this week, and a boatload of updates for its existing titles.

This Week in Mobile Gaming For August 24

Apple Arcade has Announced Three New Titles For Mobile!

This Week in Mobile Gaming: Apple Arcade Unleashes Big Updates & 3 New
  • Monster Train+ by Good Shepherd Entertainment – Good Shepherd Entertainment is bringing their lightning-in-a-bottle title to Apple Arcade from Steam, making it a true mobile gaming experience. Players must defend the burning pyre from the celestial forces of heaven as monsters would. This title functions as a roguelite deck-building game and introduces a new strategic layer with three vertical playing fields to defend. The ‘plus’ version for Apple Arcade also includes The Last Divinity DLC, adding a new clan and challenges to the fray.
  • NFL Retro Bowl ’25 by New Star Games – Retro Bowl is coming back to mobile gaming, and it’s exclusive to Apple Arcade in NFL Retro Bowl ’25. The newly revamped title brings full NFL licensing to the title, allowing NFL fans to utilize their favourite athletes in the game, just like Madden 25‘s Franchise Mode, Retro Bowl allows NFL fans to create their own dynasty by choosing their favourite official NFL teams and taking them the distance.
  • The last new game announced for Apple Arcade is Puzzle Sculpt by Schell Games, an Apple Vision Pro and Apple Arcade exclusive that brings coziness to an already cozy space of a living room. Players can look around and solve puzzles while completely relaxed in this new title. There are many puzzles to solve and challenges to overcome with an ever-increasing difficulty that ramps with the player’s skill.

Other Mobile Gaming Updates Coming to Apple Arcade

  • Vampire Survivors+ Introduces a new stage called Room 1665, doubling as a Challenge stage made of 16 rooms that will challenge players to fight the floors as a crucible. This update also adds two new character skins — ‘Unbinded Imelda’ and ‘Retired Poe’ — with new Darkanas modifiers.
  • TMNT Splintered Fate now lets players pair four controllers to enjoy four-player couch co-op on the same device. With new cross-platform support, four-player online co-op can now happen on any platform.
  • Temple Run: Legends introduces customization with new unlockable Outfits and a new Outfit System. Outfits also grant wearers buffs during specific runs, proving that the sneakers matter when foot racing.
  • SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit adds the conclusion of the latest Tales of the Deep called Inner Machinations of the Thoughtless Mind.
  • Simon’s Cat – Story Time lets players try out the new Summer Search Party event to earn daily rewards for finding beach balls in the gardens.
  • Fruit Ninja Classic+ blasts off a Jetpack Joyride 2-themed in-game event, where players can earn the Jetpack Blade and Moon Tombs Dojo from joyride, but in Fruit Ninja Classic+.
  • A Slight Chance of Sawblades+ celebrates International Dog Day (August 26) with an all-new canine character and dog-themed background.
  • Disney Coloring World+ lets players join the Muppets in a new colouring pack.

Mobile Gaming news hasn’t wrapped just yet. Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition also brings the new free and paid expansion to mobile devices this week, capping off A Rift in Time (and Jaffar’s time as the big bad). With that, though, mobile gaming news ends this week. Fans looking for all of the additions and where to check them out can visit the official Apple Arcade website.

March 7th Hunt using her Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail

With the release of Honkai: Star Rail version 2.4, March 7th's transition into her new path gives players a brand new Hunt character to mess around with. It's an extraordinarily unique kit for the path, and perhaps worth checking out even if she's not your usual cup of tea.

If you're eager to build March 7th in Honkai's 2.4 update, here's everything you need to know to put together the best build for March 7th's Hunt path.

Strongest March 7th Hunt Build in Honkai: Star Rail

March 7th's Hunt path has many typical characteristics of your typical Hunt character, but, thanks to her kit, she can also play similarly to a Harmony character, though admittedly not quite as strong. The strange mesh lands her squarely in the Main DPS Support role, thanks to how her Basic Attack, Skill, Talent, and Ultimate function. Compared to five-star limited characters, March 7th is a little complex, so I need to talk more about her kit in detail for clarity.

The core of March 7th's Hunt gameplay revolves around using her skill, Master, It's Tea Time! This turns one of the members of her team into her 'Shifu' and rewards them with a decent speed buff. More importantly, depending on the typing of the character March makes her Shifu, she gains one of two potential extra effects:

  • If Shifu is Erudition, Destruction, or The Hunt - March deals additional damage that matches the character's element.
  • If Shifu is Harmony, Nihility, Preservation, or Abundance - March deals 100% more Toughness Reduction.

On top of these effects, when March 7th makes a target her Shifu, she gains their Element on top of her own, making March 7th a universal unit. If the Shifu is Topaz, March 7th becomes Imaginary and Fire simultaneously.

Screenshot by Destructoid

When her Shifu launches an attack, March gains one charge out of seven. At seven charges (her Talent), she immediately takes action regardless of turn order and can launch an Enhanced Basic Attack. March 7th damage budget is entirely in this Enhanced Basic Attack, and it also rewards her Shifu with 60% CRIT DMG, after it is activated.

March 7th Hunt gains all of her Eidolons for free just by playing her event. Her second Eidolon has a considerable effect on her gameplay, allowing her to launch a Follow-up attack after her Shifu launches an attack. This Follow-up does not deal much damage, but it does provide her with an additional charge for her talent. This is extremely important to be aware of when talking about team composition with March 7th. More on that later.

Finally, March 7th's Ultimate deals moderate damage to one target, but greatly improves the effectiveness of her next Enhanced Basic Attack. Generally, you want to ensure she uses her Ultimate before every Enhanced Basic Attack.

Best Relics for March 7th Hunt

March 7th focuses on Basic Attacks for damage, so she only has a few select options in terms of Relics. Her best-in-slot (BiS) is an old favorite, the Musketeer of Wild Wheat set. This set provides additional ATK%, SPD, and, most importantly, Basic ATK damage — the best stats for March 7th in all situations.

Best Relics for March 7th Hunt in Honkai: Star Rail
Screenshot by Destructoid

If you don't have that set ready to go, March 7th cares a lot about ATK% in general due to the nature of her kit, so any two sets that provide ATK% for their two-piece bonus are worth considering. You can also use two-piece Wasterlander of Banditry Desert for the additional Imaginary damage bonus.

For her Sphere and Rope set, I highly recommend you run with Rutilant Arena, as it provides March with additional CRIT RATE and a large 20% damage boost to her Basic Attacks as long as she is above 70% CRIT RATE. If you can't get a 70% CRIT RATE, then the universal Inert Salsotto set is always a competitive choice.

Best Team Comp March 7th Hunt

March 7th's Hunt kit is extremely versatile, and it allows her to be run with practically any team comp and be somewhat successful. However, thanks to her second Eidolon, March 7th gets a considerable amount of leverage out of supporting a DPS that can attack very often. With that in mind, the best targets for her Shifu are Topaz, Clara, Yunli, Robin, and Aventurine, all thanks to the frequency of their attacks. Any combination of these characters will make up the Follow-up team comp, her best team.

Best Team Comp for March 7th Hunt in Honkai: Star Rail
Screenshot by Destructoid

Topaz is likely March 7th's best teammate because of how her Follow-up attack interacts with Numby. Every time Topaz OR Numby attacks, March 7th gains a Talent charge. March also gains a charge every time she launches a Follow-up attack following Topaz's attack. All of this results in many Enhanced Basic Attacks for March, and a massive 60% CRIT DMG buff for Topaz and Numby.

Clara is also an extremely potent teammate for March thanks to the infinite number of attacks Clara can make, limited only by the number of attacks the enemy can land on her. Every single time Clara uses her Follow-up, March gains a charge.

Yunli is in the same boat as Clara for March, providing the same rewards and limitations on attacks.

Robin is a universal support, but buffs Follow-up attack comps more than others thanks to their attack frequencies. With Robin's Ultimate active, all of March 7th's attacks become threatening to the enemy, allowing her (and everyone else on her team) to dish out considerably more damage than normal. Also, 100% Advance Forward is a godsent for March.

Aventurine is highly versatile and can be included in any team composition, thanks to his powerful shielding, which significantly benefits March 7th. In teams that don't focus on Follow-up attacks, Aventurine becomes the optimal target for March's Shifu. Since Aventurine frequently uses Basic and Follow-up attacks, March continues to benefit from her Talent's Follow-up effect, while Aventurine gains a charge from her Follow-up attack. This synergy pairs March and Aventurine in virtually any team without sacrificing their effectiveness

Best Lightcone for March 7th Hunt in Honkai: Star Rail

March 7th has a few strong options in terms of Lightcone choice. Her best Lightcone is In the Night, which is Seele's signature. It provides her with a massive boost to CRIT Rate, and further provides DMG scaling for her Basic Attacks via SPD (Speed).

Best Lightcone for March 7th Hunt in Honkai: Star Rail
Screenshot by Destructoid

Another solid option for March 7th is Worrisome, Blissful, which is Topaz's signature cone. It provides March with an equally large boost to CRIT Rate, while also considerably boosting the DMG of her Follow-up attack. Most importantly, when March uses her Follow-up with this Lightcone equip, she will apply the Tame debuff on targets hit, allowing her allies to deal more CRIT DMG to targets afflicted.

There was a large time when the option for mobile sports games would be pretty generic and largely limited in scope. Times and technologies have changed, and many developers have either created a mobile port for their console games or made a separate version. Few titles are also exclusive to mobile devices, providing ample choices for gamers.

10 best mobile sports games on iOS and Android

While the list is not ranked in a certain way, it tries to meet the different expectations and tastes of gamers. All the names on this list of best mobile sports games are pretty popular among both iOS and Android users, and have millions of players worldwide.

FC Mobile

An image of FC Mobile
Image via EA Sports

EA Sports rebranded its FIFA Mobile to FC Mobile earlier in 2023, and the game has managed to grow steadily. According to EA Sports, the mobile version has been performing very well financially, which isn't a surprise. FC Mobile is a portable version of the mainstream Ultimate Team mode, which is available on PC and consoles. The main objective is to make the best squad possible from special cards, and there are plenty of ways to earn them. From daily activities to fully licensed Euro tournament, you'll always have a supply of content, but do note that reaching the very top can require involving yourself in microtransactions.

MLB 9 Innings 2024

An image of MLB 9 Innings 2024
Image via Com2us

MLB 9 Innings 2024 is the best option for Android and iOS users to enjoy authentic baseball action on their hands. You can enjoy cards based on real-life professionals from the MLB, along with the chance to enjoy Hall of Famers. There are plenty of different game modes, allowing you to enjoy single and multiplayer experiences. MLB Perfect Innings 2024 is also another great option, but its hardware requirements are slightly higher.

NBA 2K Mobile

An image of NBA 2K Mobile
Image via 2K

2K might have developed a mobile port for NBA 2K MyTeam, but NBA 2K Mobile is certainly the better choice for iOS and Android users. Unlike 2K MyTeam's mobile port, 2K Mobile is a game developed purely for handheld users. It has many similarities with WWE Supercard, but gameplay is more focused on simulation. Plenty of special cards and items are released throughout the year, and the objective is to build the best team possible.

eFootball 2024 Mobile

An image of eFootball 2024 Mobile
Image via Konami

FC Mobile might have better promos and cards, but eFootball's simulation experience on iOS and Android devices is top-notch. In fact, this is the closest you could get to a console experience on your phone as far as gameplay and graphics are concerned. The only negative is the sole focus on the multiplayer experience, as eFootball 2024 is yet to get a Manager mode experience on both console and handheld. Additionally, Konami is a lot more generous when it comes to providing in-game resources to its player base.

Real Cricket 24

An image of Real Cricket 24
Image via Nautilus

Cricket might not be as global as a sport as football or basketball, but it has a large following, especially in South Asia. Real Cricket 24 is a decent cricket simulator, offering plenty of content for free. From national tournaments to franchise contests, players have a lot to choose from. While some of the modes require an additional purchase/subscription, Real Cricket 24 does offer a satisfactory experience compared to its competitors on the market.

Madden NFL 2024 Mobile

An image of Madden Mobile
Image via EA Sports

Madden NFL 2024 Mobile is to the NFL what FC Mobile is to football. However, Madden Mobile is a better adaptation of the console version than FC Mobile (as of the time of this writing). The mobile version is mainly focused on the Madden Ultimate Team experience, where players have to build the best fantasy squad. Several promos are released every season, including unique cards of NFL pros and Hall of Fame legends. Additionally, a separate mode is available that lets you contest for the Lombardi Trophy.

NBA Live Mobile Basketball

An image of NBA Live
Image via EA Sports

While NBA 2K Mobile offers an amazing experience, it only runs on the higher-end Android devices (and on the more recent iOS-run models). EA Sports' NBA Live is a much more accessible experience in that regard if you're looking for a mobile sports game. The game modes are very similar to the ones found in FC Mobile and Madden Mobile. That said, the daily grind can feel repetitive at times, but you can build a brilliant lineup without getting involved with microtransactions.

Ultimate Clash Soccer

An image of Ultimate Clash Soccer
Image via First Touch Games

If you have played Dream League Soccer, chances are that you might have heard about Ultimate Clash Soccer. Being developed by the same studios, Ultimate Clash Soccer is a very different experience from other football games on the market. For starters, the entire gameplay is focused on PvP matchmaking, and matches take place as duels. The onus is to score two goals before your opponent does, and a win moves you up on the ladder board. Gameplay involves you in situations where you have to make judgments in real-time (in a matter of a few seconds, quite literally). Wins and losses often boil down to one crucial decision, and it can lead to some really intense moments. While there are no licensed football clubs and leagues, Ultimate Clash Soccer has authentic footballers, thanks to a FIFPro license.

NFL Rivals

An image of NFL Rivals
Image via Mythical Games

NFL Rivals might appear to be a more casual take on American football due to its cartoonish gameplay, but it's anything but that. The gameplay presentation not only feels fresh, but it simplifies a lot of controls (perfect as far as mobile devices are concerned). Like Madden Mobile, the objective is to build the best squad possible, and there are plenty of cards to acquire. NFL Rivals is fully licensed, which means that you'll get all the identifiable faces. There's one major complaint - finding cards above the Rare tier is really difficult if you're playing free-to-play.

NFL 2K Playmakers

An image of NFL 2K Playmakers
Image via 2K

2K Playmakers is the most recent entrant to this list of mobile sports games, released worldwide in April 2024. If you were upset by the closure of NBA Supercard, 2K Playmakers could be the perfect option to consider. However, it's more than CCG since there's a strong focus on strategy. While the game is a bit shallow in terms of current content, 2K has been steadily pushing new features and events. Now is perhaps the best time to join the bandwagon, right before NFL 2024 commences in August.

When you think of an anime free-to-play title with optional microtransactions to back up its massive world and enjoyable gameplay, games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail probably the first that come to mind. However, this genre has grown massively since it was initially popularized in the west by miHoYo, and now there are many games within it, such as Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium, for you to choose from.

While the Chinese version of the game is already available at the time of writing, the title hasn't made it to the West or any other languages. The best place to keep an eye out for updates on the release date is the official Girls' Frontline Twitter account. Any updates will be shared there first, especially when it comes to pre-registration and bonuses for early sign-ups.

Is Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium already out?

Technically, yes, Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium is already out, but only available in China. This version was released on December 21, 2023, and has proven to be pretty popular. However, this version of the game isn't available outside of China, so if you're hoping to play it in a language other than Chinese, you'll have to wait for the Global Version's release.

What platforms will Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium be available for?

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium will be available for iOS and Android devices, as well as PC via an online portal. This makes the game easily accessible no matter where you are and when you want to play it. However, we don't have any details regarding cross-progression at the time of writing.

Based on other similar games, I'd say that progress will be continuous across all platforms. This means your progress will be linked to an account rather than a specific platform. However, this also means your progress is locked to a single email address and login, so you should keep that safe if you want to protect your level and all the characters you've acquired.

Where to download Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium

The best place to download Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium when the Global Version has been released will be the game's official website. I've had a good look around there, and it's got a news article for every update the game gets. This is great because it shows the game is active, and the download links or pre-registration links will appear there first as soon as anything new for the Global Verison comes up.

Is Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium a gacha game?

Image via Ceia YouTube channel

Yes, Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium is a game with gacha mechanics. This means that while you'll get a set of characters early on and can even pull for new ones from banners at the start of the game without an additional cost, you'll have to pay for new characters eventually.

However, the gacha mechanic will be completely optional. You can engage with it if you want new characters and are willing to spend some money for a chance to get them, but it's not essential to the core gameplay or completing missions. But new characters can make harder challenges much easier when they drop to high levels.

The best Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium trailers

Below, I've listed the best trailers for Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium. A the time of writing, the game isn't available outside of China, but I'll update this section of the article as soon as any new trailers for the global version of the game are released.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-UTFaEZFq8

The Centaureissi Character Preview trailer gives a decent idea of the types of characters available in this game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxy1TWdwflg

The Stiens;Gate crossover trailer is a good one because it indicates that the game will receive more events like this in the future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5cfdoSABh0

The animated opening trailer for Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium shows what you can expect when you venture in. There's a lot to love about the world-building going on here, in addition to the hardcore strategy gameplay.

Io games are increasingly popular, to the point that you've probably heard of at least one, even if you didn't realize it. Beginning back in 2015, io games made a huge debut and were some of the most popular titles on the market all the way through 2018, with even PewDiePie once declaring an io game to be his "new favorite game." Now that’s some popularity.

Nowadays, there are still loads of active io games for players to enjoy or just try out. There are way too many to list, but there are a few that are worth checking out. Here are the eight best io games you can play right now.

8. Paper.io

Paper.io is an io game that heavily focuses on taking over territory by creating some form of a “paper empire.” While other players try to create large sheets of paper, you’re doing your best to make your paper sheet even larger. To make your sheet larger, you must create small boxes that return to your original sheet. If another player “cuts” your paper while you’re attempting to make your sheet larger, it’s game over.

First debuting in November 2016, Paper.io is under the category of a puzzle game. The producers of the game are Voodoo. They also published the game alongside producing it. This game is one of the more classic io entries, making it a pretty good choice for someone looking to try out these sorts of games.

7. Friday Night Funkin’

Yeah, it was pretty obvious that this one would get some confusion. At first glance, Friday Night Funkin’ does not seem to be part of the io game family. But, if you look at its URL when playing on a PC, the address ends in .io — technically making it an io game. Created in 2020, FNF is one of the more recent io games to hit screens. Developed by The Funkin’ Crew Inc., FNF has since gained massive popularity within the gaming community.

In comparison to all other io games, FNF is definitely the most unique. It does not follow the original play style of any of the other io entries to this day. Friday Night Funkin’ is a rhythm game focusing on our main character, Boyfriend. His goal is to beat a number of opponents in rhythmic battles to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The gameplay is engaging, fast-paced and filled with an insanely good soundtrack.

6. Agar.io

Agar.io was the first io game to take the internet by storm back in April 2015. Developer and publisher Valadares created a trend with Agar.io thanks to a simplistic but unforgettable gameplay style. In essence, it's a free-to-play twist on the classic fish-eating game Feeding Frenzy.

In Agar.io, you begin as a very small cell that absorbs other small cells surrounding it to grow larger as time progresses. Your main goal is to avoid cells much larger than you. If you get too close, you’ll be absorbed, and that’s game over. A tip to get big fast is to eat other players who are around your cell’s size but slightly smaller. Be careful, though; if you think you're bigger but are wrong, you'll just get absorbed immediately.

5. Stabfish.io

If you like Agar.io, Stabfish.io is essentially a cuter and yet somehow darker version of that. Created by developer DragonWhites in 2020, the game offers tons of customisation - from bodies to hats - for your Stabfish to earn, which makes it hugely popular to this day. There is also a multiplayer version, Stabfish2.io, which allows you to play with friends rather than just matched players.

Using your mouse to move around the screen, you begin your journey as a Narwhal, using your horn to skewer other players. The bodies of your victims remain displayed on your horn as you navigate the playing field, trying to gobble up pellets and food which increase your point score, all while avoiding becoming a decoration for another player.

4. Diep.io

Diep.io is an MMO-styled io game by Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares. This game first hit the browser in 2016 and has since gained a reputation for its out-of-the-ordinary gameplay compared to other io games. Currently, Google Play reports that the game has over 10 million mobile downloads as of 2023.

What makes Diep.io different is the fact that there’s more than just claiming territory. While playing, you’re actively gaining upgrades, shooting other tanks, and destroying shapes that may stand in your way. There’s also an experience point system where players can grind to get to higher skill levels. This upgrade system sets it apart from other io games, which focus mostly on the divide-and-conquer gameplay loop.

3. Brutal.io

Taking inspiration from games like Agar.io, Brutal.io sees you in control of a small car towing a big and very dangerous weapon: the flail. You drive around the field, gobbling up pellets in order to grow your flail, using it to take out other players. You can swing your car around to lash out at other players who get too close or fling it into the playing field in order to take out players from a distance.

Created by independent developer Andre Almeida in 2017, Brutal.io is a mainstay within the io sphere with its neon color palette and availablity of upgrades which can give you a leg up, boosting your ranking.

2. Hole.io

Hole.io, created by French studio Voodoo, sees you playing as, well, a hole. At first you're small and fast, but only able to gobble up small pieces of furniture and people, but you're soon given far too much power as you grow in size and are able to consume entire city blocks into the black hole that is your mouth.

First released back in 2018 on Android and iOS, at around the same time as a game called Donut County which shares the same type of mechanics, the game quickly gained popularity within the io games sphere and it's still available to play today. There are many different levels that keep the game feeling fresh every time and there's a certain amount of panic that occurs when a hole even a little bigger than you comes too close, mainly because they can eat you and earn all of your earned points.

1. Slither.io

Slither io, with a 10 player game and several color worms on screen
Image via Google Play

Slither.io first hit screens back in March 2016 and was an immediate success. Slither.io’s developer, Steve Howse, created the game after being inspired by Agar.io. Although the games are almost identical in gameplay, Slither.io combines Agar.io's gameplay loop with that of the classic game Snake.

In Slither.io, you’re a snake (surprising, right?) eating small pellets to grow in length and size. Your goal is to get as large as possible among about 50 other players within your server. Unlike Snake, you can crossover yourself without causing a game over. But, if another player crosses you, you’re done for— as your snake will turn into a large amount of pellets for that player to devour. A popular tactic players use within Slither.io is to surround a smaller snake and slowly “constrict” it until it accidentally allows you to crash into it. By combining two classics in one, Slither.io definitely deserves its first-place spot.
