The Galaxy S24 FE is Samsung's next Fan Edition smartphone. While Samsung missed launching the Galaxy S22 FE, it looks like Samsung will continue to launch FE series smartphones every year. The company doesn't usually launch all its smartphones in the USA, but it seems like the Galaxy S24 FE will definitely be launched in the country.

Galaxy S24 FE confirmed to launch in the USA

A new and unannounced Samsung smartphone with model number SM-S721U was spotted (via 91Mobiles) in the Bluetooth SIG database. Going by the model number, the phone is the upcoming Galaxy S24 FE's carrier-locked variant for the US market. For reference, the model number of the Galaxy S23 FE's US carrier-locked variant is SM-S711U.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE USA Bluetooth Certification

The Galaxy S24 FE's Bluetooth certification document doesn't reveal any details about its specifications. However, considering the phone will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the US, it will likely feature 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 (with LE Audio and LC3 codecs). The global version of the phone likely features the Exynos 2400 chip, which was also used in the global versions of the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+.

A few days ago, complete features and specifications of the Galaxy S24 FE were leaked, along with the phone's images and color options. According to that report, the phone features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, in-display fingerprint reader, and Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection. It uses the Exynos 2400 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chip, depending on the market.

You can watch the performance of the Exynos 2400 chip in our Galaxy S24 review in the video below.

It will reportedly have an aluminum frame, glass back, and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The phone will be available in five colors: blue, graphite, mint, silver, and yellow. The phone is said to feature a 50MP primary rear camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. On the front, it has a 10MP selfie camera. It can record 4K 60fps videos from the front and rear cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Colors

The report also claimed the Galaxy S24 FE has 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage. It will run Android 14-based One UI 6.1 out of the box and get at least four major Android OS updates and five years of security patches. It is powered by a 4,565mAh battery, capable of lasting up to 78 hours of audio streaming or 29 hours of video streaming on a single charge.

The Galaxy S24 FE has GPS, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It also has 25W fast wired charging, 15W wireless Qi charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra, which will likely launch in January 2025, reportedly has a new design language featuring more rounded corners and softer edges. It is also getting new software that will gel well with the new design. The new design also improves the Galaxy S25 Ultra's screen size and bezels.

Galaxy S25 Ultra to feature a 6.9-inch screen, thinner bezels

According to a claim from usually reliable tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), the Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a narrower body despite a bigger screen. It is said to have a 77.6mm wide body and a 6.86-inch screen. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 79mm wide body and a 6.79-inch screen. This means Samsung will offer a bigger screen with a narrower body, which is a win-win for consumers.

The bezels around the Galaxy S24 Ultra's 6.8-inch screen measure 3.35mm. The Galaxy S25 Ultra, which reportedly has a 6.9-inch screen, has 2.3mm bezels around the display. That means the upcoming phone has 31% thinner bezels. This will improve the phone's ergonomics, and people will feel more comfortable holding it for a long time.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is also said to feature more rounded corners, moving away from the sharp corners seen on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This should bring more consistency between the design of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Currently, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ have rounded corners, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra has sharper corners.

Watch our Galaxy S24 Ultra review in the video below.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is said to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip worldwide. It is an upcoming 3nm chip fabricated by TSMC and uses two high-performance CPU cores clocked at 4GHz and six power-efficient CPU cores clocked at 2.8GHz. It will reportedly use the new Adreno 8 series GPU with 40% faster performance.

Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone is said to feature a quad-camera setup on the rear. It reportedly uses a 200MP primary rear camera with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide camera, two 50MP telephoto cameras (3x and 5x optical zoom), and a 12MP selfie camera. It will continue to use a 5,000mAh battery and have 45W fast charging.

Last month, Xiaomi launched its first smartphone with a clamshell form factor and a foldable display, the Mix Flip, a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Flip 6. After debuting the phone in China, the company confirmed that it would launch the phone in Europe with a price tag between EUR 1,300 and EUR 1,400. However, there was no information about when it would launch the phone there and exactly how much it would cost in the region. Well, now we have some information on the matter that could be troubling for Samsung.

On X/Twitter, @Sudhanshu1414 claims that Mix Flip is already available to purchase in Europe from a few retailers and costs EUR 1,299 in the region for 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant, which is the only memory configuration the company is offering there.

The story continues after the video…

In comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 costs EUR 1,319 for the same memory configuration in Europe. So, the one from Xiaomi is undercutting the one from Samsung by EUR 20. Although that’s minimal, the Mix Flip is now technically more affordable than the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Will that hamper the sales of Samsung’s latest clamshell smartphone? Well, we don’t think so. That’s because of two reasons. First, while the Mix Flip has excellent specifications, it is still not as durable or polished as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Second, since it is the company’s first such device, people could avoid buying it in favor of the one from Samsung. That being said, Samsung could lose a few sales of its latest foldable clamshell phone in Europe due to the launch of the Mix Flip. It would be interesting to see which phone most people go with.

Qualcomm has launched a new chipset today, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. It comes as a successor to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and sits below the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3. Before we discuss what it offers, the company has interestingly revealed that Samsung is already developing a device with this SoC.

In the past, we have seen Samsung use Snapdragon 7 series chipsets in F and M series smartphones, such as the Galaxy F55. So, the company may offer it in the next phones in those lineups, which would be the Galaxy F56 and the Galaxy M56.

However, that’s just speculation. The brand could also offer it in an A-series device. That being said, the chances of that happening are quite low as we already have a rumor of Samsung powering the Galaxy A56 with its upcoming Exynos 1580 SoC.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 features

Coming to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, it is made on a 4nm fabrication process and features one Prime core clocked at up to 2.5GHz, three performance cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz, and four efficiency cores clocked at up to 1.8GHz.

Qualcomm hasn’t provided any details about the GPU. According to the company, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 offers 20% faster CPU performance, 40% faster GPU performance, 30% better AI performance, and 12% lower power consumption compared to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3

The new chipset can drive a display with FHD+ resolution at up to 144Hz. It supports up to 16GB RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The ISP can handle 200MP photos and 4K HDR videos. Connectivity options include 5G mmWave and Sub-6GHz, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Lossless Audio, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDoU, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC.

Samsung won't be the only brand using this SoC. Qualcomm says that Realme, Sharp, and Xiaomi will also launch devices with the new chipset.

Apple by mohl uspořádat svou akci 10. září, aby oznámil novou řadu iPhone 16 a nové Apple Watch Series 10.

Dejte nám vědět do komentářů.

Standardní modely iPhone 16 letos dostanou nový design s vertikálním uspořádáním fotoaparátu na zadní straně, což docela připomíná iPhone X, protože Apple běží do kruhů, aby představil nový design.

iPhone 16 Pro 2
Zdroj: Apple

In case you forgot, we're supposed to be going through a new AR and VR revolution, except we're not. The Vision Pro, Apple's first mixed reality (XR) headset, hasn't reshaped the market how many thought it would. And soon, it will be Samsung's turn to have another try at the virtual and augmented reality market. Will it succeed?

There's no way to tell how things will go for Samsung and its two major partners, Qualcomm and Google. It's hard to predict how the XR market will evolve or change and which manufacturer will finally manage to bring this technology truly into the mainstream.

Nevertheless, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google say they're working on the “next XR experience.” And according to tipster @UniverseIce, the tentatively named ‘Galaxy XR' has some things in common with the upcoming Galaxy S25 flagship phone.

Galaxy XR and Galaxy S25 have common DNA

According to the latest rumor, “some of the design and features of the Galaxy S25 take into account the Galaxy XR.” It's unclear what this means exactly, and it would be easy to assume that the source hints at a Gear VR kind of experience where the phone powers the headset.

However, every leak and rumor so far says otherwise. The Galaxy XR should be a stand-alone device with its own processing hardware and power source, as well as a 3500ppi OLEDoS screen developed by Samsung Display or at least a micro-OLED from Sony.

If we were to guess, it's more likely that the source says the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy XR may have overlapping design languages.

As an older rumor has it, the Galaxy S25 series could look more different than the S24 and S23 lineups, as Samsung might be ready to transition to a new design language. Of course, this makes it harder to predict what kind of design Samsung's XR headset might adopt.

Furthermore, these different devices — phone and XR headset — could share some clever features, like Samsung Continuity and Galaxy AI.

The story continues after the video

Galaxy AI could have a huge positive impact on the XR experience, as it might be the key to lifting some of the barriers that have so far held XR back, such as typing without a real keyboard or otherwise interacting seamlessly with the digital world around the user.

For now, it's just a guessing game. Samsung hasn't been confirmed these features so far. The company hasn't said anything that would link Galaxy AI and Galaxy XR, so time will tell how things develop.

Previous rumors suggest Samsung may release a developer version of Galaxy XR this year, followed by the consumer version in Q1 2025.

The newest LPDDR5X DRAM chip from Samsung is the world's thinnest 12nm-class chip. It is available in 12GB and 16GB capacities. This chip is made using four stacked layers, each containing two LPDDR DRAM chips. Due to its thin profile, it offers more space in mobile devices, allowing for a better thermal design. According to Samsung, its new memory chip improves heat resistance by up to 21.2% compared to the previous-generation LPDDR5X chip.

Samsung optimized the printed circuit board (PCB), epoxy molding compound (EMC), and the back-lapping process to minimize the chip's height. The company plans to start supplying its new chip to smartphone manufacturers soon. It also announced that it will soon start making 24GB (6-layer) and 32GB (8-layer) LPDDR DRAM chips for future mobile devices.

YongCheol Bae, the Executive VP of Samsung's Memory Product Planning team, said, “Samsung’s LPDDR5X DRAM sets a new standard for high-performance on-device AI solutions, offering not only superior LPDDR performance but also advanced thermal management in an ultra-compact package. • As long as the selected web element is static, it’ll remain hidden indefinitely.
  • Due to ads’ dynamic nature, they’ll automatically reappear whenever the web page reloads.

iOS 18 beta 5 is now available to enrolled developers, featuring a new Distraction Control option in Safari. Through this fresh addition, users can hide static web elements, such as cookie popups, newsletter banners, and more. While you can technically use Distraction Control on iOS to block web ads, there’s a major limitation barring it from becoming a practical solution.

When hitting the new Hide Distracting Items button in Safari, an alert reads: “Hiding distracting items will not permanently remove ads and other content that update frequently.” This highlights that the feature isn’t designed to block ads on websites. Instead, it’s meant for static banners that don’t continuously refresh.

Google's upcoming Pixel 9 series is set to come equipped with a significant upgrade in the form of an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, as reported by Android Authority. The new devices will feature Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 sensor, similar to the one found in Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, replacing the optical sensor used in the previous Pixel 6 series.

The shift to an ultrasonic sensor is expected to enhance the unlock experience on the Pixel 9 series, offering faster and more accurate results compared to optical sensors. Unlike optical sensors, ultrasonic sensors are less affected by dirt or moisture and do not require adequate lighting to function properly. This means users will no longer have to deal with the bright light emitted by the optical sensor when trying to unlock their phones in the dark.

The improved ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is likely to make unlocking the Pixel 9 series much easier and more convenient. It's important to note that the upcoming Pixel Fold will not feature an ultrasonic sensor, as its fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button instead of being placed under the display like other smartphones.

Overall, the adoption of an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the Pixel 9 series is a positive step towards enhancing the user experience and making the devices more user-friendly and efficient.

  • The AI-powered filter seemingly disregards the sender’s address and only determines an email’s importance by scanning its text.
  • Apple must address this severe flaw before iOS 18.1’s public release, as it could make average users fall for more scams.

Apple Intelligence is arguably iOS 18’s most significant highlight, baking native AI features into the OS. While the technology likely won’t debut publicly until October, the company has already given iOS 18.1 beta testers an early look. One of its perks is AI summaries in the Mail app. Through this handy Apple Intelligence feature, users can save time, determine emails’ importance at a glance, get locked out of their accounts, and possibly lose considerable sums of money.

Yes, you’ve read that right. Apple Intelligence, indeed, can’t differentiate between phishing and legitimate emails. According to multiple Reddit users, the AI-powered filter in the Mail app is marking scam emails as a priority. This suggests that the technology categorizes emails based only on their texts, disregarding the senders’ addresses and other relevant signals.

  • If Apple follows its usual schedule, it could launch the iPhone 16 series on September 10, then roll out the AI features in October.

In recent years, smartphone hardware upgrades have been incremental — for the most part, at least. This has pushed some manufacturers to develop exclusive software features for their latest products, enticing customers to upgrade more frequently. The iPhone’s case is no different. Apple Intelligence is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, which will likely make it an iPhone 16 key selling point. Though, given that the highly anticipated AI features have been delayed till October, will Apple still launch the iPhone 16 in September? Here’s what the rumors indicate.

According to Bloomberg, Apple will stick to its tradition and launch the iPhone 16 in September. Since the company typically introduces its flagship smartphones on a Tuesday towards the middle of the month, the publication suggests that the announcement could take place on September 10. At Android Authority, we are huge fans of Android phones. However, since we cover the entire mobile landscape, you might be surprised to learn that some of the people who work here don’t use Android phones as their daily drivers. Yes, we have a few traitors iPhone users in our midst, and they help us get a broader look at the Android versus iOS competition.

You might be surprised, though, to learn that many of our readers also use iPhones. In fact, after Android, iOS is the operating system most used to visit our site, even more so than Windows! Don’t believe me? Check out the chart below, which represents a typical month of Android Authority visits:

Android Authority Users by Operating System

With all this in mind, it would make sense that some of our iOS-based readers used to be Android fans but have since made the switch to the iPhone but are still keeping an eye on Google’s mobile adventures. That got us curious, and in an effort to dig deeper, we ran a poll asking if people had jumped ship from Android to iOS and why.

We ran this poll here at Android Authority but also on our X and YouTube profiles. Below, we’ve compiled some of the most interesting answers. We think this is a really cool and interesting look into what might need some work within Android. After all, if Google and/or Android OEMs addressed some of these complaints, maybe these people would still be Android users.

Let’s dive in!

Why our readers made the switch to the iPhone

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 backs

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Overall, there were a few recurring themes for the answers we saw. We’re going to organize the comments by those themes and give you some examples. Let’s start with one of the most significant differentiators between Android and iOS: privacy.

Privacy

On X, user Shafty023 summarized their reason for switching very succinctly:

Privacy is a huge one. Done with having Google see and know everything about me via my phone.

It is true that iPhones approach data privacy a bit differently than Android phones. The main difference is money: Although both companies are collecting user data, Apple’s revenue doesn’t rely on that data, while Google’s primary source of income is selling that data. That being said, Android phones have come a long way for privacy, and there are ways to “de-Google” an Android phone, such as by flashing Graphene OS. But it’s still true that if privacy is your main area of concern, you’re probably going to be happier on an iPhone.

Another X user, DarkLordWaffles, agrees:

Google is primarily an ad agency. They approach all business decisions from that perspective. Apple primarily a hardware company. Different design philosophies

And BaritoneGuy even claims to have read the fine print:

Privacy. Plain and simple. I actually spent the time to read all the squinty print before I switched. I went from Blackberry to Windows phone to Samsung and then Apple. If I could get an Android phone without the Google stuff I would like that, but if you want the phone to be functional then that is not possible.

iMessage and apps in general

RCS on iMessage top of chat

Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority

In the United States, one of the most significant aspects of the iPhone keeping users from switching is iMessage. For reasons I won’t get into here, people in the US have not adopted platform-agnostic chat apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.) nearly as much as the rest of the world has. This leaves iPhone users dependent on iMessage. It’s only logical that this allure would tempt Android users to make the switch to an iPhone.

On YouTube, here’s what Nathan1Sixteen had to say on that:

Because I got tired of my friends complaining about my text message bubble color

This references so-called “green bubble hate,” a US phenomenon in which people get angry at Android users for “ruining” group chats within iMessage. Considering we primarily use our phones as communication machines, can you really blame someone for using the operating system that is best for communicating with friends and family?

X user ERosener had similar sentiments:

I love android. But until RCS is widely available on iOS I have had to move back to my iPhone to be more compatible with family and friends. Pathetic, I know. 😞

This user is referencing Rich Communications Services (RCS), which is how many US-based Android users communicate with one another. It’s essentially iMessage, but for Android. Thankfully, Apple is going to incorporate RCS into iOS 18 this year, which will allow iPhone users to better communicate with Android users. However, those green bubbles aren’t going anywhere, and iPhone-to-iPhone communication will still be superior to iPhone-to-Android communication.

On a related note, another X user, ArtoriasAkai, doesn’t mention iMessage but does talk about how apps on iOS tend to be better and more polished:

I switched because of the apps. Standard and downloaded apps are just better on iOS. Both in polish and function. I got tired of hunting for the good apps on Android. Often the better/best apps cost money on Android.

This is because app development for iOS is more streamlined than for Android. For example, developers only need to worry about one hardware company instead of dozens and also only need to work with a fairly limited set of screen sizes and hardware specs, at least when compared to the thousands of Android phones out there.

Broader ecosystem

apple iphone 15 with macbook air

Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority

Since Apple tightly controls its hardware, it shouldn’t be surprising that its broader ecosystem consists of devices that all work very well with one another. While most of the integrations Apple offers can be replicated with Android phones, Windows laptops, Chromebooks, etc., Apple’s “it just works” ethos is undeniably alluring.

X user DigiDynamo000 elaborates on this:

The reason was more towards the ecosystem itself and how it worked well with my workflow. Though I recognize that on a 1:1 comparison, Android is the superior of the platforms.

Apple also dominates certain categories, such as tablets and smartwatches. Simply put, the Android tablet industry is dwarfed by the iPad and very few Android-compatible smartwatches can truly meet the level of the Apple Watch. X user ThatTim5 is keenly aware of that last point:

The Apple Watch. All the other smartwatches wasn’t [sic] that good.

While Google’s Wear OS (which is based on Android) has made big strides in the past few years, the company wasted too much time before taking smartwatches seriously. Because of this, Google is the David in a traditional David vs Goliath story when it comes to the Apple Watch — and if you want an Apple Watch, you must own an iPhone.

Hardware

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Action Button

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

The aesthetic appeal of a smartphone is subjective, for sure, but some differences are objectively more useful. One example is ease of use: a phone that is really big is going to be difficult for a person with smaller hands to use. This has been a significant problem in the Android world because buying a compact Android phone has generally forced you to make significant compromises on performance and features. Meanwhile, the sizing of iPhones allows you to get big and small phones without losing out on many features.

Android Authority reader Phil Scadden sums it up like this:

It is possible to buy a quality phone that still fits in your pocket with iOS. Hard to buy an android less than 6.4 inches

Obviously, there are plenty of Android phones out there with sub-6.4-inch displays. But how many of them are just as good as their 6.8-inch counterparts? Not many. Hopefully, the Pixel 9 series will help fix this problem in the Android world since the Pixel 9 Pro is poised to be smaller but still offer all the same features as the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Outside of sizing, the physical features of a phone can also come into play. Android Authority reader Warden mentioned the Action Button on iPhones, a feature that doesn’t have much representation in the Android world:

Action button has been very convenient.

Granted, there are phones out there with buttons similar to the Action Button, but they are not as widespread, nor are they as easily customizable.

Convenience

Pixel 8 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro camera shootout

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Speaking of the convenience of the Action Button, it turns out that that word — convenience — came up quite a bit in some of these comments. For some people, it wasn’t a question of wanting to leave Android as much as a need to do so.

X user Kozjegyzo is a good example of this:

Because everything is Apple first with our company. Both hardware and software. So I had to. It’s not as bad as I thought but I kinda wanna go back to Android as a daily driver…

X user Danield011 has similar sentiments:

Just conveniences as all my family has iPhones

Finally, on YouTube, TechnoLawyer is in the same boat:

Because of my kids having iPhones. So mainly for iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Cash, and my oldest daughter’s use of Apple Notes to make lists and the sharing of said notes. If it weren’t for my kids, I think I’d have a Nothing Phone.

Keep this all in mind next time you wonder why someone would ever use an iPhone over Android. It might be that they simply have no choice.

Those are a lot of the reasons why some Android Authority fans have jumped ship to the iPhone. What do you think? What should Android do to address some of these concerns? Let us know in the comments below!

Samsung has revealed all the details about its new security update. The company will soon release the August 2024 security patch to its eligible smartphones and tablets, and its high-end devices might get the new update first.

Samsung's August 2024 security patch fixes 50 security vulnerabilities

After Google detailed the August 2024 security patch for Android on Sunday, Samsung revealed information about its own August 2024 security patch. It fixes 50 security loopholes found in the previous software. 35 of those fixes have been provided by Google; one of them is marked as critical, while 34 are of moderate severity. One patch has also been provided by Samsung Semiconductor (Samsung's chip-making division).

Samsung has included 14 security fixes that apply only to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The South Korean firm has detailed 12 of those fixes on its security bulletin webpage. Most of them are related to improper access control in several system services. Improper access control was also found in ExtControlDeviceService, Galaxy Watch, Knox, and system property.

Out-of-bound issues in the code were also found in several functions, including libcodec2secmp4vdec.so and libsmat.so. In case of insufficient permission, handling was not done properly in KnoxDualDARPolicy, SumeNNService, and Telephony. Improper input validation was found in the librtp.so function.

These improper access control, out-of-bound, and improper input validation issues allow attackers to gain access to the information in your device without permission or cause the device to crash. The company might start rolling out the August 2024 security patch to Galaxy smartphones and tablets this week.

With its next update, Samsung might start rolling out the One UI 6.1.1-based software update to its high-end devices. It could bring several new features and some Galaxy AI features that debuted with the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 last month to older devices.

Samsung's entry-level range is pretty solid and sells a significant number of units in markets across the globe every year. The company refreshes these models frequently so that customers get good bang for their buck.

It's been known for a while now that Samsung has been working on a new entry-level device, dubbed the Galaxy A06. New renders of the device have leaked online, giving us a good look at it.

New Galaxy A06 press renders have emerged

Earlier reports have suggested that the Galaxy A06 will be powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset with Android 14 onboard alongside One UI 6.1. There's going to be 4GB of RAM in one of the variants as well, while 6GB will be standard in most markets. This will be a dual-SIM smartphone with 4G LTE support. Don't count on 5G support, though.

Its design was seen in an earlier leak as well, which revealed that the Key Island design element that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55 series is now trickling lower down the order. The leak further suggested that the Galaxy A06 will come with an LCD 6.7-inch display with HD+ resolution and a U-shaped notch on the front for the selfie camera.

This will be one of the few Samsung phones with a 3.5mm headphone jack as you don't find that in most mid-range and premium devices these days. The Galaxy A06 is also said to come with a dual-camera setup that has an LED flash. A 5,000mAh battery will keep the lights on with support for 15W fast charging.

These new renders reiterate what we already know about the device, and they're also a hint of the impending launch, which could happen over the next few weeks.

It is an open secret that Samsung is developing the Galaxy S24 FE, thanks to all the leaks we have had about it. However, none of those leaks came directly from the company, which means that we didn’t have a confirmation directly from the brand that the phone exists. Well, that’s changing today, as Samsung has listed the Galaxy S24 FE on its official website.

We have spotted a support page for SM-S721B, which is the international variant of the Galaxy S24 FE, on Samsung’s official website for France, as you can see in the screenshot below.

So, the South Korean tech giant has now given us a confirmation that the Galaxy S24 FE exists. Considering that the company has made the support page of the phone live, it looks like the launch of the phone is imminent. Unfortunately, the support page doesn’t reveal anything else. That being said, previous leaks have given us a pretty good idea about the device.

Galaxy S24 FE leaked specifications

According to previous leaks, the Galaxy S24 FE will have the Exynos 2400 SoC, the same chipset that’s in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. Samsung will ship the phone with Android 14 (most likely with One UI 6.1.1). One of the memory configurations on offer will have 8GB RAM. On the imaging front, the device’s primary rear camera will feature the ISOCELL HP3 50MP sensor.

The story continues after the video…

Compared to the Galaxy S23 FE from last year, the upcoming Fan Edition phone will have thinner bezels, a larger screen, and a slimmer waistline. The company will launch the phone in four colors: Gray, Light Blue, Light Green, and Yellow. Hopefully, we will get to know more about the phone as its launch nears. We have some exciting information to share, especially for Galaxy A phone users hoping to get their hands on some Galaxy AI action. SamMobile learned from sources that Galaxy AI will eventually expand beyond the high-end segment and reach mid-range Galaxy A phones, starting with a couple of 2024 models.

Our sources tell us that Samsung's latest innovation, Galaxy AI, will land on Galaxy A devices for the first time on a couple of models already released in 2024, namely the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55. However, there are a few caveats.

Not the complete Galaxy AI experience

Firstly, we don't have an exact date when Galaxy AI will reach the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. However, our sources tell us it will happen through the One UI 6.1.1 update, which could land on these mid-range phones this month or the next.

Secondly, not every Galaxy AI feature will be released for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55. There's no information regarding which AI tools will make the cut and which ones will be missing, but we're guessing Samsung will leave out the ones that require vast amounts of on-device processing power.

At the time of writing, the most affordable Galaxy AI-enabled phone you can buy is the Galaxy S23 FE. Even the Fan Edition phone is missing Instant Slow-Mo, which was one of the AI features Samsung included in the original Galaxy AI suite for the Galaxy S24 series.

More details after the video

Thirdly, we can only confirm Galaxy AI will go live for the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, but not for older Galaxy A devices, even if there are hardware similarities.

For example, the Galaxy A35 uses the same chip as the Galaxy A54, i.e., the Exynos 1380 SoC, but even so, we can't confirm that Galaxy AI will be released for the Galaxy A54. Samsung may limit its efforts to Galaxy A models released in 2024 and later.

Samsung is betting big on Galaxy AI, and at Unpacked 2024, the company confirmed that it wants to bring these innovative AI tools to more than 200 million Galaxy devices, including phones, tablets, and wearables.

I’m not ready to give up my Galaxy S24+ for a flip phone

2. Srpen 2024 v 16:44

To use Samsung's language, I've been on the fence about the Galaxy Z Flip series for a few years now. I can almost relate to those On the Fence ads from Samsung, save for the fact that, instead of having a hard time choosing between an iPhone and a Galaxy Z Flip, I'm having difficulties leaving my Galaxy S flagship behind. And this year, so far, it hasn't been any different.

I started using the Galaxy S24+ roughly six months ago, and so far, I have no complaints. In my eyes, the S24+ is just as perfect as the Galaxy S22+ was two years ago. Maybe even better, given the super bright 2,600 nits display, which I'm a big fan of, especially now during the bright summer days.

But I'm also a fan of flip phones. I've always liked them, even before they were smart. For the past few years, I kept thinking about switching to the flip side. I haven't done so yet, and that's just a testament to how good the Galaxy S Plus phones have been to me. And I'm starting to wonder if I ever will.

It's hard for a Plus user to get on board with the Flip

If I were in a position where I'd now choose my first-ever Galaxy phone, I'd probably pick the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It's gorgeous, and Samsung's foldable display technology never ceases to impress me.

However, as an existing Galaxy S24+ owner, I find it too hard to hop over the fence and jump into the flip side of Samsung's garden, so to speak.

The story continues after our Galaxy Z Flip 6 review video

You see, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a beautiful foldable phone, and in my book, it is the best of its kind in 2024, hands down! However, compared to the Galaxy S24+, which I think is the closest slab-type phone alternative to the Flip 6, it compromises too much in favor of its dual-screen hinged design.

The Galaxy S24+ has a higher-resolution display, better (and more) cameras, the same chip and memory configuration (except it runs on Exynos 2400 in most regions), a bigger battery with faster charging, support for Samsung DeX support and Ultra Wideband, and a more resilient build with a higher IP68 rating.

My only reasonable choice might be Samsung's other foldable

I'm slowly reaching the conclusion that, as an existing Galaxy S24+ owner, I'd have to really want the Flip and minimalist cover screen experience in order to leave a near-perfect S24+ behind. And as much as I appreciate the Flip series, I just don't think I like it that much.

It might be a lot easier to buy the Flip 6 if you upgrade from an older or lower-end phone — or a different brand — but for me, to exchange the Galaxy S24+ for a Flip is asking a bit too much.

With that in mind, I find it very interesting that the more foldable phone generations get released and the more I sit on the proverbial fence, the more I wonder if the only reasonable foldable phone for me — an S Plus series fan — is a Fold rather than a Flip.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 does look very good to me. It looks better than all its predecessors. It's slick and powerful, and I love its sharp edges and corners. Besides, at least I can say that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 beats the Galaxy S24+ in more areas, has a larger foldable display, and doesn't compromise as much as the Flip 6 in favor of the hinged form factor.

All in all, after all these years of waiting for the perfect time to buy a Galaxy Z Flip, I'm beginning to think that maybe I never will, and I'll eventually end up on the Fold side. I haven't made up my mind yet, and I'll probably wait for the Galaxy S25+ to come out before I make my decision.

Now that Samsung has launched its flagship foldable phone for the year, there is only one brand yet to launch its flagship foldable, and that's Google. The company will announce the Pixel 9 Pro Fold on August 13. Chinese firms have already beaten the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in terms of thinness and hardware specs, and Google is about to do the same.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold is thinner, brighter, and better-specced than Galaxy Z Fold 6

The design and specifications of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold have leaked before its launch. Per the leaked information, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold appears thinner and better-specced than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The next-generation foldable Pixel is reportedly 10.5mm thin (dimensions: 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5mm) when closed. That is 1.6mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Camera Design

It is heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, though, at 257g. Samsung's new foldable weighs 239g, which is almost as light as the Galaxy S24 Ultra (232g).

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Screens

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold's inner screen reportedly measures 8 inches diagonally, making it slightly bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6's. Moreover, the screen is said to reach peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits, 100 nits brighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The Pixel's cover screen is reportedly 6.3 inches diagonally, but it is wider with an aspect ratio of 20:9 as opposed to the Galaxy Z Fold 6's 22:9 aspect ratio.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to have a 4,650mAh battery. That's 250mAh bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6's battery.

The story continues after the video.

According to another leak, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has the Tensor G4 processor and 16GB RAM. The Pixel has more RAM than Samsung's foldable.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Internal Screen Selfie Camera

It has a 48MP primary camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide camera, a 10.8MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, and two 10MP selfie cameras (one on the cover screen and another on the inner screen). The telephoto camera has a higher zoom than the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

Despite being thinner, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to be better equipped than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Of course, it has the advantage of having a bigger screen, which means Google has more width to fit a bigger battery and a bigger telephoto lens. However, it could have a weaker processor, as Tensor chips have been historically slower and less efficient than their Exynos and Snapdragon counterparts.

Hopefully, Samsung will bring a thinner and better-specced foldable phone with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim later this year.

Among all other foldable phones, Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 6 ranks highest in terms of camera performance, according to independent review website DxOMark. Interestingly, the Fold 6 even beats the Pixel Fold in the zoom department, even though Google's foldable phone technically has a superior telephoto camera.

By camera performance, DxOMark ranks the Galaxy Z Fold 6 1st among all other foldables and 45th in the global ranking. Its camera setup scores 133 points, which is the same as devices like the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, Pixel 7a, Galaxy S24 and S24+, and Galaxy S23 and S23+.

By sub-categories, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 scores 135 points in the zoom department, which is substantially higher than the 117 points achieved by the Google Pixel Fold.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom capabilities, whereas the Pixel Fold boasts a 10.8MP telephoto shooter with 5x optical zoom. The latter is superior on paper, but DxOMark suggests the Fold 6's telephoto camera wins over Google's despite the hardware differences.

What other things does the Z Fold 6 do well

Across other camera characteristics, the independent review website praised the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for its fairly wide dynamic range and good exposure, low noise in bright environments, good depth estimation in bokeh photos, effective video stabilization, good colors in video recordings, decent telephoto details in long-range shots, and good video detail in most conditions.

The story continues after the video

On the other hand, no camera is without fault, and DxOMark criticizes the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for things like autofocus errors in low light, some luminance and chroma noise in low light, occasional color rendering inaccuracies, luminance noise in ultra-wide shots, underexposed night shots when not using the flash, unstable autofocus and refocusing in video mode, and a few other issues.

There are many more camera-related details in DxOMark's test, so you should check it out if you want the full picture — no pun intended. And if you'd like to hear more about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 beyond camera performance, you can check out our full review, which covers everything about the phone, from displays and performance to design and software.

Update: As pointed out by our readers, Samsung offers a toggle for turning off the 2G network in some countries. You can check it out in the screenshot below. However, this feature isn't available in most regions.

Samsung Galaxy Phones And Tablets One UI 2G Toggle

The original story follows…

Google has just published an article on the Google Security Blog. It highlights the lack of a feature in Samsung’s smartphones and tablets that could expose people to privacy and security attacks leading them to fall for fraud and scams.

Criminals can use unsafe 2G network to attack Android devices

In the blog post, Google explains that fraudsters or scamsters can use cell-site simulators, also known as False Base Stations (FBS) or Stingrays, which are radio devices, to create their own 4G and 5G networks. They can then customize those to make them appear as networks provided by well-established carriers.

At this point, mobile phones nearby might start connecting to these fake networks as they might not be able to differentiate between a fake and a real one. Once that happens, criminals force these devices to connect to a 2G network created by them.

Now, the 2G network lacks many crucial security measures that 4G and 5G networks offer. Leveraging the lack of those security features, criminals can send an SMS containing spam to those devices, which could lead their owners to fall for frauds and scams, as well as surveil them and intercept their communications.

Google says turning off 2G network protects you from those attacks

To safeguard from these privacy and security attacks, Google asks people to turn off the 2G network on their Android devices. According to the company, Android has been offering people the option to turn off the 2G network since Android 12.

Unfortunately, Samsung’s phones and tablets don’t offer an option to turn off just 2G network and keep other networks (3G, 4G, and 5G) working, even though Android has been offering it for more than two years. Samsung's devices provide only the network modes that you see in the screenshot below.

Samsung Galaxy Smartphones And Tablets Network Modes

This exposes Galaxy phone and tablet owners to scams and fraud through the attacks mentioned above. We hope that Samsung is taking note of this and offers a software update to all Galaxy devices that adds the ability to turn off just the 2G network.

Samsung is one of the most important Olympic Partners. The company has put a lot of resources into the Paris 2024 Olympics, sponsoring many athletes and teams, creating a fourth medal out of recycled glass, and gifting every Olympian a brand-new special edition Galaxy Z Flip 6.

The company delivered roughly 17,000 Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition phones, and athletes have been using them to take selfies on the Olympic podium. That's a first in the history of the Olympic Games. Athletes have never before been allowed to carry phones to the podium.

Samsung gifted nearly $20 million worth of state-of-the-art limited-edition Flip 6 models to Olympians last month. However, judging by their actions, some athletes seem to care little about Samsung's sponsorship or the special edition Galaxy Z Flip 6. Not even as memorabilia, which is baffling.

A few of these rare Samsung phones are now up for sale on websites like eBay and Marktplaats. Samsung isn't the one selling them. Athletes are, and some say they're not doing it to make a profit.

Showing complete disregard for one of the Olympic's biggest sponsors

Technically, Olympians who have received Samsung's gift (all of them) are not prohibited from selling these rare phones. However, their actions show disregard to a major sponsor. The 2024 Olympic is ongoing, and these athletes lacked the courtesy to at least wait for the Olympics to end before trying to sell the phones they've received as gifts.

Although some Olympians can earn up to $768,000 for winning gold, winnings vary by country (via CNBC). Some olympians aren't paid very well. Despite that, they put in a lot of work to reach that high level of performance. But some never reach the podium, and others could use the $1,000 they could get from selling an Olympic Edition phone.

However, according to some athletes who are selling these rare Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition phones through online marketplaces, they're not doing it for profit but because they already have a phone (via AD). And, judging by their actions, they don't care about keeping the Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition as a piece of memorabilia, either.

Selling a gift never looks good. But selling a major sponsor's gift online while the Olympic Games are ongoing looks even worse. It comes off as ungrateful and shows complete disregard for the sponsor, which isn't very sportsmanlike.

One of the worst things that can happen to a foldable phone is to suffer from a foldable display failure. Although they get tougher every year, foldable panels remain more susceptible to breakdowns and damage than standard non-foldable displays. It is one of the reasons why many people remain reluctant toward foldable phones and haven't bought one yet. That and the high costs associated with replacing a state-of-the-art foldable display.

Nevertheless, Samsung stands by its foldable phones with something called ‘Galaxy Z Assurance,' not to be confused with Samsung Care+ insurance.

Galaxy Z Assurance is a sort of stamp of approval and comes with a one-time discounted foldable screen replacement. It appears to be specific to the US market, where the following Galaxy Z Assurance render is featured on the online store's landing pages for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung's stamp of approval claims that the latest phones are “Built to withstand” and are tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds or “10 years of approximate use.”

You'd have to fold the Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Z Fold 6 roughly 55 times a day to reach 200,000 folds in 10 years. Nevertheless, assuming you will need a foldable screen replacement, the Galaxy Z Assurance program could save you some money.

One-time $200 screen replacement for a limited time

Samsung's Galaxy Z Assurance policy states that you can get a cheap(er) one-time foldable screen replacement for your Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Galaxy Z Flip 6 should you need it. It will set you back only $200.

Without this policy, replacing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 inner screens would cost you $549 and $319, respectively. However, there is a caveat you'll need to keep in mind.

More details after our review video

What might disappoint you is that this Galaxy Z Assurance policy has an expiry date. So, if you planned on using your foldable phone for many years — maybe seven or so — and thought you could use this repair policy later, you won't be able to.

More specifically, Samsung states that the one-time discounted screen replacement must be claimed within two years of the date of purchasing the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Galaxy Z Flip 6.

After that, you'll have to pay the full price for a screen replacement, should you need one, regardless of whether or not you used your Galaxy Z Assurance ticket within the first two years.

Sometime this month or the next, Samsung will launch the One UI 7.0 Beta Program and invite Galaxy smartphone users in select countries to test the next version of One UI and Android 15.

Samsung will use feedback provided by beta testers to fix bugs and issues so it can get the final version of the Android 15 and One UI 7.0 update out as quickly as possible.

Not everyone will be able to test the new software, even if they own a device eligible for One UI 7 and Android 15. Only a limited number of Galaxy smartphones will be eligible for the beta program.

The latest flagships, like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, are sure to be on the list, but what about other devices?

Galaxy phones that could get One UI 7.0 (Android 15) beta

Samsung has not officially revealed details about the One UI 7.0 beta as of August 2, but we can make an educated guess based on Samsung's long history of One UI beta programs. The following are the devices that have a high likelihood of getting the One UI 7.0 beta.

Samsung may include more devices, particularly mid-range ones, in the beta program. However, Samsung doesn't follow a set pattern when it comes to bringing One UI beta updates to mid-range devices. We will have to wait and see what the company has in store this year.

For flagship phones launched in the last couple of years, One UI 7.0 will be preceeded by One UI 6.1.1. The time frame for the One UI 6.1.1 update's release is unknown as of August 2, but we expect it to go live sometime before September.

Be sure to bookmark this page so you can check back for any new information that becomes available in the coming days and weeks.

One UI 7.0 features: What to expect

One UI 7.0 will be among the biggest upgrades in years, especially as far as the user interface is concerned. Quite a few of the expected changes and new features have leaked online, and some of the major ones are listed below.

  • New system app icons
  • New background interface
  • A new control area at the bottom of the lock screen
  • Adjustment of shortcut icons (size?) in the left and right corners of the lock screen
  • Pull-down shortcut bar and notification can be independent/merged
  • The pill-shaped UI element in the upper left corner notification bar can display more apps
  • Added interruptible animation and optimized app opening and closing animation curve
  • New battery icon and charging animation bar
  • New camera user interface
  • Added support for 5G SMS messages
  • New notification pop-up animations and closing animations
  • Added unlock animation
  • New button touch and page return animation
  • Added many new desktop widgets of various sizes
  • Added more lock screen widgets
  • Added large folders

One UI 7.0 may not bring new Galaxy AI features. The new AI features from the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, which you can check out in the video below, will come to supported devices with the One UI 6.1.1 update.

Samsung was expected to release the One UI 7.0 update last week, but that didn't happen. We reported that the company delayed the release, and the One UI 7.0 beta update will likely be released later this month. Ahead of that release, a massive leak has revealed many One UI 7.0 features.

Several One UI 7.0 features have leaked weeks before the release

Reliable tipster Ice Universe has posted (via Android Authority) a list of some One UI 7.0 features on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo. According to the tipster, One UI 7.0 has new app icons, a new background (wallpaper?) interface, and a new control area at the bottom of the lock screen. The lock screen shortcuts now seem to have bigger icons.

He also claims that the notifications area and the quick settings panel can be merged if the user wants to. Those pages can also stay independent (similar to One UI 6). There is apparently a pill-shaped animation that can display ongoing activities from more apps (like the timer). One UI 7.0 reportedly introduces a new animation while unlocking a device's screen.

Samsung has reportedly added animations that can be interrupted by the user (like opening an app from the home screen but stopping it by clicking the home screen). Moreover, the South Korean firm is said to have improved app opening and closing animations. The tipster said One UI 7.0 brings a new battery icon and a bar-shaped charging animation.

The South Korean firm seems to have added several new widgets (of various sizes) for the home screen and the lock screen. The tipster also claimed that One UI 7.0 will bring support for large-sized app folders on the home screen.

Ice Universe also confirmed that One UI 7.0 includes a completely redesigned camera app. The new version of One UI reportedly also supports SMS sending and receiving using the 5G network. There also seem to be new animations for notification pop-ups and closing animations.

Leaked One UI 7.0 features list:

  • New system application icons

Watch the leaked icons for the stock Clock and Samsung Internet apps in our video below. Those icons will be available with the One UI 7.0 update.

Samsung will likely open the One UI 7.0 Beta Program for the Galaxy S24 series before the end of this month. The beta program could be available in China, Germany, India, South Korea, the UK, and the US. However, the company's plans can change, so nothing can be said for sure right now.

Apple Intelligence

Zpočátku budou funkce Apple Intelligence dostupné pouze v americké angličtině a postupně bude společnost seznam jazyků rozšiřovat.

GTA trilogy reaches 30m downloads on Netflix

17. Červen 2024 v 17:34

Recent data states Rockstar's GTA trilogy has hit a combined total of over 30m downloads on Netflix.

Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas made their way onto the service in December, following earlier reports that Netflix had been in talks with Rockstar to licence a GTA game as part of an attempt to introduce "higher-end" titles to its mobile-focused gaming catalogue.

In January, it was subsequently reported that the arrival of these three games had given a boost to Netflix's gaming endeavours, with monthly mobile game downloads nearly tripling to 28m in the December. 18m of these downloads were a combination of San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA 3.

Apple is holding back no punches with its AI partnerships for iOS 18

  • Apple is reportedly considering integrating more generative AI services, including Meta AI, Perplexity, and Anthropic, into iOS 18.
  • The company could also be looking into AI services permitted in China, as OpenAI’s ChatGPT is banned there.
  • Apple’s new AI features will roll out to compatible iPhones, iPads, and Macs this fall through the upcoming OS updates.

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple is integrating ChatGPT into its latest devices. While the company has developed its own Apple Intelligence features, users will get to rely on OpenAI’s smarts when the first-party ones are insufficient. However, Apple won’t stop there; it’s reportedly considering more AI partnerships with companies like Meta, Perplexity, and Anthropic.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has been discussing potential AI partnerships with Meta, Perplexity, and Anthropic. Additionally, the firm is trying to find an OpenAI alternative for its China-based users, as ChatGPT is banned there. If any of these potential partnerships materialize, iOS 18 users could have more AI provider options — beyond ChatGPT and Apple’s own model.

Surprise, surprise: Apple’s App Store changes continue to really bother the EU

24. Červen 2024 v 15:22

  • The EU Commission has notified Apple about its preliminary findings, which indicate it has breached the Digital Markets Act (DMA) with its anti-steering rules.
  • The EU Commission has also opened new investigations to determine whether Apple’s Core Technology Fee (CTF) complies with the DMA.
  • If the preliminary findings are confirmed, the EU could charge Apple up to 10% of its annual global revenue.

Earlier this year, Apple rolled out an iOS update with EU-exclusive features to comply with the DMA. These include support for third-party app stores and allowing developers to reference in-app digital services that users can buy from external websites. Now that the EU Commission has investigated some of Apple’s changes, its preliminary findings indicate that the iPhone maker has breached the DMA.

The EU Commission announced today that Apple’s new iPhone rules continue to prevent developers from steering users to external websites, which violates its DMA. For reference, Apple now allows app developers to link to digital purchases beyond its own IAP system. However, the company still restricts how developers implement the links in their apps, such as prohibiting them from listing their pricing.

iPhones and iPads will soon give you one less reason to use your Mac

  • The first betas of iOS and iPadOS 18 include a new option in the Files app that allows users to reformat external drives when erasing them.
  • Beta testers can currently pick between the APFS, ExFAT, and MS-DOS (FAT) formats, which serve different purposes.
  • Picking the APFS format allows users to encrypt the external drive using a password of their choice and opt for case sensitivity.

Apple has been gradually boosting its latest iPhones and iPads by introducing fresh power-user features with every annual OS update, and this year is no different. The first betas of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 pack a new functionality that allows testers to reformat external drives when erasing them.

The ability to erase connected external drives using the Files app on iPhones and iPads has existed for a while. As Kaleb Cadle discovered, though, iOS and iPadOS 18 upgrade this feature by allowing users to pick between three formats instead of being limited to a default one.

Here’s why the iPhone 15, 15 Plus won’t have new AI tricks (it’s not the chip)

  • Apple’s new AI features won’t come to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus as they lack enough RAM, according to a trusted journalist.
  • The iPhone maker purportedly decided that 8GB of RAM was the minimum needed for its Apple Intelligence features.
  • By contrast, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus only pack 6GB of RAM.

Apple announced a variety of new AI tricks for its iPhones earlier this month, dubbed Apple Intelligence. Unfortunately, most iPhone owners are left in the lurch as only the iPhone 15 Pro series will get these features.

ASUS ROG Phone 9 wishlist: All the features I want to see

21. Červen 2024 v 22:00

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 has only been around about five months, and even a bit less than that in the United States. So far, it’s gotten great reviews and is easily looking to be one of the best phones for gaming to date. Not only does it build on everything that comes before it, but it adds new features like dust resistance that help make it a bit more mainstream-friendly. Even if it’s one of the best Android phones around, no phone is perfect. There are certainly a few things that could be improved upon next year with a new model. With that in mind, here is my ROG Phone 9 wishlist.

Continue to blend mainstream with gaming

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

It’s no secret ASUS has struggled with its smartphone division recently, with many questioning even if we’d see the ASUS Zenfone 11. ASUS has since clarified it’s not done with phones yet, but it is pretty clear which of the two product lines has the most potential to bring in new customers if ASUS plays its cards right at least.

The ROG has always been the more exciting of the two, but this year the phone received a substantial design update that added water and dust resistance for the first time. The design also has a much more mainstream look than previous iterations. There’s still plenty of gaming flare, but it’s a much more reserved experience that reminds me of the now-defunct Razer Phone series.

I think ASUS should continue to lean on this. A quick look around Reddit and other communities makes it clear that a portion of older ROG Phone owners are quite disappointed by the change, but those who prefer more reserved designs have much more positive things to say. Even better, first-time buyers are finally sitting up and taking notice. Interestingly, it’s not all just from gamers either. After all, the ROG Phone 8 stands out for those looking for something powerful and different from the pack.

There's still plenty of gaming flare, but the new-look ROG Phone reminds me of the now-defunct Razer Phone series.

I’m not saying that the ROG Phone 9 could ever compete at the same level as other mainstream phones, the point is that balancing mainstream appeal with hardcore gaming appeal might provide ASUS with a larger target audience than they have now. A less flashy design could also appeal to gamer types (like myself, actually) who love powerful hardware but don’t want it to be overly flashy. For example, my ROG Phone Zephyrus G14 straddles the line between the gaming machine and productivity beast, and that’s what I love about it.

The ASUS ROG Phone 9 doesn’t need to shake up this new design much at all. Instead, it should work on diversifying its lineup to satisfy all budgets, from the most modest mobile gamer to the hardcore gamer who’ll use emulators, streaming services, and more. That leads to the next point.

A lower-tier option might appeal to more users than you’d think

The ASUS ROG Phone series finally has the chance to appeal to more than just hardcore mobile gamers. Yes, that might feel a bit ironic but the talk around the web makes it clear that this is a phone that is eye-catching and interesting enough to appeal to a slightly wider audience. Granted this pales massively in comparison to the audience for Apple, Samsung, or really even Google’s Pixel series. Still, it’s an opening ASUS could work with by introducing a more wallet-friendly base version of the ASUS ROG Phone 9 that’s more aimed at casual gamers.

Right now, the ROG Phone 8 family starts at $1,099 for a phone with 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. Imagine if there was a base model that had only 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, akin to devices like the base Galaxy S24. This change would allow the ROG Phone 8 to compete a little better for those who are just fans of the ROG laptop series (like myself) but aren’t necessarily looking for a mobile gaming powerhouse. It could also be great for those looking for more options in the US outside of the usual suspects.

Bigger battery

ASUS ROG Phone 8 LED back

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 dropped the battery down a bit with this generation, opting for a 5,500mAh battery instead. While the 500mAh drop sounds like a lot, the good news is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and other optimizations mean you’ll get roughly the same battery life as the older model. But, this is a gaming phone! More battery life is never a bad thing, as games can drain battery life pretty fast compared to other activities.

I’d like to see the ASUS ROG Phone 9 continue improving battery life through optimization while also returning to form with a 6,000mAh battery.

Continue to refine the camera

ASUS ROG Phone 8 camera close

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 is actually a pretty decent camera phone, especially compared to its predecessors. It has decent color saturation, white balance, and exposure. Of course, it also has some lens flare issues and a pretty inconsistent zoom experience.

It’s true that gamers don’t typically care about the camera as much but that’s slowly changing. Mobile gaming is improving on the whole, largely thanks to Apple and its push, and as these games improve they will no doubt attract new audiences that might not consider themselves your typical hardcore gamer. I believe ASUS may have a limited recipe for success if the ROG Phone 9 can balance these high-end gaming features with a camera that’s close to as good as Samsung, Google, and Apple.

Better update policy

This last point is extremely important. Two years of OS updates in 2024 is absolutely crazy. This is a high-end gaming machine that would absolutely benefit from having the latest and great improvements from Google.

ASUS might not want to commit to the same crazy seven-year promise that Samsung and Google are starting to offer, but I’d settle for any improvement. Heck, even a promise of just three to four OS upgrades and five years of security would really go a long way. This is especially true for those who have never bought an ASUS phone and are a bit nervous about its long-term life support.

Will there be a ROG Phone 9?

ASUS has had its share of struggles in the smartphone space and it’s clear that nothing about its future here is certain. There are still whispers that the Zenfone series might be heading toward the grave, and it’s equally possible the ROG series could also be in trouble. As it stands, I can’t say with 100% certainty there will be a ROG Phone 9. That said, I’d say it’s still very likely.

The ROG Phone 8 has been extremely well reviewed so far and has seen equally positive attention from the online community. All that bodes well for the future of the ROG Phone 9. If it does arrive, when might we see it? That’s a bit complicated as the phone doesn’t have the most consistent launch history, as you can see:

  • ROG Phone 8 — February 29, 2024
  • ROG Phone 7 — April 13, 2023
  • ROG Phone 6 — July 5, 2022

For now, all I can really say with any certainty is the ROG Phone 9 won’t surface until 2025 barring some major change in their strategy, which seems pretty unlikely.

Should you wait for the ROG Phone 9?

Absolutely not! Odds are the ROG Phone 9 will continue the legacy built by the ROG Phone 8’s major design change, just with further refinement. If you want a gaming phone now, we highly recommend the ASUS ROG Phone 8.

Just want a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone and don’t care if it’s gaming-centric? The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra ( ) would be a wonderful alternative and is one of the best Android phones on the market.

iOS 18 lets you tune your AirPods Pro 2’s noise cancellation even better

  • Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 will allow users to customize the Adaptive Audio mode on iOS 18 by choosing how much noise gets suppressed.
  • Those currently testing iOS 18 must update their AirPods Pro 2 to the respective beta firmware to try the new feature.
  • We advise you not to install beta firmware on your AirPods, as you won’t be able to roll back to the stable version if you find the experience unreliable.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 are arguably the best wireless earbuds for iPhone users, offering a seamless integration with iOS and many neat features. These include an Adaptive Audio option that blends the Transparency and Noise Cancellation modes. So, those using it can hear human voices but not unwanted, loud noises. With iOS 18, Apple is giving the Adaptive Audio mode a welcome upgrade, allowing users to control how much noise it cancels.

As highlighted by MacRumors, the AirPods Pro 2’s Adaptive Audio mode has become more customizable on iOS 18. Those running the latest beta firmware versions on their iPhones and AirPods will find a new option in the Settings app. Through a dedicated slider, users can allow more or less noise to pass through when using the Adaptive Audio mode.

While the upgraded Adaptive Audio mode is certainly handy, we advise you not to install the beta firmware on your AirPods Pro 2. After all, AirPods, unlike iPhones, can’t easily be downgraded to the stable version. So, if you encounter serious bugs or battery drain while running the beta, you may have to deal with it until the final release launches this fall.

It’s worth noting that the new Adaptive Audio mode is also supported on iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. So, if you’re using your AirPods Pro 2 with a different Apple device, you’ll still be able to customize the aforementioned feature.

This demo of Apple’s iPhone Mirroring feature shows it’s ahead of Android

  • A user has activated the unreleased iPhone Mirroring feature that is coming soon to macOS Sequoia.
  • Apple’s iPhone Mirroring execution in the screen recording appears to be much smoother than its Android-Windows counterpart.
  • There’s currently no easy way to enable Apple’s feature, but those running the iOS and macOS betas can expect an official debut in the near future.

Arguably, macOS Sequoia’s most significant feature is iPhone Mirroring. Through this upcoming Apple ecosystem integration, users will be able to control their iOS devices directly from their Macs. While macOS Sequoia beta 1 doesn’t officially offer this feature, a user has managed to enable it forcibly. Based on the brief screen recording they shared, Apple’s iPhone Mirroring appears to be much more polished than the Phone Link feature tying Android and Windows.

As shown in the video embedded above, Twitter user Xezrunner has managed to enable and use iPhone Mirroring on iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The mirroring in the demo seems to be instantaneous, with virtually no lag or glitches. The user swiftly launched, navigated through, and exited a mirrored iOS app — reflecting a natural, intuitive user experience.

User Albacore, who helped enable the feature, states that there’s currently no easy way to activate iPhone Mirroring on macOS Sequoia beta 1. Consequently, users may have to wait until Apple officially enables it in a future beta build. Nevertheless, the fact that an unreleased feature on a first developer beta seems to be working seamlessly only highlights how well-developed it is. The second OS betas, which could potentially enable this feature for all testers, are expected next week.

Google adding a slightly useful call lookup feature

13. Červen 2024 v 17:20

Google is adding the ability to look up phone numbers from your call log. Don’t get too excited, the lookup returns the same thing you’d get if you googled the phone number which means you’ll get the usual array of advertisements for a super lookup service and spam if the number was not found.

This has not rolled out to my phone yet, but it looks promising and would save me a step when figuring out if I actually receive any legitimate calls.

According to 9to5Google the update is server side, and is appearing on some Pixel phones now. It’s just a button that searches the number for you directly from the call log, so not groundbreaking tech and could easily come to every manufacturer out there.

Does not appear that you can look up the number while the phone is ringing, which is a letdown. A call indicator with name, number, and a quick google snapshot of what the search would look like if you clicked it would be immensely helpful and we’re way beyond the days when voice and data couldn’t happen at the same time on a cell phone.

Once again it’s a start toward something good.
